Abstract:Ozone (O3) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) are critical atmospheric trace gases due to their role in air quality, oxidative chemistry, and climate forcing. Both O3 and NO2 were formerly monitored from space on a daily basis using sun-synchronous polar orbiting satellite instruments. However, the Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) now provides hourly measurements during the daylight hours over East Asia. Since GEMS is a newly launched satellite instrument, to check the accuracy and uncertainties associated with the first version of its dataset, there is a need for its evaluation through ground-based instruments over the Chinese region. This study presents the systematic evaluation of GEMS hourly measurements of Column Amount NO2 (NO2 VCDs) and Ozone Profile (O3P) by using ground-based measurements. The MAX-DOAS measurements were conducted in Xuzhou in eastern China for one week of each of the four seasons in 2021 to have a better representation of both high and low NO2 concentrations. NO2 variations were well captured in all seasons by both instruments, with higher VCDs in winter and lower during the summer.  A good correlation (R = 0.82) between MAX-DOAS and GEMS was found. However, GEMS underestimated the NO2 VCDs with a consolidated mean deviation (without seasonal discrimination) by -1.87 ± 8.73 x 1015 molec/cm2. The comparison of hourly GEMS NO2 VCDs with in-situ measurements available across China for 2021 has shown a good correlation coefficient of around 0.4-0.6 and higher, particularly in the highly polluted region of the North China Plain. Then, to evaluate the GEMS ozone profile, we used Ozonesonde measurements available for 2021 in Hong Kong, situated in the southern part of China. For the vertical profile of ozone in the troposphere and lower stratosphere, GEMS and Ozonsonde depicted a similar pattern. However, in the troposphere, the Ozonesonde measurements were slightly underestimated, while in the stratosphere, GEMS showed underestimation. It is pertinent to mention that both instruments depicted peak ozone concentrations at an altitude of around 24 to 27 km. The correlation between the two instruments was good, particularly in the lower troposphere (R = 0.74) at 4 km. Further, the lowest layer of the GEMS ozone profile was compared with in-situ measurements for 2021 across the entire Chinese region, and a good correlation coefficient (R: 0.4 - 0.6) was observed. These findings are meaningful scientific advancement enhancing our understanding of the potential of the first geostationary satellite instrument to monitor atmospheric trace gases (O3 and NO2) hourly. More robust validations are recommended in other regions to understand the uncertainties associated with the local conditions and to further improve the GEMS products in future versions of datasets.

Abstract:Currently, ozone pollution is one of the key environmental concerns, and to provide more effective strategies for ozone control, this paper proposes the use of the Geostationary Environmental Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) in conjunction with MAX-DOAS for observations and ozone sensitivity analysis. Compared to traditional polar-orbiting satellites, GEMS, launched by South Korea in 2019, offers superior spatiotemporal resolution. However, there is a lack of ground validation for GEMS data related to ozone and its precursors. In this study, we conducted validation in the Jing-Jin-Ji (Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei) region using two typical MAX-DOAS sites and the China National Environmental Monitoring Center (CNEMC) sites, confirming the accuracy of GEMS data. Analysis of the seasonal horizontal distribution results from GEMS and vertical distribution results from MAX-DOAS in 2022 reveals that the concentrations of NO 2 , HCHO, O 3 , and ozone sensitivity not only display seasonality and regional variations but also exhibit distinct characteristics at different altitudes and times, influenced by local climatic conditions, human activities, and topography. When formulating ozone control policies, it becomes imperative to consider factors such as time, regional characteristics, and seasonality. Comparisons between daily results from TROPOMI and GEMS indicate that polar-orbiting satellites may overlook high-pollution periods within a single day, and their measurements may not provide a comprehensive representation of an entire day's data. Consequently, relying solely on polar-orbiting satellite data for shaping ozone prevention and control policies may inadvertently encourage ozone formation during specific time periods, rendering these policies ineffective. Therefore, leveraging GEMS is essential for the development of comprehensive, around-the-clock ozone control policies. Finally, we used monitoring data from Beijing on October 6, 2022, to illustrate how the combination of GEMS and MAX-DOAS enables three-dimensional monitoring of pollutant transport processes on an hourly scale.

