Abstract:Increasing use of manure nutrients in crop production and decreasing the input of chemical fertilizers, is a promising way to achieve a more circular economy and more sustainable food systems. The integrated effects of amended composting manure with additives and a 50% substitution of chemical fertilizer nitrogen (N) input by amended manure N input to cropland were proved to halve ammonia (NH3) emissions from an integrate manure-cropland system. However, the accompanied impacts of these measures on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from the integrate manure-cropland system have not been well quantified. Here, we examined the effects of improved manure storage and treatment and its usage at field on GHG emissions from a system perspective, based on a two-year experiment in the North China Plain (NCP). Manure storage and treatment included natural storage (NS) and composting with straw, with or without amendment by zeolite (Z) and superphosphate (SP). Manure products were applied as basal fertilizer for both crops. Results showed that CH4 was the dominant GHG source in the natural storage treatment, whereas N2O dominated in the manure composting treatments. Amending manure with straw, Z and SP stimulated 15–48 times N2O emission and decreased CH4 emissions by 82%–91% during storage and treatment. Replacement of 50% synthetic fertilizer N by manure N decreased total system GHG emissions by 25%–34%. Differences between composted manure treatments in total system GHG emissions were relatively small, although comparatively higher in amended manure treatments; however, they promoted greater soil organic carbon sink activity, resulting in no significant difference in net global warming potential (GWP) and greenhouse gas emission intensity (GHGI). Application of amended manure produced high nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in the integrated crop–manure system. The NH3 mitigation approach of replacing 50% of synthetic fertilizer N by amended manure N synergistically decreased total GHG emissions, increased system NUE and also increased the net economic benefit by 5%–11% over the 2 years of the experiment.
Role of Organic and Conservation Agriculture in Ammonia Emissions and Crop Productivity in China

Abstract:There is an increasing food demand with growing population and limited land for agriculture. Conventional agriculture with nitrogen (N) fertilizer applications, however, is a key source of ammonia (NH3) emissions that cause severe haze pollution and impair human health. Organic and conservation agricultural (OCA) practices are thereby recommended to address these dual challenges; however, whether OCA provides cobenefits for both air quality and crop productivity is controversial. Here, we perform a meta-analysis and machine learning algorithm with data from China, a global hotspot for agricultural NH3 emissions, to quantify the effects of OCA on NH3 emissions, crop yields and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE). We find that the effects of OCA depend on soil and climate conditions, and the 40-60% substitution of synthetic fertilizers with livestock manure achieves the maximum cobenefits of enhanced crop production and reduced NH3 emissions. Model forecasts further suggest that the appropriate application of livestock manure, straw return, and no-till could increase grain production up to 59.7 million metric tons (100% of straw return) and reduce maximum US$2.7 billion (60% substitution with livestock manure) in damage costs to human health from NH3 emissions by 2030. Our findings provide data-driven pathways and options for achieving multiple sustainable development goals and improving food systems and air quality in China.

Abstract:China's gains in food production over the past four decades have been associated with substantial agricultural nitrogen losses, which contribute to air and water pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and damage to human health. Here, we explore the potential to improve agricultural production practices that simultaneously increase yields while addressing these environmental challenges. We link agronomic research with air quality modelling for an integrated assessment of four improved nitrogen management strategies: improved farm management practices with nitrogen use reductions; machine deep placement of fertilizer; enhanced-efficiency fertilizer use; and improved manure management. We find that simultaneous implementation of the four strategies provides the largest benefits, which include: reductions in PM2.5 concentrations and associated premature deaths; increases in grain yields and grain nitrogen use efficiency; reductions in NO3- leaching and runoff and greenhouse gas emissions. Total benefits of US$30 billion per year exceed the US$18 billion per year in costs. Our findings indicate that policies that improve farmers' agricultural nitrogen management in China will improve both food security and public health while addressing multiple environmental challenges. Similar increases in attention on agricultural policy around the world are likely to provide large benefits in food security, environmental integrity and public health.

