Abstract:Introduction: Damming significantly modifies the function of natural river networks and influences sediment dynamics with a reservoir’s operation. The dissolved organic matter (DOM) in reservoir sediments severely affects carbon flow from land to sea. However, the properties of DOM (e.g., quantity and quality) in reservoir sediments and their relationship with carbon cycling remain unclear as complex reservoir construction interrupts the environmental processes.Methods: This study characterizes the optical and molecular properties of sediment water-extractable organic matter (WEOM) in the Daning and Shennong tributaries of the world’s largest reservoir—the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR)—by applying optical techniques and ultrahigh-resolution Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS).Results and Discussion: We first assessed the link between light-absorbing components and the individual molecules in WEOM, which were significantly different than DOM in water and indicated that there might be an intrinsic variation between DOM in sediment and in water. Then, with the unique optical–molecular property linkage assessed, multiple sources (autochthonous and terrestrial) were identified, and a declining trend of terrestrial and recalcitrant WEOM was revealed from the tributaries upstream to downstream. Finally, through covariance analysis of the properties between WEOM and sediment particles, we demonstrated that the WEOM dynamic was most likely regulated by hydrologic sorting-induced particle size and mineral composition variations of sediment. Moreover, assessment between lability and WEOM molecular properties suggested that the WEOM dynamic likely contributes to carbon burial in the reservoir. This study emphasizes the influence of dam construction on organic matter accumulation and riverine carbon cycling.

Abstract:With the on-going boom in the construction of dam reservoirs all over the world, the sources and composition of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in fluvial networks are expected to be altered. Considering the importance of DOM as a key biogeochemical component in inland waters, this might bring important ecological and environmental influences. However, limited information is available on the molecular composition of DOM in dam reservoirs. In this study, the spatial characteristics of DOM composition were investigated in Xiangxi tributary and mainstream of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR), the largest freshwater reservoir in the world. The concentration alteration of conservative cations revealed the water intrusion from mainstream into Xiangxi tributary, which mainly controlled the hydrological gradient. One tyrosine-like (C4), one tryptophan-like (C2), and two humic-like (C1 and C3) fluorescent components were identified in fluorescent DOM (FDOM) by parallel factor analysis (PAFACAC), potentially indicating algal, anthropogenic, and terrestrial inputs, respectively. Decreasing trends of C1, C3 and C4 components and an increasing trend of C2 component were observed from Xiangxi tributary to mainstream, indicating higher terrestrial and algal inputs but lower anthropogenic inputs in Xiangxi tributary compared to mainstream. The Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) characterization further revealed substantial heterogeneity of DOM at the molecular level. Interestingly, S-containing compounds related to synthetic surfactants were consistently detected, and their relative abundances showed an increasing trend from Xiangxi tributary to mainstream, in agreement with the distribution of the anthropogenic derived C2 component. Meanwhile, numerous lignin-like S-containing compounds were identified, likely the result of the incorporation of sulfide ions to lignin-like CHO compounds. This study represents the first molecular level characterization of DOM in the TGR system, which should aid the design and implementation of more detailed future studies.

Abstract:Coastal bays bear anthropogenic influence strongly, and thus dissolved organic matter (DOM) in coastal bays, which is an important component of global carbon cycling, could be heavily affected by anthropogenic inputs. Utilizing absorbance, fluorescence spectroscopy, and stable carbon isotope (delta C-13), this study analyzed the characteristics and distribution of DOM in three coastal bays (Jiaozhou Bay, Sishili Bay, and Taozi Bay), located in North China. The results showed that there was always a high concentration of DOM near the river mouth in all three bays and the DOM concentration decreased along the salinity gradient in Jiaozhou Bay, indicating the riverine inputs are the main factor that causes the variation of DOM in these coastal bays. The effects of inflowing rivers on DOM in coastal bays differed with their watershed characteristics (i.e., agricultural/urban). In addition, humic-like DOM components were found to be positively correlated with the apparent oxygen utilization, suggesting microbial activities could contribute to the DOM in this region. There was generally a higher averaged concentration of fluorescent DOM in surface water than that in bottom water in Jiaozhou Bay. In contrast, higher humic-like DOM was found in bottom water than that in surface water in Sishili Bay and Taozi Bay, which could be attributed to aquaculture activities and biological production. Moreover, photodegradation/photobleaching, dumping, and sewage discharge had their effects on DOM in coastal bays. This study demonstrates that DOM in coastal bays is regulated by multiple sources (rivers, aquaculture, dumping, and sewage) and processes (biological production and photodegradation), and anthropogenic activities have their influences on optical and isotopic characteristics of DOM in coastal bays.

