Abstract:The essence of plant ecological stoichiometry is to study the relationships between species and their environment, including nutrient absorption, utilization and cycling processes as well as the nutrient limitation of plants. Plants can regulate nutrient elements and adapt to environmental changes. To understand the adaptation mechanism, it is important to take plants as a whole and quantify the correlation between the chemometrics of different organs. Ammopiptanthus mongolicus is within the second-class group of rare–endangered plants in China and is the only evergreen broad-leaved shrub in desert areas. We analyzed the ecological stoichiometric characteristics of leaves, stems, roots, flowers and seeds of A. mongolicus in five habitats, namely fixed sandy land, semi-fixed sandy land, stony–sandy land, alluvial gravel slope and saline–alkali land. We found that (1) the nutrient contents of N, P and K were in the order of seed > flower > leaf > root > stem. The enrichment of the N, P and K in the reproductive organs promoted the transition from vegetative growth to reproductive growth. Additionally, (2) the contents of C, N, P and K and their stoichiometric ratios in different organs varied among different habitat types. The storage capacity of C, N and P was higher in sandy soil (fixed and semi-fixed sandy land), whereas the content of K was higher in gravelly soil (stony–sandy land and alluvial gravel slope), and the C:N, C:P and N:P were significantly higher in gravelly soil than those in sandy soil. A. mongolicus had higher nutrient use efficiency in stony–sandy land and alluvial gravel slope. Furthermore, (3) the C:N and N:P ratios in each organ were relatively stable among different habitats, whereas the K:P ratio varied greatly. The N:P ratios of leaves were all greater than 16 in different habitats, indicating that the growth was mainly limited by P. Moreover, (4) except for the P element, the content of each element and its stoichiometric ratio were affected by the interaction between organs and habitat. Habitat had a greater impact on C content, whereas organs had a greater influence on N, P and K content and C:N, C:P, C:K and N:P.

Abstract:The stoichiometric characteristics of leaves can reflect environmental adaptation of plants, and thus the study of the relationship between them is helpful for exploring plant adaptation strategies. In this study, taking the national second-level key protection species, Ammopiptanthus mongolicus, as the research object, we set up 26 plots to collect samples, and measured the content of carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and water use efficiency (WUE) of leaves. We analyzed the relationship between leaf stoichiometric characteristics and WUE, and quantified the contributions of soil, climate, and water use efficiency to the variations of leaf stoichiometry. The results showed that C, N, and P contents in the leaves were (583.99±27.93), (24.31±2.09), and (1.83±0.06) mg·g-1, respectively. The coefficients of variation were 4.8%, 8.6%, and 3.2%, respectively, all belonging to weak variability, indicating that foliar contents of C, N and P tended to a certain stable value. The average value of N:P was 13.3, indicating that the growth of A. mongolicus was mainly limited by N. WUE was not correlated with leaf C content, but was significantly positively correlated with leaf N and P contents and N:P, and significantly negatively correlated with C:N and C:P, indicating that there was a linear synergistic trend between WUE and leaf nutrient content. The main factors influencing leaf C content and C:P were climatic factors, the leaf N content and N:P were mainly affected by soil factors, and the water use efficiency mainly affected leaf P content and C:N, indicating that the driving factors of different stoichiometric characteristics were different. The results could help eva-luate the habitat adaptation of desert plants, which would provide a theoretical basis for the conservation and management of A. mongolicus.

Abstract:Ecological stoichiometry is the study of the balance of multiple chemical elements in ecological interactions,it plays an important role in determining plants and ecosystem nutrient supply and their balance. The content of leaf chemical element is restricted by environmental nutrient availability,especially the restricted nutrient. Leaf nitrogen(N)and phosphorus(P)concentrations are two of the key traits which make important effect on the function and dynamics of ecosystem. Leaf N,P and N∶P vary with different species and sites. Study on the plants leaf nutrient content(N,P)and its variance in extreme environment is important not only in revealing the plants nutrient requirement and soil nutrient supply capacity,but also in revealing the plants adaptability to environment. Three typical sorts of desert plants,named Haloxylon ammodendron,Tamarix ramosissma and Calligonum mongolicunl,were involved in the study to investigate the effects of different habitats(Taklimakan Desert Botanical Garden- Botanical Garden,Gurbantonggut desert no irrigation shelterbelt- no irrigation shelterbelt,as well as their original habitats-original habitat)on three kinds of plant leaves ecological stoichiometry. The Two-Way ANOVA was used to determine the difference of soil and leaf C,N,P content and its stoichiometric ratio with various habitats. The results are as follows:in arid region,the surface soil presented as alkaline soil,soil salinity was significantly higher(4 mS·cm-1)in the botanical garden than in other habitats(P 0.05),which can be explained as the saline irrigation and strong evaporation in this region. There is a similar trend of C,N,P content of soil in different habitats for both the original habitat and botanical gardens;T. ramosissma were higher,while the others were relatively low(P 0.05). However,the largest C∶N and C∶P were presented at T. ramosissma original habitats,botanical gardens,no irrigation shelterbelt,and H. ammodendron original habitats followed,and the smallest was C. mongolicunl original habitat.There was no significant difference for N∶P at different habitats(P 0.05),which indicates that the arid soil remains relatively stable N∶P. There are some differences for leaves C content of three plants,C. mongolicunl was the highest,T. ramosissma followed,H. ammodendron was relatively small(P 0.05),indicating that the there were some differences for C accumulation of three plants. However,plant leaf N,P content is mainly affected by the species,and the effects of habitats on plant leaves N,P content were not significant,the mean leaf N∶P is 15.91±0.68,and there is no significant difference between the different species in different habitats,this result indicates that leaves of plants in arid regions have a relatively constant N∶P. It also further illustrates the desert plants have relatively higher stability,thereby making them have a strong adaptability to extreme environment such as drought,barren and saline. The results of the research will be both a good supplement and a meaningful attempt for ecological stoichiometry in extreme environment.

