Abstract:Simultaneous two-species imaging using single-shot planar laser-induced fluorescence have been performed to record high quality image pairs of CH/OH, CH/CH2O and OH/CH2O to visualize the flame front structures in swirl-stabilized lean premixed methane/air flames. The results show that the investigated flames exhibit various flame front structures distinctly in space, which covers: (1) the corrugated flamelet at the leading front; (2) the thin reaction-zone layer with distorted preheat zone in the shear-layer downstream; and (3) quenching, re-ignition and distributed reactions further downstream. The large variation of the flame characteristics in space stems from the entrainment of ambient cold air to the flame that results in flame quenching at the trailing edge of the flame. Thereafter, the unburned fuel/air mixture in the downstream region mixes with the entrained air and the hot combustion products from the upstream leading flame front, leading to reignition with distributed reactions. The current results provide a direct experimental evidence that distributed reactions can be a common combustion mode along with the results (Ref. [1], Zhou et al., 2015) recently reported in the highly turbulent premixed jet flames.

Abstract:The imaging-based three-color method is widely used in the field of non-contact temperature measurement of combustion flames. In this paper, by analyzing the imaging process of a combustion flame in detail, we re-derivate the three-color method by adopting a theory of high dynamic range imaging. Instead of using white balanced, gamma calibrated or other algorithms applied 8-bit pixel values, we use irradiance values on the image plane; these values are obtained by combining two differently exposed raw images into one high dynamic range irradiance map with the help of the imaging system's response function. An instrumentation system is presented and a series of experiments have been carried out, the results of which are satisfactory.

Abstract:A nonintrusive measurement technique is presented numerically for simultaneous measurement of three-dimensional (3D) soot temperature and volume fraction fields in the axisymmetric or asymmetric flames with charge-coupled device (CCD) cameras. CCD cameras were introduced to capture the flame images for obtaining the line-of-sight radiation intensities. The distributions of local emission source under two wavelengths can be deduced through solving the reconstruction matrix equation by the least-square QR decomposition method from the knowledge of the line-of-sight radiation intensities of the flames. The two-color distributions of the local emission source were used to retrieve the soot temperature and volume fraction distributions. The effects of the discrete ray number of CCD cameras, the number of CCD cameras, and the system signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) on the measurement were investigated. The results show that for accurate measurement of soot volume fraction field, the CCD cameras number should not be less than four and the system SNR can be as low as 54 dB. The proposed technique can be capable for reconstructing the 3D soot temperature and volume fraction fields in both axisymmetric and asymmetric flames well.

Abstract:Instantaneous measurement of flame spatial structure has been long desired for complicated combustion condition (gas turbine, ramjet et.). Three dimensional computed tomography of chemiluminescence (3D-CTC) is a potential testing technology for its simplicity, low cost, high temporal and spatial resolution. In most former studies, multi-lens and multi-CCD are used to capture projects from different view angles. In order to improve adaptability, only one CCD was utilized to build 3D-CTC system combined with customized fiber-based endoscopes (FBEs). It makes this technique more economic and simple. Validate experiments were made using 10 small CH4 diffusion flame arranging in a ring structure. Based on one instantaneous image, computed tomography can be conducted using Algebraic Reconstruction Technique (ART) algorithm. The reconstructed results, including the flame number, ring shape of the flames, the inner and outer diameter of ring, all well match the physical structure. It indicates that 3D combustion chemiluminescence could be well reconstructed using single camera.

