Abstract:Poleward trends in seasonal-mean latitudes of tropical cyclones (TCs) have been identified in direct observations from 1980 to present. Paleoclimate reconstructions also indicate poleward-equatorward migrations over centennial to millennial timescales. Hadley circulation (HC) is often both implicitly and explicitly invoked to provide dynamical linkages to these shifts, although no direct analysis of concurrent changes in the recent period has been presented. Here the observational TC record (1981-2016) and the ERA-Interim, JRA55 and MERRA2 reanalyses are studied to examine potential relationships between the two. A zonally-asymmetric HC is defined by employing Helmholtz theory for vector decomposition and this permits the derivation of novel HC diagnostics local to TC basins. Coherent variations in both long-term linear trends and detrended interannual variability are found. TC genesis and lifetime maximum intensity latitudes share trend sign and magnitude with shifts in local HC extent, with rates being ~0.25 plus/minus 0.1 degrees latitude decade-1. Both these lifecycle stages in hemispheric means and all Pacific TC basins, as well as poleward-extreme North Atlantic lysis latitudes, shared ~35% of their interannual variability with HC extent. Local HC intensity is linked only to eastern North Pacific TC latitudes, where strong local overturning corresponds to equatorward TC shifts. Examination of potential dynamical linkages implicates La Niña-like sea surface temperature gradients to poleward HC termini. This corresponds to increased tropical and reduced subtropical vertical wind shear everywhere except in the North Atlantic and western North Pacific, where the opposite is true. These results quantify a long-hypothesized link between TCs and the large-scale oceanic-atmospheric state.

Poleward Shift in Tropical Cyclone Tracks in the Northwest Pacific During Warm Periods: Past and Future

Abstract:We used the top age of storm-relocated coral blocks (SRCBs) from Xisha Islands and Huangyan Island, South China Sea (SCS), in combination with existing paleotempestology records and instrumental climatic data, to reconstruct the spatio-temporal changes in tropical cyclone (TC) activity over the past millennium, and to project its future trends in the Northwestern Pacific region. We found a positive correlation between the frequencies of TCs, typhoons, and super-typhoons and the NINO3.4 on the interannual timescale during 1945-2019. TCs latitude has a significant positive correlation with sea surface temperature, with a northward migration rate of 80 +/- 11 km per decade during 1951-2019. Coral delta O-18 can well indicate the month of paleo-TCs occurrence. The frequency of SRCBs (and by inference, TCs) is relatively low during relatively warm periods (RWP) but high during relatively cold periods (RCP) in the SCS. The spatio-temporal pattern inferred from paleotempestology records further supports the notion of North-South migration in TC activity as revealed by the instrumental record in this study. TC activity mainly affected relatively low latitudes (e.g., Philippines, Vietnam, and Hainan, Guangdong, Taiwan) during the RCP (AD 1450-1900), but it migrated from low latitudes towards higher latitudes during the RWP (AD 1000-1450), affecting locations such as Zhejiang, Jiangsu, and Shandong, southwestern Japan, the Korean Peninsula, and even Northeast China. Fujian and northern Guangdong may be in a transition zone of paleo-TC activity between the North and the South in the past millennium. As global warming continues, the mean tracks and landfall locations of TCs will continue to migrate northward in this region.
Enhanced Understanding of Poleward Migration of Tropical Cyclone Genesis

Abstract:The known trends of poleward migration for the tropical cyclone (TC) genesis in both hemispheres are discussed from different perspectives. It is shown that the poleward migration rate of the annually averaged latitude of TC genesis in the Northern Hemisphere is significantly affected by the regional variations of TC number in recent decades, especially an increase in the North Atlantic Ocean and a decrease in the western North Pacific Ocean. The poleward migration rates of TC genesis in the two hemispheres get closer when the effect of the regional TC number variation is excluded. The poleward migration of TC genesis without the effect of regional TC number variation is found to have a good correlation with the poleward shift of the edges of the tropics in both hemispheres. A decreasing trend of the cyclonic vorticity in the lower-troposphere over the tropical ocean regions is also identified in both hemispheres, which leads to a poleward shift of the equatorward boundary for TC genesis. The poleward migration of TC genesis after the effect of regional TC number variation is excluded and can thus be considered as a result of the tropical expansion. It is shown that the genesis of TCs with a different intensity has a different migration rate. When excluding the effect of the regional TC number variation, the poleward migration of TCs with a different intensity has a similar trend in both hemispheres. The tropical storms and intense typhoons have significant poleward migration trends, while the weak typhoons behave differently.
The Curious Association Between Hadley Circulation Intensity and the Meridional Distribution of Tropical Cyclones in the Eastern North Pacific

