Abstract:In recent years, the elderly population has increased, which requires more research on their health status. IoT has revolutionized device connectivity and remote access, making it an ideal solution for medical telemetry. Various plans have been presented to use the Internet of Things in the field of health. One of these plans is a fall detection system and notification to health centres and elderly families. One of the most critical requirements of fall detection algorithms is their accuracy. It is essential that the fall detection algorithm does not falsely send an alert to the elderly family, nurse or physician. Therefore, the accuracy of the fall detection algorithm should be increased by adding other techniques. In the proposed method of this research, this issue is solved by providing an intelligent framework based on clustering and ECG signal. The accuracy rate of the proposed detection algorithm is 97.1%.

Abstract:Early detection of high fall risk is an important process of fall prevention in hospitalized elderly patients. Hospitalized elderly patients can face several falling risks. Monitoring systems can be utilized to protect health and lives, and monitoring models can be less effective if the alarm is not invoked in real time. Therefore, in this paper we propose a monitoring prediction system that incorporates artificial intelligence. The proposed system utilizes a scalable clustering technique, namely the Catboost method, for binary classification. These techniques are executed on the Snowflake platform to rapidly predict safe and risky incidence for hospitalized elderly patients. A later stage employs a deep learning model (DNN) that is based on a convolutional neural network (CNN). Risky incidences are further classified into various monitoring alert types (falls, falls with broken bones, falls that lead to death). At this phase, the model employs adaptive sampling techniques to elucidate the unbalanced overfitting in the datasets. A performance study utilizes the benchmarks datasets, namely SERV-112 and SV-S2017 of the image sequences for assessing accuracy. The simulation depicts that the system has higher true positive counts in case of all health-related risk incidences. The proposed system depicts real-time classification speed with lower training time. The performance of the proposed multi-risk prediction is high at 87.4% in the SERV-112 dataset and 98.71% in the SV-S2017 dataset.

Abstract:An Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled human-centered smart healthcare monitoring system can be useful in life saving, specifically for diabetes patients. Diabetes and heart patients need real-time and remote monitoring and recommendation-based medical assistance. Such human-centered smart healthcare systems can not only provide continuous medical assistance to diabetes patients but can also reduce overall medical expenses. In the last decade, machine learning has been successfully implemented to design more accurate and precise medical applications. In this paper, a smart sensing technologies-based architecture is proposed that uses AI and the Internet of Things (IoT) for continuous monitoring and health assistance for diabetes patients. The designed system senses various health parameters, such as blood pressure, blood oxygen, blood glucose (non-invasively), body temperature, and pulse rate, using a wrist band. We also designed a non-invasive blood sugar sensor using a near-infrared (NIR) sensor. The proposed system can predict the patient's health condition, which is evaluated by a set of machine learning algorithms with the support of a fuzzy logic decision-making system. The designed system was validated on a large data set of 50 diabetes patients. The results of the simulation manifest that the random forest classifier gives the highest accuracy in comparison to other machine learning algorithms. The system predicts the patient's condition accurately and sends it to the doctor's portal.

