Abstract:It is challenging to effectively purge wastewater containing heavy metal ions at low concentration. In order to remove trace Cr (VI) from wastewater efficiently, a positively charged microporous membrane was prepared by firstly non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) of amphiphilic polymer and secondly surface quaternization modification. The morphologies, surface roughness, surface charge, hydrophilicity, and pore size of membranes were characterized. Based on the dual action of micellar adsorption and charge repulsion, when surfactant is 4 mM and Cr (VI) is 60 ppm, the surface quaternization membrane (Q-MPVD) achieves 99.8 % Cr (VI) rejection simultaneously accompanied by a permeability of 100 LMH/bar. Meanwhile, the effects of STAC concentration, Cr (VI) concentration, pH as well as inorganic salt concentration on the composite micellar size, and Cr (VI) rejection performance were investigated, respectively. Moreover, the Q-MPVD membrane shows an excellent separation stability over a wide pH range, indicating its application perspective in engineering process. In summary, this work provided a positively charged membrane with high-efficiency performance for treating practical trace Cr (VI)-containing industrial wastewater.

Abstract:To enhance hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) removal performance under acidic conditions, the nanofiltration (NF) membrane with enhanced negative charge was fabricated via introducing 2, 5-diaminobenzenesulfonic acid (DABSA) into polyamide layer. The control membrane (NF-P) was directly prepared from piperazine and 1, 3, 5-benzenetricarbonyltrichloride. Surface chemical compositions, morphology, surface charge, pore size, permeability and pH-dependent separation performance of the fabricated membranes were characterized. The membranes showed the similar water permeance (similar to 11.5 L m(-2) h(-1) bar(-1)) and Na2SO4 rejections (similar to 98%) under neutral environments. The DABSA introduced NF membrane (NF-PD) was negatively charged in the pH range of 2.5-11, while the isoelectric point for NF-P was similar to pH 4.0. Cr(VI) removal ability was then evaluated under various concentrations and pH environments. The results indicated that NF-PD showed the better Cr(VI) rejection performance in all tested conditions than NF-P, especially under acidic environments (e.g., pH 4 and pH 5). Moreover, there was a fluctuation of the rejection with the increase of Cr(VI) concentration under acidic environments, which was mainly caused by the formation of Cr2O72- species. The harmful Cr(VI) was efficiently removed by the NF membrane with enhanced negative charge under acidic environments, which indicated the wider application range of the NF membrane. Abstract:Zirconium-based metal-organic polyhedra (ZrMOPs) have gained significant attention owing to their well-defined cavities, stability and potential applications. Herein, a novel composite membrane (PDA/ZrT-1-NH 2 /PVDF) was developed by incorporating amino-functionalized ZrMOP (ZrT-1-NH 2 ) into polydopamine (PDA) and trimesoyl chloride (TMC) cross-linking system. Notably, the cationic ZrT-1-NH 2 cages were immobilized onto the membrane surface by a simple vacuum filtration method, which thus endowed the surface positive charge for the membrane. A pre-prepared composite membrane was used to remove Cr(VI) from the wastewater. The effects of pH, contact time, initial Cr(VI) concentration, temperature, coexisting ions competition and reusability were investigated in batch experiments. The results revealed the as-prepared composite membrane exhibited high removal efficiency of 96.6 % for Cr(VI) ions within 5 min. In addition, the adsorption rate was very fast, reaching adsorption equilibrium in less than 30 min. Finally, a possible adsorption mechanism was proposed. The adsorption process was dominated by physical adsorption accompanied by a partial reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III).

