Abstract:Sleep inertia is the brief period of performance impairment and reduced alertness experienced after waking, especially from slow-wave sleep. We assessed the efficacy of polychromatic short-wavelength-enriched light to improve vigilant attention, alertness and mood immediately after waking from slow-wave sleep at night. Twelve participants (six female, 23.3 ± 4.2 years) maintained an actigraphy-confirmed sleep schedule of 8.5 hr for 5 nights, and 5 hr for 1 night prior to an overnight laboratory visit. In the laboratory, participants were awakened from slow-wave sleep, and immediately exposed to either dim, red ambient light (control) or polychromatic short-wavelength-enriched light (light) for 1 hr in a randomized crossover design. They completed a 5-min Psychomotor Vigilance Task, the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale, and Visual Analogue Scales of mood at 2, 17, 32 and 47 min after waking. Following this testing period, lights were turned off and participants returned to sleep. They were awakened from their subsequent slow-wave sleep period and received the opposite condition. Compared with the control condition, participants exposed to light had fewer Psychomotor Vigilance Task lapses (χ2 [1] = 5.285, p = 0.022), reported feeling more alert (Karolinska Sleepiness Scale: F1,77 = 4.955, p = 0.029; Visual Analogue Scalealert : F1,77 = 8.226, p = 0.005), and reported improved mood (Visual Analogue Scalecheerful : F1,77 = 8.615, p = 0.004). There was no significant difference in sleep-onset latency between conditions following the testing period (t10 = 1.024, p = 0.330). Our results suggest that exposure to polychromatic short-wavelength-enriched light immediately after waking from slow-wave sleep at night may help improve vigilant attention, subjective alertness, and mood. Future studies should explore the potential mechanisms of this countermeasure and its efficacy in real-world environments.

The Efficacy of a Multimodal Bedroom-Based 'Smart' Alarm System on Mitigating the Effects of Sleep Inertia

Abstract:Previous work has demonstrated the modest impact of environmental interventions that manipulate lighting, sound, or temperature on sleep inertia symptoms. The current study sought to expand on previous work and measure the impact of a multimodal intervention that collectively manipulated light, sound, and ambient temperature on sleep inertia. Participants slept in the lab for four nights and were awoken each morning by either a traditional alarm clock or the multimodal intervention. Feelings of sleep inertia were measured each morning through Psychomotor Vigilance Test (PVT) assessments and ratings of sleepiness and mood at five time-points. While there was little overall impact of the intervention, the participant's chronotype and the length of the lighting exposure on intervention mornings both influenced sleep inertia symptoms. Moderate evening types who received a shorter lighting exposure (≤15 min) demonstrated more lapses relative to the control condition, whereas intermediate types exhibited a better response speed and fewer lapses. Conversely, moderate evening types who experienced a longer light exposure (>15 min) during the intervention exhibited fewer false alarms over time. The results suggest that the length of the environmental intervention may play a role in mitigating feelings of sleep inertia, particularly for groups who might exhibit stronger feelings of sleep inertia, including evening types.
Circadian-informed lighting improves vigilance, sleep, and subjective sleepiness during simulated night shift work

Abstract:Abstract Study Objectives Shiftwork is associated with cognitive impairment and reduced sleep time and quality, largely due to circadian misalignment. This study tested if circadian-informed lighting could improve cognitive performance and sleep during simulated night shifts versus dim control lighting. Methods Nineteen healthy participants (Mean±SD 29±10 years, 12 males, 7 females) were recruited to a laboratory study consisting of two counterbalanced 8-day lighting conditions (order randomized) 1-month apart: 1) control lighting condition- dim, blue-depleted and 2) circadian-informed lighting condition- blue-enriched and blue-depleted where appropriate. Participants underwent an adaptation night (22:00h – 07:00h), then four nights of simulated nightwork (cognitive testing battery of nine tasks, 00:00h – 08:00h) and sleep during the day (10:00h – 19:00h). Psychomotor vigilance task (PVT) lapses, Karolinska Sleepiness Scale (KSS) scores, and polysomnography-derived sleep outcomes were compared between conditions and across days using mixed models. Results Significant condition-by-day-by-time of task interaction effects were found for PVT lapses, median reaction time, and reaction speed, with ~50% fewer lapses by the end of simulated shiftwork with circadian-informed lighting versus control (mean±SD 7.4±5.0 vs. 15.6±6.1). KSS was lower around the nightshift midpoints on days 6 and 7 with circadian versus control lighting. Participants slept 52 minutes longer [95% CIs: 27.5, 76.5 mins] by Day 7 with circadian-informed versus control lighting, p<0.001. Effects were inconsistent on other performance tasks. Conclusions Circadian-informed lighting improved sleep, sleepiness, and vigilance compared to control lighting. These findings support the potential for lighting interventions to improve sleep and vigilance in night shift workers chronically exposed to dim lighting.

