Abstract:The efficient, safe and eco-friendly disposal of the chromium-containing sludge (CCS) has attracted an increasing concern. In this study, Co-processing of CCS was developed via employing sintering and ironmaking combined technology for its harmless disposal and resource utilization. Crystalline phase and valence state transformation of chromium (Cr), technical feasibility assessment, leaching risk, characteristics of sintered products, and pollutant release during CCS co-processing were investigated through a series of laboratory-scale sintering pot experiments and large scale industrial trials. The results showed that the content of Cr(VI) in sintered products first increased then decreased with increasing temperature ranges of 300 °C–800 °C, and reached a maximum of 2189.64 mg/kg at 500 °C. 99.99% of Cr(VI) can be reduced to Cr(III) at above 1000 °C, which was attributed to the transformation of the Cr(VI)-containing crystalline phases (such as, MgCrO 4 and CaCrO 4 ) to the (Mg, Fe 2+ )(Cr, Al, Fe 3+ ) 2 O 4 . The industrial trial results showed that adding 0.5 wt‰ CCS to sintering feed did not have adverse effects on the properties of the sintered ore and the plant's operating stability. The tumbler index of sinter was above 78% and the leaching concentrations of TCr (0.069 mg/L) was significantly lower than the Chinese National Standard of 1.0 mg/L (GB5085.3–2007). The TCr contents of sintering dust and blast furnace gas (BFG) scrubbing water were less than 0.19 wt‰ and 0.11 mg/L, respectively, which was far below the regulatory limit (1.5 mg/L, GB13456-2012). The mass balance evaluation results indicated that at least 89.9% of the Cr in the CCS migrated into the molten iron in the blast furnace (BF), which became a useful supplement to the molten iron. This study provided a new perspective strategy for the safe disposal and resource utilization of CCS in iron and steel industry.

Abstract:Abstract A new synergistic treatment of stainless steel slag and low zinc content electric arc furnace (EAF) dusts is proposed to immobilize harmful chromium in stainless steel slag. The effects of ZnFe 2 O 4 addition on the mineralogic phase and chromium leachability of CaO-SiO 2 -MgO-Al 2 O 3 -Cr 2 O 3 synthetic slag were investigated to explore the feasibility of this method. The mineralogic phases in stainless steel slag were investigated by scanning microscopy equipped with energy-dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The leaching concentration values of chromium and zinc were evaluated according to an alkaline digestion for the hexavalent chromium (US-EPA-3060A) and toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP, US-EPA-1311) method, respectively. It was found that all synthetic slags mainly contain α-Ca 2 SiO 4 , merwinite and spinel phase, in line with the calculation results by FactSage. The crystallization of spinel and merwinite phases was enhanced by the addition of ZnFe 2 O 4 but suppressed the precipitation of α-Ca 2 SiO 4 . It was revealed that the leaching concentration of chromium was depressed by adding ZnFe 2 O 4 and was far below the chemical limits defined in the French proposal for a criterion and evaluation methods for waste ecotoxicity (0.1 mg L −1 ). In addition, the zinc leaching concentration meets the sanitary landfill standard. The proposed synergistic treatment method was further validated on industrial stainless steel slags and EAF dusts. Experimental results indicated that the synergistic treatment method can immobilize chromium effectively and the final slags can be disposed of by sanitary landfilling or recycling as constructional materials. A schematic technologic route diagram of the synergistic treatment was also proposed.
An environmentally benign process for effective recovery and solidification of Cr from stainless-steel slag

Abstract:Stainless-steel slag is a hazardous solid that has caused severe chromium contamination globally. This study proposes an environmentally benign vitrification process for efficient recycling and solidification of Cr from stainless-steel slag using waste copper slag and coal tar residue. The transformation behaviors of heavy metals (Cr, Cu, Pb, Zn) and the Cr toxic leaching mechanism are also determined in this work. The findings indicated that compared with Cu and Fe phases, the Mg(Al,Cr) 2 O 4 and chemically dissolved Cr phases were not easily reduced via coal tar residue, leading to the leaching of highly toxic Cr 3+ /Cr 6+ during the toxicity characteristic leaching procedure (TCLP). Under optimal conditions, 95.56% Cr, 97.71% Fe, and 99.71% Cu could be recovered in the form of high value-added crude stainless-steel, and 99.62% Pb and 99.19% Zn could be enriched in the dust. The furnace slag TCLP result indicated that the leaching concentrations of Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn were 1.82 mg/L, 0.1 mg/L, 0.38 mg/L, and 2.58 mg/L, respectively. More importantly, the concentrations of residual Cr, Cu, Pb and Zn in the furnace slag were only 0.095 wt%, 0.028 wt%, 0.0192 wt%, and 0.011 wt%, respectively. These findings indicate that treated slag can be categorized as general solid waste, minimizing the environmental risks of heavy metals. The results of this study are significant for the sustainable development of the stainless-steel industry and copper metallurgy.

