Abstract:Research has indicated a negative impact of physical activity on academic burnout among students, however, there is a paucity of evidence about the underlying mechanism of this association in Pakistani students. The present research seeks to investigate the relationship between physical activity and academic burnout by investigating the potential mediating effects of adherence to the Mediterranean diet (MD) and body mass index (BMI). A sample of 596 students using a cross-sectional survey design was gathered from two public universities (Riphah International University and Mohammed Ali Jinnah University) in Rawalpindi, Pakistan from June to July 2022. The study participants were asked to fill out the Physical Activity Rating Scale-3, the Learning Burnout Scale, and the Test of Adherence to MD questionnaires. The study employed descriptive, bivariate, and path analysis through regression utilizing the SPSS software version 27. The findings demonstrated a negative correlation between academic burnout and BMI, physical activity, and adherence to the MD. The relationship between physical activity and academic burnout was mediated by BMI. Physical activity and academic burnout were inversely correlated, with adherence to the MD and BMI interacting as sequential mediators. The outcomes of this research have expanded our knowledge of the association between physical activity and academic burnout and have suggested crucial and appropriate strategies for addressing student academic burnout.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
### The Problem the Paper Attempts to Solve This paper aims to explore the relationship between physical activity and academic burnout in the educational environment of Pakistan, and to investigate the potential mediating roles of the Mediterranean diet (MD) and body mass index (BMI) between these two factors. Specifically, the paper seeks to answer the following questions: 1. **The relationship between physical activity and academic burnout**: Is there a negative impact of physical activity on academic burnout? 2. **The mediating role of the Mediterranean diet**: Does the Mediterranean diet mediate the relationship between physical activity and academic burnout? 3. **The mediating role of BMI**: Does BMI mediate the relationship between physical activity and academic burnout? ### Background and Motivation - **Academic Burnout**: Academic burnout refers to extreme emotional, psychological, and physical fatigue caused by prolonged high academic pressure. It manifests as a sense of fatigue, indifference or detachment from academic activities, and a decline in personal accomplishment. - **Impact of the Pandemic**: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to online learning and social isolation measures, which have limited students' opportunities for physical activity, potentially exacerbating academic burnout. - **Gaps in Existing Research**: Although existing research suggests a negative impact of physical activity on academic burnout, there is a lack of studies on the mechanisms behind these relationships, especially among Pakistani students. ### Research Methods - **Sample**: The study employed a cross-sectional survey design, collecting data from 596 students from two public universities in Rawalpindi, Pakistan (Riphah International University and Muhammad Ali Jinnah University). - **Measurement Tools**: - Physical Activity: Assessed using the revised Physical Activity Rating Scale-3. - Academic Burnout: Assessed using the Learning Burnout Scale for College Students. - Mediterranean Diet: Assessed using the Test of Adherence to Mediterranean Diet, KIDMED. - BMI: Calculated by self-reported weight (kg) divided by height squared (m^2). - **Data Analysis**: Descriptive analysis, bivariate correlation analysis, and path analysis were conducted using SPSS software. ### Main Findings - **Physical Activity and Academic Burnout**: Physical activity is negatively correlated with academic burnout, meaning the more physical activity, the lower the academic burnout. - **Mediating Role of BMI**: BMI partially mediates the relationship between physical activity and academic burnout. - **Mediating Role of the Mediterranean Diet**: The Mediterranean diet, along with BMI, sequentially mediates the relationship between physical activity and academic burnout. ### Conclusion This study extends our understanding of the relationship between physical activity and academic burnout and suggests strategies to alleviate student academic burnout by promoting physical activity, the Mediterranean diet, and a healthy BMI. These findings have significant implications for public health policy and educational practice, emphasizing the responsibility of governments, educational institutions, and student welfare organizations in promoting active student participation in physical activities.
