Abstract:Introduction and aims: Pandemic lockdown measures are a cause of concern, regarding their negative impact on the mental health of individuals. The results of numerous studies have associated the appearance of gastrointestinal symptoms with different psychologic disorders, such as stress, depression, and anxiety, due to gut-brain axis interaction. The aim of the present study was to determine the prevalence of, and factors associated with, gastrointestinal symptom onset related to the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown and various lifestyle modifications. Methods: An analytic, observational, and cross-sectional study was conducted on an open population that agreed to participate within the time frame of January to May 2021. Results: A total of 298 subjects, 165 of whom were women (55.4%), agreed to participate and the mean patient age was 36.1 ± 12.6 years. There was a significant increase in the frequency of several gastrointestinal symptoms: epigastric burning, early satiety, heartburn, regurgitation, constipation, and diarrhea. Changes in weight and modifications in lifestyle were found to be associated variables. Conclusions: The results of this study showed a significant increase in a wide variety of gastrointestinal symptoms related to lifestyle changes due to the pandemic lockdown. Weight change, supplement and multivitamin intake, and reduced physical activity were the main associated risk factors. Public healthcare systems should take a multidisciplinary approach into consideration for the care of affected individuals.
Intrahepatic Fat Content and COVID-19 Lockdown in Adults with NAFLD and Metabolic Syndrome

Abstract:Background: COVID-19 lockdowns had a significant impact on people's health, triggering levels of anxiety, perceived stress, and changes in food and nutritional status. Objectives: To assess the changes in dietary habits, metabolic syndrome (MetS) and liver parameters before and after the COVID-19 lockdown according to changes in intrahepatic fat content in adults with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and MetS. Design: Pre- and post-lockdown observation of the COVID-19 lockdown on fifty-nine 40–60-year-old participants with MetS and NAFLD, in a parallel group, randomised experiment intended to treat NAFLD. Methods: Anthropometrics, liver and MetS biochemical parameters, intrahepatic fat content by abdominal magnetic resonance imaging, and dietary assessment using a validated 148-item Food Frequency Questionnaire were collected pre-COVID-19 lockdown and post-lockdown. Results: COVID-19 lockdown led to negative changes in the liver of patients with NAFLD and MetS, with weight gain and increases in glycemia, ALT and intrahepatic fat content post lockdown. Participants with worsened liver status had low consumption of fibre, cheese, nuts and coffee, and high consumption of sweets and pastries. Participants who improved liver status ameliorated ALT values, waist circumference, and intrahepatic fat content, assessed by magnetic resonance imaging post-lockdown. Conclusions: The maintenance of healthy lifestyle habits is vital, especially for populations with NAFLD and MetS, to reduce unhealthy lifestyle patterns displayed during lockdown.

Abstract:Summary Lockdown measures due to coronavirus‐19 disease (COVID‐19) have impacted lifestyle factors. This study aimed to explore whether health and lifestyle behaviours changed during the 2020 COVID‐19 lockdown among patients with obesity. A specifically designed online survey and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS‐21) were administered to patients scheduled to attend a tertiary weight management service between 6 June–12 August 2020. A total of 210 participants completed the survey; mean age (SD) was 52.1 (12.5) years, 69% female and 67% Caucasian. Only 1.4% had tested positive to COVID‐19. There was a statistically significant increase in weight pre‐ and post‐COVID‐19 lockdown, with no sex differences. Most (61.3%) gained weight, 30.4% lost weight and 8.3% maintained. The majority changed their overall purchasing (88.4%) and eating behaviours (91.6%). Two‐thirds (64%) reported they did some form of exercise during the lockdown. Of those, exercise declined in 56.8% and increased in 18%. DASS‐21 scores were positively correlated to worry about COVID‐19, eating fewer core foods and eating more convenient/treat foods and negatively correlated with exercise. The results provide insights into how and why behaviour change occurs during stressful periods like the COVID‐19 pandemic. Although there was variability in individual weight trajectories, on average people with obesity gained weight and changed lifestyle behaviours during the COVID‐19 lockdown period. Strategies and support for people with obesity are required at these times.

