Abstract:This article aims to reduce the influence of heavy fog on the outdoor imaging equipment and to maximally improve the foggy image resolution. It is known that reflected light of the object includes the abundant target polarization information. The foggy image can be restored by these information of the target and the airlight. Therefore, this article introduces a multi-channel polarization information system and defogging algorithm accordingly. The polarization information system provides a necessary solution for the accurate application of a specific algorithm, since it can ensure the accuracy of acquired image information. The key point of the proposed algorithm lies in accurately estimating the parameters in the polarization defogging model. Based on the normal threshold distribution comparison, it can avoid the highlight portion of the non-sky area in the image and accurately estimate the airlight intensity at infinite distance so as to effectively reduce the color distortion of the bright area. The median filtering algorithm is used to obtain the airlight degree of polarization by using three obtained polarization scenes. At last, this article analyzes the experimental results through defogging evaluation indexes and compared the result obtained by this algorithm with others.

Abstract:We propose a polarized image defogging algorithm according to the sky segmentation results and transmission map optimization. Firstly, we propose a joint sky segmentation method based on scene polarization information, gradient information and light intensity information. This method can effectively segment the sky region and accurately estimate the global parameters such as atmospheric polarization degree and atmospheric light intensity at infinite distance. Then, the Gaussian filter is used to solve the light intensity map of the target, and the information of the polarization degree of the target is solved. Finally, based on the segmented sky region, a three-step transmission optimization method is proposed, which can effectively suppress the halo effect in the reconstructed image of large area sky region. Experimental results shows that defogging has a big improvement in the average gradient of the image and the grayscale standard deviation. Therefore, the proposed algorithm provides strong defogging and can improve the optical imaging quality in foggy scenes by restoring fog-free images.

Abstract:To solve the quality degradation problem of fog polarization imaging, an improved defogging method was proposed based on physical model of atmospheric scattering and dark passage principle of polarization images. Firstly, based on atmospheric scattering model, fog polarization imaging mechanism was analyzed and effect of atmospheric polarization on defogging was explained. Secondly, based on edge detection operator and closing operation, sky region of fog polarization image was obtained, and light intensity of infinity atmospheric and degree of polarization of atmospheric were estimated. At last, to solve the existing factors in the image such as noise interference, radiation intensity information of the degraded image was restored by modifying the degree of polarization and light intensity distribution of atmospheric. After theoretical analysis and experimental verification, good results of foggy image restoration were achieved. The results show that the algorithm can accurately obtain the sky region and improve the contrast and sharpness of the image, and improve the degradation of the image. Therefore, the algorithm can effectively inhibit the degradation of the image caused by fog, and improved target detection and identification capability of remote sensing.

Abstract:Considering the advancement in marine research in recent years, studies on the identification of offshore scenery are becoming popular globally. In this study, multiband polarimetric imaging is presented to address the deficiencies of the previous single-band study. Polarization imaging experiments of sea fog and non-sea fog in an indoor simulated environment are carried out and compared and analyzed by establishing an artificial simulation system to characterize the sea fog concentration by optical thickness with different concentrations of sea fog environment as the medium. The polarization information of each waveband converted by Stokes parametric is then brought into the two-dimensional discrete wavelet algorithm for image fusion processing. The findings indicate that when the optical thickness of sea fog increases, the polarized light in the chaotic medium recedes and the effect of the image blurs. Finally, after the image fusion process, the contrast of the image is improved and the detail of the target contour is obvious, which proves that the method has good robustness under the low signal-to-noise ratio of the sea fog environment. This provides a solid platform for targeted surveys and civic operations under dense marine fog conditions.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction and scene depth estimation from 2-dimensional (2D) images are major tasks in computer vision. However, using conventional 3D reconstruction techniques gets challenging in participating media such as murky water, fog, or smoke. We have developed a method that uses a time-of-flight (ToF) camera to estimate an object region and depth in participating media simultaneously. The scattering component is saturated, so it does not depend on the scene depth, and received signals bouncing off distant points are negligible due to light attenuation in the participating media, so the observation of such a point contains only a scattering component. These phenomena enable us to estimate the scattering component in an object region from a background that only contains the scattering component. The problem is formulated as robust estimation where the object region is regarded as outliers, and it enables the simultaneous estimation of an object region and depth on the basis of an iteratively reweighted least squares (IRLS) optimization scheme. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method using captured images from a Kinect v2 in real foggy scenes and evaluate the applicability with synthesized data.