Abstract:Nitrogen oxide radicals (NOx≡NO+NO2) emitted by fuel combustion are important precursors of ozone and particulate matter pollution, and NO 2 itself is harmful to public health. The Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS), launched in space in 2020, now provides hourly daytime observations of NO 2 columns over East Asia. This diurnal variation offers unique information on the emission and chemistry of NO x , but it needs to be carefully interpreted. Here we investigate the drivers of the diurnal variation in NO 2 observed by GEMS during winter and summer over Beijing and Seoul. We place the GEMS observations in the context of ground-based column observations (Pandora instruments) and GEOS-Chem chemical transport model simulations. We find good agreement between the diurnal variations in NO 2 columns in GEMS, Pandora, and GEOS-Chem, and we use GEOS-Chem to interpret these variations. NO x emissions are 4 times higher in the daytime than at night, driving an accumulation of NO 2 over the course of the day, offset by losses from chemistry and transport (horizontal flux divergence). For the urban core, where the Pandora instruments are located, we find that NO 2 in winter increases throughout the day due to high daytime emissions and increasing NO2/NOx ratio from entrainment of ozone, partly balanced by loss from transport and with a negligible role of chemistry. In summer, by contrast, chemical loss combined with transport drives a minimum in the NO 2 column at 13:00–14:00 local time (LT). Segregation of the GEMS data by wind speed further demonstrates the effect of transport, with NO 2 in winter accumulating throughout the day at low winds but flat at high winds. The effect of transport can be minimized in summer by spatially averaging observations over the broader metropolitan scale, under which conditions the diurnal variation in NO 2 reflects a dynamic balance between emission and chemical loss.

Abstract:The Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) launched in February 2020 is now providing continuous daytime hourly observations of nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) columns over eastern Asia (5° S–45° N, 75–145° E) with 3.5 × 7.7 km 2 pixel resolution. These data provide unique information to improve understanding of the sources, chemistry, and transport of nitrogen oxides (NO x ) with implications for atmospheric chemistry and air quality, but opportunities for direct validation are very limited. Here we correct the operational level-2 (L2) NO 2 vertical column densities (VCDs) from GEMS with a machine learning (ML) model to match the much sparser but more mature observations from the low Earth orbit TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI), preserving the data density of GEMS but making them consistent with TROPOMI. We first reprocess the GEMS and TROPOMI operational L2 products to use common prior vertical NO 2 profiles (shape factors) from the GEOS-Chem chemical transport model. This removes a major inconsistency between the two satellite products and greatly improves their agreement with ground-based Pandora NO 2 VCD data in source regions. We then apply the ML model to correct the remaining differences, Δ (GEMS–TROPOMI), using the GEMS NO 2 VCDs and retrieval parameters as predictor variables. We train the ML model with colocated GEMS and TROPOMI NO 2 VCDs, taking advantage of TROPOMI off-track viewing to cover the wide range of effective zenith angles (EZAs) observed by GEMS. The two most important predictor variables for Δ (GEMS–TROPOMI) are GEMS NO 2 VCD and EZA. The corrected GEMS product is unbiased relative to TROPOMI and shows a diurnal variation over source regions more consistent with Pandora than the operational product.

Abstract:Abstract. Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is a major air pollutant. Tropospheric NO2 vertical column densities (VCDs) retrieved from sun-synchronous satellite instruments have provided abundant NO2 data for environmental studies, but such data are limited by insufficient temporal sampling (e.g., once a day). The Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) launched in February 2020 monitors NO2 at an unprecedented high temporal resolution. Here we present a research product for tropospheric NO2 VCDs, referred to as POMINO-GEMS. We develop a hybrid retrieval method combining GEMS and TROPOMI observations as well as GEOS-Chem simulations to generate hourly tropospheric NO2 slant column densities (SCDs). We then derive tropospheric NO2 air mass factors (AMFs) with explicit corrections for the anisotropy of surface reflectance and aerosol optical effects, through pixel-by-pixel radiative transfer calculations. Prerequisite cloud parameters are retrieved with the O2-O2 algorithm by using ancillary parameters consistent with those used in NO2 AMF calculations. Initial retrieval of POMINO-GEMS tropospheric NO2 VCDs for June–August 2021 reveals strong hotspot signals over megacities and distinctive diurnal variations over polluted and clean areas. POMINO-GEMS NO2 VCDs agree well with our POMINO-TROPOMI v1.2.2 product (R = 0.97, and NMB = 3.6 %) over Asia. Comparison with ground-based MAX-DOAS VCD data at nine sites shows a small bias of POMINO-GEMS (NMB = –15.7 %); however, the correlation for diurnal variation varies from -0.66 to 0.90, suggesting location-dependent performance. Surface NO2 concentrations estimated from POMINO-GEMS VCDs are consistent with measurements from the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China at 855 sites (NMB = –24.1 %, and R = 0.95 for diurnal correlation averaged over all sites). POMINO-GEMS data will be made freely available for users to study the spatiotemporal variations, sources and impacts of NO2.

