Abstract:For revealing the mechanism of allelopathic influence on phytoplankton by aquatic macrophytes, the growth and photosynthetic activities of cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa and the chlorophyte Selenastrum capricornutum were investigated when they coexisted with submerged macrophyte Myriophyllum spicatum and were exposed to allelopathic polyphenols: pyrogallic acid (PA), gallic acid (GA), ellagic acid (EA) and (+)-catechin (CA). According to the results of coexistence assays, the non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) and effective quantum efficiency (YII) of M. aeruginosa were affected earlier and more rapidly than the cell density. However, the influence of M. spicatum on S. capricornutum was not found. When the Toxicity Index (TI) was applied to evaluate the combined effects of binary and multiple mixtures of polyphenols, it was found that the four tested polyphenols with the proportion identified in the M. spicatum-cultured solution were observed to present synergistic effect (0.36-0.49) according to the cell density, NPQ and YII of M. aeruginosa. With the combined effects of polyphenols on S. capricornutum, only additive action (0.52-1.62) was found. On the other hand, PA (2.97mgL(-1)), GA (2.65mgL(-1)) caused significant reductions of photosystem II (PSII) and whole electron transport chain activities of M. aeruginosa by 71.43 and 18.37%, 70.95 and 40.77% (P<0.05), respectively, after 24-h exposure, but no inhibition effect was found in S. capricornutum. The dark respiration and photosystem I (PSI) activities of M. aeruginosa were significantly increased by exposure to PA and GA (P<0.05). Nevertheless, EA and CA had no influence on the electron transport activities of the tested organisms. These results indicate that the reduction in photosynthetic activity of M. aeruginosa and the synergistic effect of allelochemicals may be two important causes for the inhibition of undesired phytoplankton by submersed macrophytes in natural aquatic ecosystems, and PSII in cyanobacteria is considered to be one of the target sites attacked by allelopathic polyphenols.

Abstract:Present agricultural production typically depends on the intensive use of synthetic pesticides with potentially harmful consequences for humans and the environment. To ensure food security for the rapidly rising global population it is necessary to develop more sustainable alternatives to synthetic pesticides. Microalgae possess a large diversity in antimicrobial compounds and are considered one of the most promising sustainable sources of novel biopesticides. Antimicrobial activities of 15 microalgae strains were investigated against a selection of seven common plant pathogens relevant to agricultural production. Several microalgae were identified posessing antimicrobial activity, with an extract of Chlorella sorokiniana showing the strongest growth inhibition of the plant pathogen Phytophthora cactorum . Different pre-treatments like freeze-drying, solvents with different polarities, and extraction methods were analyzed in regards to the level of antimicrobial activity of C. sorokiniana . The best C. sorokiniana extract demonstrated potential for biopesticide application on strawberry leaves infected with P. cactorum . This study reveals the potential of microalgae as natural biopesticide for organic or more sustainable regular agriculture.

Harnessing the potential of microalgae-based systems for mitigating pesticide pollution and its impact on their metabolism

Abstract:Due to increased pesticide usage in agriculture, a significant concentration of pesticides is reported in the environment that can directly impact humans, aquatic flora, and fauna. Utilizing microalgae-based systems for pesticide removal is becoming more popular because of their environmentally friendly nature, ability to degrade pesticide molecules into simpler, nontoxic molecules, and cost-effectiveness of the technology. Thus, this review focused on the efficiency, mechanisms, and factors governing pesticide removal using microalgae-based systems and their effect on microalgal metabolism. A wide range of pesticides, like atrazine, cypermethrin, malathion, trichlorfon, thiacloprid, etc., can be effectively removed by different microalgal strains. Some species of Chlorella, Chlamydomonas, Scenedesmus, Nostoc, etc., are documented for >90% removal of different pesticides, mainly through the biodegradation mechanism. The antioxidant enzymes such as ascorbate peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase, as well as the complex structure of microalgae cell walls, are mainly involved in eliminating pesticides and are also crucial for the defense mechanism of microalgae against reactive oxygen species. However, higher pesticide concentrations may alter the biochemical composition and gene expression associated with microalgal growth and metabolism, which may vary depending on the type of strain, the pesticide type, and the concentration. The final section of this review discussed the challenges and prospects of how microalgae can become a successful tool to remediate pesticides.
Screening of plant extracts for a microcosm in vivo test of inhibition of the toxic bloom-forming cyanobacteria Chrysosporum ovalisporum

