Abstract:Broken symmetries in topological condensed matter systems have implications for the spectrum of Fermionic excitations confined on surfaces or topological defects. The Fermionic spectrum of confined (quasi-2D) $^3$He-A consists of branches of chiral edge states. The negative energy states are related to the ground-state angular momentum, $L_z = (N/2) \hbar$, for $N/2$ Cooper pairs. The power law suppression of the angular momentum, $L_z(T) \simeq (N/2)\,\hbar\,[1 - \frac{2}{3}(\pi T/\Delta)^2 ]$ for $0 \le T \ll T_c$, in the fully gapped 2D chiral A-phase reflects the thermal excitation of the chiral edge Fermions. We discuss the effects of wave function overlap, and hybridization between edge states confined near opposing edge boundaries on the edge currents, ground-state angular momentum and ground-state order parameter of superfluid $^3$He thin films. Under strong lateral confinement, the chiral A phase undergoes a sequence of phase transitions, first to a pair density wave (PDW) phase with broken translational symmetry at $D_{c2} \sim 16 \xi_0$. The PDW phase is described by a periodic array of chiral domains with alternating chirality, separated by domain walls. The period of PDW phase diverges as the confinement length $D\rightarrow D_{c_2}$. The PDW phase breaks time-reversal symmetry, translation invariance, but is invariant under the combination of time-reversal and translation by a one-half period of the PDW. The mass current distribution of the PDW phase reflects this combined symmetry, and originates from the spectra of edge Fermions and the chiral branches bound to the domain walls. Under sufficiently strong confinement a second-order transition occurs to the non-chiral ``polar phase'' at $D_{c1} \sim 9\xi_0$, in which a single p-wave orbital state of Cooper pairs is aligned along the channel.

Broken translational and time-reversal symmetry in superconducting films

Abstract:We demonstrate that films of unconventional (d-wave) superconductor at temperatures $T\lesssim 0.43 T_c$ can exhibit unusual superconducting phases. The new ground states beside the broken gauge and the point group symmetries can spontaneously break (i) continuous translational symmetry and form periodic order parameter structures in the plane of the film, or (ii) time-reversal symmetry and develop supercurrent flowing along the film. These states are result of the strong transverse inhomogeniety present in films with thickness of several coherence lengths. We show a natural similarity between formation of these states and the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov state.

Abstract:The physical realization of Chern insulators is of fundamental and practical interest, as they are predicted to host the quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect and topologically protected chiral edge states which can carry dissipationless current. Current realizations of the QAH state often require complex heterostructures and sub-Kelvin temperatures, making the discovery of intrinsic, high temperature QAH systems of significant interest. In this work we show that time-reversal symmetry breaking Weyl semimetals, being essentially stacks of Chern insulators with inter-layer coupling, may provide a new platform for the higher temperature realization of robust chiral edge states. We present combined scanning tunneling spectroscopy and theoretical investigations of the magnetic Weyl semimetal, Co 3 Sn 2 S 2 . Using modeling and numerical simulations we find that depending on the strength of the interlayer coupling, chiral edge states can be localized on partially exposed kagome planes on the surfaces of a Weyl semimetal. Correspondingly, our d I /d V maps on the kagome Co 3 Sn terraces show topological states confined to the edges which display linear dispersion. This work provides a new paradigm for realizing chiral edge modes and provides a pathway for the realization of higher temperature QAH effect in magnetic Weyl systems in the two-dimensional limit.