Abstract:As one of the most dynamic and reactive compound pools, DOM plays a crucial part in various biochemical processes such as element cycling and nutrient export. Although the reservoir DOM has been investigated extensively, the variation of DOM between reservoir area and non-reservoir area induced by reservoir construction is not comprehensively assessed. By the combination of a series of complementary techniques including stable carbon isotope, optical spectroscopy, and ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry, here we show that hydrological alterations induced by Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) construction were responsible for the variation in DOM molecular composition between reservoir area and non-reservoir area in Xiangxi tributary. With water intrusion from mainstream induced by reservoir construction and operation, reservoir area had relatively higher terrestrial input and more recalcitrant DOM than those in the non-reservoir area with limited influence of reservoir operation, whereas, relatively more autochthonous source and higher molecular lability of DOM were observed in the non-reservoir area. The water intrusion from mainstream to tributaries induced by reservoir construction is likely the main factor controlling DOM variation between reservoir area and non-reservoir area, and might devote to the organic carbon burial in the reservoir. This research provides new insight into spatial variations of riverine DOM composition induced by reservoir construction, underlining the important role of the reservoir in DOM cycling.

Abstract:The increasing number of dams and reservoirs affects the delivery of fluvial particulate organic carbon (POC) to the sea due to their trapping effect. Here, we study the POC characteristics of the Changjiang River over three periods to explore the impact of reservoirs on POC sources and flux. We found that the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) significantly raised the proportion of riverine primary productivity (RPP)-derived POC downstream, while cascade reservoirs improved the RPP upstream. Since the beginning of TGR impoundment, POC flux into the sea has decreased, whereas the proportion of RPP-derived POC into the sea has gradually increased. Our results demonstrate that the TGR and cascade reservoirs changed organic carbon sources and improved the labile composition in the Changjiang River, which may adversely impact carbon storage. These findings could be applicable to other rivers affected by dams worldwide.

Abstract:Reservoirs have boomed for clean energy in recent decades and interrupted the natural river ecosystem severely. Riverine dissolved organic matter (DOM), which regulates aquatic food web dynamics, water quality, and carbon storage, has been significantly impacted by reservoir construction. However, the vertical evolution of DOM properties and its controlling mechanisms in large reservoirs with hydrological management are not well investigated, limiting the understanding of carbon cycling (e.g., CO2 emissions and carbon burial) in reservoirs. To fill this knowledge gap, multiple complementary techniques including optical spectroscopy and ultrahigh-resolution Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry were applied to track composition and property changes of DOM along the vertical profile in a large deep tributary of the world largest Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) during the water-level rising period. The results indicated that middle and bottom water have relatively more terrestrial input and recalcitrant DOM, while surface water has relatively more autochthonous input and labile DOM. Integrated with the comprehensive analysis of DOM chemistry in a high-resolution vertical profile, the primary production and photodegradation in surface water, the density currents induced water intrusion from mainstream to tributaries, in middle water, and the biodegradation in bottom water are main factors controlling the vertical heterogeneity of reservoir DOM during the water-level rising period. This vertical increase of DOM recalcitrance likely contributes to the enhancement of organic carbon burial in TGR during the water-level rising period. All in all, this study provides new insight into the vertical variations of riverine DOM induced by reservoir construction, and emphasizes the important role of reservoir construction in carbon sequestration.