Abstract:The major link between satellite-derived vertical column densities (VCDs) of nitrogen dioxide (NO 2 ) and ground-level concentrations is theoretically the NO 2 mixing height (NMH). Various meteorological parameters have been used as a proxy for NMH in existing studies. This study developed a nested XGBoost machine learning model to convert VCDs of NO 2 into ground-level NO 2 concentrations across China using Geostationary Environmental Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) measurements. This nested model was designed to directly incorporate NMH into the methodological framework to estimate satellite-derived ground-level NO 2 concentrations. The inner machine learning model predicted the NMH from meteorological parameters, which were then input into the main XGBoost machine learning model to predict the ground-level NO 2 concentrations from its VCDs. The inclusion of NMH significantly enhanced the accuracy of ground-level NO 2 concentration estimates; i.e., the R 2 values were improved from 0.73 to 0.93 in 10-fold cross-validation and from 0.88 to 0.99 in the fully trained model. Furthermore, NMH was identified as the second most important predictor variable, following the VCDs of NO 2 . Subsequently, the satellite-derived ground-level NO 2 data were analyzed across subregions with varying geographic locations and urbanization levels. Highly populated areas typically experienced peak NO 2 concentrations during the early morning rush hour, whereas areas categorized as lightly populated observed a slight increase in NO 2 levels 1 or 2 h later, likely due to regional pollutant dispersion from urban sources. This study underscores the importance of incorporating NMH in estimating ground-level NO 2 from satellite column measurements and highlights the significant advantages of geostationary satellites in providing detailed air pollution information at an hourly resolution.

Abstract:Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS), launched in 2020, provides both temporally and spatially continuous air quality data from geostationary Earth orbit (GEO). In this study, we analyzed seasonal characteristics of GEMS tropospheric NO 2 vertical column density (NO 2 TropVCD) diurnal patterns and impacts of a priori data from diverse chemical transport model (CTM) simulations over the Seoul Metropolitan Area (SMA), using the GEMS products retrieved by the IUP algorithm. We found that both the amounts of NO 2 TropVCD and the peak time vary according to the season – the maximum value occurs earlier in July (10 KST) compared to other months (12 KST), with relatively lower value (8.53 – 9.81 × 10 15 molec. cm -2 ). In wintertime, the decrease in NO 2 TropVCD over time was relatively slower than in summertime. Also, we examined the impact of changes in a priori data on the GEMS NO 2 TropVCD. When we compare GEMS NO 2 data retrieved with default NO x emissions and uniformly 20 %-reduced NO x emissions, there are no notable discrepancies as simulated NO 2 profiles from CTM are nearly identical over the SMA. However, when the vertical profile at 06:45 UTC (13:45 KST) was applied for retrievals at all times, there are 11.9 – 16.1 % lower values before 13:45 KST and up to 4.9 % higher values after 13:45 KST compared to the control run case. Our study highlighted two key findings: (1) GEMS NO 2 products describe distinct seasonal features, including the absolute values (highest in January and lowest in July) and diurnal patterns (persisting longer in January and declining rapidly in July), (2) changes of a priori data have the impacts of up to 19.2 % on the GEMS NO 2 TropVCD.

