Abstract:An unexpected and unwanted influx of gas or “kick” into the wellbore during hydrocarbon drilling can cause catastrophic blowout incidents, resulting in human casualties, ecological damage, and asset losses. The ability of the oil and gas industry to control gas kick depends on our ability to accurately detect and monitor gas migration in a borehole in real-time. This study demonstrates the application of optical fiber-based Distributed Acoustic Sensors (DAS) for early detection and monitoring of gas in wellbore. Multiphase flow experiments conducted in a 5000 ft. deep test-well are analyzed for different injection, circulation, and pressure conditions. In each case, the low-frequency component of DAS demonstrates a superior capability to detect gas signatures both inside the tubing and the annulus of the well, even at small gas volumes. In comparison, the high-frequency DAS data seems limited in detail. The gas influx velocity was calculated using the frequency-wavenumber analysis of the gradient of the low-frequency DAS phase with respect to time, which shows good agreement with theoretical velocity estimates using flow models and surface gauge measurements. This study demonstrates a novel workflow to analyze low-frequency DAS to qualitatively and quantitatively map gas influx in a wellbore.

Abstract:Abstract Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) is an emerging technology that offers great potential in the high-resolution multi-scale seismic investigation due to its dense spatial coverage and cost-effectiveness. However, DAS data notoriously suffer from the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) due to various types of strong noise, for example, high-frequency noise, high-amplitude erratic noise, vertical or horizontal noise. Here, we propose a novel denoising framework by cascading several individual denoising methods that are designed for suppressing specific types of noise. First, to suppress the high-frequency noise, we apply a bandpass filter, which is implemented by recursive infinite impulse response filtering in the time domain. Second, to suppress the erratic noise, we apply a structure-oriented median filter that arises from the reflection seismology field. Finally, to suppress the vertical or horizontal noise, we apply a carefully designed dip filter in the frequency–wavenumber domain. The overall effect of these cascaded denoising steps is that the DAS data can be dramatically improved in terms of SNR. We introduce in detail the implementations of each step in the proposed denoising framework and analyze their respective contribution toward the final improvement. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed denoising framework through the open-access Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy (FORGE) geothermal DAS dataset and provide the reproducible processing workflows for all the DAS subsets containing the catalog earthquake and microseismic events.

Abstract:Over the last decade, distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) has received growing attention in the field of seismic acquisition and monitoring due to its potential high spatial sampling rate, low maintenance cost and high resistance to temperature and pressure. Despite its undeniable advantages, DAS faces some challenges, including a low signal-to-noise ratio, which partly results from the instrument-specific noise generated by DAS interrogators. We present a comparison between two deep learning approaches to address DAS hardware noise and enhance the quality of DAS data. These approaches have the advantage of including real instrumental noise in the neural network training dataset. For the supervised learning (SL) approach, real DAS instrumental noise measured on an acoustically isolated coil is added to synthetic data to generate training pairs of clean/noisy data. For the second method, the Noise2Noise (N2N) approach, the training is performed on noisy/noisy data pairs recorded simultaneously on the downgoing and upgoing parts of a downhole fiber-optic cable. Both approaches allow for the removal of unwanted noise that lies within the same frequency band of the useful signal, a result that cannot be achieved by conventional denoising techniques employing frequency filtering.

Abstract:Full-cycle and real-time monitoring of the wellbore flow during hydraulic fracturing is challenging in unconventional oil and gas development. In the past few years, distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) provides opportunities to measure the acoustic energy distribution along the entire horizontal well. It is a promising tool for real-time monitoring and understanding of the fluid injection process. However, the signal identification of effective flow in the wellbore from DAS data is cumbersome and prone to error. We propose a deep learning approach to solve this problem. The neural network is a combination of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory Networks (BiLSTM) to extract the spatial and temporal features from the DAS data. The trained model is applied to the field data collected in the horizontal well. The results demonstrate its capability for intelligent monitoring and real-time evaluation for hydraulic fracturing.

