Abstract:Docking technology for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) involves energy supply, data exchange and navigation, and plays an important role to extend the endurance of the AUVs. The navigation method used in the transition between AUV homing and docking influences subsequent tasks. How to improve the accuracy of the navigation in this stage is important. However, when using ultra-short baseline (USBL), outliers and slow localization updating rates could possibly cause localization errors. Optical navigation methods using underwater lights and cameras are easily affected by the ambient light. All these may reduce the rate of successful docking. In this paper, research on an improved localization method based on multi-sensor information fusion is carried out. To improve the localization performance of AUVs under motion mutation and light variation conditions, an improved underwater simultaneous localization and mapping algorithm based on ORB features (IU-ORBSALM) is proposed. A nonlinear optimization method is proposed to optimize the scale of monocular visual odometry in IU-ORBSLAM and the AUV pose. Localization tests and five docking missions are executed in a swimming pool. The localization results indicate that the localization accuracy and update rate are both improved. The 100% successful docking rate achieved verifies the feasibility of the proposed localization method.

Abstract:Underwater mobile sensor networks (UMSNs) have the advantages of large area coverage, flexible network structure, and good local resolution. Particularly, spatial diversity can be exploited through node mobility to get more target information. To take those advantages in the context of regional cooperative target localization and tracking, a joint node scheduling and acoustic model fusion method is proposed for an UMSN consisting of multiple autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). First, a target tracking algorithm framework based on the random finite set theory is established. To take the acoustic environment into account, the a priori acoustic field and target distribution information are combined to evaluate the detection probability. A path-planning scheme with node scheduling is then developed based on the information gain to optimize the detection performance. To achieve effective node scheduling, three reward functions with different information gains respectively derived from the Rényi divergence and Fisher information matrix are proposed and compared. The rationale and the performance of the developed method are verified via simulations. A simplified version of the approach is also tested in field experiments with three AUVs, verifying the effectiveness of node scheduling in a realistic scenario.

Abstract:As Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) play an increasingly important role in ocean community, localization of AUVs is attracting more and more attention in various applications. This paper presents a simple iterative solution to passive localization of an AUV which has a periodic sonar transmission. The method exploits the time difference of sonar transmissions and receiving interval measurements using a single linear array. Simulations show that the method yields an effective source location estimator without using a complex receiving array configuration; in the meantime, it can be readily implemented in a real-time system with moderate computational complexity.

Abstract:In this paper, a new approach for localizing underwater sensor nodes is presented. Multi-autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are used in our method (in this paper we use four AUVs). Similar to a global satellite navigation system, each AUV broadcasts its position and the time when it sends its messages. Nodes in the communication range can receive the messages and detect the range differences from the four AUVs to the sensor nodes. Then we calculate their positions through trilateration by the range differences and the AUVs’ positions. Finally, both theoretical analysis and simulation results are given to confirm our method. There are many advantages in our approach: (1) it requires no time synchronization between nodes, but only requires time synchronization between the AUVs which can be easily achieved; (2) each AUV can run along a line, which makes the network nodes localization very fast and effective, and it is also easy for path planning; (3) one node can receive more than one message from one AUV, and we can get the node’s position more accurately.

Abstract:Underwater docking technology makes the long-term, on-station vehicle deployment possible, which can effectively save the recovery cost and ease the operational burden. To perform docking mission, autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) should have the capability to guide, navigate, and control itself into the docking station in a strategic manner. The navigation and guidance issues of AUV docking are addressed in the paper. Ultrashort baseline-based (USBL-based) navigation method is applied to home the vehicle to the dock station in relative long range. An integrated navigation algorithm based on extended Kalman filter (EKF) is studied, which takes acoustic outlier rejection into consideration. The software of navigation algorithm is implemented using Mission Oriented Operating Suite-Interval Programming (MOOS-IvP). Both the pool and lake tests are conducted to validate the proposed navigation system. Since the USBL sonar system can hardly navigate the vehicle entering the dock entrance with its error-bounded positioning accuracy, the more accurate vision guidance method is adopted instead of USBL navigation for terminal guidance. The combined performance of EKF navigation and vision guidance is validated by docking experiments. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the vision system for terminal guidance in spite of the bounded USBL positioning error.