Abstract:Anthropogenic and hydrological drivers are key factors influencing the fate of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and dissolved organic phosphorus (DOP) in river runoff. However, how anthropogenic disturbances and hydrological conditions jointly affect the composition and characteristics of DOM and DOP in river runoff remains unclear. This study used fluorescence spectroscopy, Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry, and the stable water isotopes to interpret the chemical composition and properties of DOM and DOP as well as their linkages to anthropogenic disturbances and hydrological conditions in a typical P-contaminated tributary to the central Yangtze River. The results show in the wet season, the average abundance of humic-like components in DOM exceeded 60 %, while the average abundance of tryptophan-like components in DOM exceeded 50 % in the dry season. During the dry season, hydrological conditions had a greater impact on highly unsaturated DOM compounds compared to anthropogenic disturbances because a decrease in precipitation reduced the transport of terrestrial DOM into aquatic systems and increased water retention time in the river, promoting the production of unsaturated compounds from photochemistry. The effects of the two factors were similar in the wet season because active agricultural activities and intense precipitation jointly facilitated the entry of exogenous humics into the runoff, leading to the similar relative abundance of highly unsaturated DOM compounds associated with both factors. Anthropogenic disturbances had a greater impact on aliphatic DOM and DOP than hydrological conditions, which was associated with intense human activities in the watershed, such as phosphate mining, agricultural cultivation, and domestic sewage discharge. This study provides new knowledge about the composition, properties and underlying mechanisms of DOM and DOP in the P-contaminated watershed runoff.

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) chemistry in rivers regulates aquatic food web dynamics, water quality, and carbon storage. The operation of reservoirs represents one of the major human modifications on the natural flow of rivers, which can affect DOM chemistry. Although hydrologic heterogeneity has been observed in different segments of the reservoir, whether it will structure DOM chemistry is poorly assessed, which is critical to better constrain the carbon cycle in reservoirs. By the combination of a series of techniques including stable carbon isotopes, optical spectroscopy, and ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry, here we showed that hydrologic heterogeneity induced changes in DOM molecular composition between two large tributaries, named Shennongxi (SR) and Xiangxi (XR) rivers, of the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR). With water intrusion from mainstream, SR had relatively higher terrestrial and more recalcitrant DOM than XR, where no water intrusion from the mainstream was observed. In contrast, the averaged relative abundance of autochthonous input and biological lability of DOM along upstream to downstream transect were higher in XR than that in SR. The presence or absence of water intrusion from mainstream to tributaries induced by hydrologic management is likely the main factor controlling DOM chemistry in different tributaries of the TGR. By linking DOM chemistry in the water column with that in surface sediments, we suggest that hydrologic management of reservoir likely affects the preferential preservation of recalcitrant DOM in surface sediments, which further affects the organic carbon burial and the river carbon cycle. With reservoir construction increasing worldwide, further studies are encouraged to investigate the DOM chemistry under different hydrologic management of reservoirs to better constrain and predict the carbon cycling in fluvial ecosystems.

Abstract:With the linkage between dissolved organic matter (DOM) and the characteristics of natural ecosystem assessed extensively, the properties of DOM in reservoirs, the typical human interrupted ecosystems, have been focused on in recent years, which is critical for the understanding of human impacts on watershed ecosystems and carbon cycling. This study aims to analyze the effect of hydrological management on the DOM chemistry and organic carbon burial in Daning River tributary of the world's largest Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR). Based on the application of a combined approach including bulk geochemical analyses, optical spectroscopy, and ultrahigh-resolution Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry, various sources of DOM (terrestrial, anthropogenic, and autochthonous sources) were revealed. An increasing trend of terrestrial and recalcitrant DOM was observed along the upstream to downstream transect of Daning River tributary, which was mainly caused by the water intrusion with a higher terrestrial and recalcitrant signature from mainstream to tributary resulted from hydrological management of TGR. Integrated with the analysis of sedimentary organic matter in Daning River tributary in the past decade (after the construction of TGR), our work suggests that organic carbon burial in the reservoir could be enhanced by hydrological management-induced variation in DOM chemistry. Further studies are needed to better constrain the effects of damming reservoirs on carbon cycling considering their booming all over the world.

Abstract:This paper demonstrates how suspended sediment trapped by dam construction may impact the quantity of dissolved organic matter (DOM) exported discharge entering the Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR). Suspended sediment and water samples were collected along the upper Yangtze River and its major tributaries, and their water and sediment properties determined. The results provided evidence of the more organic polluted nature of the tributaries compared to the upper mainstream Yangtze River. However, the measured DOM concentration in the waters within the TGR downstream from the tributary confluence, was 14% — 25% lower than that estimated just from mixing runoff. In contrast, the measured contents of particulate organic matter (POM) along the main Yangtze River increased by around 20%, whilst the partitioning coefficient of organic matter between sediment and water peaked 2.99 × 103. The results indicated that the sediment from the upper Yangtze River possibly absorbed the DOM sourced from the tributaries with the organic contamination. The annual DOM load which equals the average concentration of DOM multiplied by exported runoff, entering the TGR has been predicted to increase by 15% — 23% during the operation period of an another dam named after Xiluodu constructed upstream from the TGR.