Abstract:A new method is proposed for simultaneous reconstruction of three-dimensional particle temperature, particle concentration, and H2O concentration distributions of axisymmetric flames using multi-spectral flame images. The multi-spectral flame images are obtained by cameras, each of which is equipped with one of three filters whose center wavelength is 700 nm, 900 nm, and 950 nm. The absorption of H2O is considered to be represented solely by the monochromatic image obtained at a wavelength of 950 nm, whereas the thermal radiation of particles is assumed to be represented by all three monochromatic flame images. For a signal-to-noise ratio value greater than 70 dB, the temperature and concentration distributions were reconstructed accurately. The experiment results indicate the particle temperature, particle concentration, and H2O concentration are low in the inner cone of the flame and they are high in the outer cone of the flame. The maximum difference between the temperature calculated from the flame images and the temperature measured by the thermocouple is 5%.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) quantitative measurements of reacting multiphase micro-objects are of great interest in fuel particle combustion, which is composed of an inner fuel particle and an outer gas flame. Three models of digital inline holography of this composite fuel particle in the framework of light scattering and diffraction theories have been proposed, and then verified with reported experimental observations. Results show that the dispersed fuel particle and the gas flame distinguish in the reconstructed amplitude and phase contrast images, and reveal that the low extinction efficiency and phase shifting of the highly transparent, weakly scattering gas flame accounts for the difference. Abstract:A multi-spectral imaging system is proposed to reconstruct the soot temperature and volume fraction fields of a laboratory-scale ethylene flame. The Charge-coupled device (CCD) cameras with Liquid Crystal Tunable Filters (LCTF) were applied to capture the multispectral flame images for obtaining monochromatic radiative intensities. The LCTFs provide images of the flame at multiple wavelengths and generate high-resolution spectra at every pixel. A least square QR decomposition (LSQR) method is applied to solve the large ill-posed equations and obtain the multi-wavelength local emission distributions from which temperature and volume fraction profiles can be extracted. Before conducting the experimental measurement, the calibration method of the multi-spectral imaging system is introduced, and the calibration results with 6 different wavelengths are demonstrated. The measured region of the flame is divided into 7×7×3 volume elements, and specifically it is dispersed to 3 layers in the vertical direction. Considering the measured distribution profiles, the experimental reconstruction results are determined to be reasonable.

Abstract:Flames can be formed by burning methane (CH4). When oxygen is scarce, carbon particles nucleate into solid particles called soot. These particles emit photons, making the flame yellow. Later, methane is pre-mixed with air forming a blue flame; burning more efficiently, providing less soot and light. Imaging flames and knowing their temperature are vital to maximizing efficiency and validating numerical models. Most temperature probes disrupt the flame and create differences leading to an inaccurate measurement of the flame temperature. We seek to image the flame in three dimensions using synthetic aperture imaging. This technique has already successfully measured velocity fields of a vortex ring [1]. Synthetic aperture imaging is a technique that views one scene from multiple cameras set at different angles, allowing some cameras to view objects that are obscured by others. As the resulting images are overlapped different depths of the scene come into and out of focus, known as focal planes, similar to tomography. These focal planes can be used to extract three-dimensional information about the scene. This procedure was used to extract the outer edge of a oxygen-starved methane flame (yellow) from which the three-dimensional flame was reconstructed. When the reconstructed image was compared to the raw image from the central camera the two shapes corresponded well. This experiment in the fluid dynamics video (entry #: V041) demonstrated that a three-dimensional flame can be reconstructed by combining images from multiple cameras using synthetic aperture imaging.

Abstract:Axisymmetric flames are widely used in research on flame combustion mechanisms and mass and heat transfer because of their simple structure and applicability to complex reactions and transfer calculations. A new optical diagnostic method named light field camera has been validated as applicable for online detection of the temperature field of an axisymmetric flame. Reconstruction algorithms can be used to estimate the distribution of the flame temperature from the light field images and validated by setting a known distribution of temperature and radiative properties. In the present study, a model of meshed axisymmetric flame light field imaging was put forward. The complicated distribution of temperature and radiative properties were considered in the model after validation using two absorption coefficients arranged at different region. An axisymmetric laminar coflow diffusion ethylene flame was modeled to generate input data. Then, the Lucy–Richardson and nearest neighbor filtering deconvolution algorithms were applied to the refocused light field images for sectional reconstruction of the temperature field. Under the condition of high temperature and soot generated from ethylene flame, the obtained reconstructed temperature was comparable to the input temperature from 1400 K to 2000 K, within the detectable radiative intensity range of the light field camera.