Abstract:Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) plays a critical role in terms of air quality, human health, ecosystems, and its impact on climate change. While the crucial roles of the vertical structure of NO2 have been acknowledged for some time, there is currently limited knowledge about this aspect in China. The Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) is the world's first geostationary satellite instrument capable of measuring the hourly columnar amount of NO2. The study presented here introduces the use of mixing height for NO2 in the atmosphere. A thorough examination of spatiotemporal variations in the mixing height of NO2 was conducted using data from both the GEMS and ground-based air quality monitoring networks. A random forest model based on machine learning techniques was utilized to examine how meteorological parameters affect the mixing height of NO2. The results of our study reveal a notable seasonal fluctuation in the mixing height of NO2, with the highest values observed during the summer and the lowest values during the winter. Additionally, there was an increasing diurnal trend from early morning to mid-afternoon. Moreover, the study discovered elevated NO2 mixing heights in the dry regions of northern China. The results also indicated a positive correlation between the mixing height of NO2 and temperature and wind speed, while negative associations were found with relative humidity and air pressure. The machine learning model's predicted NO2 mixing heights were in good agreement with the measurement-based outcomes, as evidenced by a coefficient of determination (R2) value of 0.96 (0.84 for the 10-fold cross-validation). These findings emphasize the noteworthy influence of meteorological variables on the vertical distribution of NO2 in the atmosphere and enhance our comprehension of the three-dimensional variations in NO2.
Estimating Nitrogen Oxides Emissions at City Scale in China with a Nightlight Remote Sensing Model

Abstract:Increasing nitrogen oxides (NOx) emissions over the fast developing regions have been of great concern due to their critical associations with the aggravated haze and climate change. However, little geographically specific data exists for estimating spatio-temporal trends of NOx emissions. In order to quantify the spatial and temporal variations of NOx emissions, a spatially explicit approach based on the continuous satellite observations of artificial nighttime stable lights (NSLs) from the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program/Operational Linescan System (DMSP/OLS) was developed to estimate NOx emissions from the largest emission source of fossil fuel combustion. The NSL based model was established with three types of data including satellite data of nighttime stable lights, geographical data of administrative boundaries, and provincial energy consumptions in China, where a significant growth of NOx emission has experienced during three policy stages corresponding to the 9th–11th Five-Year Plan (FYP, 1995–2010). The estimated national NOx emissions increased by 8.2% per year during the study period, and the total annual NOx emissions in China estimated by the NSL-based model were approximately 4.1%–13.8% higher than the previous estimates. The spatio-temporal variations of NOx emissions at city scale were then evaluated by the Moran's I indices. The global Moran's I indices for measuring spatial agglomerations of China's NOx emission increased by 50.7% during 1995–2010. Although the inland cities have shown larger contribution to the emission growth than the more developed coastal cities since 2005, the High–High clusters of NOx emission located in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei regions, the Yangtze River Delta, and the Pearl River Delta should still be the major focus of NOx mitigation. Our results indicate that the readily available DMSP/OLS nighttime stable lights based model could be an easily accessible and effective tool for achieving strategic decision making toward NOx reduction.
Tropospheric NO2 vertical profiles over South Korea and their relation to oxidant chemistry: implications for geostationary satellite retrievals and the observation of NO2 diurnal variation from space

Abstract:Nitrogen oxides (NO x ≡ NO + NO 2 ) are of central importance for air quality, climate forcing, and nitrogen deposition to ecosystems. The Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) is now providing hourly NO 2 satellite observations over East Asia, offering the first direct measurements of NO 2 diurnal variation from space to guide understanding of NO x emissions and chemistry. The NO 2 retrieval requires independent vertical profile information from a chemical transport model (CTM) to compute the air mass factor (AMF) that relates the NO 2 column measured along the line of sight to the NO 2 vertical column. Here, we use aircraft observations from the Korea-United States Air Quality (KORUS-AQ) campaign over the Seoul metropolitan area (SMA) and around the Korean Peninsula in May–June 2016 to better understand the factors controlling the NO 2 vertical profile, its diurnal variation, the implications for the AMFs, and the ability of the GEOS-Chem CTM to compute the NO 2 vertical profiles used for AMFs. Proper representation of oxidant chemistry is critical for the CTM simulation of NO 2 vertical profiles and is achieved in GEOS-Chem through new model developments, including aerosol nitrate photolysis, reduced uptake of hydroperoxy (HO 2 ) radicals by aerosols, and accounting for atmospheric oxidation of volatile chemical products (VCPs). We find that the tropospheric NO 2 columns measured from space in the SMA are mainly contributed by the planetary boundary layer (PBL) below 2 km altitude, reflecting the highly polluted conditions. Repeated measurements of NO 2 vertical profiles over the SMA at different times of day show that diurnal change in mixing depth affecting the NO 2 vertical profile induces a diurnal variation in AMFs of comparable magnitude to the diurnal variation in the NO 2 column. GEOS-Chem captures this diurnal variation in AMFs and more generally the variability in the AMFs for the KORUS-AQ NO 2 vertical profiles (2.7 % mean bias, 7.6 % precision), with some outliers in the morning due to errors in the timing of mixed-layer growth.

