Abstract:This research work was performed to investigate the possibility of using composted herb residues (C1), co-composted sewage sludge with sawdust (C2), co-composted pig manure with sawdust (C3), and co-composted pig manure with spent mushroom (C4) in the production of horticultural seedlings to replace part of peat in the growing media. The proportions of each compost in the mixtures elaborated with peat were 50%, 75%, and 100% (v/v), respectively. The substrate of 100% commercial peat was used as the control. First, some physical, physical-chemical, and chemical properties of these substrates were determined. Second, four kinds of plants tomato, cucumber, bermudagrass, and impatiens were used to evaluate the possibility of different composts to replace part of peat. The seed germination rate, fresh weight and nutrient concentrations of seedling were then measured. We found that the physical, physical-chemical and chemical properties of these substrates were statistically influenced by the type and the proportion of compost in the substrates. The substrates elaborated with C1 and C2 showed adequate physical and chemical properties for their use as substrate in horticultural seedlings production. The highest germination of cucumber, tomato, bermudagrass and impatiens all occurred at C1 based substrate. Seedling grown in the C1 and C2 based substrate reached better growth and nutrition than peat. Our results suggested that the C1 and C2 were good alternative to peat-based substrate for seedling production, especially at the rate of 75% and 100% of C1 and 50% of C2, which have shown beneficial effects on the seedling production of cucumber, tomato, bermudagrass and impatiens compared to the control. However, C3 and C4 were not always adequately used in substituting expensive peat.

Abstract:In this experiment,the effects of four substrates on growth of stock (Lagenaria leucantha Rusby.,L.siceraria Standl.)and watermelon grafted seedling.It was found that the stock seedling was strong with low hypocotyl length,and the leaf growth rate of graft seedling was high when cultivated in 'Golden 3' and 'Golden 1' substrates,which were ideal substrates.The graft seedling showed low disease rate and high survival rate when cultured in 'Zhongci 1' substrate,but it was difficult to manage the water.The seed germination rate of stock in 'Fafard' substrate was higher than other three ones,but it was necessary to add fertilizer in middle and late growth stage for the lack of nutrition.

Abstract:The effects of nine media on the survival rate and growth situation of regenerated Rhododendron hybrids 'Donator' plantlets in tissue culture after transplantation were studied.The results showed that the survival rates of the plantlets grown in the media of peat and peat:perlite(V:V=1:1) were higher than that of those in the other seven media,making 95.4%and 94.4%respectively,and there was no significant difference between the two media.After being transplanted in these nine media,the stem length,length and width of the third to fifth leaves from top and fresh weight of per shoot of the plantlets in the peat medium were extremely different from those in the other media.A number of growth parameters of plantlets transplanted into the peat and peat '.perlite(V:V=1:1) media in the trial were better than those of the plantlets transplanted into the other seven media.
Effects of steel slag mixed substrate on rooting of Hydrangea macrophylla cuttings

Abstract:To investigate the effect of steel slag used as substrate on the rooting of Hydrangea macrophylla cuttings, and to develop a new mixed substrate that can partially replace conventional cutting substrates and realize the high-efficient utilization of solid waste, we examined the physical and chemical properties of different mixed substrates containing 10% (T1), 20% (T2), 30% (T3), and 40% (T4) volume fractions of steel slag, and investigated the rooting of H. macrophylla 'Red Beauty' cuttings growing on these substrates, with conventional cutting substrates (peat and perlite) as the control (CK). The results showed that pH value, electrical conductivity, and bulk density of the mixed substrates were significantly higher than those of CK. The aeration porosity of T2 was higher than other treatments, while the total porosity and water holding porosity differed little from others. Both fresh weight and dry weight of all the four treatments were higher than those of CK, with stem diameter being higher than that of CK (except T4), plant height showing no significant difference compared to CK (except T4), and leaf chlorophyll content being significantly lower than CK. Root length ranked as T2>CK>T1>T3>T4, the root surface area and root volume both ranked as T2>T1>CK>T4>T3, the root tip ranked as T2>CK>T1>T4>T3. Both average root diameter and root activity were significantly higher than that of CK, with the highest value being observed in T2. Soluble sugar content in the leaves of T2 was the highest, followed by T4, T3, CK, and T1. The weight ranking of root growth indices was root activity > average root diameter > root volume > root surface area > root tip number > root length. Redundancy analysis indicated that pH value, electrical conductivity, aeration porosity, and water holding porosity of substrates were key factors influencing root growth and development of cuttings. Our results suggested that substrates mixed with 10% to 40% steel slag could be used for H. macrophylla cutting propagation, and 20% (T2) being the best one because it could significantly improve the survival rate, growth status, and root development of cuttings. Steel slag would be a novel substrate to partially replace conventional unrenewable substrates such as peat and perlite for flower seedling propagation, which could reduce agricultural production cost and provide a high-value utilization way of industry solid waste.

