Abstract:The occurrence of excessive ammonium in groundwater threatens human and aquatic ecosystem health across many places worldwide. As the fate of ammonium in groundwater systems is often affected by a complex mixture of transport and biogeochemical transformation processes, identifying the sources of groundwater ammonium is an important prerequisite for planning effective mitigation strategies. Elevated ammonium was found in both a shallow and an underlying deep groundwater system in an alluvial aquifer system beneath an agricultural area in the central Yangtze River Basin, China. In this study we develop and apply a novel, indirect approach, which couples the random forest classification (RFC) of machine learning method and fluorescence excitation-emission matrices with parallel factor analysis (EEM-PARAFAC), to distinguish multiple sources of ammonium in a multi-layer aquifer. EEM-PARAFAC was applied to provide insights into potential ammonium sources as well as the carbon and nitrogen cycling processes affecting ammonium fate. Specifically, RFC was used to unravel the different key factors controlling the high levels of ammonium prevailing in the shallow and deep aquifer sections, respectively. Our results reveal that high concentrations of ammonium in the shallow groundwater system primarily originate from anthropogenic sources, before being modulated by intensive microbially mediated nitrogen transformation processes such as nitrification, denitrification and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium (DNRA). By contrast, the linkage between high concentrations of ammonium and decomposition of soil organic matter, which ubiquitously contained nitrogen, suggested that mineralization of soil organic nitrogen compounds is the primary mechanism for the enrichment of ammonium in deeper groundwaters.

Abstract:The increase in intracellular Ca2+ concentration [( Ca2+]i) in cytolytic T lymphocytes in response to target cell binding was investigated by ratio image fluorescence microscopy. Ca2+ mobilization from intracellular stores occurred at a site distal to target cell contact and was transient. Extracellular Ca2+ influx resulted in an increase in [Ca2+]i that was prolonged and distributed more proximal to the target cell. Oscillations in [Ca2+]i were observed after target cell contact, although the periodicity was dependent on the presence of extracellular Ca2+. The Ag-specific reorientation of cytoplasmic granules occurred well after [Ca2+]i had begun to decline to a resting level, but was dependent on extracellular Ca2+. These studies indicate that the Ag-stimulated increase in [Ca2+]i exhibits considerable spatial and temporal variation, and that these characteristics are altered by the availability of extracellular Ca2+. The results also suggest that these changes in [Ca2+]i may play a role in the cytoplasmic events that accompany T cell-mediated cytolysis.
Spatiotemporal variability and control factors of NO 3 − in a polluted karst water system of an agricultural wetland in South China

Abstract:Nitrate (NO 3 − ) pollution in karst water is an important environmental issue in intensive agricultural regions worldwide. The integrated understanding of the spatiotemporal variability and control factors of NO 3 − pollution in karst water is imperative for controlling the diffuse pollution caused by agricultural activities. In this study, 49 water samples were collected from surface water (SW) and groundwater (GW) in the Huixian karst wetland (HKW) and analyzed using hydrogeochemical and isotopic data (δ 18 O–NO 3 – , δ 15 N–NO 3 – and δ 13 C DIC ) in combination with a Bayesian mixing model to investigate the spatiotemporal distribution and control factors in NO 3 − -polluted karst water. The results showed that approximately 40.82% of the karst water samples exceeded the natural threshold value of 3 mg/L for NO 3 − -N, and 32.14% of the GW samples exceeded the permissible limit for drinking water established by WHO (10 mg/L as NO 3 − -N), indicating that high levels of NO 3 − were mainly found in GW samples from the agricultural core area, especially in the dry season. The NH 4 + -synthetic fertilizer (NHF) and soil organic nitrogen (SON) were the dominant factors controlling pollution sources in the HKW, accounting for 36.13% ± 4.66% and 28.68% ± 4.75% of the karst GW NO 3 − concentration, respectively. However, the seasonal differences in NO 3 − pollution sources were not significant in GW. Microbial nitrification was the main process affecting the NO 3 − levels in GW, whereas the occurrence of denitrification did not significantly affect NO 3 − concentration in the HKW due to the relatively low rate. Moreover, the HNO 3 produced from NH 4 + via microbial nitrification facilitated carbonate weathering, thereby controlling NO 3 − enrichment in karst GW. Our results suggest that NHF should be controlled to prevent further GW pollution in the HKW. Our study also provides a scientific basis for understanding the factors controlling the NO 3 − concentrations in karst water systems.