Abstract:Background: Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, access to fresh food has been restricted, and people are spending more time inside and have limited their physical activity. However, more time at home may have resulted in some positive habits including an increase in cooking. The aim of this review was to assess dietary changes during the first lockdown. Themes and patterns were considered and associations with other lifestyle factors were assessed. Methods: Between June and July 2020, the PubMed, Google Scholar, and Science Direct databases were searched, and results were screened for eligibility based on title, abstract, and full text. The inclusion criteria of this search included: papers published (or in pre-print) in the year 2020; studies that investigated the impact of COVID-19 lockdown on diet; papers published in English. Exclusion criteria were as follows: papers examining dietary changes in those following a structured diet based on diagnosed conditions or dietetic advice; literature, systematic, or narrative studies reviewing previous research. Researchers agreed on the study characteristics for extraction from final papers. Results: Four thousand three hundred and twenty-two studies were originally considered with 23 final full-text papers included. Four themes were identified: dietary patterns, dietary habits (favorable), dietary habits (unfavorable), and other (includes physical activity levels, weight gain). A total of 10 studies reported an increase in the number of snacks consumed, while six studies found that participants increased their meal number and frequency during quarantine. Eleven studies reported favorable changes in dietary habits with an increase in fresh produce and home cooking and reductions in comfort food and alcohol consumption. However, nine studies found a reduction in fresh produce, with a further six reporting an increase in comfort foods including sweets, fried food, snack foods, and processed foods. Two studies reported an increase in alcohol consumption. In eight studies participants reported weight gain with seven studies reporting a reduction in physical exercise. Conclusion: The effect of COVID-19 lockdown both negatively and positively impacted dietary practices throughout Europe and globally, and negative diet habits were associated with other poor lifestyle outcomes including weight gain, mental health issues, and limited physical activity. Both in the short term and if sustained in the long term, these changes may have significant impacts on the health of the population.

Abstract:Background and aimsThe impact of measures taken to contain COVID-19 on lifestyle-related behaviour is undefined in Indian population. The current study was undertaken to assess the impact of COVID-19 on lifestyle-related behaviours: eating, physical activity and sleep behaviour.MethodsThe study is a cross-sectional web-based survey. A validated questionnaire to assess the changes in lifestyle-related behaviour was administered on adults across India using a Google online survey platform.ResultsA total of 995 responses (58.5% male, mean age 33.3 years) were collected. An improvement in healthy meal consumption pattern and a restriction of unhealthy food items was observed, especially in the younger population (age <30 years). A reduction in physical activity coupled with an increase in daily screen time was found especially among men and in upper-socio-economic strata. Quarantine induced stress and anxiety showed an increase by a unit in nearly one-fourth of the participants.ConclusionsCOVID-19 marginally improved the eating behaviour, yet one-third of participants gained weight as physical activity declined significantly coupled with an increase in screen and sitting time. Mental health was also adversely affected. A detailed understanding of these factors can help to develop interventions to mitigate the negative lifestyle behaviours that have manifested during COVID-19.