Abstract:Automating vegetable seedling transplanting has led to labor-saving opportunities and improved productivity. Some changes in seedling agronomy are necessary for efficient transplanting. In this study, the local nursery substrates were added with the herbaceous peat, the sphagnum peat, and the coir peat, respectively. Effects of the new compound substrates were investigated on the seedling growth qualities and the root substrate strength. In the results, we found that the addition of three compound mediums significantly affected the physiochemical properties of the original substrates. Under the same conditions of cultivating seedlings, appropriate additions of new compounds promoted the seedling growth. Moreover, deficient or excessive additions inhibited the growing development of seedlings and their roots. The corresponding additions also improved the structural characteristics of the root lumps. Compared with the two other compounds, the nursery substrates added with the sphagnum peat were optimized in contribution to the seedling qualities and the root substrate strengths. As the local substrate and the sphagnum peat were mixed at a volume ratio of 2:1, the dry matter accumulation of seedlings was 2.18 times more than the original. Their root lumps had the best consolidation strength. This new compound of substrates may be an effective application for the necessary qualities of seedlings for automatic transplanting.

Abstract:Commercial forest plantations in Chile are dominated by pine (Pinus radiata) and eucalyptus (Eucalyptus globulus). Tree bark is the main by-product of the forestry industry and has low value, but great potential for use as an agricultural substrate. However, the direct use of bark fibers may cause plant phytotoxicity due to the presence of polyphenolic and other compounds. This study aims to evaluate the physicochemical properties of E. globulus and P. radiata bark after water extraction treatments. The phytotoxicity of the resulting extracted bark alone and that mixed with commercial substrates (coconut fiber, moss, peat, and composted pine) at different ratios (25 to 75 wt%) were assessed using the Munoo-Liisa vitality index (MLVI) test. For all treatments, the seed germination and growth of radish (Raphanus sativus) and Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa) species were evaluated and compared to a commercial growing medium (peat) as a control. The optimal mixture for seed growth was determined to be 75% extracted E. globulus bark fiber and 25% commercial substrates such as peat (P), coconut fiber (C), moss (M), and composted pine (CP), as indicated by the MLVI and germination results. Two phytostimulant products, chitosan and alginate-encapsulated fulvic acid, were added to the best substrate mixture, with the purpose of improving their performance. Encapsulated fulvic acid at 0.1% w/v was effective in promoting plant growth, while chitosan at all of the concentrations studied was effective only for mixture 75E-25CP. The mixture of E. globulus fiber and commercial substrates, containing a high proportion of water-extracted fiber (75%), shows the potential to be used in the growth of horticultural crops and in the plant nursery industry.

