Abstract:The serious global microplastic pollution has attracted public concern in recent years. Microplastics are widely distributed in various environments and their pollution is already ubiquitous in the ocean system, which contributes to exponential concern in the past decade and different research areas. Due to their tiny size coupled with the various microbial communities in aquatic habitats capable of accumulating organic pollutants, abundant literature is available for assessing the negative impact of MPs on the physiology of marine organisms and eventually on the human health. This study summarizes the current literature on MPs in the marine environment to obtain a better knowledge about MP contamination. This review contains three sections: (1) sources and fates of MPs in the marine environment, (2) impacts of MPs on marine organisms, and (3) bacteria for the degradation of marine MPs. Some measures and efforts must be taken to solve the environmental problems caused by microplastics. The knowledge in this review will provide background information for marine microplastics studies and management strategies in future.

Analysis of Pfmdr 1 gene in mefloquine-resistant Plasmodium falciparum.

Abstract:Drug resistance in Plasmodium falciparum is a serious problem in most endemic areas. Recent studies have suggested the potential involvement of genes in the MDR gene family in resistance to quinoline-containing compounds in P. falciparum. In our present studies, a molecular analysis of pfmdr 1 in isolate strain of P. falciparum, 523a R, from Japanese mefloquine-resistant patient was done to determine the reported association of pfmdr 1 intragenic alleles and mefloquine resistance, and to examine the antimalarial activities of several antimalarial agents against the P. falciparum strain. The antimalarial activities against the strain was decreased susceptibility to mefloquine, artemisinin and halofantrine, in contrast increased susceptibility to chloroquine. The DNA sequence analysis of pfmdr 1 gene in a strain reveled no association of intragenic alleles with mefloquine resistance. Furthermore, the overexpression of pfmdr1 mRNA have been observed and it is about 7.2 times higher than sensitive strain. Our data shows that overexpression of pfmdr1 gene may be associated in mefloquine-resistance mechanism.

Abstract:Plastic products, despite their undeniable utility in modern life, pose significant environmental challenges, particularly when it comes to recycling. A crucial concern is the pervasive introduction of microplastics (MPs) into aquatic ecosystems, with deleterious effects on marine organisms. This review presents a detailed examination of the methodologies developed for MPs removal in water treatment systems. Initially, investigating the most common types of MPs in wastewater, subsequently presenting methodologies for their precise identification and quantification in aquatic environments. Instruments such as scanning electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, and Raman tweezers stand out as powerful tools for studying MPs. The discussion then transitions to the exploration of both existing and emergent techniques for MPs removal in wastewater treatment plants and drinking water treatment plants. This includes a description of the core mechanisms that drive these techniques, with an emphasis on the latest research developments in MPs degradation. Present MPs removal methodologies, ranging from physical separation to chemical and biological adsorption and degradation, offer varied advantages and constraints. Addressing the MPs contamination problem in its entirety remains a significant challenge. In conclusion, the review offers a succinct overview of each technique and forwards recommendations for future research, highlighting the pressing nature of this environmental dilemma.

Abstract:Currently, the presence of plastic remnants poses a serious menace to the environment. This review offers a comprehensive analysis of advancements in microplastic particles (MPs) removal technologies from aquatic systems. Sophisticated techniques, including Pyrolysis-Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry (Py-GC–MS), Raman Spectroscopy, Fourier-Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), Confocal Laser Scanning Microscopy (CLSM) and Thermogravimetric Analysis (TGA), offer promising approaches for identifying and quantifying these particles. The core focus of this review is on removal technologies, where a comprehensive analysis of existing methods is provided. Mechanical methods, such as filtration and sedimentation, are assessed for their efficacy in capturing MPs. Chemical approaches, including coagulation and flocculation, are examined in terms of their potential to enhance removal efficiency. Advanced technologies, such as electrochemical and ultrasonic methods, are explored for their innovative contributions to MPs removal. The advantages and limitations of each removal technique are critically evaluated. While mechanical methods excel in large-scale applications, they may struggle with smaller MPs, and their efficiency can be influenced by factors like flow rates and water turbidity. Chemical methods exhibit promising results in enhancing removal efficiency but may introduce secondary pollutants. Advanced technologies show great potential but require further research to optimize their scalability and environmental impact. Future perspectives and recommendations are outlined to guide the development of effective and sustainable MPs removal strategies. Integration of multiple removal techniques, coupled with ongoing research on biodegradable alternatives, is proposed to address the limitations of individual methods.

