Abstract:In this study, the antifatigue potential of two sea cucumber peptides (SCP), with low hydrolysis degree (SCP-1) and high hydrolysis degree (SCP-2) derived from Acaudina leucoprocta was investigated. SCP-2 had a lower molecular weight, shorter peptide length, and higher proportion of identified sequences related to branched chain amino acids than SCP-1. Both SCP-1 and SCP-2 significantly improved exercise performance and exerted antifatigue effects in comparison to the negative control group (NC). The mice group received SCP-2 treatment showed better antifatigue effects than that of SCP-1 by prolonging exhaustive swimming time, increasing forelimb grip strength, reducing metabolite accumulation, relieving muscle injury, enhancing muscle glycogen and energy metabolism. Besides, these two treatments significantly modulated the protein relative levels of oxidative stress and mitochondrial function by regulating the NRF2 and AMPK signaling pathways. Conclusively, the study's findings suggested that SCP could possibly be used as a green functional ingredient to overcome fatigue.

Abstract:Laminins are a group of extracellular-matrix proteins important in development and disease. They are heterotrimers, and specific domains in the different chains have specialized functions. The G domain of the α5 chain has now been produced in transfected mammalian cells as single modules and two tandem arrays, α5LG1–3 and α5LG4–5 (LG is laminin G domain-like). Using these fragments we produced specific polyclonal antibodies functional in immunoblotting and immunofluorescence studies and in solid-phase assays. Both α5LG tandem arrays had physiologically relevant affinities for sulphated ligands such as heparin and sulphatides. Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevance: Ginsenoside Rg3 has shown multiple pharmacological activities and been considered as one of the most promising approaches for fatigue treatment. However, little is known about the cellular and molecular mechanisms of Rg3 on anti-fatigue and the effect of Rg3 on dopaminergic system has not been reported yet. The major aim of this study is to investigate the effect of Rg3 on TH expression and the related biochemical parameters, such as PKA alpha, ERK1/2, Akt and alpha-synuclein in brain of fatigue rats.Materials and methods: Weight-loaded forced swimming was performed to establish an animal model of fatigue. Rg3 (10 mg/kg, 50 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg) was intragastrically administrated before swimming. The effect of Rg3 on the expression and phosphorylation of TH and TH-related proteins in fatigue rats or in SH-SY5Y cells was assessed with western blotting. HPLC was used to examine the level of DA and DOPAC in the fatigue rats tissues.Results: TH and phosphorylated TH were decreased in different brain regions of which ventral midbrain were less affected in weight-loaded forced swimming rats. Pretreatment with Rg3 significantly suppressed fatigue-induced decrease expression of TH and TH phosphorylation. Also treatment with Rg3 reversed the decrease expression of PKAa as well as the phosphorylation of ERK1/2 and Akt which were induced by weight-loaded forced swimming. Moreover, weight-loaded swimming could induce the increase expression of alpha-synuclein in hippocampus and midbrain, while suppressed alpha-synuclein expression in striatum and prefrontal cortex. Furthermore, Rg3 could induce the increase of TH expression and phosphorylation which was accompanied with elevated expression and phosphorylation of related kinase proteins in vitro, while the inhibitors of kinase proteins could suppress these effects of Rg3. In addition, HPLC results showed that Rg3 could reverse the weight-loaded swimming-induced increase of DOPAC/DA ratio.Conclusion: Our data suggest that fatigue can induce the decrease of DA which might partially result from the change of TH expression and phosphorylation, and Rg3 can reverse these fatigue-induced changes. The underling mechanisms may include the activity changes of PKA alpha, ERK1/2, Akt and alpha-synuclein. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. All rights reserved.
Anti-hypotensive treatment and endothelin blockade synergistically antagonize exercise fatigue in rats under simulated high altitude