Abstract:It has recently been shown that an interesting inverse relationship exists between the strength of the overturning in the regional boreal Hadley circulation and tropical cyclone genesis and lifetime maximum intensity latitudes in the eastern North Pacific. One of the particularly curious aspects of this association is its uniqueness to this ocean basin. We show here that this result can be understood as the outcome of an equatorward shift in the local Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) and a moderate reduction of tropical vertical shear. These two factors are not necessarily concomitant. The magnitude of the vertical shear change is low enough to suggest that the primary physical mechanism behind this inverse relationship is the equatorward shift in the ITCZ. Since a significant proportion of tropical cyclone genesis results from aggregated convective cells forming into a coherent convective vortex and being shed from the ITCZ, this shift is apparently sufficient to explain the observed association. The equatorward shift in the ITCZ is potentially the result of a relative warming of the Southern Hemisphere in the boreal tropical cyclone season. This more equatorward ITCZ, located over warmer surface waters, presumably explains the more intense Hadley circulation, despite a reduction of the large-scale boreal meridional temperature gradient. Although, these links require further research.

Abstract:The Hadley circulation is a global‐scale atmospheric feature that plays a fundamental role in Earth's climate: its variations primarily affect the tropical and subtropical hydrological cycle, impacting water resources in monsoon regions and vulnerable semi‐arid areas. This article reviews the understanding of the processes that are responsible for its evolution. A key result is that both theory and models support the future expansion of the Hadley circulation under anthropogenic climate change. The Hadley circulation (HC) is a global‐scale atmospheric feature with air descending in the subtropics and ascending in the tropics, which plays a fundamental role in Earth's climate because it transports energy polewards and moisture equatorwards. Theoretically, as a consequence of anthropogenic climate change, the HC is expected to expand polewards, while indications on the HC strength are equivocal, as weakening and strengthening are expected in response to different mechanisms. In fact, there is a general agreement among reanalyses and climate simulations that the HC has significantly widened in the last four decades and it will continue widening in the future, but there is no consensus on past and future changes of the HC strength. Substantial uncertainties are produced by the effects of natural variability, structural deficiencies in climate models and reanalyses, and the influence of other forcing factors, such as anthropogenic aerosols, black carbon, and stratospheric and tropospheric ozone. The global HC can be decomposed into three regional HCs, associated with ascending motion above Equatorial Africa, the Maritime Continent, and Equatorial America, which have evolved differently during the last decades. Climate projections suggest a generalized expansion in the Southern Hemisphere, but a complex regional expansion/contraction pattern in the Northern Hemisphere.

Abstract:Abstract Recent studies have noted a poleward shift in tropical cyclone (TC) lifetime maximum intensity (LMI) location. Whether this observed shift is due to global warming, natural variability, or a combination of both factors remains inconclusive. The western North Pacific (WNP) has been shown in prior research to be the most robust contributor to the observed poleward LMI migration. This study explores interannual and interdecadal climate drivers of WNP LMI location from 1979 to 2018. On interannual time scales, there are more northward-moving TC tracks during El Niño years compared with La Niña years. However, there is substantially smaller variance in the latitudinal distance from TC genesis latitude to LMI latitude than the variance in the TC genesis latitude. Thus, TC genesis El Niño years tend to reach their LMI at a lower latitude given the increased likelihood that they undergo genesis at a lower latitude. On decadal or longer time scales, global warming has contributed to the recent poleward shift of LMI location by causing more northwestward-/northward-moving TC tracks, while the PDO also significantly modulates decadal variability in TC genesis latitude, thus also contributing to LMI latitude changes. Further analysis of the extended period from 1960 to 2018 suggests that the trends in TC LMI latitude and TC tracks are dominated by global warming, and the PDO phase change likely reinforces this trend during 1979–2018. These three leading modes of climate variability (e.g., ENSO, PDO, and global warming) offer a more complete picture of the meridional migration of WNP LMI location on various time scales.