Abstract:Waste Management &Research, Ahead of Print. In recent years, the environmental pollution of microplastics (MPs) has increasingly drawn our attention. MPs are small fragments of plastics that are commonly dispersed in the environment. The accumulation of environmental MPs is due to population growth and urbanization, while natural disasters such as hurricanes, flooding and human activity may influence their distribution. The leaching of chemicals from MPs raises a significant safety problem and environmental approaches aimed at reducing the use and recycling of plastics, with the replacement by bioplastics and wastewater treatment developments are called for. This summary also helps in demonstrating the connection between terrestrial and freshwater MPs and wastewater treatment plants as the major contributors to environmental MPs by discharges of sludge and effluent. More research on the classification, detection, characterization and toxicity of MPs are essential to enable greater options and solutions. Control initiatives need to intensify the comprehensive study of MP waste control and management information programmes in the fields of institutional engagement, technological research and development, legislation and regulation. A comprehensive quantitative analysis approach for MPs should be created in the future, and more reliable traceability analysis methods should be built to examine further its environmental activity and existence, where this should be done to improve scientific research on MP pollution in terrestrial, freshwater and marine environments and hence, develop more scientific and rational control policies.

This review examines the multifaceted issues of MPs pollution in terrestrial ecosystem, covering various aspects from additives in plastics to global legislation and sustainable solutions. The study explores the widespread distribution of MPs worldwide and their potential antagonistic interactions with co-occurring contaminants, emphasizing the need for a holistic understanding of their environmental implications. The influence of MPs on soil and plants is discussed, shedding light on the potential consequences for terrestrial ecosystems and agricultural productivity. The aging mechanisms of MPs, including photo and thermal aging, are elucidated, along with the factors influencing their aging process. Furthermore, the review provides an overview of global legislation addressing plastic waste, including bans on specific plastic items and levies on single-use plastics. Sustainable solutions for MPs pollution are proposed, encompassing upstream approaches such as bioplastics, improved waste management practices, and wastewater treatment technologies, as well as downstream methods like physical and biological removal of MPs. Abstract:This review offers a comprehensive insight into environmentally friendly bioremediation techniques for the removal of MPs from the water. Major technological challenges are identified, and recommendations for future research are provided. Despite several challenges, bioremediation is a promising approach that can revolutionize the MP removal process if the major challenges are addressed. Microplastics (MPs) are a class of emerging contaminants that have gained significant attention in recent years. The presence of MPs in the aquatic environment is reported to have serious potential environmental and health impacts. Therefore, it is essential to develop efficient and sustainable strategies for the remediation of MPs from the aqueous environment. Traditional techniques for the remediation of MPs from an aqueous environment have limitations, including high costs and the production of secondary pollutants. In this scenario, bioremediation offers several advantages and has emerged as a cost‐effective, eco‐friendly, and efficient strategy for the removal of MPs from water. This article critically reviews the recent progress in the applications of bioremediation for the removal of different MPs from water. The effects of key factors such as the characteristics of MPs, environmental conditions, and types of microorganisms on the removal of MPs are elaborated in detail. The underlying mechanisms involved in the removal of MPs by microorganisms are also discussed comprehensively. Major technological challenges are identified, and recommendations for future research are provided. Despite several challenges, bioremediation is a promising approach that can revolutionize the MP removal process if the major challenges are addressed.

