Abstract:Foot-and-mouth Disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral disease affecting all hoof-cloven animals. Serotypes A, O and SAT 2 of the foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) are circulating in Egypt. The present study aimed to identify and molecularly characterize the FMDV strains circulating in Northern Egypt during an epidemic that struck the nation in 2022. RNA was extracted from the epithelial specimens, vesicular fluid from affected cattle. The samples were screened using real-time reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) targeting the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) gene. Positive samples underwent individual serotype-specific amplification using primers designed for VP1 of O, A, and SAT 2 serotypes. Subsequently, direct sequencing was performed on the positive samples. The real-time RT-PCR detected positive samples from epithelial and vesicular fluid samples, but not in the blood of infected animals. Out of the 16 samples, seven tested positive for FMDV serotype A. Of these seven positive samples, six were categorized as serotype A-African topotype-G-IV, and these positive samples were isolated in BHK-21 cells, yielding an overt cytopathic effect caused by the virus. In conclusion, it is necessary to sustain continuous surveillance of the evolution of circulating FMDV strains to facilitate the assessment and aid in the selection of vaccine strains for the effective control of FMDV in Egypt.

Abstract:Foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) remains a major threat to livestock in Egypt, with ongoing outbreaks involving serotypes A, O, and SAT2. This study aimed to improve the understanding of these circulating FMDV strains to improve control measures. Between 2022 and 2023, 134 cattle samples from across Egypt were analyzed, revealing a 67.9% positivity rate for Pan FMDV. Of these positive samples, 64 were identified as serotype A and 27 as serotype O. Genetic analysis indicated that serotype O strains clustered within the EA-3 topotype, suggesting endemic persistence and potential vaccine evasion, while serotype A strains were associated with the African topotype and linked to regions such as Ethiopia, Kenya, and Sudan. Notable amino acid mutations in the VP1 protein of both serotypes highlighted potential challenges to vaccine effectiveness. These findings underscore the need for enhanced surveillance, timely vaccine updates, and regional cooperation to effectively manage FMD outbreaks in Egypt and neighboring countries.

Molecular detection and phylogenetic analysis of newly emerging foot-and-mouth disease virus type A, Lineage EURO-SA in Egypt in 2022

Abstract:A newly emerging and exotic foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) caused a recent outbreak of serotype A in Egypt in 2022, which affected cattle and water buffalo. Previous phylogenetic studies on FMDV circulating in Egypt have mainly focused on genomic regions encoding the structural proteins which determine FMDV serotype. No study has yet determined structural proteins sequences of the newly emerging Europe-South America (EURO-SA) lineage which was recently isolated from Egypt during a routine surveillance in 2022. The objective of the current study was to analyze the structural proteins of the Venezuelan type which belongs to EURO-SA. The new isolate was related to serotype A lineage Euro-South America. Phylogentic analyses have reveled that the newly isolated lineage samples were closely related to reported sequences that have been identified in Venzuela and Colombia. Analysis of structural protein sequences revealed the recent isolates belong to prototype strain A24 Cruzeiro. Notably, nucleotide sequences of the Egyptian isolate was related to Venezuelan, Brazilian, and Colombian strains with identity not exceeding 90%. The divergence which appears in the genetic identity of the Egyptian A/EURO-SA lineage from other related strains may be attributed to the absence of Euro-SA lineage sequence from Egypt. The present study is the first report on the detection of EURO-SA lineage in Egypt. The recent detection of the EURO-SA lineage samples may be explained due to imported animals from Colombia or Brazil which share geographical borders with Venezuela. The findings of the present study highlight the significance of continuous monitoring of FMDV in Egypt for newly emerging FMDVs.
Effect of schisandrin B on hepatic glutathione antioxidant system in mice: protection against carbon tetrachloride toxicity.