A novel process for comprehensive resource utilization of hazardous chromium sludge: Progressive recovery of Si, V, Fe and Cr

Abstract:Chromium sludge is a hazardous solid waste which cannot be effectively treated but only piled up and abandoned, causing serious environment pollution and resource wasting. This work proposes an effective novel process to separately recover all resources in chromium sludge via a sustainable way. The obtained acid solving liquid from chromium sludge is desiliconized by cationic flocculant (PCAM) to induce coprecipitation of polysilicate gel and PCAM, which mixture is calcinated to generate the product of white carbon black in purity of 94.35% with a recovery of 92.58%. After desiliconization, V in the solving liquid is selectively extracted by microemulsion (ME), which is recovered as V2O5 in purity of 99.34% with a recovery of 95.53% by the subsequent procedure of stripping-precipitation-calcination. The Fe3+ in raffinate is reduced to Fe2+ cations by Na2SO3, and is then recovered by H2C2O4 precipitation to generate the FeC2O4 product in purity of 99.12% with a recovery of 98.25%. Cr3+ cations in residual solution are recovered by alkaline precipitation and calcination to generate the Cr2O3 product in purity of 98.25% with a recovery of 92.68%. This work provides fresh penetrations into the synchronous detoxification, resource recovery and value-added utilization of hazardous industrial solid wastes.

Abstract:As a type of metallurgical solid waste with a significant output, chromium-containing metallurgical dust and slag are gaining increasing attention. They mainly include stainless steel dust, stainless steel slag, ferrochrome dust, and ferrochrome slag, which contain significant amounts of valuable elements, such as chromium, iron, and zinc, as well as large amounts of toxic substances, such as hexavalent chromium. Achieving the harmless and resourceful comprehensive utilization of chromium-containing metallurgical dust and slag is of great significance to ensuring environmental safety and the sustainable development of resources. This paper outlines the physicochemical properties of stainless steel dust, stainless steel slag, ferrochrome dust, and ferrochrome slag. The current treatment technologies of chromium-containing metallurgical dust and slag by hydrometallurgy, the pyrometallurgical process, and the stabilization/solidification process are introduced. Moreover, the comprehensive utilization of resources of chromium-containing metallurgical dust and slag in the preparation processes of construction materials, glass ceramics, and refractories is elaborated. The aim of this paper is to provide guidance for exploring effective technology to solve the problem of chromium-containing metallurgical dust and slag.

Abstract:Chromite ore processing residue (COPR) has been a severe environmental contaminant which is worthy of attention. In this study, we developed an eco-friendly and practical technology for effectively stabilizing and recovering Cr(VI) in COPR via combining FeSO4 reducing agent and the hydrothermal treatment. A stable spinel phase product was formed during detoxification. In addition, the ferrochrome resources in the treated COPR can be obtained by magnetic separation. As we studied, the hydrothermal environment promoted the release of unstable Na2CrO4 from COPR into the solution, and the released CrO42- was reduced to Cr(III) by FeSO4. Subsequently, Cr(III), Fe(II) and Fe(III) were hydrothermally mineralized to form the magnetic spinel phase Fe2+(Cr3+X, Fe3+2-x)O4 (FeCr spinel substance), which was conducive to the magnetic separation of ferrochrome resources. Under the optimal hydrothermal conditions (0.15 g FeSO4/2 g COPR, treatment at 180 °C for 8 h), the total Cr leaching concentration of treated COPR (COPR-HT) was decreased from 120.51 mg L-1 to 0.23 mg L-1, well below the regulatory limit of 1.5 mg L-1 (HJ/T 301-2007, China EPA). After 300 days aging under atmospheric conditions, the total Cr leaching concentration of COPR-HT was still below 1.5 mg L-1. Besides, the COPR-HT after magnetic separation contained 11.52 wt% Cr2O3 and 53.44 wt% Fe2O3, which can be used as the raw material for steel industry. The underlying mechanism of COPR stabilization was explained by XRD, XPS and SEM-EDS analysis. This work converted the toxic and unstable Cr(VI) in COPR into the long-term stable FeCr spinel substance that is easy to magnetically separate. It has important reference for the harmless disposal and resource utilization of other chromium-containing hazardous wastes including chromium slag and electroplating sludge.