Abstract:Abstract Asparagus cochinchinensis (Lour.) Merr is a medicinal, edible and horticulture plant. Seedling breeding relies on tissue-cultured technology, but the transplant from tissue-cultured seedlings to field cultivation poses a problem in the large-scale production of A. cochinchinensis . Tissue-cultured seedlings of A. cochinchinensis were used as materials, and they were transplanted into the substrates that were mixed with coconut bran, peat, vermiculite, perlite or garden soil. The analysis of the physical and chemical properties of the substrate, combined with the survival rate of seedlings, the aboveground parameters (plant height, stem diameter, fresh weight and dry weight), underground parameters (root fresh weight, root dry weight, root length, root diameter, root surface area and root volume) and physiological indexes (malondialdehyde, soluble protein, soluble sugar, proline, chlorophyll and root vigour), allow us to understand the effects of different combination substrates on the growth and physiology of A. cochinchinensis tissue-cultured seedlings. We concluded that the survival rate of seedlings was negatively correlated with the bulk density and conductivity and was positively correlated with the porosity in the substrate. The membership function was used to comprehensively evaluate the indexes of each combination substrate, and it was concluded that coconut bran:perlite:vermiculite = 33.33%:33.33%:33.33% (bulk density = 0.23 g · cm −3 , total porosity = 65.07%, pH = 6.30, conductivity = 0.51 mS · cm −1 ) scored the highest, the survival rate of seedlings reached 87.10%, the aboveground and underground growth were vigorous and the quality was better than other substrates. This research provides technical support for the efficient cultivation of tissue-cultured seedlings of A. cochinchinensis and reduces the cost of raising seedlings.

Abstract:In the pursuit of a safe, low-cost, and sustainable method for the reuse of landfill-mined-soil-like-fractions (LFMSFs), pot experiments were conducted using seven growth substrates consisting of LFMSFs, tea residue, and peat for the cultivation of Photinia Â Ă—Â fraseri . Six of the substrates had 40 %:60 %, 60 %:40 %, and 80 %:20 % volume ratios of LFMSFs to tea residue or peat, and one substrate consisted entirely of LFMSFs. The physicochemical properties of the substrate, growth parameters of the plants, and heavy metal content in the different pots were determined after one year of growth. The results indicated that the physicochemical properties of the substrate, that was composed of a mixture of LFMSFs and tea residue showed a significant improvement in organic matter, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. However, there was also an increase in the salt and heavy metal contents when compared with those of peat. The plant growth in the LFMSF and tea residue substrate was slightly lower than that in the LFMSF and peat mixture. Notably, the best plant growth and environmentally friendly effects were observed when LFMSFs were added at 40 %. Additionally, most of the heavy metals were primarily removed from the substrate through the leaves of the seedlings, with the heavy metal contents being relatively low. In conclusion, LFMSFs as a cultivation substrate, represent a practical approach for reutilization, which could contribute to the reduction of reliance on traditional resources.

Abstract:AIMS: Considered as an essential measure in the application of soil seed bank (SSB) projects, the mixing of substrate and surface soil can effectively improve soil condition. This research is aimed at exploring the diversity characteristics of SSBs and the relationships between SSBs and soil properties.METHODS: Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) was adopted to describe the ordination of SSBs on soil properties' gradients; multiple linear regressions were adopted to analyze the relationship between average growth height and soil properties, density and soil properties.RESULTS: Experimental groups of mixed substrate (the mixture of organic and inorganic substrates) had high diversity indexes, especially the Shannon-Wiener Index compared with those of single substrate. Meanwhile, a higher number of species and increased density were also noted in those of mixed substrate. The best test group, No.16, had the highest diversity indexes with a Shannon-Wiener of 1.898, Simpson of 0.633 and Pielou of 0.717, and also showed the highest density of 14000 germinants /m2 and 21 species. In addition, an improvement of the soil's chemical and physical properties was noted when the substrates were mixed. The mixed substrate of turfy soil and perlite could effectively enhance the soil moisture content, whilst a mixed substrate of rice husk carbon and vermiculite could improve the content of available potassium (AK) and phosphorus (AP) and strengthen soil fertility. The germinated plants also reflected obvious regularities of ordination on soil factor gradients. Three distinct cluster groups were presented, of which the first cluster was distributed in an area with a relatively higher content of AK and AP; the second cluster was distributed at places with relatively higher soil moisture content; and the third cluster of plants didn't show any obvious relationship with soil physical and chemical properties. Through CCA analysis, AK and AP were considered the most important soil factors to influence the SSB, which was illustrated in regression analysis with a high correlation coefficient when dependent values were growth height and density respectively. The linear regression equations with: growth height = 142.728 - 1.514TC + 30.218AP - 5.083TN + 10.839AK + 1.234mc; density = -68.216 - 4.609TC + 9.566AP - 35.492TN + 19.779AK - 1.591mc.were established by multiple linear regression.CONCLUSIONS: (1) The mixed substrates showed a greater advantage for SSBs than single substrates, both in improving the number of species, density and diversity indexes. (2) The germinated plants reflected an obvious preference to different soil conditions, which different mixed substrates could improve accordingly. (3) AK, AP were important soil factors to influence SSBs, especially in the growth of plants and density.

