Abstract:Heavy metal pollution has a harmful impact on the health of all living beings. The goal of this study was to compare the impacts of zinc (Zn), lead (Pb), iron (Fe), and manganese (Mn) on two Egyptian streams in Aswan Governorate. In addition, aquatic Chironomidae larvae were exposed to a variety of heavy metal concentrations for two days. The mortality rate was determined, and the median lethal concentrations (LC50) were estimated. The most harmful metal for Chironomidae larvae was Pb, followed by Zn, Fe, and Mn. Metal bioconcentration in Chironomidae larvae increases with increasing concentrations of metals. The enzymatic response to heavy metals uptake in Chironomidae larvae; namely, lipid peroxidation, superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione-S-transferase, and glutathione peroxidase were determined. Although the Pb-treated group recorded the highest lipid peroxidation, it showed the lowest glutathione peroxidase activity. The glutathione-S-transferase enzyme was less active in the Zn-treated group, as was the superoxide dismutase enzyme, and the catalase enzyme was the least active in the Zn-treated group. Changes in randomly amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) profiles were detected following heavy metal treatments at various doses when compared to controls. This study gives insight into how cruise ship activities and industrial pollution in rivers endanger aquatic life and hence, human life.

Abstract:Object Land snails are found to be an appropriate sentinel organism, and the biomarkers chosen are effective for terrestrial heavy metal biomonitoring. The study aimed to compare the biological, biochemistry, and histology of two land snails in the Ismailia governorate, Egypt. Methods Random snails were collected from January 2015 to December 2015 from two sites in the Ismailia Governorate. The study used morphometric parameters and oxidative stress as well as histopathological changes to clarify the impact of heavy metals on two of the land snails. Results It was noticed that most of the morphometric parameters were higher in Eobania vermiculata (Sp. 1) than in Monacha obstructa (Sp. 2). In the more polluted areas with heavy metals, lipid peroxidation (LPO) and total protein contents were changed in the snails. The snails displayed lower levels of glutathione (GSH) as compared to snails at a less polluted site. GSH and LPO levels have a negative relationship between them. Histopathological alterations in the digestive gland were more obvious in the general architecture of the digestive gland which had lost its tubular appearance. The excretory cells showed an increase in their excretory granules' number and size while calcium cells decreased. Gonad follicles have lost their normal architecture with the degeneration of some stages of spermatogenesis and oogenesis. Conclusion The overall results display the usefulness of E. vermiculata and M. obstructa land snails as bioindicator organisms and support the application of this ecotoxicological approach for evaluating the biological impact of toxins. E. vermiculata is more abundant than M . obstructa . The density, morphometric, biochemical, and histology of E. vermiculata and M. obstructa were different.
Biological and biochemical parameters of Biomphalaria alexandrina snails exposed to the plants Datura stramonium and Sesbania sesban as water suspensions of their dry powder

Abstract:Four plant species, as a dry powder of their leaves, were tested against Biomphalaria alexandrina snails, the intermediate host of Schistosoma mansoni. The bioassay tests revealed the plants Datura stramonium and Sesbania sesban to be more toxic to the snails than the other two ones. Therefore, they were tested against snails’ fecundity (Mx), reproduction rate (Ro) and their infection with S. mansoni miracidia. In addition, total protein concentration and the activities of the transaminases (AsT and AlT) and phosphatases (AcP and AkP) enzymes in hemolymph and tissues of snails treated with these plants were determined. As well, glucose concentration in snails’ hemolymph was evaluated.Exposure of snails for 4weeks to LC10 and LC25 of the plants D. stramonium and S. sesban dry powder markly suppressed their Mx and Ro. The reduction rates of Ro for snails exposed to LC25 of these plants were 62.1% and 76.4%, respectively. As well, a considerable reduction in the infection rates of snails exposed to these plants either during, pre- or post-miracidial exposure was recorded. Thus, infection rates of snails treated during miracidial exposure with LC10 of D. stramonium and S. sesban were 41.7% and 52.2%, respectively, compared to 92.6% for control group (P<0.01). These plants, also, reduced the duration of cercarial shedding and cercarial production/snail. So, snails exposed to LC25 of these plants shed 372.8 and 223.2 cercariae/snail, respectively, compared to 766.3 cercariae/infected control snail (P<0.01).The results, also, revealed that glucose and total protein concentrations in hemolymph of snails treated with LC10 and LC25 of these plants were decreased, meanwhile, the activities of the enzymes AsT, AlT, AcP and AkP were elevated (P<0.01). However, the activity of AcP in tissues of treated snails was decreased compared to that of control ones. It is concluded that LC25 of the plants D. stramonium and S. sesban negatively interferes with biological and physiological activities of B. alexandrina snails, consequently it could be effective in interrupting and minimizing the transmission of S. mansoni.