Abstract:Abstract Atmospheric ammonia (NH3) has multiple impacts on the environment, climate change and human health. China is the largest emitter of NH3 globally, with the dynamic inventory of NH3 emission remaining uncertain. Here, we use the high-resolution secondary national pollution survey, integrated satellite data, 15N isotope source apportionment and multiple models to better understand those key features of NH3 emissions and its impacts in China. Our results show that the total NH3 emissions were estimated to be 12.3 Tg yr-1 in 2017 with three emission peaks in April, June and October. NH3 emissions have contributed approximately 23% to secondary PM2.5 formation, a 19.7% increase in nitrogen loading of surface waters, while ammonium deposition led to a decrease in soil pH by 0.0035 units and an increase in the terrestrial carbon sink by 48.8 Tg C yr-1. Reducing agricultural NH3 emissions in China would contribute to the mitigation of air and water pollution challenges, saving damage costs estimated at around 22 billion US dollars due to avoided human and ecosystem health impacts.

Abstract:Ammonia (NH3) emissions have been linked to the formation of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in the air, and PM2.5 pollution has been shown to damage environment quality and public health on a global scale. Current management practices can reduce NH3 emissions significantly. However, reduction effects of these measures are only considered for specific source or chain. Potentials of NH3 emissions reduction from the whole agricultural systems by integrating current management measures and how agricultural NH3 emissions affect PM2.5 pollution by these integrated measures at the provincial level in China is poorly quantified. Thus, we calculated the potential to mitigate NH3 emissions under different integrated reduction measures and assessed the mitigation effect on PM2.5 pollution at the provincial level in China. Furthermore, costs for agricultural NH3 emission abatement and health benefits from reducing PM2.5 pollution by agricultural NH3 control were evaluated. We found that total agricultural NH3 emissions in China was 12.5 Tg N in 2017, which can be reduced by 74% if highly effective reduction techniques are integrated applying, with the potential to reduce PM2.5 pollution from 43 to 28 μg m−3. The cost to implement the mitigation scenarios ranged from 57 to 999 billion ¥, while the health benefits from PM2.5 pollution control increased from 1471 to 1768 billion ¥ when NH3 emissions were reduced from 47 to 74%. The benefit-to-cost ratio was much higher in provinces/cities with highly developed economies and a high population density than those with less developed economies.

Abstract:Livestock and crop production are the main sources of ammonia (NH3) emissions, which are known to degrade the air quality. Numerous studies have been conducted to explore the mitigation potential of various approaches, although few have examined the systematic NH3 emission mitigation potential when considering both crop and livestock systems based on coherent in situ measurement results. Herein, we design an optimal system wherein coupled crop and layer production systems reveal feasible approaches for significant mitigation potential at each stage of the process. Specifically, these measures involve (i) using a low crude protein (LCP) feed, (ii) composting manure with certain additives, and (iii) substituting manure with optimal fertilization in a summer maize-winter wheat cropping system. The results show that (i) LCP feed leads to a 14 % reduction in NH3 emissions at the housing stage, (ii) introducing additives during the composing stage reduces NH3 emissions by 16 %–46 %, and (iii) the NH3 reduction potential reaches 35 %–44 % at the field application stage. In the overall crop-layer system, the optimal system with the improved management strategy applied at every stage results in a 48 % and 56 % reduction in NH3 emissions for per unit eggs and grain production, respectively, relative to a traditional production system. This study confirms that NH3 emissions can be cut in half by implementing optimal crop-livestock systems with appropriate mitigation approaches. This is a feasible model that can be promoted and extended in various agricultural areas, which together with technological, policy, and economic support can enable significant mitigation potential for sustainable agriculture development.