Abstract:Plastic waste discarded into aquatic environments gradually degrades into smaller fragments, known as microplastics (MPs), which range in size from 0.05 to 5 mm. The ubiquity of MPs poses a significant threat to aquatic ecosystems and, by extension, human health, as these particles are ingested by various marine organisms including zooplankton, crustaceans, and fish, eventually entering the human food chain. This contamination threatens the entire ecological balance, encompassing food safety and the health of aquatic systems. Consequently, developing effective MP removal technologies has emerged as a critical area of research. Here, we summarize the mechanisms and recently reported strategies for removing MPs from aquatic ecosystems. Strategies combining physical and chemical pretreatments with microbial degradation have shown promise in decomposing MPs. Microorganisms such as bacteria, fungi, algae, and specific enzymes are being leveraged in MP remediation efforts. Recent advancements have focused on innovative methods such as membrane bioreactors, synthetic biology, organosilane-based techniques, biofilm-mediated remediation, and nanomaterial-enabled strategies, with nano-enabled technologies demonstrating substantial potential to enhance MP removal efficiency. This review aims to stimulate further innovation in effective MP removal methods, promoting environmental and social well-being.

Abstract:The literature was searched for clinical trials evaluating the use of 300 mg ranitidine daily in the acute treatment of gastric ulcer. All available trials were examined, and the results compared between countries to determine the extent of any geographical variation in ulcer healing rates. Published placebo studies in gastric ulcer were also reviewed for comparison. Sixty‐six publications were inspected to determine the trial design, country of origin, gastric ulcer healing rates, determined endoscopically, and details of patient demography.