Abstract:We investigate the longitudinal conductance of a disordered three-dimensional(3D) quantum Hall system within a tight-binding lattice model using numericalThouless conductance calculations. For the bulk, we confirm that the mobilityedges are independent of the propagating directions in this anisotropic system.As disorder increases, the conductance peak of the lowest subband in thehorizontal direction floats to the central subband as in the two-dimensional(2D) case, while there is no clear evidence of floating in the verticaldirection. We thus conclude that for extended states, the longitudinalconductance in the vertical direction behaves like a quasi-one-dimensional (1D)normal metal, while the longitudinal conductance in the horizontal direction iscontrolled by layered conducting states stacked coherently. Inside the quantumHall gap, we study the novel 2D chiral surface states at the sidewalls of thesample. We demonstrate the crossover of the surface states between the quasi-1Dmetal and insulator regimes, which can be achieved by modifying the interlayerhopping strength and the disorder strength in the model. The typical behaviorsof the Thouless conductance and the wave functions of the surface states inthese two regimes are investigated. Finally, in order to predict the regime ofthe surface states for arbitrary parameters, we determine an explicitrelationship between the localization length of surface states and themicroscopic parameters of the model.
Disorder Induced Anomalous Thermal Hall Effect in Chiral Phases of Superfluid $^3$He

Abstract:NMR experiments on liquid $^3$He infused into uniaxially anisotropic silica aerogels show the stabilisation of two equal-spin-pairing chiral phases on cooling from the normal phase. The alignment of the chiral axis relative to the anisotropy axis for these phases is predicted to depend upon temperature. A chiral A-like phase is also stabilized when $^3$He is confined to a slab of thickness $D\sim \xi$, the superfluid coherence length. For both types of confinement, scattering of quasiparticles by the random potential - aerogel or surface - is pair breaking and generates a sub-gap density of quasiparticle states. The random field also conspires with the chiral order parameter to generate skew scattering of quasiparticles in the plane normal to the chiral axis. This scattering mechanism leads to anomalous thermal Hall transport for nonequilibrium quasiparticles driven by a thermal gradient. We report theoretical results for the anomalous thermal Hall conductivity for theoretical models for chiral phases of $^3$He in both anisotropic aerogel and slabs. The anomalous thermal Hall effect (ATHE) provides an important tool to identify signatures of broken time-reversal and mirror symmetries and topology in chiral superconductors/superfluids.

Transport of A Sliding Wigner Crystal in the Four Flux Composite Fermion Regime

Abstract:In two-dimensional (2D) electron systems, Wigner crystals (WC) and fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) liquids are competing ground states under low temperatures (T) and high magnetic fields (B). Here we report differential conductivity results demonstrating the reentrant insulating phase around nu = 1/5 in a 2D hole system in AlGaAs/GaAs quantum wells and unexpected features in the solid-liquid phase transition between WC and FQHE liquids in ultrahigh magnetic fields up to 45 T. Remarkably, the electric field (E) plays an equivalent role as the temperature does in our phase diagram. From the E - T "duality" analysis, a characteristic length of 450 nm is derived, which can be understood as the phase-coherent domain size of WC. Moreover, evidence shows that with weak disorder the insulating phase and composite fermion liquid could be coexisting around nu= 1/5, pointing to the possibility that the insulating phase is the four flux quantum Wigner crystal, as proposed by theories.
Two-dimension to three-dimension transition of chiral spin liquid and fractional quantum Hall phases

Abstract:There have been lots of interest in two-dimensional (2D) fractional phases with an emergent U (1) gauge field. However, many experimental realizations are actually in three-dimensional (3D) systems with infinitely stacked 2D layers. Then a natural question arises: starting from the decoupling limit with 2+1d U (1) gauge field in each layer, how does the gauge field become 3+1d when increasing inter-layer coupling? Here we propose a 2D to 3D transition through condensing inter-layer exciton. The Goldstone mode of the condensation becomes the missing az component in the 3D phase. As a simple example, we construct a 3D chiral spin liquid (CSL) from infinitely stacked 2D CSL. The 3D CSL has a gapless photon mode with dispersion $\omega \sim q_z^2$ in the z-direction. The same theory also applies to the fractional quantum Hall phase. At the 2D to the 3D transition point, there are gapless modes at each $q_z$ along a line $q = (0,0,q_z)$ in momentum space, in contrast to a conventional critical point with gapless mode only at one momentum. Meanwhile, the scaling dimension $\Delta (q_z)$ has $q_z$ dependence, indicating a more non-trivial structure than a simple decoupled fixed point. Our theory can also be generalized to a critical point between a generic infinite component Chern-Simons-Maxwell theory (iCSM) with both intra-layer and inter-layer Chern Simons term and a 3D gapless phase. Certain iCSM theories have recently been shown to describe gapped non-foliated fracton orders. Therefore we have a continuous transition between a gapped fracton order and a 3D gapless phase.

