Abstract:Cooperative MIMO communication systems play an important role in the development of future sixth-generation (6G) wireless systems incorporating new technologies such as massive MIMO relay systems, dual-polarized antenna arrays, millimeter-wave communications, and, more recently, communications assisted using intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs), and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). In a companion paper, we provided an overview of cooperative communication systems from a tensor modeling perspective. The objective of the present paper is to provide a comprehensive tutorial on semi-blind receivers for MIMO one-way two-hop relay systems, allowing the joint estimation of transmitted symbols and individual communication channels with only a few pilot symbols. After a reminder of some tensor prerequisites, we present an overview of tensor models, with a detailed, unified, and original description of two classes of tensor decomposition frequently used in the design of relay systems, namely nested CPD/PARAFAC and nested Tucker decomposition (TD). Some new variants of nested models are introduced. Uniqueness and identifiability conditions, depending on the algorithm used to estimate the parameters of these models, are established. Two families of algorithms are presented: iterative algorithms based on alternating least squares (ALS) and closed-form solutions using Khatri–Rao and Kronecker factorization methods, which consist of SVD-based rank-one matrix or tensor approximations. In a second part of the paper, the overview of cooperative communication systems is completed before presenting several two-hop relay systems using different codings and configurations in terms of relaying protocol (AF/DF) and channel modeling. The aim of this presentation is firstly to show how these choices lead to different nested tensor models for the signals received at destination. Then, by capitalizing on these models and their correspondence with the generic models studied in the first part, we derive semi-blind receivers to jointly estimate the transmitted symbols and the individual communication channels for each relay system considered. In a third part, extensive Monte Carlo simulation results are presented to compare the performance of relay systems and associated semi-blind receivers in terms of the symbol error rate (SER) and channel estimate normalized mean-square error (NMSE). Their computation time is also compared. Finally, some perspectives are drawn for future research work.

Abstract:The emergence of big data and the multidimensional nature of wireless communication signals present significant opportunities for exploiting the versatility of tensor decompositions in associated data analysis and signal processing. The uniqueness of tensor decompositions, unlike matrix-based methods, can be guaranteed under very mild and natural conditions. Harnessing the power of multilinear algebra through tensor analysis in wireless signal processing, channel modeling, and parametric channel estimation provides greater flexibility in the choice of constraints on data properties and permits extraction of more general latent data components than matrix-based methods. Tensor analysis has also found applications in Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) radar because of its ability to exploit the inherent higher-dimensional signal structures therein. In this paper, we provide a broad overview of tensor analysis in wireless communications and MIMO radar. More specifically, we cover topics including basic tensor operations, common tensor decompositions via canonical polyadic and Tucker factorization models, wireless communications applications ranging from blind symbol recovery to channel parameter estimation, and transmit beamspace design and target parameter estimation in MIMO radar.

Abstract:Cooperative multiple-input multiple-output technology allows a wireless network to coordinate among distributed antennas and achieve considerable performance gains similar to those provided by conventional MIMO systems. It promises significant improvements in spectral efficiency and network coverage and is a major candidate technology in various standard proposals for the fourth-generation wireless communication systems. For the design and accurate performance assessment of cooperative MIMO systems, realistic cooperative MIMO channel models are indispensable. This article provides an overview of the state of the art in cooperative MIMO channel modeling. We show that although the existing standardized point-to-point MIMO channel models can be applied to a certain extent to model cooperative MIMO channels, many new challenges remain in cooperative MIMO channel modeling, such as how to model mobile-to-mobile channels, and how to characterize the heterogeneity and correlation of multiple links at the system level appropriately.

Abstract:Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) techniques have been widely applied in current cellular networks. To meet the ever-increasing demands on spectral efficiency and network throughput, more and more antennas are equipped at the base station, forming the well-known concept of massive MIMO. However, traditional design with fully digital precoding architecture brings high power consumption and capital expenditure. Cost- and power-efficient solutions are being intensively investigated to address these issues. Among them, both reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) and holographic MIMO (HMIMO) stand out. In this chapter, we will focus on the ongoing paradigm shift from RIS to HMIMO, covering both topics in detail. A wide range of closely related topics, e.g., use cases, hardware architectures, channel modeling and estimation, RIS beamforming, HMIMO beamforming, performance analyses of spectral- and energy-efficiency, and challenges and outlook, will be covered to show their potential to be applied in the next-generation wireless networks as well as the rationales for the technological evolution from RIS to holographic MIMO.

