Abstract:Historically, the field of plasmonics has been relying on the framework of classical electrodynamics, with the local-response approximation of material response being applied even when dealing with nanoscale metallic structures. However, when approaching the atomic-scale confinement of the electromagnetic radiation, mesoscopic effects are anticipated to become observable, e.g., those associated with the nonlocal electrodynamic surface response of the electron gas. We investigate nonlocal effects in propagating gap surface plasmon modes in ultrathin metal--dielectric--metal planar waveguides, exploiting monocrystalline gold flakes separated by atomic-layer-deposited aluminum oxide. We use scanning near-field optical microscopy to directly access the near-field of such confined gap plasmon modes and measure their dispersion relation (via their complex-valued propagation constants). We compare our experimental findings with the predictions of the generalized nonlocal optical response theory to unveil signatures of nonlocal damping, which becomes appreciable for smaller dielectric gaps.

Abstract:In contrast to artificial metamaterials, natural two-dimensional (2D) hyperbolic materials are able to support higher electromagnetic confinement and stronger photonic density of states. This means natural 2D hyperbolic materials have fascinating potential for applications in thermal photonics. In this work, we investigate mechanisms of near-field thermal radiation (NFTR) in a Td–WTe2 single layer at the nanoscale using the fluctuation-dissipation theorem and density-functional theory. The results show that NFTR of Td–WTe2 can be 3 orders of magnitude larger than the blackbody limit. By using the photonic tunneling coefficient and the plasmon dispersion, we present a comprehensive study of plasmonic properties of Td–WTe2. Moreover, our first-principles calculations predict that application of a certain amount of mechanical stress can trigger topological transition between the elliptic and the hyperbolic surface states by regulating the Fermi surface and interband excitation threshold. Lastly, we systematically exhibit the evolution of surface plasmon polaritons in Td–WTe2 under mechanical stress and analyze the performance of using mechanical stress to modulate the corresponding NFTR. Our work explores the great potential of tunable radiative heat flux in Td–WTe2, which is explained here through the peculiar nature of hyperbolic surface plasmons.

Enhancement and tunability of near-field radiative heat transfer mediated by surface plasmon polaritons in thin plasmonic films

Abstract:The properties of thermal radiation exchange between hot and cold objects can be strongly modified if they interact in the near field where electromagnetic coupling occurs across gaps narrower than the dominant wavelength of thermal radiation. Using a rigorous fluctuational electrodynamics approach, we predict that ultra-thin films of plasmonic materials can be used to dramatically enhance near-field heat transfer. The total spectrally integrated film-to-film heat transfer is over an order of magnitude larger than between the same materials in bulk form and also exceeds the levels achievable with polar dielectrics such as SiC. We attribute this enhancement to the significant spectral broadening of radiative heat transfer due to coupling between surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) on both sides of each thin film. We show that the radiative heat flux spectrum can be further shaped by the choice of the substrate onto which the thin film is deposited. In particular, substrates supporting surface phonon polaritons (SPhP) strongly modify the heat flux spectrum owing to the interactions between SPPs on thin films and SPhPs of the substrate. The use of thin film phase change materials on polar dielectric substrates allows for dynamic switching of the heat flux spectrum between SPP-mediated and SPhP-mediated peaks.

Drifting Electrons: Nonreciprocal Plasmonics and Thermal Photonics

Abstract:Light propagates symmetrically in opposite directions in most materials and structures. This fact -- a consequence of the Lorentz reciprocity principle -- has tremendous implications for science and technology across the electromagnetic spectrum. Here, we investigate an emerging approach to break reciprocity that does not rely on magneto-optical effects or spacetime modulations, but is instead based on biasing a plasmonic material with a direct electric current. Using a 3D Green function formalism and microscopic considerations, we elucidate the propagation properties of surface plasmon-polaritons (SPPs) supported by a generic nonreciprocal platform of this type, revealing some previously overlooked, anomalous, wave-propagation effects. We show that SPPs can propagate in the form of steerable, slow-light, unidirectional beams associated with inflexion points in the modal dispersion. We also clarify the impact of dissipation (due to collisions and Landau damping) on nonreciprocal effects and shed light on the connections between inflexion points, exceptional points at band-edges, and complex modal transitions in leaky-wave structures. We then apply these concepts to the important area of thermal photonics, and provide the first theoretical demonstration of drift-induced nonreciprocal near-field radiative heat transfer between two planar bodies. Our findings may open new opportunities toward the development of nonreciprocal magnet-free devices that combine the benefits of plasmonics and nonreciprocal photonics for wave-guiding and energy applications.

