Abstract:<p>Water remediation techniques have been extensively investigated due to the increasing threats of soluble pollutants posed on the human health, ecology and sustainability. Confronted with the complex composition matrix of wastewater, the simultaneous elimination of coexisting multi-pollutants remains a great challenge due to their different physicochemical properties. By integrating multi-contaminants elimination processes into one unit operation, simultaneous decontamination attracted more and more attention under the consideration of versatile applications and economical benefits. In this review, the state-of-art simultaneous decontamination methods were systematically summarized as chemical precipitation, adsorption, photocatalysis, oxidation-reduction, biological removal and membrane filtration. Their applications, mechanisms, mutual interactions, sustainability and recyclability were outlined and discussed in detail. Finally, the prospects and opportunities for future research were proposed for further development of simultaneous decontamination. This work could provide guidelines for the design and fabrication of well-organized simultaneous decontaminating system.</p>

Abstract:Global water demand and environmental concerns related to climate change require industries to develop high-efficiency wastewater treatment methods to remove pollutants. Likewise, toxic pollutants present in wastewater negatively affect the environment and human health, requiring effective treatment. Although conventional treatment processes remove carbon and nutrients, they are insufficient to remove pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and plasticizers. Electrochemical processes effectively remove pollutants from wastewater through the mineralization of non-biodegradable pollutants with consequent conversion into biodegradable compounds. Its advantages include easy operation, versatility, and short reaction time. In this way, this review initially provides a global water scenario with a view to the future. It comprises global demand, treatment methods, and pollution of water resources, addressing various contaminants such as heavy metals, nutrients, organic compounds, and emerging contaminants. Subsequently, the fundamentals of electrochemical treatments are presented as well as electrochemical treatments, highlighting the latest studies involving electrocoagulation, electroflocculation, electroflotation, capacitive deionization and its derivatives, eletrodeionization, and electrochemical advanced oxidation process. Finally, the challenges and perspectives were discussed. In this context, electrochemical processes have proven promising and effective for the treatment of water and wastewater, allowing safe reuse practices and purification with high contaminant removal.
Combination of electrochemical advanced oxidation and biotreatment for wastewater treatment and soil remediation

Abstract:The global concern surrounding the advancement of methods for treating wastewater and polluted soil has markedly increased over time. While electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs) and biotreatments are commonly employed technologies for remediating wastewater and polluted soil, their widespread adoption is hindered by their limitations, which include high costs associated with EAOPs and prolonged remediation time of biotreatments. In the review, we provided an overview of EAOP technology and biotreatment, emphasizing the critical aspects involved in building a combined system. This review systematically evaluates recent research that combines EAOPs with bioremediation for treating wastewater or contaminated soil as pretreatment or post-treatment process. Research findings suggest that the combined treatment method represents a promising and competitive technology that can overcome some of the limitations of individual treatments. Additionally, we discussed the potential applications of this technology in varying levels of wastewater and soil pollution, as well as the underlying combination mechanisms.

Abstract:High energy input and chemicals additions are typically needed to deal with persistent pollutants, organic and inorganic, and organometallic complexes in wastewater. Particularly, organometallic complexes decrease the removal efficiency for other pollutants being treated with conventional technologies, which can lead to high operational costs and residues formation. The improperly treated wastewater contains nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus), heavy metals, and persistent organics, which should be removed or recovered before discharging. Electrochemical technologies can achieve concomitant removal of persistent pollutants and resource recovery from wastewater, with the benefits of low chemical input, cost-effectiveness and reduced water consumption. In this review, we provide an overview of electrochemical technologies for the separation of organics and inorganics and their subsequent recovery. The focus is placed into electrodeposition, electrodialysis, membrane electrolysis, electrochemical oxidation, capacitive deionization, and bioelectrochemical systems. The main challenges considered at present are i) the cost and longevity of the materials, ii) the process efficiency and selectivity and iii) the complexity of the wastewater matrices. In this review it is projected that in the near future, the electrochemical separation and recovery of organics and inorganics will be preferred, as electrochemical cells powered by renewable energy can serve for decentralized and off-grid treatment approaches.