Abstract:Chromite ore processing residue (COPR) is a typical hazardous waste, which contains Cr( VI ) and poses a great threat to the ecological environment and human health. In this study, solidification/stabilization (S/S) of COPR was carried out by using blast furnace slag (BFS) and fly ash (FA) to prepare alkali-activated cementitious materials (AACM). The influence of different factors (water glass modulus, liquid–solid ratio, alkali–solid content and curing temperature) on compressive strength was investigated by single-factor experiment. Additionally, solidification effect of AACM was determined according to the compressive strength and the leaching concentration of chromium (Cr( VI ) and total Cr). According to the optimal conditions of the single-factor experiment, the highest compressive strength of 147.6 MPa was obtained after using the water glass modulus 1.0, liquid–solid ratio 0.28, alkali–solid content 8%, curing temperature 45 °C. The COPR was solidified in the AACM sample having highest compressive strength. The solidified body still has a good mechanical property (38.2 MPa) with 60% addition COPR. According to leaching tests, the leaching of Cr( VI ) and total Cr of solidified body with 50% COPR was far lower than the limit value, which met the purpose of construction and landfill disposal. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis proved that heavy metal chromium was solidified in AACM by physical and chemical means.

Abstract:The harmless treatment and resource utilization of chromite ore processing residue (COPR), a consequential byproduct of chromate production, carry profound significance. In this study, corn stalk, an agricultural waste, was used to generate reducing substances through high-temperature and vacuum treatments and was successfully used to detoxify COPR. The acid leaching method combined with multi-step purification was employed to extract iron and aluminum, two crucial metallic elements, from COPR. The successful preparation of iron hydroxide and ultrafine aluminum hydroxide (ATH) was achieved. The prepared ATH has an average particle size of 8.124 μm, with a highly uniform distribution, enabling it to be a promising environmentally friendly inorganic flame retardant. This study not only effectively addresses the issue of pollution caused by COPR but also presents a novel approach to utilizing industrial and agricultural wastes, thereby promoting the maximization of resource utilization.

Abstract:Electroplating sludge is a hazardous waste and secondary metal resource because of its heavy metal content, which poses a huge threat to environmental safety if not properly disposed. An innovative process of oxidizing roasting followed by water leaching and smelting reduction to recover Cr, Cu, and Ni from electroplating sludge was proposed in this research, in which other two hazardous wastes of spent cathode carbon combustion dust and copper refining slag were co-treated. The NaF from spent cathode carbon combustion dust could convert Cr2O3 to Na2CrO4 using the oxidizing roasting process, resulting in a Cr recovery through the subsequent water leaching. The Na2CrO4 formation was promoted by CaO owing to it transferring the Cr spinel phase of FeCr2O4 [1+] to CaCrO4 and then to Na2CrO4. Under optimal conditions, the Cr recovery reached 97.1 %, and most ‘F’ was solidified into CaF2. In the next smelting reduction of the leaching residue, the Cu and Ni were recovered mainly in the form of Cu-Ni alloy. The addition of copper refining slag promoted their recovery, due to it modifying the molten slag and alloy structures and increasing the Cu-Ni alloy separation from molten slag. Some generated high-melting-point Cu-Ni-Fe and Ni-Fe alloys were converted to a Cu-Ni alloy with a low melting point in presence of Co from the copper refining slag, simultaneously with which the Fe was transferred out from Cu-Ni-Fe and Ni-Fe alloys and combined with Co to form a Fe-Co alloy. It increased Cu-Ni alloy droplets aggregation from molten slag and decreased their contents in the residual slag. Under optimized conditions, the Cu and Ni contents in the residual slag decreased to 0.37 and 0.06 wt%, respectively. Besides, the residual slag mainly composed of CaO, CaF2 and SiO2 could be used to prepare building materials rendering it harmless.