Abstract:IEEE Control Systems Magazine 75 Nonlinear Model-Based Process Control, by Rashid M. Ansari and Moses O. Tadé, Springer, 2000, 232 pp., ISBN 185233213, $76.00. Reviewed by M. Ahmed. This book discusses the application of nonlinear model-based multivariable control and optimization to petroleum refining processes. The authors present an integrated approach to process analysis, control, and optimization wherein the same steady-state, nonlinear process model is used at each stage. This approach is superior to l inear model-based approaches because nonlinear models surpass linear models in capturing process nonlinearity, the use of one model eliminates problems arising from the use of multiple models, and the potential for optimizer-controller mismatch is reduced. The generic model control (GMC) law is the basis of this approach. In GMC, the control law directly embeds the process model and is based on present and historic output measurements. Control moves based on these measurements and the process model provide the necessary control action to achieve the predefined GMC reference trajectories of the outputs. The reference trajectories are defined based on the initial system outputs and set points. Slack variables defining the trajectory departure from the chosen specification curves are added to the GMC control law for both controlled and constraint variables. Slack variables ensure that a solution to the set of equations exists. The constrained multivariable control problem is solved as a nonlinear constrained optimization problem, which minimizes a function of slack variables. The control architecture consists of NMBC-Model for extracting models from process data; NMBC-Build for controller configuration, simulation, and tuning; NMBC-Connect for connecting the controller to the process; and NMBC-Display for the human-machine interface. Ansari and Tadé present challenging real-time control applications. A nonlinear controller was applied on a crude fractionator to control naptha end point, kerosene flash point, and bottom reflux temperature by manipulating top draw, side draw, and bottom reflux duty. Intermediate and upper reflux duties were disturbances. The results show that the performance of the nonlinear controller was superior to a linear controller for controlling the end points within constraints over a wide range of operating conditions. On a fluidized catalytic cracker reactor-regenerator, a nonlinear controller manipulates riser outlet temperature, feed flow, feed temperature, and combustion airflow to control flue gas O2 to a set point, and to maintain regenerator bed temperature within zone limits. The constraints are fuel gas flow and the outputs of the riser outlet temperature controller and wet gas compressor suction pressure controller. Feed composition is the disturbance. The control strategy translates operating constraints into set-point and zone limit objectives for the controlled variables. The nonlinear controller outperformed a linear controller in constraint handling, decoupling, and inverse response. The use of one model for control and optimization reduced the time required for plant tests. Inferential models predict naptha final boiling point and kerosene flash point in crude distillation, isopentane of debutanizer overhead, Reid vapor pressure of debutanizer bottom, and reformate octane in catalytic reforming. These models were developed using correlation-based techniques obtained from steady-state models of the process or plant operating experience. Results show that the prediction of these models was within the repeatability of lab results. In a closed loop for quality control, these models eliminate time delays associated with analyzers/lab results and improve control performance. On a catalytic reformer reactor, a nonlinear controller manipulates reactor inlet temperatures to control weighted average inlet temperature (WAIT) while meeting the constraints of heater tube temperatures and fuel gas valve positions. WAIT is set by an octane inferential model forming a closed-loop WAIT/octane control. In the absence of constraints, WAIT and the required temperature profile are met by a unique set of inlet temperatures. When constraints are activated, the target WAIT is the first priority and the temperature profile is relaxed to enforce constraint limits. The nonlinear controller did better than a linear controller in reducing octane deviation and handling disturbances in feed rate. The book includes a review of model-based control and optimization techniques and suggestions for future research. Embedded optimization is suggested as a potentially fruitful direction. This book is a concise and useful source for nonlinear control theory and applications in petroleum refining. The practical aspects have strong appeal for the practicing engineer.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs), small synthetic particles, have emerged as perilous chemical pollutants in aquatic habitats, causing grave concerns about their disruptive effects on ecosystems. The fauna and flora inhabiting these specific environments consume these MPs, unwittingly introducing them into the intricate web of the food chain. In this comprehensive evaluation, the current methods of identifying MPs are amalgamated and their profound impacts on marine and freshwater ecosystems are discussed. There are many potential risks associated with MPs, including the dangers of ingestion and entanglement, as well as internal injuries and digestive obstructions, both marine and freshwater organisms. In this review, the merits and limitations of diverse identification techniques are discussed, including spanning chemical analysis, thermal identification, and spectroscopic imaging such as Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, and fluorescent microscopy. Additionally, it discusses the prevalence of MPs, the factors that affect their release into aquatic ecosystems, as well as their plausible impact on various aquatic ecosystems. Considering these disconcerting findings, it is imperative that appropriate measures should be taken to assess the potential risks of MP pollution, protect aquatic life and human health, and foster sustainable development.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) have recently been recognized as potential pollutants and carriers for pathogens in marine, freshwater, and terrestrial environments. They can carry microbial pathogens, hydrophobic organic compounds, persistent organic pollutants, and heavy metals on the surface of these particles leading to unwanted effects on living organisms. Their harmful effects on aquatic and terrestrial organisms have been well established. This includes damage to cell membranes, tissues, and physiological processes. Further, being highly persistent in natural ecosystems, they can amass in various environments over long periods of time. Their accumulation of MPs substantially depends on plastic usage and its management policies around the world; therefore, a closer look at the potential hazards and build-up of MPs is timely. Also, it is crucial to understand the significance of currently established methods on their removal from the ecosystem including activated sludge treatment, coagulation and flocculation, and removal via membrane bioreactors. Among them, constructed wetlands are considered an environmentally friendly technology with ease in operation and low cost that could efficiently remove MPs from wastewater. This article specifically compiles existing literature on the current understanding of MPs in the environment, their role as environmental carriers, interactions in natural ecosystems, the recent developments in their research, and the way forward.