Abstract:Removing heavy metal ions from wastewater reduces health and ecological risks and allows for their reuse. Polymer inclusion membranes with integrated ion carriers offer an efficient solution for removing toxic metal ions from industrial wastewater. These membranes can be further enhanced by using biodegradables polymer blends and incorporating nanofillers to improve their selectivity, stability, extraction efficiency, and biodegradability. In this study, a novel biodegradable polymer blend consisting of 54% poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and 13% polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) was utilized as the base polymer, with 30% Aliquat 336 as an ion carrier and either 3% graphene oxide (GO) or 3% cloisite 30B (C30B) as nanofillers. The hybrid blend contained a total of 3% nanofillers, with 1.5% graphene oxide (GO) and 1.5% cloisite 30B (C30B). These components were integrated through the evaporation casting method and evaluated for their potential as polymer inclusion membranes (PIMs) for Cr(VI) extraction. Various analytical methods, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), were employed to explore the microstructure-property relationships of the fabricated nanocomposite PIMs. The analyses revealed the development of new semi-crystalline membrane structures, resulting in enhanced hexavalent chromium extraction. It was found that the presence of nanofillers altered the bulk structure, creating apparent microvoids in the membranes filled with 3% GO and the hybrid membrane, which were not observed in membranes filled with C30B. This resulted in higher extraction efficiency in the membranes loaded with GO, whereas membranes loaded with C30B exhibited decreased Cr(VI) extraction. An intermediate extraction percentage was found in the hybrid membrane filled with both nanofillers. Additionally, the incorporation of GO and C30B significantly improved membrane stability across various media, reducing mass loss in NaCl/NaOH to 13.36%. The TGA analyses further confirmed that membranes incorporating GO and C30B exhibited improved thermal stability.

Abstract:There are huge demands for the development of green, environmentally friendly, and easily prepared cationic adsorbents for treatment of chromium-contaminated water. In this research, we demonstrate the fabrication of a novel polyvinylamine-grafted polypropylene membrane (PPM-PVAm) for Cr(VI) adsorption. Based on a rapid two-step method, polypropylene membrane (PPM) was grafted with high biomedical safety N-vinylformamide (NVF), and then amino groups were generated via hydrolysis of the poly(N-vinylformamide) (PNVF) and these amino groups could be protonated under acidic condition as Cr(VI) adsorbing sites. The effects of both the PNVF grafting rate and its degree of hydrolysis on the adsorption performance of PPM-PVAm were investigated. The membrane with a PNVF grafting rate around 55% (wt) and a degree of hydrolysis around 70–80% exhibits the best performance for Cr(VI) adsorption under the optimal conditions, i.e. pH 2 at about 40 °C. The adsorption of Cr(VI) on PPM-PVAm matches the Langmuir model, showing a maximum Cr(VI) adsorption capacity of 208.3 mg per gram dry membrane. PPM-PVAm could be deprotonated under alkaline condition so the adsorbed Cr(VI) could be easily removed by NaOH/NaCl aqueous solution. The membrane shows excellent recycling performance, and 90.6% of the adsorption capability remains even after 10 cycles of adsorption-desorption test. Combining the unique performance and eco-friendly process in the fabrication of the membrane, PPM-PVAm shows great potential in adsorptive removal of Cr(VI) from water.

Abstract:Although the photocatalytic reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) by traditional powder photocatalysts is a promising method, the difficulty and poor recovery of photocatalysts from water hinder their wide practical applications. Herein, we present that FeC2O4/Bi2.15WO6 (FeC2O4/BWO) composites were tightly bonded to modified polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes by chemical grafting with the aid of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to form photocatalytic composite membranes (PVDF@PVA-FeC2O4/BWO). The contact angle of PVDF@PVA-FeC2O4/BWO (0.06 wt % of FeC2O4/BWO) is 48.0°, which is much lower than that of the pure PVDF membrane (80.5°). Meanwhile, the permeate flux of 61.43 g m-2 h-1 and water flux of 250.60 L m-2 h-1 were observed for PVDF@PVA-FeC2O4/BWO composite membranes. The tensile strength of composite membranes reached 48.84 MPa, which was 9.8 times higher than that of PVDF membrane. It was found that the PVDF@PVA-FeC2O4/BWO membrane exhibited excellent photocatalytic Cr(VI) reduction performance under both simulated and real sunlight irradiation. The adsorption for Cr(VI) by PVDF@PVA-FeC2O4/BWO can reach 47.6% in the dark process within 30 min, and the removal percentage of Cr(VI) could reach 100% with a rate constant k value of 0.2651 min-1 after 10 min of light exposure, indicating a synergistic effect of adsorption and photoreduction for Cr(VI) removal by the composite membrane. The PVDF@PVA-FeC2O4/BWO membrane had good stability and reusability after seven consecutive cycles. Most importantly, the influences of foreign ions on Cr(VI) reduction were investigated to mimic real sewage, which revealed that no obvious adverse effects can be found with the presence of common foreign ions in sewage. The photocatalytic membrane material developed in this study provides a new idea for treating Cr(VI)-containing wastewater and has a more significant application prospect.

