Abstract:Based on the extended Huygens–Fresnel diffraction integral, the expressions for the average intensity and the effective size of Laguerre–Gaussian and Bessel–Gaussian Schell-model beams propagating through a paraxial ABCD optical system are obtained in the turbulent atmosphere. The influences of the source coherence and atmospheric turbulence on the propagation of Laguerre–Gaussian and Bessel–Gaussian Schell-model beams in the turbulent atmosphere are investigated in detail. It is found that the beam profile will eventually evolve into a Gaussian-like distribution through turbulence in contrast to ring-shaped far-field pattern in free space. The effective size of Laguerre–Gaussian and Bessel–Gaussian Schell-model beams with lower source coherence is less affected by turbulence. The parameter β and index n of the sources have some effects on intensity distribution and beam spreading through atmospheric turbulence.

Abstract:The propagation behavior of the multi-Gaussian Schell-model source through ABCD optical systems and its spreading in the turbulent atmosphere are investigated. We obtain the analytic expressions for the cross spectral density and spectral degree of coherence of such beams in misaligned ABCD optical systems and beam width in atmospheric turbulence. Numerical results show that when the beam is focused, it still has the flattened intensity profile around the optical axis. However, the degree of coherence of field in the focal plane assumes Gaussian-like profile. The turbulence inner scale and correlation width and index M of the source have some effects on beam spreading through atmospheric turbulence.

Abstract:The performance of partially coherent free-space optical links is investigated in the moderate to strong fluctuation regime of non-Kolmogorov turbulence. The expressions for large-and small-scale log-irradiance flux variance are obtained in non-Kolmogorov turbulence. By employing the gamma-gamma distribution of irradiance fluctuations, the effects of spatial coherence of the source, index of non-Kolmogorov spectrum, and size of the receiver on channel capacity for horizontal links are discussed. Results show that channel capacity presents fluctuating behaviors with the variation of alpha for longer links and increases for alpha values higher than 11/3. (C) 2011 Optical Society of America

Abstract:The propagation of a higher-order cosh-Gaussian beam through a paraxial and real ABCD optical system in turbulent atmosphere has been investigated. The analytical expressions for the average intensity, the effective beam size, and the kurtosis parameter of a higher-order cosh-Gaussian beam through a paraxial and real ABCD optical system are derived in turbulent atmosphere. The average intensity distribution and the spreading properties of a higher-order cosh-Gaussian in turbulent atmosphere are numerically demonstrated. The influences of the beam parameters and the structure constant of the atmospheric turbulence on the propagation of a higher-order cosh-Gaussian beam in turbulent atmosphere are also examined in detail.

Abstract:In this work, the well-known Ince–Gaussian beams (IGBs) are reproduced by expanding them in the Laguerre Gaussian basis. The established formula will derive the analytical expression of the average intensity of the IGBs propagating through the turbulent atmosphere by using the extended Huygens–Fresnel diffraction integral in the framework of Rytov theory. This work is concerned with finding a closed-form expression for the average intensity of IGBs propagating through weak and strong Kolmogorov turbulence and completes other scientific research works that deal with numerical approach. The numerical simulations of the analytical average intensity at the receiver plane and the effective beam spot size of the IGBs propagating through turbulent atmosphere environment are presented in this paper. The influences of the beam profile parameters and the turbulence strength on the evolution of the diffracted beam are investigated and discussed. The present results can be a useful tool to predict the behavior of IGBs for the applications in turbulent atmosphere.

Abstract:When an optical beam propagates through a turbulent medium such as the atmosphere or ocean, the beam will become distorted. It is then natural to seek the best or optimal beam that is distorted least, under some metric such as intensity or scintillation. We seek to maximize the light intensity at the receiver using the paraxial wave equation with weak-fluctuation as the model. In contrast to classical results that typically confine original laser beams to be from a special class, we allow the beam to be general, which leads to an eigenvalue problem of a large-sized matrix with each entry being a multi-dimensional integral. This is an expensive and sometimes infeasible computational task in many practically reasonable settings. To overcome this expense, in a change from past calculations of optimal beams, we transform the calculation from physical space to Fourier space. Since the structure of the turbulence is commonly described in Fourier space, the computational cost is significantly reduced. This also allows us to incorporate some optional turbulence assumptions, such as homogeneous-statistics assumption, small-length-scale cutoff assumption, and Markov assumption, to further reduce the dimension of the numerical integral. The proposed methods provide a computational strategy that is numerically feasible, and results are demonstrated in several numerical examples. These results provide further evidence that special beams can be defined to have beam divergence that is small.

