Abstract:Super-resolution acoustic imaging with state-of-the-art spatial resolution (lambda/50), with lambda being the wavelength, is showcased with a holey-structured metalens. However, the imaging mechanism under unity transmission based on Fabry-Perot resonances means the metalens fundamentally suffers from narrow bandwidth and limited deep-subwavelength contrast, and therefore further advancement of deepsubwavelength imaging has been stalled. Here we break the barriers for deep-subwavelength acoustic imaging comprehensively in spatial resolution, resolving contrast, and working bandwidth, by exploiting field enhancement inside the metalens. A microscopic model is established to theoretically reveal the underlying physics for escalated deep-subwavelength acoustic imaging. For a proof-of-concept, the imaging performance of the proposed method is numerically proven and experimentally demonstrated. Specifically, a breakthrough resolution below lambda/100 is achieved while resolving contrast is improved by at least 6.5 times and working bandwidth is broadened to approximately 25% of the operating frequency. Furthermore, pulsed acoustic imaging on the deep-subwavelength scale is showcased, which is an important step towards the practical application of the ultrahigh-resolution acoustic imaging technique. We believe the work presented here may greatly benefit a variety of fields in acoustics, such as visualizing subcutaneous structures in medical diagnosis and characterizing subsurface flaws in industrial nondestructive evaluation.

Abstract:New technique of magnetoacoustic tomography with magnetic induction (MAT-MI) is introduced. Through improving the image reconstruction algorithm, the imaging object need not be placed in the uniform magnetic field area, and this make it possible for we to use only one permanent-magnet and one exciting coil to achieve image reconstruction. Therefore, the new technique can simplify the structure of the image system and then reduce the development cost availability. This is significant for the application of MAT-MI. To test the validity of the technique, test model was analyzed, and the availability of the method was demonstrated.

Abstract:Using hybrid piezoelectric/magnetic systems we have generated large amplitude magnetization waves mediated by magneto-elasticity with up to 25 degrees variation in the magnetization orientation. We present direct imaging and quantification of both standing and propagating acoustomagnetic waves with different wavelengths, over large distances up to several millimeters in a nickel thin film.

Abstract:The interaction between acoustic wave and magnetization in ferromagnetic thin films has attracted great attention due to its interesting physics and potential applications. However, up to now, the magneto-acoustic interaction has mainly been studied on the basis of magnetostriction. In this Letter, we develop a phase field model of magneto-acoustic interaction based on the Einstein-de Haas effect, and predict the acoustic wave during the ultrafast core reversal of magnetic vortex in a ferromagnetic disk. Because of the Einstein-de Haas effect, the ultrafast change of magnetization at the vortex core leads to a large mechanical angular momentum, which induces a body couple at the vortex core and excites a high-frequency acoustic wave. Moreover, the displacement amplitude of the acoustic wave is highly dependent on the gyromagnetic ratio. The smaller the gyromagnetic ratio is, the larger the displacement amplitude is. The present work not only provides a new mechanism for dynamic magnetoelastic coupling but also sheds new insights on the magneto-acoustic interaction.
A study of acoustic source generation mechanism of Magnetoacoustic Tomography

Abstract:Magnetoacoustic Tomography (MAT) is a non-invasive imaging modality for electrical conductivity with good contrast and high spatial resolution. We have analyzed the acoustic source generation mechanism of MAT and presented its physical model, including the simulations and experiments in this paper. In MAT, acoustic sources are generated in a conductive object placed in a static magnetic field. Pulsed current is injected into the object and produces a Lorentz force due to the static magnetic filed. Acoustic vibration was excited by the Lorentz force, and hence, ultrasound waves propagate in all directions and are collected with transducers placed around the object. The conductivity image can then be reconstructed with acoustic waves using some reconstruction algorithms. Because the acoustic source generation mechanism of MAT is the key problem of forward and inverse problems, we analyzed the physical process of acoustic source generation and presented the acoustic dipole source model according to the Lorentz force imposed on the object. In addition, computer simulations and experiments were also conducted. The results of simulations applying an acoustic dipole source model are consistent with experimental results. This study has cardinal significance for the accurate algorithm of MAT and provides a methodology and reference for acoustic source problems.