Abstract:Hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) is one of the most toxic heavy metal ions. Therefore, the removal of this contaminant from wastewater is of particular importance. Herein, a novel zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-8) nanoparticles based electrospun polyacrylonitrile (PAN)/polyethylenimine (PEI) nanofibrous composite membranes (NCMs) were prepared and characterized by SEM, XRD, FTIR, TGA and other characterization techniques. The NCMs were tested for the adsorption of Cr(VI) from water. Results showed that the inclusion of PEI tailored the surface of the NCM to be superhydrophilic. The prepared electrospun NCM showed a high adsorption capacity for Cr(VI) (up to 403.5 mg·g −1 ) under ZIF-8 concentration of 5 wt%. More importantly, introducing ZIF-8 up to 5 % did not only increase the adsorption capacity but also enhanced the thermal stability, mechanical strength, and structure of the NCM. The experimental analysis of co-existing ions and the reusability of up to ten cycles showed that the optimized PAN/ NCM exhibited good selectivity and excellent stability for wastewater treatment. The adsorption kinetics followed the pseudo-second-order model and the adsorption isotherm could be fitted well by the Langmuir model. Thermodynamics revealed that the adsorption process was spontaneous and endothermic. The adsorption mechanism was found to be mainly electrostatic attraction and reduction. This study demonstrated the potential of ZIF-8-incorporated PAN/PEI NCMs for the removal of Cr(VI) from water.

Abstract:To effectively remove total Cr from wastewater, a novel composite membrane (PEI/MOF@PVDF) was successfully prepared by depositing UiO-66-NH2 and subsequently cross-linking with polyethylene imine (PEI) based on polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF). UiO-66-NH2 was mainly immobilized on the membrane surface and finger-like pore, which reduced the hydrophilicity and improve the surface positive charge, while the cross-linked PEI not only sufficiently covered this shortage but also enhanced the stability of membrane. PEI/MOF@PVDF owned such a high pure water flux as 561 L/(m(2).h), meanwhile the water flux of BSA-contaminated membrane could be restored to 96.13%. This is the first work focusing on the efficient co-removal of both Cr(VI) and Cr(III) with the novel positively charged UiO-66-NH2 decorated ultrafiltration membrane (PEI/MOF@PVDF). Interestingly, the effluent concentration of Cr(VI) was broke through at effective treatment volume of 2322.23 L/m(2) which was mainly charged by electrostatic attraction with the positive pores. And the effluent concentration of Cr(III) was consistently stable because of Donnan effect on the positive membrane. The EDS mapping revealed that Cr(VI) was preferentially adsorbed in the membrane pores for their high potential with highly concentrated UiO-66-NH2, while Cr(III) was mainly rejected on the positive surface. Moreover, PEI/MOF@PVDF showed negligible leakage of UiO-66-NH2 owing to the successful cross-link of PEI and the membrane can be easily regenerated and reused. Thus, the newly-developed composite membrane showed a promising potential for the efficient co-removal toward both Cr(VI) and Cr(III) in treating authentic wastewater.
Efficient removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater by ZnO-polyacrylic acid/cellulose fiber/polyethylene glycol hydrogel: Synergistic effect of adsorption and photocatalytic reduction

