Abstract:Panoramic annular lens (PAL) system consists of a panoramic head block unit and a relay lens system, adopting a plane cylindrical projection method to project a cylindrical field of view around the optical axis 360 degrees into a two-dimensional planar annular region to realize super hemispherical imaging. PAL system requires large field of view imaging on a limited image plane, which inevitably results in lower image resolution and poor local detail imaging. However, the information processing speed gets faster with the development of 5G, which leads to a growing demand for better image quality and clarity. This paper presents a PAL system matching image sensors with 4K resolution, which can demonstrate the details about the object and get a smooth and ultra-high definition image. Unlike other sensors, it has large image faces and tiny pixels and the effective number of the pixel is about 24.3 million (4K x 6K). The proposed PAL system has 6 sets of 9 lenses with compact structure. The F-theta distortion of the full field of view is less than 1%, and the modulation transfer function value of each field of view is greater than 0.5 at the Nyquist spatial frequency of 130lp/mm which approaches diffraction limitation. The designed system has good imaging quality and meets the application requirements.

Abstract:The panoramic annular lens (PAL) system can capture plentiful scene information in real time. The locally described freeform surface can provide more degrees of freedom for the optical system design than the globally described one. In this paper, we propose a locally described annular Gaussian radial basis function freeform surface that enables a high-performance yet compact PAL system. The designed PAL system achieves an ultra-wide field of view (FOV) of (30 degrees similar to 125 degrees) x 360 degrees. The F-theta distortion of the system is less than 3%, and the modulation transfer function across the whole FOV is greater than 0.5 at 100 lp/mm. Abstract:A novel panoramic stereo imaging system with double panoramic annular lenses (PAL) is introduced in this paper. The proposed system consists of two coaxial PAL units and images on one sensor. The imaging rings are concentric. The object position can be calculated by triangulation. The novelty of this system is that the central blind zone of one PAL unit is partly used by the other as an image zone. The stereo field of view is 60°~105° × 360°. The depth extracting resolution is about 500 mm at 1line/cm. The F# of the system is about 3, facilitating the system to be applied in low illumination environment. A design is presented and the depth extracting precision is analyzed.

Abstract:An imaging system with wide field of view (FOV) and high resolution is proposed in this paper. The optical design employed monocentric objective lens design combined with the unique arrangement of multi-aperture array, which empowers the system of good tradeoff between imaging performances and structural complexity. A prototype is built based on the design, achieving the field angle of 55° as well as the angular resolution of 40μrad. Experiments show excellent performances in distant view observation and images with 0.1 gigapixels can be finally obtained after image mosaicing, in addition, the proposed system has potential applications in airborne ground observation and crops survey in the future.

Abstract:The panoramic annular lens (PAL) is renowned for providing simultaneous vision of the panoramic space. However, its inherent central blind area is a significant drawback. In this study, we aim to harness the benefits of the PAL while mitigating its limitations by proposing a dual-channel panoramic zoom system without central blind area. The introduction of a positive front lens group for secondary imaging is a critical aspect of our design, which is guided and substantiated by our mathematical imaging model. The results from our design affirm the practicality and effectiveness of the secondary imaging. This design can achieve a zoom ratio of 1 . 46x and a maximum field of view (FoV) range of 71 degrees similar to 100 degrees , enabling zooming from front to rear. Exemplifying compactness, our system measures just 60 mm in total length, while providing a high-resolution output, as indicated by a modulation transfer function exceeding 0.3 at 200 lp/mm . With an F - Theta distortion less than 3.3%, the system maintains low levels of distortion. The analysis is instructive and the design shows potential in situations that necessitate compliance with size and resolution requirements.

Abstract:In this paper, a new panoramic annular lens (PAL) with a super wide angle of (30°-120°)×360° is introduced that consists of two parts: a panoramic front unit (PFU) and a relay lens. First, two PFU arrangements referring to the block structured panoramic front unit (BSPFU) and the shell structured panoramic front unit are compared and analyzed in terms of their field curvature correction ability and structural feasibility for obtaining a wide angle PAL. From the comparison, the BSPFU arrangement turns out to be more promising for its good field curvature correction, structure compactness, and convenience for manufacture and assembly. Second, a relay lens composed of six lenses with three Qbfs aspheres has been designed to match the BSPFU. Finally, image performance analysis of the optimized super wide angle PAL is presented. The results show that the designed PAL equipped with a BSPFU and a Qbfs aspherized relay lens achieves good performance under a super wide field of view of (30°-120°)×360°.

Abstract:We propose a single-sensor gazing panoramic stereo imaging system with no central blind area based on polarization technology. This solution addresses the issue of traditional stereo panoramic systems, which often feature large and complex mirrors in front to reflect light. Drawing inspiration from the traditional dual-channel structure, we apply polarization technology to the first reflective surface, creating a third channel for stereo vision. Our system demonstrates a promising approach to achieving stereo vision without the need for additional complex structures on the original basis.