Abstract:Oxyfluorfen (Goal 24%EC) herbicide is widely used in agriculture for weed control. Biomphalaria alexandrina snails can be used as bioindicator of the chemical pollution in the aquatic environment. The objective of this study was to evaluate the molluscicidal activity of this herbicide on Biomphalaria alexandrina snails and how it affected its biological system. The present study revealed a molluscicidal effect of oxyfluorfen 24%EC on these snails at LC50 5.9 mg/l. After exposure of snails to the sub-lethal concentrations (LC0, LC10, or LC25) of this herbicide, the survival rates, reproductive rate (R0), and fecundity (Mx) of adult B. alexandrina snails were significantly decreased in comparison with the control group. Also, levels of testosterone and estradiol were decreased significantly. It caused alterations in the antioxidant system, where exposure to sub-lethal concentration of this herbicide caused significant increases in levels of lipid peroxide malondialdehyde (MDA), catalase (CAT), and superoxide dismutase (SOD), while it significantly decreased glutathione transferase (GST). Histopathological changes in the digestive gland included severe damage in the digestive cells, where, they lost their tips and some were degenerated, while the secretory cells increased in number. Regarding the hermaphrodite gland, there were losses of the connective tissues, irregular sperms, and the eggs degenerated. These findings concluded that B. alexandrina snails can be used as a bioindicator for pollution with pesticide in the aquatic environment.

Abstract:The concentrations of 14 metals, namely, chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), cobalt (Co), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), selenium (Se), arsenic (As), strontium (Sr), cadmium (Cd), tin (Sn), antimony (Sb), mercury, (Hg), and lead (Pb), have been studied in freshwater mollusk Lamellidens marginalis collected from Dhimbe reservoir. In addition, also studied the cellular and antioxidative status to assess metal contamination as pollution biomarkers. The levels of all the 14 metals were elevated in different sampling sites of Dhimbe reservoir. The level of metals in the L. marginalis was followed as Mn > Zn > Ni > Sr > Cr > Cu > Hg > Se > Sn > Pb > As > Co > Cd > Sb. The oxidative biomarkers viz. catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione-S-transferase (GST); glycolytic enzymes viz. lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and malate dehydrogenase (MDH); and protein metabolic enzymes viz. aspartate amino transferase (AST), alanine amino transferase (ALT), and lipid peroxidation (LPO) were significantly (p < 0.01) higher, while neurotransmitter enzymes such as acetylcholine esterase (AChE) were significantly inhibited in muscle of L. marginalis (p < 0.01) collected from different sampling sites. Therefore, based on our results, we could recommend that the Dhimbe reservoir is moderately metal contaminated and investigation based on biochemical parameters such as antioxidative enzymes, cellular biomarkers, and AChE are strong indicators for metal contamination; hence, these parameters are successfully applied as reliable biomarkers for monitoring contaminated freshwater ecosystems.

Abstract:The abundance of metal pollutants in freshwater habitats poses serious threats to the survival and biodiversity of aquatic organisms and human beings. This study intends for the first time to assess the pernicious influences of heavy metals in Al Marioteya canal freshwater in Egypt, compared to Al Mansoureya canal as a reference site utilizing the creeping water bug (Ilyocoris cimicoides) as an ecotoxicological model. The elemental analysis of the water showed a significantly higher incidence of heavy metals, including cadmium (Cd), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), and lead (Pb), in addition to the calcium (Ca) element than the World Health Organization's (WHO) permitted levels. The Ca element was measured in the water samples to determine whether exposure to heavy metals-induced oxidative stress engendered Ca deregulation in the midgut tissues of the creeping water bug. Remarkably, increased levels of these heavy metals were linked to an increase in chemical oxygen demand (COD) at the polluted site. Notably, the accumulation of these heavy metals in the midgut tissues resulted in a substantial reduction in antioxidant parameters, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and ascorbate peroxidase (APOX), along with a marked rise in malondialdehyde (MDA), cytochrome P450, and protein carbonyl levels. These results clearly indicate a noticeable disturbance in the antioxidant defense system due to uncontrollable reactive oxygen species (ROS). Notably, the results demonstrated that oxidative stress caused disturbances in Ca levels in the midgut tissue of I. cimicoides from polluted sites. Furthermore, the comet and flow cytometry analyses showed considerable proliferations of comet cells and apoptotic cells in midgut tissues, respectively, exhibiting prominent correlations, with pathophysiological deregulation. Interestingly, histopathological and ultrastructural examinations exposed noticeable anomalies in the midgut, Malpighian tubules, and ovarioles of I. cimicoides, emphasizing our findings. Overall, our findings emphasize the potential use of I. cimicoides as a bioindicator of heavy metal pollution in freshwater to improve sustainable water management in Egypt.

