Abstract:(1) Background: The present paper reports the results of the analyses performed on the wall paintings of Room E of the Domus delle Pitture (Room of the Paintings) in the Roman archaeological site of Volsinii Novi (Bolsena, Viterbo, Central Italy) aimed at supporting the recently concluded restoration. (2) Methods: ultraviolet fluorescence photography was conducted to evaluate the conservation state. Painting materials were investigated via portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometer (p-XRF), μ-Raman spectroscopy, cross-section analysis under polarizing microscope, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. (3) Results: This analysis revealed the presence of traditional pigments used in Roman wall paintings, such as ochres, earths, and Egyptian blue. Additionally, it identified pigments from previous restoration containing titanium and chromium, along with other materials present in the surface and interface of the wall painting containing arsenic, copper, lead, and vanadium, where a bluish alteration was observed. In these samples, μ-Raman spectroscopy detected calcium oxalates but also copper arsenates, likely conichalcite and/or duftite. (4) Conclusions: This result is highly relevant from an analytical point of view and in relation to the restoration decisions. Addressing the irregular bluish stains on the wall paintings poses challenges in understanding, requiring a decision on whether to remove or retain them.

Abstract:Abstract The spontaneous chemical alteration of artists’ pigment materials may be caused by several degradation processes. Some of these are well known while others are still in need of more detailed investigation and documentation. These changes often become apparent as color modifications, either caused by a change in the oxidation state in the original material or the formation of degradation products or salts, via simple or more complex, multistep reactions. Arsenic-based pigments such as orpiment (As 2 S 3 ) or realgar (α-As 4 S 4 ) are prone to such alterations and are often described as easily oxidizing upon exposure to light. Macroscopic X-ray powder diffraction (MA-XRPD) imaging on a sub area of a still life painting by the 17th century Dutch painter Martinus Nellius was employed in combination with microscopic (μ-) XRPD imaging of a paint cross section taken in the area imaged by MA-XRPD. In this way, the in situ formation of secondary metal arsenate and sulfate species and their migration through the paint layer stack they originate from could be visualized. In the areas originally painted with orpiment, it could be shown that several secondary minerals such as schultenite (PbHAsO 4 ), mimetite (Pb 5 (AsO 4 ) 3 Cl), palmierite (K 2 Pb(SO 4 ) 2 ) and syngenite (K 2 Ca(SO 4 ) 2 ∙H 2 O) have formed. Closer inspection of the cross-sectioned paint layer stack with μ-XRPD illustrates that the arsenate minerals schultenite and mimetite have precipitated at the interface between the orpiment layer and the layer below that is rich in lead white, i.e. close to the depth of formation of the arsenate ions. The sulfate palmierite has mostly precipitated at the surface and upper layers of the painting.

Abstract:On several paintings by artists of the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th Century a darkening of the original yellow areas, painted. with the chrome yellow pigment (PbCrO4, PbCrO4 center dot xPbSO(4), or PbCrO4 center dot xPbO) is observed. The most famous of these are the various Sunflowers paintings Vincent van Gogh made during his career. In. the first part of this work, we attempt to elucidate the degradation process of chrome yellow by studying artificially aged model samples. In view of the very thin (1-3 mu m) alteration layers that are formed, high lateral resolution spectroscopic methods such as microscopic X-ray absorption near edge (mu-XANES), X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (mu-XRF), and electron energy loss spectrometry (EELS) were employed. Some of these use synchrotron radiation (SR). Additionally, microscopic SR X-ray diffraction (SR mu-XRD), mu-Raman, and mid-FTIR spectroscopy were employed to completely characterize the samples. The formation of Cr(III) compounds at the surface of the chrome yellow paint layers is particularly observed in one aged model sample taken from a historic paint tube (ca. 1914). About two-thirds of the chromium that is present at the surface has reduced from the hexavalent to the trivalent state. The EELS and mu-XANES spectra are consistent with the presence of Cr2O3 center dot 2H(2)O (viridian). Moreover, as demonstrated by mu-XANES, the presence of another Cr(III) compound, such as either Cr-2(SO4)(3)center dot H2O or (CH3CO2)(7)Cr-3(OH)(2) [chromium(III) acetate hydroxide], is likely.
SR-XRD and SR-FTIR study of the alteration of silver foils in medieval paintings