Abstract:Recently, the pressing desire to provide cost-effective solutions aimed at supporting high-throughput broadband wireless access with large-scale coverage has significantly changed the notion of the traditional cellular systems. Physical layer cooperation serves as an enabling technology for such a change. In latest cellular networks, neighboring infrastructure stations, such as base stations (BSs) or relay stations (RSs), share their communication resources to create virtual multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems by means of distributed transmission and signal processing. Cooperative processing at the BSs promises to exceed the limits on spectral efficiency imposed by inter-cell interference, thereby allowing ever more aggressive frequency reuse patterns. On the other hand, cooperation between BSs and RSs, as well as among RSs, is expected to extend coverage and capacity of point-to-multipoint links between BSs and mobile stations in a highly economical fashion. However, to achieve such benefits in practice, numerous research challenges have to be still tackled. This special issue has come up with the intention of collecting cutting-edge research achievements in cooperative MIMO multicell systems. For this special issue, we have received 35 manuscript submissions altogether. After a careful review process, 10 manuscripts have been accepted for publication, which cover the following topics for cooperative MIMO multicell networks: channel modeling, power control and scheduling, interference management, protocol design and performance analysis, cost deployment, simulation tools and testbeds. A brief introduction of all the accepted manuscripts is reported in the following. In the manuscript “A Geometrical Three-Ring-Based Model for MIMO Mobile-to-Mobile Fading Channels in Cooperative Networks” by Talha and Patzold [1], a stochastic narrowband MIMO mobile-to-mobile reference channel model is derived in relay-based cooperative networks and exact closed-form expressions for different correlation functions are provided, under isotropic as well as non-isotropic scattering conditions. A stochastic simulation model is drawn from the reference model. It is shown that the cross-correlation functions of the simulation model closely approximate the corresponding ones of the reference model. In the article “Adaptive Coordinated Reception for Multicell MIMO Uplink” by Lu et al. [2], power control and receive beamforming are jointly optimized with adaptive selection of multiple BSs to minimize the total transmit power, under individual signal-to-interferenceplus-noise ratio constraint per mobile station. To reduce the complexity in the large-scale cellular network, a suboptimal algorithm is derived, which exhibits a good trade-off between performance and complexity if the number of the pre-selected BSs is carefully chosen. In the article “Virtual Cooperation for Throughput Maximization in Distributed Large-Scale Wireless Networks” by Abouei et al. [3], a distributed wireless network with K links is con-sidered, where the links are partitioned into M clusters each operating in a subchannel with bandwidth W/M. The power allocation and number of clusters of such a network are optimized for maximization of the throughput as the number of links approaches infinity. In the article “Distributed Cooperative Precoding with Power Control for Cellular Systems with Correlated Antennas at the Receiver” by Vinosh Babu James et al. [4], the authors consider an analytical model for a multicell and multiuser system with receiver-side correlation. A distributed protocol for cooperation amongst the BSs is also proposed. System performance gains measured in terms of mean and cell-edge spectral efficiency values are reported. In the article “Multimode Transmission in Network MIMO Downlink with Incomplete CSI” by Seifi et al. [5], a two-step scheduling algorithm for a cooperative multicell MIMO downlink is proposed: in the first step, joint user and mode selection is performed, whereas, in the second step, feedback and precoder design is carried out by only considering the users selected in the first step. Abstract:Antennas of transmitters and receivers have been manipulated to increase the capacity of transmission and reception of signals. Using many elements in antennas to shape beams and direct nulls in a particular point for optimum signal transmission and reception has over decades, had tremendous positive influence in received power and signal to noise ratio (SNR). However, since the antenna elements manipulation can be done both at base station and device terminal, it gives rise to an important method of using several antennas to put and obtain signals to and from space with increased capacity. This principle is termed Multiple-input and Multiple-output (MIMO). This paper discusses application of MIMO in the state of the art and next generation of wireless systems (5G). Abstract:Benefitting from the vast spatial degrees of freedom, the amalgamation of integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) and massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) is expected to simultaneously improve spectral and energy efficiencies as well as the sensing capability. However, a large number of antennas deployed in massive MIMO-ISAC raises critical challenges in acquiring both accurate channel state information and target parameter information. To overcome these two challenges with a unified framework, we first analyze their underlying system models and then propose a novel tensor-based approach that addresses both the channel estimation and target sensing problems. Specifically, by parameterizing the high-dimensional communication channel exploiting a small number of physical parameters, we associate the channel state information with the sensing parameters of targets in terms of angular, delay, and Doppler dimensions. Then, we propose a shared training pattern adopting the same time-frequency resources such that both the channel estimation and target parameter estimation can be formulated as a canonical polyadic decomposition problem with a similar mathematical expression. Tensor-based modeling/estimation of static channels in IRS-assisted MIMO systems