How nonlocal damping reduces plasmon-enhanced fluorescence in ultranarrow gaps

Abstract:The nonclassical modification of plasmon-assisted fluorescence enhancement is theoretically explored by placing two-level dipole emitters at the narrow gaps encountered in canonical plasmonic architectures, namely dimers and trimers of different metallic nanoparticles. Through detailed simulations, in comparison with appropriate analytical modelling, it is shown that within classical electrodynamics, and for the reduced separations explored here, fluorescence enhancement factors of the order of $10^{5}$ can be achieved, with a divergent behaviour as the particle touching regime is approached. This remarkable prediction is mainly governed by the dramatic increase in excitation rate triggered by the corresponding field enhancement inside the gaps. Nevertheless, once nonclassical corrections are included, the amplification factors decrease by up to two orders of magnitude and a saturation regime for narrower gaps is reached. These nonclassical limitations are demonstrated by simulations based on the generalised nonlocal optical response theory, which accounts in an efficient way not only for nonlocal screening, but also for the enhanced Landau damping near the metal surface. A simple strategy to introduce nonlocal corrections to the analytic solutions is also proposed. It is therefore shown that the nonlocal optical response of the metal imposes more realistic, finite upper bounds to the enhancement feasible with ultrasmall plasmonic cavities, thus providing a theoretical description closer to state of the art experiments.

Topological Materials for Near-Field Radiative Heat Transfer

Abstract:Topological materials provide a platform that utilizes the geometric characteristics of structured materials to control the flow of waves, enabling unidirectional and protected transmission that is immune to defects or impurities. The topologically designed photonic materials can carry quantum states and electromagnetic energy, benefiting nanolasers or quantum photonic systems. This article reviews recent advances in the topological applications of photonic materials for radiative heat transfer, especially in the near field. When the separation distance between media is considerably smaller than the thermal wavelength, the heat transfer exhibits super-Planckian behavior that surpasses Planck's blackbody predictions. Near-field thermal radiation in subwavelength systems supporting surface modes has various applications, including nanoscale thermal management and energy conversion. Photonic materials and structures that support topological surface states show immense potential for enhancing or suppressing near-field thermal radiation. We present various topological effects, such as periodic and quasi-periodic nanoparticle arrays, Dirac and Weyl semimetal-based materials, structures with broken global symmetries, and other topological insulators, on near-field heat transfer. Also, the possibility of realizing near-field thermal radiation in such topological materials for alternative thermal management and heat flux guiding in nano-scale systems is discussed based on the existing technology.

Plasmonic Enhanced Photothermal Effects and Its Applications.

Abstract:We review here our recent studies on plasmonic enhanced photothermal effects in metallic nanostructure, and the applications of such effects. When light is shined on a prefect metamaterial absorber patterned with e-beam lithography, the gold nanoparticles (NPs) forming the absorber can be either transformed to nano-spherical-domes, or to truncated-octahedral shaped or multi-twined nanocrystals with large crystal grain sizes and flat boundary facets. The evolution of morphology and crystallinity of the gold NPs can be also observed. Evidences clearly show that the surface melting and the coalescence mechanism play a key role on nanocrystals formation. These melted gold nanospheres can even be transferred to another substrate, on which the transferred NPs exhibit excellent size uniformity. The strong photothermal effects can also be utilized to tune silicon photonics waveguides and resonators. It is shown that all-optical photothermal switching of Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZI), silicon disk resonators, and silicon ring resonators is possible with the help of plasmonic nanoheaters. The switching response time and power consumption are all at reasonably low level.
Quantum hydrodynamic theory for plasmonics: Impact of the electron density tail

Abstract:Multiscale plasmonic systems (e.g., extended metallic nanostructures with subnanometer inter-distances) play a key role in the development of next-generation nanophotonic devices. An accurate modeling of the optical interactions in these systems requires an accurate description of both quantum effects and far-field properties. Classical electromagnetism can only describe the latter, while time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) can provide a full first-principles quantum treatment. However, TD-DFT becomes computationally prohibitive for sizes that exceed few nanometers, which are instead very important for most applications. In this article, we introduce a method based on the quantum hydrodynamic theory (QHT) that includes nonlocal contributions of the kinetic energy and the correct asymptotic description of the electron density. We show that our QHT method can predict both plasmon energy and spill-out effects in metal nanoparticles in excellent agreement with TD-DFT predictions, thus allowing reliable and efficient calculations of both quantum and far-field properties in multiscale plasmonic systems.