Abstract:Pretreating female Balb/c mice with schisandrin B (Sch B) at increasing daily doses (1-4 mmol/kg) for 3 days caused dose-dependent increases in hepatic glutathione S-transferase (GST) and glutathione reductase (GRD) activities. However, the activities of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), Se-glutathione peroxidase (GPX), and gamma-glutamylcysteine synthetase (GCS) were down-regulated to varying degrees in a dose-dependent manner. While there were biphasic changes in hepatic reduced glutathione (GSH) level as well as susceptibility of hepatic tissue homogenates to in vitro peroxide-induced GSH depletion, a gradual decrease in hepatic malondialdehyde content was observed. The beneficial effect of Sch B on the hepatic GSH anti-oxidant system became more evident after CCl4 challenge. The same Sch B pretreatment regimen caused a dose-dependent protection against carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)-induced hepatotoxicity. The hepatoprotection was associated with significant enhancement in hepatic GSH status, as indicated by the substantial increase in tissue GSH levels and the corresponding decrease in susceptibility of tissue homogenates to GSH depletion. Where the activities of GST and GRD were increased linearly over non-CCl4 control values, there was also a gradual elevation in G6PDH activity upon administration of increasing doses of Sch B. In contrast, GPX activity was moderately down-regulated. The ensemble of results suggests that the hepatoprotection afforded by Sch B pretreatment may mainly be attributed to the enhancement in the functioning of the hepatic GSH anti-oxidant system, possibly through stimulating the activities of GSH related enzymes.
Molecular Characterization of Newly Emerging Foot-and-Mouth Disease Virus Serotype SAT 2 of Lib-12 Lineage Isolated from Egypt

Abstract:An outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) serotype SAT 2 occurred in Egypt in 2018, which affected cattle and water buffalo. Previous phylogenetic studies on FMDV circulating in Egypt have mainly focused on genomic regions encoding structural proteins which determine FMDV serotype. So far, none of these studies have analyzed the open reading frame (ORF) sequence of Egyptian SAT 2/Lib-12 lineage. The present study aimed to analyze and identify the ORF genome sequence of Lib-12 lineage which belongs to FMDV serotype SAT 2 topotype VII in Egypt. The protocol workflow was optimized and tested using a representative field isolate of FMDV/SAT 2/Lib-12 from a bovine tongue sample collected in 2018 from Ismailia governorate (SAT2/EGY/Ismailia/2018). The protocol was based on reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction with multiple overlapping primers, amplicons sequencing, and assembly to complete the ORF consensus sequence. Alignments of the sequence fragments formed consensus genome sequence of 7219 nucleotides in length. The complete nucleotide sequence of the Egyptian isolate was related to Ethiopian, Nigerian, and Ghanaian strains, with identity not exceeding 95%. The divergence in the genetic identity of the Egyptian SAT 2/Lib-12 lineage from other Egyptian strains and Libyan isolates was 7%, and this may be attributed to the absence of the Lib-12 lineage ORF sequence from Egypt and Libya in the database. The present study significantly advances knowledge of the molecular analysis of FMDV SAT 2 and the design of vaccine selection for FMDV SAT 2 in Egypt. The study protocol could be applied to other FMDV serotypes.
Detection of foot-and-mouth disease virus in raw milk in Menofia Governorate and its effect on reproductive hormones and physiochemical properties of milk