Abstract:This paper presents a passive inverted Ultra-Short Baseline (piUSBL) positioning system which provides accurate and instantaneous positioning for small Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) at low cost and power consumption. Conventional underwater positioning systems tend to be expensive and bulky, limiting the application of small AUVs. This system is based on an iUSBL positioning system, which places a small circular receiver array on an AUV rather than on a deployment ship. The One-Way Travel-Time (OWTT) range and Direction of Arrival (DOA) between the vehicle and a single acoustic beacon enable AUV navigation relative to the beacon. Deconvolved conventional beamforming (dCv) provides high-resolution azimuth estimation. This paper describes the system design in detail and presents experimental results in an anechoic tank and some field lakes. The piUSBL system shows great potential for small AUVs after several successful AUV applications.

Abstract:Efficient and accurate water quality monitoring is of great significance to the development of marine resources,and autonomous underwater vehicle（AUV） has broad application prospects in marine environmental monitoring. There are problems such as low efficiency, poor reliability, insufficient coverage and poor positioning accuracy when a single AUV performs water quality sampling tasks for ocean scalar field estimation. The multi-AUV-based cooperative localization and adaptive sampling system was proposed. Each AUV in the system broadcasted the collected sampling data to its teammates, and based on the data received, it corrected the location of itself based on the extended Kalman filter. With the collected sampling data, the AUV modeled the environmental scalar field with a Gaussian process and used a differential evolution path planner to plan its subsequent sampling path online. Simulation results showed that the proposed method effectively reduced the positioning error of AUVs, and improved the estimation accuracy of the environmental scalar field.

Abstract:Underwater positioning presents a challenging issue, because of the rapid attenuation of electronic magnetic waves, the disturbances and uncertainties in the environment. Conventional methods usually employed acoustic devices to localize Unmanned Underwater Vehicles (UUVs), which suffer from a slow refresh rate, low resolution, and are susceptible to the environmental noise. In addition, the complex terrain can also degrade the accuracy of the acoustic navigation systems. The applications of underwater positioning methods based on visual sensors are prevented by difficulties of acquiring the depth maps due to the sparse features, the changing illumination condition, and the scattering phenomenon. In the paper, a novel visual-based underwater positioning system is proposed based on a Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) camera and an inertial measurement unit. The LiDAR camera, benefiting from the laser scanning techniques, could simultaneously generate the associated depth maps. The inertial sensor would offer information about its altitudes. Through the fusion of the data from multiple sensors, the positions of the UUVs can be predicted. After that, the Bundle Adjustment (BA) method is used to recalculate the rotation matrix and the translation vector to improve the accuracy. The experiments are carried out in a tank to illustrate the effects and accuracy of the investigated method, in which the ultra-wideband (UWB) positioning system is used to provide reference trajectories. It is concluded that the developed positioning system is able to estimate the trajectory of UUVs accurately, whilst being stable and robust.

Abstract:Underwater positioning is critical to autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) for navigation and geo-referencing. The rapid attenuation of the electromagnetic wave in the underwater environment prevents the use of traditional positioning methods such as the Global Positioning System, whereupon acoustic methods like ultra-short baseline (USBL) positioning systems play an important role in AUV navigation. However, the high cost and complexity of classical USBL systems have stifled the democratization of these technologies, which leads to a new method called passive inverted ultra-short baseline (piUSBL) positioning. In a typical piUSBL system, a single beacon is placed at a reference point, periodically broadcasting a positioning signal. A passive USBL receiver, time-synchronized to the beacon, is mounted on an AUV to get one-way travel-time (OWTT) slant range and azimuth estimates. The passive nature of the receiver means the system is inexpensive, low-power, and lightweight. Particularly, the omnidirectional broadcasted signals offer a feasible solution for concurrent multi-AUV navigation. This letter demonstrates a full-stack design and development of a piUSBL positioning system, and presents evaluations of the accuracy and reliability of the system through a series of experiments. More significantly, a successful sea trial of a disc-shaped AUV outfitted with our piUSBL was conducted in the South China Sea.
USV-AUV Collaboration Framework for Underwater Tasks under Extreme Sea Conditions