Abstract:The Hadley circulation describes a planetary-scale tropical atmospheric flow, which has a major influence on climate. Contemporary theoretical understanding is based upon angular momentum conservation, the basic dynamical constraint governing the state of the flow pattern. However, despite the degree of success in representing the Hadley circulation, the canonical theoretical model does not treat interactions with other regions, particularly the mid-latitudes. Here, we extend the original model of Held and Hou (1980) to include the influence of mid-latitude large-scale atmospheric dynamics, which we treat using the planetary-scale heat equation with a parameterized poleward heat flux driven by synoptic eddies. The energy flux balance within the Hadley cell includes the poleward heat flux at the poleward edge of the cell, which is controlled by the baroclinic instability of the sub-tropical jet. We find that an increase (decrease) in the poleward heat flux leads to a strengthening (weakening) of tropical convection, driving an equatorward (poleward) shift of the edge of the Hadley cell. Thus, our theoretical solutions suggest that global warming, which can reduce the baroclinicity of the subtropical jet, can lead to the poleward expansion of the Hadley cell due to the change in energy flux balance within it.

The role of tropical and extra-tropical waves in the Hadley circulation

Abstract:The tropical overturning circulation is examined in a moist aquaplanet general circulation model forced using a non-interactive sea surface temperature (SST) distribution that varies between a present-day Earth-like profile and one that is globally uniform. A traditional Hadley Cell (HC)-like flow is observed in all experiments along with the poleward transport of heat and angular momentum. In simulations with non-zero SST gradients, latent heat released from organized convection near the equator sets up a deep tropical cell; midlatitude baroclinic Rossby waves flux heat and angular momentum poleward, reinforcing the thermally direct circulation. As the imposed SST gradient is weakened, the HC transitions from a thermally and eddy-driven regime to one that's completely eddy-driven. When the SST is globally uniform, equatorial waves concentrate precipitation in the tropics and facilitate the lower-level convergence necessary for the ascending branch of the HC. Conventional midlatitude Rossby waves become very weak, but upper-level baroclinicity generates waves that cause equatorward transport of heat and poleward transport of momentum. Moreover, these upper-level waves induce a circulation that opposes the time-mean HC, thus highlighting the role of tropical waves in driving a traditional overturning flow for uniform SSTs. In all cases, anomalies associated with the tropical waves closely resemble those that sum to give the upper-level zonal mean divergent outflow. Through their ability to modulate tropical rainfall and the related latent heating, equatorial waves cause considerable hemispheric asymmetry in the HC and impart synoptic and intraseasonal variability to the tropical overturning circulation.

Abstract:Determination of long-term tropical cyclone (TC) variability is of enormous importance to society; however, changes in TC activity are poorly understood owing to discrepancies among various datasets and limited span of instrumental records. While the increasing intensity and frequency of TCs have been previously documented on a long-term scale using various proxy records, determination of their poleward migration has been based mostly on short-term instrumental data. Here we present a unique tree-ring-based approach for determination of long-term variability in TC activity via forest disturbance rates in northeast Asia (33-45°N). Our results indicate significant long-term changes in TC activity, with increased rates of disturbances in the northern latitudes over the past century. The disturbance frequency was stable over time in the southern latitudes, however. Our findings of increasing disturbance frequency in the areas formerly situated at the edge of TC activity provide evidence supporting the broad relevance of poleward migration of TCs. Our results significantly enhance our understanding of the effects of climate change on TCs and emphasize the need for determination of long-term variation of past TC activity to improve future TC projections.
Influence of Track Changes on the Poleward Shift of LMI Location of Western North Pacific Tropical Cyclones

Abstract:The annual mean latitude at which tropical cyclones (TCs) reach their lifetime maximum intensity (LMI) over the western North Pacific Ocean basin has shifted northward since the early 1980s, and it is suggested that the shift is due to the northward migration of the mean TC formation location. In this study, the TC intensity is simulated with an intensity model to assess the historical records of TC intensity. During the period 1980–2015, the simulated poleward trend in the mean latitude of LMI is 0.44° (10 yr)−1, which agrees well with the one [0.48° (10 yr)−1] derived from the Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) dataset. This suggests that the observed poleward trend in the mean latitude of LMI is physically consistent with changes in the large-scale ocean–atmosphere environment and TC track. This study also demonstrates that the temporal change in the environmental parameters (sea surface temperature, outflow temperature, vertical wind shear, and ocean mixed layer depth) has little influence on the observed shift of the mean LMI latitude. The poleward migration of the mean LMI latitude is mainly due to the TC track shift, which results primarily from the change in the large-scale steering flow.