Abstract:Background and Aim: Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is an extremely contagious viral disease that affects domestic and wild cloven-hoofed animals. In Egypt, FMD has been enzootic since the 1950s and caused great economic losses in cattle and buffalos over the past few years. This study aimed to detect FMD virus (FMDV) in serum and raw milk samples collected from infected and adjacent cattle and buffalos from different localities in El Menofia Governorate, Egypt. Materials and Methods: Blood and milk samples were collected from apparently diseased and adjacent 100 cows and 100 buffalos. Serum samples were prepared and used for the detection of FMDV using a non-structural protein enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, while real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) was used for the detection of FMDV in milk samples. Reproductive hormones were estimated using radioimmunoassay kits. Milk constituents were determined by Lactoscan. Results: Of the 200 examined serum samples (100 cows and 100 buffalos), 56% and 44% were seropositive for FMDV non-structural protein antibodies in cattle and buffalo, respectively. Real-time reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction results confirmed that all examined milk samples collected from seropositive animals were positive for FMDV. Estrogen and progesterone levels in the serum of seropositive and seronegative animals were measured, and FMDV was proven to significantly elevate estrogen and reduce progesterone levels in both non-pregnant and pregnant animals during different stages of pregnancy. The effect of the virus on milk composition and somatic cell count (SCC) was also studied, revealing that FMDV infection significantly decreased the level of milk fat, protein, and lactose but did not significantly affected minerals, pH, and conductivity. Moreover, it significantly increased the SCC. Conclusion: Data recorded in this study indicates a widespread occurrence of FMDV in cattle and buffalo all over Menofia Governorate, Egypt. Infected raw milk is of poor quality and, if put for commercial sale, may have health risks for consumers and play a significant role in spreading the virus. Moreover, FMDV may disturb some reproductive hormones, which could adversely affect cattle and buffalo productivity. Therefore, preventive programs and accurate diagnosis are essential for successful disease control.
Comparative nucleotide sequencing of the VP1 capsid gene of recent isolates of foot-and-mouth disease virus serotype O from Egypt

Abstract:Since 2006, Egypt has been affected by eleven various foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) lineages. Accordingly, the nucleotide sequences of the 1D gene and the genes encoding the external capsid protein of some isolates of serotype O (the most predominant epidemic serotype in the country) collected from 2004 to 2017 were determined. All of these viruses (including the vaccine strain) belonged to serotype O, topotype ME-SA, and lineage Sharquia-72, and their sequences were of 98.6-98.9% identical to that of strain O1/Sharquia/EGY/72 (DQ164871), and differed from cultured and clinical (D197E) virus strains. The characteristic sites on the surface of the structural proteins of the Egyptian serotype O, topotype ME-SA viruses were located at residues 138 and 198 of VP1, residue 132 of VP2, and residues 56 and 104 of VP3. Furthermore, a phylogenetic tree revealed that Sharquia-72 was the only lineage present in Egypt for many decades prior to 2007. Unfortunately, however, during the last decade, five lineages of two separate topotypes of FMDV serotype O were detected in Egypt. Lineages Sharquia-72 and PanAsia-2 belong to topotype ME-SA and show ~ 14.5 to 17.5% intra-lineage divergence. In addition, lineages Qal-13, Ism-16, and Alx-17 cluster within topotype EA-3 and show ~ 4.5 to 15% intra-lineage diversity. The predecessors of the Egyptian EA-3 viruses are likely to have been from Sudan. Finally, at least a penta- or hexavalent vaccine comprising strains representing the endemic FMDV topotypes should be implemented on a wide scale in Egypt, which could combat the incursion of new lineages.

Abstract:One of the major factors hindering efficient livestock production is the presence of high-impact infectious animal diseases, such as foot and mouth disease (FMD), lumpy skin disease (LSD), and bovine ephemeral fever (BEF), which are notable viral infections affecting cattle in Egypt, leading to significant economic losses. FMD is caused by the foot and mouth disease virus (FMDV) of the genus Aphthovirus in the Picornaviridae family. LSD is caused by lumpy skin disease virus (LSDV) of Capripox genus within the Poxviridae family, subfamily Chordopoxvirinae. BEF is caused by bovine ephemeral fever virus (BEFV) of genus Ephemerovirus in the Rhabdoviridae family. FMD is a highly contagious viral infection of domestic and wild cloven-hooved animals and can spread through the wind. On the other hand, LSD and BEF are arthropod-borne viral diseases that mainly affect domestic cattle and water buffalo. Despite government vaccination efforts, these three viral diseases have become widespread in Egypt, with several reported epidemics. Egypt's importation of large numbers of animals from different countries, combined with unregulated animal movements through trading and borders between African countries and Egypt, facilitates the introduction of new FMDV serotypes and lineages not covered by the current vaccination plans. To establish an effective control program, countries need to assess the real epizootic situation of various infectious animal diseases to develop an efficient early warning system. This review provides information about FMD, LSD, and BEF, including their economic impacts, causative viruses, global burden, the situation in Egypt, and the challenges in controlling these diseases.