Intertwined Weyl phases emergent from higher-order topology and unconventional Weyl fermions via crystalline symmetry

Abstract:We discover three-dimensional intertwined Weyl phases, by developing a theory to create topological phases. The theory is based on intertwining existing topological gapped and gapless phases protected by the same crystalline symmetry. The intertwined Weyl phases feature both unconventional Weyl semimetallic (monopole charge>1) and higher-order topological phases, and more importantly, their exotic intertwining. While the two phases are independently stabilized by the same symmetry, their intertwining results in the specific distribution of them in the bulk. The construction mechanism allows us to combine different kinds of unconventional Weyl semimetallic and higher-order topological phases to generate distinct phases. Remarkably, on 2D surfaces, the intertwining causes the Fermi-arc topology to change in a periodic pattern against surface orientation. This feature provides a characteristic and feasible signature to probe the intertwining Weyl phases. Moreover, we provide guidelines for searching candidate materials, and elaborate on emulating the intertwined double-Weyl phase in cold-atom experiments.

Gauge Invariance and Anomalies in Condensed Matter Physics

Abstract:This paper begins with a summary of a powerful formalism for the study of electronic states in condensed matter physics called "Gauge Theory of States/Phases of Matter." The chiral anomaly, which plays quite a prominent role in that formalism, is recalled. I then sketch an application of the chiral anomaly in 1+1 dimensions to quantum wires. Subsequently, some elements of the quantum Hall effect in two-dimensional (2D) gapped ("incompressible") electron liquids are reviewed. In particular, I discuss the role of anomalous chiral edge currents and of anomaly inflow in 2D gapped electron liquids with explicitly or spontaneously broken time reversal, i.e., in Hall- and Chern insulators. The topological Chern-Simons action yielding the transport equations valid in the bulk of such systems and the associated anomalous edge action are derived. The results of a general classification of "abelian" Hall insulators are outlined. After some remarks on induced Chern-Simons actions, I sketch results on certain 2D chiral photonic wave guides. I then continue with an analysis of chiral edge spin-currents and the bulk response equations in time-reversal invariant 2D topological insulators of electron gases with spin-orbit interactions. The "chiral magnetic effect" in 3D systems and axion-electrodynamics are reviewed next. This prepares the ground for an outline of a general theory of 3D topological insulators, including "axionic insulators". Some remarks on Weyl semi-metals, which exhibit the chiral magnetic effect, and on Mott transitions in 3D systems with dynamical axion-like degrees of freedom conclude this review.}

Excitonic topological order in imbalanced electron–hole bilayers

Abstract:Correlation and frustration play essential roles in physics, giving rise to novel quantum phases 1,2,3,4,5,6 . A typical frustrated system is correlated bosons on moat bands, which could host topological orders with long-range quantum entanglement 4 . However, the realization of moat-band physics is still challenging. Here, we explore moat-band phenomena in shallowly inverted InAs/GaSb quantum wells, where we observe an unconventional time-reversal-symmetry breaking excitonic ground state under imbalanced electron and hole densities. We find that a large bulk gap exists, encompassing a broad range of density imbalances at zero magnetic field ( B ), accompanied by edge channels that resemble helical transport. Under an increasing perpendicular B , the bulk gap persists, and an anomalous plateau of Hall signals appears, which demonstrates an evolution from helical-like to chiral-like edge transport with a Hall conductance approximately equal to e 2 / h at 35 tesla, where e is the elementary charge and h is Planck's constant. Theoretically, we show that strong frustration from density imbalance leads to a moat band for excitons, resulting in a time-reversal-symmetry breaking excitonic topological order, which explains all our experimental observations. Our work opens up a new direction for research on topological and correlated bosonic systems in solid states beyond the framework of symmetry-protected topological phases, including but not limited to the bosonic fractional quantum Hall effect.

