Abstract:This research paper investigates a new 3D handling process in food industry: bin picking. Machines only function effectively when the input of product is physically well organised, well structured, and consistent. At many stages in a typical production line, foodstuffs are physically arranged as they move through a machine or equipment, however, this order is then lost again as products are ejected onto conveyors, bulked together into bins for transport, taken off-line for chilled storage. Bin picking is generally not solved for manufacturing parts. Unlike food ordering processes such as pick and place operations, vibratory feeders etc., this food handling operation has not been applied to food industry neither. A new approach is presented using the Microsoft Kinect™ sensor and Active Shape Models. By combining the new device that obtains an RGB and RGB-D image and the flexible shape model, it is possible to identify non-uniform food products that have a high variation in shape. The methodology of this system is presented. The experiments show the achievability of this new system.

Abstract:PURPOSE:This study sought to examine the utility of eating expectancy, thinness expectancy, and the interactive role of both, in predicting eating disturbances (viz., bulimic symptoms and drive for thinness) in European American and Chinese female college students.METHODS:A sample of 237 European American and 221 Chinese female college students completed measures of eating and thinness expectancies and eating disturbances.RESULTS:Results of hierarchical regression analyses revealed that thinness expectancy significantly predicted increases in both drive for thinness and bulimic symptoms (with these increases being greater for European Americans), whereas eating expectancy predicted increases in bulimic symptoms only. In addition, for European Americans, a significant interaction for bulimic symptoms was found, revealing a synergistic increase in bulimic symptoms for those with both a high thinness expectancy and a high eating expectancy. For Chinese, a significant interaction for drive for thinness was found, demonstrating that for those with a high thinness expectancy, a higher eating expectancy was actually associated with a lower drive for thinness.CONCLUSION:The present findings point to the value of examining for the co-presence of both expectancies in predicting eating disturbances while also highlighting cultural variations in the study of eating pathology.LEVEL OF EVIDENCE:Descriptive cross-sectional study, level V.

Abstract:Objective: In cross-sectional and retrospective research, parental binge eating is associated with their children's eating psychopathology. The current study extended the evidence by cross-sectionally and longitudinally examining the relation between parental binge eating and binge eating and weight-control behaviors in the next generation of their adolescent children and young adult children in a population-based sample. Methods: Adolescents (Time 1: M = 14.5, SD = 2.0 years) (n = 2367), followed into adulthood (Time 2: M = 22.1, SD = 2.0 years), and their parents (n = 3664) were enrolled in EAT 2010-2018 and Project F-EAT 2010. The current study examined parental binge eating, and child binge eating and weight-control behaviors. Adjusted models covaried for child gender, age, and race/ethnicity. Results: Approximately 7% of adolescents at Time 1 had at least one parent who reported binge eating with no differences by child's age, gender, or race/ethnicity. Having at least one parent experiencing binge eating at Time 1 (vs. not) was associated cross-sectionally with adolescent children's use of extreme weight-control behaviors (9.6% vs. 4.8%; Risk Difference [RD] = 4.9%) and associated longitudinally with binge eating during young adulthood (21.1% vs. 11.6%; RD = 9.5%). Other associations did not reach statistical significance. Conclusions: Children of parents with binge eating appear to have elevated risk of extreme weight-control behaviors during adolescence and binge eating in young adulthood. Clinicians should assess whether eating psychopathology extends to other family members, and offer additional support to parents with binge eating. Further research is needed to identify risk factors in the children of parents with binge eating and to assess strategies for prevention.

Abstract:Although research has illustrated that racial disparities in access to treatment for binge-eating disorder (BED) among Black women exist, little is known about the psychosocial related experiences of binge eating behaviors among Black women. Binge eating disorder is characterized by the recurrent consumption of large amounts of food within a brief period, accompanied by a loss of sense of control over the eating and distress over the eating behaviors. Past research has shown that race and gender related stressors are positively associated with emotional eating among Black young adult women and that they may engage in problem-solving coping strategies like identity shifting (conscious and unconscious alterations of thoughts, behaviors, perspective, and appearances) to manage these stressors. Considering the literature, the present study was developed to examine the mediating role of identity shifting in the relationship between gendered racism and binge eating symptoms among young adult Black women. To test this assertion, we administered an online survey to 239 Black women (Mage = 27.32). The results indicated that gender racism significantly predicted both identity shifting and binge eating and identity shifting significantly predicted binge eating. Additionally, identity shifting accounted for 34.5 % of the associations between gendered racism and binge eating symptoms. These findings highlight the importance of exploring experiences of discrimination and coping strategies when considering ways to reduce mental health concerns, such as binge eating symptoms, among young adult Black women.

