Abstract:While small drone video streaming systems create unprecedented video content, they also place a power burden exceeding 20% on the drone's battery, limiting flight endurance. We present Mighty, a hardware-software solution to minimize the power consumption of a drone's video streaming system by offloading power overheads associated with both video compression and transmission to a ground controller. Mighty innovates a high performance co-design among: (1) a ring oscillator-based, ultra-low power backscatter radio; (2) a spectrally-efficient, non-linear, low-power physical layer modulation and multi-chain radio architecture; and (3) a lightweight video compression codec-bypassing software design. Our co-design exploits synergies among these components, resulting in joint throughput and range performance that pushes the known envelope. We prototype Mighty on PCB board and conduct extensive field studies both indoors and outdoors. The power efficiency of Mighty is about 16.6 nJ/bit. A head-to-head comparison with a DJI Mini2 drone's default video streaming system shows that Mighty achieves similar throughput at a drone-to-controller distance of up to 150 meters, with 34–55× improvement of power efficiency than WiFi-based video streaming solutions.
Aerial Base Stations Deployment in 6G Cellular Networks using Tethered Drones: The Mobility and Endurance Trade-off

Abstract:Airborne base stations (carried by drones) have a great potential to enhance coverage and capacity of cellular networks. Multiple scenarios and use cases will highly benefit from such technology such as (i) offloading terrestrial base stations (BSs) in dense and urban areas, and (ii) providing coverage for rural areas. However, one of the main challenges facing the deployment of airborne BSs is the limited available energy at the drone, which limits the flight time. In fact, most of the currently used unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) can only operate for one hour maximum. This limits the performance of the UAV-enabled cellular network due to the need to frequently visit the ground station to recharge, leaving the UAV's coverage area temporarily out of service. In this article, we propose a new UAV-enabled cellular network setup based on tethered UAVs (TUAVs). In the proposed setup, the TUAV is connected to a ground station (GS) through a tether, which provides the TUAV with both energy and data. This enables a flight that can stay for days. We describe in detail the components of the proposed system. Furthermore, we enlist the main advantages of a TUAV-enabled cellular network compared to typical untethered UAVs. Next, we discuss the potential applications and use cases for TUAVs. Finally, we discuss the challenges, design considerations, and future research directions to realize the proposed setup.

Abstract:Due to Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) limitations in processing power and battery lifetime. The tethered UAV (TUAV) offers an attractive approach to answer these shortcomings. Since a tethered connected to UAV is one potential energy solution to provide a stable power supply that connects to the ground would achieve impressive performances in smart environments and disaster recovery. The proposed solution is intended to provide stable energy and increase the coverage area of TUAV for smart environments and disaster recovery. This paper proposed that the tethered connected to UAV will provide the continuous supply and exchange the data with ground terminals. Besides the adjustable tether length, elevation angels act to increase the hovering region, leading to the scalability of coverage in many applications. Moreover, the power consumption and transmission the distance while achieving a trade-off between the hovering and coverage probabilities. The simulation results demonstrate efficient performance in terms of line-of-sight probability, path loss, and coverage probability for scalability coverage smart environments and disaster recovery scenarios. Furthermore, maximum coverage probability is achieved versus increased tethered length because of the gain and fly over a region of maximum tethered.

Tethered Power for a Series of Quadcopters: Analysis and Applications

Abstract:Tethered quadcopters are used for extended flight operations where the power to the system is provided via a tether connected to an external power source. In this work, we consider a system of multiple quadcopters powered by a single tether. We study the design factors that influence the power requirements, such as the electrical resistance of the tether, input voltage, and quadcopters' positions. We present an analysis to predict the required power to be supplied to a series of N tethered quadcopters, with respect to the thrust of each quadcopter which guarantees electrical safety and helps in design optimization. We find that there is a critical boundary of thrusts that cannot be exceeded due to fundamental electrical limitations. We compare the power consumption for one tethered quadcopter and two tethered quadcopters and show that for large quadcopters far enough from the anchor point, a two-quadcopter system consumes lesser power. We show that, for a representative use case of firefighting, a tethered system with two quadcopters consumes 26% less power than a corresponding system with one quadcopter. Finally, we present experiments demonstrating the use of a two-quadcopter tethered system as compared to a one-quadcopter tethered system in a cluttered environment, such as passing through a window and grasping an object over an obstacle.

Abstract:The emergence of tethered drones represents a major advancement in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) offering solutions to key limitations faced by traditional drones. This article explores the potential of tethered drones with a particular focus on their ability to tackle issues related to battery life constraints and data latency commonly experienced by battery operated drones. Through their connection to a ground station via a tether, autonomous tethered drones provide continuous power supply and a secure direct data transmission link facilitating prolonged operational durations and real time data transfer. These attributes significantly enhance the effectiveness and dependability of drone missions in scenarios requiring extended surveillance, continuous monitoring and immediate data processing needs. Examining the advancements, operational benefits and potential future progressions associated with tethered drones, this article shows their increasing significance across various sectors and their pivotal role in pushing the boundaries of current UAV capabilities. The emergence of tethered drone technology not only addresses existing obstacles but also paves the way for new innovations within the UAV industry.