Evaluation of the early results of a loop stoma with a plastic rod in comparison to a loop stoma made with a skin bridge.

Abstract:UNLABELLED Loop stoma allows reducing the percentage of anastomotic leak and re-operation caused by this complication. Our department has performed the loop stoma on a skin bridge since 2011. The aim of the study was to evaluate the early results of treatment after the skin bridge loop stoma creation in comparison with the stoma made on a plastic rod. Both groups had 20 patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS The study involved 40 patients with ileostomy, operated 2010-2013. We evaluated 20 patients with a loop ileostomy on a plastic rod, compared to 20 other patients with a skinbridge ileostomy. The study included 24 men and 16 women. Median age was 68.3. All evaluated patients were previously operated due to rectal cancer. RESULTS It has been shown that the surgical site infection is more common in the group with a plastic rod (5 vs 1 patient). Inflammation of the skin around the stoma occurred in 18 patients (90%) in the first group, while no such complication was found in patients in the second group. The average number of exchanged ostomy wafers was 2.9 per week in the first group of patients, and 1,1 in the second group (p 0.05). CONCLUSIONS The creation of the skin bridge stoma allows for tight fit of the ostomy appliance immediately after surgery completion. The equipment has stable and long-lasting contact with the skin, no skin inflammatory changes occur. Also the surgical site infection rates are lower in this group of patients. As perioperative patient does not require an increased number of ostomy appliance, the cost of treatment can be considered as an important aspect.
Heavy metal accumulation and interaction dynamics in Brachidontes pharaonis: a bioindicator study in the Red Sea

Abstract:This work evaluates utilizing the native mussel Brachidontes pharaonis as a bioindicator and sentinel organism for monitoring heavy metals Cu, Zn, and Cd along the Red Sea coast of Egypt. Samples were collected from four coastal locations, and the concentrations of heavy metals in the mussels' tissues, shells, seawater, and sediments were analyzed. Subsequently, bioassay experiments were conducted by exposing the organisms to single, binary, and tertiary metal mixtures, and the accumulation of heavy metals was determined to elucidate the dynamics of metal–metal interactions. Field samples revealed significant variations in heavy metal concentrations in the mussels' soft tissues across different locations, with Zn ranging from 58.1 to 121.0 μg/g dw (dry weight), Cu ranging between 18.3 and 36.7 μg/g dw, and Cd ranging from 0.3 to 1.04 μg/g dw. Conversely, the shells exhibited minimal spatial variations, with much lower contents of Cu (ranging from 1.9 to 2.8 μg/g dw) and Zn (ranging from 1.8 to 1.9 μg/g dw). However, the shells accumulated Cd at higher levels (ranging from 1.4 to 2.1 μg/g dw) compared to the soft tissues. Following a 96-h bioassay experiment, the soft tissues displayed a linear accumulation of metals with increasing exposure dose, with Cd showing the highest accumulation rate (approximately threefold) followed by Zn (twofold) and Cu (1.7-fold). In binary and tertiary exposures, the metals exhibited a general antagonistic interaction, affecting each other's accumulation. On the other hand, the accumulation of heavy metals in the shells after the 96-h bioassay exposure did not follow a consistent linear pattern, suggesting that accumulation during this short experimental period occurs primarily through adsorption rather than the biological pathway.