Abstract:Liver mitochondria take up Ca2+ by the Ca2+ uniporter, whereas at steady state efflux is believed to occur mainly by means of a ruthenium red-insensitive Ca2+/2H+ antiporter. The latter activity was studied in respiration-inhibited mitochondria in the presence of ruthenium red and was measured as Ca2+ uptake following acidification of the matrix by addition of nigericin, which catalyzes K+/H+ exchange. Ca2+ uptake was stimulated by protonophorous uncoupling agents and inhibited by increasing the concentration of ruthenium red. However, the rates were always smaller than those obtained by addition of valinomycin instead of nigericin. This indicates that under these conditions, Ca2+ fluxes are not mediated by a Ca2+/2H+ antiporter but by residual uniporter activity.
Effects of light intervention on alertness and mental performance during the post-lunch dip: a multi-measure study

Abstract:Disrupting sleepiness and fatigue during the post-lunch dip by environmental factors may result in a decrease in human errors and accidents, and enhance job performance. Recent studies have shown that both red white light as well as blue white light can have a positive effect on human alertness and mental functioning. In the present study, the light intervention was evaluated for its effectiveness on alleviating the post-lunch dip. Twenty healthy volunteers experienced 117 min of four light conditions preceded by a 13-min initial dim light while performing a continuous performance test (CPT) and undergoing recording of the electroencephalogram (EEG): blue-enriched white light (12,000 K, 500 lx, BWL), red saturated white light (2,700 K, 500 lx, RWL), normal white light (4,000 K, 500 lx, NWL), and dim light (<5 lx, DL) conditions. Other outcome measures were subjective sleepiness, mood, and performance tests (working memory, divided attention, and inhibitory capacity). We found that exposure to both BWL and RWL conditions decreased the lower alpha-band power compared to the NWL and DL conditions. No significant differences were observed in subjective sleepiness and mental performance during sustained attention, working memory, and inhibitory capacity tasks between NWL, RWL, and BWL conditions. The present findings suggest that both RWL and BWL, compared to NWL condition, can improve the physiological correlates of alertness in EEG measurements. However, these changes did not translate to improvements in task performance and subjective alertness.

Abstract:Disrupted sleep is common among nursing home patients and is associated with cognitive decline and reduced well-being. Sleep disruptions may in part be a result of insufficient daytime light exposure. This pilot study examined the effects of dynamic “circadian” lighting and individual light exposure on sleep, cognitive performance, and well-being in a sample of 14 senior home residents. The study was conducted as a within-subject study design over five weeks of circadian lighting and five weeks of conventional lighting, in a counterbalanced order. Participants wore wrist accelerometers to track rest–activity and light profiles and completed cognitive batteries (National Institute of Health (NIH) toolbox) and questionnaires (depression, fatigue, sleep quality, lighting appraisal) in each condition. We found no significant differences in outcome variables between the two lighting conditions. Individual differences in overall (indoors and outdoors) light exposure levels varied greatly between participants but did not differ between lighting conditions, except at night (22:00–6:00), with maximum light exposure being greater in the conventional lighting condition. Pooled data from both conditions showed that participants with higher overall morning light exposure (6:00–12:00) had less fragmented and more stable rest–activity rhythms with higher relative amplitude. Rest–activity rhythm fragmentation and long sleep duration both uniquely predicted lower cognitive performance.
Bright light therapy and early morning attention, mathematical performance, electroencephalography and brain connectivity in adolescents with morning sleepiness