Abstract:Currently various types of aircraft booming and maturing, however, their long-time navigational capability should be improved urgently. This paper aims at studying laser power beaming, which includes the technology of high-efficient photoelectric conversion and APT( acquiring, pointing and tracking) technology, to provide power for flying UAV( unmanned aerial vehicles) and improve their flight endurance.The experiment of testing different types of solar cells under various conditions has been done to choose the solar cell which has the highest photoelectric conversion rate and find its most sensitive wavelength. In addition, the charge management module has been chose on the base of the characteristics of lithium batteries. Besides, a laser APT system was designed and set up, at the same time FSM ( Fast Scan Mirror) control program and digital image processing program were used to control the system. The success of the indoor experiment of scan-tracking and charging for the moving UAV model via laser proves that this system is workable. And in this experiment, the photoelectric conversion rate of the whole system is up to 17.55%.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a novel energy-efficient data collection and wireless power transfer (WPT) framework for internet of things (IoT) applications, via a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) full-duplex (FD) unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). To exploit the benefits of UAV-enabled WPT and MIMO FD communications, we allow the MIMO FD UAV charge low-power IoT devices while at the same time collect data from them. With the aim of saving the total energy consumed at the UAV, we formulate an energy minimization problem by taking the FD hardware impairments, the number of uploaded data bits, and the energy harvesting causality into account. Due to the non-convexity of the problem in terms of UAV trajectory and transmit beamforming for WPT, tracking the global optimality is quite challenge. Alternatively, we find a local optimal point by implementing the proposed iterative search algorithm combining with successive convex approximation techniques. Numerical results show that the proposed approach can lead to superior performance compared with other benchmark schemes with low computational complexity and fast convergence.

Abstract:The mission of an unmanned air vehicle (UAV) tethered to a small unmanned surface vehicle (USV) is considered. As opposed to the majority of existing tethered UAV work, which assumes a taut tether, this paper addresses the challenge of tether management for a slack, hanging tether in a dynamic ocean environment up to sea state 4 on the Douglas scale. A prototype smart reel system for a UAV–USV team was designed and experimentally validated in controlled and uncontrolled dynamic environments. A reference model for tether control based on static catenary cable theory was extended and shown to be valid through the entire operational envelop. A Kalman filter was developed to fuse slow (4 Hz) differential GPS (dGPS) relative position measurements with fast (100 Hz) inertial measurements, to output a 100 Hz estimate of relative position, relative velocity, and inertial sensor bias. A relative velocity‐based gain‐scheduled proportional‐derivative (PD) controller was developed, and demonstrated robustness to heave, pitch, and roll motion of the USV. Experimental testing with a UAV surrogate showed successful decoupling of heave motion from the UAV altitude in a controlled indoor environment. Taut tether control, in contrast, exhibited 12 times more tether tension at the UAV compared to the controller proposed here. The performance of the tuned controller with feedback from the Kalman filter exhibited minimal deviation from static catenary cable theory during the dynamic experiments. Indoor flight testing showed the developed reference model and controller essentially decoupled the dynamic motion of the USV from that of the UAV; the measured deflections of the UAV altitude and position essentially matched that of untethered flight. Outdoor flights validated the effectiveness of the controller in an unknown dynamic environment, for a larger relative position between the UAV and USV, using the dGPS Kalman filter solution to measure relative position. Initial experimental results look promising for continued on‐water testing of hanging‐tether UAV/USV teams.

Abstract:This paper presents a novel approach of wireless power transfer for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with the assistance of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS). The optimal energy beamforming at the power station, passive phase adjustment at the RIS, and the harvested energy of the UAVs are discussed. Then, the wireless power transfer efficiency of a two-UAV case is investigated, as well as the optimal position of the RIS. In addition, the minimum RIS scale that guarantees a power transfer efficiency gain over the traditional system without RIS is analyzed. The effectiveness of the proposed scheme is verified by simulation results. It is shown that the RIS has potential advantages in improving the PTE comparing with the traditional system without RIS, but a certain requirement on the RIS scale.