Abstract:Stand origin significantly affects the C–N–P stoichiometry in the leaf‐litter‐soil system and leaf N and P reabsorption efficiency of the Mongolian pine. The N/P homeostasis of the plantation is greater than that of the natural forest. Environmental factors have a significant impact on the C–N–P stoichiometry of the Mongolian pine, particularly soil water content and precipitation. Ecological stoichiometry is an important approach to understand plant nutrient cycling and balance in the forest ecosystem. However, understanding of stoichiometric patterns through the leaf‐litter‐soil system of Mongolian pine among different stand origins is still scarce. Therefore, to reveal the variations in Mongolian pine carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) stoichiometry and stoichiometric homeostasis among different stand origins, we measured C, N, and P concentrations of leaves, litter, and soil, and analyzed the nutrient resorption efficiencies of leaves in differently aged plantations and natural forests from semi‐arid and dry sub‐humid regions. The results showed that (1) the stand origin had a significant effect on the C–N–P stoichiometry, and also significantly affected leaf N and P reabsorption efficiencies. Leaf N/P ratios indicated that Mongolian pine was co‐limited by N and P in the NF, HB and HQ, and was mainly limited by P in MU. (2) With increasing stand age, C concentrations in the leaf‐litter‐soil system initially increased and then decreased, the N and P concentrations and reabsorption efficiencies in the leaf‐litter‐soil system were gradually increased. Overall, stand age had a significant effect on N concentrations, C/N and C/P ratios in the leaf‐litter‐soil system. (3) The C and N elements between the leaf‐litter‐soil system had a strong coupling relationship, and the P element between litter‐soil had a strong coupling relationship. In addition, plantations exhibited greater N/P homeostasis than natural forests, and N/P exhibited greater homeostasis than N and P alone, which may be a nutrient utilization strategy for forests to alleviate N or P limitation. (4) Environmental factors have a significant influence on C–N–P stoichiometry in the leaf‐litter‐soil system, the most important soil properties and meteorological factors being soil water content and precipitation, respectively. These results will be essential to provide guidance for plantation restoration and management in desert regions.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to reveal the stoichiometric characteristics of carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus in rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soils of Pinus sylvestris var. mongolica in the Hulunbuir desert. We investigated the contents and stoichiometry of organic carbon, total nitrogen, and total phosphorus contents of rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soils across different stand ages (28, 37 and 46 a) of P. sylvestris var. mongolica plantations, with P. sylvestris var. mongolica natural forest as the control. We analyzed the correlation between soils properties and soil stoichiometry. The results showed that rhizosphere effect significantly affected soil N:P, and stand age significantly affected soil organic carbon content in P. sylvestris var. mongolica plantation. Soil organic carbon content in plantation was significantly lower than that in natural forest. Soil organic carbon and total nitrogen contents of plantations in both rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soils firstly decreased and then increased with increasing stand age, while total phosphorus firstly increased and then decreased in rhizosphere soils, and firstly decreased and then increased in non-rhizosphere soils. There was significant positive correlations between C:N and C:P in rhizosphere soils but not in non-rhizosphere soils, suggesting that higher synergistic rhizosphere soil N and P limitation. The mean N:P values of rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soils were 4.98 and 8.40, respectively, indicating that the growth of P. sylvestris var. mongolica was restricted by soil N and the rhizosphere soils were more N-restricted. The C:N:P stoichiometry of rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere soils were significantly influenced by soil properties, with available phosphorus being the most important driver. The growth of P. sylvestris var. mongolica was limited by N in the Hulunbuir desert, and root system played an obvious role in enriching and maintaining soil nutrients. It was recommended that soil nitrogen should be supplemented appropriately during the growth stage of P. sylvestris var. mongolica plantation, and phosphorus should be supplemented appropriately according to the synergistic nature of nitrogen and phosphorus limitation.