Abstract:The condensation reaction between diaminodiphenylmethane (MDA) and methomyl afforded the HL ligand. Cu (II) and Zn (II) chloro complexes of this ligand were prepared and their structures were elucidated by using some analytical and spectral methods. The thin-layer film method was used to assess the toxicity of the obtained compounds against Theba pisana species under laboratory conditions. The obtained data showed a remarkable toxicological activity of the achieved compounds. The tested compounds caused alternations in the quantity of the mucus secretions of the tested species after treatments leading to snail mortality. The achieved lab data authenticated the elevated toxicological impact of Zn (II) chelate on Theba pisana species (LC50 = 52.97 ppm). The white garden snail showed a considerable susceptibility to the HL ligand and Cu (II) complex (LC50 = 56.89 and 85.53 ppm, respectively). Field trials were conducted by spraying method and the population reduction percentage of the white garden snail was assessed. The obtained field trial results were compatible with those of laboratory tests. The tested compounds displayed significant reduction percentages of Theba pisana population after 7, 14, and 21 days of treatments. The HL ligand, Cu (II) and Zn(II) complexes recorded 94.47, 95.58 and 96.04%, respectively, as reduction percentages in Theba pisana population after 21 days of treatments under field conditions.
Bioaccumulation of heavy metals in water, sediments, and tissues and their histopathological effects on Unio tigridis (Bourguignat 1852)

Abstract:The current study assessed the accumulation rate of four heavy metals (i.e., Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb) in water, sediment, and tissues of the freshwater mussels Unio tigridis. The trace metal concentrations in water, sediment, and tissues showed the following decreasing trend: Zn (mean W: 31.08 mg/L; mean S: 10.495 mg/g; and mean T:4.925 mg/g) > Cu (mean W: 6.538 mg/L; mean S: 46.712 mg/g; and mean T: 17.127) > Pb (mean W: 31.08 mg/L; mean S: 10.495 mg/g; and mean T:4.925 mg/g) > Cd (mean W: 0.277 mg/L; mean S: 0.77 mg/g; and mean T: 0.674 mg/g), and the toxic metal concentrations exceeded the recommended acceptable limits. Necrosis, blood cell infiltration, atrophy, epithelium damage, brown cells, and fat agglomerates were the most common histological changes found in the digestive glands of mussels. These histopathological lesions can be considered reliable biomarkers in biomonitoring programs for heavy metal contamination in aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract:Deep-sea mining activities can potentially release metals, which pose a toxicological threat to deep-sea ecosystems. Nevertheless, due to the remoteness and inaccessibility of the deep-sea biosphere, there is insufficient knowledge about the impact of metal exposure on its inhabitants. In this study, deep-sea mussel Gigantidas platifrons , a commonly used deep-sea toxicology model organism, was exposed to manganese (100, 1 000 μg/L) or iron (500, 5 000 μg/L) for 7 d, respectively. Manganese and iron were chosen for their high levels of occurrence within deep-sea deposits. Metal accumulation and a battery of biochemical biomarkers that related to antioxidative stress in superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), malondialdehyde (MDA); immune function in alkaline phosphatase (AKP), acid phosphatase (ACP); and energy metabolism in pyruvate kinase (PK) and hexokinase (HK) were assessed in mussel gills. Results showed that deep-sea mussel G. platifrons exhibited high capacity to accumulate Mn/Fe. In addition, most tested biochemical parameters were altered by metal exposure, demonstrating that metals could induce oxidative stress, suppress the immune system, and affect energy metabolism of deep-sea mussels. The integrated biomarker response (IBR) approach indicated that the exposure to Mn/Fe had a negative impact on deep-sea mussels, and Mn demonstrated a more harmful impact on deep-sea mussels than Fe. Additionally, SOD and CAT biomarkers had the greatest impact on IBR values in Mn treatments, while ACP and HK were most influential for the low- and high-dose Fe groups, respectively. This study represents the first application of the IBR approach to evaluate the toxicity of metals on deep-sea fauna and serves as a crucial framework for risk assessment of deep-sea mining-associated metal exposure.