Abstract:Mulching is a widely employed soil management practice. The mulches used have variable effects on the soil properties and plant growth. In China, mulches are used to cover bare soil at a few places in landscapes, where most of the soil is uncovered, especially in tree pits. As to improve our understanding on the effect of various mulches on soil properties and tree growth after two years of the treatment justifying its implication in soil fertility and tree growth. A comparison study was conducted to determine the effects of inorganic (cobblestone-CB; water permeable brick-WPB), organic (pine bark-PB; green waste compost-GWC), and living (turf grass-TG) mulches on soil physical and chemical properties at three different depths (0-10 cm, 10-20 cm, and 20-40cm), and on tree growth (Sophora japonica) in urban tree pits. Soil moisture was measured once a month in 2015.The soil samples were collected from the tree pits two years after mulching and used to evaluate the physical and chemical properties. Further, trunk diameter and tree height were determined once a year. During the most months, all types of mulches significantly affected the moisture content of the soil at all the depths analyzed. In July and August, however, the moisture content of PB and TG treated soil decreased when compared with that of unmulched bare soil. Two years after mulching, the bulk density of the soil treated with PB, GWC, and TG was significantly affected at10-20 cm, with GWC exhibiting a relatively better effect. The treatments with PB, GWC, and TG also improved the total porosity, macroporosity, and microporosity of the soil at lower depths. Further, WPB worsened the bulk density and porosity of the soil, elevating the pH at lower depths. The organic matter, total N, mineral N, available P, and available K contents of the soil at lower depths increased when mulched with organic material. Turf grass significantly increased only the total N and available K at 0-10 and 10-20 cm. There was no significant difference in the soil properties among the treatments at 20-40 cm. Furthermore, the trunk diameter and tree height were not affected by the mulches two years after mulching. In conclusion, organic mulches especially GWC, not only increased soil fertility significantly but improved soil physical characters (0-10 cm depth) comparing to other mulches, are suitable to cover bare soil in urban tree pits.
The Application Effects of Mushroom Residue for Pepper Seedling

Abstract:With decomposed mushroom residue as experimental material,a pepper seedling experiment was tested to study the compound substrate properties of mushroom residue and peat and vermiculite in different proportion(V/V).The results showed that the compound substrate properties with the addition of mushroom residue at rate of 10% to 70% and vermiculite and peat were similar to CK(mushroom residue 70% and vermiculite 30%).Furthermore,the compound substrate application effects in different proportion for pepper seedling showed that T4 treatment(mushroom residue 50% and peat 20% and vermiculite 30%)and T3 treatment(mushroom residue 70% and vermiculite 30%)were the best.

Abstract:Seven different substrates were prepared by mixing red soil, humus and river sand in different volume ratios and the growth and yield of Amorphophallus muelleri bulbils in different substrates was investigated. The growth of A. muelleri seedlings were tracked during the reproductive period, with measurements taken of indicators such as petiole length, petiole basal diameter and leaf size during the late period of leaf expansion. Number of surviving plants, weights and sizes of corms, and leaf bulbils were recorded after lodging. The results showed that there were differences in the physical and chemical properties of the seven substrates, but all met the growth requirements of A. muelleri. T1 (river sand), T2 (river sand: humus 1:1), T3 (humus), and T7 (river sand: humus: red soil 1:1:1) had higher emergence rates, reaching 95 %. T4 (humus: red soil 1:1) and T7 had better growth, with larger petiole and leaf sizes than other substrates. T3, T4, and T7 had higher yields, with a bulbil yield of 0.30 t hm-2 and a corm yield of 22.06 t hm-2. Compared to the use of a single substrate, whether river sand, humus, or red soil, the proportional mixture of the three test materials improved the physical structure and chemical composition of the substrate, contributing to the growth of A. muelleri. T7 (river sand: humus: red soil 1:1:1) was was found to be the best nursery substrate for A. muelleri.

