Abstract:Presence of microplastics (MPs) in wastewater has posed a huge ecosystem risk. Constructed wetlands (CWs) can effectively intercept MPs, while with MPs accumulation the response of CWs' performance is still unclear. In order to evaluate those effects, we conducted a 370-day experiment using CW microcosms fed with different levels (0, 10, 100, and 1000 μg/L) of polystyrene (PS) MPs (diameter: 50−100 μm). Results showed that nitrogen removal efficiency was increased (by 3.9%−24.7%) during the first 60 days and then decreased (by 7.1%−41.3%) with MPs accumulating, but no obvious change in COD and TP removal was observed. From further analysis, MPs accumulation changed the biofilm composition (TOC content increased from 41.4% to 52.7%), substrate porosity (electrical resistivity increased by 1.2–2.4 folds), and oxygen mass transfer (|KLa,O2| increased from 3.5% to 18.6%). Moreover, the microbial dynamics presented a higher abundance of nitrifiers (Nitrospira and Nitrosomonas) during the 60-day experiment and a lower abundance in the last days, while denitrifiers (Thauera, Thiobacillus, and Anaerolinea) had a high relative abundance throughout the experiment, being consistent with the variation of nitrification and denitrification rates. Finally, structural equation model analysis proved that due to the changes of substrate characteristics and microbial compositions and activities, the obvious decrease in nitrification efficiency was a direct reason for the decline of nitrogen removal during 370-day MPs accumulation. Overall, our study first prove that MPs accumulation can cause a series of changes in physicochemical and microbial characteristics of substrate, and ultimately affect the nitrogen-transforming process in CWs. Although our conclusions were based on the lab-scale CWs being different from the real wetlands, we hope that the conclusions can provide the effective regulatory strategies to guide the control of MPs in the actual wetlands.

Abstract:Wastewater and stormwater are both considered as critical pathways contributing microplastics (MPs) to the aquatic environment. However, there is little information in the literature about the potential influence of constructed wetlands (CWs), a commonly used wastewater and stormwater treatment system. This study was conducted to investigate the abundance and distribution of MPs in water and sediment at five CWs with different influent sources, namely stormwater and wastewater. The MP abundance in the water samples ranged between 0.4 ± 0.3 and 3.8 ± 2.3 MP/L at the inlet and from 0.1 ± 0.0 to 1.3 ± 1.0 MP/L at the outlet. In the sediment, abundance of MPs was generally higher at the inlet, ranging from 736 ± 335 to 3480 ± 4330 MP/kg dry sediment and decreased to between 19.0 ± 16.4 and 1060 ± 326 MP/kg dry sediment at the outlet. Although no significant differences were observed in sediment cores at different depth across the five CWs, more MPs were recorded in silt compared to sandy sediment which indicated sediment grain size could be an environmental factor contributing to the distribution of MPs. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) fibres were the dominant polymer type found in the water samples while polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) fragments were predominantly recorded in the sediment. While the size of MPs in water varied across the studied CWs, between 51% and 64% of MPs in the sediment were smaller than 300 μm, which raises concerns about the bioavailability of MPs to a wider range of wetland biota and their potential ecotoxicological effects. This study shows that CWs can not only retain MPs in the treated water, but also become sinks accumulating MPs over time.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) discharging into constructed wetlands pose risks to these ecosystems. Nevertheless, the perturbation of MPs to different types of macrophytes, which play important roles in purifying pollutants of wetlands, has not been fully elucidated. In this study, polystyrene MPs (PS-MPs) perturbation on nitrogen removal and sensory quality of surface flow constructed wetlands planted with emergent and submerged macrophytes were investigated. PS-MPs enhanced N removal efficiencies temporarily, whereas the N removal rate constants were declined as exposure time was prolonged. The NH4+-N removal rate constants declined by 25.78 % and 34.03 % in E and S groups respectively. The NO3--N removal rate constants declined by 22.13 % in the S groups. Denitrifiers including Thiobacillus, Rhodobacter, and Sulfuritalea were stressed. The sensory quality deteriorated after PS-MPs exposure, which was significantly related to changes in Chlorophyll a, particle size distribution, and colored dissolved organic matter. Turbidity in E groups and chroma in S groups were greatly affected by PS-MPs. Overall, under MPs exposure, macrophytes in E groups were more suitable for nitrogen removal, and macrophytes in S groups better purified the turbidity. The study could provide the basis for better allocation of macrophytes in CWs to reduce the purifying risk by PS-MPs disturbance.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are now prevalent in aquatic ecosystems, prompting the use of constructed wetlands (CWs) for remediation. However, the interaction between MPs and CWs, including removal efficiency, mechanisms, and impacts, remains a subject requiring significant investigation. This review investigates the removal of MPs in CWs and assesses their impact on the removal of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus. The analysis identifies crucial factors influencing the removal of MPs, with substrate particle size and CWs structure playing key roles. The review highlights substrate retention as the primary mechanism for MP removal. MPs hinder plant nitrogen uptake, microbial growth, community composition, and nitrogen-related enzymes, reducing nitrogen removal in CWs. For phosphorus and carbon removal, adverse effects of MPs on phosphorus elimination are observed, while their impact on carbon removal is minimal. Further research is needed to understand their influence fully. In summary, CWs are a promising option for treating MPs-contaminated wastewater, but the intricate relationship between MPs and CWs necessitates ongoing research to comprehend their dynamics and potential consequences.
Microplastics in two different constructed wetlands systems for wastewater treatment: Removal and fate

