Abstract:BACKGROUND:Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a chronic gastrointestinal disorder involving gut-brain interactions with limited effective treatment options. Vitamin D deficiency is commonly observed in patients with IBS, but whether vitamin D supplementation ameliorates IBS is controversial in randomized controlled trials. The present systematic review and meta-analysis explored the efficacy of vitamin D supplementation in patients with IBS. METHODS:We performed a systematic search of potentially relevant publications from PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Studies and the Web of Science up until January 2022. We assessed the weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence interval (95% CI) of the IBS severity scoring system (IBS-SSS), IBS quality of life (IBS-QoL) and IBS total score (IBS-TS) before and after vitamin D supplementation intervention. RESULTS:We included four randomized, placebo-controlled trials involving 335 participants. The differences in IBS-SSS score between participants in the intervention group and the placebo group increased after intervention (WMD: -55.55, 95% CI: -70.22 to -40.87, I2 = 53.7%, after intervention; WMD: -3.17, 95% CI: -18.15 to 11.81, I2 = 0.0%, before intervention). Participants receiving vitamin D supplementation showed greater improvement in IBS-SSS after intervention than participants receiving placebo treatment (WMD: -84.21, 95% CI: -111.38 to -57.05, I2 = 73.2%; WMD: -28.29, 95% CI: -49.95 to -6.62, I2 = 46.6%, respectively). Vitamin D supplementation was also superior to placebo in IBS-QoL improvement (WMD: 14.98, 95% CI: 12.06 to 17.90, I2 = 0.0%; WMD: 6.55, 95% CI: -2.23 to 15.33, I2 = 82.7%, respectively). Sensitivity analyses revealed an unstable pooled effect on IBS-TS in participants receiving vitamin D supplementation. Therefore, we did not evaluate the efficacy of vitamin D intervention in IBS-TS. CONCLUSIONS:This systematic review and meta-analysis suggested that vitamin D supplementation was superior to placebo for IBS treatment.

Abstract:Background & aims: Approximately 5%-10% of the population in most geographical regions suffer from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which creates a significant burden on individual patients, their families, and society. Recent advances in IBS therapies have indicated that vitamin D sup-plementation is potential to relieve its symptoms, but evidence of this is lacking. This meta-analysis aimed to estimate the effect of vitamin D on gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms in IBS patients. Methods: The PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials databases were searched from their inception to March 2022. Statistical analyses were performed with Stata 12.0 and Review Manager 5.4, and statistical significance was defined as P < 0.05. The pooled results are presented as weighted mean differences (WMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CI).Results: The meta-analysis including 6 randomized controlled trials (RCT) with 572 patients found a significant difference in IBS symptom severity score (WMD, -34.88; 95% CI,-62.48 to-7.27; P = 0.013; random-effects model) but no significant difference in IBS quality of life score (WMD, 3.33; 95% CI,-5.12 to-11.77; P = 0.440; random-effects model).Conclusions: Overall, IBS patients may benefit from vitamin D supplementation to reduce the GI symptoms.

Abstract:Vitamin D has an important role in bone metabolism but recently has been recognized as an immunoregulator, and this has led to investigations on the effect of Vitamin D supplementation in various autoimmune diseases and its anti-inflammatory effects. There is some evidence that Vitamin D can regulate gastrointestinal inflammation. In addition, previous studies have shown that Vitamin D can affect the gut microbiome. The aim of this review is to evaluate the effect of Vitamin D on inflammatory processes, especially its relation to the inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and gut microbiome. There is some evidence that Vitamin D can regulate gastrointestinal inflammation, with epidemiological studies showing that individuals with higher serum Vitamin D have a lower incidence of IBD, particularly Crohn's disease. Vitamin D changes transcription of cathelicidin and DEFB4 (defensin, beta 4) that can affect the gut microbiome. Several cell types of the immune system express Vitamin D receptor, and hence the use of Vitamin D in immune regulation has some potential. Furthermore, Vitamin D deficiency leads to dysbiosis of gut microbiome and reported to cause severe colitis. Vitamin D supplementation is low cost and available and can be a therapeutic option.