Abstract:Erythropalum scandens Bl. is a medicinal woody vegetable found in southern China and parts of Southeast Asia. Studies have shown improper substrate hindered E. scandens seedling growth, causing water accumulation and nutrient deficiency. In pursuit of an ideal growth medium for E. scandens seedlings during the early stages, this study conducted a pot experiment to identify a mixed substrate with optimal water permeability and fertility. In this study, pure Alfisols soil treatment as the control (CK), and two soilless substrates (peat soil and perlite) were combined with Alfisols soil into different volume ratios, in order to better use soil resources from understory space and balance the texture of mixed substrates. The growth, physiological characteristics and nutrient status of 24-month-old E. scandens seedlings were determined after planting in different mixed ratios. The results showed that as the proportion of peat soil increased in the mix, most indexes exhibited an initial increase followed by a decline, while soluble protein content decreased consistently. Conversely, an increasing perlite ratio resulted in a general decline in most growth and physiological indexes. Root growth, biomass accumulation and chlorophyll content, peaked in the 66.67% Alfisols soil + 33.33% perlite (T4) treatment. Notably, T3 (66.67% Alfisols soil + 33.33% peat soil) showcased the best above-ground growth, while T1 (50.00% Alfisols soil + 50.00% peat soil) excelled in element content accumulation. In conclusion, the cultivation substrate should primarily consist of Alfisols soil, constituting at least 50%. The addition of peat soil enhances above-ground growth and nutrients accumulation, while perlite contributes to robust root development. One third of peat soil and a small amount of perlite can be added to the substrate during E. scandens seedling cultivation, and proper fertilization should also be used in order to increase nutrient accumulation in aboveground and underground parts. This research provides valuable insights into maximizing the potential of E. scandens seedlings through precise cultivation methods.
Effects of Different Cultivation Measures on Growth and Physiology of Container Seedling of Paeonia Ostii

Abstract:Container seedlings of Paeonia ostii T. Hong et J. X. Zhang were cultivated in different substrate ratios (i. e. volume ratio of peat and perlite of 1:0, 2:1 and 3:1, respectively), treated by different measures for lateral root promoting ( including single measures of main root shortened by cutting and irrigating root by 200 mg · L-1 IBA solution and combined measure of above two single measures ) and cultivated in different culture containers ( including tray, nutrition pot and non-woven bag ) , respectively. Differences in morphological indexes, weight per plant, root/shoot ratio and some physiological indexes of container seedling were analyzed, and on this basis, cultivation measures suitable for cultivation of container seedling of P. ostii were screened. The analysis results show that in peat-perlite mixed substrate with volume ratio of 3:1, lateral root number per plant, fresh and dry weights of under-ground part per plant, root/shoot ratio and contents of total chlorophyll, soluble sugar and water in leaf of container seedling of P. ostii all are significantly higher than those in other substrates. Eithertreated by single measure of main root shortened by cutting or by combined measure, leaf area per plant, lateral root number per plant, fresh and dry weights of under-ground part per plant, root/shoot ratio and water content in leaf of container seedling all are significantly higher than those of container seedling of the control ( no treating) and treated by single measure of irrigating root by 200 mg·L-1 IBA solution, in which, most indexes of container seedling treated by combined measure are the highest. Plant height, collar diameter, lateral root number per plant, and contents of total chlorophyll, soluble sugar and water in leaf of container seedling cultivated in non-woven bag and nutrition pot all are significantly higher than those of container seedling cultivated in tray, in which, lateral root number per plant, contents of total chlorophyll and water in leaf of container seedling cultivated in non-woven bag are the highest, and these three indexes are significantly higher than those of container seedling cultivated in nutrition pot. It is suggested that there is a certain effect of different cultivation measures on growth and physiology of container seedling of P. ostii, on the whole, effects on lateral root number per plant, main root length, weight of under-ground part, root/shoot ratio, leaf area, contents of total chlorophyll, soluble sugar and water in leaf all are greater. According to the experimental results, cultivation measure suitable for cultivation of container seedling of P. ostii is selected preliminarily, that is, using non-woven bag, taking peat-perlite mixed substrate with volume ratio of 3:1 as cultivation substrate, and practicing combined measure of main root shortened by cutting with irrigating root by 200 mg·L-1 IBA solution.