Abstract:Objective: This observational study compared children with and without binge eating (BE) on biobehavioral measures of reward responsiveness, inhibitory control, and emotion processes, while accounting for the impact of weight. Method: Children aged 9-10 completed the baseline wave of the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study (316 with BE; 7,681 without BE [no-BE]). The prevalence of binge-eating disorder in the BE group was 17.0%; clinically significant internalizing and externalizing symptoms were endorsed by 8.5% and 4.5% of the sample, respectively. The monetary incentive delay (MID) task, stop signal task (SST), and emotional N-back (EN-back) task were administered during neuroimaging. Analyses assessed effects of group (BE vs. no-BE) on task performance and corresponding neural signal in regions of interest (ROIs). Weight status was evaluated as a covariate and as a moderator of effects. Results: Adjusting for weight status, the BE group (vs. no-BE) group showed lower activation during anticipation of reward, specifically large reward (vs. no reward), in the composite ROI consisting of the dorsal striatum, nucleus accumbens, orbital frontal gyrus, amygdala and insula. Groups did not differ significantly in other behavioral or neural outcomes. No interactions between group and weight status were observed. Conclusion: Blunted anticipatory responses to monetary reward were associated with binge eating during peri-adolescence and may play a role in binge eating pathophysiology. Results challenge prior findings in BE that may be confounded by weight, as well as highlight the importance of future prospective research across binge-eating disorder stage of illness.

Abstract:Chronic degenerative diseases and traumatic injuries are responsible for a decline in neuronal function. Cell transplantation is one of the strategies with potential for treatment of such neural disorders, and many kinds of cells including embryonic stem cells and neural stem cells have been considered as candidates for transplantation therapy. Bone marrow stromal cells (MSCs) have great potential as therapeutic agents since they are easy to isolate and can be expanded from patients without serious ethical and technical problems. We found a method for the highly efficient and specific induction of functional neurons, skeletal muscle cells and Schwann cells from both rat and human MSCs. Induced neurons and Schwann cells were transplanted to animal models of Parkinson's disease, stroke, peripheral nerve injury, and spinal cord injury, resulting in the successful integration of transplanted cells and improvement in behavior of transplanted animals. Induced skeletal muscle cells differentiate into muscle fibers upon transplantation into degenerated muscles of rats and mdx-nude mice. The induced population contained Pax7-positive cells that contribute to subsequent regeneration of muscle upon repetitive damage without additional transplantation of cells. Here we focus on the respective potentials of MSC-derived cells and discuss the possibility of clinical application in neurodegenerative and muscle degenerative diseases.
Subjective and objective binge eating in relation to eating disorder symptomatology, depressive symptoms, and self-esteem among treatment-seeking adolescents with bulimia nervosa

Abstract:This study investigated the importance of the distinction between objective (OBE) and subjective binge eating (SBE) among 80 treatment-seeking adolescents with bulimia nervosa. We explored relationships among OBEs, SBEs, eating disorder (ED) symptomatology, depression, and self-esteem using two approaches. Group comparisons showed that OBE and SBE groups did not differ on ED symptoms or self-esteem; however, the SBE group had significantly greater depression. Examining continuous variables, OBEs (not SBEs) accounted for significant unique variance in global ED pathology, vomiting, and self-esteem. SBEs (not OBEs) accounted for significant unique variance in restraint and depression. Both OBEs and SBEs accounted for significant unique variance in eating concern; neither accounted for unique variance in weight/shape concern, laxative use, diuretic use, or driven exercise. Loss of control, rather than amount of food, may be most important in defining binge eating. Additionally, OBEs may indicate broader ED pathology, while SBEs may indicate restrictive/depressive symptomatology.
Sociodemographic correlates of parent and youth-reported eating disorder symptoms in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study