Abstract:This paper proposes a tensor-based parametric modeling and estimation framework in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems assisted by intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs). We present two algorithms that exploit the tensor structure of the received pilot signal to estimate the concatenated channel. The first one is an iterative solution based on the alternating least squares algorithm. In contrast, the second method provides closed-form estimates of the involved parameters using the high order single value decomposition. Our numerical results show that our proposed tensor-based methods provide improved performance compared to competing state-of-the-art channel estimation schemes, thanks to the exploitation of the algebraic tensor structure of the combined channel without additional computational complexity.

Abstract:In this paper, a tensor-based joint channel parameter estimation and information symbol detection scheme is developed for millimeter wave (mmWave) massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems. At the base station (BS), the information symbols are encoded according to the Khatri-Rao space-time (KRST) method and transmitted through time-varying channels. The received signals at the mobile station (MS) are constructed into a nested complex-valued parallel factor (PARAFAC) model, which contains an outer model and an inner model, respectively. With outer model, we estimate the compound channel matrix and detect the information symbols considering the sparse scattering nature of mmWave channels. With inner model, we extract physical parameters, including angles of arrival/departure (AoAs/AoDs), Doppler shifts and complex path gains from the estimated compound channel matrix. These physical parameters can be used to significantly reduce feedback overhead. A tricky way here is that we convert complex inner-submodel into a real one such that the computational complexity is reduced. Compared with existing schemes, the proposed one improves the estimation accuracy with low computational complexity, and is applicable for both uniform linear arrays (ULAs) and uniform planar arrays (UPAs). Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed joint channel estimation and information symbol detection scheme.

Abstract:Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels provide an abstract and unified representation of different physical communication systems, ranging from multi-antenna wireless channels to wireless digital subscriber line systems. They have the key property that several data streams can be simultaneously established.In general, the design of communication systems for MIMO channels is quite involved (if one can assume the use of sufficiently long and good codes, then the problem formulation simplifies drastically). The first difficulty lies on how to measure the global performance of such systems given the tradeoff on the performance among the different data streams. Once the problem formulation is defined, the resulting mathematical problem is typically too complicated to be optimally solved as it is a matrix-valued nonconvex optimization problem. This design problem has been studied for the past three decades (the first papers dating back to the 1970s) motivated initially by cable systems and more recently by wireless multi-antenna systems. The approach was to choose a specific global measure of performance and then to design the system accordingly, either optimally or suboptimally, depending on the difficulty of the problem.This text presents an up-to-date unified mathematical framework for the design of point-to-point MIMO transceivers with channel state information at both sides of the link according to an arbitrary cost function as a measure of the system performance. In addition, the framework embraces the design of systems with given individual performance on the data streams.Majorization theory is the underlying mathematical theory on which the framework hinges. It allows the transformation of the originally complicated matrix-valued nonconvex problem into a simple scalar problem. In particular, the additive majorization relation plays a key role in the design of linear MIMO transceivers (i.e., a linear precoder at the transmitter and a linear equalizer at the receiver), whereas the multiplicative majorization relation is the basis for nonlinear decision-feedback MIMO transceivers (i.e., a linear precoder at the transmitter and a decision-feedback equalizer at the receiver).