Abstract:Traditional substrate cultivation is now a routine practice in vegetable facility breeding. However, finding renewable substrates that can replace traditional substrates is urgent in today's production. In this study, we used the 'Pindstrup' substrate as control and two types of composite substrates made from fermented corn straw (i.e. 0–3 and 3–5 mm) to identify appropriate substrate conditions for tomato seedling growth under winter greenhouse conditions. Seedling growth potential related data and substrate water content related data were tested to carry out data-oriented support. Since the single physiological data cannot well explain the mechanism of tomato seedlings under winter greenhouse condition, transcriptomic analysis of tomato root and leaf tissues were conducted to provide theoretical basis. The physiological data of tomato seedlings and substrate showed that compared with 0–3 mm and Pindstrup substrate, tomato seedlings planted in 3–5 mm had stronger growth potential and stronger water retention, and were more suitable for planting tomato seedlings. Transcriptome analysis revealed a greater number of DEGs between the Pindstrup and the 3–5 mm. The genes in this group contribute to tomato growth as well as tomato stress response mechanisms, such as ABA-related genes, hormone-related genes and some TFs. The simulation network mechanism diagram adds evidence to the above conclusions. Overall, these results demonstrate the potential benefits of using the fermented corn straw of 3–5 mm for growing tomato seedlings and present a novel method of utilizing corn straw.

Substrate selection for container seedling breeding of Pinus flexilis.

Abstract:A container seedling breeding experiment was carried out with seeds of four Pinus flexilis provenances introduced from North America by four types of mixed substrate with different proportions(surface soil substrate was used as control).The most suitable substrate selected was B2(30% sand,50% peat,20% vermiculite) through measuring eight growth indexes and four physiological indexes of the one-year-old container bred seedlings of the four provenances.The correlations between the physical and chemical characters of the different substrates and the morphological and physiological indexes showed that the physiological indexes of the substrates were the most important factors influencing the growth and development of the one-year-old Pinus flexilis container bred seedlings.

Cutting Propagation with Four Cultivars of Pot Chrysanthemums

Abstract:To determine optimal conditions for cutting propagation of four newly bred pot chrysanthemums(Chrysanthemum × morifolium) cultivars:'Jinling Huangguan','Jinling Yangguang','Jinling Jiaohuang' and 'Jinling Zishan'.Six indexes including:maximum root length,average root length,root diameter,adventitious root number,root fresh weight,and rooting rate were used to evaluate rooting ability.Treatments were:matrices(vermiculite,perlite,and grass charcoal),plug size(50,72,128,and 288-cave) to test the rooting effect,1-naphthylacetic acid(NAA) concentration(0,250,500,750,and 1 000 mg·L-1),and cold storage period for cuttings(4 ℃ for 14,28,and 42 d).The plants were randomly plotted,each plot includes 30 cuttings,and the experiment contains three replicates,90 cuttings for each cultivar were included.10 cuttings were sampled from each plot at 20 days after being planted.Results showed that vermiculite and grass charcoal(1 ∶ 1,V ∶ V) was the optimal matrix for rooting,followed by grass charcoal and perlite(1 ∶ 1,V ∶ V).Rooting ability of 'Jinling Huangguan','Jinling Yangguang' and 'Jinling Jiaohuang' planted in 288-cave plug decreased significantly at P=0.05 level compared to those planted in the other plugs of lesser caves.Root length and root fresh weight overall increased with 500-750 mg·L-1 NAA.In addition,rooting ability decreased after 42 d cold storage,howevere,there is no significant difference between 42 d cold storage and control in 'Jinling Huangguan' and 'Jinling Jiaohuang'cultivars.The root number of 'Jinling Yangguang' increased significantly at P=0.01 level after 42 d cold storage.However,maximum root length of 'Jinling Yangguang' increased significantly at P=0.05 level after 14 d cold storage.The present study will do aid to the seedling production of these newly bred cultivars.[Ch,4 tab.8 ref.]
The Effect of Hormone Types, Concentrations, and Treatment Times on the Rooting Traits of Morus 'Yueshenda 10' Softwood Cuttings

