Abstract:Developing sensitive and portable methods for detecting 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) in food is important for ensuring food safety. Herein, a novel detection system using magnetic covalent organic frameworks (MCOFs) combined with biomass carbon dots (CDs) embedded in molecularly imprinted polymers (CDs-MFMIPs) has been designed specifically for detecting 4-NP in food. The biomass CDs synthesized from green persimmons serve as the fluorescent source, while the MCOFs enhance the response signals. The synergistic effect of the fluorescence response from the biomass CDs and the specificity of imprinting sites enable excellent 4-NP detection. This ultrasensitive fluorescence probe exhibits rapid response, excellent selectivity, magnetic properties, and a wide linear range of 0.05–50 μM, with a low detection limit of 17.44 nM. Furthermore, the smartphone-assisted sensor allows for convenient, visual, and precise 4-NP detection. This approach offers a reliable method and promising applications for onsite detection of 4-NP in food.

Abstract:The relationship between depression and cognitive functioning in multiple sclerosis (MS) has been well studied, with an increasing number of recent investigations showing associations. However, there appears to be only one study that systematically manipulated cognitive task effort in relation to depression in MS. This study1 showed that a depressed MS group performed worse compared with a nondepressed MS group on an effortful working memory task, but not on a less effortful simple span task. However, the approach was dichotomous, making it impossible to determine the point where cognitive demands exceed depressed patients’ available resources. Examining cognitive functioning on a continuum makes this approach possible, with reaction time (RT) tasks providing an ideal method for doing this.

Abstract:A dual-response ratiometric fluorescence imprinted sensor based on visible/near-infrared emission was established for ultrasensitive, selective and visual detection 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). The molecularly imprinted polymer was incorporated in the ratiometric sensing system consisting of visible emission carbon dots@zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (CDs@ZIF-8) and near-infrared emission cadmium telluride (CdTe) quantum dots. The CDs@ZIF-8 enhanced the emission of CDs and the fluorescence sensing performance. Compared to short wavelength of fluorophore, the near-infrared emission CdTe is less interference caused by auto-fluorescence of sample. The ratiometric fluorescence imprinted sensor exhibited dual response for 4-NP at 420 nm and 703 nm and a wide concentration response range. Moreover, a good linear response was existed in the two concentration ranges of 0.1 pM-3.0 pM and 0.05 μM-30 μM with the detection limit of 0.08 pM and 0.05 μΜ, respectively. Significantly, the fluorescence color changes can be observed from purple to pink to red with the naked eye. The fluorescence quenching mechanism of the ratimetric fluorescence imprinted sensor was discussed in detail. The ratiometric fluorescence imprinted sensor was used to detect 4-NP in various real samples with satisfactory recoveries of 97.5-106.3%, which provided an interesting avenue for the rapid detection of pollutant with high sensitivity, high selectivity and visualization in real environment.
Inner filter effect-based highly sensitive quantification of 4-nitrophenol by strong fluorescent N, S co-doped carbon dots

Abstract:Abstract4-Nitrophenol (4NP) is a vital intermediate in organic industries, and its exploitation creates serious environmental issues. We propose a fluorescence quenching-based strategy with nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon dots (NS-CDs) for highly sensitive 4NP detection with excellent selectivity. The NS-CDs are produced through the hydrothermal process, in which citric acid serves as a carbon source and cysteamine hydrochloride as a source of N and S. The effect of doping was also studied by synthesizing undoped CDs and examining their properties. As-developed NS-CDs exhibit a bright cyan blue color with maximum emission centered at 465 nm. The fluorescence of NS-CDs is significantly quenched in an approximately linear fashion with increasing 4NP concentration (7.5–97.5 μM). The inner filter effect (IFE) and static quenching (SQ) between NS-CDs and 4NP are responsible for such fluorescence reduction. The fluorimetry technique enables the quantification of 4NP with a limit of detection (LOD) of about 0.028 μM. Moreover, the fluorescence quenching is tested for several other chemical compounds but they generate false quenching signals; only 4NP leads to fluorescence quenching of NS-CDs, demonstrating excellent selectivity. The “turn-off” fluorescence properties and visually apparent color change of the fluorescent probe reveal the excellent performance for 4NP sensing. The NS-CDs’ capability of quantifying 4NP in real water samples (tap water and drinking water) produces an excellent recovery rate ranging between 96.24 and 98.36%.