Abstract:The alpine sandy dune ecosystem is highly vulnerable to global climate change. Ecological stoichiometry in plants and soils plays a crucial role in biogeochemical cycles, energy flow and functioning in ecosystems. The alpine sandy dune ecosystem is highly vulnerable to global climate change. However, the stoichiometric changes and correlations of plants and soils among different types of sandy dunes have not been fully explored. Three sandy dune types (moving dune, MD; semifixed dune, SFD; and fixed dune, FD) of the Sophora moorcroftiana shrub in the middle reaches of the Yarlung Zangbo River were used as the subjects in the current study. Plant community characteristics, soil physicochemical properties, carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) contents of leaves, understorey herbs, litter, and soil microbes were evaluated to explore the C:N:P stoichiometry and its driving factors. Sandy dune type significant affected on the C:N:P stoichiometry in plants and soils. High soil N:P ratio was observed in FD and high plant C:P and N:P ratios in SFD and MD. The C:N ratio decreased with sand dune stabilization compared with other stoichiometric ratios of soil resources. Leaf C:P and N:P ratios in S. moorcroftiana were higher than those in the understorey herb biomass, because of the low P concentrations in leaves. C, N and P contents and stoichiometry of leaves, understorey herbs, litter and microbe were significantly correlated with the soil C, N and P contents and stoichiometry, with a higher correlation for soil N:P ratio. P was the mainly limiting factor for the growth of S. moorcroftiana population in the study area and its demand became increasingly critical with the increase in shrub age. The variation in the C:N:P stoichiometry in plants and soils was mainly modulated by the soil physicochemical properties, mainly for soil moisture, pH, available P and dissolved organic C. These findings provide key information on the nutrient stoichiometry patterns, element distribution and utilization strategies of C, N and P and as well as scrubland restoration and management in alpine valley sand ecosystems.

Abstract:Surface mining is a critical anthropogenic activity that significantly alters the ecosystem. Revegetation practices are largely utilized to compensate for these detrimental impacts of surface mining. In this study, we investigated the effects of five water (W) regimes [W 40 : 40%, W 48 : 48%, W 60 : 60%, W 72 : 72%, and W 80 : 80% of field capacity (FC)], five nitrogen (N) (N 0 : 0, N 24 : 24, N 60 : 60, N 96 : 96, and N 120 : 120 mg kg −1 soil), and five phosphorus (P) fertilizer doses (P 0 : 0, P 36 : 36, P 90 : 90, P 144 : 144, and P 180 : 180 mg kg −1 soil) on morpho-physiological and biochemical parameters of Ammopiptanthus mongolicus plants to assess the capability of this species to be used for restoration purposes. The results showed that under low W-N resources, A. mongolicus exhibited poor growth performance (i.e., reduced plant height, stem diameter, and dry biomass) in coal-degraded spoils, indicating that A. mongolicus exhibited successful adaptive mechanisms by reducing its biomass production to survive long in environmental stress conditions. Compared with control, moderate to high W and N-P application rates greatly enhanced the net photosynthesis rates, transpiration rates, water-use efficiency, chlorophyll (Chl) a , Chl b , total Chl, and carotenoid contents. Under low-W content, the N-P fertilization enhanced the contents of proline and soluble sugar, as well as the activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, and peroxidase in leaf tissues, reducing the oxidative stress. Changes in plant growth and metabolism in W-shortage conditions supplied with N-P fertilization may be an adaptive strategy that is essential for its conservation and restoration in the desert ecosystem. The best growth performance was observed in plants under W supplements corresponding to 70% of FC and N and P doses of 33 and 36 mg kg −1 soil, respectively. Our results provide useful information for revegetation and ecological restoration in coal-degraded and arid-degraded lands in the world using endangered species A. mongolicus .