Abstract:The rapidly advancing technology of distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) has profoundly impacted the field of underwater geophysics. Our study investigates the effectiveness of DAS in underwater geological stability monitoring, with a particular focus on microseismic monitoring in the Xinfengjiang reservoir. The 6.2 km long acquisition setup, covering both land and reservoir bottom, was verified using temporary shore-based short-period seismometers to ensure reliable data acquisition in various environments. Higher background noise was observed on the land section compared with the lakebed section during the day, whereas both sections exhibited similar noise levels at night. We confirmed that the DAS system was capable of detecting distant microseismic events, some of which were previously unreported. These detections exhibited temporal and phase consistency with neighboring seismometers. Comparison of signal-to-noise ratios indicates that the lakebed section demonstrates higher sensitivity. This system delivers cost-effective performance through natural settling, negating the requirement for costly embedding methods. Moreover, the DAS system identified “comet-like” small-scale signals on the lakebed that had eluded shore-based seismometers. This exemplifies the exceptional high-density and high-resolution capabilities of DAS technology in both aquatic and terrestrial environments. This study underscores the pivotal role of the DAS technology in conducting underwater microseismic monitoring, real-time seismic monitoring, seismic mechanism research, and earthquake hazard assessment.
Signal Enhancement in Distributed Acoustic Sensing Data Using a Guided Unsupervised Deep Learning Network

Abstract:Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) is a promising technology introducing a new paradigm in the acquisition of high-resolution seismic data. However, DAS data often show weak signals compared to the background noise, especially in tough installation environments. In this study, we propose a new approach to denoise DAS data that leverages an unsupervised deep learning (DL) model, eliminating the need for labeled training data. The DL model aims to reconstruct the DAS signal while simultaneously attenuating DAS noise. The input DAS data undergo band-pass filtering to eliminate high-frequency content. Subsequently, a continuous wavelet transform (CWT) is performed, and the finest scale is used to guide the DL model in reconstructing the DAS signal. First, we extract 2D patches from both the band-pass filtered data and the CWT scale of the data. Then, these patches are converted using an unrolling mechanism into 1D vectors to form the input of the DL model. The architecture of the proposed DL network is composed of several fully-connected layers. A self-attention layer is further included in each layer to extract the spatial relation between the band-pass filtered data and the CWT scale. Through an iterative process, the DL model tunes its parameters to suppress DAS noise, with the band-pass filtered data serving as the target for the network. We employ the log cosh as a loss function for the DL model, enhancing its robustness against erratic noise. The denoising performance of the proposed framework is validated using field examples from the San Andreas Fault Observatory at Depth (SAFOD) and Frontier Observatory for Research in Geothermal Energy (FORGE) datasets, where the data are recorded by a fiber-optic cable. Comparative analyses against three benchmark methods reveal the robust denoising performance of the proposed framework.

The proposed method provides encouraging results when applied to both synthetic and real DAS datasets. Compared with several traditional and advanced deep learning methods, our proposed method can more effectively attenuate strong noise and better extract hidden signals.

Abstract:Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) is a novel technology, which has the advantages of full well coverage, high sampling density, and strong tolerance to harsh environments. However, compared with conventional geophones, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of vertical seismic profile (VSP) data obtained using DAS is low, and there are many types of noise (such as random noise, coupled noise, fading noise, background abnormal interference, horizontal noise, and checkerboard noise). These noises bring great difficulties to the interpretation of seismic data. Existing DAS VSP data denoising methods generally can only suppress one type of noise. Faced with DAS VSP data with many types of noise, the denoising process is extremely complicated. To solve the above problems, we propose a DAS VSP data denoiser based on the convolutional neural network (CNN), which can suppress a variety of common noise at one time, and the denoising process is more convenient and efficient. In addition, since there is currently no publicly available training set for DAS VSP data, we also use field data and synthetic data to construct a training set for the denoiser. The denoising results show that the proposed method can effectively suppress a variety of common noise in DAS VSP data and the effective signal has almost no energy attenuation. Both the shallow layer signal affected by strong noise and the deep layer signal with weak energy are well recovered.