Capabilities of satellite Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) NO2 data for hourly ambient NO2 exposure modeling

Abstract:The Geostationary Environment Monitoring Spectrometer (GEMS) is the world's first geostationary instrument that monitors hourly gaseous air pollutant levels, including nitrogen dioxide (NO2). Using the first-of-its-kind capabilities of GEMS NO2 data, we examined how well GEMS NO2 levels can explain the spatiotemporal variabilities in hourly NO2 concentrations in the Republic of Korea for the year 2022. A correlation analysis between hourly GEMS NO2 levels and ground NO2 concentrations showed a higher spatial correlation [Pearson r = 0.56 (SD = 0.20)] than a temporal one [Pearson r = 0.42 (SD = 0.14)], on average. To take advantage of the enhanced spatial predictability of GEMS NO2 data, we employed a mixed effects model to allow hour-specific relationships between GEMS NO2 and NO2 concentrations on a given day in each region and subsequently estimated hourly NO2 concentrations in all urban and rural areas. The 10-fold cross validation demonstrated R2 = 0.72, mean absolute error (MAE) = 3.7 ppb, and root mean squared error (RMSE) = 5.5 ppb. The hourly variations of the relationships were attributed particularly to those of wind speed among meteorological parameters considered in this study. The spatial distributions of hourly estimated NO2 concentrations were highly correlated between hours [average r = 0.91 (SD = 0.06)]. Nonetheless, they represented the diurnal patterns of urban versus rural NO2 contrasts during the day [urban/rural NO2 ratios from 1.22 (5 p.m.) to 1.37 (12 p.m.)]. The newly retrieved GEMS NO2 data enable temporally as well as spatially resolved NO2 exposure assessment. In combination with the time-activity patterns of individual subjects, the GEMS NO2 data can generate 'sub-population' exposure estimates and therefore enhance health effect studies.

Abstract:The tropospheric vertical column density of NO2 (Trop NO2 VCD) can be obtained using satellite remote sensing, but it has been discovered that the Trop NO2 VCD is affected by uncertainties such as the cloud fraction, terrain reflectivity, and aerosol optical depth. A certain error occurs in terms of data inversion accuracy, necessitating additional ground observation verification. This study uses surface NO2 mass concentrations from the China National Environmental Monitoring Center (CNEMC) sites in Jiangsu Province, China in 2019 and the Trop NO2 VCD measured by MAX-DOAS, respectively, to verify the Trop NO2 VCD product (daily and monthly average data), that comes from the TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) and Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI). The results show that the spatial distributions of NO2 in TROPOMI and OMI exhibit a similar tendency and seasonality, showing the characteristics of being high in spring and winter and low in summer and autumn. On the whole, the concentration of NO2 in the south of Jiangsu Province is higher than that in the north. The Pearson correlation coefficient (r) between the monthly average TROPOMI VCD NO2 and the CNEMC NO2 mass concentration is 0.9, which is greater than the r (0.78) between OMI and CNEMC; the r (0.69) between TROPOMI and the MAX-DOAS VCD NO2 is greater than the r (0.59) between OMI and the MAX-DOAS. As such, the TROPOMI is better than the previous generation of OMI at representing the spatio-temporal distribution of NO2 in the regional scope. On the other hand, the uncertainties of the satellite products provided in this study can constrain regional air quality forecasting models and top-down emission inventory estimation.

Abstract:The Environmental Trace Gases Monitoring Instrument (EMI) is a high-spectral-resolution payload onboard the latest pathfinder mission GaoFen-5, designed specifically for the monitoring of global atmospheric trace gas compositions and trends. This study describes a comparative analysis of the tropospheric nitrogen dioxide (NO2) columns over the North China Plain (NCP) from November 2018 to April 2019 based on EMI products. Validation of satellite products based on a cross-correlation analysis with data from four ground-based multi-axis differential optical absorption spectroscopy sites provided good correlation coefficients (r) ranging from 0.78 to 0.88. The distribution and monthly averaged tropospheric NO2 columns revealed high pollution exposure levels during winter (November–January) and a decrease from February onward in the NCP. Moreover, a typical pollution event was analyzed in detail in combination with wind field statistics. The results indicated that variations of NO2 concentrations in Beijing and Tianjin were highly correlated with the wind direction from 22.5–45.0 degrees west of south, especially during times of high NO2 amounts. These findings highlight that the EMI payload on the GaoFen-5 (GF-5) satellite is useful for remote sensing of regional and global NO2 detection.