Abstract:Adolescents typically sleep too little and feel drowsy during morning classes. We assessed whether morning use of an LED bright light device could increase alertness in school students. Twenty-six (8M/18F) healthy, unmedicated participants, ages 13-18 years, (mean 17.1±1.4) were recruited following screenings to exclude psychopathology. Baseline assessments were made of actigraph-assessed sleep, attention, math solving ability, electroencephalography and structural and functional MRI (N = 10-11, pre-post). Participants nonrandomly received 3-4 weeks of bright light therapy (BLT) for 30 minutes each morning and used blue light blocking glasses for 2 hours before bedtime. BLT devices were modified to surreptitiously record degree of use so that the hypothesis tested was whether there was a significant relationship between degree of use and outcome. They were used 57±18% (range 23%-90%) of recommended time. There was a significant association between degree of use and: (1) increased beta spectral power in frontal EEG leads (primary measure); (2) greater post-test improvement in math performance and reduction in errors of omission on attention test; (3) reduced day-to-day variability in bed times, sleep onset, and sleep duration during school days; (4) increased dentate gyrus volume and (5) enhanced frontal connectivity with temporal, occipital and cerebellar regions during Go/No-Go task performance. BLT was associated with improvement in sleep cycle consistency, arousal, attention and functional connectivity, but not sleep onset or duration (primary measures). Although this was an open study, it suggests that use of bright morning light and blue light blocking glasses before bed may benefit adolescents experiencing daytime sleepiness. Role of nocturnal light intensity on adaptation to three consecutive night shifts: a counterbalanced crossover study

Abstract:Objectives: To investigate how a standard ceiling mounted light-emitting diode (LED)-based bright light intervention affected alertness and neurobehavioural performance during three consecutive simulated night shifts, and timing of circadian rhythm after the shifts. Methods: Twenty seven participants (20 females, 21.4±2.1 years; mean±SD) worked three consecutive night shifts (23:00-07:00) under a full-spectrum (4000 K) bright light (900 lx) and a standard light (90 lx) condition in a counterbalanced crossover design (separated by 4 weeks). Subjective alertness (Karolinska Sleepiness Scale) and neurobehavioural performance (Psychomotor Vigilance Task and Digit Symbol Substitution Test) were assessed five times during each shift. Salivary dim-light melatonin onset (DLMO) was assessed before and after the shifts. The simulated night shifts were conducted in a laboratory while the participants slept at home. Results: Subjective alertness and neurobehavioural performance deteriorated during the night shifts in both light conditions. However, bright light significantly reduced alertness and performance decrements as compared with standard light. For a subset of the participants, DLMO was delayed by a mean of 3:17±0:23 (mean±SEM) hours after three night shifts in bright light and by 2:06±0:15 hours in standard light, indicating that bright light causes larger phase delay. Conclusion: Bright light improved performance and alertness during simulated night shifts and improved adaptation to night work. Bright light administered by ceiling mounted LED luminaires has the potential to improve adaptation to night work and reduce the risk of accidents and injuries among night workers. Does Bright Light Counteract the Post-lunch Dip in Subjective States and Cognitive Performance Among Undergraduate Students?

Abstract:The post-lunch dip in alertness and performance was widely experienced during the early afternoon. Taking a short nap was documented as a practical strategy for habitual nappers to counteract the decline of alertness and performance. Yet, it remains unknown whether bright light exposure in the early afternoon working hours could alleviate the performance deficits caused by a post-lunch nap loss for habitual nappers. Seventeen undergraduate students who had a long-term habit of taking a post-lunch nap were assigned to three interventions: (1) a short nap + normal indoor light (100 lx, 4,000 K at eye level); (2) no nap + normal indoor light, and (3) no nap + blue-enriched bright light (1,000 lx, 6,500 K at eye level), in which subjective alertness (Karolinska Sleepiness Scale, KSS), mood (Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, PANAS), and task performance in sustained attention (psychomotor vigilance test, PVT), response inhibition (go/no-go task), and working memory (paced visual serial addition test, PVSAT) were measured. Results showed that a post-lunch nap deprivation significantly increased subjective sleepiness and negative mood and impaired performance in PVT and PVSAT, while exposure to bright blue-enriched white light vs. normal indoor light in the early afternoon significantly relieved such negative effects on mood, sleepiness, and performance in PVSAT; subjective positive mood and performance in PVT and go/no-go task remained unaffected with light intervention. These findings suggested that bright blue-enriched white light exposure could be a potential strategy for those who are suffering from drowsiness and low working memory following a habitual midday nap loss.
Associations between light exposure and sleep timing and sleepiness while awake in a sample of UK adults in everyday life