Highly Selective Detection of P-Nitrophenol Using Fluorescence Assay Based on Boron, Nitrogen Co-Doped Carbon Dots

Abstract:p-Nitrophenol (p-NP) contaminants seriously endanger environmental and living beings health, hence to establish a sensitive and selective method is of great importance for the determination of p-NP. In this work, boron and nitrogen co-doped carbon dots (B,N-CDs) were synthesized by one-step hydrothermal method using 3-aminophenylboronic acid as the sole precursor. The product was characterized through high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, UV visible absorption spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Without any functionalized modification, B,N-CDs can be directly applied as a 'turn-off' fluorescent probe for rapid, highly selective, and sensitive detection of p-NP. The fluorescent sensor based on the B,N-CDs exhibited a broad linear response to the concentration of p-NP in the range of 0.5 - 60 mu M and 60 - 200 mu M, respectively, and provided a detection limit of 0.2 mu M. It was found that only the absorption spectrum of p-NP has a wide overlap with the fluorescence excitation and emission spectra of B,N-CDs compared to those of other representative analogues. The response mechanism was due to the inner filter effect and the formation of dynamic covalent B-O bonds between B,N-CDs and p-NP, which endowed the sensing platform with the rapid response and high selectivity to p-NP. Finally, the sensor showed the practicability of p-NP determination in environmental water samples.
Molecularly Imprinted Core-Shell CdSe@SiO2/CDs as a Ratiometric Fluorescent Probe for 4-Nitrophenol Sensing

Abstract:Abstract4-Nitrophenol (4-NP) is a priority pollutant in water and is both carcinogenic and genotoxic to humans and wildlife even at very low concentrations. Thus, we herein fabricated a novel molecularly imprinted core-shell nanohybrid as a ratiometric fluorescent sensor for the highly sensitive and selective detection of 4-NP. This sensor was functioned by the transfer of fluorescence resonance energy between photoluminescent carbon dots (CDs) and 4-NP. This sensor was synthesized by linking organosilane-functionalized CDs to silica-coated CdSe quantum dots (CdSe@SiO2) via Si–O bonds. The nanohybrids were further modified by anchoring a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) layer on the ratiometric fluorescent sensor through a facile sol–gel polymerization method. The morphology, chemical structure, and optical properties of the resulting molecularly imprinted dual-emission fluorescent probe were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and spectroscopic analysis. The probe was then applied in the detection of 4-NP and exhibited good linearity between 0.051 and 13.7 μg/mL, in addition to a low detection limit of 0.026 μg/mL. Furthermore, the simplicity, reliability, high selectivity, and high sensitivity of the developed sensor demonstrate that the combination of MIPs and ratiometric fluorescence allows the preparation of excellent fluorescent sensors for the detection of trace or ultra-trace analytes.

Abstract:Rapid and real-time detection of 2, 4, 6-trinitrophenol (TNP) is of great importance for the living environment and human health. Herein, we constructed an innovative ratiometric fluorescence imprinted sensor with fast response and high selectivity based on magnesium and nitrogen co-doped carbon dots (Mg, N-CDs) and chromium telluride quantum dots (r-CdTe) self-assembled in zirconium-based metal organic frameworks (UiO-66) combined with imprinted polymers for the detection of TNP. In the protocol, the introduction of UiO-66 with large specific surface area and porosity using as carrier material significantly enhanced the mass transfer rate, which improved the sensitivity of the Mg, N-CDs/r-CdTe@UiO-66@MIP (LHU@MIP). And the Mg, N-CDs with high quantum yields and r-CdTe were selected as fluorescence emitting elements to yield fluorescence signal, achieving signal amplification. The dual-channel strategy enabled the sensor to not only display a fast fluorescence response, but also generate a dual-response signal under the action of internal filtering effect (IFE). Combining these advantages, the LHU@MIP had a wide linear range (1–100 μM), good detection sensitivity (0.56 μM), and a distinct color change (from blue to pink). Meanwhile, for accurate on-site analysis, we designed a portable smart sensing platform with a color recognizer application. The smartphone enabled visual sensing of TNP by capturing fluorescent images and converting them into digital values. More importantly, the platform was successfully utilized for the analysis of TNP in the simulated actual samples with considerable results. Therefore, the developed platform was characterized by low cost, portability, ideal specificity, and provided a strategy for on-site monitoring of TNP.