Abstract:This paper introduces a novel endoscope design based on the panoramic annular staring imaging technology. This design utilizes a single optical system to realize both panoramic observation and local high resolution on a single sensor. The freeform surface is employed to improve the image quality and reduce system volume. The design results based on the commercial optical design software package ZEMAX, indicate that this optical system is able to acquire an excellent image quality with a modulation transfer function above 0.6. Compared with the traditional ones, this novel endoscope design with wide FOV is likely to decrease the diagnostic time dramatically and improve the lesion detect rate considerably.

Abstract:A compact varifocal panoramic annular lens (PAL) system based on the four-component mechanical zoom method is proposed, which solves the problem that the traditional PAL system cannot zoom in to the region of interest. By moving the zoom group and the compensation group, our design achieves continuous zooming, in which the focal length changes from 3.8 to 6 mm. It can keep the position of the image surface unchanged while maintaining a compact structure. The system has a field of view (FoV) of 25°-100° in wide-angle mode and an FoV of 25°-65° in telephoto mode. The modulation transfer function of the wide-angle view is higher than 0.22 at 147 lp/mm. The F-theta distortion is less than 3%, and the relative illuminance is higher than 0.9 in the zoom process. Compared with the zoom PAL system with multiple free-form aspheric surfaces, the proposed system uses multiple spherical lenses and only one Q-type asphere lens to achieve outstanding panoramic zoom imaging results. It is practical and straightforward, easy to manufacture, detect, and mass produce.

Abstract:A panoramic long-wave infrared athermal system is introduced in this paper. The proposed system includes a panoramic annular lens (PAL) block providing a stereo field of view of (30 deg - 100 deg) x 360 deg without the need to move its components. Moreover, to ensure the imaging quality at different temperatures, a refractive/diffractive hybrid lens is introduced to achieve optical passive athermalization. The system operates in a spectral band between 8 and 12 mu m, with a total length of 175 mm and a focal length of 3.4 mm. To get a bright and clear image, the aperture of the system was set to f /1.15. The introduction of aspherical surface and even-order diffractive surface not only eliminates the differential thermal but also makes the structure simple and lightweight and improves the image quality. The results show that the modulation transfer function below 20 lp/mm of the system is above 0.2 at each temperature ranging from -20 degrees C to +60 degrees C, which is close to the diffraction limit. The system is suitable to be applied in an uncooled infrared focal plane array detector and will serve as a static alert system. It has a number of pixels of 640 x 480, and the pixel size is 25 mu m. Abstract:The digitization of objects' full surfaces finds widespread applications in fields such as virtual reality, art and design, and medical and biological sciences. For the realization of three-dimensional full-surface digitization of objects within complex sceneries, we propose a straightforward, efficient, and robust panoramic three-dimensional optical digitization system. This system contains a laser-based optical three-dimensional measurement system and a bi-mirror. By integrating mirrors into the system, we enable the illumination of the object from all angles using the projected laser beam in a single scanning process. Moreover, the main camera employed in the system can acquire three-dimensional information of the object from several different viewpoints. The rotational scanning method enhances the efficiency and applicability of the three-dimensional scanning process, enabling the acquisition of surface information of large-scale objects. After obtaining the three-dimensional data of the sample from different viewpoints using laser triangulation, mirror reflection transformation was employed to obtain the full-surface three-dimensional data of the object in the global coordinate system. The proposed method has been subjected to precision and validity experiments using samples with different surface characteristics and sizes, resulting in the demonstration of its capability for achieving correct three-dimensional digitization of the entire surface in diverse complex sceneries.

Abstract:A design method for the distortionless catadioptric panoramic imaging system is proposed in this paper. The panoramic system mainly consists of two parts, a reflecting surface system with relay lens and a CCD camera. A mapping relationship between the real image plane and the projection surface is established to acquires low distorted imaging features easily. And the design of freeform surface is applied to the reflecting surfaces to correct distortion. After iteratively optimize the freeform surfaces, the image quality is gradually improved. The simulation results show that compared with traditional system, the new freeform surface system has simple design, attaining higher performance and has the advantage of small scene distortion and making the image more suitable and convenient for observing.

Abstract:A panoramic annular lens can provide abundant spatial information in real time with its compact and scalable structure. To deal with extreme temperature environments and to improve the utilization of an image plane, we propose a high-performance compact athermal panoramic annular lens with separated radial optical power. By introducing multiple free-form surfaces, the system achieves a field of view of (40 degrees similar to 100 degrees) x 360 degrees, an f-number of 2.2, and a total length of 40 mm. The modulation transfer function of the system's full fields of view is greater than 0.5 at 200 lp/mm, and the distortion is less than 2.5%. It can work stably in the range of -30 degrees C to 70 degrees C. Abstract:A new improved design method of the panoramic annular lens (PAL) with aspheric surfaces is introduced. The structure is not only helpful to enlarge the field of view (FOV) of the system, but also help to make a horizontal symmetric field of view. The field of view reaches (-30 degrees-+30 degrees) x 360 degrees and was distortion controlled to reduce blind zone in the center. The field of view and distortion of PAL was investigated theoretically and method of aspheric surface design was also discussed. An aspheric PAL and its relay lens group were designed. The total length was 20.4mm, and the focal length was 0.3mm. To get bright and clear image, the aperture of the system was set to f/2.88, and the diameter was 16.6mm. The spectral range was from 0.486 similar to 0.656um. The relay lens group was consisted of 8 pieces of lenses, with a back focal length (BFL) of 2mm. MTF below 70 lp/mm of the system is above 0.5. The result shows that the aberrations are corrected well.