Abstract:Freshwater eutrophication is an increasing ecological and public health concern. One of the major consequences of eutrophication is the formation of harmful algal blooms (HABs), a rapid population increase and accumulation of microorganisms, namely algae and cyanobacteria. In this project, we aim to investigate a nature based solution to this environmental hazard. Our approach consisted in the evaluation of the potential of aquatic plants to control the growth and viability of Chrysosporum ovalisporum, a cyanobacteria species associated with HABs and that produces toxic metabolites such as cylindrospermopsin. First, we carried out a screening with different plant species – Iris pseudacoros , Typha latifolia , Sparganium erectum , Alisma plantago-aquatica , Alisma lanceolatum , Nasturtium officinale , Landoltia punctata , Lemna minor and Wolffia arrhiza – for the allelopathic effect of their extracts on this cyanobacteria. For this purpose, methanol/water (70:30, v:v) mixture extracts were prepared and tested, at various concentrations, in C. ovalisporum cultures. Exposure to L. punctata extracts at the highest concentration tested (2 mg L −1 ) showed significant cellular abundance inhibitory effects on C. ovalisporum . Secondly, a microcosm system was assembled to evaluate the effects of co-growth of C. ovalisporum and L. punctata . In this experiment, we tested the effect of the presence of this plant on C. ovalisporum cell abundance, under a nutritional surplus and equivalent cyanobacterial light exposure in between test and control groups. The results confirmed the allelopathic effect of L. punctata on C. ovalisporum . This work demonstrates that the allelopathic properties of aquatic plants could be exploited to control the growth of harmful algae, and could be used to develop novel, eco-friendly and practical solutions, for treatment of water contaminated with C. ovalisporum .

Abstract:Pesticides are chemical substances that have become essential for global food production. However, their extensive use has resulted in significant environmental and health costs. Among the most widely used are diazinon and methamidophos, an insecticide and acaricide, respectively. These chemicals are classified as highly hazardous with high toxicity upon contact, ingestion, and inhalation. They are known to cause mutagenic effects, cancer, damage to the endocrine and nervous systems of humans, and their high solubility makes them likely to be found in soil, water, air, and certain foods. In this research, we evaluated the use of the microalga Chlorella vulgaris for phycoremediation of these two pesticides. The first step was to establish and optimize the growth parameters of C. vulgaris to maintain the microalgae in a state of reproduction. Favorable results were obtained at pH 7.0, a dilution ratio of 1:2 for the culture medium, and a photoperiod of 12 h of light and 12 h of darkness. Subsequently, the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and the Half-Maximal Effective Concentration (EC 50 ) of the pesticides diazinon and methamidophos were evaluated. The microalga exhibited a high tolerance rate, with concentrations exceeding those naturally found in the environment. Based on these results, the conditions for assessing the biodegradation of both pesticides by the microalga were established. The outcome showed degradation percentages of 96 % for diazinon (25 mg L −1 ) and 100 % for methamidophos (500 mg L −1 ). In addition, the analysis of intermediate metabolites during the biodegradation process of both pesticides revealed the formation of less toxic compounds compared to the precursors and possibly complete mineralization as well; this given the positive response in terms of inorganic phosphate generation during the degradation. Finally, we propose biodegradation pathways for methamidophos and diazinon based on the detected metabolites and available information on biodegradation by certain bacteria.

Enantioselective Ecotoxicity of the Herbicide Dichlorprop and Complexes Formed with Chitosan in Two Fresh Water Green Algae