Abstract:How the Hadley circulation changes in response to global climate change and how its change impacts upon regional and global climates has generated a lot of interest in the literature in the past few years. In this paper, consistent and statistically significant poleward expansion of the Hadley circulation in the past few decades is demonstrated, using independent observational datasets as proxy measures of the Hadley circulation. Both observational outgoing longwave radiation and precipitation datasets show an annual average total poleward expansion of the Hadley cells of about 3.6° latitude. Sea level pressure from observational and reanalysis datasets show smaller magnitudes of poleward expansion, of about 1.2° latitude. Ensemble general circulation model simulations forced by observed time-varying sea surface temperatures were found to generate a total poleward expansion of about 1.23° latitude. Possible mechanisms behind the changes in the horizontal extent of the Hadley circulation are discussed.

Abstract:Idealized experiments performed with the Community Atmospheric Model 5.3 indicate that the width and strength of the Hadley circulation (HC) are sensitive to the location of sea surface temperature (SST) increases. The HC edge shifts poleward in response to SST increases over the subtropical regions near and on the equatorward flank of the HC edge, and shifts equatorward in response to warming over the tropical area except for the western Pacific Ocean and Indian Ocean. The HC is strengthened in response to SST increases over the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ) and is weakened in response to SST increases over the subsidence branch of the HC in the subtropics. Tropical SST increases off the ITCZ tend to weaken the HC in the corresponding hemisphere and strengthen the HC in the opposite hemisphere. These results could be used to explain the simulated HC changes induced by recent SST variations, and it is estimated that more than half of the SST-induced HC widening in 1980–2014 is caused by changes in the spatial pattern of SST.

Abstract:The poleward migration of the annual mean location of tropical cyclone (TC) lifetime maximum intensity (LMI) has been identified in the major TC basins of the globe over the past 30 years, which is particularly robust over the western North Pacific (WNP). This study has revealed that this poleward migration consists mainly of weak TCs (with maximum sustained surface wind speed less than 33 m s−1) over the WNP. Results show that the location of LMI of weak TCs has migrated about 1° latitude poleward per decade since 1980, while such a trend is considerably smaller for intense TCs. This is found to be linked to a significant decreasing trend of TC genesis in the southern WNP and a significant increasing trend in the northwestern WNP over the past 30 years. It is shown that the greater sea surface temperature (SST) warming at higher latitudes associated with global warming and its associated changes in the large-scale circulation favor more TCs to form in the northern WNP and fewer but stronger TCs to form in the southern WNP.
Impact of the Winter Regional Hadley Circulation over Western Pacific on the Frequency of Following Summer Tropical Cyclone Landfalling in China

Abstract:The poleward migration of tropical cyclone (TC) activity in recent years has been linked to the expansion of the Hadley circulation (HC). Here, we investigate the impact of the winter regional HC over the western Pacific (WPHC) on the frequency of following summer landfalling TC (LTC) in China. Results show that interannual variation of the LTC frequency has a very close connection with the northern WPHC edge (WPHCE). After removing the El Niño–Southern Oscillation signal, there still exists a significant correlation between them. When the winter WPHCE shifts poleward, the associated lower-level southwesterly (easterly) wind anomalies over the subtropical western Pacific (tropical central-eastern Pacific) induce sea surface temperature (SST) warming (cooling) anomalies therein via suppressing (enhancing) upward surface heat flux. In turn, the SST warming (cooling) excites an anomalous cyclonic (anticyclonic) circulation to its west via a Rossby wave response, thus maintaining the southwesterly (easterly) wind anomalies. In addition, the negative rainfall anomalies over the tropical central-eastern Pacific induced by negative SST anomalies can stimulate an anomalous intensive Walker circulation with anomalous upward motion around the tropical western Pacific. Through this positive air–sea interaction, the winter WPHCE signal would be preserved in the ocean and maintained to the succeeding summer, then favoring LTC genesis landward by decreasing the vertical wind shear and increasing the low-level vorticity and midlevel humidity. Meanwhile, anomalous midtropospheric easterly winds over the subtropics are favorable for steering more LTCs toward China's coast. This study suggests that the winter WPHCE variation is a potential predictor for the prediction of the following summer LTC activity over China. Significance Statement Tropical cyclone (TC) is one of the most catastrophic high-impact weather events, which may cause great casualties and severe property losses over the coastal areas, particularly when it makes landfall. Previous research studies have related the poleward migration trend of TC locations to the Hadley circulation (HC) expansion. Compared to the long-term trend, the magnitude of the year-to-year change of the HC edge (HCE) is even larger, leading to a stronger impact on the TC activity. A recent study has suggested that the northern HCE over the western Pacific (WPHCE) in boreal winter exhibits a notable interannual variability. In this study, we reveal that the wintertime WPHCE has a very close connection with the landfalling TC (LTC) frequency over China in the following summer. After removing the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) signal, there still exists a significant positive correlation between them. Observational evidence and numerical model experiments consistently confirm that this time-lagged association is attributable to the air–sea interaction processes in the tropical Pacific. Thus, the results of this study could provide an additional predictor besides ENSO to improve understanding of the LTC activity in China.