Abstract:Rapid ascent to high altitude causes illness and fatigue, and there is a demand for effective acute treatments to alleviate such effects. We hypothesized that increased oxygen delivery to the tissue using a combination of a hypertensive agent and an endothelin receptor A antagonist drugs would limit exercise-induced fatigue at simulated high altitude. Our data showed that the combination of 0.1 mg/kg ambrisentan with either 20 mg/kg ephedrine or 10 mg/kg methylphenidate significantly improved exercise duration in rats at simulated altitude of 4,267 m, whereas the individual compounds did not. In normoxic, anesthetized rats, ephedrine alone and in combination with ambrisentan increased heart rate, peripheral blood flow, carotid and pulmonary arterial pressures, breathing rate, and vastus lateralis muscle oxygenation, but under inspired hypoxia, only the combination treatment significantly enhanced muscle oxygenation. Our results suggest that sympathomimetic agents combined with endothelin-A receptor blockers offset altitude-induced fatigue in rats by synergistically increasing the delivery rate of oxygen to hypoxic muscle by concomitantly augmenting perfusion pressure and improving capillary conductance in the skeletal muscle. Our findings might therefore serve as a basis to develop an effective treatment to prevent high-altitude illness and fatigue in humans.
Ginsenosides ameliorates high altitude-induced hypoxia injury in lung and kidney tissues by regulating PHD2/HIF-1α/EPO signaling pathway

Abstract:Background: The primary constituent of ginseng, known as ginsenosides (GS), has been scientifically demonstrated to possess anti-fatigue, anti-hypoxia, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. However, the effect and mechanisms of GS on tissue injury induced by high-altitude hypoxia still remain unclear. Aim of the study: This study aims to investigate the protective effect of GS on a high-altitude hypoxia model and explore its mechanism. Materials and methods: Sprague-Dawley rats were placed in a high-altitude simulation chamber for 48 h (equivalent to an altitude of 6,000 m) to establish a high-altitude hypoxia model. We assessed the anti-hypoxic efficacy of GS through blood gas analysis, complete blood count, and hemorheology analysis. We used H&E and hypoxia probe assays to evaluate the protective effect of GS on organ ischemia-induced injury. Further, we used ELISA and qPCR analysis to detect the levels of inflammatory factors and oxidative stress markers. Immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence staining were performed to determinate protein expression of hypoxia inducible factor 1-alpha (HIF-1α), erythropoietin (EPO), and prolyl hydroxylase 2 (PHD2). Results: In the survival experiment of anoxic mice, 100 mg/kg of GS had the best anti-anoxic effect. GS slowed down the weight loss rate of rats in hypoxic environment. In the fluorescence detection of hypoxia, GS reduced the fluorescence signal value of lung and kidney tissue and alleviated the hypoxia state of tissue. Meanwhile GS improved blood biochemical and hematological parameters. We also observed that GS treatment significantly decreased oxidative stress damage in lung and kidney tissues. Further, the levels of inflammatory factors, IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α were reduced by GS. Finally, GS regulated the PHD2/HIF-1α/EPO signaling pathway to improve blood viscosity and tissue hyperemia damage. Conclusion: GS could alleviate high-altitude induced lung and kidney damage by reducing the level of inflammation and oxidative stress, improving blood circulation through the PHD2/HIF-1α/EPO pathway.
Modulation of Perturbed Cardiac Metabolism in Rats Under High-Altitude Hypoxia by Combination Treatment With L-carnitine and Trimetazidine

Abstract:High-altitude hypoxia has long been recognized as a vital etiology for high-altitude illnesses. High-altitude myocardial injury (HAMI) usually occurs in people who suffered from high-altitude exposure. To date, the molecular mechanism of HAMI remains elusive, which seriously hinders the prevention and treatment of HAMI. L -carnitine and trimetazidine are classic cardiovascular protective medicines. In this study, we used the metabolomic method, based on GC/MS, to explore the changes in metabolites in rats exposed to high-altitude hypoxia and then illustrate the metabolic pathways associated with the modulatory effect of L -carnitine combined with trimetazidine on rats with high-altitude exposure. The results showed that metabolites in the myocardium in rats under high-altitude hypoxia were markedly changed, such as branched-chain amino acids (BCAA, leucine, isoleucine, and valine), taurine, succinic acid, fumaric acid, lactic acid, pyruvic acid, 3-hydroxybutyrate, and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), while L -carnitine combined with trimetazidine modulated and improved the abnormal changes in energy substances caused by high-altitude hypoxia. L -carnitine mainly promoted the metabolism of fatty acids, while trimetazidine enhanced the glycolysis process. The combined administration of the two components not only increased the metabolism of fatty acids but also promoted aerobic glycolysis. Meanwhile, it contributed to the decrease in the elevation in some of the intermediates of the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle, decrease in the production of 3-hydroxybutyric acid, and relief of the abnormal energy metabolism process in organisms and the cardiac tissue. Our analysis delineates the landscape of the metabolites in the myocardial tissue of rats that were exposed to high altitude. Moreover, L -carnitine combined with trimetazidine can relieve the HAMI through modulated and improved abnormal changes in energy substances caused by high-altitude hypoxia.