Abstract:With the rapid advancement of video and image processing technologies in the Internet of Things, it is urgent to address the issues in real-time performance, clarity, and reliability of image recognition technology for a monitoring system in foggy weather conditions. In this work, a fast defogging image recognition algorithm is proposed based on bilateral hybrid filtering. First, the mathematical model based on bilateral hybrid filtering is established. The dark channel is used for filtering and denoising the defogging image. Next, a bilateral hybrid filtering method is proposed by using a combination of guided filtering and median filtering, as it can effectively improve the robustness and transmittance of defogging images. On this basis, the proposed algorithm dramatically decreases the computation complexity of defogging image recognition and reduces the image execution time. Experimental results show that the defogging effect and speed are promising, with the image recognition rate reaching to 98.8% after defogging.

Abstract:Most of the state-of-the-art defogging models presented in the literature assume that the attenuation coefficient of all spectral channels is constant, which inevitably leads to spectral distortion and information bias. To address this issue, this paper proposes a defogging method that takes into account the difference between the extinction coefficients of multispectral channels of light traveling through fog. Then the spatially distributed transmission map of each spectral channel is reconstructed to restore the fog-degraded images. The experimental results of various realistic complex scenes show that the proposed method has more outstanding advantages in restoring lost detail, compensating for degraded spectral information, and recognizing more targets hidden in uniform ground fog than state-of-the-art technologies. In addition, this work provides a method to characterize the intrinsic property of fog expressed as multispectral relative extinction coefficients, which act as a fundament for further reconstruction of multispectral information.

Abstract:Computer vision is increasingly used in areas such as unmanned vehicles, surveillance systems and remote sensing. However, in foggy scenarios, image degradation leads to loss of target details, which seriously affects the accuracy and effectiveness of these vision tasks. Polarized light, due to the fact that its electromagnetic waves vibrate in a specific direction, is able to resist scattering and refraction effects in complex media more effectively compared to unpolarized light. As a result, polarized light has a greater ability to maintain its polarization characteristics in complex transmission media and under long-distance imaging conditions. This property makes polarized imaging especially suitable for complex scenes such as outdoor and underwater, especially in foggy environments, where higher quality images can be obtained. Based on this advantage, we propose an innovative semi-physical polarization dehazing method that does not rely on an external light source. The method simulates the diffusion process of fog and designs a diffusion kernel that corresponds to the image blurriness caused by this diffusion. By employing spatiotemporal Fourier transforms and deconvolution operations, the method recovers the state of fog droplets prior to diffusion and the light inversion distribution of objects. This approach effectively achieves dehazing and detail enhancement of the scene.

Abstract:In hazy weather,the image quality is decreased owing to the scattering effect of atmospheric particles on light,which can affect target detection and key information extraction.In response to the shortcomings of current polarization defogging algorithms,this study proposes a defogging method based on polarization dark channel.First,polarization information is calculated through the polarized light inten-sity of four different angles,to obtain the polarized light intensity of any angle.Thereafter,based on the dark channel prior principle,the dark channel of the polarized image is defined.The atmospheric light in-tensity at infinity is obtained,and the atmospheric transmission rate is calculated.Finally,the atmospheric scattering model is constructed to obtain a defogging image.The experimental results demonstrate that the evaluation indicators of grayscale variance,average gradient,and image entropy of the defogged image processed by this method are significantly improved compared to those of the original image.The gray-scale variance,average gradient,and image entropy are increased by 25%,30%,and 5%,respectively.This method can effectively improve the quality and clarity of images in hazy weather and enrich image de-tails.

Abstract:The atmosphere contains many tiny, suspended particles, and due to the scattering and absorption of these particles, images can show reduced visibility, distorted colors’, blurred details and other situations. Many computer vision applications are unable to accept these degraded images and therefore require high quality input images to ensure accurate work, provided by a defogging method. Single image deblurring utilizes physical models where transmission estimation is an important parameter in obtaining a fog-free image. The fog image is analyzed and pre-processed to highlight details and make it more suitable for human and machine recognition. The analysis of different deblurring methods divides them mainly into methods based on image a priori recovery, image enhancement and deep learning. The content of defogging-related algorithms is described, and future directions are analyzed.