Abstract:Longitudinal patterns of dissolved organic matter (DOM) influence the biogeochemical cycle in river ecosystems. Yet, linkages between DOM quality and bacterial degradation of emerging contaminants over a river continuum are unclear. In combination with DOM characterization, bioassay, and microbial analysis, this study unraveled the spatial variations of DOM composition and biodegradability as well as bacterial community structures, which determined the estrone biodegradation potential (EBP) along the mainstream in Three Gorges Reservoir during impoundment period. While urban and agricultural utilization increased the protein-like and biodegradable DOM components (BDOC%) in upstream, the in-situ biotransformation preferentially utilized tryptophan-like substances followed by tyrosine-like substances, resulting in the accumulated recalcitrant DOM with higher aromaticity, molecular weight, and humic-like components in downstream. Due to the promotion of biodegradable DOM on bacterial abundances, a significant and positive correlation was constructed between BDOC% and EBP ( P < 0.001, R 2 = 0.56), both of which were controlled by the ratio of fresh- to humic-like fluorescence. Nevertheless, a higher biomass-normalized EBP was found under recalcitrant conditions in downstream, demonstrating that the degradation function was also associated with the biogeographical distribution of bacterial communities. Results of microbial ecology revealed that the in-situ transformation of aromatic and humic-like DOM exhibited more correlations with bacterial taxa than protein-like DOM, leading to increased diversity and decreased niche breadths along the mainstream. The triggered deterministic selection of community assemblages in downstream favored potential estrone-degraders and up-regulated their specific metabolic capacity. These findings will provide critical insights toward understanding the crucial role of DOM in biogeochemical cycles and the self-purification of emerging contaminants along the river continuum.

Abstract:Reservoirs are well known as a far-reaching human modification on the functions of natural river networks. However, changes in the chemistry and reactivity of dissolved organic matter (DOM) responding to hydrological management for water retention structures, and its influence on the river carbon cycle, remain poorly understood. Here we show that hydrological management does shape the molecular composition of DOM in the world's largest Three Gorges Reservoir, as revealed by optical spectroscopy and ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry. Relatively higher terrestrial input, molecular complexity, isomeric complexity, and environmental stability of DOM were observed during the storage period, whereas the inverse occurred during the drainage period. The results demonstrate that the hydrodynamic processes, which are mainly controlled by water intrusion from mainstream to tributaries, are likely the underlying mechanism controlling DOM chemistry. Integrated with observations from worldwide river reservoirs, the DOM degradation experiments suggest that reservoir hydrological management would enhance DOM mineralization, thereby increase CO2 emission and change the river carbon cycle.

Abstract:Water level fluctuation and modification in human activities induced by dam construction have significantly affected the production and input of nutrients in the tributary watersheds. In this study, numerical simulation and time series analysis methods are used to explore the input of phosphorus (P) in different types of tributary watersheds around the reservoirs in river reservoir systems and the impact of dam construction on reservoir water quality. Watersheds within a reservoir were divided into larger and smaller tributary watersheds according to whether their area was greater than or less than 1000 km2. The results showed that smaller tributary watersheds, which account for 29% of the area of the Three Gorges Reservoir Region (TGRR), transported approximately 36%~45% of P and 43.7%~47.8% of sediment deposited into the mainstream from 2003 to 2017. P from the smaller tributary watersheds of the reservoir had a stronger influence on the aquatic environment of the river-reservoir system than that from the larger tributary watersheds. In addition, the annual mean contributions of the P inputs from the “three rivers” (the Yangtze River, the Jialingjiang River and the Wujiang River) and tributary watersheds within the reservoir were 68.76% and 31.18% from 2003 to 2017, respectively. The dam altered the composition of the form of P in the river-reservoir system, and the waterbody close to the dam was identified as the main area containing dissolved P (DP) enrichment. Accordingly, the risk of eutrophication remains high in head area of the dam due to the relatively high and stable P concentration. This study provides critical information for the management of nutrients in a river-reservoir system and the prevention of eutrophication of water bodies.