Abstract:Autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are valuable for ocean exploration due to their flexibility and ability to carry communication and detection units. Nevertheless, AUVs alone often face challenges in harsh and extreme sea conditions. This study introduces a unmanned surface vehicle (USV)-AUV collaboration framework, which includes high-precision multi-AUV positioning using USV path planning via Fisher information matrix optimization and reinforcement learning for multi-AUV cooperative tasks. Applied to a multi-AUV underwater data collection task scenario, extensive simulations validate the framework's feasibility and superior performance, highlighting exceptional coordination and robustness under extreme sea conditions. To accelerate relevant research in this field, we have made the simulation code available as open-source.

Abstract:AUV underwater docking is an effective way to provide energy supplement and complete information exchange with an AUV, which in turn allows an AUV make long-term missions in the water and avoid the need for repeated launching and retrieval. This paper proposes a new navigation and positioning system, which measures distance by underwater acoustic communication and by USBL. It can be used for underwater AUV remote positioning and guiding, so that an AUV can find the underwater feeder station in order to complete energy supply and exchange of information. The system consists of a T/R transducer at the end of the AUV; an electronic cabin within the chamber of the AUV, and, a T/R transducer USBL array and watertight electronic cabin at the end of underwater feeder station. For the hardware, the T/R transducers operating band is 10 kHz ~ 14kHz with overflow structure; there is a USBL array of conical structures; and, an electronic compartment which uses DSP, FPGA, M5P430 joint architecture. For the algorithms, the underwater acoustic communication equipment uses both LFM signal head and DSSS communication algorithms in order to obtain distance measurement results. The USBL array uses M sequence modulated signals emitted from the AUV terminal in order to measure direction. The system performance was tested in a lake, In the static case, the range accuracy was $\mathbf{0.2m\ \boldsymbol{\pm}\ 0.05\%,}$, and the orientation of the measurement accuracy is 0.3° In the dynamic case, the positioning results were compared with GPS Real-time results, and their positioning track fitted well with each other.

Abstract:The ultra-short baseline underwater positioning is one of the most widely applied methods in underwater positioning and navigation due to its simplicity, efficiency, low cost, and accuracy. However, there exists environmental noise, which has negative impacts on the positioning accuracy during the ultra-short baseline (USBL) positioning process, which results in a large positioning error. The positioning result may lead to wrong decision-making in the latter processing. So, it is necessary to consider the error sources, and take effective measurements to minimize the negative impact of the noise. In our work, we propose a USBL positioning system with Kalman filtering to improve the positioning accuracy. In this system, we first explore a new kind of element array to accurately capture the acoustic signals from the object. We then organically combine the Kalman filters with the array elements to filter the acoustic signals, using the minimum mean-square error rule to obtain accurate acoustic signals. We got the high-precision phase difference information based on the non-equidistant quaternary original array and the phase difference acquisition mechanism. Finally, on account of the obtained accurate phase difference information and position calculation, we determined the coordinates of the underwater target. Comprehensive evaluation results demonstrate that our proposed USBL positioning method based on the Kalman filter algorithm can effectively enhance the positioning accuracy.

Abstract:Ultrashort baseline (USBL) positioning system is an important part of the integrated navigation for underwater vehicles. The single USBL positioning system has problems such as reduced accuracy of azimuth measurement due to target motion and large impact of small angular variations, especially in the region where the target is close to the conical boundary, that is, the low-elevation region. To improve the positioning accuracy of the USBL-based integrated navigation system, a tightly coupled USBL/Dead Reckoning (DR) integrated localization algorithm that considers the time varying characteristics of the measurement noise was proposed, and the filtering model of the algorithm was designed. The algorithm exploits the mechanism of the azimuth measurement covariance variation of the USBL system, constructs an adaptive measurement noise estimator for the USBL system, and applies it to the integration filtering of USBL/DR data. A nonlinear extended Kalman filtering (EKF) model was used to fuse the USBL positioning and dead reckoning trajectories. A number of simulation tests with different elevation angle settings were performed to compare the performance of the proposed algorithm with that of a conventional EKF for underwater localization. The test results reveal that the proposed algorithm can effectively reduce the positioning error caused by the change in the relative azimuth of the acoustic signal owing the motion of the mother ship and the motion of the underwater vehicle.

