Abstract:Relay-assisted free-space optical (FSO) communication systems are exploited as a means to mitigate the limiting effects of the turbulence induced atmospheric scintillation. However, conventional ground relays are stationary, and their optimal placement is not always feasible. Due to their mobility and flexibility, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) provide new opportunities for FSO relaying systems. In this paper, a hovering UAV-based serial FSO decode-and-forward relaying system is investigated. In the channel modelling for such a system, four types of impairments (i.e., atmospheric loss, atmospheric turbulence, pointing error, and link interruption due to angle-of-arrival fluctuation) are considered. Based on the proposed channel model, a tractable expression for the probability density function of the total channel gain is obtained. Closed-form expressions of the link outage probability and end-to-end outage probability are derived. Asymptotic outage performance bounds for each link and the overall system are also presented to reveal insights into the impacts of different impairments. To improve system performance, we optimize the beam width, field-of-view and UAVs' locations. Numerical results show that the derived theoretical expressions are accurate to evaluate the outage performance of the system. Moreover, the proposed optimization schemes are efficient and can improve performance significantly.

Abstract:An in-flight unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) free-space optical (FSO) communication channel model is proposed by considering the beam deviation of the UAV under different motion states and the phase distortion caused by atmospheric turbulences. The influence of the different motion states and turbulences on the communication quality is evaluated through phase screen and Monte Carlo methods. When the average bit error rate (BER) is 10−5, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) should be increased from 13 dB to 20 dB when the tilt angle of the UAV increases from 0 to 5 mrad. An SNR of up to 20 dB is required when the variance of the wind σα2 is 2 mrad. The performance of the in-flight UAV FSO link can be effectively improved through spatial diversity receiving technology. The BER of lower than 10−5 can be obtained just with an SNR of 13 dB if the spatial diversity array with four receivers is used.

Abstract:This paper investigates and enhances unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) relay-assisted free-space optics (FSO) optical wireless communication (OWC) systems under the effects of pointing errors (PEs) and atmospheric turbulences (ATs). The incorporation of UAVs as buffer-aided moving relays in the conventional FSO (CFSO) relay-assisted systems is proposed for enhancing the performance of PEs through AT. Using M-PSK (phase shift keying) and M-QAM (quadrature amplitude modulation), the impact of PEs on transmission quality is evaluated in this work. We evaluate and optimize the symbol error rate, outage probability (OP), and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for the UAV-to-ground station-based FSO communications systems. The spatial diversity-based relay-assisted CFSO systems can enhance the performance of the UAV-UAV FSO links. In this paper, a new FSO (NFSO) channel model for the hovering UAV-FSO OWC fluctuations under the PEs, AT effects, jitter, deviation, receiving an error, and wind resistance effects are established. To improve the performance of hovering UAV-based FSO relay OWC systems. We reduce the influence of UAV-FSO OWC fluctuations under PEs and AT effects. By receiving incoherent signals at various locations, the spatial diversity-based relay-assisted NFSO systems can significantly increase the system's redundancy and enhance connection stability. Numerical results show that to achieve a bit-error-rate (BER) of , the required SNR is ≥ 23 dB when the wind variance of the UAVs increases from 0 to 7 mrad with FSO link distance L = 2000 m. The required SNR is ≥ 25 dB when the wind variance is 1 mrad at an OP of . To obtain an average BER of , the SNR should be 16.23 dB, 17.64 dB, and 21.45 dB when is 0 mrad, 1 mrad, and 2 mrad, respectively. Using 8-PSK modulation without PEs requires 23.5 dB at BER of while 16-QAM without PEs requires 26.5 dB to maintain the same BER of . Compared with 16-QAM without PEs, the SNR gain of 8-PSK without PEs is 3 dB. The results show the relay-assisted UAV-FSO system with five stationary relays can achieve BER at 25 dB SNR in the ideal case and at 27 dB SNR with AT and PE at FSO length 1000 m. The results show the relay UAV-FSO system outperforms the CFSO at the BER and SNR performance. The effects of UAV'FSO s fluctuation increase when the UAV-FSO link length, increases. The results of the weak turbulence achieve better SER compared with MT and ST. The obtained results show that decreasing can compensate for the effects of UAV-FSO link fluctuation on the proposed system. Finally, we investigated the CFSO relay-assisted UAV-FSO system with aided NFSO-UAVs spatial diversity-based relay-based on NFSO OWC and revealed the benefits of the resulting hybrid architecture.