Abstract:The coupling between constructed wetlands and reservoir (CWs-R) afforded a novel ecosystem to improve the water quality and increase the emergency storage capacity of micro-polluted river drinking water source. In this study, spectroscopic characteristics of DOM in YL CWs-R ecosystem were first systematic studied based on a three-year field monitoring to investigate the chemical composition, sources and track the involved biogeochemical processes in the ecosystem. Three humic-like components (C1, C2, and C4, em >380 nm) and one protein-like component (C3, em < 380 nm) were identified by PARAFAC model. Significant spatiotemporal variations in concentration and composition of FDOM were observed in YL CWs-R ecosystem. The improved water transparency (SD) and, the increased hydraulic retention time (HRT) along YL CWs-R ecosystem enhance photochemical processes, leading to significant decreases in the intensities of humic-like components in effluent (P < 0.05) with lower degrees of aromaticity, molecular weights, and humification (decrease in HIX and increases in SR and BIX). In contrast, no significant spatial difference was observed for protein-like component (P > 0.05), which implies that the biodegradation and production of protein-like component may balance each other in the CWs-R ecosystem. The ecological pond unit plays a major role in the removal and transformation of DOM, especially in summer, while wetland purification unit contributes little to DOM reduction. In addition, the decay of aquatic macrophytes in wetland purification unit and the risk of algal bloom in the ecological pond unit might become important autochthonous sources of DOM, especially in summer and autumn. These findings are critical for further understanding the transformation processes of DOM in large-scale CWs-R ecosystems, and could provide important implications to improve sustainable safety of drinking water sources.

[Optical Composition and Potential Driving Factors of Chromophoric Dissolved Organic Matter in Large Lakes and Reservoirs in the Eastern Region of China].

Abstract:Intensified urbanization has been occurring in the eastern region of China in recent decades, and excessive industrial and household sewage has been discharged into lakes and reservoirs, which has directly lowered water quality and destructed the functions of aquatic ecosystems. Lakes and reservoirs are typically drinking water sources supplying water for metropolitan areas as well as large- and medium-sized cities. Chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM) is the colored fraction of DOM, and its source and optical composition strongly affect water supply safety and the health of surrounding citizens. In April 2021, we collected 68 samples from Reservoir Changtan (n=11), Lake Taihu (n=25), Lake Hongze (n=18), and Lake Gaoyou (n=14), and we further carried out 28 days of laboratory bio-incubation, together with optical measurements and parallel factor analysis (EEMs-PARAFAC) to analyze the bio-degradability ω(BDOC), sources, and optical composition of CDOM in these waters. The results showed that after 28 days of laboratory bio-incubation, the bioavailability of dissolved organic carbon (BDOC) of the four lakes and reservoirs were all higher than 50%. PARAFAC results showed that CDOM collected from the four lakes was composed of four fluorescent components, including a terrestrial humic-like C1, a tryptophan-like C2, and tyrosine-like C3 and C4. Protein-like components (C2, C3, and C4) contributed importantly to the CDOM pool in the four waterbodies, and in Lake Hongze the contribution of C2-C4 was as high as (90.0±2.2)%. In Lake Hongze, total phosphorus (TP) correlated closely with C1-C3, indicating that those components can be used to trace the variability of TP. Among the four waterbodies, a254 was positively correlated with DOC (R2=0.96, P<0.01), indicating that a254 can be used to estimate the dynamics of DOC in these waters. In Lake Taihu, we found a low level of humification index (HIX) and a high level of biological index (BIX), indicating that autochthonous substances contributed importantly to the CDOM pool in this lake. In comparison, allochthonous sources contributed importantly to the CDOM pool in the remaining three waters. The enhanced monitoring of the discharge of industrial and agricultural effluents in the upstream watersheds of the four waters can help to protect the water quality and maintain healthy aquatic ecosystems.

