Abstract:Assessment, Ahead of Print. Although ecological momentary assessment (EMA) provides an opportunity for the examination of intervention mechanisms in real time, there are few validated tools to assess key treatment mechanisms in EMA studies. Our focus in this study is a potentially critical treatment mechanism, improvement in self-efficacy for managing negative emotions. We examined the psychometric properties of the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) self-efficacy for managing negative emotions scale measured via EMA. Participants (n = 145 college students) in a clinical trial of Dialectical Behavior Therapy skills completed four daily EMAs for 6 weeks (13,153 total responses). Results indicated (a) excellent internal consistency and good factor structure, (b) sufficient variability at both the between- and the within-persons levels, and (c) strong construct and predictive validity. This study supports the validity of an EMA measure of self-efficacy for managing negative emotions that can be used in real time, both in intervention studies and in observational research.

Abstract:Social media generate data on human behaviour at large scales and over long periods of time, posing a complementary approach to traditional methods in the social sciences. Millions of texts from social media can be processed with computational methods to study emotions over time and across regions. However, recent research has shown weak correlations between social media emotions and affect questionnaires at the individual level and between static regional aggregates of social media emotion and subjective well-being at the population level, questioning the validity of social media data to study emotions. Yet, to date, no research has tested the validity of social media emotion macroscopes to track the temporal evolution of emotions at the level of a whole society. Here we present a pre-registered prediction study that shows how gender-rescaled time series of Twitter emotional expression at the national level substantially correlate with aggregates of self-reported emotions in a weekly representative survey in the United Kingdom. A follow-up exploratory analysis shows a high prevalence of third-person references in emotionally-charged tweets, indicating that social media data provide a way of social sensing the emotions of others rather than just the emotional experiences of users. These results show that, despite the issues that social media have in terms of representativeness and algorithmic confounding, the combination of advanced text analysis methods with user demographic information in social media emotion macroscopes can provide measures that are informative of the general population beyond social media users.

Abstract:Using Plutchik’s wheel of emotions framework, we identify the emotional content of 133,487 social media posts and the audience’s emotional engagement expressed in 2,824,162 comments on those posts. We measure nine emotions (anger, anticipation, anxiety, disgust, joy, fear, sadness, surprise, trust) and two sentiments (positive and negative) using two extraction resources (EmoLex, LIWC) for eight major news outlets across four social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube) during eight months. We then apply two approaches (Logistic Regression, Long Short-Term Memory) to predict emotional audience reactions before and after publishing the posts. Findings show significant differences for positive emotions but not for negative in the comments among the platforms. F1-scores for predicting emotional audience engagement are more than 70% for some emotions for some news outlets. Implications are that news outlets have leverage in steering emotional engagement for posts on social media platforms. The findings have theoretical and practical implications for understanding the complex emotional and informational interplay among social media content, platforms, and audiences.

Abstract:As one of the most popular social media platforms in China, Weibo has aggregated huge numbers of texts containing people's thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Analyzing emotions expressed on Weibo has attracted a great deal of academic attention. Emotion lexicon is a vital foundation of sentiment analysis, but the existing lexicons still have defects such as a limited variety of emotions, poor cross-scenario adaptability, and confusing written and online expressions and words. By combining grounded theory and semi-automatic methods, we built a Weibo-based emotion lexicon for sentiment analysis. We first took a bottom-up approach to derive a theoretical model for emotions expressed on Weibo, and the substantive coding led to eight core emotion categories: joy, expectation, love, anger, anxiety, disgust, sadness, and surprise. Second, we built a new emotion lexicon containing 2,964 words by manually selecting seed words, constructing a word vector model to expand words, and making rules to filter words. Finally, we tested the effectiveness of our lexicon by using a lexicon-based approach to recognize the emotions expressed in Weibo text. The results showed that our lexicon performed better in Weibo emotion recognition than five other Chinese emotion lexicons. This study proposed a method to construct an emotion lexicon that considered both theory and application by combining qualitative research and artificial intelligence methods. Our work also provided a reference for future research in the field of social media sentiment analysis.