Abstract:Wastewater is one of the main sources of microplastics (MPs) in the environment, but so far, most research has focused on large-scale centralized wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). This study investigated the removal and fate of MPs in two small-scale WWTPs (S1 and S2) using different constructed wetlands (CWs). Samples from the wastewater, substrates and macroinvertebrates of CWs were collected and analyzed to investigate the fate of MPs. Results showed that the total removal efficiency for MPs was 97 % in both S1 and S2 WWTPs, resulting in effluent concentrations approximately 0.5 particles/L. The CW units of S1 and S2 contributed 92 % and 89 %, respectively, indicating that both VF CWs and HSSF CWs have efficient MPs removal capability. Moreover, fibers were the most abundant shape detected in wastewater (74 % in S1 and 83 % in S2), as well as in substrates and macroinvertebrates. In the S2 CW, fibers had a lower removal efficiency (89 %) compared with other shapes, while in S1 CWs, all shapes had 93 % removal efficiency. The concentration of MPs in surface substrates (0.57–0.71 particles/g dry weight) of CWs did not show any differences between different CWs (p > 0.05). The concentration of MPs inside macroinvertebrates showed a significant decline between S1 CW1 (154.9 particles/g dw on average) and S1 CW2 (94.4 particles/g dw) (p < 0.05), which were consistent with the concentration of MPs in the influent of each CW. This study provides insights into MPs removal by different kinds of CWs and is beneficial for management of MPs with CWs.

Abstract:The increasing emissions of nanoplastics inevitably pose a potential threat to constructed wetland (CWs) ecosystems. However, to our knowledge, the studies on the impact of nanoplastics on CWs were mainly for the effect on nitrogen removal, but comprehensive research on wetlands is still lacking. Thus, we revealed the overall effects of polystyrene nanoparticles (PSNPs) on wastewater treatment performance, and separate exploration of macrophytes and microbes. Results showed that although 1 and 10 mg/L PSNPs had little influences on COD removal, they caused serious suppression in TN removal, and 10 mg/L PSNPs negatively affected the N H 4 + -N and TP removal. These suppressions were due to the accumulation of>97% PSNPs attached to the sand biofilm, which proved that CWs could effectively remove nanoplastics. As for macrophyte physiology, PSNPs significantly affected the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, peroxidase, and the content of malondialdehyde in each phase. The major photosynthetic pigment biosynthesis was inhibited with 10 mg/L PSNPs. Furthermore, the soil catalase activities and the relative abundances of main antioxidant enzymes were obviously impacted. Caused by excess nanoplastic-induced ROS, almost all activities of dehydrogenase, phosphatase, ammonia monooxygenase, nitrate reductase were significantly inhibited. As for metagenomics analysis, taxonomy annotation revealed that PSNPs negatively affected the major functional bacteria involved in global geochemical nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur cycle. Functional annotation analysis revealed that some indispensable metabolism pathways (oxidative phosphorylation, pyruvate metabolism, ABC transporter, two-component system, biofilm formation, etc.) were also inhibited. Additionally, nanoplastics reduced the overall pattern of genes related to nitrogen metabolism and partial genes in glucose degradation. Overall, our results comprehensively indicate that nanoplastic is a potential danger to wetland ecosystems and should receive more attention.