Abstract:In this paper, a novel unified channel model framework is proposed for cooperative multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) wireless channels. The proposed model framework is generic and adaptable to multiple cooperative MIMO scenarios by simply adjusting key model parameters. Based on the proposed model framework and using a typical cooperative MIMO communication environment as an example, we derive a novel geometry-based stochastic model (GBSM) applicable to multiple wireless propagation scenarios. The proposed GBSM is the first cooperative MIMO channel model that has the ability to investigate the impact of the local scattering density (LSD) on channel characteristics. From the derived GBSM, the corresponding multi-link spatial correlation functions are derived and numerically analyzed in detail.

Abstract:Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) wireless communication system, which is also called Multiple-Antenna system, is well known as one of the most important technologies and widely studied nowadays (Winters, 1987; Foschini & Gans, 1998; Marzetta & Hochwald, 1999; Raleigh & Cioffi, 1998). The main idea of MIMO wireless communication is to utilize the spatial degree of freedom of the wireless multi-path channel by adopting multiple antennas at both transmit and receive ends to improve spectrum efficiency and transmission quality of the wireless communication systems. MIMO technology is able to extremely improve the transmission data rates and alleviate the conflict between the increasing demand of wireless services and the scarce of electromagnetic spectrum. Two famous techniques of the MIMO systems are spatial multiplexing (SM) and transmit diversity (TD) (Nabar et al, 2002). In the scheme of SM, multiple data pipes between transmit and receive ends provide multiplexing gain to dramatically increase the channel capacity linearly with the number of antennas (Telatar, 1999; Bolcskei et al, 2002). The TD technologies, such as space-time coding, are adopted to improve the link reliability of wireless communication, especially in the multi-path fading channels (Marzetta & Hochwald, 1999; Tarokh et al, 1998; Bolcskei et al, 2001). The channel knowledge is not required in the transmit end for TD technologies. MIMO is the key technology for future wireless communication systems, such as 3GPP LTE, WiMAX 802.16, IEEE 802.20, IMT-Advanced and so on.

Abstract:Filter bank-based multicarrier (FBMC) systems are currently being considered as a prevalent candidate for replacing the long established cyclic prefix (CP)-based orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CP-OFDM) in the physical layer of next generation communications systems. In particular, FBMC/OQAM has received increasing attention due to, among other features, its potential for maximum spectral efficiency. It suffers, however, from an intrinsic self-interference effect, which complicates signal processing tasks at the receiver, including synchronization, channel estimation and equalization. In a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) configuration, the multi-antenna interference has also to be taken into account. (Semi-)blind FBMC/OQAM receivers have been little studied so far and mainly for single-antenna systems. The problem of joint channel estimation and data detection in a MIMO-FBMC/OQAM system, given limited or no training information, is studied in this paper through a tensor-based approach in the light of the success of such techniques in OFDM applications. Simulation-based comparisons with CP-OFDM are included, for realistic transmission models.

Abstract:In this letter, we consider an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-aided information monitoring scheme in a multiple input multiple output (MIMO) communication system. According to the tensor structure of the communication links, an information monitoring receiver is proposed. The receiver is based on the generalized tensor contraction (GTC), which exploits a nested parallel factor (PARAFAC) model for the received signals, via an iterative least squares (LS) algorithm to jointly monitor the data symbols transmitted from the users via the base stations. Compared with some competing receivers, our simulation results demonstrate the superiority of the proposed GTC-LS receiver in terms of normalized mean square error and bit error rate.

Abstract:To capture the essence of electromagnetic propagation in arbitrary scattering, the holographic MIMO (HMIMO) channel is usually modeled by a Fourier plane-wave series expansion. HMIMO channel estimation, whose mathematical formulation is significantly varied, reminiscent of conventional sparse recovery solutions may result in unprecedented challenges. In this paper, we propose a tensor modalized channel estimation approach for efficient holographic communications. Specially, Fourier plane wave-based channel is formulated as a 2-mode tensor by jointly employing the physical dimensions of the transmitter and the receiver, enabling the extraction of high-dimensional electromagnetic characteristics. The channel estimation problem is further modeled as a 3-mode sparse tensor reconstruction issue by exploiting spatial characteristics of wireless channels, wherein an additional tensor dimension is added for the information union of various channel slices. Tensor compressive sampling matching pursuit (TCoSaMP) is elaborated based on a multiple selection mechanism, with theoretical guarantees derived from the perspective of a high-dimensional tensor. Furthermore, detailed complexity analysis demonstrates the efficiency of TCoSaMP. Simulation results validate that the proposed method offers improvements in both accuracy and computational efficiency.