Abstract:Background Sophora alopecuroides L. ( S. alopecuroides L.) is a perennial herb widely distributed throughout Xinjiang, China. It is characterized by its rapid diffusion ability. Methods To reveal the ecological mechanism of the rapid spread of S. alopecuroides, and to elucidate the ecological stoichiometric characteristics of C, N, and P (and the influencing factors) in the leaves of S. alopecuroides , leaves were sampled from four habitats—forest, roadside, farmland, and desert—across the Yili River Valley. The variation rules of the ecological stoichiometric characteristics of C, N, and P in the leaves of S. alopecuroides were analyzed. Correlations between the ecological stoichiometric characteristics of leaves and environmental factors were examined using redundancy analysis (RDA). Results (1) The C, N, and P contents of S. alopecuroides leaves were 391.30–533.10 g/kg, 8.90–43.14 g/kg, and 0.71–2.04 g/kg, respectively, and the C/N, C/P, and N/P ratios were 10.34–4.94, 209.05–698.73, and 10.78–31.43 respectively. (2) The C content and C/P ratio of S. alopecuroides leaves were the highest in the desert habitat, leaf N content and N/P ratio were the highest in the forest habitat, leaf P content was the highest in the farmland habitat, and the leaf C/N ratio was the highest in the roadside habitat. (3) RDA showed that available potassium (AK) and pH were the main factors affecting the ecological stoichiometric characteristics of S. alopecuroides leaves in Yili Valley ( p ≤ 0.05), and these factors were positively correlated with C, N, P, and N/P, and negatively correlated with C/P and C/N. AK was the dominant factor that affected the P content of S. alopecuroides leaves, and appropriate reduction of K fertilizer would be conducive to restraining the spread of S. alopecuroides . Soil C, N, P, and K content, soil organic matter (OM), nitrate nitrogen (NO 3 − -N), ammonium nitrogen (NH 4 + -N), and AK had no significant effect on the ecological stoichiometric characteristics of leaves ( p > 0.05).

Abstract:Ecological stoichiometric should be incorporated into management and nutrient impacted ecosystems dynamic to understand the status of ecosystems and ecological interaction. The present study focused on ecological stoichiometric characteristics of soil, and leaves, stems, and roots of different macrophytes after the banning of seine fishing in Shengjin Lake. For C, N, and P analysis from leaves, stems, roots, and soil to explore their stoichiometric ratio and deriving environmental forces, four dominant plant communities (Vallisneria natans, Zizania latifolia, Trapa natans and Carex schmidtii) were collected. The concentration of C, N, P and C: N: P ratio in leaves, stems, roots, and soil among the plant communities varied significantly. Along the depth gradient high C: N was measured in C.schmidtii soil (7.08±1.504) but not vary significantly (P >0.05). High C: P result was found in T.natans (81.14±43.88) and in V.natans soil (81.40±42.57) respectively with no significant difference (p>0.05). Besides, N: P ratio measured high in V. natans (13.7±4.05) and showed significant variation (P<0.05). High leaf C: N and N: P ratio was measured in C. schmidtii and V. natans respectively. Nevertheless, high leaf C: P ratio was measured in Z. latifolia. From the three studied organs, leaf C: N and N: P ratio showed high values compared to root and stems. The correlation analysis result showed that at 0-10cm depth soil organic carbon (SOC) correlated negatively with stem total phosphorus (STP), and root total nitrogen (RTN) (P<0.05) but positively strongly with leaf total phosphorus (LTP) and leaf total nitrogen (LTN) (P<0.01) respectively. Soil total nitrogen (STN) at 0-10cm strongly positively correlated with leaf total phosphorus (LTP) (P<0.01) and positively with RN: P and leaf total carbon (LTC) (P<0.05). Soil basic properties such as soil moisture content (SMC), bulky density (BD) and pH positively correlated with soil ecological stoichiometric characteristics. Redundancy analysis (RDA) result showed available nitrogen (AN), soil total nitrogen (STN), and available phosphorus (AP) were the potential determinants variables on plants stoichiometric characteristics.

Abstract:The ecological stoichiometric characteristics of soil elements have greatly enhanced our understanding of the circulation of soil nutrients. However, there is limited knowledge regarding the alteration of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus stoichiometric ratios in deep soil after afforestation. To examine the variations in stoichiometric ratios of soil elements with different vegetation types, restoration times, and soil depths, we collected soil samples from grassland, Caragana korshinskii shrubland, and Picea asperata forestland at different stand ages (10a, 25a, and 40a) in Xining City, which is located on the Loess Plateau. Our results showed that, at 25a, the carbon-to-nitrogen (C:N) and carbon-to-phosphorus (C:P) ratios were significantly higher in the grassland soil than under other vegetation types, whereas the nitrogen-to-phosphorus (N:P) ratio had no significant difference among the three vegetation types. At 40a, the ratios of soil C:N, C:P, and N:P in the shrubland were the highest. With the increasing of the restoration time, the ratios of soil C:N, C:P, and N:P in grassland with 25a became higher than for 40a or 10a. The ratios in the shrubland were highest at 40a, followed by 25a and then 10a, while the ratios in the forestland showed no significant difference. At 40a, the soil C:N, C:P, and N:P ratios of shrubland were highest at the soil depth of 40–100 cm. The soil C:N, C:P, and N:P ratios showed positive correlations with soil ammonium nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen, and the soil N:P ratios showed a negative correlation with soil available phosphorus. Plant diversity significantly influenced the soil stoichiometric ratio of the upper soil layer. In the upper soil layer (0–40 cm), species richness showed a positive correlation with soil C:N, C:P, and N:P ratios, and the Margalef index exhibited a positive correlation with soil C:N and C:P ratios. The results of this study indicate that the stoichiometric ratio and nutrient availability of Caragana korshinskii shrubland were the highest over time. Therefore, these findings can be served as a valuable reference for local revegetation and ecological restoration.