Performance Analysis of UAV-based Mixed RF-UWOC Transmission Systems

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the performance of a mixed radio-frequency-underwater wireless optical communication (RF-UWOC) system where an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), as a low-altitude mobile aerial base station, transmits information to an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) through a fixed-gain amplify-and-forward (AF) or decode-and-forward (DF) relay. Our analysis accounts for the main factors that affect the system performance, such as the UAV height, air bubbles, temperature gradient, water salinity variations, and detection techniques. Employing fixed-gain AF relaying and DF relaying, we derive closed-form expressions for some key performance metrics, e.g., outage probability (OP), average bit error rate (ABER), and average channel capacity (ACC). In addition, in order to get further insights, asymptotic analyses for the OP and ABER are also carried out. Furthermore, assuming DF relaying, we derive analytical expressions for the optimal UAV altitude that minimizes the OP. Simulation results show that the UAV altitude influences the system performance and there is an optimal altitude which ensures a minimum OP. Moreover, based on the asymptotic results, it is demonstrated that the diversity order of fixed-gain AF relaying and DF relaying are respectively determined by the RF link and by the detection techniques of the UWOC link.

Abstract:To improve the performance of fee-space optical communication systems, this paper analyzes the performance of a relay-aided hybrid fee-space optical (FSO)/radio frequency (RF) cooperation system based on a selective combination and decoding forward transmission scheme. In this system, the FSO sub-link experienced Málaga turbulence with pointing errors and the RF sub-link suffered Nakagami-m fading. Firstly, the probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the end-to-end output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the relay-aided hybrid FSO/RF system are derived. Then, using the extended generalized bivariate Meijer's G-function (EGBMGF) and the approximate analytical formula of the generalized Gauss–Laguerre integral, mathematical expressions of the end-to-end average bit error rate (ABER) and outage probability of the relay-aided hybrid FSO/RF system with different subcarrier intensity modulation and different detection schemes are derived. Through a simulation analysis of the system, the results show that compared with the other three modulation technologies, the hybrid FSO/RF direct link and relay-aided hybrid FSO/RF system with coherent binary phase shift keying (CBPSK) modulation have the best bit error performance. Compared with direct detection, the hybrid direct link and relay-aided hybrid system with coherent detection can significantly improve the communication performance. Increasing the RF fading parameter m can further improve the bit error and outage performance of the hybrid direct link and relay-aided hybrid system; the hybrid direct link can significantly mitigate the degradation of communication performance in the FSO system caused by pointing errors, and the relay-aided hybrid system can further improve the communication performance; under weak turbulence conditions, the impact of pointing errors on the performance of the relay-aided hybrid system can even be ignored. The greater the total number of paths in the relay-aided hybrid system, the better the communication performance of the system; however, the more hops, the worse the performance of the system. The outage probability of the hybrid direct link and relay-aided hybrid system are very sensitive to the decision threshold, and the larger the decision threshold, the worse the outage performance. The transmission distance of different hybrid direct links has little impact on the performance of hybrid direct links and relay-aided hybrid systems. Improving the signal-to-noise ratio of RF sub-links significantly improves the performance of hybrid direct links and relay-aided hybrid systems.

Abstract:Due to the influence of the atmospheric environment and pointing errors, the performance of free space optical communication is greatly limited. In this paper, we propose a parallel multi-hop hybrid free space optical (FSO)/radio frequency (RF) system to improve the system performance. The FSO sub-link and RF sub-link are modeled by Gamma–Gamma turbulence with pointing errors and Nakagami-m distributions, respectively. Based on the selective combination scheme, the probability density function (PDF) and cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the hybrid FSO/RF one-hop or direct link are obtained. Then, the PDF and CDF of the output SNR of the parallel multi-hop hybrid system are derived with the decoded forward (DF) protocol considered. Finally, the expressions of the average bit error rate (ABER) and outage probability are derived for the parallel multi-hop hybrid system, the hybrid FSO/RF direct link, and the FSO-only direct link. The results show that the parallel multi-hop hybrid system can effectively mitigate the negative impact of atmospheric turbulence and pointing errors and can significantly improve the system performance.