Abstract:Dissolved oxygen (DO) has a significant impact on aquatic ecological environment and the living conditions of fishes. Water quality, especially water temperature, reservoir discharge pattern and climatic conditions are believed to influence the changes in DO levels. A case study was carried out, considering all of the 3 conditions in the upstream of RURY (standing for National Nature Reserve for the Rare and Endemic Fishes in the Upper Reaches of the Yangtze River), which was established to protect the rare fish species in the Yangtze River. The study sites are in the downstream of the Xiangjiaba (XYB) and Xiluodu (XLD) reservoirs, which have been constructed and used for the initial impoundment. The objective of this research was to investigate the effects of abiotic conditions on the DO levels in the downstream reaches of the XJB and XLD reservoirs, and accordingly, to provide guidance on reservoirs' operations strategies to control the DO levels and maintain a relatively healthy aquatic ecological environment for the rare and endemic fishes there. Data of DO concentration, water temperature, pH levels, as well as 14 meteorological parameters and 7 hydrological parameters are considered in statistical modeling. The analysis was conducted via the analysis of the changes of DO levels and stepwise multiple linear regression analysis. The results indicate that (1) DO concentration and saturation in all monitoring stations significantly increased after initial impoundment; (2) the super-saturation of DO occurred downstream of the XLD and XJB reservoirs after each impoundment; (3) DO concentration and saturation downstream of the XJB reservoir were significantly affected by water-discharging patterns, atmosphere pressure (particularly its maximum value) and pH levels, whereas DO concentration and saturation downstream of the XLD reservoir were more related to atmospheric parameters, such as atmospheric temperature and wind speed.

Abstract:Dissolved organic matter (DOM) is an important component in aquatic systems. There has been much debate about the potential effects of cascade reservoirs on the transport and transformation of DOM. Here, through a survey of source to leave-boundary section of Lancang River (LCR) in June and November of 2017–2018, our results revealed that weak spatiotemporal variations were observed for DOC content, whereas DOM parameters were significantly different between natural and reservoir reaches. And DOM showed higher humification degree from allochthonous sources with increasing autochthonous matter in reservoir reach, may due to high particulate organic matter and releasing autochthonous DOM from phytoplankton blooms in the LCR, which can be evidenced by depleted DIC, enriched δ 13 C DIC and higher BIX. A unique fluorescent fraction (C5) appeared in the reservoir reach and increased along water flow, which was strongly associated with dissolved CO 2 and N 2 O. Meanwhile, BIX value decreased with increasing dam height, hydraulic residence time (HRT), and reservoir capacity, which may promote CH 4 production, highlighting variation of DOM compositions in understanding the effect of greenhouse gas (GHG) dynamics in the LCR. The findings were essential for comprehending the influences of cascade reservoirs on carbon cycle, and informed policy development for the sustainable management of transboundary water resources like the LCR.

Abstract:Artificial flow regulation is an important measure to alleviate water shortages and improve the ecological quality of river basins. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a crucial role in the carbon cycle and regulates biogeochemical and ecological processes in aquatic systems. Among the numerous studies on the effects of anthropogenic activities on the quality and quantity of river DOM, few studies have focused on the influence of different artificially regulated flow on the composition, source, and fate of fluvial DOM. This study aims to elucidate the impact of different artificial regulation modes of river flows on the source, migration, and transformation of DOM. The optical properties of DOM were used to explore the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of DOM in the Yongding River Basin, where artificial regulation of river flows by cross-basin and inner-basin water transfers were implemented. Excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy coupled with parallel factor analysis revealed four fluorescent substances of DOM in the water: one microbial humic-like (C1), one terrestrial humic-like (C2), one non-point source pollution humic-like (C4), and one tryptophan-like (C3) substance. Due to cross-basin water transfer from the Yellow River, the flow is the highest (21.79 m3/s) during spring, which was the reason that the signal of C2 was stronger during spring (71.45 QSU) compared to summer (57.12 QSU) and autumn (51.78 QSU). Due to inner-basin water transfer from upstream reservoirs, C3 derived from autochthonous sources were higher during autumn (130.81 QSU) than during spring (77.17 QSU) and summer (93.16 QSU). With no water transfer, more C1 were present at higher temperatures during summer (141.51 QSU) than during spring (126.73 QSU) and autumn (128.8 QSU). Moreover, C4 originating from urban and/or agricultural non-point source runoff increased during summer (57.07 QSU) than during spring (33.29 QSU) and autumn (52.27 QSU) because of increased rainfall. The different modes of artificial regulation of river flows changed the hydrological characteristics of the basin, which in turn altered the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of the quantity and quality of DOM. The finding of this study can help promote the development of appropriate management strategies for artificial regulation of river flows in the basin. Furthermore, this study provides a basis for investigating the effects of different artificial flow regulations on the carbon cycles and ecological risks of rivers in the basin.