Abstract:Micro/nano-sized plastics (MPs/NPs) existing in wastewater system are the potential threats to nitrogen (N) biotransformation. Constructed wetlands (CWs) as wastewater treatment systems are considered the important barriers preventing MPs/NPs from entering the open water. However, little is known about how the accumulation of MPs/NPs affects microbial N transformation, dynamics, assembly, and metabolism of wetland microbiota. Herein, we constructed 12 wetland systems to address the above knowledge gaps over 300-day exposure to different sizes (3mm-60nm) and concentrations (10-1000μg/L) of MPs/NPs. The results showed that MPs/NPs accumulation caused decrease in NH 4 + -N removal (by 7.6%-71.2%) and microbial diversity and intriguingly altered microbiota composition (especially in the high-concentration groups) without damage on the high removal efficiency of NO 3 − -N and NO 2 − -N (66.2%-99.8%) in all except for the nano-sized plastic-exposed wetlands. Moreover, MPs/NPs exposure induced shift in the strengths of non-random species aggregation and segregation patterns co-differentiated by the size and concentration of MPs/NPs, and MPs/NPs accumulation created size-differentiated alternative niches for nitrogen-transforming bacteria, e.g., canonical nitrifiers ( Nitrospira and Nitrosomonas ) and denitrifiers ( Thauera, Comamonas , and Aquabacterium ), which were enriched in MPs groups where denitrifying enzyme-coding genes were also enriched, suggesting potential positive impact of larger plastics on denitrification. Our study highlights MPs/NPs-induced divergence in microbiota dynamics and nitrogen transformation in CWs, and provides important insights into how microbiota structurally and functionally respond to long-term MPs/NPs disturbance.

Abstract:The presence and fate of microplastics (MPs) in wastewater represent a subject of major concern, as wastewater is one of the main inputs of MPs to the environment. This study deals with the ability of horizontal subsurface-flow constructed wetlands (CWs), as tertiary treatment, to reduce the MPs concentration of secondary effluents. Different locations of a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) including raw wastewater, CW influent and final effluent, were sampled. Macroinvertebrates were collected from the CW to evaluate their potential role in the MPs distribution along the wetland. The global WWTP efficiency for MPs removal was 98%. MPs removal efficiency by CW was on average 88%, causing a significant reduction of the MPs concentration from 6.45 to 0.77 MP/L (p < 0.05), thus preventing them from entering vulnerable aquatic systems. The areal removal rate and the first order areal rate coefficient (kA) were estimated to be 3120 MPs/m2/d and 1.70 m/d, respectively. The most abundant size fraction was the one comprising MPs between 75 and 425 μm (51%), while the other size ranges analysed (40–75 and 425–5600 μm) accounted for 25 and 24%, respectively. Fiber was the most abundant shape in the WWTP influent (75%), the CW influent (54%) and effluent (71%). Non-significant differences were found between sites regarding size and shape distributions (p > 0.05). Macroinvertebrates can ingest a non-negligible quantity of MPs, with an average content of 166.2 MPs/g or 0.13 MPs/individual. Therefore, they could play a certain role in the MPs distribution inside CWs. Fiber was the most abundant shape for macroinvertebrates as well (89%), so attention should be paid to reduce their contamination at source. This study provides the first results on MPs removal in CWs as tertiary treatment and assesses the potential role of macroinvertebrates in their distribution along the CW, thus filling this gap of knowledge.