Abstract:The acute coronary syndromes, including unstable angina and acute myocardial infarction, currently constitute a major preoccupation of clinical cardiology. This century has witnessed a remarkable evolution in our clinical concepts of these syndromes. Herrick1 described the survival of patients with acute coronary thrombosis early in the century. The introduction of the ECG led to major clinical advances in the definition of acute myocardial infarction during the first half of this century and furnished the basis of modern coronary care. In the latter half of this century, the advent of coronary arteriography permitted definition in the living patient of coronary stenoses due to atherosclerosis. The introduction of this diagnostic technique allowed the development of rational treatment modalities such as coronary artery bypass surgery and, subsequently, percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty. Until recently, it seemed that we had achieved a firm understanding of the pathophysiology of human coronary artery disease and had devised appropriate modes of therapy for its major manifestations. Yet, recent clinical data suggest that we still have much to learn about the pathophysiology of the acute coronary syndromes. Bypass surgery and angioplasty aim to restore blood flow to sites beyond hemodynamically significant stenoses in the coronary arteries. These revascularization therapies effectively relieve angina pectoris in many cases (although often not permanently). Quite naturally, the availability of these modalities led the cardiology community to focus on high-grade coronary stenosis, visible by angiography, as the critical issue in coronary heart disease. Much of the basis of contemporary cardiology and cardiac surgery rests on the axiom: the greater the stenosis, the greater the risk of a clinical event such as myocardial infarction or unstable angina pectoris. Abstract:A fall of an older adult often leads to severe injuries and is found to be a significant reason for the death due to post-traumatic complications. Many falls happen in the home atmosphere and prevail unrecognized. Thus, the need for reliable early fall detection is necessary for fast help. Lately, the emergence of wearables, smartphones, IoT, etc., made it possible to develop systems fall detection which aids in the remote monitoring of the elderly. The goal is to allow intelligent algorithms and smartphones to detect falls for elderly care and to monitor them regularly. This work presents the Artificial Intelligence of Things for Fall Detection (AIOTFD) system using a slime mould algorithm (SMA) to optimize the final data. The features extracted using SqueezeNet further CNN based SMA used for data optimization. The validation of the AIOTFD model performance is evaluated through the Multiple Cameras Fall Dataset (MCFD) and UR Fall Detection dataset (URFD). The empirical results accentuated the assuring realization of the model compared to other state-of the art methods.The obtained results shows our proposed AIOTFD attains accuracy of 99.82% and 99.79% and databases can be used for additional investigation and optimizations to increase the recognition rate to enhance the independent life of the elderly.

Abstract:Background: Continuous surveillance helps people with diabetes live better lives. A wide range of technologies, including the Internet of Things (IoT), modern communications, and artificial intelligence (AI), can assist in lowering the expense of health services. Due to numerous communication systems, it is now possible to provide customized and distant healthcare. Main problem: Healthcare data grows daily, making storage and processing challenging. We provide intelligent healthcare structures for smart e-health apps to solve the aforesaid problem. The 5G network must offer advanced healthcare services to meet important requirements like large bandwidth and excellent energy efficacy. Methodology: This research suggested an intelligent system for diabetic patient tracking based on machine learning (ML). The architectural components comprised smartphones, sensors, and smart devices, to gather body dimensions. Then, the preprocessed data is normalized using the normalization procedure. To extract features, we use linear discriminant analysis (LDA). To establish a diagnosis, the intelligent system conducted data classification utilizing the suggested advanced-spatial-vector-based Random Forest (ASV-RF) in conjunction with particle swarm optimization (PSO). Results: Compared to other techniques, the simulation's outcomes demonstrate that the suggested approach offers greater accuracy.

AI was created to find a few disorders such as Diabetes, Heart disease and Gait disturbances. Each disease has various symptoms among patients or elderly. Dataset is retrieved from the Kaggle repository to execute AI-enabled IoT-CPS technology. For the classification, AI-enabled IoT-CPS Algorithm is used to discover diseases. The experimental results demonstrate that compared with existing algorithms, the proposed AI-enabled IoT-CPS algorithm detects patient diseases and fall events in elderly more efficiently in terms of Accuracy, Precision, Recall and F-measure.

Abstract:In the realm of sustainable IoT and AI applications for the well-being of elderly individuals living alone in their homes, falls can have severe consequences. These consequences include post-fall complications and extended periods of immobility on the floor. Researchers have been exploring various techniques for fall detection over the past decade, and this study introduces an innovative Elder Fall Detection system that harnesses IoT and AI technologies. In our IoT configuration, we integrate RFID tags into smart carpets along with RFID readers to identify falls among the elderly population. To simulate fall events, we conducted experiments with 13 participants. In these experiments, RFID tags embedded in the smart carpets transmit signals to RFID readers, effectively distinguishing signals from fall events and regular movements. When a fall is detected, the system activates a green signal, triggers an alarm, and sends notifications to alert caregivers or family members. To enhance the precision of fall detection, we employed various machine and deep learning classifiers, including Random Forest (RF), XGBoost, Gated Recurrent Units (GRUs), Logistic Regression (LGR), and K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), to analyze the collected dataset. Results show that the Random Forest algorithm achieves a 43% accuracy rate, GRUs exhibit a 44% accuracy rate, and XGBoost achieves a 33% accuracy rate. Remarkably, KNN outperforms the others with an exceptional accuracy rate of 99%. This research aims to propose an efficient fall detection framework that significantly contributes to enhancing the safety and overall well-being of independently living elderly individuals. It aligns with the principles of sustainability in IoT and AI applications.