Abstract:Foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) is an endemic disease in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in both wild and domestic animals. Despite this, no systematic FMD outbreak investigation accompanied by molecular characterisation of FMD viruses (FMDVs) in small ruminants or cattle has been performed, and only a single report that describes sequences for FMDVs in wildlife from the Emirate has been published. In this study, FMD outbreaks that occurred in 2021 in five animal farms and one animal market in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi were investigated. Cases involved sheep, goats, and cattle, as well as Arabian oryx (Oryx leucoryx). Twelve samples were positive for FMDV via RT-qPCR, and four samples (Arabian oryx n = 1, goat n = 2, and sheep n = 1) were successfully genotyped using VP1 nucleotide sequencing. These sequences shared 88~98% identity and were classified within the serotype O, Middle East-South Asia topotype (O/ME-SA). Phylogenetic analysis revealed that the Arabian oryx isolate (UAE/2/2021) belonged to the PanAsia-2 lineage, the ANT-10 sublineage, and was closely related to the FMDVs recently detected in neighbouring countries. The FMDV isolates from goats (UAE/10/2021 and UAE/11/2021) and from sheep (UAE/14/2021) formed a monophyletic cluster within the SA-2018 lineage that contained viruses from Bangladesh, India, and Sri Lanka. This is the first study describing the circulation of the FMDV O/ME-SA/SA-2018 sublineage in the UAE. These data shed light on the epidemiology of FMD in the UAE and motivate further systematic epidemiological studies and genomic sequencing to enhance the ongoing national animal health FMD control plan.

Abstract:PURPOSE This report describes the uncommon psychopathological state best known as folie à deux, or shared psychotic disorder, in a unique case in which the grandiose, religious delusions of a woman with uterine cancer are shared with her husband. OVERVIEW More than 50% of patients with cancer meet the criteria for diagnosis of major psychiatric disorders. Certainly, these disorders may occur as a result of the stress of the cancer diagnosis and treatment, but also because of a predisposition to psychiatric illness or a pre-existing psychiatric illness. In the medical setting, the phenomenon of folie à deux poses significant problems not only for the patient, but also for the involved family member, psychiatric consultant, and healthcare team. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS In this case, the patient's delusional system had a grave impact on her ability to make rational healthcare decisions, for which she was deemed incompetent. The first choice for her healthcare surrogate, her husband, was so affected by his sharing of her psychotic condition that he could not fulfill this role. In assessing a suspected case of folie à deux, awareness of several issues--the point at which religious over-ideation becomes delusional, the spectrum of competency, informed consent, and treatment refusal--is important.
Isolation and Molecular Characterization of Newcastle Disease Virus Genotype VII Circulating in Egypt (2017-2020)

Abstract:Despite the frequent use of ND vaccines in Egypt, Newcastle Disease Virus still causes outbreaks in the commercial, backyard, and wild captive poultry. Avian Orthoavula virus 1 (AOaV-1) belongs to the genus Orthoavulavirus and causes ND in a variety of avian species around the world. To explore the evolution of the NDV and evaluate the efficacy of the vaccine regimens currently being used in Egypt's commercial poultry, spleen, brain, ileocecal tonsil, and tracheal tissue specimens were collected from twenty-three vaccinated broiler flocks from four Egyptian governorates (Kafr-Elsheikh, Alexandria, Matrouh, and El-Behera) between 2017 and 2020 for molecular analysis. qRT-PCR was used to characterize the NDV that was propagated in specific pathogen-free embryonated chicken eggs (SPF ECEs). The isolates were screened for other endemic avian respiratory viruses including avian influenza and infectious bronchitis viruses. Five isolates were selected for further genetic characterization, based on the motif of the cleavage site (112RRQKR ↓F117) in the fusion (F) protein. All five isolates were identified as velogenic NDV strains based on partial-length F gene sequences. These isolates are clustered into subgenotype VII.1.1 of the class II of ND viruses, which is the main genotype in the Egyptian poultry industry and in those of many Middle East countries.