Abstract:The research in the medical health care systems is shifting towards solutions that enable dynamic data exchange. To achieve this shift, interoperable solutions have been proposed by initiatives such as the integrating Healthcare Enterprise (IHE). IHE focuses on defining interoperable solution by specifying recommendations that foster standard based integration between healthcare systems. Using the results of an online questionnaire, in this work we study the current use of standards in the health care systems of Switzerland. The questionnaire identifies four dynamic data exchange scenarios that enhance the interoperability and the integration between different healthcare systems. The novelty of this work is that the identified scenarios are currently not addressed by the IHE recommendations and, they can improve the current interoperability solutions. The questionnaire confirms that those scenarios are useful and we suggest some technical solutions that may help to achieve them.

Abstract:Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a form of non-Hodgkin lymphoma that rarely affects skin. Cutaneous involvement is non-specific but usually indicates widespread disease. Herein we present two cases of MCL with secondary skin involvement. One case presented as an acneiform eruption on the face and had aberrant expression of bcl-2 and bcl-6 with weak CD5 expression. The second presented with multiple tumors on the abdomen and thighs. In both cases expression of Cyclin-D1 by the tumor cells was seen. Both patients died shortly after the diagnosis was established.

Abstract:Abstract The body is more prone to fatigue in a high-altitude hypoxic environment, in which fatigue occurs in both peripheral muscles and the central nervous system (CNS). The key factor determining the latter is the imbalance in brain energy metabolism. During strenuous exercise, lactate released from astrocytes is taken up by neurons via monocarboxylate transporters (MCTs) as a substrate for energy metabolism. The present study investigated the correlations among the adaptability to exercise-induced fatigue, brain lactate metabolism and neuronal hypoxia injury in a high-altitude hypoxic environment. Rats were subjected to exhaustive incremental load treadmill exercise under either normal pressure and normoxic conditions or simulated high-altitude, low-pressure and hypoxic conditions, with subsequent evaluation of the average exhaustive time as well as the expression of MCT2 and MCT4 in the cerebral motor cortex, the average neuronal density in the hippocampus, and the brain lactate content. The results illustrate that the average exhaustive time, neuronal density, MCT expression and brain lactate content were positively correlated with the altitude acclimatization time. These findings demonstrate that an MCT-dependent mechanism is involved in the adaptability of the body to central fatigue and provide a potential basis for medical intervention for exercise-induced fatigue in a high-altitude hypoxic environment.

Grape seed proanthocyanidin extract supplementation affects exhaustive exercise-induced fatigue in mice

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Grape seed proanthocyanidin extract (GSPE) has been extensively reported to possess a wide range of beneficial properties in multiple tissue damage. Previous studies have shown that exhaustive exercise-induced fatigue associates with oxidative stress injury, inflammatory response, and mitochondrial dysfunction.OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to investigate the anti-fatigue effects of GSPE in mice and explore its possible underlying mechanism.DESIGN: The mouse model of exhaustive exercise-induced fatigue was established by using the forced swimming test, and GSPE was orally treated for successive 28 days at 0, 1, 50 and 100 mg/kg/day of body weight, designated the control, GSPE-L, GSPE-M and GSPE-H groups, respectively.RESULTS: The presented results showed that treatment of GSPE at a dose of 50 and 100 mg/kg/day of body weight significantly relieved exhaustive exercise-induced fatigue, indicated by increasing the forced swimming time. In addition, treatment of GSPE significantly improved the creatine phosphokinase and lactic dehydrogenase, as well as lactic acid level in exhaustive swimming. For underlying mechanisms, treatment of GSPE had anti-fatigue effects by promoting antioxidant ability and resisting oxidative effect, as represented by increased total antioxidative capability levels, enhanced superoxide dismutase and catalase activities, and ameliorated malondialdehyde levels. Furthermore, treatment of GSPE significantly inhibited the activity of tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-1β, which suggested that its protective effects on exhaustive exercise-induced fatigue may be attributed to inhibition of inflammatory response. Last but not the least, treatment of GSPE significantly improved succinate dehydrogenase and Na+-K+-ATPase levels to enhance mitochondrial function during exhaustive swimming-induced fatigue.CONCLUSIONS: These results proved that treatment of GSPE possessed the beneficial properties of anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and mitochondrial protection to improve exhaustive exercise, which suggested that GSPE could be used as an effective functional food to delay fatigue.