Abstract:It is well accepted that inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), including ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, is one of high risk factors for colorectal cancer (CRC). This supports the notion that inflammation plays a key role in cancer development. Epidemiologic studies have shown that vitamin D (Vit D) deficiency is associated with IBD and various types of cancer including colorectal cancer. Clinical trials and mouse models have shown that Vit D is beneficial in preventing or ameliorating inflammation and carcinogenesis. Mechanism studies show that Vit D played wide-spectrum roles in anti-inflammation, immunoregulation, and anti-cancer activities. In this review, we summarized and updated the findings on Vit D, IBD and colitis-associated colorectal cancer (CAC) with the emphasis on the effects of Vit D on anti-inflammation, EMT and cancer stem cells (CSC).

Abstract:Vitamin D has been linked to human health benefits that extend far beyond its established actions on calcium homeostasis and bone metabolism. One of the most well studied facets of extra-skeletal vitamin D is its activity as an immuno-modulator, in particular its potent anti-inflammatory effects. As a consequence, vitamin D deficiency has been associated with inflammatory diseases including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Low serum levels of the major circulating form of vitamin D, 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-OH-D) are significantly more prevalent in patients with IBD, particularly in the winter and spring months when UV-induced synthesis of vitamin D is lower. Dietary malabsorption of vitamin D may also contribute to low serum 25(OH)D in IBD. The benefits of supplementation with vitamin D for IBD patients are still unclear, and improved vitamin D status may help to prevent the onset of IBD as well as ameliorating disease severity. Beneficial effects of vitamin D in IBD are supported by pre-clinical studies, notably with mouse models, where the active form of vitamin D, 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D (1,25-(OH)2D) has been shown to regulate gastrointestinal microbiota function, and promote anti-inflammatory, tolerogenic immune responses. The current narrative review aims to summarise the different strands of data linking vitamin D and IBD, whilst also outlining the possible beneficial effects of vitamin D supplementation in managing IBD in humans.

Abstract:Vitamin D deficiency is commonly diagnosed among patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Patients with IBD are at risk of low bone density and increased fractures due to low vitamin D levels, long standing disease, and frequent steroid exposures; as a result, it is well established that vitamin D supplementation in this population is important. There is increasing support for the role of vitamin D in strengthening the innate immune system by acting as an immunomodulator and reducing inflammation in experimental and human IBD. The active form of vitamin D, 1,25(OH)D3, acts on T cells to promote T helper (Th)2/regulatory T responses over Th1/Th17 responses; suppresses dendritic cell inflammatory activity; induces antibacterial activity; and regulates cytokine production in favor of an anti-inflammatory response. Murine and human IBD studies support a therapeutic role of vitamin D in IBD. Risk factors for vitamin D deficiency in this population include decreased sunlight exposure, disease duration, smoking, and genetics. Vitamin D normalization is associated with reduced risk of relapse, reduced risk of IBD-related surgeries, and improvement in quality of life. Vitamin D is an inexpensive supplement which has been shown to improve IBD outcomes. However, further research is required to determine optimal serum vitamin D levels which will achieve beneficial immune effects, and stronger evidence is needed to support the role of vitamin D in inducing disease response and remission, as well as maintaining this improvement in patients' disease states.

[Association between vitamin D and inflammatory bowel diseases]

Abstract:Vitamin D is a hormone known for a long time, for its effects on bone health and the regulation of phosphorus and calcium metabolism. Since the discovery of receptors for this molecule in a large number of cells in the body, the field has been opened for the study of its effects on the immune system. Its relationships with the cells of the immune system, genes, and microbiota cause great interest in relation to immune-mediated diseases. Many data indicates that this vitamin has preventive, modulating and controlling effects of the adverse effects of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (IBD) on bone health, although it is difficult to definitively demonstrate causality. In this review, we try to summarize the current situation and controversial issues in this interesting field, focusing on inflammatory bowel diseases.
The Effect of Probiotics on Treatments in Patients Affected by Inflammatory Bowel Disease: A Systematic Review