Abstract:Copper (II) (Cu2+) and 3-nitropropionic acid (3-NPA) are harmful substances usually found in foods. Therefore, establishing rapid, sensitive, and accurate detection method for both of these substances is significant research work. A pyrene-based fluorescent sensor (PP) was synthesized to enable highly selective and sensitive simultaneous detection of Cu2+ and 3-NPA in food samples. Initially, PP showed weak fluorescence because of the photo–induced electron transfer process (PET). Upon the presence of Cu2+, the emission of PP at 454nm enhanced owing to the coordination between PP and Cu2+ which hindered the PET. Additionally, under 365nm UV irradiation, the color of the PP solution transitions from orange to bright blue, allowing for naked-eye detection. The sensor PP demonstrated high selectivity and sensitivity toward Cu2+ compared to other competitive metal ions, with the detection limit was 0.036μM, within a linear range of 0–20μM. The binding stoichiometry between PP and Cu2+ is determined to be 2:1 using the Job’s plot method, with a binding constant (Ka) of 7.2 ×103M−1/2. Furthermore, at lower pH (in the range 2.55–5.98), the emission of PP was also enhanced due to the protonation of PP which suppresses the PET process. Given its sensitive and linear response to acidic pH, PP exhibits excellent sensing performance for detecting 3-NPA, with a low detection limit of 0.32μM, surpassing previously reported methods in terms of detection sensitivity.

Abstract:To set up effective analysis method is important for environmental monitoring. In this work, the 4-aminophenol functionalized nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon quantum dots (AP-NSCDs) were synthesized based on the functionalization of NSCDs obtained by one-step hydrothermal method and used as a new fluorescent sensor for the determination of nitroalkene pesticide and medicine, such as nitenpyram, nizatidine and ranitidine. Nitroalkenes could quench the fluorescence of the functionalized carbon dots due to the fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) principle. The sensor showed high sensitivity, selectivity, and stability, with a wide linear range of 0.05 ∼ 10 mg/L and a low detection limit of 0.02 mg/L. This sensor was successfully employed to detect nitenpyram in rice, orange and cabbage, and to determine nizatidine and ranitidine in serum, urine and river water as well. The developed method was rapid and sensitive, and had potential for monitoring the nitroalkene compounds in the environment and food.

Abstract:We on report an eco-friendly molecularly imprinted material based on carbon dots (C-dots) via a facile and efficient sol–gel polymerization for selective fluorescence detection of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP). The amino-modified C-dots were firstly synthesized by a hydrothermal process using citric acid as the carbon source and poly(ethyleneimine) as the surface modifier, and then after a sol–gel molecular imprinting process, the molecularly imprinted fluorescence material was obtained. The material (MIP-C-dots) showed strong fluorescence from C-dots and high selectivity due to the presence of a molecular imprint. After the detection conditions were optimized, the relative fluorescence intensity (F 0 /F) of MIP-C-dots presented a good linearity with 4-NP concentrations in the linear range of 0.2 − 50 μ mol L -1 with a detection limit (3σ/k) of 0.06 μmol L -1 . In addition, the correlation coefficient was 0.9978 and the imprinting factor was 2.76. The method was applicable to the determination of trace 4-NP in Yangtze River water samples and good recoveries from 92.6–107.3 % were obtained. The present study provides a general strategy to fabricate materials based on C-dots with good fluorescence property for selective fluorescence detection of organic pollutants. Abstract:As an antioxidant and preservative agent, nitrite (NO2-) plays an essential role in the food industry to maintain freshness or inhibit microbial growth. However, excessive addition of NO2- is detrimental to health, so accurate and portable detection of NO2- is critical for food quality control. Notably, the selectivity of most carbon dots (CDs)-based fluorescence sensors was not enough due to the nonspecific interaction mechanism of hydrogen bond, electrostatic interaction and inner filter effect etc. Herein, a novel fluorescence/UV-vis absorption (FL/UV-vis) dual-mode sensor was developed on basis of mC-CDs, which were prepared by simple solvothermal treatment of m-Phenylenediamine (m-PDA) and cyanidin cation (CC). The fluorescence of these mC-CDs could be selectively responded by NO2- through the specific diazo coupling reaction between NO2- and amino groups on the surface of mC-CDs, thus effectively improving the selectivity of NO2- detection. The CDs-based fluorescence sensor possessed a low detection limit of 0.091 μM and 0.143 μM for FL and UV-vis methods and the excellent linear range of 0.0-60.0 μM. Furthermore, the mC-CDs sensor was employed to detect NO2- in real samples with a recovery rate of 97.11 %-104.15 % for quantitative addition. Moreover, the smartphone-assisted fluorescence sensing platform developed could identify the subtle color changes that could not be distinguished by the naked eye, and had the advantages of fast detection speed and intelligence. More importantly, the portable solid phase sensor based on mC-CDs had been successfully applied to the specific fluorescence identification and concentration monitoring of NO2-. Accordingly, the designed sensor provided a new strategy for the highly selective and convenient sensing of NO2- in food substrates, and paved the way for the wide application of CDs-based nanomaterials in the detection of food safety.