Abstract:Altarpieces and polychrome carved wood from the fifteenth century AD usually exhibit golden and silvery areas by the application of a very thin foil of metal. The metal foils were normally protected from the atmosphere by a varnish or resin which maybe either preserved or absent. Moreover, they were glued to the background surface by adhesive substances (egg yolk, drying oil or animal glue). The high proportion of the glueing substances often renders the development of reaction compounds. With time, silver alters blacken or simply disappear completely. In this paper, we study the alterations to metal foils from a selection of fifteenth century artworks showing different glueing agents, organic coatings and several degrees of conservation of the organic coatings and metal leafs. The submillimetric layered structure and the high variability and low amount of most of the compounds present in the different layers, as well as their differing nature (organic and inorganic) make the use of micron-sensitive high-resolution techniques essential for their study. In particular, the high resolution, high brilliance and small footprint renders synchrotron radiation most adequate for their study. SR-XRD was performed to identify the reaction compounds formed in the different layers; μFTIR was used at to identify the silver protecting organic coatings, the metal foil glueing layers and the corresponding reaction compounds. The results obtained suggest that atmospheric corrosion is the dominant mechanism, and therefore that the degree of corrosion of the metal foils is mainly related to the conservation state of the protecting coatings.
Red stains on heritage marbles: application of micro-scale analyses to assess the presence and distribution of lead compounds

Abstract:Stone cultural heritage buildings are frequently affected by different alteration phenomena and in particular, on heritage marbles the presence of chromatic discolouration, as the red stains, is one of the most widespread. In this paper, small fragments of red stains originated on marble exposed to different environmental contexts were analysed to reveal the presence and distribution of lead compounds at the micro-scale level. The samples come from slabs of historical religious buildings in Florence (Santa Maria del Fiore Cathedral and the San Giovanni Baptistery) and from the monumental fountains conserved in the Medicean Villa La Petraia (Florence). The presence and distribution of lead compounds: minium (Pb3O4), carbonates such as cerussite (PbCO3) and hydrocerussite (Pb3(CO3)2(OH)2) and plattnerite (PbO2), was revealed using 2D high lateral resolution micro-X-Ray Powder Diffraction (μ-XRPD) and μ-Raman spectroscopy. Additional information were provided by Scanning Electron Microscopy, the elemental distribution performed with micro-X-Ray Fluorescence mapping enable to verify the possible presence of light elements and the use of FTIR chemical imaging confirmed the absence of organic compounds.

Abstract:Cadmium yellow degradation afflicts numerous paintings realized between the XIXth and XXth centuries. The degradation process and its kinetics is not completely understood. It consists of chalking, lightening, flaking, spalling, and, in its most deteriorated cases, the formation of a crust over the original yellow paint. In order to improve the comprehension of the process, mock-up samples of CdS in yellow and orange tonalities were studied by means of structural analysis and optical characterization, with the principal techniques used in the field of cultural heritage. Mock ups were artificially degraded with heat treatment and UV exposure. Relevant colorimetric variation appears in CIE Lab coordinates from reflectance spectra. XRD, SEM-EDS, and Raman spectroscopy revealed the formation of cadmium sulfate, whilst time-resolved photoluminescence and pump-probe transient absorption spectroscopy suggest the formation of a defective phase, compatible with Cd vacancies and the formation of both CdO and CdSO4 superficial clusters.

Abstract:Paintings are composed of superimposed layers of inorganic and organic materials (pigments and binders). Knowledge of the stratigraphic sequence of these heterogeneous layers is fundamental for understanding the artist’s painting technique and for conservation issues. In this study, micro-IR mapping experiments in reflection mode have been carried out on cross-sections taken from simulations of ancient easel paintings. The objective was to locate both organic binders and inorganic pigments. Chemical maps have been re-constructed using the common approach based on the integration of specific infrared bands. However, owing to the complexity of painting materials, this approach is not always applicable when dealing with broad and superimposed spectral features and with reststrahlen or derivative-like bands resulting from acquisition in reflection mode. To overcome these limitations, principal-component analysis has been successfully used for the re-construction of the image, extracting the relevant information from the complex full spectral data sets and obtaining reliable chemical distributions of the stratigraphy materials. Different pigment–binder combinations have been evaluated in order to understand limitations and strengths of the approach. Abstract:The spontaneous degradation of pigments in painting may occur depending on environment, especially the surrounding condition of high humidity and soluble salts. Even some of these are well studied, more investigations are still in need for heritage science. Paint cross sections from Vairocana Statue in Dazu Rock Carvings, one of World Cultural Heritage, Chongqing, China are studied by optical microscopy (OM), Raman spectroscopy (Raman) and mapping, and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (SEM–EDS). Ultramarine blue, emerald green, synthetic atacamite, vermilion, red lead, gold foil, orpiment, cerussite, gypsum and barite are identified as pigments. Moreover, lavendulan (NaCaCu5(AsO4)4Cl·5H2O) and mimetite (Pb5(AsO4)3Cl) are degradation products of emerald green (Cu(C2H3O2)2·3Cu(AsO2)2) and cerussite(PbCO3) originally used as green pigment with mixture. These secondary products are formed via multistep progresses as degradation of emerald green and cerussite, oxidation of arsenite ((AsO2)−), migration of arsenate ((AsO4)3−) and precipitation reaction of these ions with other necessary ions from environmental conditions. Based on the pigment and paint layer stratigraphy analysis, the paintings of the statue have been executed at least four times and the most recent may be after 1850s. The formation of lavendulan give rise to a highlight for identification of green copper-arsenic containing pigments and characterization of degradation in complex conditions.