Abstract:Major tailings dam failures have occurred recently around the world and resulted in severe environmental impacts, such as metal contamination. Manganese is a metal highly associated with mining activities, largely detected in mining dam collapses. This metal is considered necessary for different organisms, but it can be toxic and cause oxidative stress and genetic damage in fishes. In this study, we investigated the toxic effects of manganese on Astyanax lacustris , by exposing the fish individually to different concentrations of this metal (2.11, 5.00, and 10.43 mg/L) for 96 h. To assess the effects of manganese, we used biochemical biomarkers (glutathione S-transferase, catalase, and acetylcholinesterase enzyme activity) and the manganese bioaccumulation in different tissues (liver and gills). The obtained data showed that only at concentrations of 5.00 mg/L and 10.43 mg/L the activity of glutathione S-transferase differed significantly. Additionally, the acetylcholinesterase activity in the brain tissue was inhibited. The highest level of manganese bioaccumulation was observed in the liver and branchial tissue. Overall, we concluded that high concentrations of manganese may cause physiological changes in Astyanax lacustris .

Abstract:This study aims to evaluate the liver, gill, and muscle tissue heavy metal accumulation of the thin lip mullet ( Chelon ramada ) from Ain Ziana Lagoon, Benghazi. The heavy metals included zinc, copper, lead, and manganese. Between September 2021 and August 2022, specimens were collected on a monthly basis. They were identified using DNA barcoding, namely the CO1 gene, which is associated with the sequence that is BankIt in the NCBI gene bank (accession number OR533708). The research tracked the lagoon's physicochemical characteristics, finding that heavy metal concentrations spiked in the summer and that water temperature, pH, and salinity varied throughout the year. Except for copper in the winter, lead, manganese, and copper levels were all above acceptable limits, according to a comparison with EPA (2005) regulations. On the other hand, zinc levels were under these limitations. The amounts of all metals in the sediment regularly exceeded the limits set by the EPA. Zinc and manganese levels in fish tissues were within the approved ranges according to WHO and FAO standards but lead and manganese levels were far higher than allowed, indicating possible pollution from sewage or industrial sources. There were noticeable seasonal patterns in bioaccumulation, especially during the warmer months, but manganese did not exhibit a distinct pattern. Also noted that the thin lip mullet's mineral absorption and release capacities varied with the different seasons and tissues. Lastly, the Metal Pollution Index (MPI) showed that there was a larger possibility for bioaccumulation in the liver, gill, and muscle during the study period.

Abstract:As a result of the global industrial revolution, contamination of the ecosystem by heavy metals has given rise to one of the most important ecological and organismic problems, particularly human, early developmental stages of fish and animal life. The bioaccumulation of heavy metals in fish tissues can be influenced by several factors, including metal concentration, exposure time, method of metal ingestion and environmental conditions, such as water temperature. Upon recognizing the danger of contamination from heavy metals and the effects on the ecosystem that support life on earth, new ways of monitoring and controlling this pollution, besides the practical ones, had to be found. Diverse living organisms, such as insects, fish, planktons, livestock and bacteria can be used as bioindicators for monitoring the health of the natural ecosystem of the environment. Parasites have attracted intense interest from parasitic ecologists, because of the variety of different ways in which they respond to human activity contamination as prospective indices of environmental quality. Previous studies showed that fish intestinal helminths might consider potential bioindicators for heavy metal contamination in aquatic creatures. In particular, cestodes and acanthocephalans have an increased capacity to accumulate heavy metals, where, for example, metal concentrations in acanthocephalans were several thousand times higher than in host tissues. On the other hand, parasitic infestation in fish could induce significant damage to the physiologic and biochemical processes inside the fish body. It may encourage serious impairment to the physiologic and general health status of fish. Thus, this review aimed to highlight the role of heavy metal accumulation, fish histopathological signs and parasitic infestation in monitoring the ecosystem pollutions and their relationship with each other.

Abstract:Abstract Bioaccumulation of toxic metals in marine gastropods, including spotted babylon snail may cause a serious treats to human via food chain. Therefore, the present study investigates the metal contents in the spotted babylon snail, Babylonia areolata based on two sample groups, which are the whole sample and sample without the digestive system using Inductively Coupled Plasma with Atomic Emission Spectrometry (ICP-MS). The concentration pattern of the metals in sample with digestive system was As > Fe > Cu > Zn > Cd > Hg > Sn > Cr and As > Fe > Zn > Cu > Cd > Cr > Hg for sample without digestive system. Overall, the concentrations of these heavy metals were lower in samples without digestive system. Meanwhile, lead (Pb) and antimony (Sb) were not detected in both sample groups. Maximum permissible limits of toxic metals in food were compared and indicated that the heavy metals in B. areolata were within the safety levels except for As (sample with and without digestive system) and Cd (sample with digestive system). The exposure risk of heavy metals in B. areolata at the Kemasin coast, Kelantan is at a permissible level for the consumer provided that the digestive system is removed from the flesh.