Abstract:Recently, Chinese cities have suffered severe events of haze air pollution, particularly in the North China Plain (NCP). Investigating the temporal and spatial distribution of pollutants, emissions, and pollution transport is necessary to better understand the effect of various sources on air quality. We report on mobile differential optical absorption spectroscopy (mobile DOAS) observations of precursors SO2 and NO2 vertical columns in the NCP in the summer of 2013 (from 11 June to 7 July) in this study. The different temporal and spatial distributions of SO2 and NO2 vertical column density (VCD) over this area are characterized under various wind fields. The results show that transport from the southern NCP strongly affects air quality in Beijing, and the transport route, particularly SO2 transport on the route of Shijiazhuang–Baoding–Beijing, is identified. In addition, the major contributors to SO2 along the route of Shijiazhuang–Baoding–Beijing are elevated sources compared to low area sources for the route of Dezhou–Cangzhou–Tianjin–Beijing; this is found using the interrelated analysis between in situ and mobile DOAS observations during the measurement periods. Furthermore, the discussions on hot spots near the city of JiNan show that average observed width of polluted air mass is 11.83 and 17.23 km associated with air mass diffusion, which is approximately 60 km away from emission sources based on geometrical estimation. Finally, a reasonable agreement exists between the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) and mobile DOAS observations, with a correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.65 for NO2 VCDs. Both datasets also have a similar spatial pattern. The fitted slope of 0.55 is significantly less than unity, which can reflect the contamination of local sources, and OMI observations are needed to improve the sensitivities to the near-surface emission sources through improvements of the retrieval algorithm or the resolution of satellites.

Spatiotemporal Mapping and Assessment of Daily Ground NO2 Concentrations in China Using High-Resolution TROPOMI Retrievals

Abstract:Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) is an important air pollutant that causes direct harms to the environment and human health. Ground NO2 mapping with high spatiotemporal resolution is critical for fine-scale air pollution and environmental health research. We thus developed a spatiotemporal regression kriging model to map daily high-resolution (3-km) ground NO2 concentrations in China using the Tropospheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) satellite retrievals and geographical covariates. This model combined geographically and temporally weighted regression with spatiotemporal kriging and achieved robust prediction performance with sample-based and site-based cross-validation R2 values of 0.84 and 0.79. The annual mean and standard deviation of ground NO2 concentrations from June 1, 2018 to May 31, 2019 were predicted to be 15.05 ± 7.82 μg/m3, with that in 0.6% of China's area (10% of the population) exceeding the annual air quality standard (40 μg/m3). The ground NO2 concentrations during the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) period (January and February in 2020) was 14% lower than that during the same period in 2019 and the mean population exposure to ground NO2 was reduced by 25%. This study was the first to use TROPOMI retrievals to map fine-scale daily ground NO2 concentrations across all of China. This was also an early application to use the satellite-estimated ground NO2 data to quantify the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the air pollution and population exposures. These newly satellite-derived ground NO2 data with high spatiotemporal resolution have value in advancing environmental and health research in China.
Ground-level NO2 Concentration Estimation Based on OMI Tropospheric NO2 and Its Spatiotemporal Characteristics in Typical Regions of China