Abstract:Emerging trends in healthcare have seen an increased need for improved monitoring, and as a result, machine learning (ML) and the Internet of Things have been integrated to develop smart systems that can provide rapid and accurate health assessments. With an inclusive view on mobility anomaly detection in patients, this paper aims to improve hospital patient safety. Patients wear or place these things, and the IoT sensor network then gathers real-time motion data. The information is then moved to the central server. The system was taught the machine learning part using a large number of normal and abnormal patient movement data. It also shows a way to differentiate between common activities and those that might indicate ill health. It comprises an IoT sensor network, a data processing unit, and an ML anomaly discovery module. There are sensors on the Internet of Things that have a wide range of movement data. Then, these are run through an ML model that captures the spatial-temporal dependencies between different sets based upon more sophisticated techniques like the Naive Bayes Classifier. Several sensors were implemented to predict fall detection, and prediction mainly works on the channel state information (CSI), giving less efficiency on the results. In this paper, using Machine learning (ML) methods, the study analysis to detect falls is implemented. By using machine learning algorithms, the efficiency gains will up to 96%. The main advantage of the system is it can be used as a wearable device. In the market, MEMS sensors are available to detect the acceleration changes in a person. The alert for the doctor is achieved by MY MQTT. The previous data is used to store in an excel sheet or pen drive, and then the mems sensor of X, Y values are taken and at some point of time extract the data by analyzing the accelerometer data and previous data. From that, if fall detection takes place, it alerts like alarm sound and also it sends a message to the caretaker and hospital people. If a fall is not detected, it once again checks the entire process.

Abstract:Introduction: Falls are a major cause of accidents that can lead to serious injuries, especially among geriatric populations worldwide. Ensuring constant supervision in hospitals or smart environments while maintaining comfort and privacy is practically impossible. Therefore, fall detection has become a significant area of research, particularly with the use of multimodal sensors. The lack of efficient techniques for automatic fall detection hampers the creation of effective preventative tools capable of identifying falls during physical exercise in long-term care environments. The primary goal of this article is to examine the benefits of using multimodal sensors to enhance the precision of fall detection systems. Methods: The proposed paper combines time-frequency features of inertial sensors with skeleton-based modeling of depth sensors to extract features. These multimodal sensors are then integrated using a fusion technique. Optimization and a modified K-Ary classifier are subsequently applied to the resultant fused data. Results: The suggested model achieved an accuracy of 97.97% on the UP-Fall Detection dataset and 97.89% on the UR-Fall Detection dataset. Discussion: This indicates that the proposed model outperforms state-of-the-art classification results. Additionally, the proposed model can be utilized as an IoT-based solution, effectively promoting the development of tools to prevent fall-related injuries.

Abstract:The detection of activities of daily living (ADL) and the detection of falls is of utmost importance for addressing the issue of serious injuries and death as a consequence of elderly people falling. Wearable sensors can provide a viable solution for monitoring people in danger of falls with minimal external involvement from health or care home workers. In this work, we recorded accelerometer data from 35 healthy individuals performing various ADLs, as well as falls. Spatial and frequency domain features were extracted and used for the training of machine learning models with the aim of distinguishing between fall and no fall events, as well as between falls and other ADLs. Supervised classification experiments demonstrated the efficiency of the proposed approach, achieving an F1-score of 98.41% for distinguishing between fall and no fall events, and an F1-score of 88.11% for distinguishing between various ADLs, including falls. Furthermore, the created dataset, named “ShimFall&ADL” will be publicly released to facilitate further research on the field.