Abstract:To reduce the leaching potential, to prevent groundwater contamination and to maintain the efficacy of a pesticide, natural polysaccharides have received increasing attention due to their biocompatibility and useful biological reactivity for controlled release formulations (CRFs) of pesticides. In this paper, the toxicities of the chiral herbicide dichlorprop (DCPP) and its complexes with chitosan molecules (DCPP-CS) and chitosan nanoparticles (DCPP-NP) to two different green algae were determined and compared. The inhibition rates of DCPP, DCPP-CS and DCPP-NP were determined at 24, 48, 72, 96, 120, 144, 168 h, and the results show that (S)-DCPP was more toxic to Chlorella vulgaris than (R)-DCPP, while the (R)-DCPP was more toxic to Scenedesmus obliquus than (S)-DCPP. The study also found that the chiral selectivity of DCPP to Chlorella vulgaris and Scenedesmus obliquus could be changed when DCPP was complexed with chitosan molecules (CS) or chitosan nanoparticles (NP). For Chlorella vulgaris, the order of inhibition was (R)-DCPP-CS > (S)-DCPP-CS and (R)-DCPP-NP > (S)-DCPP-NP; for Scenedesmus obliquus, the order was (S)-DCPP-CS > (R)-DCPP-CS and (S)DCPP-NP > (R)-DCPP-NP. This phenomenon suggests that the enantioselective behaviors of chiral compounds might shift when interactions with other chiral receptors coexist in different biological environments. Additionally, chitosan molecules and chitosan nanoparticles also showed different toxicities, which could be ascribed to the difference in the physicochemical properties between CS and NP or the differences in the cell walls of the two fresh water green algae.
Therapeutic Potential of Microalgae-Derived Bioactive Metabolites Is Influenced by Different Large-Scale Culture Strategies

Abstract:Microalgae have been identified as one of the most promising sources of novel bioactive compounds for biomedical applications, the food industry, and cosmetics. In the last decade, several biotechnological developments have facilitated the identification of a growing number of compounds as well as the study of optimal microalgae culture conditions for the production of biomass enriched in specific molecules of interest. In this study, two common commercial marine microalgae (Nannochloropsis oculata and Porphyridium purpureum) were cultured in standard and nutrient-stressed conditions and the obtained biomass extracts were assessed for their potential to inhibit cancer cell proliferation and migration as well as their antioxidant activity. Results from viability in 2D and 3D cancer cell models showed an enhancement of the antitumour activity of P. purpureum in the 3D model compared to 2D, together with a greater capacity to reduce the migration capacity of cancer cells with the biomass from nutrient-stressed conditions, whereas the antioxidant activity of N. oculata decreased when exposed to nutrient-stressed conditions. To date, this is one of the few studies that proves that controlled changes in large-scale culturing conditions such as nutrient depletion have a relevant impact in the bioactivity of the biomass on cancer cells.

Abstract:Cyanobacteria are found globally due to their adaptation to various environments. The occurrence of cyanobacterial blooms is not a new phenomenon. The bloom-forming and toxin-producing species have been a persistent nuisance all over the world over the last decades. Evidence suggests that this trend might be attributed to a complex interplay of direct and indirect anthropogenic influences. To control cyanobacterial blooms, various strategies, including physical, chemical, and biological methods have been proposed. Nevertheless, the use of those strategies is usually not effective. The isolation of natural compounds from many aquatic and terrestrial plants and seaweeds has become an alternative approach for controlling harmful algae in aquatic systems. Seaweeds have received attention from scientists because of their bioactive compounds with antibacterial, antifungal, anti-microalgae, and antioxidant properties. The undesirable effects of cyanobacteria proliferations and potential control methods are here reviewed, focusing on the use of potent bioactive compounds, isolated from seaweeds, against microalgae and cyanobacteria growth.

Abstract:Marine and extreme environments harbor a huge diversity of microorganisms able to produce new bioactive metabolites with beneficial health effects. In this study, ethanol, aqueous, methanol, and acetone extracts and protein hydrolysates were obtained from five different microalgae species and two haloarchaea. An in vitro study of cytotoxicity, migration, angiogenic effect, antioxidant capacity, and modulation of detoxifying enzyme expression was carried out using resistant (HCT-15) and non-resistant (T84) colon cancer tumor lines. Our results showed that the aqueous extract of the microalga Chlorella sorokiniana induced the greatest cytotoxic effect in both cell lines, while the ethanolic extracts of the archaea Haloarcula hispanica and Halobacterium salinarum caused the greatest inhibition on the migratory capacity. Meanwhile, the protein hydrolyzate and the aqueous extract of the microalga Chlorella sorokiniana significantly protected cells against hydrogen peroxide damage. Moreover, the aqueous extracts of Haloarcula hispanica and Halobacterium salinarum resulted in inducing the greatest increase in the activity of the detoxifying enzymes enzyme quinone oxidoreductase and glutathione S-transferase. These preliminary results suggest that aqueous extracts of some microalgae and haloarchaea may be promising candidates for an adjuvant therapy against colorectal cancer. However, additional research is required to identify the active principles and elucidate the mechanisms of action involved.