Abstract:Electrocoagulation (EC), an newly arising electrochemical technology, gained more advances than other electrochemical technologies on wastewater treatment in recent years, including the absence of secondary chemical pollution, simplicity of equipment, and formation of large flocs than traditional chemical coagulation. Combined with existing treatment methods, such as membrane processes, adsorption and activated sludge, EC helps encounter existing issues and enhance the efficiency of current technologies. This paper reviews recent studies on the integration of EC and other technologies to illustrate the performance of the combined systems, especially the role played by EC. Then the advantages and the limitations of the integrated systems are assessed, as well as the challenges and future directions are discussed. Considering the growing global concern over water scarcity and environmental degradation, the application of EC-integrated systems represents a viable and indispensable solution for sustainable water management. This literature review intends to be helpful to researchers, investors, and government officials working and making long-range planning process on wastewater treatments.

Abstract:Constructed wetland (CW) is an effective ecological technology to treat water pollution and has the significant advantages of high impact resistance, simple construction process, and low maintenance cost. However, under extreme conditions such as low temperature, high salt concentration, and multiple types of pollutants, some bottlenecks exist, including the difficulty in improving operating efficiency and the low pollutant removal rate. Microbial electrochemical technology is an emerging clean energy technology and has the similar structure and pollutant removal mechanism to CW. Microbial electrochemistry combined with CW can improve the overall removal effect of pollutants in wetlands. This review summarizes characterization methods of microbial electrochemistry-enhanced constructed wetland systems, construction methods of different composite systems, mechanisms of single and composite systems, and removal effects of composite systems on different pollutants in water bodies. Based on the shortcomings of existing studies, the potential breakthroughs in microbial electrochemistry-enhanced constructed wetlands are proposed for developing the optimization solution of constructed wetlands.

Abstract:This review explores the potential and challenges of combining electrochemical, especially electrocoagulation (EC) process, with various - wastewater treatment methods such as membranes, chemical treatments, biological methods, and oxidation processes to enhance pollutant removal and reduce costs. It emphasizes the advantages of using electrochemical processes as a pretreatment step, including increased volume and improved quality of permeate water, mitigation of membrane fouling, and lower environmental impact. Pilot-scale studies are discussed to validate the effectiveness of combined EC processes, particularly for industrial wastewater. Factors such as electrode materials, coating materials, and the integration of a third process are discussed as potential avenues for improving the environmental sustainability and cost-effectiveness of the combined EC processes. This review also discusses factors for improvement and explores the EC process combined with Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOP). The conclusion highlights the need for combined EC processes, which include reducing electrode consumption, evaluating energy efficiency, and conducting pilot-scale investigations under continuous flow conditions. Furthermore, it emphasizes future research on electrode materials and technology commercialization. Overall, this review underscores the importance of combined EC processes in meeting the demand for clean water resources and emphasizes the need for further optimization and implementation in industrial applications.

Abstract:Electrochemical methods can enhance the rate and efficiency of environmental interface processes through the directional transfer and precise regulation of electrons. Its extraordinary characteristics and advantages can be applied in water treatment, which is an important technical means to crack water crisis and water pollution. In the past 10 years, electrochemical water treatment technology has been developed rapidly and tends towards electrode efficiency, process coupling as well as low carbon and green development. It will further focus on important directions such as functional electrode material design, high-efficiency reactor and combined process development, and directional transfer and recovery of resources and energy in the future. This review describes the current research status and practical applications of electrochemical technology in different kinds of wastewater treatment, while analyzing the basic working principles of different water treatment technologies of electrochemistry. Despite a generally environmentally friendly and efficient treatment method, electrochemistry as a water treatment technology still has certain drawbacks. This review suggests that future research should be strengthened regarding the reduction of energy consumption of the overall water treatment system, the overall system cost should be reduced based on various aspects of the application, and attempts should be made to combine the application with traditional processes.