Abstract:Concentrating the chromium in chromium slag and improving the chromium–iron ratio is beneficial for the further utilization of chromium slag. In this paper, chromium slag obtained from a chromite lime-free roasting plant was used as the raw material. Pellets made of the chromium slag and pulverized coal were reduced at different pre-reduction temperatures and then separated by a melting separation process or magnetic separation process, respectively. The mass and composition of the metallized pellets before separation, along with the alloy and tail slag after separation, were comprehensively analyzed. The experimental results showed that the output yield of alloy, iron recovery rate, and chromium content in the alloy were all higher when using melting separation than when using magnetic separation, because of the further reduction during the melting stage. More importantly, a relatively low pre-reduction temperature and selection of magnetic separation process were found to be more beneficial for chromium enrichment in slag; the highest chromium–iron ratio in tail slag can reach 2.88.

Abstract:Chemical reduction combined with microbial stabilization is a green and efficient method for the remediation of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) contaminated soil. In this study, the combination of ferrous sulfate with kitchen waste digestate was applied to reduce and immobilize Cr(VI) in chromite ore processing residue (COPR) contaminated soils, and systematically evaluated the remediation performance of Cr(VI) compared with several typical reducing agents (i.e., ferrous sulfate, zero valent iron, sodium thiosulfate, ferrous sulfide, and calcium polysulfide). The results showed that the combination of ferrous sulfate and digestate had superior advantages of a lower dosage of reducing agent and a long-term remediation effect compared to other single chemical reductants. Under an Fe(II):Cr(VI) molar ratio of 3:1% and 4% digestate (wt), the content of Cr(VI) in the soil decreased to 5.07 mg/kg after 60 days of remediation. Meanwhile, the leaching concentrations of Cr(VI) were below detection limit, which can meet the hazardous waste toxicity leaching standard. The risk level of Cr pollution was decreased from very high risk to low risk. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) results further demonstrated that the combined treatments were beneficial to Cr(VI) reduction and stabilization. The abundance of bacteria with Cr(VI) reducing ability was higher than other treatments. Moreover, the high abundance of carbon and nitrogen metabolism in the combined treatments demonstrated that the addition of digestate was beneficial to the recovery and flourishing of Cr(VI)-reducing related microorganisms in COPR contaminated soils. This work provided an alternative way on Cr(VI) remediation in COPR contaminated soils.

Abstract:A novelty roasting method with manganese carbonate (MnCO3) as additive was carried out to separate and recover vanadium from high chromium vanadium slag (HCVS) efficiently. Vanadium tailings containing chromium was detoxified by carbon reduction and smelting to form Fe-Cr alloy. The whole process of HCVS utilization was analyzed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). 89.37% of vanadium and 0.10% of chromium was leached when MnCO3 was added to HCVS at the mole ratio of MnO in MnCO3 and V2O3 in HCVS (n(MnO)/n(V2O3)) of 2.0 and heating at 850 °C for 120 min, then leached under the pH value at 2.5. 99.19% of vanadium was precipitated by (NH4)2SO4 and V2O5 with a purity of 99.28% was prepared. More than 84% of manganese addictive was recovered after manganese precipitation by carbonization with CO2 discharged from manganese carbonate roasting, which could be used as the raw addictive for roasting. The wastewater after vanadium and manganese extraction could be circulated as leaching medium. Three circulation routes realized the closed-circuit circulation of raw materials and products, saving the production costs and avoiding the environmental pollution. Fe-Cr alloy with 67.35% of Fe and 13.28% of Cr was obtained from chromium-containing vanadium tailings, which could be returned to the steelmaking process.
Novel method for comprehensive utilization of MSWI fly ash through co-reduction with red mud to prepare crude alloy and cleaned slag

Abstract:Municipal solid waste incineration fly ash (MSWI-FA) is classified as hazardous waste that requires an effective processing method. This study proposed an innovative technique process, co-reduction of MSWI-FA and red mud followed by magnetic separation, to prepare crude alloy and cleaned slag. In this process, MSWI-FA acted not only as a reductant to reduce metal minerals in MSWI-FA and red mud to form an alloy, but also as a calcium additive to enhance the reduction of metal minerals and alter the melting point of the CaO-SiO2-Al2O3 system. Under optimal conditions, 85.52% Fe, 80.10% Cu, 92.96% Ni, and 66.74% Cr can be recovered in the form of a Fe-Cu-Ni-Cr alloy. The Fe-Cu-Ni-Cr alloy containing 96.47% Fe, 0.81% Cu, 0.65% Ni, and 0.42% Cr can be used for weathering steel production. Other heavy metals, including Cd, Pb, and Zn, were removed via volatilization. The toxicity characteristic leaching procedure test indicated that the leaching toxicity of the cleaned slag was substantially below the standard limits. The characteristics of the cleaned slag were similar to those of ground granulated blast furnace slag, suggesting its potential application in cement production.