Metabolomics study on the intervention effect of Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae extract in exercise-induced exhaustion rat using gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry

Abstract:The metabolomics approach based on the gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was adopted to explore the underlying mechanism of the anti-fatigue effect of Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae (RSM), a famous herbal medicine in China used for multiple biological functions, in load-weighted swimming test in rat, combined with biochemical parameters evaluations. As a result, the metabolomics study followed by orthogonal partial least-square (OPLS) analysis could differentiate metabolic profiling between the control and exhaustive exercise group, showing the rats underwent an obvious metabolic perturbation, whereas RSM treatment restored scores plot close to normal and showed regulatory effects on the muscle metabolic profiles. The changed metabolic pathways of the potential biomarkers in response to the effect of RSM treatment for exhaustive exercise rats included in glucose metabolism (glucose, lactic acid, alanine), glutathione metabolism (glycine, glutamate, 5-oxo-proline), TCA cycle (succinic acid), arginine biosynthesis (glutamine, ornithine, urea), glyoxylate and dicarboxylate metabolism (serine, glycine), oxidative stress (taurine) and purine metabolism (inosine). In addition, intervention of RSM increased hepatic glycogen, muscle glycogen and serum glucose, and decreased triglyceride and blood urea nitrogen levels, indicating RSM treatment may regulate energy metabolism by increasing the rate of fat utilization, decrease the protein and carbohydrate utilization. Furthermore, RSM reduced exhaustive exercise-induced accumulation of the lipid peroxidation byproduct malonaldehyde and elevated antioxidants' levels, including reduced glutathione and superoxide dismutase, which might be a positive reflection of improved oxidant-antioxidant balance. Moreover, RSM could protect against exercise-induced muscle damage by attenuating creatine kinase release. In summary, RSM provided a good anti-fatigue effect by regulating energy metabolism, oxidant-antioxidant balance, and the endogenous metabolites in the exercising muscle. This study demonstrates that metabolomics is an effective tool for the estimation of the potential anti-fatigue effect of RSM and for the illustration of its pharmacological mechanism.

Abstract:The betel nut is one of the most widely consumed addictive substances in the world after nicotine, ethanol, and caffeine. Arecoline is an active ingredient from the areca nut. It has many pharmacological effects and can affect the central nervous system. In this study, we found that arecoline can relieve fatigue behavior. Objective: This research aims to estimate the anti-fatigue effects of arecoline and explore its underlying mechanisms using a murine model of central fatigue precipitated by sleep deprivation (SD). Methods: Seventy-two male C57BL/6 mice were randomly assigned to six groups: a control group, an SD-induced fatigue model group, a group that received Rhodiola Rosea capsules (2.5 mg/kg), and three arecoline groups, which were administered at low, medium, and high doses (10, 20, and 40 mg/kg, respectively). Following 28 days of continuous administrations, the effects of arecoline on mouse fatigue-related behaviors were assessed by behavioral tests, including grip strength, rotarod performance, and weight-bearing swimming endurance. The release levels of the related biochemical markers were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs). Western blotting was employed to quantify the expression levels of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor (Nrf2), Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1), heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1), sequestosome-1 (p62), and NADPH quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1) in the gastrocnemius muscle. Results: Arecoline administration notably enhanced grip strength, delayed the onset of fatigue as evidenced by extended latencies in rotarod tests, and increased the duration of weight-bearing swimming in mice. In the elevated plus maze, arecoline obviously decreased both the number of entries and the total distance traveled in the open arms. Arecoline markedly decreased the contents of creatine kinase, blood urea nitrogen, lactate dehydrogenase, triglycerides, and cholesterol in the serum, while it elevated the levels of total testosterone, lactate dehydrogenase, and immunoglobulin G. Furthermore, it significantly increased the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase in the gastrocnemius muscle, reduced malondialdehyde levels, augmented hippocampal SOD and CAT activity, and elevated glycogen stores in both liver and muscle tissues. Neurotransmitter levels showed significant increases, cytokine levels were markedly reduced, and the expressions of Nrf2, Keap1, NQO1, p62, and HO-1 in brain tissues were significantly upregulated. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that arecoline has anti-fatigue activity, and the specific mechanisms are associated with elevating glucose and lipid metabolism levels, relieving oxidative stress damage, inhibiting neuroinflammatory response, and regulating neurotransmitter levels and the Keap1/Nrf2/HO-1 signaling pathway. The research provides a new direction for arecoline's potential in preventing and improving fatigue.