Abstract:Abstract: Glutamic acid decarboxylase activity associated with cerebral blood vessels appears to be part of a specific cerebrovascular system involving γ‐aminobutyric acid. This activity was characterized kinetically and pharmacologically and compared with that in brain and several nonneuronal tissues. Formation of γ‐aminobutyric acid from [14C]glutamate was measured in a soluble extract of pia‐arachnoid blood vessels isolated from bovine brain. The vascular activity was like brain glutamate decarboxylase in that it required pyridoxal phosphate, was completely inhibited by aminooxyacetic acid, and had a similar affinity for glutamate. Cerebrovascular decarboxylase activity differed, however, from brain decarboxylase in that it was less sensitive to sulfhydryl reagents, was stimulated by 3‐mercaptopropionic and cysteic acids, and was competitively inhibited by cysteine sulfinic acid. The glutamate decarboxylase activity of the cerebral vessels was similar to that in renal cortex and mesenteric blood vessels in its responses to sulfhydryl reagents and 3‐mercaptopropionic acid. These findings are consistent with previous suggestions of a nonneuronal form of the enzyme and offer the possibility that synthesis of γ‐aminobutyric acid in cerebral blood vessels can be manipulated independently from that in neuronal tissue.

Abstract:A comprehensive review has been organized to summarize the recent advancements in built‐in electric field engineering within photocatalysts, aimed at enhancing the photocatalytic degradation of pollutants in wastewater. The photocatalysis technique shows significant potential for wastewater degradation; however, the rapid recombination of photogenerated holes and electrons severely limits its photocatalytic efficiency. This situation necessitates the development of effective strategies to tackle these challenges. One well‐documented approach is built‐in electric field engineering in heterojunctions or composites, which has been shown to enhance electron transfer and thereby reduce the recombination of electrons and holes. This strategy has proven highly effective in significantly improving photocatalytic activity for the degradation of pollutants in wastewater. In this context, we summarize recent advancements in built‐in electric field engineering in photocatalysts, highlighting the fundamentals and modifications of this approach, as well as its positive impact on photocatalytic performance in the degradation of wastewater pollutants.

Abstract:The coexistence of various types of pollutants in water is a major concern worldwide, and it is difficult to remove them simultaneously using conventional or single treatment techniques. The pursuit of effective and sustainable methods for treating wastewater has prompted the development of a combination of technologies for synergy. One of the most common combinations is to integrate adsorption and Fenton-based Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs). Their combination can overcome the drawbacks of each technique, leading to synergy in removal efficiency. This is evidenced by the fact that (1) adsorbents can efficiently adsorb some organic and inorganic substances in wastewater, even those hydroxyl radicals that find it difficult to oxidize or whose existence may reduce the efficacy of AOPs; (2) some intermediates of AOPs may be resistant to oxidation, and can be adsorbed for higher total mineralization of these recalcitrant contaminants; (3) some adsorbents, such as carbonaceous materials and transmission metal-based materials, can act as a catalyst for AOPs, enhancing the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS); (4) the formation of ROS may also increase the adsorption capacity of adsorbents in some cases; and (5) the combination is beneficial to the regeneration of adsorbents by degrading the adsorbed pollutants. This article reviews the principles, mechanisms, recent advancements, and challenges associated with both the single and combined applications of adsorption and Fenton-based AOPs in wastewater treatment. The synergistic effects of combining these approaches have also been investigated. This study aims to provide insights into the potential of these technologies to address emerging challenges in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:This review proposes an insight into the prospects of electrochemistry for the treatment of highly concentrated effluents in three sections. The first section of this review presents an overview of electrochemical water treatment strategies adapted to these very specific waste streams, including the influence of operating conditions, electrode materials and processes (with special emphasis on anodic oxidation, electro-Fenton and electrocoagulation). The second part provides the engineering parameters to ensure successful upscaling of electrochemical processes in terms of modeling mass transport, charge transfer and hydrodynamics, reactor designs and energy requirements. This section also addresses process combinations, where electrochemistry could complement traditional methods of treatment, in order to improve the overall efficiency of the integrated system. Finally, the last section focuses on the nature, characteristics and challenges inherent to highly concentrated wastewater, divided into five categories: industrial wastewater (e.g., pharmaceutical, electronics, chemical, food-processing), hypersaline effluents (e.g., reverse osmosis concentrates), solutions contaminated with a mixture of organic and inorganic contaminants (e.g., leachate, mining), highly viscous solution (or non-Newtonian liquid) (e.g., sludge) and solutions of high chemical oxygen demand load but with low pollutant content (e.g., from soil washing).