Abstract:Chromium (Cr)-containing electroplating sludge is a hazardous solid waste and has a detrimental effect on human health and the environment. The existing mainstream methods still have problems such as high costs and complicated processes. In this study, the composition, phase composition, heavy metal content, microstructure, calcination characteristics, and vitrification of chromium electroplating sludge were analyzed by XRF, XRD, ICP-OES, and SEM. The results showed that calcination of sludge at 650 °C and 850 °C produces magnetic ferrite ZnFe 2 O 4 . When solidifying sludge with D245 glass, the maximum sludge addition is 35% in order to make the Cr(VI) leaching concentration meet the national standard. Here, the plastic solidification method was developed to solidify Cr-containing electroplating sludge and fill plastic building templates. This method is simple to operate, low cost, and a promising prospect. The effect of surface modification of electroplating sludge was discussed. The most obvious effect of the modification is sodium stearate, modified by sodium stearate powder oil absorption decreases value from 0.62 g/1.0 g to 0.40 g/1.0 g. When sodium stearate with 1.5% was used as the sludge surface modifier, the contact angle reached 88.98°. Then, the effect of the ratio of PVC to modification sludge on the performance of PVC building templates was investigated and compared with that of the templates prepared by calcium carbonate filling. It was found that the performance of the sludge-filled PVC template was superior to the traditional calcium-carbonate filled PVC template when the ratio of PVC to sludge is 100:150, and the tensile strength reached 15.3233 Mpa and 13.745 Mpa, respectively. Thus, this study demonstrates a new method to treat and recycle Cr-containing electroplating sludge.

Abstract:Untreated Cr(VI)-containing wastewater and long-term stockpiled copper slag flotation tailings (CSTs) cause massive irreversible soil and water pollution. The current study explored an environmentally friendly method for aqueous Cr(VI) remediation using CST, which was improved by reduction calcination with anthracite as the reductant. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier infrared (FTIR), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS) indicated that reduction calcination could promote the transformation of fayalite to zero-valent iron (Fe0), which is beneficial to enhance the reduction ability of CST for Cr(VI). The CST calcined with 20% anthracite at 1300 °C for 40 min had the best Cr(VI) remediation performance. Compared with raw CST without Cr(VI) remediation ability, anthracite-calcined CST (ACST) can achieve 100% Cr(VI) remediation efficiency. Moreover, ACST exhibited excellent removal capacity for As(III), Pb(II), and Cd(II). Multi-characterizations supported that the Fe0 in ACST provides electrons to promote the reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III), and then Cr(III) was deposited on the surface of Fe0 in the form of hydroxide precipitation. The remediation mechanism could be attributed to the joint contribution of reduction, precipitation, and coprecipitation. The present study provides new insights into the remediation of Cr(VI)-containing wastewater and the reuse of CST.

Stabilization of hexavalent chromium with pretreatment and high temperature sintering in highly contaminated soil

Abstract:This study explored the effectiveness and mechanisms of high temperature sintering following prereduction with ferric sulfate (FeSO4), sodium sulfide (Na2S), or citric acid (C6H8O7) in stabilizing hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) in highly contaminated soil. The soil samples had an initial total Cr leaching of 1768.83 mg/L, and Cr(VI) leaching of 1745.13 mg/L. When FeSO4 or C6H8O7 reduction was followed by sintering at 1000°C, the Cr leaching was reduced enough to meet the Safety Landfill Standards regarding general industrial solid waste. This combined treatment greatly improved the stabilization efficiency of chromium because the reduction of Cr(VI) into Cr(III) decreased the mobility of chromium and made it more easily encapsulated in minerals during sintering. SEM, XRD, TG-DSC, and speciation analysis indicated that when the sintering temperature reached 1000°C, almost all the chromium in soils that had the pre-reduction treatment was transformed into the residual form. At 1000°C, the soil melted and promoted the mineralization of Cr and the formation of new Cr-containing compounds, which significantly decreased subsequent leaching of chromium from the soil. However, without reduction treatment, chromium continued to leach from the soil even after being sintered at 1000°C, possibly because the soil did not fully fuse and because Cr(VI) does not bind with soil as easily as Cr(III).