Abstract:Ammonia has been of concern for its high toxicity to aquatic species and frequent detection in waters worldwide. This study calculated the national aquatic life criteria for ammonia in China. The temporal and spatial distributions were investigated and the multi-tier ecological risks were assessed for ammonia and un-ionized ammonia (NH3) during 2014–2018 based on a total of 18989 ammonia monitoring data from 110 monitoring sites in seven river basins. The sensitivity comparison of different species taxa to ammonia showed that Perciformes fish should be listed as a priority protected species in the derivation of ammonia criteria. The participation of introduced aquaculture species have no significant impact on the final criteria values (t-test, p > 0.05). The final criterion maximum concentration (CMC) and criterion continuous concentration (CCC) were 10.24 and 3.31 mg/L for ammonia (pH 7.0 and 20 °C). The interannual variation showed that decreasing trends were observed for ammonia and NH3 pollutions in the past five years. However, the increasing trends were observed for ammonia in Liao River basin, for NH3 in Yangtze River and Pearl River basins (2014–2018). The significant seasonal and geographical differences of ammonia and NH3 pollution were found. Moreover, the pollutions of ammonia and NH3 in some monitoring points of Huai River, Yellow River and Songhua River basins at the provincial borders were significant. The result of ecological risk assessment showed that the average exceedance probability for 5% affected species by NH3 in long-term exposure was 28.96% in the past five years.
Nitrate Source Apportionment in a Subtropical Watershed Using Bayesian Model

Abstract:Nitrate (NO3-) pollution in aquatic system is a worldwide problem. The temporal distribution pattern and sources of nitrate are of great concern for water quality. The nitrogen (N) cycling processes in a subtropical watershed located in Changxing County, Zhejiang Province, China were greatly influenced by the temporal variations of precipitation and temperature during the study period (September 2011 to July 2012). The highest NO3- concentration in water was in May (wet season, mean±SD=17.45±9.50 mg L(-1)) and the lowest concentration occurred in December (dry season, mean±SD=10.54±6.28 mg L(-1)). Nevertheless, no water sample in the study area exceeds the WHO drinking water limit of 50 mg L(-1) NO3-. Four sources of NO3(-) (atmospheric deposition, AD; soil N, SN; synthetic fertilizer, SF; manure & sewage, M&S) were identified using both hydrochemical characteristics [Cl-, NO3-, HCO3-, SO42-, Ca2+, K+, Mg2+, Na+, dissolved oxygen (DO)] and dual isotope approach (δ15N-NO3- and δ(18)O-NO3-). Both chemical and isotopic characteristics indicated that denitrification was not the main N cycling process in the study area. Using a Bayesian model (stable isotope analysis in R, SIAR), the contribution of each source was apportioned. Source apportionment results showed that source contributions differed significantly between the dry and wet season, AD and M&S contributed more in December than in May. In contrast, SN and SF contributed more NO3- to water in May than that in December. M&S and SF were the major contributors in December and May, respectively. Moreover, the shortcomings and uncertainties of SIAR were discussed to provide implications for future works. With the assessment of temporal variation and sources of NO3-, better agricultural management practices and sewage disposal programs can be implemented to sustain water quality in subtropical watersheds.