Chiral superfluidity of helium-3 in the quasi-two-dimensional limit

Abstract:Anisotropic pair breaking close to surfaces favors chiral superfluid $^3$He-A over time-reversal invariant $^3$He-B. Confining superfluid $^3$He into a cavity of height $D$ of the order of the Cooper pair size characterized by the coherence length $\xi_0$ -- ranging between 16 nm (34 bar) and 77 nm (0 bar) -- extends the surface effects over the whole sample volume, thus allowing stabilization of the A phase at pressures $P$ and temperatures $T$ where otherwise the B phase would be stable. In this work the surfaces of such a confined sample are covered with a superfluid $^4$He film to create specular quasiparticle scattering boundary conditions, preventing the suppression of the superfluid order parameter. We show that the chiral A phase is the stable superfluid phase under strong confinement over the full $P-T$ phase diagram down to a quasi-two-dimensional limit $D/\xi_0 = 1$. The planar phase, which is degenerate with the chiral A phase in the weak-coupling limit, is not observed. The gap inferred from measurements over the wide pressure range from 0.2 to 21.0 bar leads to an empirical ansatz for temperature-dependent strong-coupling effects. We discuss how these results pave the way for the realization of the fully-gapped two-dimensional $p_x + ip_y$ superfluid under more extreme confinement.

Disorder-induced phase transitions in double Weyl semimetals

Abstract:The double Weyl semimetal (DWSM) is a newly proposed topological material that hosts Weyl points with chiral charge n = 2. The disorder effect in DWSM is investigated by adopting the tight-binding Hamilto-nian. Using the transfer matrix method and the noncommutative Kubo formula, we numerically calculate the localization length and the Hall conductivity in the presence of the on-site nonmagnetic disorder or orbital (spin-flip) disorders, and give the corresponding global phase diagrams. For the on-site nonmagnetic disorder, the system undergoes the DWSM-3D quantum anomalous Hall (3D QAH) and normal insulator (NI)-DWSM phase transitions, and evolves into the diffusive metal phase before entering the gapless Anderson insulator phase, which is consistent with the Weyl semimetal. For ax orbital disorder, increasing disorder strength can generate a pair of Weyl nodes at the boundary of the Brillouin zone and induce a 3D QAH-DWSM phase transition. Surprisingly, DOS calculations manifest that the insulator phase induced by the ax disorder is gapped, which is different from the gapless DOS in the system with a0 disorders. Another difference is the direct DWSM-NI transition. These results indicate that the a0 and ax disorders have a diverse impact on the system. Then we investigate the interplay of orbital disorders for both disordered 3D QAH phase and DWSM phase. The disorder-induced transitions at low disorders can be well understood in terms of the self-consistent Born approximation.
Kibble-Zurek Dynamics & Statistics of Topological Defects in Chiral Superfluid $^3$He Films

Abstract:In equilibrium, confined films of superfluid $^3$He-A have the chiral axis, $\hat{\ell}$, locked normal to the surface of the film. There are two degenerate ground states $\hat{\ell}\;||\pm\hat{z}$. However, for a temperature quench, i.e. cool down through the phase transition at a finite rate, causally disconnected regions of order parameter fluctuations develop and evolve into an inhomogeneous ordered phase that hosts both domain walls between time-reversed chiral phases as well as vortices with winding numbers $p\in\mathbb{Z}$. We present simulations based on a time-dependent generalization of Ginzburg-Landau theory for strong-coupling $^3$He that reveal both types of topological defects to be present following the temperature quench. Results for the dynamics of vortices interacting with anti-vortices as well as domain walls are presented. The vortex number density as a function of quench rate agrees well with the scaling predicted by Kibble and Zurek. We also present results for the number distribution and compare with other theoretical models for full counting statistics of the topological defect density. Finally, we present results for an asymmetry in the post-freeze-out populations of inequivalent vortex core structures that are characteristic of a chiral superfluid.