Near-Field Radiative Heat Transfer between Drift-biased Graphene through Nonreciprocal Surface Plasmons

Abstract:In this Rapid Communication, we theoretically demonstrate that near-field radiative heat transfer (NFRHT) can be modulated and enhanced by a new energy transmission mode of evanescent wave, i.e. the nonreciprocal surface plasmons polaritons (NSPPs). In addition to the well-known coupled surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), applying a drift current on a graphene sheet leads to an extremely asymmetric photonic transmission model, which has never been noted in the noncontact heat exchanges at nanoscale before. The coupling of plasmons in the infrared bands dominates the NFRHT, associated with low loss (high loss and ultrahigh confinement) traveling along (against) the current. The dependence of NSPPs on the drift-current velocity as well as the vacuum gap is analyzed. It is found that the coupling of NSPPs at smaller and larger gap sizes exhibits different nonreciprocities. Finally, we also demonstrate that the prominent influence of the drift current on the radiative heat flux is found at a low chemical potential. These findings will open a new way to spectrally control NFRHT, which holds great potential for improving the performance of energy systems like near-field thermophotovoltaics and thermal modulator.

Abstract:We study the dependence of the heat transfer between two semi-infinite solids on the dielectric properties of the bodies. We show that the heat transfer at short separation between the solids may increase by many order of magnitude when the surfaces are covered by adsorbates, or can support low-frequency surface plasmons. In this case the heat transfer is determined by resonant photon tunneling between adsorbate vibrational modes, or surface plasmon modes. We study the dependence of the heat flux between two metal surfaces on the electron concentration using the non-local optic dielectric approach, and co mpare with the results obtained within local optic approximation.

Abstract:The study of nonlocal effects has become a hot topic in nano-optics. There are many models to describe nonlocal effects. One of the more widely used is the Maxwell hydrodynamics Drude model, which provides a quantum pressure correction term that can be combined with quantum first-principles calculations. However, it is usually solved by the FDTD method via the auxiliary difference equation technique where the quantum pressure correction term is converted into current density or polarization intensity. This method is severely limited, especially when the quantum pressure correction term includes electron–electron exchange energy, correlation energy, and others beyond Thomas–Fermi (TF) energy. Instead, here we propose to directly couple Maxwell's equations with a hydrodynamic model without the need for term conversion. It is confirmed as a general FDTD numerical method and can be taken as a more convenient tool for the study of nonlocal response.

Abstract:Abstract Coupling between electromagnetic cavity fields and fluorescent molecules or quantum emitters can be strongly enhanced by reducing the cavity mode volume. Plasmonic structures allow light confinement down to volumes that are only a few cubic nanometers. At such length scales, nonlocal and quantum tunneling effects are expected to influence the emitter interaction with the surface plasmon modes, which unavoidably requires going beyond classical models to accurately describe the electron response at the metal surface. In this context, the quantum hydrodynamic theory (QHT) has emerged as an efficient tool to probe nonlocal and quantum effects in metallic nanostructures. Here, we apply state-of-the-art QHT to investigate the quantum effects on strong coupling of a dipole emitter placed at nanometer distances from metallic particles. A comparison with conventional local response approximation (LRA) and Thomas-Fermi hydrodynamic theory results shows the importance of quantum effects on the plasmon-emitter coupling. The QHT predicts qualitative deviation from LRA in the weak coupling regime that leads to quantitative differences in the strong coupling regime. In nano-gap systems, the inclusion of quantum broadening leads to the existence of an optimal gap size for Rabi splitting that minimizes the requirements on the emitter oscillator strength.