Integrated anti-fatigue effects of polysaccharides and small molecules coexisting in water extracts of ginseng: Gut microbiota-mediated mechanisms

Abstract:Ethnopharmacological relevance: Both clinical and animal studies have demonstrated that ginseng has curative effects on fatigue. Our previous study found that water extracts of ginseng (WEG) could significantly mitigate exercise-induced fatigue (EF). Notably, polysaccharides (GP) and small molecules (GS, mainly ginsenosides) coexist in WEG. Whether and how GP and GS contribute to the anti-EF effects of WEG remains unknown. Aim of the study: To evaluate the contribution of GP and GS to the anti-EF effects of WEG and clarify the potential gut microbiota-mediated mechanisms. Materials and methods: Firstly, the anti-EF effects of WEG, GP and GS were comparatively investigated by determining fatigue phenotypes (energy metabolism and oxidative stress parameters), gut microbiota composition as well as exogenous and endogenous metabolites in EF modeling rats. Then, the gut microbiota mediated mechanisms were verified by antibiotics (ABX) intervention and fecal microbial transplantation (FMT). Results: GP, GS and WEG each exhibited distinct anti-EF effects in differentially improving EF-induced energy metabolism abnormality and oxidative stress, reshaping gut microbiota composition, and elevating systemic metabolites. Notably, WEG showed stronger anti-EF effects than both GP and GS, characterized by better alleviation of disturbances in energy metabolism (e.g. Glc) and oxidative stress parameters (e.g. SOD), regulation of gut microbiota homeostasis (e.g. enriching the genus Coprococcus and species Collinsella provencensis etc.), as well as increases in exogenous secondary ginsenosides (e.g. 20(S)-Rg3, 20(R)-Rg3, CK), endogenous bile acids (BAs) (e.g. CA, DCA, LCA), and short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) (e.g. butyric acid). The stronger anti-EF effects of WEG compared to GP and GS could be abolished by ABX intervention, and transferred by FMT. Conclusion: GP and GS could collectively contribute to the anti-EF effects of WEG through integrated actions. Exploring the mechanism of anti-fatigue of resveratrol based on network pharmacology and molecular docking, and in vitro studies

Abstract:To investigate the potential mechanism of resveratrol in anti-fatigue by network pharmacology and molecular docking, and to investigate the anti-fatigue efficacy of resveratrol through in vitro animal experiments. Resveratrol action targets and fatigue-related targets were obtained using various databases. The anti-fatigue targets of resveratrol were obtained using the Venn diagram, uploaded to the String database, imported into Cytoscape 3.7.1, and constructed into a Protein-protein interaction network. The target genes were then subjected to Gene ontology and Kyoto encyclopedia of gene and genome enrichment analysis. Molecular docking verification was performed on the binding ability of the core target to resveratrol. Using swimming-trained mice as exercise models, exhaustive swimming time and fatigue-related biochemical parameters were used as indicators to investigate the effects of resveratrol on exercise endurance and energy metabolism. 104 anti-fatigue targets and 10 core target genes of resveratrol were obtained. KEGG analysis enrichment included AGE-RAGE signaling pathway in diabetic complications, Human cytomegalovirus infection, and Pathways in cancer. Molecular docking showed that the core target genes TP53, PIK3R1, AKT1, PIK3CA, and MAPK1 had good binding activity to resveratrol. Animal experiments showed that resveratrol could prolong the exhaustive swimming time of endurance-trained mice (P < 0.01), decrease aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, uric acid, blood lactate (P < 0.01), decrease blood urea nitrogen (P < 0.05), increase the liver glycogen, muscle glycogen (P < 0.01). Conclusion: Resveratrol has the characteristics of multiple targets and multiple pathways in anti-fatigue; resveratrol can enhance exercise endurance in mice.