Alternatively, we exploit a local optimal solution by implementing the proposed fixed-point search combining with successive convex approximation algorithm. In comparison to benchmark schemes, our results illustrate superior performances especially when the hardware impairment effects are taken into account. In addition, the proposed iterative algorithm exhibits fast convergence and fairly low computational complexity.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled wireless power transfer (WPT) has recently emerged as a promising technique to provide sustainable energy supply for widely distributed low-power ground devices (GDs) in large-scale wireless networks. Compared with the energy transmitters (ETs) in conventional WPT systems which are deployed at fixed locations, UAV-mounted aerial ETs can fly flexibly in the three-dimensional (3D) space to charge nearby GDs more efficiently. This paper provides a tutorial overview on UAV-enabled WPT and its appealing applications, in particular focusing on how to exploit UAVs' controllable mobility via their 3D trajectory design to maximize the amounts of energy transferred to all GDs in a wireless network with fairness. First, we consider the single-UAV-enabled WPT scenario with one UAV wirelessly charging multiple GDs at known locations. To solve the energy maximization problem in this case, we present a general trajectory design framework consisting of three innovative approaches to optimize the UAV trajectory, which are multi-location hovering, successive-hover-and-fly, and time-quantization-based optimization, respectively. Next, we consider the multi-UAV-enabled WPT scenario where multiple UAVs cooperatively charge many GDs in a large area. Building upon the single-UAV trajectory design, we propose two efficient schemes to jointly optimize multiple UAVs' trajectories, based on the principles of UAV swarming and GD clustering, respectively. Furthermore, we consider two important extensions of UAV-enabled WPT, namely UAV-enabled wireless powered communication networks (WPCN) and UAV-enabled wireless powered mobile edge computing (MEC).

Abstract:Autonomy of devices is a major challenge in many Internet of Things (IoT) applications, in particular when the nodes are deployed remotely or difficult to assess places. In this paper we present an approach to provide energy to these devices by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Therefore, the two major challenges, finding and charging the node are presented. We propose a model to give the energy constrained node an unlimited autonomy by taken the Wireless Power Transfer (WPT) link and battery capacity into account. Selecting the most suitable battery technology allows a reduction in battery capacity and waste. Moreover, an upgrade of existing IoT nodes is feasible with a limited impact on the design and form factor.

Abstract:Objectives . Currently, UAVs are actively used in many military and civilian fields such as object surveillance, telecommunications, radar, photography, video recording, and mapping, etc. The main disadvantage of autonomous UAVs is their limited operating time. The long-term operation of UAVs on ships can be ensured by tethered high-altitude systems in which the power supply of engines and equipment is provided from the onboard energy source through a thin cable tether. This paper aims to select and justify the appearance of such system, as well as to calculate the required performance characteristics. Methods . The study used methods of systemic and functional analysis of tethered system parameters, as well as methods and models of the theory of relations and measurement. Results . The issues of design and implementation of new generation tethered high-altitude ship-based systems were considered. A rational type of aerodynamic design for unmanned aerial vehicles was determined based on existing tethered platforms. The optimal architecture of the tethered system was defined and justified. The paper presents the appearance and solution for placement onboard the ship, and describes its operation. The main initial parameters for designing high-altitude systems such as take-off weight, optimal lift altitude, maximum power required for operation, structure of the energy transfer system, as well as deployment and lift time to the design altitude were selected and calculated. Conclusions . The methodology for calculating the necessary characteristics described in the paper can be used for developing and evaluating tethered high-altitude systems. These systems are capable of performing a wide range of tasks, without requiring a separate storage and launch location, which is especially important in the ship environment. The system presented herein possesses significant advantages over well-known analogues.

Abstract:Wireless power transfer (WPT) is a promising charging technology for battery-limited sensors. In this paper, we study the use of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) as a charger for WPT. Unlike the previous works, our study takes into account the power consumption of the UAV (power consumption during hovering and flight), the charging process from a base station (BS) to the UAV and the conversion loss of the energy harvester. Both one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) WPT systems are considered. The sum-energy received by all sensors is maximized to find the optimal strategy for UAV deployment. Two different charging schemes are proposed. Numerical results show that the sum-energy received by all sensors is determined by sensors' topology, the flight speed of the UAV and the transmit power. They also show that, when the BS charging process and the UAV power consumption are considered in the optimization, the optimal location of the UAV in the 1D and 2D WPT systems is closer to the BS than in the previous works that ignore these two practical factors.

Abstract:This paper studies a new unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled wireless power transfer (WPT) system, where a UAV-mounted energy transmitter (ET) broadcasts wireless energy to charge distributed energy receivers (ERs) on the ground. In particular, we consider a basic two-user scenario, and investigate how the UAV can optimally exploit its mobility to maximize the amount of energy transferred to the two ERs during a given charging period. We characterize the achievable energy region of the two ERs, by optimizing the UAV's trajectory subject to a maximum speed constraint. We show that when the distance between the two ERs is smaller than a certain threshold, the boundary of the energy region is achieved when the UAV hovers above a fixed location between them for all time; while when their distance is larger than the threshold, to achieve the boundary of the energy region, the UAV in general needs to hover and fly between two different locations above the line connecting them. Numerical results show that the optimized UAV trajectory can significantly improve the WPT efficiency and fairness of the two ERs, especially when the UAV's maximum speed is large and/or the charging duration is long.