Abstract:Experimental and interventional studies show that light can regulate sleep timing and sleepiness while awake by setting the phase of circadian rhythms and supporting alertness. The extent to which differences in light exposure explain variations in sleep and sleepiness within and between individuals in everyday life remains less clear. Here, we establish a method to address this deficit, incorporating an open-source wearable wrist-worn light logger (SpectraWear) and smartphone-based online data collection. We use it to simultaneously record longitudinal light exposure (in melanopic equivalent daylight illuminance), sleep timing, and subjective alertness over seven days in a convenience sample of 59 UK adults without externally imposed circadian challenge (e.g., shift work or jetlag). Participants reliably had strong daily rhythms in light exposure but frequently were exposed to less light during the daytime and more light in pre-bedtime and sleep episodes than recommended [T. M. Brown et al. , PLoS Biol. 20 , e3001571 (2022)]. Prior light exposure over several hours was associated with lower subjective sleepiness with, in particular, brighter light in the late sleep episode and after wake linked to reduced early morning sleepiness (sleep inertia). Higher pre-bedtime light exposure was associated with longer sleep onset latency. Early sleep timing was correlated with more reproducible and robust daily patterns of light exposure and higher daytime/lower night-time light exposure. Our study establishes a method for collecting longitudinal sleep and health/performance data in everyday life and provides evidence of associations between light exposure and important determinants of sleep health and performance.
Evaluation of the effects of blue-enriched white light on cognitive performance, arousal, and overall appreciation of lighting

Abstract:Introduction: Light's non-visual effects on the biological clock, cognitive performance, alertness, and mental health are getting more recognized. These are primarily driven by blue light, which triggers specific retinal cells containing melanopsin. Traditionally, research on light has relied on correlated color temperature (CCT) as a metric of its biological influence, given that bluer light corresponds to higher Kelvin values. However, CCT proves to be an inadequate proxy of light's biological effects. A more precise metric is melanopic Equivalent Daylight Illuminance (mel-EDI), which aligns with melanopsin spectrum. Studies have reported positive cognitive impacts of blue-enriched white light. It's unclear if the mixed results are due to different mel-EDI levels since this factor wasn't assessed. Method: Given recent recommendations from experts to aim for at least 250 mel-EDI exposure daily for cognitive benefits, our aim was to assess if a 50-minute exposure to LED light with 250 mel-EDI could enhance concentration and alertness, without affecting visual performance or comfort compared to conventional lighting producing around 150 mel-EDI. To ensure mel-EDI's impact, photopic lux levels were kept constant across conditions. Conditions were counterbalanced, parameters included subjective sleepiness (KSS; Karolinska Sleepiness Scale), concentration (d2-R test), visual performance (FrACT; Freiburg Visual Acuity and Contrast Test), general appreciation (VAS; Visual Analogous Scale), preferences and comfort (modified OLS; Office Lighting Survey). Results: The experimental light significantly reduced sleepiness (p = 0.03, Cohen's d = 0.42) and also decreased contrast sensitivity (p = 0.01, Cohen's d = 0.50). The conventional light was found to be more comfortable (p = 0.002, Cohen's d = 0.62), cheerful (p = 0.02, Cohen's d = 0.46) and pleasant (p = 0.005, Cohen's d = 0.55) while the experimental light was perceived as brighter (p = 0.004, Cohen's d = 0.58) and tended to be more stimulating (p = 0.10). Notably, there was a preference for conventional lighting (p = 0.004, Cohen's d=0.56) and concentration was equally improved in both conditions. Discussion: Despite the lack of further improvement in concentration from exposure to blue-enriched light, given the observed benefits in terms of vigilance, further research over an extended period would be justified. These findings could subsequently motivate cognitive optimization through lighting for workers that would benefit from artificial lighting such as in northern regions.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Sleep disturbances are common in elderly patients and may contribute to disease progression in certain populations (e.g., Alzheimer’s Disease). Light therapy is a simple and cost-effective intervention to improve sleep. Primary barriers to light therapy are 1) poor acceptability to use of devices and 2) inflexibility of current devices to deliver beyond a fixed spectrum and throughout the entirety of the day. However, dynamic, tunable lighting integrated into the native home lighting system can maximize short-wavelength light in the morning and minimize short-wavelength light in the evening, thus entraining circadian rhythms and treating sleep disturbances, and overcome these limitations. We determined the feasibility of implementing a whole-home tunable lighting system as a potential sleep intervention. Methods Tunable LED lights were installed throughout the homes of healthy older adults already enrolled in an existing study with embedded home assessment platforms (ORCATECH study; n=4 subjects in n=3 homes). In ORCATECH, continuous data on room location, activity, sleep, and general health parameters are collected at minute-to-minute resolution over months to years of participation. This single arm longitudinal design collected participants’ light usage in addition to ORCATECH outcome measures. Primary outcomes for this pilot study included the feasibility and patient acceptability. Exploratory outcomes were sleep metrics (sleep time, latency, efficiency), mobility (room transitions and actigraphy), and overall health indices (weekly body weight, self-report general health questionnaires) both pre- and post-intervention. Results Two subjects terminated the study citing technical difficulties with the lights and a preference for brighter illumination. Of the remaining 2 participants, sleep metrics were explored over a 12-month period spanning pre- and post-installation of lights. Nightly duration in bed was compared with minute-to-minute room entry data and actigraphy with high inter-measure reliability. Conclusion These data support that tunable whole-home lighting systems are reasonably acceptable and feasibly implemented using an automated platform for continuous data collection. Quantification of sleep over long periods of time is robust and reliable in the home environment of elderly subjects. These results will inform implementation of future large-scale lighting intervention studies in patients at risk for developing Alzheimer’s Disease. Operation early‐bird: Investigating altered light exposure in military barracks on sleep and performance—a placebo‐controlled study