Abstract:Abstract Samples of water, sediment and two native plants ( Eichhornia crassipes and Ceratophyllum demersum ), collected seasonally from eight sites, were analyzed to investigate the level of contamination with metals (Fe, Mn, Ni, Co, Zn, Cu, Cr, Pb and Cd) in the Nile River in the Cairo region, using heavy metal pollution and contamination indices in the case of water, and the geoaccumulation index, the pollution load index, the enrichment factor and the potential ecological risk factor in the case of sediment. The results clarified that the levels of metals among three compartments were in order: sediments > plants > water. The Nile water in Cairo is not critically polluted by the studied metals and the metal pollution index for most sites does not exceed the critical limit (< 100). Sediment samples showed a clear accumulation of Mn, Ni and Cd when compared with benchmarks cited by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), especially during low flow seasons. The contribution of Cd to the ecological risk assessment was about 80%, while the contribution of Ni was about 10%, reflecting that these elements originated primarily from anthropogenic sources. Eichhornia crassipes and Ceratophyllum demersum have a higher accumulation capacity for Mn, Cu and Fe compared to the other studied metals.

Abstract:Pomacea canaliculata, as an invasive exotic species in Asia, can adversely affect crop yields, eco-environment, and human health. Application of molluscicides containing metaldehyde is one effective method for controlling P. canaliculata. In order to investigate the effects of metaldehyde on adult snails, we conducted acute toxicological experiments to investigate the changes in enzyme activities and histopathology after 24 h and 48 h of metaldehyde action. The results showed that the median lethal concentrations (LC) of metaldehyde on P. canaliculata were 3.792, 2.195, 1.833, and 1.706 mg/L at exposure times of 24, 48, 72, and 96 h, respectively. Treatment and time significantly affected acetylcholinesterase (AChE), glutathione S-transferase (GST), and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) activity, with sex significantly affecting AChE, GST, and TAC activity and time significantly affecting carboxylesterase (CarE). In addition, the interaction of treatment and time significantly affected the activity of GST, CarE and TAC. In addition, histopathological changes occurred in the digestive glands, gills and gastropods of apple snail exposed to metaldehyde. Histological examination of the digestive glands included atrophy of the digestive cells, widening of the hemolymph gap, and an increase in basophils. In treated snails, the hemolymph gap in the gills was widely dilated, the columnar cells were disorganized or even necrotic, and the columnar muscle cells in the ventral foot were loosely arranged and the muscle fibers reduced. The findings of this study can provide some references for controlling the toxicity mechanism of invasive species.

Abstract:Abnormalities in oligodendroglial cells and nodal regions of the myelinated fibers in spinal cord and optic nerve of the mutant mouse Jimpy are described. Membranous tubes were found in the oligodendroglial cells which may have derived from abnormal membrane formation in these cells, thus representing dystopic myelin membrane formation. The rare myelin sheaths present in the Jimpy spinal cord were never found to extend over a distance greater than one internode. They terminated in halfnode structures which often showed abnormalities in the relation between axon and myelin sheath. These observations are interpreted to be further indications that the Jimpy defect consists of a dysmyelination due to oligodendroglial insufficiency.

Abstract:Phytoremediation of eight metals in mangrove forests was investigated by focusing on Avicennia marina at three locations along the Egyptian Red Sea coast. Average concentrations of metals in sediment followed the sequence Fe > Mn > Zn > Pb > Cr > Cu > Ni, while Cd was below the detection limit. Metal pollution index and enrichment factor indicated contamination of sediment by Pb, Cu, and Mn. Translocation factors from roots to seeds and leaves were highest for Cd and Mn, respectively, while bioaccumulation factors showed the highest absorptivity of Ni by roots to seeds and leaves organs. The variety in metals mobility and bioaccumilation may be attributed to the physicochemical properties of metals that affect their solubility and bioavailability. Multivariable analysis indicated the contribution of water and sediment characteristics to metal absorption. The study presents that the integrating approach of water, sediment, and plants may be a cornerstone for better recognizing the mangrove environment.