Computation of beam propagation in turbulent field

Abstract:The split-step Fourier method (SSFM) is introduced to analyze the beam propagation in a relatively large-sized turbulent filed, whose refractive-index profile is already detected. The numerical method is achieved by fast Fourier transform (FFT). To obtain the optimal sampling number, we propose an adaptive spread-spectrum method as an optimization. The SSFM is widely used for solving the nonlinear Schrodinger equation ([1]). The advantage of the SSFM is apparently its simple formalism and suitability to our situation. The direct numerical solution of the Helmholtz equation, derived from this method, yields detailed information of the spatial and angular properties of the propagation beam. On the other hand, a set of approximations restrict its applicability, the requirements for the accurate application of the method are summarized and a set of formulas is generalized in this paper. The efficiency of the SSFM depends on the sampling number, the adaptive spread-spectrum method yields optimal sampling number to increase the computational efficiency. To testify the accuracy of our algorithm, we use graded-index medium as the turbulent filed, for the reason that the beam propagation in turbulent field with random refractive-index profile is ruleless and has no unified reference. The simulation result testifies our algorithm is tremendously accurate, capable of selecting the optimal N automatically and much more computationally efficient than the original algorithm.

Abstract:The scintillation index of pseudo-Bessel-Gaussian Schell-mode (PBGSM) beams propagating through atmospheric turbulence is analyzed with the help of wave optics simulation due to the analytic difficulties. It is found that in the strong fluctuation regime, the PBGSM beams are more resistant to the turbulence with the appropriate parameters beta and b. However, the case is contrary in the weak fluctuation regime. Our simulation results indicate that the PBGSM beams may be applied to free-space optical (FSO) communication systems only when the turbulence is strong or the propagation distance is long. Abstract:An analytical formula for the average intensity of an elliptical Gaussian beam (EGB) propagating in a turbulent atmosphere is derived. The spreading properties of an EGB in a turbulent atmosphere are studied. It is found that an EGB will eventually become a circular Gaussian beam in a turbulent atmosphere. This interesting phenomenon is quite different from the propagation of an EGB in free space. The evolution properties are closely related to the parameters of the beam and the turbulent atmosphere.

Abstract:We present the expression of a partially coherent sine beam and derive the propagation equations of such a beam in non-Kolmogorov turbulence. The intensity profiles of the beam in non-Kolmogorov turbulence are simulated and analyzed. The obtained results show that the sinusoidal array profile is destroyed by non-Kolmogorov turbulence and beam parameters during the propagation, and the intensity profile of such a beam becomes a sheet, when a and b are set. The array profile properties of partially coherent sine beams introduced here display new properties, and these beams help free space optical communications.

Abstract:Utilizing the extended Huygens-Fresnel principle and the Rytov approximation, the analytical formula for the propagation of a partially coherent electromagnetic hyperbolic-sine-Gaussian vortex beam (PCEShVB) in anisotropic atmospheric turbulence has been theoretically derived. Detailed studies have been conducted on the evolution characteristics of average intensity, the degree of coherence (DOC) and the degree of polarization (DOP) of the beam in turbulence. The results show that during propagation, the intensity distribution of the beam will exhibit a spiral structure, and the overall distribution of light spots will rotate in a direction related to the sign of the topological charge. The DOC distribution of PCEShVB will display a pattern reminiscent of beam interference fringes with an increase in propagation distance, with the number of 'interference fringes' greatly impacted by the hyperbolic sine parameter. Furthermore, PCEShVB with large initial coherent length and hyperbolic sine parameter will increase the degree of separation of the spots and yield a large DOP. Finally, for the validation of the theoretical findings, the random phase screen method was employed to simulate the propagation of PCEShVB through anisotropic atmospheric turbulence. The studies revealed a consistent alignment between the simulation results and the theoretical predictions.

Abstract:In this paper, the coherent properties of partially coherent Bessel–Gaussian optical beams propagating through a uniform medium (free space) or a turbulent atmosphere are examined theoretically. The consideration is based on the analytical solution of the equation for the transverse second-order mutual coherence function of the field of partially coherent optical radiation in a turbulent atmosphere. For the partially coherent Bessel–Gaussian beam, the second-order mutual coherence function of the source field is taken as a Gaussian–Schell model. In this approximation, we analyze the behavior of the coherence degree and the integral coherence scale of these beams as a function of the propagation pathlength, propagation conditions, and beam parameters, such as the radius of the Gauss factor of the beam, parameter of the Bessel factor of the beam, topological charge, and correlation width of the source field of partially coherent radiation. It was found that, as a partially coherent vortex Bessel–Gaussian beam propagates through a turbulent atmosphere, there appear not two (as might be expected: one due to atmospheric turbulence and another due to the partial coherence of the source field), but only one ring dislocation of the coherence degree (due to the simultaneous effect of both these factors on the optical radiation). In addition, it is shown that the dislocation of the coherence degree that significantly affects the beam coherence level is formed only for beams, for which the coherence width of the source field is larger than the diameter of the first Fresnel zone.