Abstract:: Eating Disorders (EDs) often start in adolescence, though ED-related concerns in diverse youth samples remain understudied. We leveraged data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study to identify the prevalence of parent- and youth-reported ED symptoms and their sociodemographic characteristics. : Data were drawn from baseline (ages 9-11 years, n=11,868) and 2-year follow-up (ages 11-14 years; n=10,908) from the ABCD Study. A tetrachoric factor analysis summarized clusters of ED symptoms, which were compared between parent and youth reports and across sociodemographic variables. : Three factors emerged reflecting "weight distress", "weight control", and "binge eating" (prevalence range: 1.5-7.3%). Symptoms loaded onto similar factors between reporters. Rates of symptom endorsement were similar between sexes, with disproportionately higher endorsement rates for youth who self-identified as sexual minority, Hispanic, Black, or Mixed race participants, and those from a disadvantaged socioeconomic background, compared to the reference ABCD sample. Youth and parent reports at 2-year showed ~12% overlap. : ED-related concerns among historically understudied racial and sexual minority groups call for greater attention to the detection and treatment of these symptoms in these groups. Applying a transdiagnostic approach to ED symptoms can inform effective detection and intervention efforts.

Loneliness as a moderator of the association of affective symptoms and binge eating among college women

Abstract:Affective symptoms (e.g., depression, anxiety, shame) are a potent risk factor for binge eating. However, less is known on the role of loneliness as a moderator of affective symptoms and binge eating. This objective of the current study was to investigate main effects and interactions of affective symptoms and loneliness in relation to binge eating in college women. A sample of 556 undergraduate women completed self-report questionnaires of affective symptoms, loneliness, and binge eating. Results revealed significant interactions between each affective symptom variable and loneliness in relation to binge eating, such that loneliness strengthened the positive association of affective symptoms and greater binge eating. The findings of this study demonstrate an important role of loneliness to binge eating among college women, especially those with underlying affective vulnerabilities. More theoretical and treatment-oriented work on the role of loneliness in binge eating is needed to understand mechanisms and interventions/preventions.

Abstract:Objective: To explore the relationship between symptoms of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), symptoms of binge eating disorder, and body mass index (BMI) among students at a southern university. Participants: Two hundred seventy-seven college students. Methods: Between January 31, 2013 and March 27, 2013, participants completed the Adult ADHD Self-Report Scale (ASRS) Screener and the Binge Eating Scale (BES) in addition to permitting researchers to measure their height and weight. Results: Higher ASRS scores, higher BMIs, and lower BES scores were observed among men. Among both men and women, BES scores were positively correlated with BMI and ASRS scores; however, the correlation between ASRS and BMI was not significant. Conclusion: Binge eating disorder symptomatology was associated with increased ADHD symptomatology and a higher BMI among both men and women. Among students presenting with obesity or ADHD, screening for binge eating may assist with the identification of problematic eating behaviors.

Abstract:Anxiety sensitivity (AS) – characterized by a persistent fear that arousal-related bodily sensations will lead to serious cognitive, physical, and/or social consequences – is associated with various psychopathologies, including depressive symptoms and binge eating. This 3-week, 3-wave longitudinal study examined the relation between AS (including its global AS factor and lower-order AS cognitive, physical, and social concern dimensions), depressive symptoms, and binge eating among 410 undergraduates from two universities. Using generalized estimating equation models, we found that global AS, AS social concerns, and depressive symptoms predicted binge eating during any given week. Mediation analyses showed that global AS (as a latent variable with its lower-order AS dimensions as indicators), AS cognitive concerns, and AS physical concerns at Wave 1 predicted subsequent increases in depressive symptoms at Wave 2, which, in turn, led to increases in binge eating at Wave 3. Findings contribute to a better understanding of the interplay between AS, depressive symptoms, and binge eating, highlighting the role of binge eating as a potential coping mechanism for individuals with high AS, particularly in managing depressive symptoms. This study underscores the importance of AS-targeted intervention and prevention efforts in addressing depressive symptoms and binge eating.

Abstract:Background: Binge eating disorder is an autonomous DSM-V diagnosis characterized by discrete rapid consumption of objectively large amounts of food without compensation, associated with loss of control and distress. Environmental factors that contribute to binge eating disorder continue to evolve. This mixed-methods cross-sectional study assessed whether there is consensus among experts in the field about environmental factors that influence adult binge eating disorder pathology. Methods: Fourteen expert binge eating disorder researchers, clinicians, and healthcare administrators were identified internationally based on federal funding, PubMed-indexed publications, active practice in the field, leadership in relevant societies, and/or clinical and popular press distinction. Semi-structured interviews were recorded anonymously and analyzed by ≥2 investigators using reflexive thematic analysis and quantification. Results: Identified themes included: (1) systemic issues and systems of oppression (100%); (2) marginalized and under-represented populations (100%); (3) economic precarity and food/nutrition insecurity/scarcity (93%); (4) stigmatization and its psychological impacts (93%); (5) trauma and adversity (79%); (6) interpersonal factors (64%); (7) social messaging and social media (50%); (8) predatory food industry practices (29%); and (9) research/clinical gaps and directives (100%). Conclusions: Overall, experts call for policy changes around systemic factors that abet binge eating and for greater public education about who can have binge eating disorder. There is also a call to take and account for the narratives and life experiences of individuals with binge eating disorder to better inform our current understanding of the diagnosis and the environmental factors that impact it.