Abstract:Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have the potential to overcome the deployment constraint of Internet of Things (IoT) in remote or rural area. Wirelessly powered communications (WPC) can address the battery limitation of IoT devices through transferring wireless power to IoT devices. The integration of UAVs and WPC, namely UAV-enabled Wireless Powering IoT (Ue-WPIoT) can greatly extend the IoT applications from cities to remote or rural areas. In this article, we present a state-of-the-art overview of Ue-WPIoT by first illustrating the working flow of Ue-WPIoT and discussing the challenges. We then introduce the enabling technologies in realizing Ue-WPIoT. Simulation results validate the effectiveness of the enabling technologies in Ue-WPIoT. We finally outline the future directions and open issues.

Abstract:Recently, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) have been widely used in the military and civil fields. However, the battery power is a key factor that restricts the operation range of the UAV. Using wireless power transfer (WPT) technology to power UAVs can improve the endurance of UAVs and enhance their maneuverability and flexibility. In this paper, the WPT technology is divided into three types: near-field WPT technology, far-field WPT technology and solar-powered UAV. The developments, challenges and prospects of these three types of WPT technologies used to power UAVs are summarized. For each type of WPT technology, the basic working principles are first introduced. The development of each type of WPT technology, as well as the challenges and application prospects in UAV charging, is introduced. The related works consist of academic and industry research, ranging from prototypes to commercial systems. Finally, three types of WPT technology used in UAV charging are compared and discussed, and the advantages and disadvantages of each type of WPT technology are shown. The related research showed that using WPT technology to power the UAV is a promising way to enhance the endurance of the UAV.

Coverage analysis of Tethered UAV-assisted Large Scale Cellular Networks

Abstract:One of the major challenges slowing down the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as aerial base stations (ABSs) is the limited on-board power supply which reduces the UAV's flight time. Using a tether to provide UAVs with power can be considered a reasonable compromise that will enhance the flight time while limiting the UAV's mobility. In this work, we propose a system where ABSs are deployed at the centers of user hotspots to offload the traffic and assist terrestrial base stations (TBSs). Firstly, given the location of the ground station in the user hotspot (user cluster) and the users spatial distribution, we compute the optimal inclination angle and length of the tether. Using these results, we compute the densities of the tethered UAVs deployed at different altitudes, which enables tractable analysis of the interference in the considered setup. Next, using tools from stochastic geometry and an approach of dividing user clusters into finite frames, we analyze the coverage probability as a function of the maximum tether length, the density of accessible rooftops for UAV ground station deployment, and the density of clusters. We verify our findings using Monte-Carlo simulations and draw multiple useful insights. For instance, we show that it is actually better to deploy UAVs at a fraction of the clusters, not all of them as it is usually assumed in literature.

Abstract:This paper presents a combinable wireless power transfer (WPT) system for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) with autonomous and adaptive charging of extensible capacity. By combining multiple transmission modules in parallel to power the UAV, the charging capacity of the system is dramatically enhanced and is adaptive to multiple power ratings with more flexibility. Meanwhile, the combination provides an approach for the system to improve reliability as each module can be operated independently. The mapping relationship between the transmitter (Tx) and the receiver (Rx) is investigated to estimate the amplitude and phase of output currents from the primary side. An active current ripple mitigation scheme based on real-time current estimation is proposed to regulate the Rx currents from the primary side and mitigate the synthetic current ripple without massive sensors onboard, by utilizing the interleaving technique, the output can achieve current ripple cancellation. And the experiment of a scaled-down prototype verifies that the output power of the combinable configuration is boosted up by 145.5% compared with that of a single module, meanwhile, the active ripple mitigation can indeed ameliorate the charging performance and prolong the battery life, the synthetic ripple amplitude is weakened remarkably by 79.06% whereas the efficiency is measured 5% higher than the system without ripple mitigation.

Abstract:On-demand deployments of millimeter-wave (mmWave) access points (APs) carried by unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are considered today as a potential solution to enhance the performance of 5G+ networks. The battery lifetime of modern UAVs, though, limits the flight times in such systems. In this letter, we evaluate a feasible deployment alternative for temporary capacity boost in the areas with highly fluctuating user demands. The approach is to land UAV-based mmWave APs on the nearby buildings instead of hovering over the area. Within the developed mathematical framework, we compare the system-level performance of airborne and landed deployments by taking into account the full operation cycle of the employed drones. Our numerical results demonstrate that the choice of the UAV deployment option is determined by an interplay of the separation distance between the service area and the UAV charging station, drone battery lifetime, and the number of aerial APs in use. The presented methodology and results can support efficient on-demand deployments of UAV-based mmWave APs in prospective 5G+ networks.