Abstract:In the foggy environment, the images collected outdoors are prone to problems, such as low contrast and loss of details. In order to solve this problem, this paper proposes an algorithm based on multiscale parallel-depth separable convolutional neural network (MSP-DSCNN) to remove fog from foggy images and improve image quality. The multiscale feature extraction module extracts texture feature details from fog images at different scales and extracts high-dimensional and low-dimensional features from fog images by using parallel depth and shallow channels. In order to further optimize the network model, a split convolution method is proposed, which can split the feature graph into two categories, one is the main feature and the other is the secondary feature. The key information is extracted from the main features with high complexity, and the compensation information is extracted from the minor features with low complexity. Experiments show that compared with other algorithms, the model constructed in this paper has obvious advantages in defogging effect, natural color of restored images, good detail retention, and dominant indicators. It effectively solves the problems of incomplete haze, color offset, and poor visibility of detail maintenance in the current image.

Abstract:Remote sensing images have been widely used in military, national defense, disaster emergency response, ecological environment monitoring, among other applications. However, fog always causes definition of remote sensing images to decrease. The performance of traditional image defogging methods relies on the fog-related prior knowledge, but they cannot always accurately obtain the scene depth information used in the defogging process. Existing deep learning-based image defogging methods often perform well, but they mainly focus on defogging ordinary outdoor foggy images rather than remote sensing images. Due to the different imaging mechanisms used in ordinary outdoor images and remote sensing images, fog residue may exist in the defogged remote sensing images obtained by existing deep learning-based image defogging methods. Therefore, this paper proposes remote sensing image defogging networks based on dual self-attention boost residual octave convolution (DOC). Residual octave convolution (residual OctConv) is used to decompose a source image into high- and low-frequency components. During the extraction of feature maps, high- and low-frequency components are processed by convolution operations, respectively. The entire network structure is mainly composed of encoding and decoding stages. The feature maps of each network layer in the encoding stage are passed to the corresponding network layer in the decoding stage. The dual self-attention module is applied to the feature enhancement of the output feature maps of the encoding stage, thereby obtaining the refined feature maps. The strengthen-operate-subtract (SOS) boosted module is used to fuse the refined feature maps of each network layer with the upsampling feature maps from the corresponding decoding stage. Compared with existing image defogging methods, comparative experimental results confirm the proposed method improves both visual effects and objective indicators to varying degrees and effectively enhances the definition of foggy remote sensing images.

Abstract:Towards better imaging through fog for vehicles, we developed an off-axis spatiotemporally gated multimode laser scanning imaging system. Utilizing fog mimicking liquid suspension, we tested the imaging system with different levels of scattering. The experimental results suggest that the system can yield high quality images at seven scattering path lengths, which far exceeds the capability of conventional imaging systems. We also found that the multimode detection can not only make the system robust in the presence of aberration but also help to reduce the speckles in images for the case of coherent illumination.

Abstract:To solve the problem that traditional dark channel is not suitable for a large sky area and can easyily distort defogged images, we propose a novel fusion-based defogging algorithm. Firstly, an improved remote sensing image segmentation algorithm is introduced to mix the dark channel. Secondly, we establish a dark-light channel fusion model to calculate the atmospheric light map. Furthermore, in order to refine the transmittance image without reducing restoration quality, the grayscale image corresponding to the original image is selected as a guide image. Meanwhile, we optimize the set value of the defogging intensity parameter ω in the transmission estimation formula as the value of atmospheric light. Finally, a brightness/color compensation model based on visual perception is generated for image correction. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm achieves superior performance on UAV foggy images in both subjective and objective evaluation, which verifies the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:Aiming at the problem that the dark channel prior algorithm is not ideal in removing fog at the distant view and the sudden change of depth, this paper proposes an adaptive bright and dark channel combined with defogging algorithm based on the depth of field. The algorithm divides the image into a distant area and a near area based on the depth of field. The near area uses the dark channel to remove the fog, and the distant area uses the bright channel to remove the fog, combined with the use of adaptive superpixel segmentation to give the content-based local area division and defogging control factor based on depth of field. It better solves the problem of large transmittance deviation and defogging distortion under content changes and sudden depth of field changes. From the subjective and objective indicators, the algorithm in this paper has achieved a good defogging effect, and the main indicators and comprehensive defogging quality are better than common algorithms.