Abstract:Social information processing is vital for inferring emotional states in others, yet affective neuroscience has only begun to scratch the surface of how we represent emotional information in the brain. Most previous affective neuroscience work has used isolated stimuli such as static images of affective faces or scenes to probe affective processing. While this work has provided rich insight to the initial stages of emotion processing (encoding cues), activation to isolated stimuli provides limited insight into later phases of emotion processing such as interpretation of cues or interactions between cues and established cognitive schemas. Recent work has highlighted the potential value of using complex video stimuli to probe socio-emotional processing, highlighting the need to develop standardized video coding schemas as this exciting field expands. Toward that end, we present a standardized and open-source coding system for complex videos, two fully coded videos, and a video and code processing Python library. The EmoCodes manual coding system provides an externally validated and replicable system for coding complex cartoon stimuli, with future plans to validate the system for other video types. The emocodes Python library provides automated tools for extracting low-level features from video files as well as tools for summarizing and analyzing the manual codes for suitability of use in neuroimaging analysis. Materials can be freely accessed at https://emocodes.org/. These tools represent an important step toward replicable and standardized study of socio-emotional processing using complex video stimuli. EmBody/EmFace as a new open tool to assess emotion recognition from body and face expressions

Abstract:Nonverbal expressions contribute substantially to social interaction by providing information on another person's intentions and feelings. While emotion recognition from dynamic facial expressions has been widely studied, dynamic body expressions and the interplay of emotion recognition from facial and body expressions have attracted less attention, as suitable diagnostic tools are scarce. Here, we provide validation data on a new open source paradigm enabling the assessment of emotion recognition from both 3D-animated emotional body expressions (Task 1: EmBody) and emotionally corresponding dynamic faces (Task 2: EmFace). Both tasks use visually standardized items depicting three emotional states (angry, happy, neutral), and can be used alone or together. We here demonstrate successful psychometric matching of the EmBody/EmFace items in a sample of 217 healthy subjects with excellent retest reliability and validity (correlations with the Reading-the-Mind-in-the-Eyes-Test and Autism-Spectrum Quotient, no correlations with intelligence, and given factorial validity). Taken together, the EmBody/EmFace is a novel, effective (< 5 min per task), highly standardized and reliably precise tool to sensitively assess and compare emotion recognition from body and face stimuli. The EmBody/EmFace has a wide range of potential applications in affective, cognitive and social neuroscience, and in clinical research studying face- and body-specific emotion recognition in patient populations suffering from social interaction deficits such as autism, schizophrenia, or social anxiety.

Abstract:<p>Analyzing social media has become a common way for capturing and understanding people's opinions, sentiments, interests, and reactions to ongoing events. Social media has thus become a rich and real‐time source for various kinds of public opinion and sentiment studies. According to psychology and neuroscience, human emotions are known to be strongly dependent on sensory perceptions. Although sensation is the most fundamental antecedent of human emotions, prior works have not looked into their relation to emotions based on social media texts. In this paper, we report the results of our study on sensation effects that underlie human emotions as revealed in social media. We focus on the key five types of sensations: sight, hearing, touch, smell, and taste. We first establish a correlation between emotion and sensation in terms of linguistic expressions. Then, in the second part of the paper, we define novel features useful for extracting sensation information from social media. Finally, we design a method to classify texts into ones associated with different types of sensations. The sensation dataset resulting from this research is opened to the public to foster further studies.</p>

Abstract:Opinion mining techniques, investigating if text is expressing a positive or negative opinion, continuously gain in popularity, attracting the attention of many scientists from different disciplines. Specific use cases, however, where the expressed opinion is indisputably positive or negative, render such solutions obsolete and emphasize the need for a more in-depth analysis of the available text. Emotion analysis is a solution to this problem, but the multi-dimensional elements of the expressed emotions in text along with the complexity of the features that allow their identification pose a significant challenge. Machine learning solutions fail to achieve a high accuracy, mainly due to the limited availability of annotated training datasets, and the bias introduced to the annotations by the personal interpretations of emotions from individuals. A hybrid rule-based algorithm that allows the acquisition of a dataset that is annotated with regard to the Plutchik’s eight basic emotions is proposed in this paper. Emoji, keywords and semantic relationships are used in order to identify in an objective and unbiased way the emotion expressed in a short phrase or text. The acquired datasets are used to train machine learning classification models. The accuracy of the models and the parameters that affect it are presented in length through an experimental analysis. The most accurate model is selected and offered through an API to tackle the emotion detection in social media posts.

Abstract:This paper presents a new approach to the demarcation of social emotions, based on their dependence on social appraisals that are designed to assess events bearing on social concerns. Previous theoretical attempts to characterize social emotions are compared, and their inconsistencies highlighted. Evidence for the present formulation is derived from theory and research into links between appraisals and emotions. Emotions identified as social using our criteria are also shown to bring more consistent consequences for social behavior than nonsocial emotions. We conclude by considering ways of validating and refining our classification.

Abstract:Authors of posts in social media communicate their emotions and what causes them with text and images. While there is work on emotion and stimulus detection for each modality separately, it is yet unknown if the modalities contain complementary emotion information in social media. We aim at filling this research gap and contribute a novel, annotated corpus of English multimodal Reddit posts. On this resource, we develop models to automatically detect the relation between image and text, an emotion stimulus category and the emotion class. We evaluate if these tasks require both modalities and find for the image-text relations, that text alone is sufficient for most categories (complementary, illustrative, opposing): the information in the text allows to predict if an image is required for emotion understanding. The emotions of anger and sadness are best predicted with a multimodal model, while text alone is sufficient for disgust, joy, and surprise. Stimuli depicted by objects, animals, food, or a person are best predicted by image-only models, while multimodal models are most effective on art, events, memes, places, or screenshots.