Abstract:The authors provide a comprehensive review of signal feature extraction and pattern recognition techniques applied in distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) technology. After introducing the fundamentals of DAS, specific applications are considered, and the following techniques have been analysed and compared: feature extraction algorithms based on wavelet decomposition, feature extraction schemes utilising other decomposition models, traditional recognition classifiers, and neural network‐based recognition classifiers using deep learning. Coherent Rayleigh scattering‐based distributed fibre optic sensing technology enables real‐time acquisition of vibration and acoustic information along the optical fibres. However, the complexity of monitoring environments often leads to false alarms and missed detections during the process of information source identification with distributed acoustic sensing (DAS). Therefore, it becomes crucial to effectively extract meaningful signal features and perform accurate pattern recognition in the presence of external noise disturbance. The authors provide a comprehensive review of signal feature extraction and pattern recognition techniques applied in DAS technology. After introducing the fundamentals of DAS, specific applications are considered, and the following techniques have been analysed and compared: feature extraction algorithms based on wavelet decomposition, feature extraction schemes utilising other decomposition models, traditional recognition classifiers, and neural network‐based recognition classifiers using deep learning. Abstract:Traditionally permanent acoustic sensors leak detection techniques have been proven to be very effective in water distribution pipes. However, these methods need long distance deployment and proper position of sensors and cannot be implemented on underground pipelines. An inline-inspection acoustic device is developed which consists of acoustic sensors. The device will travel by the flow of water through the pipes which record all noise events and detect small leaks. However, it records all the noise events regarding background noises, but the time domain noisy acoustic signal cannot manifest complete features such as the leak flow rate which does not distinguish the leak signal and environmental disturbance. This paper presents an algorithm structure with the modularity of wavelet and neural network, which combines the capability of wavelet transform analyzing leakage signals and classification capability of artificial neural networks. This study validates that the time domain is not evident to the complete features regarding noisy leak signals and significance of selection of mother wavelet to extract the noise event features in water distribution pipes. The simulation consequences have shown that an appropriate mother wavelet has been selected and localized to extract the features of the signal with leak noise and background noise, and by neural network implementation, the method improves the classification performance of extracted features.

Abstract:Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) is a new exploration technology widely used to acquire vertical seismic profiles (VSPs). DAS can achieve low-cost and high-density observations, but the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the VSP data collected by DAS is low compared with traditional electrical geophones. Moreover, DAS VSP data cover many types of noise, including random noise, fading noise, checkerboard noise, and long-period noise. These noises bring many difficulties to the imaging and interpretation of DAS VSP data. To solve this problem, we proposed a multistage denoising network (MSDN) to denoise DAS VSP data. MSDN is a progressive denoising network consisting of four stages. MSDN can recover the signal details better than a single-stage denoising network, which is beneficial when processing deep reflection signals. In addition, MSDN combines residual structure and an attention mechanism. The residual structure can prevent the degradation of the deep neural network, while the attention mechanism can make the network focus on effective signals, making network learning more accurate and efficient. Both synthetic data and field data denoising results showed that MSDN could effectively remove various complex noises and restore signals covered by noise. Compared with other denoising methods, our method has improved signal amplitude preservation ability and noise suppression ability.