Abstract:Due to the increase in the global aging population and its associated age-related challenges, various cognitive, physical, and social problems can arise in older adults, such as reduced walking speed, mobility, falls, fatigue, difficulties in performing daily activities, memory-related and social isolation issues. In turn, there is a need for continuous supervision, intervention, assistance, and care for elderly people for active and healthy aging. This research proposes an ambient assisted living system with the Internet of Medical Things that leverages deep learning techniques to monitor and evaluate the elderly activities and vital signs for clinical decision support. The novelty of the proposed approach is that bidirectional Gated Recurrent Unit, and Gated Recurrent Unit deep learning techniques with mutual information-based feature selection technique is applied to select robust features to identify the target activities and abnormalities. Experiments were conducted on two datasets (the recorded Ambient Assisted Living data and MHealth benchmark data) with bidirectional Gated Recurrent Unit, and Gated Recurrent Unit deep learning techniques and compared with other state of art techniques. Different evaluation metrics were used to assess the performance, findings reveal that bidirectional Gated Recurrent Unit deep learning techniques outperform other state of art approaches with an accuracy of 98.14% for Ambient Assisted Living data, and 99.26% for MHealth data using the proposed approach.

Abstract:Fall detection is a major problem in the healthcare department. Elderly people are more prone to fall than others. There are more than 50% of injury-related hospitalizations in people aged over 65. Commercial fall detection devices are expensive and charge a monthly fee for their services. A more affordable and adaptable system is necessary for retirement homes and clinics to build a smart city powered by IoT and artificial intelligence. An effective fall detection system would detect a fall and send an alarm to the appropriate authorities. We propose a framework that uses edge computing where instead of sending data to the cloud, wearable devices send data to a nearby edge device like a laptop or mobile device for real-time analysis. We use cheap wearable sensor devices from MbientLab, an open source streaming engine called Apache Flink for streaming data analytics, and a long short-term memory (LSTM) network model for fall classification. The model is trained using a published dataset called “MobiAct.” Using the trained model, we analyse optimal sampling rates, sensor placement, and multistream data correction. Our edge computing framework can perform real-time streaming data analytics to detect falls with an accuracy of 95.8%.

Abstract:Remote monitoring of a fall condition or activities and daily life (ADL) of elderly patients has become one of the essential purposes for modern telemedicine. Internet of Things (IoT) and artificial intelligence (AI) techniques, including machine and deep learning models, have been recently applied in the medical field to automate the diagnosis procedures of abnormal and diseased cases. They also have many other applications, including the real-time identification of fall accidents in elderly patients. The goal of this article is to review recent research whose focus is to develop AI algorithms and methods of fall detection systems (FDS) in the IoT environment. In addition, the usability of different sensor types, such as gyroscopes and accelerometers in smartwatches, is described and discussed with the current limitations and challenges for realizing successful FDSs. The availability problem of public fall datasets for evaluating the proposed detection algorithms are also addressed in this study. Finally, this article is concluded by proposing advanced techniques such as lightweight deep models as one of the solutions and prospects of futuristic smart IoT-enabled systems for accurate fall detection in the elderly.

The application of machine learning (ML) in areas of geriatric healthcare such as fall detection, has, consequently been an area of active research. Wearable systems for fall detection has the advantage of being light-weight and low power-consuming, yet reasonably accurate without being overly intrusive. However, the accuracy of fall detection using wearable systems depends, among other factors, on the types of sensors embedded in them. The use of inertial motion unit (IMU) sensors for fall detection, combined with machine learning classifiers applied on datasets collected from IMU sensors is an area of active research. In this paper, we analyze the impact of using IMU sensor parameters in combination with vital signs parameters, on the performance of ML algorithms for fall detection. We compare the performance of various ML algorithms on the dataset we collected for this purpose. We also perform statistical analysis to examine the relative importance of the various features on the behavior of ML classifiers.