Abstract:The painter, Vincent van Gogh, and some of his contemporaries frequently made use of the pigment chrome yellow that is known to show a tendency toward darkening. This pigment may correspond to various chemical compounds such as PbCrO4 and PbCr1-xSxO4, that may each be present in various crystallographic forms with different tendencies toward degradation. Investigations by X-ray diffraction (XRD), mid-Fourier Transform infrared (FTIR), and Raman instruments (benchtop and portable) and synchrotron radiation-based micro-XRD and X-ray absorption near edge structure spectroscopy performed on oil-paint models, prepared with in-house synthesized PbCrO4 and PbCr1-xSxO4, permitted us to characterize the spectroscopic features of the various forms. On the basis of these results, an extended study has been carried out on historic paint tubes and on embedded paint microsamples taken from yellow-orange/pale yellow areas of 12 Van Gogh paintings, demonstrating that Van Gogh effectively made use of different chrome yellow types. This conclusion was also confirmed by in situ mid-FTIR investigations on Van Gogh's Portrait of Gauguin (Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam).
Evaluation of the skeletal kinetics of fluorine-18-fluoride ion with PET.

Abstract:To evaluate the feasibility of quantitatively assessing regional skeletal fluoride uptake in humans in focal and generalized bone disease, we investigated the skeletal kinetics of [18F]fluoride ion with dynamic PET imaging. Dynamic image sets were acquired over a 60-min interval in a multiplane PET device, and input functions (plasma 18F time-activity curves) were measured directly from arterialized blood and, in some cases, determined from image-derived left ventricular cavity activity measurements. Our results indicate: 1. A steady-state ratio of [18F]fluoride ion concentration in plasma to whole blood greater than unity (1.23 for plasma to directly assayed whole blood and 1.44 for plasma to left ventricular cavity imaged concentrations. This concentration difference produces a scaling factor that must be considered when using image derived or directly measured input functions. 2. The preferred tracer kinetic model configuration for [18F]fluoride ion skeletal kinetics is a three compartment model that includes a "bound" and "unbound" bone [18F]fluoride ion compartment. 3. The rate constant for forward transport of [18F]fluoride ion from plasma to the extravascular space of bone (K1) and the regional blood volume parameter generate estimates of bone blood flow and vascular volume, respectively, that are in the physiologic range of reported for mammals. Estimates of the uptake constant for fluoride in bone, using nonlinear regression (KNLR = 0.0360 +/- 0.0064 ml/min/ml), are in very good agreement with an estimate of the same parameter obtained with Patlak graphical analysis (KPAT = 0.0355 +/- 0.0061 ml/min/ml). 4. Generating parametric images of KPAT facilitates quantification of regional bone [18F]fluoride ion kinetics. The method is computationally practical, and, with either the parametric imaging approach or with standard region of interest analysis, can be used to generate quantitative estimates of fluoride uptake (a "bone metabolic index") in focal skeletal regions or in more generalized distributions.

Abstract:Multivariate chemometric methods are applied for identifying earth pigments from square‐wave voltammetric measurements performed at pigment‐modified paraffin‐impregnated graphite electrodes allowing for a separation between hematite‐based earths, French ochres, Spanish ochres, siennas, umbers and green earths. This methodology is applied to the identification of the pigments in samples from the ceiling frescoes of Antonio Palomino (dated 1707) in the vaulted nave of the Sant Joan del Mercat church in Valencia (Spain). These frescoes suffered considerable damage by fire during the Spanish Civil War in 1936, resulting in severe chemical and chromatic alterations. Electrochemical data, supported by scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X‐ray microanalysis and Raman spectroscopy, indicate that thermal stress induced the transformation of goethite‐based yellow ochres into hematite and magnetite.