Abstract:In this letter, performance of a multiantenna multiuser unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted terrestrial-satellite communication system over mixed free space optics (FSO)/radiofrequency (RF) channels is analyzed. Downlink transmission from the satellite to the UAV is completed through FSO link which follows gamma–gamma distribution with pointing error impairments. Both the heterodyne detection and intensity modulation direct detection techniques are considered at the FSO receiver. To avail the antenna diversity, multiple transmit antennas are considered at the UAV. Selective decode-and-forward scheme is assumed at the UAV and opportunistic user scheduling is performed while considering the practical constraints of outdated channel state information (CSI) during the user selection and transmission phase. The RF links are assumed to follow Nakagami-m distribution due to its versatile nature. In this context, for the performance analysis, analytical expressions of outage probability, asymptotic outage probability, ergodic capacity, effective capacity, and generalized average symbol-error-rate expressions of various quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) schemes such as hexagonal-QAM, cross-QAM, and rectangular QAM are derived. A comparison of various modulation schemes is presented. Further, the impact of pointing error, number of antennas, delay constraint, fading severity, and imperfect CSI are highlighted on the system performance. Finally, all the analytical results are verified through the Monte–Carlo simulations.

Abstract:As the era of sixth-generation (6G) communications approaches, there will be an unprecedented increase in the number of wireless internet-connected devices and a sharp rise in mobile data traffic. Faced with the scarcity of spectrum resources in traditional communication networks and challenges such as rapidly establishing communications after disasters, this study leverages unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to promote an integrated multi-hop communication system combining free-space optical (FSO) communication, terahertz (THz) technology, and intelligent reflecting surface (IRS). This innovative amalgamation capitalizes on the flexibility of UAVs, the deployability of IRS, and the complementary strengths of FSO and THz communications. We have developed a comprehensive channel model that includes the effects of atmospheric turbulence, attenuation, pointing errors, and angle-of-arrival (AOA) fluctuations. Furthermore, we have derived probability density functions (PDFs) and cumulative distribution functions (CDFs) for various switching techniques. Employing advanced methods such as Gaussian–Laguerre quadrature and the central limit theorem (CLT), we have calculated key performance indicators including the average outage probability, bit error rate (BER), and channel capacity. The numerical results demonstrate that IRS significantly enhances the performance of the UAV-based hybrid FSO/THz system. The research indicates that optimizing the number of IRS elements can substantially increase throughput and reliability while minimizing switching costs. Additionally, the multi-hop approach specifically addresses the line-of-sight (LoS) dependency limitations inherent in FSO and THz systems by utilizing UAVs as dynamic relay points. This strategy effectively bridges longer distances, overcoming physical and atmospheric obstacles, and ensures stable communication links even under adverse conditions. This study underscores that the enhanced multi-hop FSO/THz link is highly effective for emergency communications after disasters, addressing the challenge of scarce spectrum resources. By strategically deploying UAVs as relay points in a multi-hop configuration, the system achieves greater flexibility and resilience, making it highly suitable for critical communication scenarios where traditional networks might fail.

Abstract:Space-air-ground integrated networks (SAGIN) within UAV-assisted free-space optical (FSO) communication systems can efficiently accommodate massive connections and provide highly reliable and seamless communications. In this work, we investigate the performance of a UAV-assisted, asymmetric, dual-hop radio frequency (RF)/FSO system with the amplified-and-forward relay protocol for the SAGIN. Specifically, the shadowed Rician fading is utilized in this study to characterize the shadowing effect on the RF signal for the satellite-to-UAV link. Meanwhile, the atmospheric turbulence effect on the optical signal for the UAV-to-terrestrial user link is modeled by the Málaga distribution fading, in view of the pointing error impairments. For comparison, the heterodyne detection technique is employed, as well as the intensity modulation with direct detection technique, in improving performance of the relay system. Thus, we derive the closed-form expressions for the cumulative distribution function, probability density function, the moment generating function, and particularly, the moments of the end-to-end RF/FSO system, in terms of Meijer’s G-function. Utilizing these derived formulae, the precise closed-form expressions for the outage probability, the average bit error rate (BER) with various modulation schemes, and the ergodic capacity are given. In specific, the tight asymptotic results for the outage probability and the average BER at the high SNR regions are derived using the asymptotic expansion of Meijer’s G-function. Furthermore, closed-form expressions are presented for the case that the FSO link experiences Gamma-Gamma distribution by changing some specific parameters. Finally, extensive numerical results validate the theoretical results with the Monte-Carlo simulation.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a mixed radio frequency (RF)/free space optical (FSO) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communication system, based on modulating retro-reflector (MRR) and reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), which adopts the hybrid L-ary pulse position modulation-binary phase shift keying-subcarrier intensity modulation (L-PPM-BPSK-SIM). More specifically, the RF channel follows Rayleigh distribution, while the FSO channel obeys Gamma–Gamma distribution that considers atmospheric turbulence and pointing error. For decode-and-forward (DF) relay, the MRR is installed on the UAV to reduce its weight, size, and power consumption. In particular, the RIS is used as user terminal along with the RF signal generator to achieve signal enhancement. Based on this, closed expressions for the outage probability, average bit error rate (BER) and average channel capacity of the end-to-end uplink and downlink are derived. Numerical results confirm that while the relay limitation is solved by MRR, RIS significantly reduces the outage probability and average BER as well as obviously increases the average channel capacity. Furthermore, the hybrid L-PPM-BPSK-SIM with average symbol length greater than eight can effectively improve the average BER performance of the system.