Abstract:In the present study, four very virulent infectious bursal disease virus (vvIBDV) isolates from flocks of chickens with vaccination failure in Egypt in 2003, 2007, 2010 and 2014 were characterized. The four viruses, designated USC2003, USC2007, USC2010 and USC2014, were detected by reverse transcription PCR, subjected to sequencing of both genomic segments (A and B) and compared with geographically and phylogenetically diverse IBDV strains. Phylogenetic analysis of segment A (complete) and B (partial) revealed a close relationship between Egyptian and vvIBDV reference strains of European and Asian origin. The sequences of segments of A and B the current Egyptian isolates were 96.1-98.2% and 96.5-98.7% identical, respectively, to those of other known vvIBDV isolates. The deduced amino acid sequences of VP1, polyprotein (pVP2-VP4-VP3) and VP5 revealed the presence of putative virulence determinants of Egyptian isolates compared with vvIBDV and less virulent (classical and variant) strains. The Egyptian isolates also possess unique amino acids substitutions within the hypervariable region of VP2 that differ from those of other reference IBDV strains. Further studies may be necessary to determine the pathogenic significance of these amino acid substitutions to fully understand the molecular epidemiology and evolution of IBDV.

[Quantitative analysis of sparfloxacin injection by high performance liquid chromatography].

Abstract:Analytical method of the quantitative determination of sparfloxacin injection by HPLC is described. The analytical conditions were as follows. A Waters Symmetry C18(5 microns, 150 mm x 3.9 mm i.d.) column was used as the analytical column. The detection wavelength was UV-298.8 nm. The column temperature was 30 degrees C. The mobile phase was 0.2% KH2PO4 buffer (pH 3.2)-CH3CN-CH3OH (80:15:5, volume ratio) and the flow-rate was 1.0 mL/min. The injection volume was 10 microL. The linear range (the peak area vs. the mass concentration of sparfloxacin) was from 39.94 mg/L to 199.68 mg/L, and the correlation coefficient was 0.9999. The average recovery of sparfloxacin was 100.1% (n = 5), and its RSD was 0.72%. The RSDs of continuous injections, within day injections per 2 hours and between day injections in three days were 0.19%, 0.14% and 0.13% respectively. The above analytical results show that this method has good precision and stability. It is a rapid, sensitive and accurate method for the analysis of sparfloxacin.
Prevalence and Molecular Characterization of Mycoplasma Species, Pasteurella multocida, and Staphylococcus aureus Isolated from Calves with Respiratory Manifestations

Abstract:Bovine respiratory disease (BRD) is a complex syndrome associated with high mortality in young calves and causes severe economic losses in the cattle industry worldwide. The current study investigated the prevalence and molecular characterization of common bacterial pathogens associated with respiratory symptoms in young calves from Sadat City, one of the largest industrial cities in Menoufiya Governorate, Egypt. In between December 2020 and March 2021, 200 mixed-breed young calves of 6–12 months were examined clinically. Of them, sixty (30%) calves showed signs of respiratory manifestations, such as coughing, serous to mucopurulent nasal discharges, fever, and abnormal lung sound. Deep nasal (Nasopharyngeal) swabs were collected from the affected calves for bacteriological investigation. Phenotypic characterization and identification revealed Mycoplasma bovis, Mycoplasma bovigenitalium, Pasteurella multocida, and Staphylococcus aureus in 8.33%, 5%, 5%, and 5% of the tested samples, respectively. The PCR technique using species-specific primer sets successfully amplified the target bacterial DNA in all culture-positive samples, confirming the identity of the isolated bacterial species. Partial gene sequencing of 16S rRNA gene of M. bovigenitalium, P. multocida, and S. aureus, and mb-mp 81 gene of M. bovis revealed high nucleotide similarity and genetic relationship with respective bacterial species reported from Egypt and around the world, suggesting transmission of these bacterial species between animal host species and localities. Our study highlights the four important bacterial strains associated with respiratory disorders in calves and suggests the possible spread of these bacterial pathogens across animal species and different geographic locations. Further studies using WGS and a large number of isolates are required to investigate the realistic lineage of Egyptian isolates and globally.