Abstract:Summary The manipulation of light exposure in the evening has been shown to modulate sleep, and may be beneficial in a military setting where sleep is reported to be problematic. This study investigated the efficacy of low‐temperature lighting on objective sleep measures and physical performance in military trainees. Sixty‐four officer‐trainees (52 male/12 female, mean ± SD age: 25 ± 5 years) wore wrist‐actigraphs for 6 weeks during military training to quantify sleep metrics. Trainee 2.4‐km run time and upper‐body muscular‐endurance were assessed before and after the training course. Participants were randomly assigned to either: low‐temperature lighting (LOW, n = 19), standard‐temperature lighting with a placebo "sleep‐enhancing" device (PLA, n = 17), or standard‐temperature lighting (CON, n = 28) groups in their military barracks for the duration of the course. Repeated‐measures ANOVAs were run to identify significant differences with post hoc analyses and effect size calculations performed where indicated. No significant interaction effect was observed for the sleep metrics; however, there was a significant effect of time for average sleep duration, and small benefits of LOW when compared with CON (d = 0.41–0.44). A significant interaction was observed for the 2.4‐km run, with the improvement in LOW (Δ92.3 s) associated with a large improvement when compared with CON (Δ35.9 s; p = 0.003; d = 0.95 ± 0.60), but not PLA (Δ68.6 s). Similarly, curl‐up improvement resulted in a moderate effect in favour of LOW (Δ14 repetitions) compared with CON (Δ6; p = 0.063; d = 0.68 ± 0.72). Chronic exposure to low‐temperature lighting was associated with benefits to aerobic fitness across a 6‐week training period, with minimal effects on sleep measures.