Abstract:Background: Gut dysbiosis has been associated with development and progression of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Over the last two decades, many publications have focused on the role of probiotics in IBD. However, studies regarding the treatment of IBD with probiotics have not yielded consistent results. Objective: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of probiotics in IBD therapy. Results: A total of seven studies met the criteria and were included in the meta-analysis, which included 879 participants. We finally selected five endpoints to evaluate the efficacy of probiotics, 3 indicators showed the statistical difference, including C-reactive protein (CRP)(OR: -2.45, 95% CI: -3.16, -1.73, P< 0.01), the number of fecal Bifidobacterium (OR: 3.37, 95%CI: 3.28, 3.47, P< 0.01) and Lactobacillus(OR: 2.00, 95%CI: 1.91, 2.09, P< 0.01) . The other two indicators including the disease activity of Crohn’s Disease (CD) (OR: -0.17, 95%CI: -1.46, 1.12, P=0.80) and ulcerative colitis(UC) (OR: -0.31, 95%CI: -1.36, 0.74, P=0.56) showed no statistical difference, while the OR reflected the beneficial relationship between probiotics and IBD. Conclusion: Supplementation of probiotics can improve clinical symptoms in IBD patients, reduce the serological inflammation level, and regulate the intestinal microenvironment, but more RCTs are needed.

Abstract:Vitamin D has traditionally been known for its role in bone metabolism, but emerging evidence has suggested a broader role for vitamin D in immune regulation. Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with the pathogenesis of diverse autoimmune disorders and has similarly been implicated as a contributor to inflammatory bowel disease. In this review, we discuss animal, in vitro, genetic, and epidemiologic studies that have linked vitamin D deficiency with inflammatory bowel disease pathogenesis or severity. Nonetheless, we present the caveat in interpreting these studies in the context of reverse causation: Does vitamin D deficiency lead to gastrointestinal disease, or does gastrointestinal disease (with related changes in dietary choices, intestinal absorption, nutritional status, lifestyle) lead to vitamin D deficiency?

Abstract:Vitamin D as a prohormone is converted into the active form in vivo and binds to vitamin D receptors, exercising a wide range of biological functions. Recent studies strongly support that vitamin D supplementation is associated with reduced cancer risk and a good prognosis. Gastrointestinal cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths worldwide. The key role of vitamin D in the development of gastrointestinal cancer has been observed. Moreover, Vitamin D can also affect innate immunity and perform anti-inflammation and anti-infection actions. Given the intimate relationship between cancer and inflammation, we herein summarize epidemiological and preclinical studies of vitamin D and the underlying mechanism of its action in inflammation, gastric and colorectal cancer by our group and other researchers. A beneficial effect of vitamin D in cancer and inflammatory disease has been supported by different studies. More controlled and larger clinical trials are needed before a reliable conclusion and realization of vitamin D supplementation in the adjunct treatment of gastrointestinal inflammation and cancer.

However, recent scientific advancements have unveiled its intricate association with gut health. The intestinal barrier serves as a vital component, safeguarding the intestinal milieu and maintaining overall homeostasis. Deficiencies in vitamin D have been implicated in altering the gut microbiome composition, compromising the integrity of the intestinal mucosal barrier, and predisposing individuals to various intestinal pathologies. Vitamin D exerts its regulatory function by binding to vitamin D receptors (VDR) present in immune cells, thereby modulating the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and influencing the intestinal barrier function. Notably, numerous studies have reported lower serum vitamin D levels among patients suffering from intestinal diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and celiac disease, highlighting the growing significance of vitamin D in gut health maintenance. This comprehensive review delves into the latest advancements in understanding the mechanistic role of vitamin D in modulating the gut microbiome and intestinal barrier function, emphasizing its pivotal role in immune regulation. Furthermore, we consolidate and present relevant findings pertaining to the therapeutic potential of vitamin D in the management of intestinal diseases.
Association between vitamin D level and pediatric inflammatory bowel disease: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Abstract:Background: Previous studies have reported that the incidence of pediatric inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is related to vitamin D, but it is still unclear. This study intends to calculate the relationship between pediatric IBD and vitamin D. Methods: A comprehensive literature search from inception to January 2023 was performed in the PubMed, EMBASE, Medline, Web of Science, and Google Scholar databases. Relevant data were extracted as required and used for subsequent calculations. Results: Sixteen papers were included, and there was no significant difference between the average vitamin D level in IBD patients and healthy controls. In addition, the overall pooled results showed that C-reactive protein (CRP) was 2.65 higher before vitamin D supplementation than after supplementation [SMD = 2.65, 95% CI = (2.26, 3.04)]. Moreover, patients with IBD in remission were 0.72 higher before vitamin D supplementation than after supplementation [OR = 0.72, 95% CI = (0.52, 1.00)]. Conclusion: This study suggested that there was no obvious relationship between pediatric IBD and vitamin D, while vitamin D supplementation can improve disease activity. Therefore, follow-up still needs many prospective studies to confirm the relationship between pediatric IBD and vitamin D.