Abstract:Microplastic pollution has become emerging environmental concern around world. The wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are attributed to a major pathway for microplastics (MPs) to enter into aquatic environment. To understand the fate and control strategies of MPs in WWTPs, we investigated MPs at a full-scale WWTP, Eastern China, with two parallel wastewater treatment systems, i.e. oxidation ditch (OD) and membrane bioreactor (MBR) for case study. The influent MPs consisted of polyethylene terephthalate (PET, 47%), polystyrene (PS, 20%), polyethylene (PE, 18%) and polypropylene (PP, 15%). MP morphotypes dominated in fragments (65%) and fibers (21%), which mainly were PET, with limited films (12%) and foams (2%). Typical plastic microbeads were not observed. The dominant size of MPs was >500 mu m (40%) and 62.5-125 mu m (29%). MP concentrations increased across the treatment systems depends on facility of treatment process. Influent MPs were removed by 99.5% in MBR system versus 97% in OD system on the basis of plastic mass while 82.1% versus 53.6% on MP number. The removed MPs accumulated in sludge phase. MBR system has much higher MP removal efficiency than OD system, likely due to membrane filtration. The results suggest that the source control of MPs by eliminating MP fibers from laundry facilities, banning use of plastic microbeads, Styrofoam products and plastic bags and properly selecting WWTP treatment unit could significantly reduce the mass and number of MPs from WWTPs. The crucial factor for microplastics removal in large-scale subsurface-flow constructed wetlands

Abstract:Constructed wetlands (CWs) are an effective method for removing microplastics (MPs). Nevertheless, the understanding of the impact of various parameters on MPs removal within CWs remains incomplete. Through field investigations of large-scale CWs and the application of machine learning methods with an interpretable attribution technique (the Shapley Additive Explanation), we investigated the critical factors influencing MPs removal within CWs. The MPs abundance in the influent and the inlet of Z-CW (400.1 ± 20.8 items/L and 699.6 ± 50.6 items/kg) was significantly higher compared to that in M-CW (138.8 ± 20.5 items/L and 166.5 ± 36.8 items/kg), with no significant difference observed in the effluent. The primary characteristic of MPs is their fibrous and transparent appearance. The MPs removal range from 87.9% to 95.5 %, influenced by the types and characteristics of MPs, physical and chemical parameters, biofilms, and different processes. Among these factors, dissolved organic carbon with high humic content, aromaticity, and carboxyl abundance may serve as a crucial factor in MPs removal. The results of this study highlight the significance of physical and chemical parameters for the MPs removal in CWs, providing the necessary theoretical data for the construction of future large-scale engineering applications.
Negative impacts of nanoplastics on the purification function of submerged plants in constructed wetlands: Responses of oxidative stress and metabolic processes

Abstract:Constructed wetlands (CWs) are an important barrier to prevent nanoplastics (NPs) and microplastics (MPs) from entering receiving streams. However, little is known about how the accumulation of NPs affects the growth, photosynthesis, oxidative stress responses, and metabolism of plants, especially submerged plants that are widely used in CWs for water purification. Herein, we adopted Utricularia vulgaris (U. vulgaris), a typical submerged macrophyte as the model plant to address the above knowledge gaps under exposure to polystyrene NPs (PS-NPs, 500 nm, 0∼10 mg·L-1). Results showed that PS-NPs were absorbed by insect traps and further transported to stems and leaves of U. vulgaris, which limited plant height (6.8∼72.9%), relative growth rate (7.4∼17.2%), and photosynthesis (3.7∼28.2%). U. vulgaris suffered from oxidative stresses, as evidenced by the increase in malondialdehyde, antioxidant enzymes (catalase, peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase), and H2O2, especially under 1 and 10 mg·L-1. Abundances of 548 metabolites were quantified, and 291 metabolites were detected with altered levels after exposure, in which 25∼34% metabolites were up-regulated, and 32∼40% metabolites were down-regulated in metabolite expression. Metabolic pathways of the tricarboxylic acid cycle and amino acid were disrupted, in which citric acid, threonine, and adenine decreased, while amino acids (like serine, phenylalanine, histidine, etc.) increased first and then decreased with increasing PS-NPs concentrations. Moreover, PS-NPs reduced the removal efficiency of total nitrogen and phosphorus from water by U. vulgaris, bringing potential risks to aquatic ecosystems. These findings have greatly enhanced our understanding of the metabolic mechanisms and interactions of aquatic macrophytes that are heavily used in CWs in response to NPs stress, as well as the impact of NPs on CWs functioning.