Abstract:Background The COVID-19 pandemic brought unprecedented global disruption to both healthcare providers and patients with respiratory allergies. There are limited real-life data on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the risk perception of patients with allergy treated with allergen immunotherapy (AIT). Objective To understand the risk perception of allergic patients treated with sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) before and during the pandemic, and their attitudes towards COVID-19 infection and vaccination. Methods This was a non-interventional, cross-sectional survey conducted from October to November 2021 in France. Adult patients, who had been prescribed and had received a Stallergenes SLIT (liquid or liquid and tablets) before the pandemic (from August 1, 2018 to March 10, 2020) and during the pandemic (from March 11, 2020 to August 31, 2021), were identified from the Stallergenes named-patient products (NPP) database. Patients completed an online questionnaire. Data were analyzed descriptively. Results A total of 5258 patients from all over France completed the questionnaire. Mean (±SD) age of the respondents was 39.3 (±13.0) years and 66.9% were female. Some of them (11.8%) were obese (BMI >30 kg/m 2 ). Main allergic diseases were rhinitis (80.0% of patients) with or without conjunctivitis, and asthma (39.0%). More than half of the patients experienced moderate to severe (58.0%) and persistent allergic rhinitis profile (70.4%). Most patients were poly-allergic (72.7%), mostly to house dust mites (61.9%), grass pollens (61.5%), tree pollens (57.8%), and cat dander (37.2%). Only 14.1% of patients experienced an aggravation of their allergy symptoms during lockdown and 14.8% were infected with COVID-19, with hospitalization required for 1.8%. Only 3.1% of patients reported their SLIT initiation as being postponed due to the pandemic. SLIT was changed, temporarily interrupted or permanently discontinued during the pandemic in 21.9% of patients. Changes mainly concerned the maintenance dose for SLIT-liquid (63.2%). SLIT modification was due to COVID-19 infection in only 4.2%. Most patients did not feel vulnerable (53.1%), anxious (55.2%), at risk to present severe symptoms of COVID-19 (77.1%), or at risk to transmit coronavirus (80.4%). However, greater anxiety was reported in patients with allergic asthma (33.6%) or other respiratory disorders (50.4%). Patients who felt vulnerable partly assigned their vulnerability to their allergic disease (59.3%). Suffering from an allergic disease did not make patients feel more vulnerable to side effects of COVID-19 vaccine for 79.6% of them. Conclusion Overall, most patients with allergy and under SLIT were not strongly concerned by the COVID-19 infection. SLIT did not have a negative impact on the COVID-19 symptoms.

Abstract:Previous literature has demonstrated that COronaVIrus Disease of 2019 (COVID-19) impacts an individual gastrointestinal tract (GIT), causing symptoms like nausea, diarrhea, and loss of appetite. Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus RNA has been discovered in the stool of infected individuals in earlier research. It was discovered that severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus was significantly expressed in the GIT, indicating that the virus can also infect the digestive system. Angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 functions as the viral receptor. The chronic illness known as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is typified by frequent reflux of stomach acid into the esophagus. By triggering the sensitized esophageal-bronchial neuronal circuit or aspirating into the airways (microaspiration), GER exacerbates respiratory diseases. Aspiration is a well-known risk to be considered when treating patients in intensive care units. Strong genetic correlations have been identified between COVID-19 infection and GERD susceptibility, suggesting a shared genetic basis for both conditions. Nonetheless, even though GERD, extraesophageal reflex, and COVID-19 have a number of significant risk factors and exhibit similar symptoms, the relationship between these illnesses has not yet been examined in depth. This review is the first of its kind to critically examine the association between the COVID-19 epidemic and GER and its associated diseases. The key objective of this work is to promote the creation of prevention plans, treatment plans, and guidelines while also enhancing and optimizing our understanding of the relationship between COVID-19 and GERs.

Abstract:Abstract Background On December 12th 2019, a new coronavirus (SARS-Cov2) emerged in Wuhan, China, sparking a pandemic of acute respiratory syndrome in humans (COVID-19). On the 24th of April 2020, the number of COVID-19 deaths in the world, according to the COVID-Case Tracker by Johns Hopkins University, was 195,313, and the number of COVID-19 confirmed cases was 2,783,512. The COVID-19 pandemic represents a massive impact on human health, causing sudden lifestyle changes, through social distancing and isolation at home, with social and economic consequences. Optimizing public health during this pandemic requires not only knowledge from the medical and biological sciences, but also of all human sciences related to lifestyle, social and behavioural studies, including dietary habits and lifestyle. Methods Our study aimed to investigate the immediate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on eating habits and lifestyle changes among the Italian population aged ≥ 12 years. The study comprised a structured questionnaire packet that inquired demographic information (age, gender, place of residence, current employment); anthropometric data (reported weight and height); dietary habits information (adherence to the Mediterranean diet, daily intake of certain foods, food frequency, and number of meals/day); lifestyle habits information (grocery shopping, habit of smoking, sleep quality and physical activity). The survey was conducted from the 5th to the 24th of April 2020. Results A total of 3533 respondents have been included in the study, aged between 12 and 86 years (76.1% females). The perception of weight gain was observed in 48.6% of the population; 3.3% of smokers decided to quit smoking; a slight increased physical activity has been reported, especially for bodyweight training, in 38.3% of respondents; the population group aged 18–30 years resulted in having a higher adherence to the Mediterranean diet when compared to the younger and the elderly population (p < 0.001; p < 0.001, respectively); 15% of respondents turned to farmers or organic, purchasing fruits and vegetables, especially in the North and Center of Italy, where BMI values were lower. Conclusions In this study, we have provided for the first time data on the Italian population lifestyle, eating habits and adherence to the Mediterranean Diet pattern during the COVID-19 lockdown. However, as the COVID-19 pandemic is ongoing, our data need to be confirmed and investigated in future more extensive population studies.