Heesch Weyl Fermions in inadmissible chiral antiferromagnets

Abstract:Symmetry is a crucial factor in determining the topological properties of materials. In nonmagnetic chiral crystals, the existence of the Kramers Weyl fermions reveals the topological nature of the Kramers degeneracy at time-reversal-invariant momenta (TRIMs). However, it is not clear whether Weyl nodes can also be pinned at points of symmetry in magnetic materials where the time-reversal is spontaneously broken. In this study, we introduce a new type of Weyl fermions, called Heesch Weyl fermions (HWFs), which are stabilized and pinned at points of symmetry by the Heesch groups in inadmissible chiral antiferromagnets. The emergence of HWFs is fundamentally different from that of Kramers Weyl fermions, as it does not rely on any anti-unitary symmetry $\mathcal{A}$ that satisfies $\mathcal{A}^2=-1$. Importantly, the emergence of HWFs is closely related to the antiferromagnetic order, as they are generally obscured by nodal lines in the parent nonmagnetic state. Using group theory analysis, we classify all the magnetic little co-groups of momenta where Heesch Weyl nodes are enforced and pinned by symmetry. With the guidance of this classification and first-principles calculations, we identify antiferromagnetic (AFM) materials such as YMnO$_3$ and Mn$_3$IrGe as candidate hosts for the AFM-order-induced HWFs.We also explore novel properties of Heesch Weyl antiferromagnets, such as nonlinear anomalous Hall effects and axial movement of Heesch Weyl nodes. Our findings shed new light on the role of symmetry in determining and stabilizing topological properties in magnetic materials, and open up new avenues for the design and exploration of topological materials.

Abstract:Gapless topological boundary states characterize nontrivial topological phases arising from the bulk-boundary correspondence in symmetry-protected topological materials, such as the emergence of helical edge states in a two-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}_2$ topological insulator. However, the incorporation of symmetry-breaking perturbation terms in the Hamiltonian leads to the gapping of these edge bands, resulting in missing these crucial topological boundary states. In this work, we systematically investigate the robustness of bulk-boundary correspondence in the quantum spin Hall insulator via recently introduced feature spectrum topology. Our findings present a comprehensive understanding of feature-energy duality, illustrating that the aggregate number of gapless edge states in the energy-momentum ($\it{E-k}$) map and the non-trivial edge states in the $\hat{S}_z$ feature spectrum equals the spin Chern number of multilayer quantum spin Hall insulator. We identify a van der Waals material bismuth bromide $\rm(Bi_4Br_4)$ as a promising candidate through first-principles calculations. Our work not only unravels the intricacies of bulk-boundary correspondence but also charts a course for exploring quantum spin Hall insulators with high spin-Chern number.

Breakdown of helical edge state topologically protected conductance in time-reversal-breaking excitonic insulators

Abstract:Gapless helical edge modes are a hallmark of the quantum spin Hall effect. Protected by time-reversal symmetry, each edge contributes a quantized zero-temperature conductance quantum $G_0 \equiv e^2/h$. However, the experimentally observed conductance in WTe$_2$ decreases below $G_0$ per edge already at edge lengths around 100 nm, even in the absence of explicit time-reversal breaking due to an external field or magnetic impurities. In this work, we show how a time-reversal breaking excitonic condensate with a spin-spiral order that can form in WTe$_2$ leads to the breakdown of conductance quantization. We perform Hartree-Fock calculations to compare time-reversal breaking and preserving excitonic insulators. Using these mean-field models we demonstrate via quantum transport simulations that weak non-magnetic disorder reproduces the edge length scaling of resistance observed in the experiments. We complement this by analysis in the Luttinger liquid picture, shedding additional light on the mechanism behind the quantization breakdown.