Abstract:A novel polyacrylic acid/carboxylated nanocellulose fiber/polyethylene glycol hydrogel loaded with nano-ZnO (ZnO-PAA/CNF/PEG: GH-2 (wt(ZnO)% = 12% and wt(PEG)% = 16%)) was synthesized to remove Cr(VI) from wastewater by adsorption synergistic photocatalytic reduction. The effects of ZnO content, PEG content and pH on the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) were investigated. The removal performance and mechanism of Cr(VI) by hydrogels were systematically studied by various techniques. The results showed that when the initial pH = 2, the initial concentration of Cr(VI) = 20 mg/L, the hydrogel dose = 0.5 g/L, and Irradiation power of mercury lamp was 500 W, the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) was 97.22% (dark adsorption for 60 min and photocatalysis for 50 min). The addition of PEG greatly reduced the agglomeration of nano-ZnO in GH-2 and facilitated the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. The adsorption process of Cr(VI) by GH-2 accords with pseudo-second-order kinetics. The photocatalytic process conforms to the pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the removal efficiency of Cr(VI) by GH-2 was still as high as 87.99% after 5 cycles. The removal mechanism of Cr(VI) was mainly through electrostatic attraction, chemical adsorption and photocatalytic reduction. This study provides a feasible method for the synthesis of hydrogel materials with excellent adsorption synergistic photocatalytic performance for the treatment of Cr(VI)-containing wastewater.

Abstract:In this work, a thorn ball-like three-dimensional (3D) heterostructured ZIF-67@α-MnO2 catalyst consisting of ZIF-67 nanocages impaled by α-MnO2 nanorods were robustly embedded in polyacrylonitrile nanofibers by electrospinning technique for highly efficient removal of low-molecular-weight pollutants (LMWPs, like dyes and antibiotics) from wastewater. Benefiting from abundant active sites and enhanced charge transfer abilities provided by ZIF-67@α-MnO2 nanoparticles, the optimal ZIF-67@α-MnO2 nanofibrous membranes (NFMs) showed a significant response towards acid fuchsin (AF) in terms of comparable adsorption capacity (2495 mg/g) and impressive catalytic activity (degradation degree of 99 % AF within 20 min). In addition, the resultant membranes possessed satisfactory versatile catalytic activity toward tetracycline (95.3 %), norfloxacin (98.4 %) and doxycycline hyclate (89.2 %). Besides, the resultant membranes had high permeability of 1302 L·m−2·h−1 driven by gravity and could efficiently treat 370.5 L·m−2 AF (20 ppm), which was significantly higher than that of pure ZIF-67 NFMs (141.8 L·m−2). The successful fabricating of such membrane with extraordinary adsorption and catalytic performance provided a promising approach for high-performance catalytic membranes.

Abstract:A novel core–shell magnetic nanomaterial is synthesized to adsorb highly toxic chromium (Cr(VI)) from water. Cobalt-based MOF (ZIF-67) is used as precursor to prepare magnetic nanoporous carbon (MNC) by one-step carbonization and etching process. Poly(m-phenylenediamine) (PmPD) is assembled on the surface of MNC by in-situ polymerization at low temperature. The magnetic with definite core-shell structure are successfully fabricated. The adsorption capacity of 2 for Cr(VI) can reach 240.44 mg·g-1, much higher than the bare MNC (126.27 mg·g-1). The core–shell structure improves the adsorption efficiency of the PmPD shell to 445.64 mg·g-1, compared with that of bare PmPD (332 mg·g-1). The 2 can be easily separated from the solution by the advantage of magnetic-core. Moreover, the prepared 2 exhibits high stability during adsorption with negligible Co leaching and structural decomposition. The mechanism of Cr(VI) removal is considered to be based on the synergistic effect of adsorption and reduction. The removal rate of Cr(VI) follows the pseudo-second-order model and the adsorption isotherm data fits well to the modified Langmuir isothermal model. The excellent adsorption capacity, easy magnetic separation and high structure stability indicate a promising application of for Cr(VI) remediation in wastewater.