Abstract:The unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is considered a promising auxiliary relay for enhancing network coverage due to its easy deployment, agility, and maneuverability. In order to overcome the obstruction of towering buildings and the limitation of relaying energy, this paper proposes a half-duplex decode-and-forward UAV-assisted relaying network based on simultaneous wireless information and power transfer scheme. The power splitting (PS) is implemented at the UAV relay to address the challenge of energy limitation by separating information and energy from the radio frequency signal. We also study the impact of hardware impairments on transmitters, which can actually degrade communication performance. We derive both an exact expression and asymptotic analysis for the outage probability (OP) with energy harvesting and hardware impairments. In addition, we formulate an optimization form to find the optimal PS ratio and minimize the outage probability. Due to the nonconvex nature of this optimization problem, we perform a series of transformations to reformulate it into a convex optimization form. Experimental simulations validate our theoretical results. Specifically, optimal altitude for UAV is about 300 m and relatively constant in different conditions. The OP of our work is nearly 0.33 smaller than that of AF relaying in a given situation. Moreover, we provide practical guidance for the design and deployment of the UAV-assisted communication by exploring the effects of UAV's altitude, hardware impairments level, and power splitting ratio on the outage probability.

Abstract:In the connection between the last kilometer access network and the backbone network, the dual-hop hybrid free-space optical-radio frequency (FSO-RF) relay system is considered to be an effective solution to increase the capacity and coverage of the wireless communication system. However, the transmission performance of FSO link is greatly affected by atmospheric turbulence, pointing errors and weather such as fog and snow, and the RF access network has low rate and relatively high delay. To ensure communication quality, a hybrid FSO/RF-terahertz (THz) relay system has been designed. Decode-and-forward relay is selected, and the hybrid FSO/RF communication based on adaptive combining scheme is considered before the relay node, and THz link is used after the relay node to access the users. Using the statistical characteristics of different links obtained, expressions for the outage probability and average bit error rate of the system were derived. The effects of different parameters on the performance of hybrid FSO/RF-THz relay system is studied, and the first hop adaptive combining scheme is compared with the single-threshold switching scheme and the single-link FSO system. The analysis results indicate that the hybrid FSO/RF-THz relay system can provide better outage and bit error rate performance by using the adaptive combining scheme, which can improve the system communication rate while taking into account the communication reliability.

Abstract:Due to the rapid development of satellite laser communication technology, free‐space optical (FSO) links present a promising alternative to traditional radio frequency (RF) links. In this paper, taking the influence of weather factors into consideration, we investigate the performance of the hybrid FSO/RF links where the feeder link operates in the FSO band and the user link operates in the hybrid FSO/RF band. Specifically, the FSO feeder link is modeled by the gamma–gamma distribution in the presence of beam wander and pointing error, and the detection method adopts either the intensity modulation with direct intensity (IM/DD) or heterodyne detection. The RF user link is assumed to follow the shadowed Rician model. In addition, in order to improve the transmission rate of the link under the time‐varying satellite–terrestrial channel, a rate adaptation scheme is proposed. The performance of the system under study is evaluated in terms of the outage probability, average bit error rate (BER), and average transmission rate. Our results provide some important insights, for example, (1) due to the constraints of the feeder link and weather factors, there is an upper limit on the outage performance and bit error rate of the hybrid link; (2) the adaptive transmission strategy can significantly improve the transmission rate of the link compared with traditional design. Taking the weather factor into consideration, we propose a dual‐hop hybrid FSO/RF relay link model and give a detail description of it. We discussed the notable effects of the shadowing conditions, the atmospheric turbulence, the pointing errors, and detection method on the overall system performance. In addition, we find that the adaptive rate transmission strategy can significantly improve the transmission strategy of the system compared to the fixed rate design.