A LiDAR SLAM-Assisted Fusion Positioning Method for USVs

Abstract:Confronted with unmanned surface vessel (USV) operations where GNSS signals are unavailable due to obscuration and other factors, a LiDAR SLAM-assisted fusion positioning method for USVs is proposed to combine GNSS/INS positioning with LiDAR-SLAM. When the USV works in wide-open water, the carrier phase differential GNSS/INS loosely coupled integration strategy is applied to fuse and calibrate the positioning data, and the positioning information of the USV is obtained through the coordinate conversion process. The system uses a dynamic switching strategy to enter to LiDAR-SLAM positioning when GNSS signals are not available, compensating the LiDAR data with precise angle information to ensure accurate and stable positioning. The experiments show that compared with the traditional Kalman filter and adaptive Kalman filter fusion algorithms, the positioning error is reduced by 55.4% and 43.5%. The velocity error is also limited by 78.2% and 57.9%. The standard deviation and the root mean square error are stable within 0.1 m, indicating that our method has better data stability, while the probability of positioning anomaly is effectively controlled.

Abstract:The operation of underwater vehicles in deep waters is a very challenging task. The use of AUVs (Autonomous Underwater Vehicles) is the preferred option for underwater exploration activities. They can be autonomously navigated and controlled in real time underwater, which is only possible with precise spatio-temporal information. Navigation and positioning systems based on LBL (Long-Baseline) or USBL (Ultra-Short-Baseline) systems have their own characteristics, so the choice of system is based on the specific application scenario. However, comparative experiments on AUV navigation and positioning under both systems are rarely conducted, especially in the deep sea. This study describes navigation and positioning experiments on AUVs in deep-sea scenarios and compares the accuracy of the USBL and LBL/SINS (Strap-Down Inertial Navigation System)/DVL (Doppler Velocity Log) modes. In practice, the accuracy of the USBL positioning mode is higher when the AUV is within a 60° observation range below the ship; when the AUV is far away from the ship, the positioning accuracy decreases with increasing range and observation angle, i.e., the positioning error reaches 80 m at 4000 m depth. The navigational accuracy inside and outside the datum array is high when using the LBL/SINS/DVL mode; if the AUV is far from the datum array when climbing to the surface, the LBL cannot provide accurate position calibration while the DVL fails, resulting in large deviations in the SINS results. In summary, the use of multi-sensor combination navigation schemes is beneficial, and accurate position information acquisition should be based on the demand and cost, while other factors should also be comprehensively considered; this paper proposes the use of the LBL/SINS/DVL system scheme.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose the cooperative coverage path planning (CPP) scheme for AUVs in integrated underwater acoustic communication and detection networks (UCDNs) to explore the unknown oceanic environment. Firstly, we design a virtual force-based task allocation strategy to allocate the coverage area for multiple AUVs. In addition, to provide the AUV with an adaptive and flexible path planning capability, we design a complete coverage path planning algorithm based on Q-learning (Q-CPP-C) in UCDNs with short path lengths and obstacle avoidance. Finally, the task is reallocated based on the residual energy of AUVs for the multi-cycle continuous operation. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed CPP scheme outperforms the baseline in terms of energy consumption and time consumption.
A Robust INS/USBL/DVL Integrated Navigation Algorithm Using Graph Optimization

Abstract:The Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) is usually equipped with multiple sensors, such as an inertial navigation system (INS), ultra-short baseline system (USBL), and Doppler velocity log (DVL), to achieve autonomous navigation. Multi-source information fusion is the key to realizing high-precision underwater navigation and positioning. To solve the problem, a fusion scheme based on factor graph optimization (FGO) is proposed. Due to multiple iterations and joint optimization of historical data, FGO could usually show a better performance than the traditional Kalman filter. In addition, considering that USBL and DVL are usually heavily influenced by the environment, outliers are often present. A robust integrated navigation algorithm based on a maximum correntropy criterion and FGO scheme is proposed. The proposed algorithm solves the problem of multi-sensor fusion and non-Gaussian noise. Numerical simulations and field tests demonstrate that the proposed FGO scheme shows a better performance and robustness than the traditional Kalman filter. Compared with the traditional Kalman filtering, the positioning accuracy is improved by 5.3%, 9.1%, and 5.1% in the east, north, and height directions. It can realize a more accurate navigation and positioning of underwater multi-sensors.