Abstract:A novel magnetic composite with hierarchically porous nature is prepared by a facile synthetic strategy for the highly toxic chromium (Cr(VI)) removal. The magnetic NMPC@mSiO2 with defined mesoporous shell is successfully fabricated by one-step carbonization of ZIF-67@mSiO2, which is prepared through a simple one-pot method. Benefiting from the protection of mSiO2 during pyrolysis process, NMPC@mSiO2-800 owns high specific surface area, hierarchically porous structure and increased C–N content. It shows an excellent Cr(VI) removal performance with an adsorption capacity rising to 158.11 mg·g−1 from 78.60 mg·g−1 (NMPC-800). Moreover, the prepared NMPC@mSiO2-800 exhibits antijamming capability for Cl−1/SO4 2− with a negligible adverse impact on Cr(VI) removal. The kinetic studies show that the Cr(VI) removal on NMPC@mSiO2-800 confirms to pseudo-second-order model equipped with a relatively large adsorption rate constant, revealing the ability to quickly adsorb Cr(VI). The thermodynamic parameters manifest Cr(VI) adsorption is spontaneous and endothermic. Besides, the NMPC@mSiO2-800 can be quickly recovered from the system due to the magnetic porous carbon. Herein, NMPC@mSiO2-800 has a broad application prospect in Cr(VI) removal due to its excellent adsorption capacity, good antijamming ability, high adsorption rate and easy magnetic separation.

Abstract:This study effectively fabricated photocatalytic membranes (∼5 cm diameter) assembled by γ-AlOOH-PVA (BOP) decorated heterostructural ZIF-67/AgCl/Ag composites by combing seeded secondary growth and photoreduction methods. First, the ZIF-67-seeded BOP membrane was shaped in a petri dish, followed by submerging in a 2-methylimidazole ligand for secondary growth to obtain the BOP/ZIF-67 membrane. Next, AgCl/Ag was formulated on the membrane by dipping it in an AgNO3 solution, followed by a photoreduction under visible LED light, resulting in a BOP/ZIF/AgCl/Ag membrane. The characterization showed that the membrane contained heterostructures of ZIF-67/AgCl/Ag anchored onto the BOP membrane. The BOP/ZIF/AgCl/Ag composite membranes exhibited enhanced light absorption and appeared the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of Ag0, giving it a bandgap energy of ∼2.10 eV. Photodegradation under visible LED light irradiation showed that the BOP/ZIF/AgCl/Ag membrane efficiently removed tetracycline (TC) and Rhodamine B dye (RhB) with corresponding degradation efficiency of ∼99% (90 min) and ∼95% (140 min), giving reaction rates of ∼0.046 min-1 and 0.019 min-1, respectively. The photocatalytic mechanism and photodegradation pathways analyses provided insights into the degradations of organic pollutants. Significantly, the designed BOP/ZIF/AgCl/Ag membrane quickly recovered from the solution and was of good durability. The study provided an effective strategy for constructing heterostructural ZIF-67/AgCl/Ag composite membranes, which are efficient and eco-friendly photocatalyst materials.

Abstract:The design of high-efficiency adsorptive composites for selective removal of Cr(VI) ions with high capacity from aqueous solution remains great challenging owing to the complicated numerous co-existing ions. Herein, a novel type of Cr(VI) site-imprinted hollow composites (Cr(VI)-IIHS) with integrated sorption affinity, fast adsorption kinetics, capturing performance and high adsorption capacity was designed with aluminum-gelled carboxymethyl cellulose microspheres as starting substrate, Cr(VI) as the templated sites and polymeric PEI as modifying agent via a controllable glutaraldehyde cross-linking process. The adsorption of Cr(VI) over-designed Cr(VI)-IIHS could reach equilibrium within a relatively short time and the maximum adsorption capacity was 679.13 mg/g, which is the record-high adsorption results for Cr(VI) from water. Most importantly, the Cr(VI) adsorption over the Cr(VI)-IIHS remained a high level of recycling performance, for which beyond 530.91 mg/g can maintain even with six cycles of regeneration. The adsorption kinetics and equilibrium isotherms are in full agreement with the pseudo-second-order kinetic and Langmuir isotherm model, reflecting the monolayer chemisorption mechanism. By virtue of integrated features and controllable preparative process, this study might shed light on guidance for the construction of fascinating hollow adsorptive composites for remediation of emerging pollutants contaminated water-body.