Abstract:The occurrence of microplastics (MPs) in aquatic environments has been a global concern because they are toxic and persistent and may serve as a vector for many legacies and emerging pollutants. MPs are discharged to aquatic environments from different sources, especially from wastewater plants (WWPs), causing severe impacts on aquatic organisms. This study mainly aims to review the Toxicity of MPs along with plastic additives in aquatic organisms at various trophic compartments and available remediation methods/strategies for MPs in aquatic environments. Occurrences of oxidative stress, neurotoxicity, and alterations in enzyme activity, growth, and feeding performance were identical in fish due to MPs toxicity. On the other hand, growth inhibition and ROS formation were observed in most of the microalgae species. In zooplankton, potential impacts were acceleration of premature molting, growth retardation, mortality increase, feeding behaviour, lipid accumulation, and decreased reproduction activity. MPs togather with additive contaminants could also exert some toxicological impacts on polychaete, including neurotoxicity, destabilization of the cytoskeleton, reduced feeding rate, growth, survivability and burrowing ability, weight loss, and high rate of mRNA transcription. Among different chemical and biological treatments for MPs, high removal rates have been reported for coagulation and filtration (>86.5 %), electrocoagulation (>90 %), advanced oxidation process (AOPs) (30 % to 95 %), primary sedimentation/Grit chamber (16.5 % to 58.84 %), adsorption removal technique (>95 %), magnetic filtration (78 % to 93 %), oil film extraction (>95 %), and density separation (95 % to 100 %). However, desirable extraction methods are required for large-scale research in MPs removal from aquatic environments.

Abstract:The environmental impacts of plastic have attracted the interest of the scientists , media, and policymakers, but the impact of microplastics (MPs) on our environment remains largely unknown. These novel pollutants are so widespread that the scientific community has defined the present historical epoch as "The Plasticene". There is growing concern over the bioaccumulation and entry of these miniature plastic particles released from almost every article of daily use into the food chains, which will ultimately contaminate the human population. Given the presence of these pollutants in almost every strata and biome of the earth, adsorption of other toxic pollutants and generation of novel categories of chemicals, MP pose an eminent challenge to almost every biotic community. At present times, we have very little knowledge about the possible effects of micropollutants as risk assessment and risk management rely on standardized data and reliable methodology adopted, so in present times it is impossible to evaluate the toxic response and deleterious effects on biotic communities. The detailed understanding of origin, exposure pathways, toxic response of biota, remediation options, and precautionary operations are of prime importance for averting the plastic disaster. MPs significant affect rooting ability of plants, reduce photosynthetic ability by dysregulation of chlorophyll a/chlorophyll b ratios and cause imbalance in carbon/nitrogen balance. MPs have most prominent effect on aquatic animals where they cause feeding disruption, alterations in metabolism, hormonal imbalance and henceforth reproductive problems. On cellular levels MPs causes cytotoxicity, nephrotoxicity, immune dysregulation, neurotoxicity and genotoxicity. MPs have been found to affect the microbes which results in replacement of beneficial organisms by harmful organisms at niche areas and MPs acts as vehicle and transport agents for transport and proliferation of harmful organism like Ostreopsis and Coolia and Vibrio genera. Owing to the deleterious effects on environment and biota, various remedial measures proposed by researchers includes biodegradation, coagulation, photo-catalytic degradation and thermal degradation. Therefore, current manuscript attempts to review the status of these pollutants in various biomes of the biosphere, their possible toxic effects on residents of the hydrosphere, atmosphere, and lithosphere, their effect on human health, and various remediation processes with the intention of special and surgical emphasis on future research in the area for fulfillment of the knowledge gap.

Microplastics in ecosystems: Critical review of occurrence, distribution, toxicity, fate, transport, and advances in experimental and computational studies in surface and subsurface water

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs), particles under 5 mm, pervade water, soil, sediment, and air due to increased plastic production and improper disposal, posing global environmental and health risks. Examining their distribution, quantities, fate, and transport is crucial for effective management. Several studies have explored MPs' sources, distribution, transport, and biological impacts, primarily focusing on the marine environment. However, there is a need for a comprehensive review of all environmental systems together for enhanced pollution control. This review critically examines the occurrence, distribution, fate, and transport of MPs in the following environments: freshwater, marine, and terrestrial ecosystems. The concentration of MPs is highly variable in the environment, ranging from negligible to significant amounts (0.003–519.223 items/liter in water and 0–18,000 items/kg dry weight sediment, respectively). Predominantly, these MPs manifest as fibers and fragments, with primary polymer types including polypropylene, polystyrene, polyethylene, and polyethylene terephthalate. A complex interplay of natural and anthropogenic actions, including wastewater treatment plant discharges, precipitation, stormwater runoff, inadequate plastic waste management, and biosolid applications, influences MPs' presence and distribution. Our critical synthesis of existing literature underscores the significance of factors such as wind, water flow rates, settling velocities, wave characteristics, plastic morphology, density, and size in determining MPs' transport dynamics in surface and subsurface waters. Furthermore, this review identifies research gaps, both in experimental and simulation, and outlines pivotal avenues for future exploration in the realm of MPs.