Daytime Exposure to Short Wavelength-Enriched Light Improves Cognitive Performance in Sleep-Restricted College-Aged Adults

Abstract:We tested the effect of daytime indoor light exposure with varying melanopic strength on cognitive performance in college-aged students who maintained an enforced nightly sleep opportunity of 7 h (i.e., nightly sleep duration no longer than 7 h) for 1 week immediately preceding the day of light exposure. Participants ( n = 39; mean age ± SD = 24.5 ± 3.2 years; 21 F) were randomized to an 8 h daytime exposure to one of four white light conditions of equal photopic illuminance (~50 lux at eye level in the vertical plane) but different melanopic illuminance [24–45 melanopic-EDI lux (melEDI)] generated by varying correlated color temperatures [3000K (low-melEDI) or 5000K (high-melEDI)] and spectra [conventional or daylight-like]. Accuracy on a 2-min addition task was 5% better in the daylight-like high-melEDI condition (highest melEDI) compared to the conventional low-melEDI condition (lowest melEDI; p < 0.01). Performance speed on the motor sequence learning task was 3.2 times faster ( p < 0.05) during the daylight-like high-melEDI condition compared to the conventional low-melEDI. Subjective sleepiness was 1.5 times lower in the conventional high-melEDI condition compared to the conventional low-melEDI condition, but levels were similar between conventional low- and daylight-like high-melEDI conditions. These results demonstrate that exposure to high-melanopic (short wavelength-enriched) white light improves processing speed, working memory, and procedural learning on a motor sequence task in modestly sleep restricted young adults, and have important implications for optimizing lighting conditions in schools, colleges, and other built environments.

Abstract:Objectives: Rotating shift work is associated with adverse outcomes due to circadian misalignment, sleep curtailment, work-family conflicts, and other factors. We tested a bright light countermeasure to enhance circadian adaptation on a counterclockwise rotation schedule. Methods: Twenty-nine adults (aged 20-40 years; 15 women) participated in a 4-week laboratory simulation with weekly counterclockwise transitions from day, to night, to evening, to day shifts. Each week consisted of five 8-hour workdays including psychomotor vigilance tests, two days off, designated 8-hour sleep episodes every day, and an assessment of circadian melatonin secretion. Participants were randomized to a treatment group (N=14), receiving intermittent bright light during work designed to facilitate circadian adaptation, or a control group (N=15) working in indoor light. Adaptation was measured by how much of the melatonin secretion episode overlapped with scheduled sleep timing. Results: On the last night shift, there was a greater overlap between melatonin secretion and scheduled sleep time in the treatment group [mean 4.90, standard deviation (SD) 2.8 hours] compared to the control group (2.62, SD 2.8 hours; P=0.002), with night shift adaptation strongly influenced by baseline melatonin timing (r2=-0.71, P=0.01). While the control group exhibited cognitive deficits on the last night shift, the treatment group's cognitive deficits on the last night and evening shifts were minimized. Conclusions: In this laboratory setting, intermittent bright light during work hours enhanced adaptation to night work and subsequent readaptation to evening and day work. Light regimens scheduled to shift circadian timing should be tested in actual shift workers on counterclockwise schedules as a workplace intervention.
Effectiveness of caffeine and blue-enriched light on cognitive performance and electroencephalography correlates of alertness in a spaceflight robotics simulation

Abstract:Human cognitive impairment associated with sleep loss, circadian misalignment and work overload is a major concern in any high stress occupation but has potentially catastrophic consequences during spaceflight human robotic interactions. Two safe, wake-promoting countermeasures, caffeine and blue-enriched white light have been studied on Earth and are available on the International Space Station. We therefore conducted a randomized, placebo-controlled, cross-over trial examining the impact of regularly timed low-dose caffeine (0.3 mg per kg per h) and moderate illuminance blue-enriched white light (~90 lux, ~88 melEDI lux, 6300 K) as countermeasures, separately and combined, in a multi-night simulation of sleep-wake shifts experienced during spaceflight among 16 participants (7 F, ages 26-55). We find that chronic administration of low-dose caffeine improves subjective and objective correlates of alertness and performance during an overnight work schedule involving chronic sleep loss and circadian misalignment, although we also find that caffeine disrupts subsequent sleep. We further find that 90 lux of blue-enriched light moderately reduces electroencephalogram (EEG) power in the theta and delta regions, which are associated with sleepiness. These findings support the use of low-dose caffeine and potentially blue-enriched white light to enhance alertness and performance among astronauts and shiftworking populations.