Abstract:The widespread use of microplastics (MPs) has led to an increase in their discharge to wastewater treatment plants. However, the knowledge of impact of MPs on macro-performance and micro-ecology in simultaneous nitrification, denitrification, and phosphorus removal (SNDPR) systems is limited, hampering the understanding of potential risks posed by MPs. This study firstly comprehensively investigated the performance, species interactions, and community assembly under polystyrene (PS) and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) exposure in SNDPR systems. The results showed under PS (1, 10 mg/L) and PVC (1, 10 mg/L) exposure, total nitrogen removal was reduced by 3.38–10.15 %. PS and PVC restrained the specific rates of nitrite and nitrate reduction (SNIRR, SNRR), as well as the activities of nitrite and nitrate reductase enzymes (NIR, NR). The specific ammonia oxidation rate (SAOR) and activity of ammonia oxidase enzyme (AMO) were reduced only at 10 mg/L PVC. PS and PVC enhanced the size of co-occurrence networks, niche breadth, and number of key species while decreasing microbial cooperation by 5.85–13.48 %. Heterogeneous selection dominated microbial community assembly, and PS and PVC strengthened the contribution of stochastic processes. PICRUSt prediction further revealed some important pathways were blocked by PS and PVC. Together, the reduced TN removal under PS and PVC exposure can be attributed to the inhibition of SAOR, SNRR, and SNIRR, the restrained activities of NIR, NR, and AMO, the changes in species interactions and community assembly mechanisms, and the suppression of some essential metabolic pathways. This paper offers a new perspective on comprehending the effects of MPs on SNDPR systems.

Abstract:Sewage treatment plants are designed to handle wastes that include several types of pollutants, including microplastics (MPs), which are synthetic polymer materials fragmented to sizes < 5 mm. Investigating the abundance and removal efficiency rates of MPs in wastewater treatment plants is important because the water body to which plant effluents are discharged may be adversely affected by the released MPs. Therefore, the abundance, characteristics, and removal of MPs at two sewage treatment plants located on the southwest coast of Norway are studied. Twenty-four samples were collected across two sampling sessions by using an ad hoc-designed plastic-free water sampling device, which was improved by applying a cascade of certified stainless-steel sieves. A combined sequence of enzymatic and strong oxidative incubations was performed for sample preparation. The obtained samples were chemically characterized and quantified using thermoanalytical techniques. The overall amounts of polymers in the inlet wastewater and outlet water were 366-616 μg/L and 34-57 μg/L, respectively, indicating an approximate MPs removal efficiency of 78%-85%. Polyethylene (≈ 36%-68%), polypropylene (≈ 7%-48%), polystyrene (≈ 5%-6%), polyvinyl chloride (≈ 15%-26%), polyamide (≈ 2%), polymethacrylate (≈ 3%-4%), polycarbonate (≈ 2%), and polyethylene terephthalate (≈ 9%-32%) were detected in the investigated samples. In biosolids, the overall quantity of MPs was 3.8-5.5 mg/g dry weight across the two investigated sewage treatment plants. Polyethylene (≈ 24%-44%), followed by polyvinyl chloride (PVC) (≈ 11%-16%), and polyamide (≈ 2%-22%) were the most commonly recurring polymer types. The outcomes of this study indicate that MPs are removed efficiently from wastewaters. However, large amounts of MPs accumulate in biosolids. Therefore, sludge dumping management procedures need to be improved to lower the amount of MPs released into the environment through effluents and biosolids.
Combined environmental pressure induces unique assembly patterns of micro-plastisphere biofilm microbial communities in constructed wetlands