Abstract:The distributed acoustic sensor（DAS） uses a single optical cable as the sensing unit, which can capture the acoustic and vibration signals along the optical cable in real-time. So it is suitable for monitoring downhole production activities in the process of oil and gas development. The authors applied the DAS system in a gas production well in the South China Sea for in situ monitoring of the whole wellbore for the first time and obtained the distributed acoustic signals along the whole wellbore. These signals can clearly distinguish the vertical section, curve section, and horizontal production section. The collected acoustic signal with the frequency of approximately 50 Hz caused by the electric submersible pump exhibit a signal-to-noise ratio higher than 27 dB. By analyzing the acoustic signals in the production section, it can be located the layers with high gas production rates. Once an accurate physical model is built in the future,the gas production profile will be obtained. In addition, the DAS system can track the trajectory of downhole tools in the wellbore to guide the operation. Through the velocity analysis of the typical signals,the type of fluids in the wellbore can be distinguished. The successful application of the system provides a promising whole wellbore acoustic monitoring tool for the production of marine gas hydrate, with a good application prospect.
SigRecover: Recovering Signal from Noise in Distributed Acoustic Sensing Data Processing

Abstract:Abstract Because of the harsh deployment environment of the fibers, distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) data usually suffer from the low signal-to-noise ratio issue. Many methods, whether simple but efficient or sophisticated but effective, have been proposed for dealing with noise and recovering signals from DAS data. However, no matter what methods we apply, we will inevitably damage the signals, more or less, resulting in coherent signal leakage in the removed noise. Here, we present a method (SigRecover) for minimizing signal leakage by recovering useful signals from removed noise and its open-source package (see Data and Resources). We apply a robust dictionary learning framework to retrieve the coherent signals from removed noise that can be captured by a pretrained library of atoms (features). The atoms are obtained by a fast dictionary-learning approach from the initially denoised data. The proposed framework is a self-learning methodology, which does not require additional training datasets and thus is conveniently applicable to any input data. We use three well-processed examples from the literature to demonstrate the generic performance of the proposed method. The idea behind this article is inspired by similar methods widely used in the exploration seismology community for retrieving signal leakage and is promising not only for DAS data processing, but also for all other multichannel seismological datasets.

On the Use of Low-Frequency Distributed Acoustic Sensing Data for In-Well Monitoring and Well Integrity: Qualitative Interpretation

Abstract:Summary Distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) is used to monitor production and injection wells in real time. Here we present theory, data examples, and interpretation of low-frequency (LF)-DAS data acquired on fiber-optic (FO) cables clamped to the production tubing. We show that these data give unprecedented insights into the well and serve as a tool for qualitative analysis of well integrity, well operations, and production. By understanding these data, we show that we, for example, can detect leaks, monitor valve performance, and detect the liquid level in Annulus A. While in-well DAS’s sensitivity to changes in temperature over time is well known, its sensitivity to pressure and flow at low frequencies has not been well understood. Here, we show that the LF-DAS response is multifaceted and dependent on the fluid content of the different tubulars in a well, the casing, and completion design, and if a valve is open or closed. Very often a pressure response is seen due to an accompanied temperature effect; while this complicates the overall picture for quantitative data analysis, qualitative interpretation can be made simple. Understanding these processes in LF-DAS data forms the foundation for developing automated interpretation algorithms in the future.

Abstract:This article presents a weakly supervised machine learning method, which we call DAS-N2N, for suppressing strong random noise in distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) recordings. DAS-N2N requires no manually produced labels (i.e., pre-determined examples of clean event signals or sections of noise) for training and aims to map random noise processes to a chosen summary statistic, such as the distribution mean, median or mode, whilst retaining the true underlying signal. This is achieved by splicing (joining together) two fibres hosted within a single optical cable, recording two noisy copies of the same underlying signal corrupted by different independent realizations of random observational noise. A deep learning model can then be trained using only these two noisy copies of the data to produce a near fully-denoised copy. Once the model is trained, only noisy data from a single fibre is required. Using a dataset from a DAS array deployed on the surface of the Rutford Ice Stream in Antarctica, we demonstrate that DAS-N2N greatly suppresses incoherent noise and enhances the signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) of natural microseismic icequake events. We further show that this approach is inherently more efficient and effective than standard stop/pass band and white noise (e.g., Wiener) filtering routines, as well as a comparable self-supervised learning method based on masking individual DAS channels. Our preferred model for this task is lightweight, processing 30 seconds of data recorded at a sampling frequency of 1000 Hz over 985 channels (approx. 1 km of fiber) in $<$1 s. Due to the high noise levels in DAS recordings, efficient data-driven denoising methods, such as DAS-N2N, will prove essential to time-critical DAS earthquake detection, particularly in the case of microseismic monitoring.