Abstract:Ammonia (NH3) emissions, the majority of which arise from livestock production, are linked to high concentration of PM2.5 and lower air quality in China. NH3 mitigation options were well studied at the small-scale (laboratory or pilot), however, they lack of a large-scale test in China. This study fills this crucial gap by evaluating the cost-benefit of pioneering NH3 mitigation projects carried out for a whole county – Sheyang, Jiangsu province, China. Measures were implemented in 2019 following two distinct strategies, improved manure treatment for industrial livestock farms, and collection and central treatment for traditional livestock farms. Emission reductions of 16% were achieved in a short time. While this is remarkable, it falls short of expectations from small-scale studies. If measures were fully implemented according to purpose and meet expectations from the small scale, higher emission reductions of 42% would be possible. The cost benefit analysis presented in this study demonstrated advantages of central manure treatment over in-farm facilities. With improved implementation of mitigation strategies in industrial livestock farms, traditional livestock farms may play an increasing role in total NH3 emissions, which means such farms either need to be included in future NH3 mitigation policies or gradually replaced by industrial livestock farms.The study found an agricultural NH3 reduction technology route suitable for China's national conditions (such as the "Sheyang Model").

Abstract:Ammonia (NH3) is one of the main precursors of secondary inorganic aerosols. In 2018, the NH3 emissions of China's cereal production (rice, wheat and maize) were estimated to be 3.3 Mt NH3-N. Numerous NH3 mitigation strategies have been developed in agriculture to reduce the emissions and improve air quality. However, due to the cost and unfeasibility of some developed techniques, the application of these mitigation measures is relatively slow in cropland. Therefore, developing low-cost, easy-operation, and feasible mitigation measures is an important breakthrough to solve the pollution of ammonia emissions in grain fields. The one-time deep application of nitrogen fertilizer in crop growing season, referred to as one-time application, is a promising ammonia mitigation measure for grain fields. It is a low-cost mode of fertilizer application suitable for grain fields as it saves labor and reduces the input of agricultural machinery. Therefore, incentive policies should be formulated to promote it for wide-range application in the whole country, especially in the areas with serious ammonia pollution, in order to achieve the goal of green and sustainable agricultural production.

Abstract:Ammonia emissions in China mainly came from agricultural activities. Excess emissions could lead to degraded air quality and excess nitrogen deposition. Therefore, it is essential to improve air quality and nitrogen deposition through agricultural ammonia reduction measures. On the basis of the existing research, this study established an Agricultural Management Technology-Ammonia emission assessment platform with 51 measures of fertilizer application and 53 measures of livestock farming derived from a literature review and adopted the Monte Carlo method to apply this platform to Beijing-Tianjing-Heibei (BTH) region where active agricultural activities occur. An updated agricultural ammonia emission inventory at 3-km resolution in BTH region was used in this study. We find that ammonia emissions from livestock farming could be reduced by 79-151Gg (30%-57%) and from fertilizer application by 58-163Gg (18%-51%) in BTH region in 2019. We applied two reduction scenarios that could achieve average and maximum ammonia emission reduction based on the Monte Carlo results, and evaluated the resulting improvements of air quality and deposition using the GCHP model with a resolution of 10km × 10km in BTH region. The results show that the baseline of PM2.5 concentration, NHX and NOy deposition in BTH region in 2019 is 27-61 µg/m3, 8-57 Gg N/month and 3-51 Gg N/month. Under two ammonia emission reduction scenarios, PM2.5 concentration and NHx deposition would, respectively, reduce 1.38-3.89 µg/m3, 3-14 Gg N/month while NOy deposition would increase 0.5-2 Gg N/month. Our research shows that agricultural ammonia has great emission reduction potential that would benefit to the reduction of nitrogen pollution.
Evaluating Nitrogen Management Practices for Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction in a Maize Farmland in the North China Plain: Adapting to Climate Change