Abstract:Potentilla fruticosa , a major alpine shrubland type, is widely distributed across the Tibetan Plateau, and grazing is the most common disturbance in the shrublands of P. fruticosa . However, soil organic carbon (SOC), soil total nitrogen (STN), soil total phosphorus (STP), and their stoichiometry under different grazing intensities were unclear. In our study, we explored SOC, STN, STP, their stoichiometry, and their controlling factors in the grazing disturbance of heavy grazing (HG), moderate grazing (MG), light grazing (LG), and no grazing (NG) conditions in the Tibetan Plateau P. fruticosa shrublands. The grazing intensities were mainly assessed by considering the shrublands' ground cover, the indicators of the road density, the distance between sampling sites and cowshed or sheep shed, the amounts of cow and sheep dung, and vegetation that had been gnawed and stampeded. Our results indicated that soil physical properties of soil temperature and bulk density have decreasing trends with decreasing grazing intensities from HG to NG. The SOC, STN, STP, and soil C:N and C:P ratios have increasing trends with decreasing grazing intensities from HG to NG, while the changes in soil N:P ratio were relatively stable along grazing intensities. Our results indicated that HG generally had stronger effects on SOC, STN, and soil C:N and C:P ratios than NG, indicating substantial effects of grazing disturbance on biogeochemical cycles of SOC and STN in the shrubland ecosystems. Therefore, for the alpine shrubland of P. fruticosa , the HG should be avoided for sustainable cycling of soil nutrients and the balance of soil nutrient stoichiometry. The grazing types can directly affect plant conditions, and plant conditions can directly affect soil physical and chemical properties and litter standing crops. Finally, soil physicochemical properties and litter standing crop resulting from different grazing intensities directly control SOC, STN, and STP. For the soil stoichiometry, the soil's physical and chemical properties resulting from different grazing intensities have direct impacts on soil C:P and N:P ratios.

Characteristics and Influencing Factors of Ecological Stoichiometry of Shrub Fine Roots in the Alpine Region of Northwest China

Abstract:Understanding the relationships between nutrient content in plant roots and ecological stoichiometry is crucial for elucidating nutrient utilization strategies and material cycling in alpine plant communities. However, data characterizing the stoichiometric characteristics of plant roots in this region remain limited. In this study, we collected fine-root and soil samples from five common alpine shrub species—Salix gilashanica, Potentilla fruticosa, Caragana jubata, Caragana tangutica, and Berberis diaphana—to investigate the carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and phosphorus (P) stoichiometric characteristics of their fine roots and examine the potential nutrient control strategies based on the soil properties. Our analysis revealed that the mean C (541.38 g kg−1) and P (1.10 g kg−1) contents in the shrub fine roots exceeded the average levels of the plant roots in China. However, the mean N content (8.61 g kg−1) was lower than the global average. Notably, the mean C:N ratio (71.3) in these fine roots was significantly higher than the global average, whereas both the mean C:P ratio (527.61) and N:P ratio (8.11) were considerably lower. The N:P ratios in the fine roots of the five shrub species were below 14, indicating nitrogen limitation for growth in the degraded alpine shrub communities. Our findings indicate that soil available phosphorus (33.2%) and pH (20.5%) are the primary factors influencing the eco-stoichiometric characteristics of shrub fine roots in the Qilian Mountains. These findings provide valuable data and theoretical support for a better understanding of the role of shrub roots in nutrient cycling within alpine ecosystems.