Abstract:The interaction of pigments and binding media may result in the production of metal soaps on the surface of paintings which modifies their visible appearance and state of conservation. To characterise more fully the metal soaps found on paintings, several historically accurate oil and egg yolk tempera paint reconstructions made with different pigments and naturally aged for 10 years were submitted to attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR FTIR) microspectroscopic analyses. Standard metal palmitates were synthesised and their ATR spectra recorded in order to help the identification of metal soaps. Among the different lead-based pigments, red lead and litharge seemed to produce a larger amount of carboxylates compared with lead white, Naples yellow and lead tin yellow paints. Oil and egg tempera litharge and red lead paints appeared to be degraded into lead carbonate, a phenomenon which has been observed for the first time. The formation of metal soaps was confirmed on both oil and egg tempera paints based on zinc, manganese and copper and in particular on azurite paints. ATR mapping analyses showed how the areas where copper carboxylates were present coincided with those in which azurite was converted into malachite. Furthermore, the key role played by manganese in the production of metals soaps on burnt and raw sienna and burnt and raw umber paints has been observed for the first time. The formation of copper, lead, manganese, cadmium and zinc metal soaps was also identified on egg tempera paint reconstructions even though, in this case, the overlapping of the spectral region of the amide II band with that of metal carboxylates made their identification difficult.FigureFTIR false colour plot of the azurite distribution on a selected area of the azurite oil paint reconstruction

Abstract:In cultural heritage, paint stratigraphies are complex systems typically consisting of various paint layers with fine crystalline phases mixed with coarse pigment and filler grains. This complexity poses significant challenges for X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. In this work, we employed synchrotron radiation micro-X-ray diffraction in transmission geometry (SR-μTXRD) with linear mapping to develop a novel approach for studying the crystalline phases (pigments and fillers) in mock-up paint stratigraphies. A targeted approach was followed for qualitative, quantitative, and microstructural analysis, combining signals from micrometric crystallites and coarse single crystals as well as from randomly oriented and iso-oriented crystalline phases. This allows for identifying, localizing, and quantifying these phases even in low fractions and distinguishes the same phases across different layers with varying grain sizes or spatial orientations. Critical analysis of 2D XRD patterns, coupled with full-profile fitting performed by the Rietveld method, provides insights into material preparation (e.g., grinding), painting technique (e.g., color palette, use of fillers, brushing), and crystallo-chemical modifications over time. This analytical approach, integrating spatially resolved investigation with high-quality phase characterization, enhances the potential of specific XRD methodologies for a 2D investigation of multi-phase materials in cultural heritage, even without dedicated micro-mapping techniques.

Abstract:Abstract The use of non-invasive macroscopic imaging techniques is becoming more prevalent in the field of cultural heritage, especially to avoid invasive procedures that damage valuable artworks. For this purpose, an X-ray powder diffraction scanner (MA-XRPD) capable of visualising crystalline compounds in a highly specific manner was recently developed. Many inorganic pigments present in paintings fall into this category of materials. In this study, the 17th century oil painting Girl with a Pearl Earring (c. 1665) by Johannes Vermeer was analysed with a combination of transmission and reflection mode MA-XRPD. By employing this scanner in reflection mode, the relative sensitivity for compounds that are present at the paint surface could be increased, establishing it as a highly relevant technique for investigating the degradation processes that are ongoing at paint surfaces. Many of the original pigments employed by Vermeer could be identified, along with four secondary alteration products: gypsum (CaSO 4 ·2H 2 O), anglesite (PbSO 4 ), palmierite (K 2 Pb(SO 4 ) 2 ) and weddellite (CaC 2 O 4 ·2H 2 O). The formation of gypsum was linked to the presence of chalk in the upper glaze layer while the formation of palmierite and weddellite is driven by the presence of lake pigments (and their substrates). In this manner, MA-XRPD can also be used to pinpoint locations relevant for sampling and synchrotron μ-XRPD analysis, which provides information on the microscopic make-up of the paint. A paint cross-section taken from an area rich in palmierite was analysed with synchrotron μ-XRPD, which confirmed the presence of this secondary compound at the interface of the upper paint layer with the ground layer as well as the presence of anglesite in the ground layer. The capacity of MA-XRPD to identify and chart secondary alteration products in a non-invasive manner has only very recently been demonstrated and makes it a highly relevant technique for the assessment of the chemical condition of works of art.