Abstract:Wastewater pollution is severe, with various refractory compounds extensively used and discharged into sewage, posing risks to the environment and human health. Electrocatalytic technologies including direct and indirect electrocatalytic oxidation, electrocatalytic reduction, and electro-Fenton processes offer advantages such as high efficiency, ease of control, and minimal secondary pollution. This review aims to systematically introduce the principles, current research status, advantages, and disadvantages of various electrocatalytic processes used for wastewater treatment, with a focus on the electrode materials, operational parameters, and cost analysis of various electrocatalytic technologies. It also provides new insights into efficient electrode materials for future electrocatalytic technologies in treating refractory wastewater.

Abstract:Nowadays, water pollution and freshwater scarcity are two of the most significant environmental problems in many parts of the world, and hence development of effective, economic and environmental-friendly methods for water treatment to provide clean water and increase the freshwater supply is of great necessity. Due to the advantages of enhanced mass transfer and sufficiently exposed active sites over traditional parallel-plate and flow-by configurations, the electrochemical flow-through systems have emerged as a promising technology for tackling such global challenges, and are currently being actively explored for various water treatment processes including water desalination, water purification (e.g., removal of heavy metals, inorganic contaminants, or organic contaminants), water disinfection, resource recovery, and detection of contaminants. Over the past decades, there has been a fast increase of research regarding the applications of electrochemical flow-through systems in the water treatment processes and remarkable advances have been made. This review is intended to summarize such progress and highlight the key achievements. In-depth analysis of the functional mechanisms of the electrochemical flow-through systems in each of the applications was presented. This article should be of value in promoting electrochemical flow-through systems to develop into a competitive choice for tackling multiple water-related issues.

Abstract:It is a long-pursued goal to develop electrified water treatment technology that can remove contaminants without byproduct formation. This study unveiled the overlooked multifunctionality of electro-Fenton (EF) and induced EF (I-EF) processes to remove organics, pathogens, and phosphate in one step without halogenated byproduct formation. The EF and I-EF processes used a sacrificial anode or an induced electrode to generate Fe2+ to activate H2O2 produced from a gas diffusion cathode fed by naturally diffused air. We used experimental and kinetic modeling approaches to illustrate that the •OH generation and radical speciation during EF were not impacted by chloride. More importantly, reactive chlorine species were quenched by H2O2, which eliminated the formation of halogenated byproducts. When applied in treating septic wastewater, the EF process removed >80% COD, >50% carbamazepine (as representative trace organics), and >99% phosphate at a low energy consumption of 0.37 Wh/L. The EF process also demonstrated broad-spectrum disinfection activities in removing and inactivating Escherichia coli, Enterococcus durans, and model viruses MS2 and Phi6. In contrast to electrochemical oxidation (EO) that yielded mg/L level byproducts to achieve the same degree of treatment, EF did not generate byproducts (chlorate, perchlorate, trihalomethanes, and haloacetic acids). The I-EF carried over all the advantages of EF and exhibited even faster kinetics in disinfection and carbamazepine removal with 50–80% less sludge production. Last, using septic wastewater treatment as a technical niche, we demonstrated that iron sludge formation is predictable and manageable, clearing roadblocks toward on-site water treatment applications.

Abstract:Disinfection, a vital barrier against pathogenic microorganisms, is crucial in halting the spread of waterborne diseases. Electrochemical methods have been extensively researched and implemented for the inactivation of pathogenic microorganisms from water and wastewater, primarily owing to their simplicity, efficiency, and eco-friendliness. This review succinctly outlined the core mechanisms of electrochemical disinfection (ED) and systematically examined the factors influencing its efficacy, including anode materials, system conditions, and target species. Additionally, the practical application of ED in water and wastewater treatment was comprehensively reviewed. Case studies involving various scenarios such as drinking water, hospital wastewater, black water, rainwater, and ballast water provided concrete instances of the expansive utility of ED. Finally, coupling ED with other technologies and the resulting synergies were introduced as pivotal foundations for subsequent engineering advancements.