Abstract:Researches on the ecological stoichiometry of forest vegetation at different growth stages under long-term human management activities and its driving factors will help to clarify how the limited nutrient resources are allocated at different growth stages of forests, providing a basis and suggestions for scientific cultivation of artificial forests. In subtropical China, the C:N:P stoichiometry of an ancient Torreya grandis ‘Merrillii’ community was measured in leaves, twigs, roots, soils, and soil microbes with age gradients of 0–50, 50–100, 100–300, 300–500, and more than 500 years. The results showed that the nutrient use varied with tree ages. The N and P concentrations in the leaves, twigs, and roots of T. grandis had the similar increasing trends with the increasing tree age, and the N concentrations in leaves in 0-50-year-old forests were significantly lower than those forests of other ages. Particularly, the N:P ratio of different organs was always below 10, reflecting limited N supply of plants. The soil C content increased with the increasing T. grandis forest ages while the soil microbe C showed a fluctuated trend. There was a higher correlation among the C, N and P contents and their ratios in leaves, twigs and roots of 0-50-year-old forests than that in soil microbes, but inversely at more than 500-year-old forests. The homeostasis analysis results showed that the roots and soil microbes are more indicative of soil nutrient availability. The results of redundancy analysis showed that acid phosphatase activity had the highest impact on soil microbes in 0–10 and 10–20 cm soil layers, confirming that the decomposition and transformation of P in soils is very active. Moreover, soil enzyme activity mediates the influence of soil microbes on soil N and P limitation. In summary, tree age can effect the plant–microbe–soil C:N:P stoichiometry of T. grandis forests. The growth of T. grandis is mainly restricted by N, and reasonable application of N fertilizer is needed to promote its growth.

Abstract:Mycorrhizal strategies include mycorrhizal statuses and mycorrhizal types, which are important reflections of the functional characteristics of ecosystems. The stoichiometry of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus in plant organs is an important part of ecosystem functions, which has an important impact on the nutrient cycle of the ecosystem. The concentration of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus played a crucial role in ecosystem functioning and dynamics. The purpose of this study is to provide theoretical basis and data support for improving the properties of global terrestrial ecosystems by exploring the impact of mycorrhizal strategies on the stoichiometry of C, N, and P in different shrub organs. In this study, stoichiometric patterns of carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in different shrub organs under different mycorrhizal status or types were analyzed at 725 samples across Northern China. Results showed that in different mycorrhizal status, the highest carbon concentration in shrub organs appeared in the facultatively mycorrhizal (FM) mycorrhizal status, and the highest nitrogen concentration appeared in the Non-mycorrhizal (NM) mycorrhizal status. Under different mycorrhizal types, the nitrogen concentration in the shrub organs under the arbuscular mycorrhiza (AM) mycorrhizal type was the highest, and the phosphorus concentration under the ecto-mycorrhiza (ECM) mycorrhizal type was the highest. In the OM or FM mycorrhizal status, the concentrations of C, N, and P in the stems and leaves increase with the increase of the concentrations of C, N, and P in the roots. In the NM mycorrhizal status, the N concentration in the stems and leaves increases with the increase of the N concentration in the roots. Under AM, AM+ECM, and ECM mycorrhizal type, the concentrations of C, N, and P are closely related in roots, stems and leaves. The content of plant nutrients in different organs is closely related. It turned out that mycorrhizal statuses or types are able to alter the allocation of C, N, and P in different organs, and the relationships of C, N, and P among different organs are able to present different trend with the varying of mycorrhizal statuses or types.

Abstract:Background and aimsPlant carbon (C), nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) levels and their stoichiometry and N uptake strategies are important aspects influencing vegetation composition and C dynamics in boreal peatlands. However, C, N and P levels and N sources of different plants remain poorly understood, which prevents a better assessment of plant responses to projected increasing N availability in boreal ecosystems with climate warming and increasing N deposition.MethodsWe investigated differences of leaf C, N and P concentrations and C and N isotopes (δ13C and δ15N) between graminoids and shrubs in 18 peatlands in northeastern China.ResultsEricoid mycorrhizal (ERM) and ectomycorrhizal (ECM) shrubs have higher C and P while lower C/N and C/P than nonmycorrhizal (NM) graminoids. Shrubs and graminoids have similar leaf N/P, mainly exhibiting N limitation or N and P co-limitation. ECM shrubs show higher N and lower δ15N than NM graminoids despite having similar rooting depths, indicating higher N availability and more uptake of 15 N-depleted organic N of ECM shrubs. However, deep-rooted ECM shrubs show slightly higher N than shallow-rooted ERM shrubs, and their δ15N differences are insignificant. Shallow-rooted ERM shrubs have higher N and lower δ15N than deep-rooted NM graminoids.ConclusionsOur results imply lower N and P use efficiencies of shrubs than graminoids, and the important role of mycorrhizal association in differentiating N availabilities and sources between shrubs and graminoids. These findings are useful for understanding peatland plant responses to environmental changes.