Abstract:Enhancing the capacity of fruit trees to propagate via cuttings is an important endeavor for the high-quality development of the fruit industry. Optimizing the conditions for the cutting propagation of mulberry seedlings is an important factor that influences the industrial production of this plant; however, the currently used mulberry breeding technology system is not mature. In this experiment, an orthogonal design was used to intercept semi-woody shoots of Yueshenda 10 as cuttings and set different hormone concentrations (200, 500, 800, and 1000 mg/L), different hormone types (NAA, IBA, IAA, and ABT-1), and different soaking times (10, 30, 60, and 120 min) for cuttings. The effects of the three factors on the rooting of mulberry cuttings were investigated by soaking the cuttings in clean water for 10 min as a control. The results showed that the primary and secondary order of the three factors affecting the rooting rate of cuttings was hormone concentration > hormone type > soaking time, and the concentration of exogenous hormones had a significant impact on all rooting indicators (p < 0.05). In addition, the rooting rate (66.24%), average number of roots (7.54 roots/plant), and rooting effect index (4.23) of Yueshenda 10 cuttings reached the optimal level when soaked with 800 mg/L ABT-1 for 30 min. The longest root length (10.20 cm) and average root length (4.44 cm) of cuttings achieved the best results when soaked with 800 mg/L NAA for 60 min and 500 mg/L NAA for 30 min, respectively. On balance, it is considered that the preferred solution is to soak the cuttings of Yueshenda 10 with 800 mg/L ABT1 solution for 0.5 h.

Abstract:The effectiveness of mulch treatments on soil quality as well as on the yield and growth rates of bamboo are major considerations and require further attention. The present work was aimed at assessing the impacts of three different mulch materials on soil available nutrients, biochemical traits, and growth patterns of Dendrocalamus latiflorus Munro. We found that relative to the control (CK), bamboo leaves (MB) and organic fertilizers (MF) treatments significantly (P < 0.05) increased the number of bamboo shoots (47.5 and 22.7%) and yield (21.4 and 9.1%), respectively. We observed that under MB and MF treatments, the concentrations of soil available nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium) increased and played a key role in the differences in chlorophyll, leaf carbohydrate contents (soluble sugar and starch) and were essential to promote bamboo shoot development. Furthermore, we infer from principal component analysis (PCA), that both MB and MF appear to be a better choice than rice husks (MR) to improve nutrient availability, biochemical traits of the leaves, and increased bamboo shoot productivity. Consequently, we suggest using organic fertilizers and bamboo leaves as mulch materials are effective for soil conservation to attain high-quality bamboo production.
PHYSICAL-CHEMICAL EVALUATION OF RESIDUES FROM THE SHIITAKE MUSHROOM PRODUCTION FOR THE SEEDLING GERMINATION IN NURSERY

Abstract:The substrates most utilized for the production of forest seedling in Mexico are Peat and forest soil; however, the high cost of the forest production, creates the necessity and search for alternative substrates, which must be capable of promoting healthy and good quality plant. There are many byproducts of different productive processes that can be used as a substitute for peat in forest nurseries. The residues form the Shiitake mushroom production (Lentinula edodes) has not yet been characterized, therefore, its potential, as an alternative substrate remains unknown. It was conducted a physical and chemical characterization of the compost made from the residues of Shiitake mushroom production as well as an evaluation of the germination of Pinus Pseudostrobus at nursery. The compost showed a 4.37% content of N, 0.904% K, and 0.117% P, additionally it has a porosity of 30% among other physical and chemical properties. After 30 days of sowing, the plants that developed in the Shiitake compost 50%+vermiculite 25%+perlite 25%, presented a 92% of seedling, which was higher than the control treatment (Peat Moss 33%+vermiculite 33%+perlite 33%). From the results obtained, it is proposed that the substrate based on the compost from cultivation of Shiitake, allows a high germination rate contributing to the forestry sector.