Abstract:An “on–off–on” fluorescence sensor was designed for rapidly and consecutively detecting 4-nitrophenol and cerium(IV) without the use of any labeling materials. The yellow carbon dots were synthesized by a simple one-step hydrothermal approach, and various techniques were applied to investigate the morphology, structure, and optical properties of the carbon dots. Under the optimal experimental conditions, 4-nitrophenol rapidly quenched the fluorescence of carbon dots as a result of the inner filter effect (IFE). The fluorescence intensity of carbon dots was linear with the concentration of 4-nitrophenol (1–150 μmol/L) and the limit of detection was 0.32 μmol/L. The fluorescence was gradually recovered as the cerium(IV) concentration (0.5–100 μmol/L) increased in CDs/4-NP, and the limit of detection was 0.16 μmol/L. The sensor showed good selectivity and demonstrated high accuracy for the analysis of 4-nitrophenol and cerium(IV) in actual water samples.

Abstract:Herein, N, S co-doped carbon quantum dots (N, S-CDs) with high absolute quantitative yield (Abs-QY) of 50.2% were produced by hydrothermal treatment of food residue crayfish shells. A new detection method of thiamphenicol (TAP) and its analogues was established by discovering the obvious fluorescence response between TAP and N, S-CDs, which achieved a wide linear range of 20–300 μg·L−1 with a detection limit (LOD) of 11.12 μg·L−1. This novel probe exhibited strong sensitivity and shows rapid response in complex food matrices (overall detection time is less than 45 min) mainly induced by static quenching. Spiked food sample recovery ranged from 97.3 to 99.34%. Further, the cell experiments of N, S-CDs were conducted, and the cell viability remained 91.76% under high concentration of N, S-CDs due to the environmentally friendly materials. The low cytotoxicity and good cytocompatibility make these N, S-CDs compatible for cell bioimaging and intracellular detection of TAP.

Abstract:Efficient detection of 4- nitrophenol (4-NP) organic pollutant is always a very important issue due to the rapid development of chemical industry and the abuse of pesticides and so on. Here, we designed and synthesized a novel supramolecular fluorescent probe, 4-[4-(acetylamino)styryl]-1-cyclodextrin pyridinium p-toluenesulfonate (ASPT-β-CD), for the selective and sensitive detection of 4-NP. The introduction of β-CD not only improves the water solubility of probe and can also be used as a host to encapsulate 4-NP. In alkaline aqueous solution, the absorption spectrum of 4-NP overlaps the excitation spectrum of ASPT-β-CD and suggests that an internal filtration effect occurs between them. We explored the possible response mechanism and speculated that the high selectivity and high sensitivity were derived from the synergistic effect of inner filtering effect and host-guest interaction. Benefiting from the synergistic effect, the proposed sensor ASPT-β-CD displayed significant "turn-off" after adding 4-NP, while showing a fast response to 4-NP within 2 min and low LOD about 0.01 μM. In addition, this method has been successfully applied to the determination of 4-NP in lake water samples, indicating that the obtained ASPT-β-CD has great practical application potential in the environmental field.

Abstract:Developing reliable nitrite (NO2-) sensors is essential for food safety and reducing health risks from NO2- exposure. In this study, we strategically designed nitrogen-doped carbon dot (N-CD) nanozymes to establish an accessible dual-signal ratiometric sensing system for detecting NO2- in food matrices. This system utilizes the photoluminescence and enzyme-like properties of N-CD nanozymes combined with NO2--triggered diazotization reactions of substrates such as o-phenylenediamine (OPD) or 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). The resulting N-CD/OPD and N-CD/TMB composites provide dual-mode detection-fluorescence and colorimetric-with high selectivity for NO2- and excellent resistance to interference. These sensors exhibit clear color changes under both ultraviolet and visible light, and can be combined with smartphones for visual, on-site detection of NO2-. By incorporating a ratiometric strategy, dual-signal output, and smartphone compatibility, our system achieved a low detection limit (≤ 1.92 μM) and satisfactory recovery rates (85.6-115 %) in environmental water and food samples. This highlights the potential of smartphone-assisted sensors for environmental monitoring and food safety applications. Our carbon dot-based platform offers a practical and effective solution for on-site NO2- detection, contributing valuable insights to the field.