Abstract:Aiming at the practical wastewater treatment in the process of pickling production, the removal efficiency and energy efficiency of the method were studied by using combinedly the methods of electro catalytic oxidation, electro flocculation and external magnetic field. The results show that under the same conditions, the removal method with the electromagnetic repulsion field synergy is better than that without the magnetic field, by which the COD (chemical oxygen demand) and ammonia nitrogen removal efficiency are increased by 20% and 30% respectively, and the energy consumption is significantly reduced. To a certain extent, the method overcomes the shortcomings of high investment and high operation cost, and improves the operation and maintenance difficulties. It is a quiet suitable and efficient method for treating high salt and high organic wastewater in salt pickling process. The research shows that the electromagnetic synergistic method can be used in the treatment of refractory wastewater, and can reduce the secondary pollution as well.

Abstract:Traditional physicochemical and biological techniques, as well as advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), are often inadequate, ineffective, or expensive for industrial water reclamation. Within this context, the electrochemical technologies have found a niche where they can become dominant in the near future, especially for the abatement of biorefractory substances. In this critical review, some of the most promising electrochemical tools for the treatment of wastewater contaminated by organic pollutants are discussed in detail with the following goals: (1) to present the fundamental aspects of the selected processes; (2) to discuss the effect of both the main operating parameters and the reactor design on their performance; (3) to critically evaluate their advantages and disadvantages; and (4) to forecast the prospect of their utilization on an applicable scale by identifying the key points to be further investigated. The review is focused on the direct electrochemical oxidation, the indirect electrochemical oxidation mediated by electrogenerated active chlorine, and the coupling between anodic and cathodic processes. The last part of the review is devoted to the critical assessment of the reactors that can be used to put these technologies into practice.

Abstract:With the acceleration of industrialization,the types and discharge of wastewater are increasing,which has caused serious harm to the natural environment and human society.Therefore,it is urgent to develop economical and efficient wastewater treatment technology.Bio-electro-Fenton(BEF)system is a water treatment technology which combines bioelectrochemical system with Fenton oxidation process.As a high efficiency,green and energy saving approach,BEF system is attracting a growing interest recently.Here,the work principle of BEF system was introduced.Main factors influencing the properties of anode and cathode were discussed,including the extracellular electron transport process of microorganisms,anode materials,cathode materials,catalysts of Fenton reaction and system operating conditions.The application of BEF system in various wastewater(dye wastewater,pharmaceutical wastewater,landfill leachate,coal chemical wastewater and swine wastewater)treatment was summarized.Finally,the current challenges and future research directions of BEF system were pointed out,including developing the efficient electrode materials and catalysts,coupling with other water treatment processes,reducing the cost of membrane materials and conducting pilot studies,in order to support its further development.

Abstract:Due to the increase of emerging contaminants in water, how to use new treatment technology to make up for the defects of traditional wastewater treatment method has become one of the research hotspots at present. Intimate coupling of photocatalysis and biodegradation (ICPB) as a novel wastewater treatment method, which combines the advantages of biological treatment and photocatalytic reactions, has shown a great potential as a low-cost, environmental friendly and sustainable treatment technology. The system mainly consists of photocatalytic materials, porous carriers and biofilm. The key principle of ICPB is to transform bio-recalcitrant pollutants into biodegradable products by photocatalysis on the surface of porous carriers. The biodegradable products were mineralized simultaneously through the biofilm inside the carriers. Because of the protection of the carriers, the microorganism can remain active even under the UV-light, the mechanical force of water flow or the attack of free radicals. ICPB breaks the traditional concept that photocatalytic reaction and biodegradation must be separated in different reactors, improves the purification capacity of sewage and saves the cost. This review summarizes the recent advances of ICPB photocatalysts, carriers and biofilm being applied, and focuses on the mechanisms and reactor configurations which is particularly novel. Furthermore, the possible ongoing researches on ICPB are also put forward. This review will provide a valuable insight into the design and application of ICPB in environment and energy field.