Abstract:Hybrid free space optical (FSO)/radio frequency (RF) systems have been proved to be reliable links for high-data-rate wireless backhauls. In this paper, we present a unified performance analysis of the hybrid FSO/RF transmission system which transmits the identical data in both links and implements two popular diversity combining schemes, namely, selection combining (SC) and maximal ratio combining (MRC), in the receiver. Specially, for the FSO link, the Gamma-Gamma turbulence with pointing errors under heterodyne detection (HD) and intensity modulation/direction detection (IM/DD) is considered in our analysis while the general \k{appa}-{\mu} shadowed fading which unifies popular RF fading models is employed for the analysis of the RF link. As a result, unified closed-form expressions of outage probabilities and average bit error rates for different modulation schemes are derived. Analytical and Monte Carlo simulation results are provided to characterize the performance of the hybrid FSO/RF link which is compared to the single FSO link and the single RF link. The agreement between the analytical and simulation results confirms the unification of various FSO channels and RF fading scenarios into a single closed-form expression.

Abstract:In this paper, we present the evaluation of network parameters for the unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled triple-hop mixed RF/FSO-based wireless communication system, where one relay is a fixed relay and the second relay is a UAV which acts as decode-and-forward relay for communication from the base station (B) to the multiple mobile users (Mi),i∈{1,2⋯N}. The first hop from B to fixed relay (R1) is the radio frequency (RF) link modeled using α−κ−μ fading distribution, the second hop from the relay R1 to the UAV relay (R2) is a free space optics (FSO) link modeled using Gamma-Gamma fading, and the third hop from R2 to the Mi is, again, an RF link modeled using the Rayleigh fading model. The direct communication between the B and the Mi is not feasible due to the very large distance. We derive the closed form analytical expression for the outage probability of the proposed system and find the effect of the base system parameters on the performance of the system. We also analyze the outage probability of the system at high SNR values to get further insights of the system performance. In addition, altitude optimization of UAV is carried out to know the optimal elevation angle in correspondence with UAV's optimal altitude in order to maximize performance of the system.

Abstract:In emergency scenarios, infrastructure of wireless networks is usually damaged and becomes out of service. Therefore, Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have been widely nominated as an alternative to provide prompt and efficient wireless connectivity. To this end, UAV-assisted communication systems are recently being under investigation. In this paper, the focus is on UAV-assisted dual-hop links in which the source, relay and destination can be either ground-based or aerial nodes. Specifically, the paper analyzes the performance of these links in terms of the outage probability (OP) and the bit error rate (BER) considering eight different setups of dual-hop UAV-assisted links operating over the millimeter wave (mmWave) band. Unlike others, the performance analysis is conducted considering practical models of the channel fading, path loss, antennas gain and UAVs' fluctuations. A generalized mathematical framework is followed to obtain the cumulative distribution function (CDF) and the probability density function (pdf) of the overall signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), which are utilized to characterize closed form expressions for the average OP and BER for all proposed setups. Analytical results are validated by Monte Carlo simulations which investigate the role of many setup parameters including the number of antenna elements, the fluctuation intensity, the transmit power and the modulation order. Moreover, results indicate that increasing the number of aerial entities in the link negatively affects its performance due to the impact of the fluctuations on the directional antennas in the mmWave band.

Abstract:The multi-hop amplify-and-forward free-space optical communication (FSOC) system is studied in random fog using the I-function, considering Gamma-Gamma atmospheric turbulence and Beckmann pointing error. Outage probability, average bit error rate and average ergodic channel capacity are obtained. Channel-state-information assisted relay performs better than fixed-gain relay under high transmitted power. Increasing the hop number significantly improves the performance. More hops are needed in medium fog than in light fog to achieve the same performance. In addition, on a single-hop link, the influence of fog channel on system performance is dominant, while atmospheric turbulence intensity, normalized jitter standard deviation and normalized boresight error have little effect on the system performance. However, on a multi-hop link, atmospheric turbulence intensity, normalized jitter standard deviation and normalized boresight error have serious effects on system performance. Compared with correcting the normalized boresight error, compensating the normalized jitter standard deviation greatly improves the multi-hop FSOC system performance. Furthermore, optimizing beam width can further improves the performance. To ensure good communication, the system should select a low-order modulation scheme.