Abstract:Charge-coupled device (CCD) cameras with liquid crystal tunable filters (LCTF) were introduced to capture the multispectral flame images for obtaining the line-of-sight radiation intensities. A least square QR decomposition method was applied to solve the reconstruction matrix equation and obtain the multi wavelength local emission distributions from which temperature and volume fraction profiles can be retrieved. Compared with the original two-color method, the use of a wide range of spectral data was proved to be capable of reducing the reconstruction error. Reconstruction results of the two methods with different signal to noise ratio (SNR) were discussed. The effect of selected wavelength number is analyzed and the best number is determined to be in the range of 6-11. The proposed multispectral imaging system was verified to be feasible for the reconstruction of temperature and soot volume fraction distributions according to the experimental measurement results. Abstract:An inverse radiation analysis using soot emission measured by a high-speed stereoscopic imaging system is described for simultaneous estimation of the 3-D soot temperature and volume fraction distributions in unsteady sooty flames. A new iterative reconstruction method taking self attenuation into account is developed based on the least squares minimum-residual algorithm. Numerical assessment and experimental measurement results of an ethylene/air diffusive flame show that the proposed method is efficient and capable of reconstructing the soot temperature and volume fraction distributions in unsteady flames. Abstract:The flame temperature and soot volume fraction are important parameters for combustion diagnosis, which reflect the combustion reaction process and play a significant role in controlling pollutants emissions. This research introduces a direct method based on Weighted Non-Negative Least Squares (WNNLS) and light field imaging techniques to recover the flame temperature and soot volume fraction simultaneously. This method considers the flame self-absorption effect. Numerical studies were conducted on both Non-Negative Least Squares and proposed algorithms to compare the reconstruction performance. The anti-noise ability of the proposed reconstruction method was also investigated by adding various noises to radiative intensity. The effectiveness of the proposed method was also further verified by experimental studies on bimodal ethylene-diffusion flames. Thermocouple measurements were conducted and compared with the reconstructed temperatures. Both the numerical and experimental studies manifest that the proposed direct reconstruction method combing with WNNLS and light field imaging techniques is effective and accurate.

Abstract:An original technique is presented for noncontact three-dimensional temperature,particle concentration and water vapor concentration field measurement in steady flame using radiative information captured by four cameras.The multi-spectral flame images are obtained by cameras which are equipped with three filters whose center wavelengths are 0.436,μm(blue),0.700,μm(red)and 1.87,μm(water absorption peak),respectively.An inverse problem model is built to calculate the radiative transfer equation under three wavelengths.The particle absorption coefficient and the water vapor absorption coefficient are separated through water by wavelength selective absorp-tion.The statistical narrow band(SNB)model is introduced to obtain gas concentration,and the particle concentra-tion is calculated by Mie theory.Two numerical simulation cases are adopted to validate the technique.It is found that temperature reconstruction is the best,followed by particle concentration reconstruction and then water concentration reconstruction.When the particle concentration is below 1×10-6,the water concentration could be reconstructed successfully.The length error of radiation route should be below 1%, for the accurate water concentration reconstruc-tion.

Abstract:Due to the complex optical properties of sooting flames, the accuracy of flame emission-based measurement techniques depends on an appropriate self-absorption correction strategy. Thus, this paper presents a novel iterative procedure to retrieve the soot temperature and volume fraction of sooting flames along with a self-absorption correction strategy through hyperspectral imaging. Numerical simulations were carried out on suppositional flames to investigate the performance of the proposed technique. Relative errors obtained from the simulations are below 1.5%, indicating a better accuracy can be achieved by the proposed reconstruction technique. A hybrid camera hyperspectral video imaging technique is designed and implemented with the concept of compressed sensing. A significant improvement in flame spectrum acquisition has been observed. Experiments were carried out under ethylene-air diffusion flames to validate the technique. The reconstructed flame soot temperature and volume fraction distributions demonstrated that the proposed hyperspectral video imaging technique improves the soot temperature and volume fraction reconstruction accuracy.

Abstract:Analysis of spatial temperature and gas concentration distributions is of great importance for combustion research. Algebraic reconstruction technique (ART) and adaptive algebraic reconstruction technique (AART) based on tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy are both widely used methods for temperature tomographic imaging in a flame. After being obtained the temperature tomography through iterative method, the gas concentration reconstruction could be determined from a simple division equation (direct gas concentration algorithm) or iterative algorithm (ART gas concentration algorithm or AART gas concentration algorithm) for the second time. For the latter, iterative algorithm was used twice through the whole process. A series of numerical simulations were carried out by three gas concentration reconstruction methods mentioned above. The results demonstrated that AART method had better robustness for different phantoms and stability in the case that measured projections contained different levels of noise. Experimental measurements in a flat methane/air flame on a McKenna burner under three different equivalence ratios (1.0, 0.9, and 0.8) were conducted using AART gas concentration algorithm. The reconstructed results coincide well with those results obtained by thermocouple and theoretical calculation. Both simulation and experiment demonstrate that the AART gas concentration algorithm would be reliable and suitable for simultaneous temperature and H2O concentration tomographic imaging during combustion. Abstract:As common natural disasters, fire incidents seriously threaten human life and property. Flame target localization is a key step to enabling timely detection and effective control of the fire incident. In this study, a novel approach that combines visible-light and near-infrared cameras in a heterogeneous binocular camera system is proposed. High-precision localization of early small-scale fire targets is achieved through calibration of the heterogeneous binocular camera, stereo rectification, heterogeneous disparity matching, and depth computation. Experimental tests were conducted within a range of 1–5 meters, validating the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Abstract:In this communication, we propose a simplified laser diagnostic approach to simultaneously visualize three key scalars (i.e., NH 3 , NH, and Rayleigh scattering signals) in turbulent premixed NH 3 /H 2 /air flames using a single Nd: YAG-pumped-dye-laser system for the first time. It is proposed that two-photon laser-induced fluorescence (LIF) of NH 3 , as well as single-photon LIF of NH, can be co-excited at 304.79 nm, providing an excellent signal-to-noise ratio for both scalars. Rayleigh scattering measurements were performed at the same wavelength, taking the advantage of the higher Rayleigh cross-section at shorter wavelength. The development of such diagnostic strategy eases the complexities in optical arrangement, synchronization, and flat-field corrections, and more importantly makes multi-scalar measurements affordable to be coupled with other diagnostic techniques such as particle imaging velocimetry (PIV) and/or OH-/NO-PLIF, which would provide critical information for the studies of NH 3 /H 2 turbulent combustion.