Abstract:This paper researches an AUV (Autonomous Underwater Vehicle) positioning method based on SINS (Strapdown Inertial Navigation System)/LBL (Long Base Line) tightly coupled algorithm. This algorithm mainly includes SINS-assisted searching method of optimum slant-range of underwater acoustic propagation multipath, SINS/LBL tightly coupled model and multi-sensor information fusion algorithm. Fuzzy correlation peak problem of underwater LBL acoustic propagation multipath could be solved based on SINS positional information, thus improving LBL positional accuracy. Moreover, introduction of SINS-centered LBL locating information could compensate accumulative AUV position error effectively and regularly. Compared to loosely coupled algorithm, this tightly coupled algorithm can still provide accurate location information when there are fewer than four available hydrophones (or within the signal receiving range). Therefore, effective positional calibration area of tightly coupled system based on LBL array is wider and has higher reliability and fault tolerance than loosely coupled. It is more applicable to AUV positioning based on SINS/LBL.
A Mixture Distribution-Based Robust SINS/USBL Integration Navigation With Time-Varying Delays

Abstract:Ultrashort baseline (USBL) systems play a crucial role in underwater navigation and localization. However, the positioning accuracy is susceptible to acoustic outliers and time-varying delays. To ensure the accuracy of measurements, acoustic results from the previous cycle are transmitted to the host computer at the beginning of the subsequent cycle. Localization errors induced by time-varying delays accumulate with the increasing acoustic period. To address these challenges, modified state and measurement equations are derived, compensating quickly and accurately for delays. Besides, a robust filter algorithm is proposed for time-varying non-Gaussian noise. The simulations demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can effectively suppress time-varying delays, and horizontal errors do not increase with the acoustic period. The horizontal positioning accuracy is improved by at least 68% compared to the other algorithms. Furthermore, the algorithm also shows excellent performance in the trial test and a 20% improvement in three-axis positioning errors. The proposed algorithm offers the advantage of improved localization accuracy and robustness, which makes it a valuable solution for addressing acoustic outliers and time-varying delays in USBL-based underwater navigation systems.

A Joint Graph-Based Approach for Simultaneous Underwater Localization and Mapping for AUV Navigation Fusing Bathymetric and Magnetic-Beacon-Observation Data

Abstract:Accurate positioning is the necessary basis for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUV) to perform safe navigation in underwater tasks, such as port environment monitoring, target search, and seabed exploration. The position estimates of underwater navigation systems usually suffer from an error accumulation problem, which makes the AUVs difficult use to perform long-term and accurate underwater tasks. Underwater simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) approaches based on multibeam-bathymetric data have attracted much attention for being able to obtain error-bounded position estimates. Two problems limit the use of multibeam bathymetric SLAM in many scenarios. The first is that the loop closures only occur in the AUV path intersection areas. The second is that the data association is prone to failure in areas with gentle topographic changes. To overcome these problems, a joint graph-based underwater SLAM approach that fuses bathymetric and magnetic-beacon measurements is proposed in this paper. In the front-end, a robust dual-stage bathymetric data-association method is used to first detect loop closures on the multibeam bathymetric data. Then, a magnetic-beacon-detection method using Euler-deconvolution and optimization algorithms is designed to localize the magnetic beacons using a magnetic measurement sequence on the path. The loop closures obtained from both bathymetric and magnetic-beacon observations are fused to build a joint-factor graph. In the back-end, a diagnosis method is introduced to identify the potential false factors in the graph, thus improving the robustness of the joint SLAM system to outliers in the measurement data. Experiments based on field bathymetric datasets are performed to test the performance of the proposed approach. Compared with classic bathymetric SLAM algorithms, the proposed algorithm can improve the data-association accuracy by 50%, and the average positioning error after optimization converges to less than 10 m.