Abstract:This article presents a tutorial on multiuser multiple-antenna wireless systems with a very large number of antennas, known as massive multi-input multi-output (MIMO) systems. Signal processing challenges and future trends in the area of massive MIMO systems are presented and key application scenarios are detailed. A linear algebra approach is considered for the description of the system and data models of massive MIMO architectures. The operational requirements of massive MIMO systems are discussed along with their operation in time-division duplexing mode, resource allocation and calibration requirements. In particular, transmit and receiver processing algorithms are examined in light of the specific needs of massive MIMO systems. Simulation results illustrate the performance of transmit and receive processing algorithms under scenarios of interest. Key problems are discussed and future trends in the area of massive MIMO systems are pointed out.
Towards Unified AI Models for MU-MIMO Communications: A Tensor Equivariance Framework

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a unified framework based on equivariance for the design of artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted technologies in multi-user multiple-input-multiple-output (MU-MIMO) systems. We first provide definitions of multidimensional equivariance, high-order equivariance, and multidimensional invariance (referred to collectively as tensor equivariance). On this basis, by investigating the design of precoding and user scheduling, which are key techniques in MU-MIMO systems, we delve deeper into revealing tensor equivariance of the mappings from channel information to optimal precoding tensors, precoding auxiliary tensors, and scheduling indicators, respectively. To model mappings with tensor equivariance, we propose a series of plug-and-play tensor equivariant neural network (TENN) modules, where the computation involving intricate parameter sharing patterns is transformed into concise tensor operations. Building upon TENN modules, we propose the unified tensor equivariance framework that can be applicable to various communication tasks, based on which we easily accomplish the design of corresponding AI-assisted precoding and user scheduling schemes. Simulation results demonstrate that the constructed precoding and user scheduling methods achieve near-optimal performance while exhibiting significantly lower computational complexity and generalization to inputs with varying sizes across multiple dimensions. This validates the superiority of TENN modules and the unified framework.

Abstract:MIMO technology has been widely applied in terrestrial wireless communications due to its high spectral efficiency in the presence of rich multi-paths. The benefits of MIMO in airborne communications, however, have not been fully recognized. The lack of scattering in the airborne environment may lead one to incorrectly believe that the spectral efficiency gain of an airborne MIMO is rather limited. In this article, we describe how spatial multiplexing gain can be obtained in airborne environments by antenna system design rather than natural scattering. In particular, we will focus on two techniques: the use of dual polarized antennas and the choice of antenna separation relative to the carrier wavelength. We present both field test results and computer simulations demonstrating the benefits of MIMO in airborne environments.

Abstract:The increasing demand for wireless data transfer has been the driving force behind the widespread adoption of Massive MIMO (multiple-input multiple-output) technology in 5G. The next-generation MIMO technology is now being developed to cater to the new data traffic and performance expectations generated by new user devices and services in the next decade. The evolution towards "ultra-massive MIMO (UM-MIMO)" is not only about adding more antennas but will also uncover new propagation and hardware phenomena that can only be treated by jointly utilizing insights from the communication, electromagnetic (EM), and circuit theory areas. This article offers a comprehensive overview of the key benefits of the UM-MIMO technology and the associated challenges. It explores massive multiplexing facilitated by radiative near-field effects, characterizes the spatial degrees-of-freedom, and practical channel estimation schemes tailored for massive arrays. Moreover, we provide a tutorial on EM theory and circuit theory, and how it is used to obtain physically consistent antenna and channel models. Subsequently, the article describes different ways to implement massive and dense antenna arrays, and how to co-design antennas with signal processing. The main open research challenges are identified at the end.