Abstract:Analyzing the spatial-temporal changes in tropical cyclone (TC) tracks in the east China coastal ocean (ECCO) to quantify the magnitude of poleward and landward migration of TCs is of significant importance for coastal disaster mitigation and planning due to its susceptibility to the impacts of TCs. In this study, the TCs that affected the ECCO from 1949 to 2022 are classified into three typical types of tracks using the k-means clustering method, mass moments, and track interpolation based on TC location, shape, and intensity information. Type 1 is a northwestward track, Type 2 is a northwest to northeast-turning track, and Type 3 is a northwest to northeastturning offshore track. Type 1 tracks mainly make landfall in southern China, while Type 2 predominantly makes landfall in eastern China. Moreover, the proportion of Type 1 decreases while their landfall percentage increases over time, and the proportion of Type 2 tracks is increasing. The probability of TC effects on the eastern and northern parts of the ECCO is increasing, and the boundary where the TC center reaches after landfall is shifting landward. During the period from 1994 to 2022, there has been a significant migration in TC tracks, with the mean centroid of the TCs affecting the ECCO shifting westward by 0.66 degrees in longitude and northward by 1.26 degrees in latitude, which means the magnitude of the poleward shift is about twice that of the landward shift. This migration appears to have been pre-conditioned by a combined influence of a weakening westward steering flow, reduced vertical wind shear, and warmer sea surface temperature Our findings provide valuable insights into the longitudinal and latitudinal migration of TC tracks and have important implications for disaster prevention, mitigation planning, and the adjustment of crucial coastal protection zones in the ECCO and similar regions around the globe.
Interpreting seasonal and interannual Hadley cell descending edge migrations via the cell-mean Rossby number

Abstract:The poleward extent of Earth's zonal-mean Hadley cells varies across seasons and years, which would be nice to capture in a simple theory. A plausible candidate, from Hill et al. (2022), combines the conventional two-layer, quasi-geostrophic, baroclinic instability-based framework with a less conventional assumption: that each cell's upper-branch zonal winds are suitably captured by a single, cell-wide Rossby number, with meridional variations in the local Rossby number neglected. We test this theory against ERA5 reanalysis data, finding that it captures both seasonal and interannual variations in the Hadley cell zonal winds and poleward extent rather well. For the seasonal cycle of the NH cell only, this requires empirically lagging the prediction by one month, for reasons unclear to us. In all cases, the bulk Rossby number value that yields the most accurate zonal wind fields is approximately equal to the actual cell-mean value. Variations in these cell-mean Rossby numbers, in turn, predominantly drive variations in each cell's poleward extent. All other terms matter much less -- including the subtropical static stability, which, by increasing under global warming, is generally considered the predominant driver of future Hadley cell expansion. It thus seems plausible that warming-driven changes in the cell-mean Rossby number, which have yet to be rigorously explored, could meaningfully influence the mean and spread in projections of future Hadley cell expansion.

Abstract:The Hadley circulation (or Hadley cell) is traditionally described as a large-scale atmospheric circulation phenomenon driven by differential heating of the Earth surface: warm, moist air rises near the equator, diverges poleward in the upper troposphere, and subsides in the subtropics. In this article, the mechanism of the Hadley circulation is revisited and a new model is provided to explain its mechanism. The new model is based on a form of the atmospheric dynamic equation which substitutes pressure with temperature and density; thereby categorizing weather systems into thermal and dynamic systems. Such classification is useful for explaining large-scale weather systems such as the Hadley cell. The proposed explanation for the mechanism of the Hadley circulation argues that subtropical highs are the driving force of the Hadley cell, rather than the conventionally-believed ITCZ (Intertropical Convergence Zone). To support our theory, we analyze the atmospheric air density flux divergence with the results from the Community Earth System Model (CESM) and derive a new continuity equation by adding source/sink terms, in which evaporation serves as the air-mass source, and precipitation (condensation) as the air-mass sink. Results found that the equatorial easterlies could be linked to the solar diurnal cycle, demonstrating that the trade wind can be generated by the solar diurnal cycle, especially in the spring and fall seasons, as well as from the equatorial branch of the subtropical high.