Abstract:This paper elucidates the hydrochemical process of the Sanjiang Plain in entirety, considering geological conditions that alter significantly from upstream to downstream, and it is concluded that ammonium exceeding standard in groundwater is from natural sources. This study investigates the chemical characteristics, formation, and sources of inorganic nitrogen (IN) of shallow groundwater across the Sanjiang Plain, aiming to enhance drinking water safety management and pollution control. A total of 167 groundwater and 27 surface water samples were collected for constituents and isotopes (H2 and O18). The hydrogeochemical characteristics showed that the major type is HCO3‐ Ca·Mg, with low total dissolved solids and a neutral to weak alkaline nature. Rock weathering processes govern the hydrochemical composition of groundwater. Hydrogen and oxygen stable isotopes analyses revealed that precipitation serves as the main water source. In alluvial areas, oxidative conditions lead to the enrichment of NO3‐N concentrations, with sewage, manure, and fertilizers being the primary IN sources. In lacustrine areas, intensive rice cultivation results in reductive conditions and strong denitrification processes, causing the loss of NO3‐N and leaving NH4‐N as the dominant IN form. Organic matter mineralization is likely a more significant contributor to NH4‐N concentrations than ammonium fertilizers. These findings provide valuable information for further research on natural sources and groundwater pollution in areas with similar hydrogeological conditions. Spatiotemporal Patterns and Source Attribution of Nitrogen Load in A River Basin with Complex Pollution Sources

Abstract:Environmental problems such as eutrophication caused by excessive nutrient discharge are global challenges. There are complex pollution sources of nitrogen (N) discharge in many river basins worldwide. Knowledge of its pollution sources and their respective load contributions is essential to developing effective N pollution control strategies. N loads from all known anthropogenic pollution sources in the Upper Huai River basin of China were simulated with the process-based SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model. The performances of SWAT driven by daily and hourly rainfall inputs were assessed and it was found that the one driven by hourly rainfall outperformed the one driven by daily rainfall in simulating both total nitrogen (TN) and ammonia nitrogen (NH4-N) loads. The hourly SWAT model was hence used to examine the spatiotemporal patterns of TN and NH4-N loads and their source attributions. TN load exhibited significant seasonal variations with the largest in summer and the smallest in spring. Despite its declining proportion of contribution downstream, crop production remained the largest contributor of TN load followed by septic tanks, concentrated animal feedlot operations (CAFOs), municipal sewage treatment plants, industries, and scattered animal feedlot operations (SAFOs). There was much less seasonal variation in NH4-N load. CAFOs remained the largest source of NH4-N load throughout the basin, while contributions from industries and municipal sewage treatment plants were more evident downstream. Our study results suggest the need to shift the focus of N load reduction from "end-of-pipe" sewage treatment to an integrated approach emphasizing stakeholder involvement and source prevention.
New insights into the controlling factors of nitrate spatiotemporal characteristics in groundwater of Dagu aquifer in Qingdao, China

Abstract:Identifying spatiotemporal variation of groundwater NO3-N and its primary controlling factors are vital for groundwater protection. This study, under the data scarce conditions and based on time series monitoring data in Dagu aquifer, applied methods including hydrochemical ion ratio, multiple linear regression, support vector regression and grey relational analysis and dedicated to revealing primary controlling factors of temporal variation patterns of groundwater NO3-N. The results showed that agricultural and manure fertilizer are the main sources of NO3-N in north and central area (vegetable farming area), and that domestic sewage discharge and manure fertilizer are the main sources of NO3-N in south area (residential and grain planting area). In addition, results identified the dominant influencing factors of variation of NO3-N in different regions, with human wastewater discharge, nitrogen load amount and water-table depth being the dominant factors of variations of NO3-N in north area, human wastewater discharge being the main factor of variations of NO3-N in central area, and irrigation water and human wastewater being the leading factors of variations of NO3-N in south area. Moreover, types of controlling factors can influence the seasonal variations of NO3-N. NO3-N in vegetable farming area that dominantly affected by fertilization generally shows higher concentration and larger variation range of concentration during summer and autumn than that during spring. NO3-N which mainly affected by human wastewater discharge and manure inputs shows minimal seasonal variation of mean concentration. NO3-N in grain area influenced by irrigation could show more significant variations during spring and autumn than that during summer. The conclusions can enhance understandings of major influencing factors on NO3-N variation in local aquifer. Importantly, the dominant roles of water-table depth and irrigation in NO3-N variation of N2 site (vegetable planting area) and S5 site (grain planting area), respectively, were highlighted.
The impact of land use and socio-economic factors on ammonia nitrogen pollution in Weihe River watershed, China