Abstract:As microalgae are producers of proteins, lipids, polysaccharides, pigments, vitamins and unique secondary metabolites, microalgal biotechnology has gained attention in recent decades. Microalgae can be used for biomass production and to obtain biotechnologically important products. Here, we present the application of a method of producing a natural, biologically active composite obtained from unicellular microalgae of the genus Planktochlorella sp. as a modulator of the growth of microorganisms that can be used in the cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries by exploiting the phenomenon of photo-reprogramming of metabolism. The combination of red and blue light allows the collection of biomass with unique biochemical profiles, especially fatty acid composition (Patent Application P.429620). The ethanolic and water extracts of algae biomass inhibited the growth of a number of pathogenic bacteria, namely Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus PCM 458, Streptococcus pyogenes PCM 2318, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli PCM 2209 and Candida albicans ATCC 14053. The algal biocomposite obtained according to our procedure can be used also as a prebiotic supplement. The presented technology may allow the limitation of the use of antibiotics and environmentally harmful chemicals commonly used in preparations against Enterococcus faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli or Candida spp.

Abstract:Eutrophication leads a mass of algae, and algae bloom directly influence the ecological function of water bodies and the safety of drinking water. It is very important to control the growth and reproduction of blooming algae for fishery, industrial and agricultural production as well as for the health of humans. Although some methods have been proposed to control harmful algal growth, only a few are applicable due to high cost, secondary pollution, or impracticability. The commonly used algicides, such as copper (Cu2+) and organic herbicide, can inhibit the entire phytoplankton community and cause subsequent water quality deterioration that may stress or kill aquatic animals. Furthermore, copper might accumulate in the bodies of aquatic predators, and herbicides might be toxic to all the living species in the water body. Therefore, it is necessary to explore an effective and secure new method to control the growth of harmful algae. Submerged macrophytes can reduce harmful algae blooms to maintain clear water in natural and experimental aquatic ecosystems. Using allelochemicals, which were produced by some macrophytes, to inhibit the growth of some harmful algae has been reported, but the allelopathic effects of alkaloids from submerged macrophytes were not found. In this study, the alkaloids of Elodea nuttallii were extracted by ethanol and then fractionated with some chemical reagent. The alkaloids compounds were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Mass fragments of the components were compared to the mass fragmentation data contained in the NIST 02. 9 alkaloids were identified from Elodea nuttallii by GC-MS, and the allelopathic effects of the alkaloids were also explored by bioassay of Microcystin aeruginosa. The alkaloids from Elodea nuttallii inhibited obviously to the growth of M. aeruginosa with the inhibition rate of 44.0% for three days, when the concentration of alkaloids were 62.0 mg/L. The alkaloids were a complicated mixture, which further purification was a challenging job. The detailed components of alkaloids were not clear now, but the result of bioassay showed that there were active constituents in alkaloids which provide a useful information for further study of the allelochemical in submerged macrophytes.
Proteomics Reveals Damaging Effect of Alpha-Cypermethrin Exposure in a Non-Target Freshwater Microalga Chlorella sp. NC-MKM

Abstract:Alpha-cypermethrin, a pyrethroid pesticide, is frequently used on crops to prevent insect attacks. However, occasionally, due to drift, leaching, or with rainwater, it enters the aquatic environment and poses a serious threat to the growth of non-target aquatic organisms. In the current study, we were interested in investigating the damaging effect of alpha-cypermethrin on a local freshwater non-target green alga Chlorella sp. NC-MKM in terms of its protein levels. This was achieved by exposing Chlorella sp. NC-MKM to an EC 50 concentration of alpha-cypermethrin for 1 day, followed by the two-dimensional (2-D) gel electrophoresis and MALDI-TOF MS. Fifty-three proteins, which had showed significant differential accumulation (> 1.5 fold, P < 0.05) after exposure to alpha-cypermethrin, were considered as differentially accumulated proteins (DAPs). These DAPs were further divided into several functional categories, and the expressions of each in control and treatment samples were compared. Comparison revealed that alpha-cypermethrin exposure affects the accumulation of proteins related with photosynthesis, stress response, carbohydrate metabolism, signal transduction and transporters, translation, transcription, cell division, lipid metabolism, amino acid and nucleotide biosynthesis, secondary metabolites production, and post-translational modification, and thus rendered the tested algal isolate sensitive toward this pesticide. The overall findings of this research thus offer a fundamental understanding of the possible mechanism of action of the insecticide alpha-cypermethrin on the microalga Chlorella sp. NC-MKM and also suggest potential biomarkers for the investigation of pesticide exposed microalgae.