Abstract:Searches for autism on social media have soared, making it a top topic. Social media posts convey not only plain text, but also sentiments and emotions that provide insight into the experiences of the autism community. While sentiment analysis categorizes overall sentiment, emotion analysis provides nuanced insights into specific emotional states. The objective of this study is to identify emotions in posts related to autism and compare the emotions specifically contained in posts that include the hashtag #ActuallyAutistic with those that do not. Methods: We extracted a sample of X' posts related to autism and used DistilBERT to assign one out of six emotions (sadness, joy, love, anger, fear, surprise) to each post. Results: We have analyzed a total of 414,287 posts, 98,602 (23.8%) of those included the hashtag #ActuallyAutistic. The most common expressed emotion was joy, which was expressed in 52.5% of the posts, followed by sadness, identified in 28.6% of the posts. 12% of the posts expressed fear, 4.9% reflected anger, 1.1% showed love, and 0.9% expressed surprise. Posts tagged as #ActuallyAutistic showed less joy (27.1% vs. 60.4% in posts without this hashtag, p<0.001) and more sadness (52.7% vs. 21.1% in those without the hashtag, p<0.001). Conclusions: The use of the hashtag #ActuallyAutistic is associated with a different emotional tone, characterized by less joy and more sadness. These results suggest the need for greater support and acceptance towards the autistic community, both online and in society in general. Insights from our study can be valuable for policy makers, health, educational or other programmes aiming at enhancing well-being, inclusiveness, improve services, and create a more compassionate and understanding atmosphere for autistic people.
Discovering Basic Emotion Sets via Semantic Clustering on a Twitter Corpus

Abstract:A plethora of words are used to describe the spectrum of human emotions, but how many emotions are there really, and how do they interact? Over the past few decades, several theories of emotion have been proposed, each based around the existence of a set of 'basic emotions', and each supported by an extensive variety of research including studies in facial expression, ethology, neurology and physiology. Here we present research based on a theory that people transmit their understanding of emotions through the language they use surrounding emotion keywords. Using a labelled corpus of over 21,000 tweets, six of the basic emotion sets proposed in existing literature were analysed using Latent Semantic Clustering (LSC), evaluating the distinctiveness of the semantic meaning attached to the emotional label. We hypothesise that the more distinct the language is used to express a certain emotion, then the more distinct the perception (including proprioception) of that emotion is, and thus more 'basic'. This allows us to select the dimensions best representing the entire spectrum of emotion. We find that Ekman's set, arguably the most frequently used for classifying emotions, is in fact the most semantically distinct overall. Next, taking all analysed (that is, previously proposed) emotion terms into account, we determine the optimal semantically irreducible basic emotion set using an iterative LSC algorithm. Our newly-derived set (Accepting, Ashamed, Contempt, Interested, Joyful, Pleased, Sleepy, Stressed) generates a 6.1% increase in distinctiveness over Ekman's set (Angry, Disgusted, Joyful, Sad, Scared). We also demonstrate how using LSC data can help visualise emotions. We introduce the concept of an Emotion Profile and briefly analyse compound emotions both visually and mathematically.

Abstract:Emoji evolved as an attractive instrument to measure emotions in preadolescents due to their potential to express a wide range of emotions. However, the emotional meaning of emoji can be ambiguous and is often not universal across age groups, which has not been considered when developing emoji questionnaires. Hence, this research aimed to develop an emoji-based self-report measurement tool to measure emotional responses to food products in preadolescents. In total, 5 studies were conducted, and 454 preadolescents (aged 9-13 years) participated to develop the tool. First, preadolescents selected food-related emoji (Study 1, n=96), then they evaluated their dimensional emotional meaning using projective mapping (Study 2, n=162). They then evaluated the linguistic semantic meaning by describing emoji with emotion words (Check-All-That-Apply) (Study 3, n=92) and vice versa (Study 4, n=85). Finally, one-on-one interviews using a modified version of the Repertory Grid Method were conducted to investigate emoji more in depth (Study 5, n=19). The findings resulted in 17 emoji pairs associated with specific linguistic semantic and dimensional (valence, power, and arousal) meanings. Based on this, we developed an emoji-based self-report measurement tool to measure emotions in response to food products with two suggested response formats, the CATA Emoji Pair Questionnaire and the Emoji Pair Rating Scale. Future research will test the discriminative ability of this tool over a wide range of food products. The questionnaire will allow for a better understanding of preadolescents' affective responses to food and could be used in food innovation targeted at preadolescents to promote healthier food behaviors.