Abstract:The world is facing a severe issue regarding microplastics (MPs) pollution, which is ascribed to its small micron size, low capture, and difficulties in removing it from the environment. The MPs' pollution control and removal policies throughout the world were a pioneering subject of plastics waste, but also a crucial problem that needs to be addressed by the governments and the communities. Considering the MPs pollution as a main scientific problem, this review summarized the conducted studies for MPs separation from environments including soil, water, and sediments, along with their removal performance, advantages, and limitations. Existing removal methods were synoptically presented. The main challenges of existing MPs removal methods are discussed, and future work recommendations are proposed. Meanwhile, there is no standardized method for MPs extraction from different environmental media. From soil, oil-based extraction or filtration can be used for easy separation of MPs while still there is a need to propose an effective standardized method. Water or sediments samples with low organic content can be filtered or sieved but stepwise methods need digestion or density separation before filtration. Although, complex samples need extra steps like digestion along with density treatment for MPs separation from samples. Employing a suitable approach with a synchronized method for MPs isolation from different media will help to do a comparison across the world. Additionally, future research should focus on the development of a cost-effective separation method or make a combination of different techniques to accompaniment corresponding limitations for efficient separation from different media. This study will help scientists choose the best separation method for MPs removal from different environmental media.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) pollution has emerged as a critical environmental issue with far-reaching consequences for ecosystems and human health. These are plastic particles measuring <5 mm and are categorized as primary and secondary based on their origin. Primary MPs are used in various products like cosmetics, scrubs, body wash, and toothpaste, while secondary MPs are generated through the degradation of plastic products. These have been detected in seas, rivers, snow, indoor air, and seafood, posing potential risks to human health through the food chain. Detecting and quantifying MPs are essential to understand their distribution and abundance in the environment. Various microscopic (fluorescence microscopy, scanning electron microscopy) and spectroscopy techniques (FTIR, Raman spectroscopy , X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) have been reported to analyse MPs. Despite the challenges in scalable removal methods, biological systems have emerged as promising options for eco-friendly MPs remediation. Algae, bacteria, and fungi have shown the potential to adsorb and degrade MPs in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) offering hope for mitigating this global crisis. This review examines the sources, impacts, detection, and biological removal of MPs, highlighting future directions in this crucial field of environmental conservation. By fostering global collaboration and innovative research a path towards a cleaner and healthier planet for future generations can be promised.

Abstract:Microplastics (MPs) possess a strong capacity to adsorb and biodegrade slowly, resulting in substantial harm to the environment and potential health risks. In recent years, a flourishing study of MPs has led to valuable advancements. This review article presents a comprehensive bibliometric analysis of global microplastic pollution, providing a deep understanding of published data, current progress, research trends, and focal points. We conducted extensive searches in the Scopus and Web of Science Core Collection databases from 2012 to 2021, utilizing the widely used R software for analysis. Our findings demonstrate a significant increase in micro(nano)plastic publications, with a growth rate of 73.0% from 2012 to 2021. China emerges as the predominant contributor in this field. The journal Science of the Total Environment has published the highest proportion of relevant articles (16.1%) and received the most citations (9801). The analysis further emphasizes polymer products and MPs as key research areas in the past decade. This study serves as a fundamental basis for future investigations into micro(nano)plastic pollution's impacts on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