Abstract:Ultrasonic guided waves have been successfully applied in nondestructive evaluation (NDE) and structural health monitoring (SHM) of pressure vessels and pipelines due to their advantages, such as long detection range and high inspection efficiency. Compared with other ultrasonic guided wave actuators, magnetostrictive transducers are more cost-effective, involve simpler fabrication process, and have higher possible transduction efficiency. The normal mode expansion (NME) method is adopted to analyze the forced response and perturbation analysis of elastic hollow cylinders with respect to magnetostrictive loadings, including partial loading, axial array loading, and circular array loading. The phase velocity and frequency spectra of axisymmetric/non-axisymmetric guided waves excited by magnetostrictive transducers are analyzed. The theoretically predicted trends are verified by finite element numerical simulations and experiments.
Optical Sensing of Magnons Via the Magnetoelastic Displacement

Abstract:We show how to measure a steady-state magnon population in the magnetostatic mode of a ferromagnet or ferrimagnet, such as yttrium iron garnet. We adopt an optomechanical approach and utilize the magnetoelasticity of the ferromagnet. The magnetostrictive force dispersively couples magnons to the deformation displacement of the ferromagnet, which is proportional to the magnon population. By further coupling the mechanical displacement to an optical cavity that is resonantly driven by a weak laser, the magnetostrictively induced displacement can be sensed by measuring the phase quadrature of the optical field. The phase shows excellent linear dependence on the magnon population for a not very large population and can thus be used as a "magnometer" to measure the magnon population. We further study the effect of thermal noises and find a high signal-to-noise ratio even at room temperature. At cryogenic temperatures, the resolution of magnon excitation numbers is essentially limited by the vacuum fluctuations of the phase, which can be significantly improved by using a squeezed light.

Abstract:In magnetoacoustic tomography with magnetic induction and magnetically mediated thermoacoustic imaging, tissues are exposed to an alternating field, generating magnetoacoustic and thermoacoustic effects in the tissues. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between magnetoacoustic and thermoacoustic effects in a low-conductivity object put in a Gauss-pulsed alternating magnetic field. First, the derivations of the magnetic flux density and electric field strength induced by a Gauss-pulsed current flowing through the coil based on the theory of electromagnetic field were examined. Second, the analytical solution of the magnetic field was studied by simulation. To validate the accuracy of the analytical solution, the analytical solution and the numerical simulation of the magnetic flux density were compared. It shows that the analytical solution coincides with the numerical simulation well. Then, based on the theoretical analysis of the acoustic source generation, numerical studies were conducted to simulate pressures excited by magnetoacoustic and thermoacoustic effects in low-conductivity objects similar to tissues in the Gauss-pulsed magnetic field. The thermoacoustic effect played a leading role in low-conductivity objects placed in the Gauss-pulsed magnetic field, and the magnetoacoustic effect could be ignored. This study provided the theoretical basis for further research on magnetoacoustic tomography with magnetic induction and magnetically mediated thermoacoustic imaging for pathological tissues.

Abstract:Acoustic wave in solid has two modes of propagation: the bulk acoustic wave (BAW), which propagates inside solid in the form of longitudinal or transverse wave, and the surface acoustic wave (SAW), which is generated on the surface of solid and propagates along the surface. In acoustic radio frequency (RF) technologies acoustic waves are used to intercept and process RF signals, which are typified by the rapidly developing RF filter technology. Acoustic filter has the advantages of small size, low cost, steady performance and simple fabrication, and is widely used in mobile communication and other fields. Due to the mature fabrication process and well-defined resonance frequency of acoustic device, acoustic wave has become an extremely intriguing way to manipulate magnetism and spin current, with the goal of pursuing miniaturized, ultra-fast, and energy-efficient spintronic device applications. The integration of magnetic materials into acoustic RF device also provides a new way of thinking about the methods of acoustic device modulation and performance enhancement. This review first summarizes various physical mechanisms of magneto-acoustic coupling, and then based on these mechanisms, a variety of magnetic and spin phenomena such as acoustically controlled magnetization dynamics, magnetization switching, magnetic domain wall and magnetic skyrmions generation and motion, and spin current generation are systematically introduced. In addition, the research progress of magnetic control of acoustic wave, the inverse process of acoustic control of magnetism, is discussed, including the magnetic modulation of acoustic wave parameters and nonreciprocal propagation of acoustic waves, as well as new magneto-acoustic devices developed based on this, such as SAW-based magnetic field sensors, magneto-electric antennas, and tunable filters. Finally, the possible research objectives and applications of magneto-acoustic coupling in the future are prospected. In summary, the field of magneto-acoustic coupling is still in a stage of rapid development, and a series of groundbreaking breakthroughs has been made in the last decades, and the major advances are summarized in this field. The field of magneto-acoustic coupling is expected to make further significant breakthroughs, and we hope that this review will further promote the researches of physical phenomena of the coupling between magnetism and acoustic wave, spin and lattice, and potential device applications as well.