Triangular pair density wave in confined superfluid $^3$He

Abstract:Recent advances in experiment and theory suggest that superfluid $^3$He under planar confinement may form a pair density wave (PDW) whereby superfluid and crystalline orders coexist. While a natural candidate for this phase is a unidirectional stripe phase predicted by Vorontsov and Sauls in 2007, recent nuclear magnetic resonance measurements of the superfluid order parameter rather suggest a two-dimensional PDW with noncollinear wavevectors, of possibly square or hexagonal symmetry. In this Letter, we present a general mechanism by which a PDW with the symmetry of a triangular lattice can be stabilized, based on a superfluid generalization of Landau's theory of the liquid-solid transition. A soft-mode instability at finite wavevector within the translationally invariant planar-distorted B phase triggers a transition from uniform superfluid to PDW that is first order due to a cubic term generally present in the PDW free-energy functional. This cubic term also lifts the degeneracy of possible PDW states in favor of those for which wavevectors add to zero in triangles, which in two dimensions uniquely selects the triangular lattice.

Abstract:A (2+1)D topological ordered phase with U(1) symmetry may or may not have a symmetric gapped edge state, even if both thermal and electric Hall conductivity are vanishing. It is recently discovered that there are "higher" versions of Hall conductivity valid for fermionic fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states, which obstructs symmetry-preserving gapped edge state beyond thermal and electric Hall conductivity. In this paper, we show that one can extract higher Hall conductivity from a single wave function of an FQH state, by evaluating the expectation value of the "partial rotation" unitary which is a combination of partial spatial rotation and a U(1) phase rotation. This result is verified numerically with the fermionic Laughlin state with $\nu=1/3$, $1/5$, as well as the non-Abelian Moore-Read state. Together with topological entanglement entropy, we prove that the expectation values of the partial rotation completely determines if a bosonic/fermionic Abelian topological order with U(1) symmetry has a symmetry-preserving gappable edge state or not. We also show that thermal and electric Hall conductivity of Abelian topological order can be extracted by partial rotations. Even in non-Abelian FQH states, partial rotation provides the Lieb-Schultz-Mattis type theorem constraining the low-energy spectrum of the bulk-boundary system. The generalization of higher Hall conductivity to the case with Lie group symmetry is also presented.

Abstract:We study the low-energy properties of the one-dimensional spin-1/2 XXZ chain with time-reversal symmetry-breaking pseudo-scalar chiral interaction and propose a phase diagram for the model. In the integrable case of the isotropic Heisenberg model with the chiral interaction, we employ the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz to find "chiralization", the response of the ground state versus the strength of the pseudo-scalar chiral interaction of a chiral Heisenberg chain. Unlike the magnetization case, the chirality of the ground state remains zero until the transition point corresponding to critical coupling α c = 2 J/π with J being the antiferromagnetic spin-exchange interaction. The central-charge c = 1 conformal field theories (CFTs) describe the two phases with zero and finite chirality. We show for this particular case and conjecture more generally for similar phase transitions that the difference between two emergent CFTs with identical central charges lies in the symmetry of their ground state (lightest weight) primary fields, i.e., the two phases are symmetry-enriched CFTs. At finite but small temperatures, the non-chiral Heisenberg phase acquires a finite chirality that scales with the temperature quadratically. We show that the finite-size effect around the transition point probes the transition.

Abstract:Extensive research interest has been attracted by the fact that recent experiments in cold atoms simulate the chiral edge states of (1 + 1)-dimensional quantum Hall systems with laser-assisted transitions between different atomic nuclear spin states in a one-dimensional optical lattice. Within such an optical lattice, we study the phase diagrams of nu = 1/3 filling hardcore fermions and nu = 1/2 hard-core bosons with internal spin states in the presence of dipoledipolar interactions. Our results show that the interaction drives the fermionic (bosonic) systems from the normal (superfluid) phase into the fractional topological phase with possible crystalline orderings. The topological nature of the latter phase is identified by the numerical evaluation of the many-body Chern number. Remarkably, we find that a considerable spectrum gap stabilizes the fractional topological phase with a moderate interaction strength, while, for the normal/superfluid phase, the Thouless charge pumping fluctuates strongly for small spin systems but approaches its universal value 1/3 for fermionic and 1/2 for bosonic systems with large spins.