Abstract:The characteristics and dynamics of micro-plastisphere biofilm on the surface of microplastics (MPs) within artificial ecosystems, such as constructed wetlands (CWs), remain unclear, despite these ecosystems' potential to serve as sinks for MPs. This study investigates the dynamic evolution of micro-plastisphere biofilm in CWs, utilizing simulated wastewater containing sulfamethoxazole and humic acid, through physicochemical characterization and metagenomic analysis. Two different types of commercial plastics, including non-degradable polyethylene and degradable polylactic acid, were shredded into MPs and studied. The findings reveal that the types, shape and incubation time of MPs, along with humic acid content in wastewater, affected the quantity and quality of biofilms, such as the biofilm composition, spatial structure and microbial communities. After just 15 days into incubation, numerous microbials were observed on MP samples, with increases in biofilms content and enhanced humification of extracellular polymeric substances over time. Additionally, microbial communities on polylactic acid MPs, or those incubated for longer time, exhibit higher diversity, connectivity and stability, along with reduced vulnerability. Conversely, biofilms on polyethylene MPs were thicker, with higher potential for greenhouse gas emission and increased risk of antibiotic resistance genes. The addition of humic acid demonstrated opposite effects on biofilms across environmental interfaces, possibly due to its dual potential to produce light-induced free radicals and serve as a carbon source. Binning analysis further uncovered a unique assembly pattern of nutrients cycle genes and antibiotic resistance genes, significantly correlated within micro-plastisphere microbial communities, under the combined stress of nutrition and sulfamethoxazole. These results emphasize the shaping of micro-plastisphere biofilm characteristics by unique environmental conditions in artificial ecosystems, and the need to understand how DOM and other pollutants covary with MP pollution.
[Literature review report on safety evaluation about Kudiezi injection].

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To explore safety evaluation information about Kudiezi injection used in the clinical practice. METHOD Three Chinese literature databases were searched and 96 articles were downloaded. Safety information about the study question was extracted by researchers in the Excel form. Finally, 22 articles including 24 case reports were analyzed in this article. Five aspects about safety information were summarized. RESULT It was found that all the adverse drug reaction reports in the literature were improper. There was no clear causality relation inference. It was inaccurate that those reports were identified as adverse drug reactions. CONCLUSION Although 24 case reports were identified as adverse drug reaction the evidence for each report was insufficient. There is no scientific causality judgment among these reports, which were implied little significance to future health decision about Kudiezi injection.
Effects of chronic exposure to different sizes and polymers of microplastics on the characteristics of activated sludge

Abstract:<p>Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) have become an important source of microplastics (MPs) contamination and most MPs remain in the sludge inducing potential impacts on sludge disposal. However, little is known about the influence of MPs on the characteristics of sludge, which is essential for sludge disposal. In this study, the dewaterability of activated sludge in response to chronic exposure (60 days) to MPs of different sizes (213.7 nm ~ 4.2 mm) and polymers (polystyrene, polyethylene, and polyvinyl chloride) were investigated. Overall, different particle sizes caused more evident effects on sludge dewatering than different polymer types did. Millimeter MPs (~4 mm) dramatically reduced the dewaterability of sludge by 29.6% ~ 47.7%. These effects were mainly caused by the physical crushing of MPs on sludge flocs, except polyvinyl chloride (PVC)-MPs, possibly containing additives, induced toxicity on sludge. Moreover, 100 mg/L nano-size MPs (213 nm) also reduced the dewatering performance of sludge. The potential mechanism is that nano-size MPs inhibited sludge activity and decreased the abundance of key microorganisms, which subsequently altered the composition and spatial distribution of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), and finally impeded sludge dewatering. Our results highlight the impacts of different sizes of MPs on the characteristics of sludge, affecting the final disposal of sludge.</p>

Abstract:Combined sewer overflows (CSOs) release a significant amount of pollutants, including microplastics (MPs), due to the discharge of untreated water into receiving water bodies. Constructed Wetlands (CWs) offer a promising strategy for CSO treatment and have recently attracted attention as a potential solution for MP mitigation. Nevertheless, limited research on MP dynamics within CSO events and MP removal performance in full-scale CW systems poses a barrier to this frontier of application. This research aims to address both these knowledge gaps, representing the first investigation of a multi-stage CSO-CW for MP removal. The study presents one year of seasonal data from the CSO-CW upstream of the WWTP in Carimate (Italy), evaluating the correlation of MP abundance with different water quality/quantity parameters and associated ecological risks. The results show a clear trend in MP abundance, which increases with rainfall intensity. The strong correlation between MP concentration, flow rate, and total suspended solids (TSS) validates the first flush phenomenon hypothesis and its impact on MP release during CSOs. Chemical characterization identifies acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), polyethylene (PE), and polypropylene (PP) as predominant polymers. The first vertical subsurface flow (VF) stage showed removal rates ranging from 40 % to 77 %. However, the unexpected increase in MP concentrations after the second free water surface (FWS) stage suggests the stochasticity of CSO events and the different hydraulic characteristics of the CW units have diverse effects on MP retention. These data confirm filtration as the main retention mechanism for MP within CW systems. The MP ecological risk assessment indicates a high-risk category for most of the water samples, mainly related to the frequent presence of ABS fragments. The results contribute to the current understanding of MPs released by CSOs and provide insights into the performance of different treatment units within a large-scale CSO-CW system, suggesting the requirement for further attention.