Investigation on Plasmonic Responses in Multilayered Nanospheres Including Asymmetry and Spatial Nonlocal Effects

Abstract:In this work, we present a rigorous approach for analyzing the optical response of multilayered spherical nano-particles comprised of either plasmonic metal or dielectric, when there is no longer radial symmetry and when nonlocality is included. The Lorenz-Mie theory is applied, and a linearized hydrodynamic Drude model as well as the general nonlocal optical response model for the metals are employed. Additional boundary conditions, viz., the continuity of normal components of polarization current density and the continuity of first-order pressure of free electron density, respectively, are incorporated when handling interfaces involving metals. The application of spherical addition theorems, enables us to express a spherical harmonic about one origin to spherical harmonics about a different origin, and leads to a linear system of equations for the inward-and outward-field modal coefficients for all the layers in the nanoparticle. Scattering matrices at interfaces are obtained and cascaded to obtain the expansion coefficients, to yield the final solution. Through extensive modelling of stratified concentric and eccentric metal-involved spherical nanoshells illuminating by a plane wave, we show that, within a nonlocal description, significant modifications of plasmonic response appear, e.g. a blue-shift in the extinction / scattering spectrum and a broadening spectrum of the resonance. In addition, it has been demonstrated that core-shell nanostructures provide an option for tunable Fano-resonance generators. The proposed method shows its capability and flexibility to analyze the nonlocal response of eccentric hybrid metal-dielectric multilayer structures as well as adjoined metal-involved nanoparticles, even when the number of layers is large.

Abstract:Collective optoelectronic phenomena such as plasmons and phonon polaritons can drive processes in many branches of nanoscale science. Classical physics predicts that a perfect thermal emitter operates at the black body limit. Numerous experiments have shown that surface phonon polaritons allow emission two orders of magnitude above the limit at a gap distance of approximate to 50 nm. This work shows that a supported multilayer graphene structure improves the state of the art by around one order of magnitude with a approximate to 1129-fold-enhancement at a gap distance of approximate to 55 nm. Coupled surface plasmon polaritons at mid- and far-infrared frequencies allow for near-unity photon tunneling across a broad swath of k-space enabling the improved result. Electric tuning of the Fermi-level allows for the detailed characterization and optimization of the colossal nanoscale heat transfer.
Quantum Hydrodynamics Meets Plasmonics and Nonlinear Optics in Two-Dimensional Materials

Abstract:This paper explores the application of quantum-hydrodynamic models to study two-dimensional electron gases, with a focus on nonlocal plasmonics and nonlinear optics. We begin by reviewing the derivation of the Madelung equations from the Wigner distribution function. Using the Madelung equations in conjunction with Poisson's equation, we calculate the spectrum of magnetoplasmons and the magneto-optical conductivity in the electrostatic regime, incorporating nonlocal corrections due to the Fermi pressure. In the absence of a magnetic field, we analyze nonlinear and nonlocal second-harmonic generation, demonstrating how plasmon excitation enhances this process. We further discuss the emergence of self-modulation phenomena driven by nonlinearity, leading to the renormalization of the plasmon dispersion. Notably, we show that nonlinearity amplifies nonlocal effects and, leveraging the hydrodynamic formalism, derive a simple analytic expression for the renormalized spectra. Additionally, we examine the role of the quantum potential, interpreted as a gradient correction to the Thomas--Fermi kinetic energy. Our results provide new insights into quantum effects in plasmonic systems, with significant implications for future advances in nanophotonics through the lens of hydrodynamic theory.

Giant near-field radiative heat transfer between ultrathin metallic films

Abstract:Understanding energy transfer via near-field thermal radiation is essential for applications such as near-field imaging, thermophotovoltaics and thermal circuit devices. Evanescent waves and photon tunneling are responsible for the near-field energy transfer. In bulk noble metals, however, surface plasmons do not contribute efficiently to the near-field energy transfer because of the mismatch of wavelength. In this paper, a giant near-field radiative heat transfer rate that is orders-of-magnitude greater than the blackbody limit between two ultrathin metallic films is demonstrated at nanoscale separations. Moreover, different physical origins for near-field thermal radiation transfer for thick and thin metallic films are clarified, and the radiative heat transfer enhancement in ultrathin metallic films is proved to come from the excitation of surface plasmons. Meanwhile, because of the inevitable high sheet resistance of ultrathin metal films, the heat transfer coefficient is 4600 times greater than the Planckian limit for the separation of 10 nm in ultrathin metallic films, which is the same order or even greater than that in other 2D materials with low carrier density. Our work shows that ultrathin metallic films are excellent materials for radiative heat transfer, which may find promising applications in thermal nano-devices and thermal engineering.
Super-Planckian Radiative Heat Transfer between Metallic Surfaces Due to Near-Field and Thin-Film Effects