Abstract:Quantification of the trade-offs among greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, yield, and farmers' incomes is essential for proposing economic and environmental nitrogen (N) management strategies for optimizing agricultural production. A four-year (2017–2020) field experiment (including four treatments: basic N fertilizer treatment (BF), suitable utilization of fertilization (SU), emission reduction treatment (ER), and high fertilization (HF)) was conducted on maize (Zea mays L.) in the North China Plain. The Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method was used in this study to quantify the GHG emissions and farmers' incomes during the whole maize production process. The total GHG emissions of BF, SU, ER, and HF treatments in the process of maize production are 10,755.2, 12,908.7, 11,950.1, and 14,274.5 kg CO2-eq ha−1, respectively, of which the direct emissions account for 84.8%, 76.8%, 74.9%, and 71.0%, respectively. Adding inhibitors significantly reduced direct GHG emissions, and the N2O and CO2 emissions from the maize fields in the ER treatment decreased by 30.0% and 7.9% compared to those in the SU treatment. Insignificant differences in yield were found between the SU and ER treatments, indicating that adding fertilizer inhibitors did not affect farmers' incomes while reducing GHG emissions. The yield for SU, ER, and HF treatments all significantly increased by 12.9–24.0%, 10.0–20.7%, and 2.1–17.4% compared to BF, respectively. In comparison with BF, both SU and ER significantly promoted agricultural net profit (ANP) by 16.6% and 12.2%, with mean ANP values of 3101.0 USD ha−1 and 2980.0 USD ha−1, respectively. Due to the high agricultural inputs, the ANP values in the HF treatment were 11.2%, 16.6%, and 12.4% lower than those in the SU treatment in 2018–2020. In conclusion, the combination of N fertilizer and inhibitors proved to be an environmentally friendly, high-profit, and low-emissions production technology while sustaining or even increasing maize yields in the North China Plain, which was conducive to achieving agricultural sustainability.

Abstract:Excessive irrigation and nitrogen application have long seriously undermined agricultural sustainability in the North China Plain (NCP), leading to declining groundwater tables and intensified greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Developing low-input management practices that meet the growing food demand while reducing environmental costs is urgently needed. Here, we developed a novel nitrogen management strategy for a typical winter wheat-summer maize rotation system in the NCP under limited irrigation (wheat sowing irrigation only (W0) or sowing and jointing irrigation (W1)) and low nitrogen input (360 kg N ha −1 , about 70 % of traditional annual nitrogen input). Novel nitrogen management strategy promoted efficient nitrogen fertilizer uptake and utilization by both crops via optimization of nitrogen fertilizer allocation between the two crops, i.e., increasing nitrogen inputs to wheat (from 180 to 240 kg N ha −1 ) while reducing nitrogen inputs to maize (from 180 to 120 kg N ha −1 ). Three-year field study demonstrated that integrated management practices combining novel nitrogen management strategy with limited irrigation increased annual yields and PFPN by 1.9–5.7 %, and reduced TGE by 55–68 kg CO 2 −eq ha −1 and GHGI by 2.2–10.3 %, without any additional cost. Our results provide agricultural operators and policymakers with practical and easy-to-scalable integrated management strategy, and offer key initiative to promote grain production in the NCP towards agriculture sustainable intensification with high productivity and efficiency, water conservation and emission reduction.

Abstract:China is the world's largest country on ammonia (NH3) emission, which results in sever air pollution there. China's updated Clean Air Act has started to pay attention to NH3 reduction, but it is believed that solutions are mainly constrained by implementation of suitable technologies. Here we argued that socioeconomic barriers are the key to hinder the reduction of agricultural NH3 emission for better air quality in China. We found that small farm size is the key driving force for high NH3 emission from croplands, while little manure storage and recycle facilities and the mismatch of livestock and cropland on spatial distribution are the reasons for high NH3 emission from livestock. Overcoming these socioeconomic barriers could at least reduce half of the agricultural NH3 emission while maintaining food production in China. It not only can benefit air quality but also reduce potentials of eutrophication, groundwater contamination, soil acidification, biodiversity loss, and greenhouse gas emission.
Ammonia Volatilization from Irrigated and Non-Irrigated Winter Wheat Plots in the North China Plain - Quantification and Modeling