Abstract:Alleviation of fatigue has been emerging as a serious issue that requires urgent attention. Health professionals and sports physiologists have been looking for active natural products and synthetic compounds to overcome fatigue in humans. This study was designed to define the anti-fatigue property of Rubus parvifolius L. (RPL) by characterization of active constituents using a mouse forced swimming test model. Four RPL fractions with different polarities containing anti-fatigue activity were sequentially isolated from the n-butanol RPL extract, followed by elution of 50% ethanol-water fraction from D101 macroporous resin chromatography to obtain nigaichigoside F1, suavissimoside R1 and coreanoside F1. Active constituents of the 50% ethanol-water eluate of RPL were total saponins. The fractions were examined based on the effect on weight-loaded swimming capacity of mice. Serum levels of urea nitrogen (SUN), triglyceride fatty acids (TG), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), lactic acid (LA), ammonia and hepatic glycogen (HG) were also examined for potential mechanisms underlying the anti-fatigue effect of RPL extracts. During the experiment, two inflammatory markers, interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α) in serum, were measured. We found that total saponins from RPL possess potent capabilities to alleviate mouse fatigue induced by forced swimming and that nigaichigoside F1 was responsible for the pharmacological effect. The underlying mechanisms include delays of SUN and LA accumulation, a decrease in TG level by increasing fat consumption, increases in HG and LDH so that lactic acid accumulation and ammonia in the muscle were reduced, and suppression of increased immune activation and inflammatory cytokine production. Our findings will be helpful for functional identification of novel anti-fatigue components from natural medicinal herbs.

Abstract:Fatigue is a physiological phenomenon experienced by the human body when it undergoes prolonged physical and mental exertion, which can have detrimental effects on both health and work productivity. Previous research has demonstrated that arctigenin (ArcG) has the ability to enhance the physical performance of mice during exercise. In this study, five ArcG derivatives containing different dipeptides coupled via an ethoxy linker were synthesized and tested for their activities to improve exercise performance in mice. All of the derivatives extended the exhaustion distance of mice in the running wheel test. Derivative Z-B-4 exhibited the highest activity, showing that the mice ran a distance 1.3-fold greater than that of the ArcG group and 3.4-fold greater than that of the sport control group. Furthermore, Z-B-4 was found to increase the concentrations of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT), while simultaneously decreasing levels of lactic acid (LA) and blood urea nitrogen (BUN) during exercise. This study provides new references and promising lead compounds for the development of antifatigue agents.

Abstract:This paper proposes a general approach to synthesize a class of Petri nets that model shared-resource automated manufacturing systems. The approach imposes minimal restrictions on the interactions among subsystems initially so that the modeler is given significant freedom. To modularize the synthesis procedure, a shared-resource system is formulated from the processes. i.e., the subsystems, that control the system resources and the interactions among the processes. For modeling the processes. Resource control nets are defined as the basic generic modules. Then, the system model is built by merging these modules through their common transitions and common transition subnets, which denote the interactions among the processes. The merged net is proven to be conservative and thus bounded. An algorithm is also developed to check two sufficient conditions for structural liveness of the net. This algorithm examines only the net's structure, and appears to be more efficient than state enumeration techniques such as the reachability graph method. >

Abstract:Natural plants from plateaus have been the richest source of secondary metabolites extensively used in traditional and modern health care systems. They were submitted to years of natural selection, co-evolved within that habitat, and show significant anti-fatigue-related pharmacological effects. However, currently, no review on high-altitude plants with anti-fatigue related properties has been published yet. This study summarized several Chinese traditional high-altitude plants, including Rhodiola rosea L., Crocus sativus L., Lepidium meyenii W., Hippophaerhamnoides L., which are widely used in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and surrounding mountains, as well as herbal markets in the plains. Based on phytopharmacology studies, deeper questions can be further revealed regarding how these plants regulate fatigue and related mental or physical disease conditions. Many active derivatives in high-altitude medical plants show therapeutic potential for the management of fatigue and related disorders. Therefore, high-altitude plants significantly relieve central or peripheral fatigue by acting as neuroprotective agents, energy supplements, metabolism regulators, antioxidant, and inflammatory response inhibitors. Their applications on the highland or flatland and prospects in natural medicine are further forecast, which may open treatments to reduce or prevent fatigue-related disorders in populations with sub-optimal health.

Abstract:The arbuscular mycorrhizal (AM) symbiosis, which forms between plant hosts and ubiquitous soil fungi of the phylum Glomeromycota, plays a key role for the nutrient uptake of the majority of land plants, including many economically important crop species. AM fungi take up nutrients from the soil and exchange them for photosynthetically fixed carbon from the host. While our understanding of the exact mechanisms controlling carbon and nutrient exchange is still limited, we recently demonstrated that (i) carbon acts as an important trigger for fungal N uptake and transport, (ii) the fungus changes its strategy in response to an exogenous supply of carbon, and that (iii) both plants and fungi reciprocally reward resources to those partners providing more benefit. Here, we summarize recent research findings and discuss the implications of these results for fungal and plant control of resource exchange in the AM symbiosis.