Abstract:Catalytic membrane integrated with advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) was provided a promising prospect to overcome the obstacles of powder catalyst large-scale practical applications. Herein, we utilized a facile strategy to construct novel 3D sea urchin-like nitrogen doped carbon nanotube (CNT) frameworks encapsulated Co nanoparticles (ZIF-67/CNTs) through N-molecule assisted pyrolysis of ZIF-67, and then immobilized on poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membrane to obtain the catalytic membranes (ZIF-67/). As expected, benefiting from the strongly synergistic effect of high N-doping level, encapsulated 0D Co NPs, 1D N-CNTs and abundant x/pyridinic-N active sites and 3D porous structures, ZIF-67/CNTs-II achieved the best catalytic activity towards degrading bisphenol A (96.8%, 40 min and 0.0956 min−1), which was over 3 times higher than that of ZIF-67-derived ZIF-67/Cs (67.8%, 40 min and 0.0306 min−1). Furthermore, ZIF-67/ catalytic membrane not only exhibited the excellent catalytic ability in different pollutants/PMS system, but also maintained the desirable reusability and stability even after five runs. Notably, ZIF-67/CNTs-II as pore forming centers promoted the active sites exposure for oxidants and target pollutants. Scavenger experiments and EPR analysis verified that SO4−, OH and 1O2 participated the degradation process, while SO4− was the major active species. More significantly, this work provides a feasible pathway to fabricate novel catalytic membrane for environmental remediation.

Abstract:In this paper, ZIF-67/PP hybrid membrane (ZIF-67-N) is prepared by in situ synthesizing ZIF-67 on polymer membranes for rapid extraction of U (VI) from water. The effects of pH, contact time, and concentration of U (VI) on the adsorption of ZIF-67-N are investigated. The adsorption isotherm and kinetics analysis show an extremely high adsorption capacity of 1334.8 mg/g of ZIF-67-N which is 5.36 times higher than that of ZIF-67, and a rapid adsorption equlibrium of 20 min that is 12 times faster than ZIF-67. The adsorption process is consistent with the Freundlich isotherm equation and pseudo-second-order rate equation. ZIF-67-N also exhibits good selectivity for U (VI) in simulated seawater. The high adsorption performance of ZIF-67-N is attributed to the membrane structure that improves the utilization of coordination sites including Co-OH, C-N, and C N. To our knowledge, ZIF-67-N achieves the highest adsorption capacity among reported MOFs materials. This work provides a kind of efficient adsorption materials for rapid U (VI) extraction, which will be conducive to promoting the development of U (VI) extraction technology.

Abstract:The adsorption of toxic metal ions by composite materials of metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) has attracted significant attention in recent years. In this work, a series of hybrid materials HPAN@M−x consisting of protonated hyper-crosslinked aniline polymer (HPAN) and MOFs were synthesized via the Friedel-Crafts reaction between aniline and dimethoxymethane in the presence of MIL-101(Cr), followed by protonation with hydrogen bromide. These hybrid materials exhibited enhanced adsorption rate and capacity for Cr(VI) ions compared to both individual MIL-101(Cr) and HPAN. The effects of the ratio of aniline to MIL-101(Cr), solution pH, adsorption temperature, impurity ions on the removal of Cr(VI) ions were systematically investigated. Notably, HPAN@M−b not only achieved an adsorption capacity up to 290.9 mg·g −1 in 7 min but also exhibited excellent cycling stability by maintaining a high Cr(VI) removal efficiency of 95.6 % after five cycles. The enhanced adsorption performance is attributed to the synergistic effect between MIL-101(Cr) and HPAN. Mechanism studies indicated that the removal for Cr(VI) ions involved a combination of ion exchange and electrostatic adsorption processes. Additionally, the desorbed Cr(VI) ions were transformed into added-value barium chromate (BaCrO 4 ) precipitates, allowing for resource utilization of Cr(VI) ions. This study represents a significant advancement towards developing MOFs-based hybrid materials for practical treatment of chromium-containing wastewater.