Abstract:China’s growing population led to a drastic intensification of agriculture and livestock production in the last 50 years. Excessive mineral nitrogen (N) fertilizer application and intensive livestock production cause high N losses to the environment. Pathways of N losses may include gaseous N emissions via nitrification/denitrification (N2O, N2), ammonia (NH3) volatilization, nitrate leaching and surface run-off from soils. Ammonia emissions are one of the most important N loss pathways in the North China Plain (NCP) contributing to soil acidification, eutrophication of ecosystems and causing human health problems through combining with particles in the atmosphere which also impair visibility. For developing mitigation measures in a winter wheat cropping system, systematic measurements of NH3 volatilization were conducted in the NCP in Zhengding, 260 km southwest of Beijing. Ammonia emissions were measured with the calibrated Drager-Tube method during the main crop growing season of winter wheat from April to June 2016. The treatments included urea and urea followed by immediate irrigation. Additionally, soil samples were taken from three depth increments (0-30, 30-60 and 60-90 cm) before and after fertilization and the NH3 volatilization was simulated with the HERMES model. The soils showed highest mineral nitrogen (Nmin) contents of up to 340 kg ha-1 (0-90 cm) after fertilization. A decrease in the calcium carbonate content and soil pH in topsoils (0-20 cm) (pH: 6.7) compared to subsoil horizons (pH: 7.7) was attributed to the long-term application of ammonium-based fertilizers as well as to high atmospheric deposition rates of ammonium and sulfuric compounds. Urea applied to winter wheat showed an NH3 loss equal to 22% the of applied N. Application of urea to winter wheat followed by irrigation yielded a reduction of the NH3 volatilization to 0.1% of the applied N. An improved N management based on the soil Nmin content is recommended to improve nitrogen use efficiency and to reduce N losses to the environment. Irrigation after fertilization can be recommended for reduction of NH3 volatilization, provided that other N loss pathways are of minor importance. The NH3 volatilization sub-module of the HERMES model enabled to simulate ammonia volatilization in the NCP satisfactorily. It is suggested to validate the model with further data sets from the NCP or from regions with comparable conditions.
Agricultural Management Practices in China Enhance Nitrogen Sustainability and Benefit Human Health

Abstract:The potential of enhanced agricultural management practices to drive sustainability is rarely quantified at grassroots level. Here we analyse nitrogen use and loss in Chinese cropland, drawing from data collected in 2,238,550 sites in two national agricultural pollution source censuses from 2007 to 2017. We find an upswing of 10% in crop yields and an 8% reduction in nitrogen pollution during this period, owing to the promotion and adoption of various management practices (including the combination of organic and chemical fertilizers, straw recycling and deep placement of fertilizer). These practices have collectively contributed to an 18% increase in nitrogen use efficiency in the country. By fully embracing them, we project that annual cropland pollution could be further reduced by up to 1.4 Mt of nitrogen without compromising crop yields. Environmental and human health benefits are projected to consistently outweigh implementation costs in the future, with total benefits reaching US$15 billion. The exact quantification of environmental and human health gains achieved through sustainable nitrogen management is often impaired by real-world data availability. Drawing on an extensive database in China, this study estimates the costs and benefits of combining organic and chemical fertilizers, straw recycling and deep placement of fertilizer.
Reducing N2O and NO emissions while sustaining crop productivity in a Chinese vegetable-cereal double cropping system