Vitamin D Modulates Intestinal Microbiota in Inflammatory Bowel Diseases

Abstract:Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT), including Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC), which differ in the location and lesion extensions. Both diseases are associated with microbiota dysbiosis, with a reduced population of butyrate-producing species, abnormal inflammatory response, and micronutrient deficiency (e.g., vitamin D hypovitaminosis). Vitamin D (VitD) is involved in immune cell differentiation, gut microbiota modulation, gene transcription, and barrier integrity. Vitamin D receptor (VDR) regulates the biological actions of the active VitD (1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3), and is involved in the genetic, environmental, immune, and microbial aspects of IBD. VitD deficiency is correlated with disease activity and its administration targeting a concentration of 30 ng/mL may have the potential to reduce disease activity. Moreover, VDR regulates functions of T cells and Paneth cells and modulates release of antimicrobial peptides in gut microbiota-host interactions. Meanwhile, beneficial microbial metabolites, e.g., butyrate, upregulate the VDR signaling. In this review, we summarize the clinical progress and mechanism studies on VitD/VDR related to gut microbiota modulation in IBD. We also discuss epigenetics in IBD and the probiotic regulation of VDR. Furthermore, we discuss the existing challenges and future directions. There is a lack of well-designed clinical trials exploring the appropriate dose and the influence of gender, age, ethnicity, genetics, microbiome, and metabolic disorders in IBD subtypes. To move forward, we need well-designed therapeutic studies to examine whether enhanced vitamin D will restore functions of VDR and microbiome in inhibiting chronic inflammation.

Abstract:BACKGROUND AND AIMIrritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a prevalent and complex gastrointestinal disorder characterized by chronic abdominal pain and altered bowel habits. Observational studies have suggested a relationship between serum Vitamin D levels and IBS symptoms. This systematic review and meta‐analysis aimed to investigate the clinical effects of Vitamin D supplementation on IBS symptom severity and quality of life measures.METHODSMedline, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and The Cochrane Library databases were systematically searched. Data abstraction and quality assessment were conducted by four authors independently and discrepancies were resolved through consensus from the senior author. Continuous data were pooled with standardized mean difference (SMD) using the DerSimonian and Laird's random‐effects model. Sensitivity analysis by risk of bias and potentially 'predatory' publication were performed as wellRESULTSA total of 685 patients across eight studies were included in the meta‐analysis. Vitamin D supplementation significantly improved IBS Symptom Severity Scale (IBS‐SSS) scores, with a SMD of ‐0.77 (95% CI ‐1.47 to ‐0.07, p = 0.04, I2 = 91%). Improvements in IBS‐QOL scores were also observed, albeit not statistically significant (SMD 0.54; 95% CI ‐0.34 to 1.41, p = 0.15, I2 = 87%). However, small sample sizes, a relatively young study population, limited ethnicities and varied Vitamin D dosing strategies across the studies were notable limitations.CONCLUSIONSVitamin D supplementation could be part of our clinical armamentarium when managing IBS patients due to the potential efficacy and good safety profile. Further randomized, controlled trials are required to confirm the therapeutic effects.