Abstract:Rapid socio-economic development has led to a significant deterioration in the water environment, which has limited sustainable regional development. The soil and water assessment tool (SWAT) and statistical regression method were used to model the ammonia nitrogen (NH4+-N) pollution and explore the impacts of land use and socio-economic factors on NH4+-N pollution within the Weihe River watershed in China from 2015 to 2018. The result of SWAT model revealed that the NH4+-N concentrations were usually relatively high under low runoff conditions and relatively low under high runoff conditions. The average NH4+-N concentration in the upper reaches was 0.77 mg/L, whereas it was 0.87 mg/L in the middle and lower reaches of the watershed. Serious NH4+-N pollution mainly occurred in 2015 and 2016, and the V (2.0 mg/L) and V+ (>2.0 mg/L) water quality classes were associated with approximately 6.67% and 28.94% of the total watershed area, respectively. The multiple linear regression indicated that the building land and secondary industry were the significant controlling factors (P < 0.01). According to the scenario analysis, modelled scenarios for interception measures reduced the NH4+-N load to a greater degree than scenarios for source control measures. To improve the surface water quality in the Weihe River, it is recommended to adjust industrial structure, increase sewage treatment, and strengthen the rural management of the watershed.

Abstract:Nitrate (NO3-) pollution of groundwater is a global concern in agricultural areas. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the sources and destiny of nitrate in soil and groundwater within intensive agricultural areas, this study employed a combination of chemical indicators, dual isotopes of nitrate (δ15N-NO3- and δ18O-NO3-), random forest model, and Bayesian stable isotope mixing model (MixSIAR). These approaches were utilized to examine the spatial distribution of NO3- in soil profiles and groundwater, identify key variables influencing groundwater nitrate concentration, and quantify the sources contribution at various depths of the vadose zone and groundwater with different nitrate concentrations. The results showed that the nitrate accumulation in the cropland and kiwifruit orchard at depths of 0-400 cm increased, leading to subsequent leaching of nitrate into deeper vadose zones and ultimately groundwater. The mean concentration of nitrate in groundwater was 91.89 mg/L, and 52.94% of the samples exceeded the recommended grade III value (88.57 mg/L) according to national standards. The results of the random forest model suggested that the main variables affecting the nitrate concentration in groundwater were well depth (16.6%), dissolved oxygen (11.6%), and soil nitrate (10.4%). The MixSIAR results revealed that nitrate sources vary at different soil depths, which was caused by the biogeochemical process of nitrate. In addition, the highest contribution of nitrate in groundwater, both with high and low concentrations, was found to be soil nitrogen (SN), accounting for 56.0% and 63.0%, respectively, followed by chemical fertilizer (CF) and manure and sewage (M&S). Through the identification of NO3- pollution sources, this study can take targeted measures to ensure the safety of groundwater in intensive agricultural areas.