Abstract:Abstract Aims Understanding the regional pattern of leaf stoichiometry and its contributing variables are of importance for predicting plant responses to global change and modelling the productivity and nutrient fluxes of ecosystems. In this study, we investigated leaf stoichiometry of plants that sampled from Hexi Corridor, a typical arid region in China, and tried to explore the contribution variables on leaf stoichiometry along the geographic, climatic, and soil gradients. Methods In August 2012, 70 sites in Hexi Corridor were investigated. Plant leaves and soils from five equivalent plots within each site were sampled. C, N, and P contents of leaf and soil were measured. Important findings Compared with leaf N and P contents in regional and global scales, leaf N content in Hexi Corridor was close to them with the value of 20.19 mg g-1, while leaf P content was lower than them with the value of 1.34 mg g-1. Overall, leaf N:P value in Hexi Corridor was 15.70. Individually, leaf N:P values of shrubs and herbs were 16.81 and 14.80, respectively. Scaling exponents for leaf N vs. P of overall and shrubs in Hexi Corridor were 1.29, higher than the scaling exponent of herbs (1.08). Leaf stoichiometry of shrubs and herbs did not show significant latitudinal and longitudinal patterns, meanwhile, it has no significant correlation with mean annual precipitation (MAP), mean annual temperature (MAT), and soil elements. However, only leaf stoichiometry of herbs has significant correlation with altitude and aridity degree. These results indicate that plants in Hexi Corridor are possibly co-limited by N and P, while shrubs are mainly limited by soil P and herbs are limited by soil N. Scaling relationship reveals that leaf N vs. P of herbs is isometric. With increasing altitude, the quadratic regression for leaf C and N contents and the linear regression for leaf P content of herbs reflect the difference responses of the three elements on the variation of MAT along the altitude and it could be explained by plant physiology hypothesis and biogeochemical hypotheses. With decreasing aridity, leaf N and N:P of herbs increased significantly, inferring that herbs growth would be limited by P increasingly and strengthening the increasing nitrogen availability with increasing precipitation. In conclusion, different altitude and aridity patterns for leaf stoichiometry of herbs and shrubs reveal the plastic survive strategies of different xerophytes in Hexi Corridor. Moreover, leaf stoichiometry of herbs in Hexi Corridor could be as indicator of the changing environment that caused by aridity.

Abstract:Ecological stoichiometry is crucial in understanding nutrient dynamics and its impact on plant growth and development at various ecological scales. Among the different nutrients, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) have been widely recognized as key elements regulating substance transport, energy utilization, and ecosystem conversion. The N:P ratio in plants serves as a sensitive indicator of ecological processes, reflecting the availability and balance of these nutrients. Therefore, studying the ecological stoichiometry of N and P is essential for accurately assessing soil fertility and site productivity, particularly in forest ecosystems with low-fertility soils. In this study conducted in Huitong, Hunan province, southern China, the contents of N and P, as well as the N:P ratios, were investigated in plant-soil systems across four different aged stands of Chinese fir forests (3-, 8-, 18-, and 26-year-old stands). The results revealed varying concentrations of N and P in soils and foliage across the different plantations. Soil N concentrations increased by approximately 4%, 30%, and 22% in 8-, 18-, and 26-year-old plantations compared to the 3-year-old plantation. Soil P concentration was significantly higher in 8-, 18-, and 26-year-old plantations compared to the 3-year-old plantation. The average soil N:P ratio followed the order of 3-year-old plantation > 18-year-old plantation > 26-year-old plantation > 8-year-old plantation. Regarding foliage, both N and P contents exhibited a similar pattern across the different aged leaves, with current-year-old leaves having higher concentrations than 1-year-old, 2-year-old, and 3-year-old leaves in all four Chinese fir plantations. The study further established relationships between soil and foliage nutrient ratios. Soil N:P ratio was positively correlated with soil N content but negatively associated with soil P content. The foliage N:P ratio also showed a significant negative correlation between leaf N and foliage P content. These findings suggest that soil nutrient conditions improved with the aging of Chinese fir plantations, mainly due to increased inputs of above- and below-ground litter. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the ecological stoichiometry of N and P in Chinese fir plantations, offering a scientific basis for sustainable forest management practices in southern China.