Abstract:The simultaneous detection of multiple analytes through a single fluorescence sensor is highly attractive. In this study, phosphorus-doped graphitic carbon nitride quantum dots (P-CNQDs) were developed, achieving multi-mode sensing through three distinct response mechanisms. The preparation involved using melamine as the carbon and nitrogen source and ammonium dihydrogen phosphate as the phosphorus source. Uniform and narrowly distributed P-CNQDs were successfully synthesized through chemical oxidation and hydrothermal methods, with an average size of 2.4 nm. These unique P-CNQDs exhibited fluorescence quenching through photo-induced electron transfer (PET) in response to Ag+. Additionally, the formation of hydrogen bonds and coordination interactions between P-CNQDs-Ag+ and ciprofloxacin (CIP) led to a pronounced fluorescence response to CIP by the chelation enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) mechanism. Furthermore, leveraging the principle of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET), P-CNQDs-CIP served as a ratio fluorescence sensor for riboflavin (RF), enabling ultra-sensitive detection of RF. The combination of PET, CHEF, and FRET response mechanisms successfully facilitated multi-mode sensing for Ag+, CIP, and RF. The detection ranges were 0.05-100 μM, 0.002-2 μM, and 0.05-60 μM, with corresponding lowest detection limits of 17.1 nM, 1.1 nM, and 29.2 nM, respectively. This versatile sensor has been effectively applied to real samples, including the detection of river water and vitamin B2 tablets.

Abstract:Multiple dopants contained carbon dots (CDs) with enhanced selectivity have aroused extensive attentions. In this work, three heteroatoms (nitrogen, sulfur, boron) and flavonoid moiety derived from the extracts of Ginkgo biloba leaves co-incorporated CDs were synthesized based on the hydrothermal strategy for novel carbon materials investigation and sensing applications. Nitrogen and flavonoid moiety co-doped CD (N-CD-Fla), nitrogen, sulfur, and flavonoid moiety co-doped CD (NS-CD-Fla), nitrogen, sulfur, boron and flavonoid moiety co-doped CD (NSB-CD-Fla) were prepared, respectively. Three CDs had diversities in nanoparticle sizes, chemical structures, and luminescence properties. NS-CD-Fla exhibited blue luminescence and had higher quantum yield (QY) than N-CD-Fla (yellow-green) and NSB-CD-Fla (blue-green), which can be attributed to its higher N content and N, S synergistic enhancement effect. The luminescence of the three CDs was speculated to be related with the electron transition of CN bonds derived from grafting amines groups onto the flavonoid-related moieties. N-CD-Fla, NS-CD-Fla, and NSB-CD-Fla were further proved to be sensitive to fenitrothion (Fen), dithianon (Dit), dinoseb (Din) and their structural analogues, they were employed as superior chemosensors for the three pesticides sensitive and selective detection. The application potentials of the novel chemosensors based analytical methods were further evaluated by real sample analysis.

Abstract:High-quality fluorescent probes based on carbon dots (CDs) have promising applications in many fields owing to their good stability, low toxicity, high quantum yield, and low raw material price. The fluorine- and nitrogen-doped fluorescent CDs (NFCDs) with blue fluorescence was successfully synthesized using 3-aminophenol and 2,4-difluorobenzoic acid as the raw material by the hydrothermal method. The NFCDs as probe can be used to directly and indirectly detect Fe3+ (detection range: 0.1–150 μM and detection limit: 0.14 μM) and ascorbic acid (AA) (detection range: 10–80 μM and detection limit: 0.11 μM). The NFCDs-based probe shows exceptional selectivity and strong anti-interference for Fe3+ and ascorbic acid (AA). In addition, we examined the response of NFCDs to Fe3+ and AA in living cells, which showed that the timely use of AA can reduce the effects of iron poisoning. This has important biological significance. This means that using NFCDs as fluorescent probes is beneficial for Fe3+ and AA detection and observing their dynamic changes in living cells. Thus, this work may contribute to the study of Fe3+- and AA-related diseases.