Abstract:Groundwater in the aquifers of Chinese cities suffer from severe nitrate pollution. Accurate identification of nitrate sources throughout the whole aquatic system is the key to the management of water nitrate pollution. This study investigated nitrogen (N) components of groundwater for twelve years, and analyzed the sources of nitrate in the aquatic system based on dual isotopic (δ15N-NO- 3 and δ18O-NO- 3) in the city of Nanjing, a core city of the Yangtze River delta region, China. Our results find that the ratio of nitrate to the sum of ammonia and nitrate in groundwater show an increasing trend from the period 2010-2021. Nitrate concentration was positively correlated with the proportion of cultivated land and negatively correlated with the proportion of forest land in the buffer zone. The relationship between Cl- and NO- 3/ Cl- showed that agriculture and sewage sources increased during 2010-2015, sewage source increased during 2016-2018; agriculture source increased during 2019-2021. Manure and sewage are the primary sources of groundwater nitrate (72%). There is no significant difference between developed land (78%), cultivated land (69%) and aquaculture area (72%). This indicates that the dense population and intensive aquaculture in the suburbs shows a significant impact on the nitrate pollution. The contribution of manure and sewage to the nitrate source in the lower reaches of the Qinhuai River basin is 61%. The non-point source pollution, including soil N (35%) and groundwater N (39%), is 74% over the upper reaches. Our study highlights the necessity of developing different N pollution management strategies for different parts in highly urbanized watersheds. Consider groundwater restoration and soil N management as a momentous long-term task.
Spatiotemporal Variation in Groundwater Quality and Source Apportionment along the Ye River of North China Using the PMF Model

Abstract:Groundwater quality deterioration has attracted widespread concern in China. In this research, the water quality index (WQI) and a positive matrix factorization (PMF) model were used to assess groundwater quality and identify pollution sources in the Ye River area of northern China. Research found that TH, SO42−, and NO3− were the main groundwater pollution factors in the Ye River area, since their exceeding standard rates were 78.13, 34.38, and 59.38%, respectively. The main groundwater hydrochemical type has changed from HCO3-Ca(Mg) to HCO3·SO4-Ca(Mg). These data indicated that the groundwater quality was affected by anthropogenic activities. Spatial variation in groundwater quality was mainly influenced by land use, whereas temporal variation was mainly controlled by rainfall. The WQI indicated that the groundwater quality was better in the flood season than in the dry season due to the diluting effect of rainfall runoff. Notably, farmland groundwater quality was relatively poor as it was affected by various pollution sources. Based on the PMF model, the main groundwater pollution sources were domestic sewage (52.4%), industrial wastewater (24.1%), and enhanced water–rock interaction induced by intensely exploited groundwater (23.6%) in the dry season, while in the flood season they were domestic sewage and water–rock interaction (49.6%), agriculture nonpoint pollution (26.1%), and industrial wastewater and urban nonpoint pollution (23.9%). In addition, the mean contribution of domestic sewage and industrial sewage to sampling sites in the dry season (1489 and 322.5 mg/L, respectively) were higher than that in the flood season (1158 and 273.6 mg/L, respectively). To sum up, the point sources (domestic sewage and industrial wastewater) remain the most important groundwater pollution sources in this region. Therefore, the local government should enhance the sewage treatment infrastructure and exert management of fertilization strategies to increase the fertilizer utilization rate and prevent further groundwater quality deterioration.

Isotopic characteristics and source analysis of atmospheric ammonia during agricultural periods in the Xichuan area of the Danjiangkou Reservoir

Abstract:Nitrogen deposition is an important means of exogenous nitrogen input in reservoir water. Agricultural activities around the reservoir lead to a sharp increase in the concentration of ammonia in the atmosphere, which poses a threat to the reservoir water body. Clarifying the contribution of agricultural ammonia release to atmospheric NH x (gaseous NH3 and particulate NH4 +), in the reservoir area can provide a theoretical foundation for local reactive nitrogen control. We collected atmospheric NH3 and NH4 + samples during the agricultural periods and analyzed the isotopic characteristics of atmospheric NH x and the contribution rates of different ammonia sources in the Xichuan area of the Danjiangkou Reservoir. The results showed that the initial δ15N values of NH3 (–30.0‰ to –7.2‰) and particulate NH4 +(–33‰ to +4.9‰ for finer and coarser particles, respectively) are different, and their contribution ratios from dissimilar ammonia sources are also different, among which NH4 + is more susceptible to meteorological factors. However, since the atmospheric NH x in the Xichuan area is mainly gaseous NH3, the final sources of atmospheric ammonia nitrogen source depend on gaseous NH3. Agricultural sources (59%-74%) were the main NH3 sources in this area. Among them, the fertilizer use emission was dominant; it had the highest contribution rate in summer during the agricultural period and a more prominent impact in areas with less human interference. Reasonable regulation of the application of high-ammonia releasing fertilizer, especially during the agricultural period in summer, is an effective way to reduce the threat of atmospheric ammonia to water health.