Abstract:High nitrogen (N) inputs in Chinese vegetable and cereal productions played key roles in increasing crop yields. However, emissions of the potent greenhouse gas nitrous oxide (N2O) and atmospheric pollutant nitric oxide (NO) increased too. For lowering the environmental costs of crop production, it is essential to optimize N strategies to maintain high crop productivity, while reducing the associated N losses. We performed a 2 year-round field study regarding the effect of different combinations of poultry manure and chemical N fertilizers on crop yields, N use efficiency (NUE) and N2O and NO fluxes from a Welsh onion-winter wheat system in the North China Plain. Annual N2O and NO emissions averaged 1.14-3.82 kg N ha-1 yr-1 (or 5.54-13.06 g N kg-1 N uptake) and 0.57-1.87 kg N ha-1 yr-1 (or 2.78-6.38 g N kg-1 N uptake) over all treatments, respectively. Both N2O and NO emissions increased linearly with increasing total N inputs, and the mean annual direct emission factors (EFd) were 0.39% for N2O and 0.19% for NO. Interestingly, the EFd for chemical N fertilizers (N2O: 0.42-0.48%; NO: 0.07-0.11%) was significantly lower than for manure N (N2O: 1.35%; NO: 0.76%). Besides, a negative power relationship between yield-scaled N2O, NO or N2O + NO emissions and NUE was observed, suggesting that improving NUE in crop production is crucial for increasing crop yields while decreasing nitrogenous gas release. Compared to the current farmers' fertilization rate, alternative practices with reduced chemical N fertilizers increased NUE and decreased annual N2O + NO emissions substantially, while crop yields remained unaffected. As a result, annual yield-scaled N2O + NO emissions were reduced by > 20%. Our study shows that a reduction of current application rates of chemical N fertilizers by 30-50% does not affect crop productivity, while at the same time N2O and NO emissions would be reduced significantly.

Abstract:The contribution to fine particulate air pollution (PM2.5) from ammonia emissions has been proven to be significant. In China, agricultural sources contribute to the majority of ammonia emissions. It is necessary and valuable to explore air quality improvements caused by the mitigation of agricultural ammonia emissions. The purpose of this study was to quantify the reduction effects on PM2.5 and secondary inorganic aerosols by performing air quality simulations based on the developed agricultural ammonia emission inventory at the county-level within the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) region. The results demonstrated that the total NH3 emission in the BTH region was 1625.03 Gg in 2015. Livestock manure spreading represented 58% of the total emissions (941.79 Gg NH3), while synthetic fertilizer applications accounted for the remaining 42% of the emissions. Spatially, the agricultural ammonia emissions were generally distributed over the southern BTH regions (Handan and Shijiazhuang) due to the intensive agricultural activities in this area. Temporally, the agricultural ammonia emissions peaked during summer, consistent with variations in temperature and agricultural practices. Compared to the baseline scenario, the annual average PM2.5 concentrations in the BTH region were reduced by 2.57%, 5.08%, and 5.71%, respectively, under the Progressive (NH3 emission cut by 21.26%), Stringent (NH3 emission cut by 45.58%), and Complex (NH3 emission cut by 46.63%) scenarios. Moreover, under the same conditions, secondary inorganic aerosols such as sulfate, nitrate, and ammonium were alleviated by 2.94–6.85%, 3.45–17.9%, and 4.24–23.32%, respectively. The results confirmed that mitigating ammonia emissions could lead to the considerable reduction of nitrate, followed by ammonium. In contrast, the impact on sulfate was relatively limited. This study could provide helpful and reliable evidence to determine effective mitigation measures and control strategies for policy makers.