Effect of Allelochemicals on Photosynthetic and Antioxidant Defense System of Ulva Prolifera.

Abstract:Ulva prolifera is a macroalgae that forms massive blooms, negatively impacting natural communities, aquaculture operations and recreation. The effects of the natural products, eugenol, β-myrcene, citral and nonanoic acid on the growth rate, antioxidative defense system and photosynthesis of Ulva prolifera were investigated as a possible control strategy for this harmful taxon. Negative effects on growth were observed with all four chemicals, due to the excessive production of reactive oxygen species and oxidative damage to the thalli. However, the response of U. prolifera under the four chemicals stress was different at the cellular level. β-myrcene, the most effective compound in terms of growth inhibition, induced oxidative stress as shown by the damage of total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and the downregulation of the glutathione-ascorbate (GSH-ASA) cycle which inhibited the antioxidative system. This chemical also inhibited photosynthesis and photoprotection mechanisms in U. prolifera, resulting in growth limitation. In contrast, U. prolifera was less affected by the second tested chemical, eugenol, and showed no significant change on photosynthetic efficiency in the presence of the chemical. The inhibition effects of the third and fourth tested chemicals, nonanoic acid and citralon, on growth and on the antioxidant defense system in U. prolifera were inferior. These results provide a potential avenue for controlling green tides in the future.

Abstract:Two fractions of secondary metabolites which inhibited the growth of green alga Chlorella pyrenoidosa, was isolated by several separation techniques from the ethanol extract of the macrophyte, Phragmites communis Tris. The EC50 of the two fractions on C. pyrenoidosa were 0.68 mg/L (the fraction of acidic solvent) and 2.65 mg/L (the fraction of alkaline solvent), respectively. Further purification of the allelochemicals in the acidic solvent by alkaline aluminum oxide column chromatography revealed that this fraction containing inhibiting allelochemicals and stimulating allelochemicals. The inhibiting allelochemicals showed more inhibitory effect and the EC50 was 0.50 mg/L. The result suggests that allelochemicals in P. communis can be used as an algae-inhibitor.

Abstract:Macroalgae are known as abundant sources of phytochemicals, which offer a plethora of beneficial biological properties. Besides being the most notable classes of compounds found in macroalgae, phlorotannins, bromophenols, and terpenoids comprise some of the most relevant for their biological properties. Phlorotannins, mainly prevalent in brown algae and structurally characterized as complex polyphenolic compounds derived from phloroglucinol units, possess robust antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, and cytotoxic activities, modulated by factors such as the degree of polymerization and environmental conditions. Bromophenols, halogenated compounds found in algae and other marine organisms, exhibit significant antioxidant and antiviral properties. Their diverse structures and bromination patterns contribute to their potential as therapeutic and chemical defense agents. Pigments (chemically described as primary terpenoids) play a critical role in light absorption and energy transfer in macroalgae and are divided into three main groups: (i) carotenoids, which are primarily found in brown algae and provide photoprotective and antioxidant benefits; (ii) chlorophylls, known for facilitating the conversion of light into biological energy; and (iii) phycobilins, which are mostly found in red algae and play important roles in light absorption and energy transfer, besides providing remarkable health benefits. Finally, secondary terpenoids, which are particularly abundant in red algae (e.g., the Rhodomelaceae family) are central to cellular interactions and exhibit significant antioxidant, antimicrobial, antidiabetic, and anti-inflammatory properties. This study represents a detailed analysis of the biosynthesis, structural diversity, and biological activities of these macroalgae metabolites, emphasizing their potential biological properties.