Association between 25(OH)D Level, Ultraviolet Exposure, Geographical Location, and Inflammatory Bowel Disease Activity: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Abstract:Background: There is no consensus on the vitamin D levels and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Aim: To conduct a systematic review and meta-analysis to analyze the relationship between IBD and 25(OH)D, sun exposure, and latitude, and to determine whether vitamin D deficiency affects the severity of IBD. Methods: We searched the PubMed, EBSCO, and ClinicalTrials.gov databases to identify all studies that assessed the association between 25(OH)D, sun exposure, latitude, and IBD through November 1, 2014, without language restrictions. Studies that compared 25(OH)D levels between IBD patients and controls were selected for inclusion in the meta-analysis. We calculated pooled standardized mean differences (SMDs) and odds ratios (ORs). Results: Thirteen case-control studies investigating CD and 25(OH)D levels were included, and eight studies part of above studies also investigated the relationship between UC and 25(OH)D. Both CD patients (SMD: 0.26 nmol/L, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.09-0.42 nmol/L) and UC patients (SMD: 0.5 nmol/L, 95% CI: 0.15-0.85 nmol/L) had lower levels of 25(OH)D than controls. In addition, CD patients and UC patients were 1.95 times (OR, 1.95; 95% CI, 1.48-2.57) and 2.02 times (OR, 2.02; 95% CI, 1.13-3.60) more likely to be 25(OH)D deficient than controls. We also included 10 studies investigating the relationship between CD activity and vitamin D. Results showed that patients with active CD (CD Activity Index ≥ 150) were more likely to have low vitamin D levels. In addition, whether low sun exposure and high latitude were related to a high morbidity of CD need to be provided more evidence. Conclusion: Our study shows that IBD patients have lower vitamin D levels. For active CD patients, vitamin D levels were low. These findings suggest that vitamin D may play an important role in the development of IBD, although a direct association could not be determined in our study.

In this study, mice were intraperitoneally injected with lipopolysaccharide (LPS) to create a systemic inflammation model and received vitamin D3 treatment orally for 18 continuous days. Then, body weight, morphological changes in the colon epithelium, and gut microbiota (n = 3) were evaluated. We verified that LPS stimulation caused inflammatory changes in the colon epithelium, which could be obviously attenuated by vitamin D3 treatment (10 μg/kg/day) in mice. Then, 16S rRNA gene sequencing of the gut microbiota first revealed that LPS stimulation induced a large number of operational taxonomic units, and vitamin D3 treatment reduced the number. In addition, vitamin D3 had distinctive effects on the community structure of the gut microbiota, which was obviously changed after LPS stimulation. However, neither LPS nor vitamin D3 affected the alpha and beta diversity of the gut microbiota. Furthermore, statistical analysis of differential microorganisms showed that the relative abundance of microorganisms in the phylum Spirochaetes decreased, the family Micrococcaceae increased, the genus [Eubacterium]_brachy_group decreased, the genus Pseudarthrobacter increased, and the species Clostridiales_bacterium_CIEAF_020 decreased under LPS stimulation, but vitamin D3 treatment significantly reversed the LPS-induced changes in the relative abundance of these microorganisms. In conclusion, vitamin D3 treatment affected the gut microbiota and alleviated inflammatory changes in the colon epithelium in the LPS-stimulated systemic inflammation mouse model.

Abstract:Abstract In this systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs), the effects of vitamin D supplementation on biomarkers of inflammation and oxidative stress in diabetic patients are summarized. The following databases were searched up to December 2017: MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. The quality of the relevant extracted data was assessed according to the Cochrane risk of bias tool. Data were pooled using the inverse variance method and expressed as mean difference with 95% Confidence Intervals (95% CI). Heterogeneity between studies was assessed by the Cochran Q statistic and I-squared tests (I2). Overall, 33 studies were included in the meta-analyses. Vitamin D supplementation were found to significantly reduce serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) (WMD 0.27; 95% CI, – 0.35, – 0.20; p<0.001) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels (WMD – 0.43, 95% CI – 0.62, – 0.25, p<0.001) in diabetic patients. In addition, vitamin D supplementation were found to increase markers of nitric oxide (NO) release (WMD 4.33, 95% CI 0.96, 7.70), total serum antioxidant capacity (TAC) (WMD 57.34, 95% CI 33.48, 81.20, p<0.001) and total glutathione (GSH) levels (WMD 82.59, 95% CI 44.37, 120.81, p<0.001). Overall, this meta-analysis shows that in diabetic patients, taking vitamin D had significant effects on hs-CRP and MDA levels, and significantly increased NO, TAC and GSH levels.