Abstract:Background Disordered eating in early adolescence impacts development, with long‐term health implications. Minoritised adolescents might be at higher risk of disordered eating due to minority stress, but most research has focused on White, heterosexual, cisgender individuals; less is known about disordered eating among minoritised adolescents. We examined sexual, gender, racial, and ethnic identities in relation to disordered eating in early adolescence. Method Using 2‐year follow‐up data from adolescents ages 10–14 in the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development Study (N = 9385), we examined associations between sexual, gender, racial, and ethnic identities and past‐2 week disordered eating (preoccupation with weight, weight control behaviors, and binge eating). Results Compared to heterosexual peers, gay/bisexual adolescents had higher odds of all three outcomes (AOR 1.90–3.32); those "questioning" their sexual identity had higher odds of preoccupation with weight (AOR 1.82) and binge eating (AOR 2.53). Compared to cisgender adolescents, transgender adolescents had higher odds of binge eating (AOR 2.62); those "questioning" their gender identity had higher odds of preoccupation with weight (AOR 2.45). Adolescents whose racial identity was categorised as "Another" had higher odds of preoccupation with weight (AOR 1.46) and weight control behaviors (AOR 1.58) compared to White adolescents. Finally, Hispanic adolescents had higher odds of all disordered eating outcomes than non‐Hispanic adolescents (AOR 1.25–1.59). Discussion This study is among the first to reveal disparities in disordered eating among minoritised early adolescents. Further examination of these disparities can inform future interventions. Healthcare providers are encouraged to screen for disordered eating, recognising that minoritised early adolescents may be at risk.

Abstract:Abstract Background Binge eating is a relatively common disordered eating behavior among children, and is associated with poor health outcomes. Executive function (EF)—higher order cognitive abilities related to planning and impulse control—may be implicated in both binge eating and pediatric obesity. Although EF deficits are evident among individuals with obesity and/or binge eating, findings are mixed across the lifespan. Methods The present study examined differences in EF among children with varying weight statuses and parent‐reported binge eating. The sample included 10,017 children from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development study, aged 9–10 years. Results Children with parent‐reported binge eating—either with overweight/obesity or normal weight—had significantly lower EF than those with no binge eating and a normal weight status but did not differ from those with no binge eating and overweight/obesity. Children with no binge eating and overweight/obesity also had statistically significantly lower EF than those with normal weight status. Although all significant differences between groups were negligible to very small, results may indicate similar neurocognitive profiles among children with binge eating and those with overweight/obesity. Conclusions Alterations in EF among children with binge eating may not be solely related to weight‐specific factors, as significant differences also emerged among children with normal weight status, with versus without parent‐reported binge eating. Future research is needed to understand temporal associations between obesity, disordered eating, and neurocognition in children using multi‐informant methods for assessing binge eating.
Associations Between Gender Diversity and Eating Disorder Symptoms in Early Adolescence

Abstract:Objective To assess associations between multiple dimensions of gender diversity with eating disorder symptoms in a national cohort of U.S. early adolescents. Method This cross‐sectional study utilized data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study (N = 10,092, Mage = 12.9 years, 2019–2021). Gender diversity was measured using multiple dimensions, including categorical gender identity (e.g., transgender, cisgender), categorical and continuous felt gender (congruence between gender identity and assigned sex), ordinal gender non‐contentedness (dissatisfaction with one's gender), and ordinal gender expression (communication of gender through appearance and mannerisms). Multivariable logistic regression models were used to analyze the associations among gender diversity measures and eating disorder symptoms, adjusting for potential confounders. Results Greater felt gender diversity was associated with self‐worth tied to weight (OR 1.30, 95% CI 1.11–1.53), binge eating (OR 1.24, 95% CI 1.06–1.46), and distress with binge eating (OR 1.32, 95% CI 1.09–1.59). Greater gender expression diversity was associated with self‐worth tied to weight (OR 1.16, 95% CI 1.02–1.33), distress with binge eating (OR 1.26, 95% CI 1.04–1.51), and characteristics of binge eating episodes (OR 1.33, 95% CI 1.06–1.66). Gender non‐contentedness was associated with self‐worth tied to weight (OR 1.38, 95% CI 1.20–1.58) and compensatory behaviors related to weight gain (OR 1.12, 95% CI 1.01–1.26). Transgender identity was not significantly associated with any eating disorder symptoms. Discussion We found that greater gender diversity across multiple dimensions was associated with various eating disorder symptoms, and that measures beyond binary gender identity may be important to assess gender diversity in early adolescence.