Abstract:Utilization of the Internet of Things and ubiquitous computing in medical apparatuses have "smartified" the current healthcare system. These days, healthcare is used for more than simply curing patients. A Smart Healthcare System (SHS) is a network of implanted medical devices and wearables that monitors patients in real-time to detect and avert potentially fatal illnesses. With its expanding capabilities comes a slew of security threats, and there are many ways in which a SHS might be exploited by malicious actors. These include, but are not limited to, interfering with regular SHS functioning, inserting bogus data to modify vital signs, and meddling with medical devices. This study presents HealthGuard, an innovative security architecture for SHSs that uses machine learning to identify potentially harmful actions taken by users. HealthGuard monitors the vitals of many SHS-connected devices and compares the vitals to distinguish normal from abnormal activity. For the purpose of locating potentially dangerous actions inside a SHS, HealthGuard employs four distinct machine learning-based detection approaches (Artificial Neural Network, Decision Tree, Random Forest, and k-Nearest Neighbor). Eight different smart medical devices were used to train HealthGuard for a total of twelve harmless occurrences, seven of which are common user activities and five of which are disease-related occurrences. HealthGuard was also tested for its ability to defend against three distinct forms of harmful attack. Our comprehensive analysis demonstrates that HealthGuard is a reliable security architecture for SHSs, with a 91% success rate and in F1-score of 90% success.

Abstract:Recent advances in smartphones and remote monitoring based on the Internet of Things (IoT) have enabled improved multidimensional intelligent services. An IoT-based monitoring system is composed of several sensor devices to measure vital signs, fall detection, energy consumption, and visual recognition. As the data collected by the sensors are transmitted to cloud storage through the Internet, data security is a major concern when transmitting data from remote locations. To improve data security and prediction accuracy, in this study, we proposed a smart and secure multimedia IoT monitoring system for smart homes backed up by smart grid supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA). The proposed system employs state-of-the-art IoT microcontrollers and hardware devices and integrates them in a manner that significantly affects the accuracy and speed of the entire system. Furthermore, the information gathered from IoT is securely transferred through private channels and stored on the cloud, which can be accessed authentically and reliably using an information system built into an IoT application. The output was extensively compared in terms of power consumption and delivery ratio, which were based on the values collected with sequence numbers. The comparative analysis demonstrated that the proposed approach provides increased prediction accuracy and better security. Hence, the proposed power-efficient prototype model monitors the entire smart home environment in real time and serves as an early warning system for critical situations.

Abstract:Smart healthcare network is an innovative process of synergizing the benefits of sensors, Internet of things (IoT), and big data analytics to deliver improved patient care while reducing the healthcare costs. In recent days, healthcare industry faces vast challenges to save the data generated and to process it in order to extract knowledge out of it. The increasing volume of healthcare data generated through IoT devices, electronic health, mobile health, and telemedicines screening requires the development of new methods and approaches for their handling. In this chapter, we briefly discuss some of the healthcare challenges and big data analytics evolution in this fast-growing area of research with a focus on those addressed to smart health care through remote monitoring. In order to monitor the healthcare conditions of an individual, support from sensor and IoT devices is essential. The objective of this study is to provide healthcare services to the diseased as well as healthy population through remote monitoring using intelligent algorithms, tools, and techniques with faster analysis and expert intervention for better treatment recommendations. The delivery of healthcare services has become fully advanced with integration of technologies. This study proposes a novel smart healthcare big data framework for remotely monitoring physical daily activities of healthy and unhealthy population. The framework is validated through a case study which monitors the physical activities of athletes with sensors placed on wrist, chest, and ankle. The sensors connected to the human body transmit the signals continuously to the receiver. On the other hand, at the receiver end, the signals that are stored and analyzed through big data analytics techniques and machine learning algorithms are used to recognize the activity. Our proposed framework predicts whether the player is active or inactive based on the physical activities. Our proposed model has provided an accuracy of 99.96% which can be adapted to remotely monitor health conditions of old patients in case of Alzheimer’s disease by caregivers, rehabilitation, obesity monitoring, remotely monitoring of sports persons physical exertion, and it can also be beneficial for remotely monitoring chronic diseases which require vital physical information, biological, and genetic data.