Abstract:Background/ObjectiveFew studies have assessed the effect of lockdown on physical activity and eating behaviours in a population from the Autonomous Community of Andalusia in southern Spain. The aim of our study was to describe the effect of COVID-19 pandemic home lockdown on eating habits and lifestyle in the Andalusian population.Subjects/MethodsA cross-sectional observational study was carried out on a population from southern Spain, Andalusian population. An online questionnaire was shared through social networks and snowball sampling. A total of 1140 people filled in the questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of 34 items classified into three sections: sociodemographic data, work and leisure activities and questions on food consumption. Each item offered pre- and post-lockdown information.ResultsThe participants were classified into three age groups: 18–35, 36–65 and over 65. Statistically significant differences were found between the three groups, with the younger age group undergoing greater changes, increasing their physical activity and consumption of fresh food, and decreasing both their consumption of fast food at home and alcohol intake.ConclusionsThese findings suggest that, in the current social and health crisis, the citizens of southern Spain have become aware of the importance of maintaining an appropriate lifestyle to remain healthy, particularly the younger population with less well-consolidated habits.

Impact of COVID-19 Lockdown Measures on the Incidence of Peritonsillar Abscess: A Retrospective Study

Abstract:Background/Objectives: During the COVID-19 pandemic, Austria, like many European countries, implemented lockdown measures to curb viral transmission. These public health interventions, including social distancing and improved hygiene, were anticipated to affect various infectious diseases. This study aimed to assess whether the incidence of peritonsillar abscess, a severe upper respiratory inflammatory disease, decreased during the lockdown period of 2020 compared to previous years. Methods: This retrospective study analyzed all patients diagnosed with peritonsillar abscess from 2010 to 2020 at the Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Medical University of Graz. Patients were grouped based on the onset of disease into two periods: the lockdown period (16 March–29 May) and the rest of the year = Period 2 (1 January–15 March and 30 May–31 December). The incidence during the lockdown period of 2020 was compared to the incidence in the same timeframe in the previous years from 2010 to 2019 using chi-squared tests and Poisson regression models. Results: A total of 1768 patients (female: 44%, male: 56%; mean age: 34.6 ± 18.4 years) diagnosed with peritonsillar abscess were treated between 2010 and 2020 at the Department of Otolaryngology, Medical University of Graz. The analysis revealed that the proportion of peritonsillar abscesses in Period 1 in 2020 (15/127, 12%) was significantly lower than the mean proportion in Period 1 from 2010 to 2019 (36/164, 22%) (p = 0.004). The incidence rate of peritonsillar abscess cases per year in Period 1 (16 March–29 May) was significantly higher in each previous year from 2010 to 2019 compared to 2020 (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The findings suggest that the COVID-19 lockdown measures contributed to a reduction in the incidence of peritonsillar abscess, highlighting the broader impact of public health interventions on infectious diseases. Further research is needed to explore the effects on other respiratory infections and diseases.