Abstract:In this Letter we experimentally demonstrate that the radiative heat transfer between metallic planar surfaces exceeds the blackbody limit by employing the near-field and thin-film effects. Nanosized polystyrene particles were used to create a nanometer gap between aluminum thin-films of different thicknesses coated on 5x5 mm2 diced silicon chips while the gap spacing is fitted from the near-field measurement with bare Si chips. The experimental results are validated by theoretical calculation based on fluctuational electrodynamics. The near-field radiative heat flux between 13-nm Al thin-film samples at 215 nm gap distance is measured to be 6.4 times over the blackbody limit and 420 times compared to the far-field radiative heat transfer between metallic surfaces with a temperature difference of 65 K. In addition, the theoretical prediction suggests a near-field enhancement of 122 times relative to the blackbody limit and 8000 times over far-field one at 50-nm vacuum gap between 20-nm Al thin-film samples, under the same temperature difference of 65 K. This work will facilitate the understanding and application of near-field radiation to thermal power conversion, noncontact cooling, heat flow management, and optical storage where metallic materials are involved.

Probing the Limits to Near-Field Heat Transfer Enhancements in Phonon-Polaritonic Materials

Abstract:Near-field radiative heat transfer (NFRHT) arises between objects separated by nanoscale gaps and leads to dramatic enhancements in heat transfer rates compared to the far-field. Recent experiments have provided first insights into these enhancements, especially using silicon dioxide (SiO2) surfaces, which support surface phonon polaritons (SPhP). Yet, theoretical analysis suggests that SPhPs in SiO2 occur at frequencies far higher than optimal. Here, we first show theoretically that SPhP-mediated NFRHT, at room temperature, can be 5-fold larger than that of SiO2, for materials that support SPhPs closer to an optimal frequency of 67 meV. Next, we experimentally demonstrate that MgF2 and Al2O3 closely approach this limit. Specifically, we demonstrate that near-field thermal conductance between MgF2 plates separated by 50 nm approaches within nearly 50% of the global SPhP bound. These findings lay the foundation for exploring the limits to radiative heat transfer rates at the nanoscale.

Abstract:Precise measurement and control of local heating in plasmonic nanostructures are vital for diverse nanophotonic devices. Despite significant efforts, challenges in understanding temperature-induced plasmonic nonlinearity persist, particularly in light absorption and near-field enhancement due to the absence of suitable measurement techniques. This study presents an approach allowing simultaneous measurements of light absorption and near-field enhancement through angle-resolved near-field scanning optical microscopy with iterative opto-thermal analysis. We revealed gold thin films exhibit sublinear nonlinearity in near-field enhancement due to nonlinear opto-thermal effects, while light absorption shows both sublinear and superlinear behaviors at varying thicknesses. These observations align with predictions from a simple harmonic oscillation model, in which changes in damping parameters affect light absorption and field enhancement differently. The sensitivity of our method was experimentally examined by measuring the opto-thermal responses of three-dimensional nanostructure arrays. Our findings have direct implications for advancing plasmonic applications, including photocatalysis, photovoltaics, photothermal effects, and surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy.

Local field topology behind light localization and metamaterial topological transitions

Abstract:We revisit the mechanisms governing the sub-wavelength spatial localization of light in surface plasmon polariton (SPP) modes by investigating both local and global features in optical powerflow at SPP frequencies. Close inspection of the instantaneous Poynting vector reveals formation of optical vortices - localized areas of cyclic powerflow - at the metal-dielectric interface. As a result, optical energy circulates through a subwavelength-thick 'conveyor belt' between the metal and dielectric where it creates a high density of optical states (DOS), tight optical energy localization, and low group velocity associated with SPP waves. The formation of bonding and anti-bonding SPP modes in metal-dielectric-metal waveguides can also be conveniently explained in terms of different spatial arrangements of localized powerflow vortices between two metal interfaces. Finally, we investigate the underlying mechanisms of global topological transitions in metamaterials composed of multiple metal and dielectric films, i.e., transitions of their iso-frequency surfaces from ellipsoids to hyperboloids, which are not accompanied by the breaking of lattice symmetry. Our analysis reveals that such global topological transitions are governed by the dynamic local re-arrangement of local topological features of the optical interference field, such as vortices and saddle points, which reconfigures global optical powerflow within the metamaterial. These new insights into plasmonic light localization and DOS manipulation not only help to explain the well-known properties of SPP waves but also provide useful guidelines for the design of plasmonic components and materials for a variety of practical applications.