Abstract:Quantitative measurement of chemiluminescence is a challenging work that limits the development of combustion diagnostics based on chemiluminescence. Here, we present a feasible method to obtain effective quantitative chemiluminescence data with an integrating sphere uniform light source. Spatial distribution images of OH* and CH* radiation from methane laminar diffusion flames were acquired using intensified charge-coupled device (CCD) cameras coupled with multiple lenses and narrow-band-pass filters. After the process of eliminating background emissions by three filters and the Abel inverse transformation, the chemiluminescence intensity was converted to a radiating rate based on the uniform light source. The simulated distributions of OH* and CH* agree well with the experimental results. It has also been found that the distribution of OH* is more extensive and closer to the flame front than that of CH*, demonstrating that OH* is more representative of the flame structure. Based on the change in the reaction rate of different formation reactions, OH* distributions can be divided into three regions: intense section near the nozzle, transition section in the middle of the flame, and secondary section downstream the flame, whereas CH* only exists in the first two regions. In addition, as the velocity ratio of methane and co-flowing air increases, the main reactions become more intense, while the secondary reaction of OH* becomes weaker.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Four-dimensional laser absorption cinematography of species and temperature dynamics at 2 kHz in reacting flows

Abstract:A four-dimensional (4D) mid-infrared laser absorption imaging technique has been developed and demonstrated for quantitative, time-resolved, volumetric measurements of temperature and species concentration in dynamic combustion flows. This technique employs a dual high-speed infrared camera setup to capture turnable radiation from a quantum cascade laser near 4.85 µm to resolve rovibrational absorption transitions of carbon monoxide at two orthogonal projection angles. The laser is modulated with a customized waveform to adaptively resolve two target transitions with an increased density of data samples in proximity to the transition peaks, therefore ensuring accurate and quantitative spectral interpretation while minimizing the required frame rate. A 3D masked Tikhonov regularized inversion was performed to reconstruct spectrally resolved absorbance at every grid point of each frame, which enables subsequent interpretation of local gas properties in time. These methods are applied to achieve quantitative 4D cinematography of temperature and carbon monoxide in a propagating C2H4/O2 flame with a spatial pixel resolution of ∼70 µm and a temporal resolution of 2 kHz.

Abstract:An innovative tomographic method using tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) and algebraic reconstruction technique (ART) is presented in this paper for detecting two-dimensional distribution of H2O concentration and temperature in a premixed flame. The collimated laser beam emitted from a low cost diode laser module was delicately split into 24 sub-beams passing through the flame from different angles and the acquired laser absorption signals were used to retrieve flame temperature and H2O concentration simultaneously. The efficiency of the proposed reconstruction system and the effect of measurement noise were numerically evaluated. The temperature and H2O concentration in flat methane/air premixed flames under three different equivalence ratios were experimentally measured and reconstruction results were compared with model calculations. Numerical assessments indicate that the TDLAS tomographic system is capable for temperature and H2O concentration profiles detecting even the noise strength reaches 3% of absorption signal. Experimental results under different combustion conditions are well demonstrated along the vertical direction and the distribution profiles are in good agreement with model calculation. The proposed method exhibits great potential for 2-D or 3-D combustion diagnostics including non-uniform flames.