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic upon patients with burning mouth syndrome

Abstract:Introduction: The global COVID-19 pandemic has caused changes in the daily life of people, with a particularly relevant impact upon certain groups of individuals that have difficulties in facing stress. A study is made of the impact of the pandemic upon patients with burning mouth syndrome (BMS). Material and methods: A total of 40 patients with BMS diagnosed in the Unit of Oral Medicine (University of Murcia, Spain) were included. In all cases the study comprised a standardized clinical interview by the same professional and an exploration of the oral cavity. The first visit took place before the pandemic and consisted of the evaluation of anxiety (Hospital and Anxiety Depression Scale [HADS]), the Pain Catastrophizing Scale (PCS), pain intensity (visual analog scale [VAS]) and sleep quality (Pittsburg Sleep Quality Index [PSQI]), while the second visit took place one and a half months after the start of lockdown due to the pandemic in Spain. Results: The study sample consisted of 36 women (90%) and four men (10%) aged between 39 and s86 years. Statistically significant differences were recorded between the two visits in terms of anxiety (p < 0.001), sleep quality (p < 0.001) and pain intensity (p < 0.001). Conclusions: The appearance of the COVID-19 pandemic has triggered worsening of anxiety, sleep quality and pain intensity in patients with BMS.

Abstract:Patients with chronic laryngopharyngeal symptoms (LPS) experience elevated hypervigilance, symptom‐specific anxiety, and psychosocial distress regardless of the presence of pathologic reflux. These findings suggest that therapies targeting cognitive‐affective processes and hyperresponsive behaviors are essential to improve quality of life in these patients. Background Patients with chronic laryngopharyngeal symptoms, with or without pathologic reflux, frequently have poor response to standard therapies, which may be a result of overlapping cognitive‐affective processes. Therefore, the aims of this study included measuring psychosocial distress and laryngeal‐specific cognitive distress in patients with chronic laryngopharyngeal symptoms (LPS) as well as comparing these among laryngeal symptomatic patients with and without conclusive gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Methods This prospective, single‐center study enrolled adults with chronic LPS from 9/22 to 6/23. Patients completed eight questionnaires on quality of life, symptom burden, and psychosocial distress. The laryngeal cognitive affective tool (LCAT) assessed laryngeal‐specific hypervigilance and anxiety; LCAT scores ≥33 were elevated. All patients underwent objective testing with endoscopy and/or ambulatory reflux monitoring and were categorized as proven GERD (GER+) or no proven GERD (GER−). Key Results One hundred twenty‐nine patients were included: 66% female, mean age 54.1 (17.5) years, mean BMI 27.6 (6.8) kg/m2, 66% Caucasian, 57% with an elevated LCAT, and 53% GER+. Moderate‐to‐severe anxiety was found in 39% and moderate‐to‐severe depression in 19%. An elevated LCAT alone or with an elevated anxiety/depression score was found in 58%. Patient‐reported outcomes scores, including LCAT scores (32.9 (13.8) GER− vs. 33.1 (12.6) GER+, p = 0.91), were similar between patients with and without GER+. Conclusions and Inferences Patients with chronic LPS experience heightened levels of hypervigilance, symptom‐specific anxiety, and psychosocial distress, regardless of the presence of pathologic GER.

Abstract:Abstract Background Quarantine/confinement is an effective measure to face the Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Consequently, in response to this stressful situation, people confined to their homes may change their everyday eating behavior. Therefore, the primary objective of this study is to evaluate the association between quarantine/confinement stressors and eating behavior during the COVID-19 outbreak. The secondary objective is to compare the association of quarantine/confinement stressors and diet behavior between two groups of participants, those attending diet clinics and those not (general population). Method A cross-sectional web-based online survey carried out between April 3 and 18, 2020, enrolled 407 participants from the Lebanese population. Eating Disorder Examination – Questionnaire (EDE-Q) were used to measure the behavioral features of eating disorders. Results More than half of the sample (53.0%) abide by the home quarantine/confinement, 95.4% were living with someone in the quarantine/confinement, and 39.6% continued to work from home. Higher fear of COVID-19 was found in 182 (44.8%) participants, higher boredom in 200 (49.2%) participants, higher anger in 187 (46.3%), and higher anxiety in 197 (48.5%) participants. Higher fear of COVID-19 (Beta = 0.02), higher BMI (Beta = 0.05), and physical activity (Beta = 1.04) were significantly associated with a higher restraint score. Higher anxiety, higher fear of COVID-19, higher BMI, practicing physical exercise, and a higher number of adults living in the quarantine/confinement were significantly associated with higher shape and weight concerns. Conclusion Our results showed that the fear of COVID-19 was correlated with more eating restraint, weight, and shape concerns in the whole sample, but more specifically in the dietitian clients group. Public health control measures are needed to reduce the detrimental effects of psychological distress associated with quarantine/confinement on eating behaviors during the COVID-19 outbreak.