Abstract:Emotional eating is associated with an increased risk of binge eating, eating in the absence of hunger and obesity risk. While previous studies with children and adolescents suggest that emotion regulation may be a key predictor of this dysregulated eating behavior, little is known about what other factors may be influencing the link between emotional regulation and emotional eating in adolescence. This multi-method longitudinal study (n = 138) utilized linear regression models to examine associations between childhood emotion regulation, adolescent weight status and negative body image, and emotional eating at age 17. Emotion regulation predicted adolescent emotional eating and this link was moderated by weight status (β = 1.19, p < 0.01) and negative body image (β = −0.34, p < 0.01). Higher engagement in emotional eating was predicted by lower emotional regulation scores among normal-weight teens (β = −0.46, p 0.10). Higher scores on emotion regulation were significantly associated with lower emotional eating at high (β = −1.59, p < 0.001) and low (β = −1.00, p < 0.01) levels of negative body image. Engagement in emotional eating was predicted by higher negative body image among overweight/obese teens only (β = 0.70, p < 0.001). Our findings show that while better childhood emotion regulation skills are associated with lower emotional eating, weight status and negative body image influence this link and should be considered as important foci in future interventions that aim to reduce emotional eating in adolescence.

Abstract:Objective This study investigated longitudinal relationships between social media usage and binge eating (BE) in early adolescence and explored potential moderating effects of sex and BMI. Methods Data from the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study, including 1940 participants aged 11 to 12 years at Wave 1, were analyzed over three annual waves. Social media addiction (SMA) scores and time spent on social media were calculated from self‐report questionnaires. BE symptoms were evaluated using the Kiddie Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia (KSADS‐5) through self‐reports and parent reports. Modified Poisson regression was used to estimate associations, adjusting for demographic and behavioral covariates. Results SMA symptoms, but not time on social media, were cross‐sectionally and prospectively associated with BE. Prospective associations were stronger in male adolescents and differed by baseline body weight. The consistently high SMA group showed the strongest association with follow‐up BE compared with the consistently low SMA group, whereas decreased and increased SMA groups showed similarly positive associations. Conclusions SMA scores predict BE in early adolescence, with differentiation in the relationship by sex and weight status. Further observational and interventional research could illuminate underlying mechanisms and test the value of targeting social media‐addictive behaviors to mitigate the risk of disordered eating.

Abstract:BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVESBinge drinking disparities between sexual and gender minority (SGM) students and their heterosexual, cisgender peers are well-established. Data limitations have precluded understandings of whether the onset and progression of these disparities differ by grade. Additionally, little is known about whether and how SGM-related binge drinking varies across groups of students coincidingly defined by sexual orientation or gender identity (SOGI), race, and ethnicity. In the current study, we used a large, statewide sample of secondary school students in California to describe the prevalence of binge drinking among subgroups of adolescents at the intersections of grade, race and ethnicity, and SOGI.METHODSData were from the 2017–2019 cycle of the California Healthy Kids Survey, one of the largest statewide cross-sectional surveys of secondary school students in the United States ( n = 925 744). We described the grade-specific prevalence rates of past 30-day binge drinking by (1) grade level, (2) race and ethnicity, and (3) SOGI. Predicted probabilities estimated adjusted percentages of students' binge drinking by subgroups.RESULTSSGM-related binge drinking differences were present early in secondary school. Several subgroups of SGM adolescents with minoritized racial and ethnic identities reported higher binge drinking rates relative to their same-grade, white, non-SGM peers.CONCLUSIONSPrevention and intervention programs must consider developmentally- and culturally-informed strategies to most effectively promote health among minoritized students.