Abstract:Steel metallurgical dust, characterized by a substantial output, minute particle size, and intricate composition, poses a considerable risk of environmental contamination while simultaneously embodying an exceptionally high potential for recycling. To achieve its resource utilization, chemical analysis, particle size analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Mössbauer spectroscopy, and water leaching methods were employed to investigate the chemical compositions, particle size distributions, phase compositions, and microscopic morphologies of blast furnace bag dust, sintering dust, converter fine dust, and electric arc furnace dust from steel plants. The results indicate that the four types of dust have extremely fine particle sizes, with the main distribution range of particle size being less than 100 μm. The main constituent element is Fe (19–56%), and it also contains Zn (1.4–33.5%), Pb, K, C, and other valuable elements. Alkali metals in blast furnace bag dust and sintering machine head dust existed mainly in the form of chloride. The zinc phases in sintering machine head dust and converter fine dust were ZnFe2O4, and the zinc phases in blast furnace bag dust were ZnCl2 and ZnFe2O4. Zinc in electric furnace dust was composed of ZnO and ZnFe2O4, accounting for 70.31% and 23.12%, respectively. There are significant differences in the types and contents of valuable elements among various dusts, making it difficult to achieve full-scale recovery through a single process. In view of this, a process of "in-plant recycling of harmless dusts—collaborative treatment of harmful dusts" has been proposed. Based on the characteristics of metallurgical dusts, multiple processes are used for collaborative treatment (using hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical methods), which can not only directly recover iron resources from dusts within the plant, but also avoid the waste of valuable elements such as Zn, Pb, K, Na, etc. It is hoped that the above work can provide a reference for steel enterprises to achieve full-scale and high value-added treatment of metallurgical dusts.

Abstract:Biochar derived from biomass is regarded as a promising adsorbent for wastewater treatment, but the high cost of modification is still a challenge for its large-scale practical applications. In this study, we employed steel slag as a low-cost fabricant and synthesized hydrothermally carbonized steel slag (HCSS), as a stable environmentally functional material for heavy metal removal. Typically, positively and negatively charged heavy metal contaminants of Hg 2+ and Cr 2 O 7 2− were employed to testify the performance of HCSS as an adsorbent, and good capacities [(283.24 mg/g for Hg (II) and 323.16 mg/g for Cr (VI)] were found. The feasibility of HCSS on real wastewater purification was also evaluated, as the removal efficiency was 94.11% and 88.65% for Hg (II) and Cr (VI), respectively. Mechanism studies revealed that the modification of steel slag on bio-adsorbents offered copious active sites for pollutants. As expected, oxygen-containing functional groups in HCSS acted as the main contributor to adsorption capacity. Moreover, some reactive iron species (i.e., Fe 2+ ) played an essential role in chemical reduction of Cr (VI). The adsorptive reactions were pH-dependent, owing to other more mechanisms, such as coprecipitation, ion-exchange, and electrostatic attraction. This promising recycling approach of biomass waste and the design of agro-industrial byproducts can be highly suggestive of the issues of resource recovery in the application of solid waste-derived environmentally functional materials for heavy metal remediation.

Abstract:Spent automotive catalyst (SAC) is an important secondary metal resource of platinum group metals (PGMs). However, the traditional smelting process for recovering valuable metals from SAC generally has the problems such as high reagents consumption and increased solid waste. Thus, a novel co-treatment process of SAC and copper-bearing electroplating sludge (CBES) was proposed in this study, where CBES was first used as the capture agent and fluxing material in the pyro-capture process of PGMs. The effects of separation behaviors of PGMs and copper under different smelting conditions were studied systematically. The optimum conditions for this process are as follows: m(CBES)/m(SAC) of 2.0, m(SiO 2 )/m(Al 2 O 3 ) of 3.00, basicity of 0.80, 5.0 wt% Na 2 B 4 O 7 , oxidative temperature of 1460 °C, oxidative time of 30 min, N C/Cu of 1.250, reductive temperature of 1300 °C, and reductive time of 90 min. Under these conditions, the sulfur removal rate exceeds 99% while the recoveries of Pt, Pd, Rh and Cu are 99.26%, 98.53%, 99.96% and 97.60%, respectively. The addition of pure reagents is only about 47% of the total waste mass. Furthermore, the capture process of Cu-Fe alloy for PGMs was discussed, which can consist of three steps: reduction of copper and iron, mutual migration and collision of the reduced metal atoms, and alloying. Finally, the produced slag was synthesized into non-hazardous glass-ceramics material successfully. To sum up, this study achieved the efficient recycling of two hazardous wastes simultaneously.