Abstract:Based on the acoustic radiation theory of a dipole source, the influence of the transducer reception pattern is studied for magnetoacoustic tomography with magnetic induction (MAT-MI). Numerical studies are conducted to simulate acoustic pressures, waveforms, and reconstructed images with unidirectional, omnidirectional, and strong directional transducers. With the analyses of equivalent and projection sources, the influences of the model dimension and the layer effect are qualitatively analyzed to evaluate the performance of MAT-MI. Three-dimensional simulation studies show that the strong directional transducer with a large radius can reduce the influences of equivalent sources, projection sources, and the layer effect effectively, resulting in enhanced pressure and improved image contrast, which is beneficial for boundary pressure extraction in conductivity reconstruction. The reconstructed conductivity contrast images present the conductivity boundaries as stripes with different contrasts and polarities, representing the values and directions of the conductivity changes of the scanned layer. The favorable results provide solid evidence for transducer selection and suggest potential practical applications of MAT-MI in biomedical imaging.

Abstract:Magnetoacoustic tomography with magnetic induction has shown potential applications in imaging the electrical impedance for biological tissues. We present a novel methodology for the inverse problem solution of the 2-D Lorentz force distribution reconstruction based on the acoustic straight line propagation theory. The magnetic induction and acoustic generation as well as acoustic detection are theoretically provided as explicit formulae and also validated by the numerical simulations for a multilayered cylindrical phantom model. The reconstructed 2-D Lorentz force distribution reveals not only the conductivity configuration in terms of shape and size but also the amplitude value of the Lorentz force in the examined layer. This study provides a basis for further study of conductivity distribution reconstruction of MAT-MI in medical imaging.

Abstract:We use surface acoustic waves of 1 and 3 GHz in hybrid piezoelectric-magnetic systems with either cobalt or nickel as a magnetic layer to generate magnetoacoustic waves and directly image them using stroboscopic X-ray magnetic circular dichroism imaging. Our measurements visualize and quantify the amplitudes of both acoustic and magnetic components of the magnetoacoustic waves, which are generated in the ferromagnetic layer and can propagate over millimeter distances. Additionally, we quantifiedy the magnetoelastic strain component for cobalt and nickel through micromagnetic simulations. We obtained a drop in the magnetoacoustic signal at 3 GHz suggesting a speed limit for the efficient magnetoelastic coupling in our hybrid devices.

Abstract:BackgroundMagneto-acoustic tomography with current injection involves using electrical impedance imaging technology. To explore the potential applications in imaging biological tissue and enhance image quality, a new scan mode for the transducer is proposed that is based on translational and circular scanning to record acoustic signals from sources.MethodsAn imaging algorithm to analyze these signals is developed in respect to this alternative scanning scheme. Numerical simulations and physical experiments were conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of this scheme. An experiment using a graphite sheet as a tissue-mimicking phantom medium was conducted to verify simulation results. A pulsed voltage signal was applied across the sample, and acoustic signals were recorded as the transducer performed stepped translational or circular scans. The imaging algorithm was used to obtain an acoustic-source image based on the signals.ResultsIn simulations, the acoustic-source image is correlated with the conductivity at the sample boundaries of the sample, but image results change depending on distance and angular aspect of the transducer. In general, as angle and distance decreases, the image quality improves. Moreover, experimental data confirmed the correlation.ConclusionThe acoustic-source images resulting from the alternative scanning mode has yielded the outline of a phantom medium. This scan mode enables improvements to be made in the sensitivity of the detecting unit and a change to a transducer array that would improve the efficiency and accuracy of acoustic-source images.