Abstract:The propagation properties of a partially coherent vortex Hermite-cosine-hyperbolic-Gaussian beam (PCvHChGB) is investigated in atmospheric turbulence. The theoretical model for a PCvHChGB propagating in the turbulent atmosphere is established based on the extended Huygens–Fresnel diffraction integral and Rytov method, and the beam expression is obtained. The effects of the turbulence strength and initial beam parameters on the dynamic evolution of the PCvHChGB are analyzed numerically with comparison to the free space propagation. It is demonstrated that when the turbulence strength is higher or the input beam parameters, such as the beam order, the vortex charge, the spatial coherence length σ 0 , and the Gaussian waist width, are smaller, the central peak intensity rises more quickly. The intensity pattern change is faster as the wavelength is larger with a small decentered parameter b , inversely, when b is bigger, the opposite phenomenon happens. The obtained results could be beneficial to the PCvHChGB applications in optical communications and remote sensing systems.

Abstract:A generalized diffraction integral formula for stochastic electromagnetic beams propagating through an optical system in turbulent atmosphere is derived with the help of tensor method. Some analyses are illustrated by a numerical example relating to changes in the average intensity and the degree of polarization of an electromagnetic Gaussian Schell-model beam propagating through a double-lenses system. It is shown that the optical system has strong influence on the propagation properties of the beam. The method used in this paper can be widely applied to the propagation of astigmatic beams through an optical system in turbulent atmosphere.

Abstract:On the basis of the generalized diffraction integral formula for misaligned optical systems in the spatial domain, an analytical propagation expression for the elements of the cross-spectral density matrix of a random electromagnetic beam passing through a misaligned optical system in turbulent atmosphere is derived. Some analyses are illustrated by numerical examples relating to changes in the state of polarization of an electromagnetic Gaussian Schell-model beam propagating through such an optical system. It is shown that the misalignment has a significant influence on the intensity profile and the state of polarization of the beam, but the influence becomes smaller for the beam propagating in strong turbulent atmosphere. The method in this paper can be applied for sources that are either isotropic or anisotropic. It is shown that the isotropic sources and the anisotropic sources have different polarization properties on beam propagation.

Abstract:Based on the extended Huygens–Fresnel principle, an analytical expression for the elements of a cross-spectral matrix for electromagnetic Gaussian–Schell model (EGSM) beams in a slanted path is derived. With the help of this expression, we investigate the average intensity, the degree of polarization (DOP) and the degree of coherence (DOC) for EGSM beams in a slanted path. Results show that the far-zone DOP and DOC of EGSM beams in a slanted path are determined by the parameters of the source, which are different from the situations in a horizontal path.

Abstract:New experimental technique have been proposed to discuss the turbulence impact reduction using beam shaping technique. In first phase of experiments, turbulence Impacted Vortex beam shaping technique has been introduced for a propagating beam which is effected by Kolmogorov type lab based turbulence simulator using Pseudo Random Phase Plate (PRPP). The new technique is executed with a spatially filtered collimated Gaussian beam that is propagated through computer controlled rotating PRPP to introduce the lab based turbulence on the beam profile. The turbulence impacted beam is then propagated through Vortex Phase Plate (VPP) to shape that beam into different topological charged Laguerre Gaussian modes and further collimated using two lens based configuration. We have measured the scintillation index of the spatial intensity profile collected from CCD. Comparative studies have been done by placing the image plane in five different positions on the propagation path of the beam so that we can detect Collimated, diverging and converging outputs. Four topological charges of LG beams and Gaussian beam have been used to envisage results.

Abstract:We show that the far-field beam spreading and direction of partially coherent Gaussian-Schell model (GSM) beams are independent on the spatial coherence of the source through non-Kolmogorov atmospheric turbulence, which has potential applications in long-distance free-space optical communication. The effects of spatial coherence, exponent value alpha, and inner scale and outer scale of atmospheric turbulence on beam spreading are studied in details. The GSM beam has greater spreading for smaller inner scale or bigger outer scale through non-Kolmogorov turbulent atmosphere.

Abstract:With the help of the Rayleigh-Sommerfeld diffraction integral, an analytical formula for the spectral density of a nonparaxial polychromatic partially coherent (NPPC) standard or elegant Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beam propagating through free space is derived. The evolution properties of the intensity distribution of a NPPC standard or elegant LG beam are studied numerically. It is found that the behavior of the intensity distribution of the NPPC standard or elegant LG beam is determined by the initial beam parameters (i.e., beam waist size, spatial coherence width and beam orders). Furthermore, we also study the influence of the initial beam parameters on the spectral change of a NPPC standard or elegant LG beam upon propagation in free space. It is shown that the on-axis spectral shift of a NPPC standard LG beam is almost the same with that of a NPPC elegant LG beam when the initial beam parameters of two type beams are identical. However, the difference between the off-axis spectral shift between a NPPC standard LG beam and a NPPC elegant LG beam is enhanced with the decrease of beam waist size or with the increase of spatial coherence width and beam mode orders.