Norms of online expressions of emotion: Comparing Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and WhatsApp

Abstract:The main aim of this study was to examine the norms of expressing emotions on social media. Specifically, the perceived appropriateness (i.e. injunctive norms) of expressing six discrete emotions (i.e. sadness, anger, disappointment, worry, joy, and pride) was investigated across four different social media platforms. Drawing on data collected in March 2016 among 1201 young Dutch users (15–25 years), we found that positive expressions were generally perceived as more appropriate than negative expressions across all platforms. In line with the objective of the study, some platform differences were found. The expression of negative emotions was rated as most appropriate for WhatsApp, followed by Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. For positive emotion expression, perceived appropriateness was highest for WhatsApp, followed by Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter. Additionally, some gender differences were found, while age showed little variations. Overall, the results contribute to a more informed understanding of emotion expression online.

Abstract:Aesthetic perception and judgement are not merely cognitive processes, but also involve feelings. Therefore, the empirical study of these experiences requires conceptualization and measurement of aesthetic emotions. Despite the long-standing interest in such emotions, we still lack an assessment tool to capture the broad range of emotions that occur in response to the perceived aesthetic appeal of stimuli. Elicitors of aesthetic emotions are not limited to the arts in the strict sense, but extend to design, built environments, and nature. In this article, we describe the development of a questionnaire that is applicable across many of these domains: the Aesthetic Emotions Scale (Aesthemos). Drawing on theoretical accounts of aesthetic emotions and an extensive review of extant measures of aesthetic emotions within specific domains such as music, literature, film, painting, advertisements, design, and architecture, we propose a framework for studying aesthetic emotions. The Aesthemos, which is based on this framework, contains 21 subscales with two items each, that are designed to assess the emotional signature of responses to stimuli's perceived aesthetic appeal in a highly differentiated manner. These scales cover prototypical aesthetic emotions (e.g., the feeling of beauty, being moved, fascination, and awe), epistemic emotions (e.g., interest and insight), and emotions indicative of amusement (humor and joy). In addition, the Aesthemos subscales capture both the activating (energy and vitality) and the calming (relaxation) effects of aesthetic experiences, as well as negative emotions that may contribute to aesthetic displeasure (e.g., the feeling of ugliness, boredom, and confusion).

Abstract:Emotions are highly influential to many psychological processes. Indeed, research employing emotional stimuli is rapidly escalating across the field of psychology. However, challenges remain regarding discrete evocation of frequently co-elicited emotions such as amusement and happiness, or anger and disgust. Further, as much contemporary work in emotion employs college students, we sought to additionally evaluate the efficacy of film clips to discretely elicit these more challenging emotions in a young adult population using an online medium. The internet is an important tool for investigating responses to emotional stimuli, but validations of emotionally evocative film clips across laboratory and web-based settings are limited in the literature. An additional obstacle is identifying stimuli amidst the numerous film clip validation studies. During our investigation, we recognized the lack of a categorical database to facilitate rapid identification of useful film clips for individual researchers’ unique investigations. Consequently, here we also sought to produce the first compilation of such stimuli into an accessible and comprehensive catalog. We based our catalog upon prior work as well as our own, and identified 24 articles and 295 film clips from four decades of research. We present information on the validation of these clips in addition to our own research validating six clips using online administration settings. The results of our search in the literature and our own study are presented in tables designed to facilitate and improve a selection of highly valid film stimuli for future research.

Abstract:We aimed to establish and evaluate a standardized emotional situation sentence system (ESSS) relevant to the lives of college students to supplement prior literature and adapt to the needs of emotional research. Two studies were designed for this research; study 1 examined the effect of words in the ESSS and study 2 involved the use of pictures. For Study 1, 778 items were selected by 607 college students and 15 experts. We then tested the scale with 80 undergraduate participants. The ESSS sentences were rated on their degree of valence, arousal, and dominance using a 9-point scale. Cronbach's α (greater than 0.986) of the overall score as well as each sub-score in the three components confirmed the scale's reliability. As seen on a scatter plot, the results suggest that negative emotions (fear, disgust, anger, sadness, anxiety) are convergent and different from the distribution of positive (happiness) and neutral emotions. Study 2 included 30 participants to compare the difference in valence and arousal between the ESSS and emotional pictures. The results indicate that the ESSS is a standardized, situational, and ecological emotional contextual text system, well-suited to invoke emotion in college students. The ESSS has significantly better arousal and potency than pictures; moreover, it can be applied to experimental studies of anxiety-related emotions. However, emotion pictures have shorter response times, and wider application ranges, and they can include more cross-cultural characteristics compared to words.