Abstract:Abstract Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) through fiber optic has been deployed in downhole monitoring for over two decades. Several technological advancements led to a wide acceptance of this technology as a reliable surveillance technique. This paper presents a comprehensive technical review of all the applications of DAS. The paper starts with the fundamentals of fiber optic deployment. Then, an overview of all the applications of DAS including seismic application (vertical seismic profiling), microseismic (hydraulic fracturing characterization), well and pipe integrity (such as leak detection and cement quality), and well and pipe flow monitoring is provided. Flow monitoring contains injection and production flow estimation, phase determination, gas and water breakthrough identification, gas lift surveillance, pump and flow control device performance evaluation, sand production detection, and flow regime recognition. This paper reviews the basics of DAS, fiber types, installation methods, types of recorded data, data processing, historical development, current applications and limitations. The paper provides a concise review using several field cases from over two hundred published papers of Society of Petroleum Engineering (SPE) and journal databases. The applications of DAS in downhole monitoring can be generally divided into the qualitative and quantitative applications. The study discusses deployment methods, case by case worldwide field performance and interpretation/modeling. It also summarizes main lessons, key results, and challenges including data quality, signal to noise ratio effect, and operational conditions such as the installation of the fiber and the complexity of quantitative production prediction and flow profiling. In addition, a comparison between deployment of DAS and other methods is reviewed. This study is the foundation for an ongoing study on wellbore and reservoir surveillance through real time distributed fiber optic sensing (DAS) records along the wellbore. It summarizes the historical development and current limitations to identify the existing gaps and reviews the lessons learned during the two decades of the application of DAS in downhole monitoring.
Acoustic Detection of Pipeline Blockages in Gas Extraction Systems: A Novel Approach

Abstract:Gas extraction is crucial for coal mine safety, yet pipeline blockages by solid slag and water severely hinder efficiency and pose risks. Traditional detection methods are limited by rapid signal attenuation and noise interference. In this study, an acoustic detection technology is introduced for pipeline blockages, utilizing sensors at potential blockage points to collect sound wave data. Experiments with a scaled pipeline model reveal that slag blockages produce characteristic peaks in the 1200 Hz–2000 Hz range, while water blockages show peaks in the 1 kHz–2 kHz and 3.5 kHz–4.5 kHz bands. The longitudinal blockage intensity and extraction pressure significantly affect the sound pressure levels. A reliable fitting model predicts the blockage intensity based on acoustic signals, achieving high accuracy. This novel method enhances blockage identification, offering a non-invasive, cost-effective solution that improves coal mine safety and efficiency.

Abstract:The sensitivity of gas and water phases to DAS acoustic frequency bands can be used to interpret the production profile of horizontal wells. DAS typically collects acoustic signals in the kilohertz range, presenting a key challenge in identifying the sensitive frequency bands of the gas and water phases in the production well for accurate interpretation. In this study, a gas–water two-phase flow–acoustic coupling model for a horizontal well is developed by integrating a gas–water separation flow model with a pipeline acoustic model. The model simulates the sound pressure level (SPL) and amplitude variations of acoustic waves under different flow patterns, spatial locations, and gas–water ratio schemes. The results demonstrate that within the same flow pattern, an increase in the gas–water ratio significantly elevates acoustic amplitude and SPL peaks within the 5–50 Hz frequency band. Analysis of oil field DAS data reveals that the amplitude response range for stages with a lower gas–water ratio falls within 5–10 Hz, whereas stages with a higher gas–water ratio exhibit an amplitude response range of 10–50 Hz.