Abstract:Microplastics (plastic particles < 5 mm; MPs) are ubiquitous in aquatic environments but their potential adverse ecological effects on biota remain poorly understood. This is in part because in typical ecotoxicology tests the toxic effects of MPs were found to be limited. To capture the potential find-scale effects of MPs on freshwater organisms, we employed ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry based untargeted metabolomics to investigate the metabolic impact of polystyrene microbeads microplastics (PS-MPs) of different sizes (0.1, 1, 10, 100 μm) and concentrations (1, 10, 100 mg/L) on a common freshwater microalga, Microcystis aeruginosa , after a 96-h exposure test. The phenotype-based results illustrated that while PS-MPs had no discernible effects on microalgal growth and photosynthesis, both oxidative stress and microcystin production were slightly increased. Metabolomics analysis revealed that the PS-MPs altered the global metabolic profile of the microalga. Specially, PS-MPs of larger size and higher concentration induced a larger number of differentially expressed metabolites. The PS-MPs significantly disturbed metabolisms involved in amino acid synthesis, membrane formation, nitrogen storage, and antioxidant defense of the microalga, consistent with the phenotypic observations. These results suggested several perturbed metabolic pathways, especially arginine-related pathways, as the mechanism. Our study showed that the insights provided by metabolomics-based approaches can enhance assessments of the ecological impacts of MPs on freshwater organisms.

Abstract:<p>Microplastics have become a global concern because of their adverse effects on ecosystems. Although wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are considered a potential source of microplastics in the environment, the effect of polystyrene nanoparticles on activated sludge performance is not clear. In this study, the effect of short-term exposure to polystyrene nanoparticles (PS-NPs) on activated sludge activity and sedimentation was investigated, and the mechanism behind the effect was analysed. At 5 g/L, the PS-NPs could be adsorbed completely by activated sludge (2.8 g VSS/L) and could be transferred from the aqueous phase to the sludge phase in a short period. At a low concentration (0.1 g/L), the PS-NPs significantly inhibited the endogenous respiration in the sludge by causing bacterial death and affecting the mass transfer in the sludge. Changes in the zeta potential of the sludge surface and in the components of extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) resulted in low sludge aggregation. PS-NPs also caused sludge disintegration, so that when the PS-NP concentration reached 5 g/L, the sludge sedimentation decreased by approximately 50%. Short-term PS-NP exposure has a significant effect on the activity and sedimentation of activated sludge, which could affect the WWTP effluent quality. The findings of this study provide new insight for evaluating the potential risks posed by nanoplastics in WWTPs.</p>

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) are a significant component of global pollution and cause widespread concern, particularly in wastewater treatment plants . While understanding the impact of MPs on nutrient removal and potential metabolism in biofilm systems is limited. This work investigated the impact of polystyrene (PS) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) on the performance of biofilm systems. The results revealed that at concentrations of 100 and 1000 μg/L, both PS and PET had almost no effect on the removal of ammonia nitrogen, phosphorus, and chemical oxygen demand , but reduced the removal of total nitrogen by 7.40–16.6%. PS and PET caused cell and membrane damage, as evidenced by increases in reactive oxygen species and lactate dehydrogenase to 136–355% and 144–207% of the control group. Besides, metagenomic analysis demonstrated both PS and PET changed the microbial structure and caused functional differences. Some important genes in nitrite oxidation (e.g. nxrA ), denitrification (e.g. narB , nirABD , norB , and nosZ ), and electron production process (e.g. mqo , sdh , and mdh ) were restrained, meanwhile, species contribution to nitrogen-conversion genes was altered, therefore disturbing nitrogen-conversion metabolism. This work contributes to evaluating the potential risks of biofilm systems exposed to PS and PET, maintaining high nitrogen removal and system stability.