Abstract:We analyzed the contents and stoichiometric ratios of carbon (C), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in leaves and fine roots of Machilus pauhoi (an evergreen broad-leaved species), Cerasus campanulata (a deciduous broad-leaved species) and Fokienia hodginsii (an evergreen coniferous species) to compare the leaf and root stoichiometry and allometric relationship between different functional groups of trees. There were significant difference in the contents and stoichiometry of C, N and P in the leaves and fine roots among different functional groups. C content, C/N and C/P of the leaves and roots were the highest in M. pauhoi. N content and N/P of the leaves and roots were the highest in C. campanulata, whereas P content of the leaves and roots was the highest in F. hodginsii. The allometric relationship of C, N and P contents as well as their stoichiometric ratios between the leaves and fine roots showed significant difference, which was affected by functional difference. The allometric relationship between C/P and N/P with significantly different allometric indexes in leaves in seedlings of those three tree species, while the isometric relationship between the contents of N and P was found in fine roots. There were significant difference in the C, N and P stoichiometry between the leaves and fine roots. The allometric relationship between leaf C content and root P content in M. pauhoi was detected. C and N contents and C/N, N/P in leaves generally had the allometric or isokinetic relationships with C/N, N/P of fine roots. There were allometric relationships between the leaf C content and the root C, N and P contents in F. hodginsii. It was concluded that nutrient allocation between leaves and fine roots of C. campanulata was more strongly coordinated. The investment strategy of P for leaves and fine roots across those three tree species was similar. The results provided scientific reference for accurate nutrient management at seedling stage and efficient cultivation technique.

Abstract:PurposeVegetation restoration is an effective measure for improving the function of soil ecosystems and promoting the biogeochemical cycling of carbon (C), total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP). Here, we aimed to quantify the fine-scale (pedon scale) spatial distribution of soil C, N, P and soil physical–chemical properties in the Mu Us Desert ecosystems.MethodsWe systematically evaluated the effects of A. ordosica on fine-scale (pedon scale) spatial distribution of C, TN, TP, soil-available nutrients, and liable organic carbon (LOC) and their stoichiometric characteristics in the semiarid Mu Us Desert in the 0–100-cm soil profiles at various distances from the plant.Results and discussionThe results demonstrated that soil organic carbon (SOC), TN and LOC were decreased with increasing distance from the plant and soil depth. SOC stocks at 20 cm were 16.98% higher than those at 120 cm from the plant. SOC stocks at 20, 60 and 120 cm from the plant were increased by 71.62%, 58.14% and 46.72% compared with shifting sandy land (Sland), respectively. Microbial biomass carbon (MBC) and readily oxidised organic carbon (ROOC) were significantly affected by different soil layers and distances and their interaction (p < 0.05), whereas dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was affected by the soil layers. TN and soil-available nutrients in the surface layer and at closer distances to the plant were higher than those in the sublayer and Sland. The ratio of C:N:P was generally decreased with different distances from the plant and different soil layers. The ratios of soil C:N, C:P and N:P were significantly different at different soil layers, whereas the ratios of soil C:P and N:P were significantly different at different distances from the plant (p < 0.05). Soil C:P ratio was positively correlated with soil C:N and N:P ratios (p < 0.001). N and P contents in leaves were higher than those in roots, branches and litter, but C contents in leaves were lower than those in other plant tissues and litter (p < 0.01). N:P ratio in leaves (13.94) showed that there was a shortage of N and P in the Mu Us Desert ecosystems.ConclusionsWe concluded that A. ordosica could enhance the accumulation of SOC, LOC and N on a fine scale and improve mineral-nutrient availability in semiarid deserts and, as a result, the function of soil ecosystems could be improved. Moreover, the limitation of N and P can be alleviated by adding additional N and P.

Abstract:Introduction: The ecological stoichiometric ratio of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus is an important index to understand the utilization and distribution of plant nutrients. Method: To explore how leaf carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus contents, along with the stoichiometric ratio of different life forms of plants, respond to variations in altitude and soil physical and chemical properties, leaves and soil samples were collected from different life forms of plants at different altitudes (1,100~1,700 m) within the Guozigou region of the forest. Subsequently, the contents and ratios of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus in the leaves, as well as the physicochemical properties of the soil, were determined. Results: The results showed the following: (1) The three life forms of plants in the study area showed that the coefficient of variation of leaf carbon content was the smallest and the distribution was the most stable, while the coefficient of variation of carbon–nitrogen ratio was the largest. (2) Altitude had a significant effect on the carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus contents of different life form of plants, among which the leaf nitrogen content of trees, shrubs, and herbs increased significantly with altitude ( p < 0.01), the leaf phosphorus content of trees increased significantly with altitude ( p < 0.01), and the leaf C:N of the three life form of plants decreased significantly with altitude ( p < 0.01). The C:P of the arbor decreased significantly with altitude ( p < 0.05), and the N:P of shrub and herb leaves increased significantly with altitude ( p < 0.01). (3) Soil organic carbon and soil moisture content were the main environmental factors affecting the changes of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus in leaves of arbors, and nitrate nitrogen was the main environmental factor affecting the changes of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus in leaves of shrubs. Available phosphorus affected the changes of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus in the leaves of herbaceous plants. Discussion: The results provide new insights into community-level biogeographical patterns and potential factors of leaf stoichiometry among plant life forms.