Abstract:A panoramic optical annular staring imaging technology was presented,which could be used to image the surrounding 360° scene at one time without rotating the optical system.Imaging characteristics of the panoramic annular lens was analyzed and a design example was given.According to the design,a prototype of the panoramic annular staring optical system had developed and panoramic ring images could be obtained.With digital image processing,the panoramic image could be expanded with self-written software.Potential application of this technology in industry and defense was discussed.

Abstract:360-degree panoramic stereo profilometry has been used in many fields for its large field of view. The paper presents a panoramic stereoscopic scanning measurement system leveraging a camera equipped with a panoramic annular lens and an omnidirectional ring-shaped structured light. The ring-shaped structured light assembly comprises a collimated laser, an axicon lens, and a spherical mirror. The system facilitates a 360-degree panoramic stereo scanning measurement by a translation stage movement. Additionally, based on the calibration result of the panoramic annular camera, we propose a calibration algorithm based on the concept of the light cone to calibrate the spatial position of the ring-shaped structured light during the scanning process. Experimental validation demonstrates the calibration and measurement accuracy of the proposed system. The system features simplicity in structure, ease of calibration, and has significant application prospects.

Abstract:An inevitable problem of Panoramic Annular Lens (PAL) System is the blind area in the central part of image plane, which vastly reduces the pixel efficiency of detector. Here we present a design of PAL system based on dichroic filter, which can combine two channels of rays in different bands and image them on the same detector. The dichroic filter in this paper is designed to make ultraviolet rays reflect and visible rays transmit, and the ultraviolet rays are imaged on the PAL imaging area while the visible rays are imaged on the blind area of conventional PAL image plane. In order to image both bands of rays on the same plane, we add a correcting lens group in front of PAL system. As a result, the FOV of ultraviolet channel is ranging from 30°~90° and the one of visible channel is ranging from 0°~10°.

Abstract:Panoramic annular lens (PAL) is a type of special optical system that can transform the cylindrical side view onto a planar annular image. We propose a compact polarization-based dual-view panoramic lens to solve the two major limitations of the conventional PAL structure: large front annular lens and lack of forward view. Dual-view imaging capability, which is highly needed for some applications, is achieved by using a polarization technique. The diameter ratio of the proposed front PAL lens and the sensor is reduced to less than 1.5, while it is larger than 2.5 for traditional PAL systems, expanding its applications in space-confined environments.

Abstract:Car camera lens is widely used for the safety system of all kinds of vehicles. The car lens should have very wide field angle, strong ability to endure vibration and thermo-mechanical instability as well as erosion. According to these requirements, a new car lens is designed based on the aspheric glass lenses. The whole structure of car lens contains six separated glass lenses including two aspheric lenses. To reduce the cost, the aspheric lenses are made from low-Tg glass which is adaptable for mass production by glass molding press. The total track of lens is less than 30mm. For the enhancement of night vision, the F-number is set to be 2.4. The full FOV (field of view) of 160 is wide enough to capture all the dangerous information around the car. The imaging resolution is designed to be 3 Mega pixels. The designed result proves that the new car lens features high imaging quality. Its MTF (modulation transfer function) value is not less than 0.15 at the Nyquist frequency as for the field angle of 160. At the half Nyquist frequency, the MTF values of the most field angles are not less than 0.5. Therefore, the new lens could be used in the front of car to monitoring the dangerous cases around the corner.

Abstract:We propose a novel design of panoramic annular lenses (PAL) for the imaging of 360 degrees surroundings with a large field of view (FOV) ranging from 30 degrees similar to 105 degrees, which can partly realize the zooming function. Its wavelength band is between 486 and 656 nanometers. The conventional vari-focal PAL is based on the axial shift of some optical components, which will make the blind zone larger and out of the sensing area, while our design is based on the lateral shift, which can make some imaging area zoom in, keep the area of blind zone stay the same, and minimize the whole scale of this system. In order to change the focal length of conventional PAL system, we introduce several pairs of free-form surfaces (Alvarez surfaces) which can be regarded as several plano-spherical lenses and change the focal power of the whole optical system. As we set two different configurations (long focal length and wide angle), all of the optical parameters are designed and optimized with the help of the software (Zemax).