One hundred molars were randomly selected and then mounted in an apparatus that isolated the crown portion of the tooth. Provisional restorative materials were placed in an open access following manufacturer guidelines. Streptococcus mutans was applied to the samples, and results were tabulated over the course of 4 weeks. RESULTS Cavit and DuoTemp performed the best, and Ketac performed the worst. After 14 days, however, all materials leaked in over half of the samples. CONCLUSION No material can be recommended as superior in providing a reliable seal after 14 days.
Pigment identification on "Pietà" of Barletta, example of Renaissance Apulian sculpture: a Raman microscopy study

Abstract:A study of the original painting layer of the "Pietà" of Barletta, a polychrome statue, important example of Renaissance Apulian sculpture, was performed by mu-Raman spectroscopy. Vermilion was identified in the original layer of the blood drops on Jesus knee. Lazurite was identified as the original blue pigment on Our Lady's veil and lace, currently a yellow ochre-like color. The use of lazurite demonstrates the historical-artistic importance of this polychrome statue, and supports the hypothesis that this artwork was probably commissioned by Our Lady's devotees to itinerant artists inspired by the more precious Vesperbilder model.

Abstract:Since antiquity, the red pigment mercury sulfide (α-HgS), called cinnabar in its natural form or vermilion red when synthetic, was very often used in frescoes and paintings, even if it was known to suffer occasionally from degradation. The paint hereby acquires a black or silver-grey aspect. The chemical characterization of these alteration products is rather challenging mainly because of the micrometric size and heterogeneity of the surface layers that develop and that are responsible for the color change. Methods such as electron microscopy, synchrotron-based microscopic X-ray fluorescence, microscopic X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy, Raman microscopy and secondary ion microscopy have been previously employed to identify the (Hg- and S-) compounds present and to study their co-localization. Next to these, also microscopic X-ray diffraction (XRD) (either by making use of laboratory X-ray sources or when used at a synchrotron facility) allows the identification of the crystal phases that are present in degraded HgS paint layers. In this paper we employ these various forms of micro-XRD to analyze degraded red paint in different paintings and compare the results with other X-ray based methods. Whereas the elemental analyses of the degradation products revealed, next to mercury and sulfur, the presence of chlorine, X-ray diffraction allowed the identification, next to α-HgS, of the Hg and S-containing compound calomel (Hg2Cl2) but also of the Hg, S and Cl-containing minerals corderoite (α-Hg3S2Cl2) and kenhsuite (γ-Hg3S2Cl2). These observations are consistent with X-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements performed at the S- and Cl-edges.

Comprehensive Analysis of Polychrome Grotto Relics: A Case Study of the Paint Layers from Anyue, Sichuan, China

Abstract:There are more than 18,500 grotto statues in Anyue County, Sichuan Province, China. These grotto statues painted with diverse colors were first sculpted in the Sui Dynasty (581–618 AD) and play a significant role in the history of grotto art development in China. However, due to natural weathering and human factors, the grotto paintings are suffering from many problems, such as flaking and powdering. To study the composition, structure, and destructive factors at work in the paint layers, a set of effective detection methods were integrated, including Raman spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy–energy dispersive spectroscopy, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, immunofluorescence microscopy, and others. The pigments, layer structures, binding materials, and elemental migrations of 22 polychrome samples from the Anyue grottoes are detected. The results show that the Anyue grottoes were painted with more than ten pigments. Casein, egg white, mammalian glue, and plant glue were also detected in samples as binding materials. The accumulation of sulfur and calcium on the surface of several samples was found, which was the main reason for the flaking of the pigments. This study provides not only a reference method but also basic information for the subsequent restoration design.

Micro-analytical Evidence of Copper-Based Pigment and Fungal Contamination of Medieval Mural Paintings in Beram, Croatia

Abstract:The aim of the present study was to map the painting materials, degradation processes, and biological features present on the mural painting in the church of St. Mary in Beram (Croatia) to study their possible interaction and produce information helping the preservation of this valuable painting. The research was conducted on micro samples of painting materials taken from different sites along the painting and the characterization of the present fungal species was carried out. The painting samples, together with observable patinas and degradation products, were studied by optical microscopy (OM), scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS), Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction. Fungal diversity was studied using cultivation methods followed by OM and SEM analyses in addition to molecular analysis. The results contribute to the characterization of the original painting materials, successively added materials and occurred interventions, to the understanding of degradation progressions and fungal biotransformation processes. A mineral, cumengite, a copper-based pigment extremely rarely used in art, was found. Its occurrence together with barium sulfate, gypsum, and calcium oxalate possibly produced by microbiological activity was studied and information was added regarding the composition of painting materials in St. Mary church mural cycle.