Abstract:Active laser imaging utilizes time-of-flight and echo intensity measurements to generate distance and intensity images of targets. However, scattering caused by cloud and fog particles, leads to imaging quality deterioration. In this study, we introduce a novel approach for improving imaging clarity in these environments. We employed a matched filtering method that leverages the distinction between signal and noise in the time domain to preliminarily extract the signal from one-dimensional photon-counting echo data. We further denoised the data by utilizing the Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network in extracting features from extended time-series data. The proposed method displayed notable improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), from 7.227 dB to 31.35 dB, following an analysis of experimental data collected under cloud and fog conditions. Furthermore, processing positively affected the quality of the distance image with an increase in the structural similarity (SSIM) index from 0.7883 to 0.9070. Additionally, the point-cloud images were successfully restored. These findings suggest that the integration of matched filtering and the LSTM algorithm effectively enhances beam imaging quality in the presence of cloud and fog scattering. This method has potential application in various fields, including navigation, remote sensing, and other areas susceptible to complex environmental conditions.

Abstract:Due to the detrimental impact of fog on image quality, dehazing maritime images is essential for applications such as safe maritime navigation, surveillance, environmental monitoring, and marine research. Traditional dehazing techniques, which are dependent on presupposed conditions, often fail to perform effectively, particularly when processing sky regions within marine fog images in which these conditions are not met. This study proposes an adaptive sky area segmentation dark channel prior to the marine image dehazing method. This study effectively addresses challenges associated with traditional marine image dehazing methods, improving dehazing results affected by bright targets in the sky area and mitigating the grayish appearance caused by the dark channel. This study uses the grayscale value of the region boundary's grayscale discontinuity characteristics, takes the grayscale value with the least number of discontinuity areas in the grayscale histogram as a segmentation threshold adapted to the characteristics of the sea fog image to segment bright areas such as the sky, and then uses grayscale gradients to identify grayscale differences in different bright areas, accurately distinguishing boundaries between sky and non-sky areas. By comparing the area parameters, non-sky blocks are filled; this adaptively eliminates interference from other bright non-sky areas and accurately locks the sky area. Furthermore, this study proposes an enhanced dark channel prior approach that optimizes transmittance locally within sky areas and globally across the image. This is achieved using a transmittance optimization algorithm combined with guided filtering technology. The atmospheric light estimation is refined through iterative adjustments, ensuring consistency in brightness between the dehazed and original images. The image reconstruction employs calculated atmospheric light and transmittance values through an atmospheric scattering model. Finally, the use of gamma-correction technology ensures that images more accurately replicate natural colors and brightness levels. Experimental outcomes demonstrate substantial improvements in the contrast, color saturation, and visual clarity of marine fog images. Additionally, a set of foggy marine image data sets is developed for monitoring purposes. Compared with traditional dark channel prior dehazing techniques, this new approach significantly improves fog removal. This advancement enhances the clarity of images obtained from maritime equipment and effectively mitigates the risk of maritime transportation accidents.

Abstract:The invention provides a single image defogging method based on deep learning. The method comprises: acquiring a data set of indoor and outdoor synthetic fog and real fog, the data set comprising: a training set, a test set and a verification set; constructing an end-to-end based on a Residual Network (end-to-end) a deep convolutional neural network, inputting the training set and the verificationset into the deep convolutional neural network and training the model, reaching the maximum number of iterations and ending the training, acquiring the deep convolutional neural network in this time;using the test set to test the defogging effect of the deep convolutional neural network and the optimal model; using the deep convolutional neural network and the optimal model to perform the dehazing treatment on the fogged image of the defogging so that a no-fog image is obtained. The method of the invention realizes end-to-end recovery image clearing and visualization for different concentrations of synthetic fog maps and outdoor real fog maps, and has good defogging effect and practical application value.

Abstract:The images captured under adverse weather conditions suffer from poor visibility and contrast problems. Such images are not suitable for computer vision analysis and similar applications. Therefore, image defogging/dehazing is one of the most intriguing topics. In this paper, a new, fast, and robust defogging/de-hazing algorithm is proposed by combining the Retinex theory with independent component analysis, which performs better than existing algorithms. Initially, the foggy image is decomposed into two components: reflectance and luminance. The former is computed using the Retinex theory, while the latter is obtained by decomposing the foggy image into parallel and perpendicular components of air-light. Finally, the defogged image is obtained by applying Koschmieder's law. Simulation results demonstrate the absence of halo effects and the presence of high-resolution images. The simulation results also confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method when compared to other conventional techniques in terms of NIQE, FADE, SSIM, PSNR, AG, CIEDE2000, r̄ , and implementation time.