Long-term spatiotemporal variations of ammonia in the Yangtze River Delta region of China and its driving factors

Abstract:This study focuses on the spatiotemporal distribution, urban-rural variations, and driving factors of ammonia Vertical Column Densities (VCDs) in China's Yangtze River Delta region (YRD) from 2008 to 2020. Utilizing data from the Infrared Atmospheric Sounding Interferometer (IASI), Generalized Additive Models (GAM), and the GEOS-Chem chemical transport model, we observed a significant increase of NH3 VCDs in the YRD between 2014 and 2020. The spatial distribution analysis revealed higher NH3 concentrations in the northern part of the YRD region, primarily due to lower precipitation, alkaline soil, and intensive agricultural activities. NH3 VCDs in the YRD region increased significantly (65.18%) from 2008 to 2020. The highest growth rate occurs in the summer, with an annual average growth rate of 7.2% during the period from 2014 to 2020. Agricultural emissions dominated NH3 VCDs during spring and summer, with high concentrations primarily located in the agricultural areas adjacent to densely populated urban zones. Regions within several large urban areas have been discovered to exhibit relatively stable variations in NH3 VCDs. The rise in NH3 VCDs within the YRD region was primarily driven by the reduction of acidic gases like SO2, as emphasized by GAM modeling and sensitivity tests using the GEOS-Chem model. The concentration changes of acidic gases contribute to over 80% of the interannual variations in NH3 VCDs. This emphasizes the crucial role of environmental policies targeting the reduction of these acidic gases. Effective emission control is urgent to mitigate environmental hazards and secondary particulate matter, especially in the northern YRD.

Abstract:A comprehensive understanding of nitrogen pollution status, especially the identification of sources and fate of nitrate is essential for effective water quality management at the local scale. However, the nitrogen contamination of surface water across China was poorly understood at the national scale. A dataset related to nitrogen was established based on 111 pieces of literature from 2000 to 2020 in this study. The spatiotemporal variability, source tracing, health risk assessment, and drivers of China's surface water nitrogen pollution were analyzed by integrating multiple methods. These results revealed a significant spatiotemporal heterogeneity in the nitrogen concentration of surface water across China. Spatially, the Haihe River Basin and Yellow River Basin were the basins where surface water was seriously contaminated by nitrogen in China, while the surface water of Southwest Basin was less affected. Temporally, significant differences were observed in the nitrogen content of surface water in the Songhua and Liaohe River Basin, Pearl River Basin, Southeast Basin, and Yellow River Basin. There were 1%, 1%, 12%, and 46% probability exceeding the unacceptable risk level (HI＞1) for children in the Songhua and Liaohe River Basin, Pearl River Basin, Haihe River Basin, and Yellow River Basin, respectively. The primary sources of surface water nitrate in China were found to be domestic sewage and manure (37.7%), soil nitrogen (31.7%), and chemical fertilizer (26.9%), with a limited contribution from atmospheric precipitation (3.7%). Human activities determined the current spatiotemporal distribution of nitrogen contamination in China as well as the future development trend. This research could provide scientifically reasonable recommendations for the containment of surface water nitrogen contamination in China and even globally.
Constraints on vertical variability of geogenic ammonium in multi-layered aquifer systems