Abstract:Identifying potent bacterial algicidal agents is essential for the development of effective, safe, and economically viable algaecides. Challenges in isolating and purifying these substances from complex secretions have impeded progress in this field. Metabolomics profiling, an efficient strategy for identifying metabolites, was pioneered in identifying bacterial algicidal substances in this study. Extracellular secretions from different generations of the algicidal bacterium Brevibacillus sp. were isolated for comprehensive analysis. Specifically, a higher algicidal efficacy was observed in the secretion from Generation 3 (G3) of Brevibacillus sp. compared to Generation 1 (G1). Subsequent metabolomics profiling comparing G3 and 1 revealed 83 significantly up-regulated metabolites, of which 9 were identified as potential algicidal candidates. Back-validation highlighted the potency of 4-acetamidobutanoic acid (4-ABC) and 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQL), which exhibited robust algicidal activity with 3d-EC 50 values of 6.40 mg/L and 92.90 μg/L, respectively. These substances disrupted photosynthetic activity in M. aeruginosa by ceasing electron transfer in PSII, like the impact exerted by Brevibacillus sp. secretion. These findings confirmed that 4-ABC and 8-HQL were the main algicidal components derived from Brevibacillus sp.. Thus, this study presents a streamlined strategy for identifying bacterial algicidal substances and unveils two novel and highly active algicidal substances. Environmental Implication Harmful cyanobacterial blooms (HCBs) pose significant environmental problems and health effects to humans and other organisms. The increasing frequency of HCBs has emerged as a pressing global concern. Bacterial-derived algicidal substances are expected to serve as effective, safe, and economically viable algaecides against HCBs. This study presents a streamlined strategy for identifying bacterial algicidal substances and unveils two novel substances (4-ABC and 8-HQL). These two substances demonstrate remarkable algicidal activity and disrupt the photosynthetic system in M. aeruginosa . They hold potential as prospective algaecides for addressing HCBs.

Abstract:This study explores the use of algae for phycoremediation, focusing on how Chlorella sorokiniana and Anabaena laxa detoxify water contaminated with captan, a common fungicide. The efficiency of these species in absorbing captan and the associated biochemical changes were evaluated to assess their potential for environmental protection. Microalgae were exposed to captan concentrations of 15 and 30 mg/L, and various parameters, including captan uptake, chlorophyll (Chl) a, carotenoid levels, and changes in metabolic profiles (soluble carbohydrates, organic acids, amino acids, and fatty acids), were measured. Results showed Anabaena had a higher captan absorption capacity (141.7 µg/g at 15 mg/L and 239.3 µg/g at 30 mg/L) compared to Chlorella (74.43 µg/g and 162 µg/g). Increased captan uptake reduced the growth of both species, as indicated by lower Chl a levels. Both species accumulated osmo-protectants and antioxidants as defense mechanisms, with soluble sugars increasing by 83.49% in Chlorella and 68.87% in Anabaena, and carotenoids increasing by 60.42% and 46.24%, respectively. Principal component analysis revealed distinct species-level responses, with Anabaena showing greater tolerance. The study concludes that both species can effectively remediate captan, with Anabaena being more efficient, indicating their potential for mitigating agrochemical impacts in aquatic environments and promoting sustainable agriculture and water management.
Potential control of toxic cyanobacteria blooms with Moroccan seaweed extracts

Abstract:Marine macroalgae are a promising source of diverse bioactive compounds with applications in the biocontrol of harmful cyanobacteria blooms (cyanoHABs). In this work, we evaluated the potential algicidal activities of 14 species of seaweed collected from the coast of Souiria Laqdima, Morocco. Methanol extracts were screened in solid and liquid medium against the growth of the toxic cyanobacteria Microcystis aeruginosa and the microalgae Chlorella sp. used as food supplement. The results in solid medium revealed that the algicidal activity was limited to M. aeruginosa with the extract of Bornetia secundiflora showing the highest growth inhibition activity against Microcystis (27.33 ± 0.33 mm), whereas the extracts of Laminaria digitata, Halopytis incurvus, Ulva lactuca, and Sargasum muticum showed no inhibition. In liquid medium, the results indicated that all methanolic extracts of different macroalgae tested have a significant inhibitory effect on M. aeruginosa compared with that of the negative control. The maximum inhibition rates of M. aeruginosa were produced by the extracts of Bifurcaria tuberculata, Codium elongatum, and B. secundiflora. Moreover, the extracts of B. secundiflora recorded the maximum inhibition rate of Chlorella sp. Overall, the results highlight the potential of the extracts from macroalgae to control toxic cyanobacteria species.