Ultrafast Nanoimaging of Spin-Mediated Shear Waves in an Acoustic Cavity

Abstract:Strong spin-lattice coupling in van der Waals (vdW) magnets shows potential for innovative magneto-mechanical applications. Here, nanoscale and picosecond imaging by ultrafast electron microscopy reveal heterogeneous spin-mediated coherent acoustic phonon dynamics in a thin-film cavity of the vdW antiferromagnet FePS3. The harmonics of the interlayer shear acoustic modes are observed, in which the even and odd harmonics exhibit distinct nanoscopic dynamics. Corroborated by acoustic wave simulation, the role of defects in forming even harmonics is elucidated. Above the Néel temperature (TN), the interlayer shear acoustic harmonics are suppressed, while the in-plane traveling wave is predominantly excited. The dominant acoustic dynamics shifts from the out-of-plane shear to the in-plane traveling wave across TN, demonstrating that magnetic properties can influence phonon scattering pathways. The spatiotemporally resolved structural characterization provides valuable nanoscopic insights for interlayer-shear-mode-based acoustic cavities, opening up possibilities for magneto-mechanical applications of vdW magnets.

Abstract:We provide a mathematical analysis and a numerical framework for magnetoacoustic tomography with magnetic induction. The imaging problem is to reconstruct the conductivity distribution of biological tissue from measurements of the Lorentz force induced tissue vibration. We begin with reconstructing from the acoustic measurements the divergence of the Lorentz force, which is acting as the source term in the acoustic wave equation. Then we recover the electric current density from the divergence of the Lorentz force. To solve the nonlinear inverse conductivity problem, we introduce an optimal control method for reconstructing the conductivity from the electric current density. We prove its convergence and stability. We also present a point fixed approach and prove its convergence to the true solution. A new direct reconstruction scheme involving a partial differential equation is then proposed based on viscosity-type regularization to a transport equation satisfied by the electric current density field. We prove that solving such an equation yields the true conductivity distribution as the regularization parameter approaches zero. Finally, we test the three schemes numerically in the presence of measurement noise, quantify their stability and resolution, and compare their performance.

Abstract:Detection of phonons is critical for research on the interconversion between resonantly coupled magnons and phonons. Here we report the direct visualization of the resonant coupling of magnons and phonons by microfocused Brillouin light scattering on the Ni/LiNbO3 hybrid heterostructure. The static patterns of surface acoustic wave phonons, originating from the interference between the incident wave ψ0(A0,k,φ0) and reflected wave ψ1(A1,−k,φ1), can be modulated by magnetic field due to the magnon-phonon coupling. By analyzing the information of phonons obtained from Brillouin spectroscopy, the properties of the magnon system (Ni film), e.g., ferromagnetic resonance field and resonance linewidth, can be determined. The results provide spatially resolved information about phonon manipulation and detection in a coupled magnon-phonon system.

Abstract:Magnons, recognized as the quanta of spin waves, offer a pathway for transmitting information without the need for electron motion, thus emerging as a leading candidate for the next generation of low-power electronics. Firstly, this study gives an overview by examining magnon modes possessing infinite wavelengths or zero wave numbers (known as ferromagnetic resonance) in classical ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic, and synthetic antiferromagnetic systems. It delves into the dynamics of magnetization, particularly focusing on magnetic moments precession and the corresponding dispersion relationships under two distinct acoustic and optic eigenmodes. Furthermore, it elaborates on a novel hybrid quantum system termed magnon-magnon coupling. The study elucidates the mechanism behind the robust coupling between acoustic and optic magnon modes. Finally, we briefly discuss the current challenges and future research directions in this field.

Abstract:The interaction between surface acoustic waves (SAWs) and spin waves (SWs) in a piezoelectric-magnetic thin film heterostructure yields potential for the realization of novel microwave devices and applications in magnonics. In the present work, we characterize magnetoacoustic waves in three adjacent magnetic micro-stripes made from CoFe + Ga, CoFe, and CoFe + Pt with a single pair of tapered interdigital transducers (TIDTs). The magnetic micro-stripes were deposited by focused electron beam-induced deposition and focused ion beam-induced deposition direct-writing techniques. The transmission characteristics of the TIDTs are leveraged to selectively address the individual micro-stripes. Here, the external magnetic field is continuously rotated out of the plane of the magnetic thin film and the forward volume SW geometry is probed with the external magnetic field along the film normal. Our experimental findings are well explained by an extended phenomenological model based on a modified Landau–Lifshitz–Gilbert approach that considers SWs with nonzero wave vectors. Magnetoelastic excitation of forward volume SWs is possible because of the vertical shear strain ɛ xz of the Rayleigh-type SAW.