Abstract:A modern physics facility must synchronize the operation of equipment over a wide area. The primary purpose of the site wide SNS synchronization and timing system is to synchronize the operation of the LINAC, accumulator ring and neutron choppers and to distribute appropriate timing signals to accelerator systems, including the Injector, LINAC, Accumulator Ring and Experimental Facilities. Signals to be distributed include the ring RF clock, real-time timing triggers, machine mode and other informational events. Timing triggers and clocks from the SNS synchronization and timing system are used to synchronize hardware operations including the MEBT beam chopper, RF turn on, synchronous equipment state changes, as well as data acquisition for power supplies and beam diagnostics equipment. This paper will describe the timing equipment being designed for the SNS facility and discuss the tradeoffs between conflicting demands of the accelerator and neutron chopper performance due to AC power grid frequency fluctuations.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction Increased blue-enriched morning light is often said to support circadian rhythm synchronization. Through a better sleep quality, one's cognitive and emotional functioning can also be enhanced. However, it is unclear which light characteristics (especially illuminance at eye level) are necessary to obtain a wellbeing effect in employees. This field study investigated different lighting conditions in a truck factory. Methods 71 shift workers participated in the study during their morning shift (6 am - 2 pm). Measurements of sleep (MotionWatch8), attention (D2 attention task, go no-go computer task) and visual comfort (questionnaire) were administered before and after changing the lighting conditions. A Human Centric Lighting-condition (HCL; vertical melanopic equivalent daylight illuminance (MEDI) = 250 lux, CCT=5000 K; N = 33) was compared with a control LED-condition (MEDI = 44 lux, CCT=4000K; N = 38). Results Results show that workers in the HCL-condition showed a larger improvement in sleep efficiency (p=.057) and concentration (p=.01) than the control LED-group. No differences were found in visual comfort between groups. Discussion Preliminary results are promising and show that 250 MEDI might be a sufficient cut-off to stimulate workers' sleep and cognition. The high illuminance level was not detrimental in the HCL condition for the perceived visual comfort. Key messages Blue-enriched morning light supports sleep and concentration in shift workers. High illuminance levels are not detrimental for the perceived visual comfort.

Abstract:Abstract Introduction In the acute phase following a stroke, circadian rhythmicity is often disrupted, which undermines sleep, produces fatigue, and impedes recovery. Studies have reported post-stroke sleep architecture abnormalities, as well as acute sleep disorders which can range between extremes of clinically significant insomnia to hypersomnia, with sleep complaints sometimes persisting for months or years. Morning blue light exposure as an early, non-pharmacologic intervention targeted for strengthening circadian rhythmicity could provide acute relief and prevent disordered sleep from becoming chronic following stroke. Methods A randomized, single-blind, parallel group, placebo-controlled pilot study compared daily morning exposure to blue light or red light (placebo) for improving daytime sleepiness, fatigue, nocturnal sleep, and cognition in patients receiving inpatient rehabilitation for acute stroke. N=43 patients with disordered sleep secondary to first episode stroke (n=34 ischemic, n=9 hemorrhagic; ages 66.2±14.1y) were randomized to receive 25min of morning blue or red light for 5 or more days depending on inpatient rehabilitation length of stay (blue n=21, red n=22). At baseline and study discharge, daytime sleepiness was measured with the Karolinska Sleepiness Scale and Wits Pictorial Sleepiness Scale, fatigue with a visual analogue scale, and cognitive function with the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test and Trail Making Test (TMT). Actigraphy measured sleep continuously throughout participation with nighttime sleep defined as 21:00–05:59. Effect sizes per outcome were used to estimate sample sizes for larger follow-up studies. Results Participants with blue light exposure experienced significant improvements in daytime sleepiness, fatigue, and auditory verbal learning (all p<.05) relative to red light exposure. There was a trend toward a greater mean duration of nighttime sleep (p=.076) and fewer awakenings after sleep onset (p=.092) in the blue light compared to red light group. Although change in TMT and nocturnal sleep parameters did not reach statistical significance, effect sizes favored blue-light exposure, ranging from .38–.57. Conclusion Morning blue light exposure for 5 or more days led to greater improvements in daytime sleepiness, fatigue, and cognitive outcomes than red light exposure after acute stroke.