Abstract:Although the ground-level NO2 measurement from air quality monitoring sites is relatively accurate, it is a challenge to obtain continuous spatial coverage due to the discrete distribution of sites. Thus, the tropospheric column NO2 amount from satellites with wide spatial and temporal coverage and higher resolution has been increasingly used to estimate ground-level NO2. However, most estimation methods were performed spontaneously using a simple linear model throughout the study period. These simplified models improve the efficiency of model development and enhance the generality of the model application, but they ignore the fact that contributors to changes of ground-level NO2 are not always consistent with time. This study considered the fixed and random effects of influencing factors and developed a mixed effect model (MEM) to estimate the ground-level NO2. By using the data of tropospheric NO2 in China from January 1, 2014 to June 30, 2020 and other multivariate auxiliary data such as meteorological elements and terrain elevation, the reliability of daily ground-level NO2 in typical populated areas of China estimated by the MEM was evaluated. The average of monthly R2 of 10fold CV in each study area during 2014-2020 is greater than 0.60 and the proportion of R2 greater than 0.7 is about 71%, suggesting the reliability of MEM. It is found that the ground-level NO2 distribution characteristics of each study area are more distinct, and the influential factors are also different. In addition, associated with the air quality control policies and emission reduction measures in various regions, the ground-level NO2 in each study area has shown an overall downward trend during 2014-2019. The uncertainty of daily-scale meteorological elements and boundary layer conditions can lead to varying degrees of deviations in daily-scale predictions of ground-level NO2. Validation with the station NO2 observations demonstrates that the ground-level NO2 prediction at seasonal time scale (R2 = 0.81, RMSE = 3.86 mu g/m3) performs better than those at time scales of daily and monthly (R2 = 0.65, and 0.75, RMSE = 7.92, and 6.24 mu g/m3). Therefore, the method of averaging can be used to improve the accuracy of ground-level NO2 predictions on individual dates. In summary, this study shows that MEM is a promising ground-level NO2 modeling method, and is effective for air pollution mapping in a large geographic region.
Preliminary validation of high-detailed GSA/Resurs-P tropospheric NO2 maps with alternative satellite measurements and transport simulations

Abstract:An experiment for the retrieval of the high-detailed spatial NO2 distribution in the troposphere using measurements of the GSA instrument onboard the Resurs-P satellite was performed in 2016. The authors developed an algorithm to obtain the tropospheric NO2 2D distribution with the horizontal spatial resolution reaching 2,4 km for the first time at the world level and provided on a grid with a step of 120 m. The high spatial resolution of the NO2 space measurements for the first time allowed the identification of local sources of NO2 pollution and their plumes. The paper presents preliminary results of validation of the GSA high-detailed NO2 field obtained on September 29, 2016 for Hebei province, the North China Plain, which is the most NO2 polluted area in the world. To validate the coarse structures in the obtained NO2 field we performed comparisons with OMI NO2 observations having the resolution of 13 km x 24 km. The comparison confirmed the reliability of the GSA NO2 fields in general. For the validation of fine structures detected in the NO2 fields of GSA/Resurs-P, we are developing methods based on comparisons with chemical transport models. The paper presents preliminary comparison of the Resurs-P tropospheric NO2 field with simulation based on HYSPLIT dispersion model. For the solution of the problem, a high-detailed chemical transport model is under the development.
Preliminary Global NO2 Retrieval from EMI-II Onboard GF5B/DQ1 and Comparison to TROPOMI

Abstract:The Environmental Trace Gases Monitoring Instrument (EMI-II) onboard the Chinese GaoFen-5B (GF5B) and DaQi-1 (DQ1) satellites is the successor of the previous EMI onboard the Chinese GaoFen-5 (GF5) satellite, and has a higher spatial resolution and a better signal-to-noise ratio. The GF5B and DQ1 were launched in September 2021 and April 2022, respectively. As part of China's ultraviolet-visible hyperspectral satellite instrument series, the EMI-II aims to conduct network observations of pollution gases globally in the morning and early afternoon. In this study, NO2 data were retrieved from the EMI-II payloads on the GF5B and DQ1 satellites using the Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) algorithm. The two satellites were consistently compared, and the results showed strong consistency on various spatial and temporal scales (R2 > 0.8). In four representative regions worldwide, NO2 data from the EMI-II exhibited good spatial consistency with those from the TROPOMI. The correlation coefficient (R2) of the total vertical column density (VCD) between the EMI-II and TROPOMI exceeded 0.85, and that of the tropospheric NO2 VCD exceeded 0.57. Compared with single-satellite observations, the dual-satellite network of the GF5B and DQ1 can effectively increase the observation frequency. On a daily scale, dual-satellite observations can reduce the impact of cloud coverage by 6–8% compared to single-satellite observations, and there are two valid observations of nearly 50% of the world's regions. Additionally, the differences between the two satellites can reflect the NO2 diurnal variations, which demonstrates the potential for studying pollutant gas diurnal variations.