Abstract:The development of large‐scale vortex dynamo during tropical cyclogenesis through the mutual intensification of primary and secondary circulation in terms of helical evolution is well studied. However, the influence of atmospheric helicity on ocean surface heat and moisture fluxes associated with tropical cyclone (TC) evolution is yet to be understood. At its development stage, the heat and moisture flux from the ocean surface increases with the increase in intensity of the TC. This time, TC‐Ocean interaction works in a positive feedback mechanism. However, after a particular stage, the very intense wind of the TC causes strong turbulent mixing in the underlying ocean. Hence, the upper ocean layer temperature starts decreasing, leading to a decrease in heat and moisture flux exchange to the TC. We have analyzed the emergence of vortex helical structure in TC and the role of helicity in modulating surface heat and moisture fluxes. The result shows that helical development is associated with the axisymetrization of the vertical velocity and diabatic heating at the middle and upper troposphere. There is no definite TC intensity at which the initiation of negative feedback of TC‐upper ocean interaction occurs. However, the increase in helicity above 200 × 10−2 ms−2 reversed the TC‐ocean interaction trend. Therefore, TC helicity evolution and upper ocean interaction are essential to understand TC evolution.

Abstract:The latitude-altitude structure of the double intertropical convergence zone (DITCZ), its zonal variations, annual cycle and interannual variability over tropical oceans, which were least explored so far, are investigated using the long-term (2006–2018) joint analysis of spaceborne cloud radar and lidar observations that can profile all types of clouds. In contrast to satellite imager observations, this analysis can unambiguously discriminate the DITCZ core and the cirrus outflow emanating from them, which enables the characterization of DITCZ features, including their vertical structure, width and strength even when the equatorial region separating the DITCZ bands has overcast clouds or one of the bands is weak. The role of observed surface wind divergence (SWD) and sea surface temperature (SST) in the genesis and annual migration of the DITCZ bands as well as the ability of vertical wind obtained from reanalysis in capturing the observed DITCZ features are evaluated. The DITCZ occurs over the central Pacific throughout the year, while its occurrence is mainly limited to March-April over the eastern Pacific and the Atlantic and in December over the Indian Ocean. Annual variations of the occurrence, vertical extent, strength and latitudinal positions of the DITCZ bands are mainly driven by the combined effect of SWD and SST variations. The significant differential cloud radiative heating between the equator and the DITCZ bands, derived from the profiles of cloud water content, suggests that it would feedback in enhancing the middle and upper tropospheric wind convergence and downdraft over the equator and contribute to sustain the DITCZ.

Abstract:The Hurricane Weather Research and Forecasting (HWRF) system was used in an idealized framework to gain a fundamental understanding of the variability in tropical cyclone (TC) structure and intensity prediction that may arise due to vertical diffusion. The modeling system uses the Medium-Range Forecast parameterization scheme. Flight-level data collected by a NOAA WP-3D research aircraft during the eyewall penetration of category 5 Hurricane Hugo (1989) at an altitude of about 450-500 m and Hurricane Allen (1980) were used as the basis to best match the modeled eddy diffusivities with wind speed. While reduction of the eddy diffusivity to a quarter of its original value produced the best match with the observations, such a reduction revealed a significant decrease in the height of the inflow layer as well which, in turn, drastically affected the size and intensity changes in the modeled TC. The cross-isobaric flow (inflow) was observed to be stronger with the decrease in the inflow depth. Stronger inflow not only increased the spin of the storm, enhancing the generalized Coriolis term in the equations of motion for tangential velocity, but also resulted in enhanced equivalent potential temperature in the boundary layer, a stronger and warmer core, and, subsequently, a stronger storm. More importantly, rapid acceleration of the inflow not only produced a stronger outflow at the top of the inflow layer, more consistent with observations, but also a smaller inner core that was less than half the size of the original.