Abstract:Ammonia (NH3) emitted from synthetic nitrogen (N) fertiliser applications to farmland leads to air pollution and terrestrial acidification. Previous studies have indicated that replacing urea-based N fertilisers by manure may reduce NH3 emissions and enhance crop yield. However, the long-term effects of replacing urea N fertiliser by manure on crop yield and NH3 emissions have not been sufficiently quantified. The objective of the field study presented here was to examine the effects of three treatments (i.e., 100% synthetic fertiliser N application (NPK); 50% synthetic fertiliser N +50% manure N application (50%MNS); and 100% manure N application (100%MNS)) on NH3 emissions and maize grain yields over a 3-year period in a long term (13 years) study site in the North China Plain. Results showed that the NH3 emissions in the NPK treatment ranged from 9.7 to 11.7 kg ha− 1 during the three maize growing seasons. Replacement of urea fertiliser by manure significantly decreased the NH3 emissions by 22–54% in the 50% MNS treatment and by 47–71% in the 100%MNS treatment. Maize grain yields were 14–30% higher in the 50%MNS treatment and 17–45% higher in the 100% MNS treatment, compared to the NPK treatment (8.1–8.8 t ha− 1). The NH3 emission factor for the NPK treatment ranged from 4.1 to 4.8%. Additional 15 N labelling work established that 83% of NH3 emissions originated from the urea fertiliser in the NPK treatment. Manure treatments had a higher maize N uptake and soil organic matter content, and a lower soil pH than the NPK treatment. This study highlights that replacing synthetic N fertiliser with manure on farmland in the North China Plain has long-term beneficial effects on maize yield and N uptake, NH3 emission mitigation and soil carbon storage.

Abstract:Setting nitrogen (N) emission targets for agricultural systems is crucial to prevent to air and groundwater pollution, yet such targets are rarely defined at the county level. In this study, we employed a forecasting-and-back casting approach to establish human health-based nitrogen targets for air and groundwater quality in Quzhou county, located in the North China Plain. By adopting the World Health Organization (WHO) phase I standard for PM2.5 concentration (35 μg m-3) and a standard of 11.3 mg NO3--N L-1 for nitrate in drinking water, we found that ammonia (NH3) emissions from the entire county must be reduced by at least 3.2 kilotons year-1 in 2050 to meet the WHO's PM2.5 phase I standard. Additionally, controlling other pollutants such as sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen oxides (NOx) is necessary, with required reductions ranging from 16% to 64% during 2017-2050. Furthermore, to meet the groundwater quality standard, nitrate nitrogen (NO3--N) leaching to groundwater should not exceed 0.8 kilotons year-1 by 2050. Achieving this target would require a 50% reduction in NH3 emissions and a 21% reduction in NO3--N leaching from agriculture in Quzhou in 2050 compared to their respective levels in 2017 (5.0 and 2.1 kilotons, respectively). Our developed method and the resulting N emission targets can support the development of environmentally-friendly agriculture by facilitating the design of control strategies to minimize agricultural N losses.
Improving smallholder farmers' maize yields and economic benefits under sustainable crop intensification in the North China Plain

Abstract:To meet the food demands of a growing population, the maize production systems deployed by smallholders in China have tended towards extremely intensive planting and excessive use of fertilizers, which have caused serious environmental impacts. This study investigated the balance between the maize yield and nitrogen (N) input in the North China Plain (NCP), which is one of the most important grain-producing region in China. Our study compared yield simulations generated by the DSSAT-CERES-Maize model with actual data from a number of multi-site field experiments and an extensive household surveys encompassing 1671 farmers. The smallholders' maize cultivars, plant population, and amount of N input on the crop yield and how these affects the economic benefits were analyzed. The results showed that the average traditional farming methods' yield was 72% of the attainable yield, which means that farmers have ample room to improve their yields. We also found that the maize yields varied widely between farmers, and that most of them applied excessive amounts of N but failing to achieve an optimal yield due to poor fertilization management techniques. The study found that the economic benefits achieved by the farmers were low, but after deploying high-yield (HY) methods, the yield was increased by 34.9% and the economic benefits by 14.4%. The greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions associated with the traditional farming methods were high and could potentially be reduced by 48.6%. All in all, farmers should be given guidance on how to appropriately increase the plant population, reduce the input of N fertilizer, and optimize farmland management measures, so that China can achieve intensive but sustainable agricultural production at a lower environmental cost. It was concluded that there are still numerous biological and abiotic factors that restrict production increases by smallholders. These factors vary from region to region and require further investigation.