Abstract:The elevated levels of geogenic (natural) ammonium in groundwater have been frequently documented in recent years. Although improving insights have been achieved in understanding the genesis of ammonium in the subsurface environment, the vertical variability of the geogenic ammonium in groundwater remains poorly understood. Here, we selected typical multi-layered aquifer systems in the central Yangtze River plain and characterized the vertical heterogeneity of geogenic ammonium through the hydrogeochemical analysis. Subsequently, the controlling factors were identified by examining the molecular composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and aquifer sediment features. The results indicated that the ammonium concentration in groundwater increased from the deep to shallow aquifers (2.13 to 9.88 mg/L as N), accompanied by a transition in organic matter (OM) degradation towards the methanogenic stage ( δ 13 C-DIC: −23.07 to −0.34‰). Compared to the deeper aquifers, the DOM in the shallow aquifer was characterized by a higher abundance of the N-containing OM (15.1% > 13.13% > 12.76%) with a lower molecular lability index, corresponding to more thorough degradation extent. The characteristics of the soluble OM in depth-matched sediments were similar to those of the DOM in groundwater, suggesting the persistent water-rock interactions. Besides, the pumping tests revealed that the hydraulic conductivity decreased from deep to shallow aquifers (2.28 to 0.62 m/d), which further facilitated the more retention of geogenic ammonium in the shallow aquifer. That is, the combined effects of the abundant N-containing OM in sediments, strong degradation of the bioactive DOM, and long retention governed by hydrodynamics contributed to the increased ammonium enrichment in the shallow aquifer, thereby generating the vertical variability. The findings underscore the significance of the complex coupled factors in controlling the vertical distribution of geogenic ammonium in multi-layered aquifer systems, which was crucial for understanding the spatial heterogeneity of geogenic contaminated groundwater.

Abstract:Ammonium nitrogen (NH x ) in atmospheric wet deposition is a primary external nitrogen source for reservoir-type water sources, and identifying its sources is crucial for controlling nitrogen pollution in water. This study aimed to examine the NH x characteristics and sources in wet deposition in the Xichuan reservoir area of the Danjiangkou Reservoir, the South-to-North Water Diversion Project (SNWDP) water source, from September 2019 to August 2020. Major inorganic nitrogen concentrations in precipitation and ammonia-nitrogen isotope (δ 15 N–NH 4 + ) values were measured, and the sources were analyzed using the Bayesian mixing model. The results showed that NH 4 + was the main inorganic nitrogen form in wet deposition, with a concentration ranged of 0.16–5.26 mg L −1 . The δ 15 N–NH 4 + values ranged from −14.7‰ to +6.3‰, with significant isotopic effects from agricultural sources and climatic conditions, showing higher values in summer and lower values in winter. The release of ammonia (NH 3 ) from agricultural sources was the primary NH x source (58.0%–76.6%), with fertilizer application being the most significant contributor (32.1%–46.6%). Seasonally, the relative contribution of agricultural sources to NH 4 + in wet deposition was higher in autumn and winter. Spatially, agricultural activities significantly impacted atmospheric nitrogen accumulation across the reservoir area. This study quantified NH x sources in wet deposition, providing isotopic evidence and scientific references for nitrogen control measures and atmospheric nitrogen cycling studies.