Abstract:Artificial visual pigment formation was studied by using 8-methyl-substituted retinals in an effort to understand the effect that alkyl substitution of the chromophore side chain has on the visual cycle. The stereoselective synthesis of the 9-cis and 11-cis isomers of 8-methylretinal, as well as the 5-demethylated analogues is also described. The key bond formations consist of a thallium-accelerated Suzuki cross-coupling reaction between cyclohexenylboronic acids and dienyliodides (C6-C7), and a highly stereocontrolled Horner-Wadsworth-Emmons or Wittig condensation (C11-C12). The cyclohexenylboronic acid was prepared by trapping the precursor cyclohexenyllithium species with B(OiPr)(3) or B(OMe)(3). The cyclohexenyllithium species is itself obtained by nBuLi-induced elimination of a trisylhydrazone (Shapiro reaction), or depending upon the steric hindrance of the ring, by iodine-metal exchange. In binding experiments with the apoprotein opsin, only 9-cis-5-demethyl-8-methylretinal yielded an artificial pigment; 9-cis-8-methylretinal simply provided residual binding, while evidence of artificial pigment formation was not found for the 11-cis analogues. Molecular-mechanics-based docking simulations with the crystal structure of rhodopsin have allowed us to rationalize the lack of binding displayed by the 11-cis analogues. Our results indicate that these isomers are highly strained, especially when bound, due to steric clashes with the receptor, and that these interactions are undoubtedly alleviated when 9-cis-5-demethyl-8-methylretinal binds opsin.
Dietary risk factors and therapy outcomes of swallowing-related problems in laryngopharyngeal reflux: patients’ perspectives

Abstract:Abstract Background This was a prospective cohort that included 60 gastro-esophageal reflux disorder patients with suspected laryngopharyngeal reflux-related symptoms (e.g., sore throat, throat clearing, globus sensation, cough, dysphonia, and dysphagia). The diagnosis was confirmed using history taking, clinical laryngoscopic examination, and upper endoscopy guided by the Reflux Symptom Index (RSI). Patients were treated with proton pump inhibitors and prokinetics for 12 weeks. The aim of the current study was to explore the dietary risk factors in laryngopharyngeal reflux patients and to assess the response to therapy on swallowing-related problems by comparing the baseline pre-treatment and post-treatment values of RSI and Dysphagia Handicap index (DHI). Results Analysis of data regarding the role of diet as a risk factor for reflux revealed that 33 patients (55%) are eating meat, 56 patients (93.3%) eating fat, 45 patients (75%) eating sweet, 55 patients (91.7%) eating spicy food, 52 patients (96.7%) eating fried food, 34 patients (56.7%) drinking tea, 51 patients (85%) eating big meals, 21 patients (35%) drinking fruit juices, 54 patients (90%) eating sour foods, 51 patients (85%) eating citrus fruits, and 22 patients (36.7%) smokers. There was a statistically significant decrease in Reflux Symptom Index scores and an increase of Dysphagia Handicap Index scores after 12 weeks on proton pump inhibitors and prokinetics. Conclusion Different dietary factors were present in LPR patients. A short period of empiric anti-reflux treatment has a significant improving effect on Reflux Symptom Index and Dysphagia Handicap Index scores from baseline to 12 weeks post-treatment. Further research is needed to investigate longer times of treatment for the complete resolution of symptoms.