Abstract:FeOOH has a large specific surface area and numerous active binding sites for Cr(VI), but it usually exists in the form of powder, being agglomerate easily and difficult for recycling after use. In this study, the in-situ generation of α-FeOOH and the shaping of CS spheres simultaneously happened in the mixed solution of 2 mol/L NaOH and 1 wt% of PEI, and then the rusultant spheres were crosslinked in 3 % glutaraldehyde solution to obtain the α-FeOOH loaded chitosan composite (α-FeOOH-PEI-CS). It had a connected three-dimensional reticular structuree, being easily separated. Under the optimal adsorption conditions (pH = 2.5, reaction temperature of 35 °C and adsorbent dosage of 0.5 g/L), the maximum adsorption capacity of the α-FeOOH-PEI-CS for Cr(VI) reached 250.63 mg/g. The adsorption process was consistent with the pseudo-second-order kinetic model, and intraparticle diffusion was the main rate-limiting step. In addition, the α-FeOOH-PEI-CS had good anti-interference and reusability. Coexisting anions and cations except SO 4 2− had no significant effect on the adsorption of Cr(VI), and the removal rate still maintained above 97 % after 5 cycles. The adsorption mechanism included electrostatic attraction, reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III) and chelation of Cr(III) by amino and carboxyl groups.

Abstract:Mass loading of functional particles on the surface of nanofibers is the key to efficient heavy metal treatment. However, it is still difficult to prepare nanofibers with a large number of functional particle loads on the surface simply and efficiently, which hinders the further improvement of performance and increases the cost. Here, a new one-step strategy was developed to maximize the adhesion of graphene oxide (GO) particle to the surface of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanofibers, which was combined with coaxial surface modification technology and blended electrospinning. The oxygen content on the as-prepared fiber surface increased from 0.44% to 9.32%, showing the maximized GO load. The increased adsorption sites and improved hydrophilicity greatly promoted the adsorption effect of Cr(VI). The adsorption capacity for Cr(VI) was 271 mg/g, and 99% removal rate could be achieved within 2 h for 20 mL Cr(VI) (100 mg/L), which was highly efficient. After five adsorption–desorption tests, the adsorption removal efficiency of the Cr(VI) maintained more than 80%, exhibiting excellent recycling performance. This simple method achieved maximum loading of functional particles on the fiber surface, realizing the efficient adsorption of heavy metal ions, which may promote the development of heavy-metal-polluted water treatment.

Abstract:Herein, composite nanofiber membranes (CNMs) derived from UiO-66 and UiO-66-NH2 Zr-metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) were successfully prepared, and they exhibited high performance in adsorptive fluoride removal from aqueous media. The resultant CNMs were confirmed using different techniques, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) in addition to Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The parameters that govern the fluoride adsorption were evaluated, including adsorbent dose, contact time, and pH value, in addition to initial concentration. The crystalline structures of CNMs exhibited high hydrothermal stability and remained intact after fluoride adsorption. It could also be observed that the adsorbent dose has a significant effect on fluoride removal at high alkaline values. The results show that UiO-66-NH2 CNM exhibited high fluoride removal due to electrostatic interactions that strongly existed between F− and metal sites in MOF in addition to hydrogen bonds formed with MOF amino groups. The fluoride removal efficiency reached 95% under optimal conditions of 20 mg L−1, pH of 8, and 40% adsorbent dose at 60 min. The results revealed that UiO-66-NH2 CNM possesses a high maximum adsorption capacity (95 mg L−1) over UiO-66 CNM (75 mg L−1), which exhibited better fitting with the pseudo-second-order model. Moreover, when the initial fluoride concentration increased from 20 to 100 mg/L, fluoride adsorption decreased by 57% (UiO-66 CNM) and 30% (UiO-66-NH2 CNM) after 60 min. After three cycles, CNM revealed the regeneration ability, demonstrating that UiO-66-NH2 CNMs are auspicious adsorbents for fluoride from an aqueous medium.