Abstract:As one of the largest agricultural areas, the Sanjiang Plain of Northeast China has faced serious inorganic nitrogen pollution of groundwater, but the sources and the formation mechanism of pollution in the regional shallow groundwater remain unclear, which constrains the progress of pollution control and agricultural development planning. An investigation on potential nitrogen sources, groundwater inorganic nitrogen compounds (NH4+, NO3−, NO2−), and topsoil total nitrogen concentration (TN) was conducted in a typical paddy irrigation area of Sanjiang Plain. Multivariate statistical analysis combined with geospatial-based assessment was applied to identify the sources, determine the governing influencing factors, and analyze the formation process of inorganic nitrogen compounds in shallow groundwater. The results show that the land use type, oxidation-reduction potential (Eh), groundwater depth, NO2− concentration, and electrical conductivity (EC) are highly correlated with the NO3− pollution in groundwater, while DO and Eh affected the distribution of NH4+ most; the high concentrations of NO3− in sampling wells are most likely to be found in the residential land and are distributed mainly in densely populated areas, whereas the NH4+ compounds are most likely to accumulate in the paddy field or the lands surrounded by paddy field and reach the highest level in the northwest of the area, where the fields were cultivated intensively with higher fertilization rates and highest values of topsoil TN. From the results, it can be concluded that that the NO3− compounds in groundwater originated from manure and domestic waste and accumulated in the oxidizing environment, while the NH4+ compounds were derived from N fertilization and remained steady in the reducing environment. NO2− compounds in groundwater were the immediate products of nitrification as a result of microorganism activities.

Abstract:Elevated and increasing NO3− concentration in groundwater affect groundwater supplies in China and elsewhere. However, how groundwater flow affects NO3− concentration in groundwater has yet to be fully understood. Herein, multi‐isotopes (15N, 11B, 18O, and 2H) and local indicators of spatial association (LISA) were used to elucidate the spatiotemporal variation, sources, and patterns of NO3− and its response to groundwater flow in Poyang Lake Basin where agriculture, industry and urban coexist. The location of NO3− hotspots identified by LISA tended to move from the middle to lower reaches of Ganfu Plain with groundwater flow, and hotspots area expanded in the upper reaches of Xin River Basin and northwest of the study area during the transition from dry season to wet season. Our results revealed that variations of regional NO3− concentration were controlled by groundwater recharge or flow mode (vertical or lateral), biogeochemical processes and sources (sewage and manure). In some areas with the single stratigraphic structure (unconfined aquifer), spatiotemporal variation of NO3− concentration was influenced by local pollution sources and vertical recharge of current precipitation (vertical flow). In some areas with binary structures (confined aquifer), groundwater was mainly recharged by lateral flow and NO3− concentration was mainly affected by mixing effect of upstream groundwater, reflecting human activities in the upper reaches rather than local human activities. In lakeside floodplain, groundwater NO3− was attenuated by the dissimilatory NO3− reduction to NH4+ . This study provides a novel insight into groundwater flow controlling on spatiotemporal distribution of NO3− concentration in the regional scale.

Abstract:Groundwater and rivers in Chinese cities suffer from severe nitrate pollution. The accurate identification of nitrate sources throughout aquatic systems is key to the water nitrate pollution management. This study investigated nitrogen components of groundwater for twelve years and analyzed the sources of nitrate in the aquatic system based on dual isotopes (δ15N-NO3- and δ18O-NO3-) in the city of Nanjing, a core city of the Yangtze River Delta region, China. Our results showed that the ratio of nitrate to the sum of ammonia and nitrate in groundwater show an increasing trend during 2010-2021. The nitrate concentration was positively correlated with the proportion of cultivated land and negatively correlated with the proportion of forest land in the buffer zone. The relationship between Cl- and NO3-/ Cl- showed that agriculture and sewage sources increased during 2010-2015, sewage sources increased during 2016-2018, agriculture sources increased during 2019-2021. Manure and sewage were the primary sources of groundwater nitrate (72 %). There was no significant difference between the developed land (78 %), cultivated land (69 %), and aquaculture area (72 %). This indicates that dense population and intensive aquaculture in the suburbs have a significant impact on nitrate pollution. The contributions of manure and sewage to the fluvial nitrate sources in the lower reaches of the Qinhuai River Basin were 61 %. The non-point sources, including groundwater N (39 %) and soil N (35 %), were 74 % over the upper reaches. This study highlights the necessity of developing different N pollution management strategies for different parts of highly urbanized watersheds and considers groundwater restoration and soil nitrogen management as momentous, long-term tasks.