Abstract:The mixed radio frequency (RF)/free-space optical (FSO) relaying is a promising technology for coverage improvement, while there lacks unified expressions to describe its performance. In this paper, a unified performance analysis framework of a dual-hop relay system over asymmetric RF/FSO links is presented. More specifically, we consider the RF link follows generalized κ-μ or η-μ distributions, while the FSO link experiences the gamma-gamma distribution, respectively. Novel analytical expressions of the probability density function and cumulative distribution function are derived. We then capitalize on these results to provide new exact analytical expressions of the outage probability and bit error rate (BER). Furthermore, the outage probability for high signal-to-noise ratios and the BER for different modulation schemes are deduced to provide useful insights into the impact of system and channel parameters of the overall system performance. These accurate expressions are general, since they correspond to generalized fading in the RF link and account for pointing errors, atmospheric turbulence, and different modulation schemes in the FSO link. The links between derived results and previous results are presented. Finally, numerical and Monte-Carlo simulation results are provided to demonstrate the validity of the proposed unified expressions.

Abstract:Full-duplex (FD) transmission and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) communication are techniques that are expected to enhance the spectrum efficiency of wireless communication systems. In this paper, a two-way (TW) system in which two FD terminals communicate with the support of an FD-UAV (FDU) is investigated in both cases of ideal hardware (without (Wo) hardware impairments (HIs)) and with (Wi) HIs. The joint and cross effects of HIs and residual self-interferences (RSIs) are deeply evaluated in the TW-FDU system. The mathematical formulas of the outage probability (OP) and throughput of the TW-FDU-Wo-HI and TW-FDU-Wi-HI systems are theoretically derived over realistic channels recommended for the fifth and beyond generations (5G/B5G). Numerical results confirm that the TW-FDU-Wo-HI system is greatly affected by RSIs generated by FD transmission of all terminals. Whereas, the TW-FDU-Wi-HI system is significantly affected by both RISs and HIs. The OP and throughput of the TW-FDU-Wi-HI system are saturated faster than those of the TW-FDU-Wo-HI system, especially when high transmission power and high transmission rate are utilized. Moreover, when either the HI level or RSI level is large enough, the impact of the other parameter (RSI or HI) can be ignored. Besides considering the effects of HIs and RSIs, we also investigate the impact of other key parameters, such as the required rate, carrier frequency, and UAV altitude on the OP and throughput of the considered system with fixed and variable gains.

Abstract:A less-complex and efficient time-hysteresis switching algorithm assisted hybrid free-space optics (FSO)/millimeter wave (mm)-radio frequency (RF) system is presented in the paper. A time-hysteresis switching algorithm is utilized for link transient for selection of FSO or RF links. For improving the long-haul communication efficiency and coverage a selective decode-and-forward relay scheme is blended with hybrid FSO/RF system along with maximal-ratio-combining (MRC) for signal reconstruction at the receiver end. However, the pointing errors due to misalign apertures and building sway, which have the potential to suppress the benefits of the relay assisted hybrid system. The impact of pointing errors and path loss attenuation are modeled with Gamma–Gamma distribution and generalised Nakagami-m is used to model the RF channel fading. The exact closed-form expressions of average symbol-error-rate (ASER) and outage-probability (OP) have been derived for the performance evaluation of the proposed system with and without pointing errors. We also present an asymptotic-analysis of the ASER and outage with lower computational-complexity for the proposed system and obtain the diversity order. To achieve target ASER value for the proposed switching scheme, the optimum-threshold signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) value has been obtained numerically in this work. The derived theoretical outcomes have been validated with Monte-Carlo simulation. In addition, we present comparative results of ASER and OP performance for proposed system with Gamma–Gamma and generalised Málaga distribution under various adverse weather conditions. It is observed that the proposed hybrid FSO/RF system outperforms a cooperative single FSO system as well as single-hop hybrid FSO/RF system on account of diversity as well as switching technique benefits. The presented hybrid FSO/RF system achieves ASER of 10 –7 in the lower SNR regimes.