Abstract:The high impact of COVID-19 pandemic on individuals' well-being was especially detrimental to those suffering from an eating disorder (ED). The aim of the present study was to examine the perceived adverse and beneficial effects of lockdown on people with ED symptoms from a qualitative approach. The sample was made of 129 adults ( M age = 33.63; SD age = 10.95; 78.3% women) with symptoms compatible with ED according to DSM-5-TR. Participants completed an online survey containing two open-ended questions inquiring about their lived experience regarding perceived negative and positive effects of the pandemic quarantine. Data were analyzed based on a content analysis using Atlas.ti software. In terms of negative effects, the following topics emerged: increased anxiety and perceived stress, loneliness perception, worsening symptoms and thoughts associated with ED, increased attention to body image, and detection of worse eating habits. Among the positive effects, the key themes were the ED recognition, linked to the awareness of the need to start therapy, the reduction of binge eating episodes, an increased self-esteem, a sense of protection and well-being, and improved health and eating behavior. Social isolation and the possibility to cover up ED symptomatology were also mentioned as positive features of the confinement. From a clinical viewpoint, examining positive perception on stressful events provides practitioners with therapeutic tools for treating individuals with ED based on a client-centered approach.

Effects of COVID-19 lockdown on a bariatric surgery waiting list cohort and its influence in surgical risk perception

Abstract:PurposeThe COVID-19 outbreak has forced a 2-month lockdown (LD) in Spain. We aimed to assess how that had affected our cohort of bariatric patients waiting for surgery.MethodsA review of electronic records and a structured phone interview with each patient were conducted. Changes in severity of obesity were analyzed using the Obesity Surgery Score (OSS) and changes in health-related quality of life (HRQoL) using the validated EQ-5D questionnaire. Other miscellaneous questions about behavior modifications and surgical risk perception were also analyzed.ResultsAll 51 patients fully answered the questionnaires. Mean age was 47 years and mean time on waiting list 91 days. Mean BMI increased during LD (42.7 vs 43.2; p < 0.001). Both OSS (2.84 vs 3; p = 0.011) and EQ-5D (69 vs 64; p < 0.001) mildly worsened during LD, mainly due to psychosocial issues. Twenty-seven patients (53%) thought that perioperative risks were higher under the current circumstances but they were as willing to undergo surgery as those who believed that the risks had not increased (74% vs 87%, p = 0.2).ConclusionsCOVID-19 LD had a significant but mild effect on our cohort of bariatric surgery waiting list patients. Although perioperative risk perception had increased, patients were still willing to undergo their planned surgeries.

Abstract:Introduction The arrival of the COVID-19 pandemic modified the functions of Primary Care (PC) teams, which were forced to focus their resources on the diagnosis and treatment of SARS-CoV-2 infected patients. The disrupted healthcare of individuals with pre-existing mental disorders (depression or anxiety), as well as the psychological decompensation resulting from the lockdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, may have modified the use of drugs and health resources by these patients. The aim of this study is to determine the changes in these parameters, between the 6 months prior to the lockdown (09/14/2019 to 03/15/2020) and the 6 months following its end (05/03/2020 to 11/04/2020), in a population undergoing active treatment for depression or anxiety, according to the electronic clinical record. Materials and Methods Real world data observational study of 110,694 individuals aged >16 years suffering from active or undergoing treatment for depression or anxiety according to the electronic medical records of the Aragon Regional Health Service (Spain). Pharmacological variables [daily dose per inhabitant (DHD) dispensed by pharmacies of: anxiolytics, hypnotics/sedatives, and antidepressants] and variables related to the use of healthcare resources (number of primary and specialized healthcare visits) were considered. Student’s T -tests for paired samples were performed to analyze differences between periods (pre–post). The level of significance was established at 5% ( p < 0.05). Results The use of anxiolytic drugs increased as compared to its use over the 6 months prior to the lockdown. In contrast, the consumption of antidepressants was found to decrease. The use of health resources continued to be below pre-pandemic levels, 6 months post-lockdown end. Conclusion Changes in the use of health resources could have a negative impact on the parameters of these diseases. The increase in drug use, especially benzodiazepines, may suggest a worsening of the symptoms during the lockdown and in the subsequent months. It is a worrying sign, which points to the growth of this public health problem and the need for its prevention.