Abstract:The 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25OHD3) deficiency in Crohn's disease (CD) is associated with the immune system dysfunction and redox status alteration. These two events affect intestinal mucosal function through macrophages cells infiltration and to lead a pro-inflammatory cytokines storm and ROS (reactive oxygen species) overproduction. The objective of this study was to investigate the immunomodulatory and antioxidant effects of vitamin D3 supplementation (DS3) in clinical active phase. A cohort of 262 CD patients and vitamin D deficient (< 50 nmol/L or < 20 ng/mL) was randomized into 2 groups according to the DS3 doses at 200,000 IU/month (D200 group) versus 6,000 IU/day (D6 group). Serum 25OHD3 levels were assessed before and after 6 and 12 months of DS3. The clinical active phase was characterized by the CDAI score (Crohn's Disease Activity Index) and the fecal calprotectin assay. The 25OHD3 profile was analyzed by LC-MS/MS. The pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNFα, IL-6, IL-12, IL-17, IL-23) were assessed by ELISA tests. The serum trace elements (Se, Mn, Cu, Zn) was determined by mass spectrometry. The antioxidant status (TAS, SOD, GPx, GSH) was evaluated by Randox kits. The results showed that the serum 25OHD3 concentrations became normal (> 75 nmol/L or > 30 ng/mL) in the 2 groups. Our data showed that vitamin D supplementation allowed the clinical remission phase. The DS3 decreased serum levels of CRPus, TNFα, IL-17 and IL-23. The DS3 modulates the trace elements ratio and increased the SOD and GPx activities. The DS3 corrects the denutrition state. The vitamin D supplementation benefits are more significant in D6 group (continuous 6,000 IU/day) than in D200 group (intermittent 200,000 IU/month). Our study suggests that the serum 25OHD3 profile can be considered a reliable biomarker in the bioclinic CD evolution to prevent the active phase, to extend the remission phase and to avoid the surgical bowel resection.

Abstract:Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) are classified under inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) which has been linked to a multifaceted etiology involving both environmental and genetic factors that intersect with the vitamin D pathway. Dysfunctions in innate immune defense mechanisms in the epithelial compartment of the intestine play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of IBD. Symptoms of IBD are caused by excessive immune responses to luminal bacteria, and vitamin D has been shown to play a role in intestinal defense by aiding in the suppression of microbial invasion into the epithelium. Vitamin D, as an immunomodulator, can modify the innate immune response of the body. Vitamin D attenuates the transcription of pro-inflammatory cytokines that are upregulated in the event of epithelial stress common in patients with IBD. Vitamin D deficiency was identified in 82% of IBD patients compared to the 31% national average and has been linked to defective epithelial processes at both genomic and proteomic levels. Mucosal damage and an impaired immune response are at the center of IBD, and vitamin D aids in sustaining the structural integrity of epithelial cells while enhancing innate immune responses in the mucosa. Here we provide a systematic review of the pathophysiological effects of cytokines in IBD in the presence of vitamin D deficiency. Also, analysis of the immunomodulatory effect of vitamin D in regulating immunopathogenic factors like chemokines, growth factors, and human defensins will enhance knowledge of the underlying molecular mechanisms of the therapeutic role of vitamin D in IBD and thus aid in the development of better patient management strategies.

Abstract:The interactions among diet, intestinal immunity, and microbiota are complex and play contradictory roles in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). An increasing number of studies has shed light on this field. The intestinal immune balance is disrupted by a high-fat diet (HFD) in several ways, such as impairing the intestinal barrier, influencing immune cells, and altering the gut microbiota. In contrast, a rational diet is thought to maintain intestinal immunity by regulating gut microbiota. In this review, we emphasize the crucial contributions made by an HFD to the gut immune system and microbiota.