Abstract:The method of thin film preparation known as layer-by-layer assembly is of growing interest for current and envisioned developments in bionanotechnology. Here, cysteine-containing 32mer peptides have been designed, synthesized, purified, and used to prepare polypeptide films. A range of methods-quartz crystal microbalance, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, circular dichroism spectroscopy, and high-performance liquid chromatography-have been used to probe the effect of ionic strength and polymer secondary structure in solution on peptide self-assembly, and on secondary structure formation and disulfide bond cross-linking in the multilayer film. The amount of designed peptide deposited per adsorption step of film fabrication increased with increasing ionic strength, as with conventional polyelectrolytes. Secondary structure content changed from random coil to beta sheet on incorporation of peptides into a film. "Peptide-inherent" cross-linking by disulfide bond formation increased film stability at acidic pH. Conditions for disulfide stabilization have been optimized. The results contribute to exploration of the physical basis of peptide self-assembly broaden the scope of applications of layer-by-layer assembly, particularly where biocompatibility and stability are key design concerns, and provide a basis for mass production of custom polypeptide thin films of high stability, even in harsh environments.

Abstract:The method reported here for determining pyrazinamide and its metabolites (2-pyrazinoic acid, 5-hydroxypyrazinamide, 5-hydroxypyrazinoic acid and pyrazinuric acid) consists of diluting urine or acid deproteinisation of serum followed by chromatography on a cation-exchange column. The column length and the detection system (ultraviolet or fluorimetry) allow for a very good separation of the different compounds; the sensitivity of the method makes it suitable for pharmacokinetic studies.

Comparative Immunology Microbiology and Infectious Diseases

Abstract:This study aimed to investigate the concurrent infection of Pasteurella multocida ( P. multocida ) type B:2, which causes Hemorrhagic Septicemia (HS), with cases of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreaks in cattle in Bangladesh between March and December 2023. Samples were collected from 11 distinct outbreak areas, totaling 102 samples. These included 54 FMD samples (saliva, tissue epithelium, and morbid tissues such as lung, spleen, and heart) and 54 HS samples (nasal swabs and morbid tissues) from 50 cattle of various ages and sexes, all showing clinical signs of suspected concurrent HS and FMD infection. After sample processing, molecular detection of FMDV and its serotypes was performed using Reverse Transcriptase PCR (RT-PCR) with universal and serotype-specific primers. The HS-causing agent, P. multocida type B:2, was initially identified through cultural and morphological characteristics on various media, followed by Gram's and methylene blue staining, biochemical tests, and pathogenicity tests through inoculation of isolates into mice. Finally, molecular detection of P. multocida type B:2 was confirmed using PCR with specific primers. Forty-five (83 %) of the 54 FMD suspected samples tested positive for FMDV, with 53 % of these positive for serotype 'O,' 17 % for serotype 'A,' and 6 % for mixed serotypes 'O' and 'A.' Among the FMDV-positive samples, 17 (38 %) of the HS-suspected samples tested positive for concurrent infection with P. multocida type B:2. The study reveals that FMDV-induced acute immunosuppression in cattle can lead to complications from concurrent infections, particularly those caused by P. multocida type B:2, resulting in HS alongside FMD.

Abstract:Bovine viral diarrhea (BVD) is an economically significant diseases in the bovine industry causing severe economic losses and there is no specific treatment so the primary aim of control to detect and remove persistently infected cattle (PI carriers) which serve as a virus source by shedding the virus life along and responsible for the presence of the virus within herds. So early diagnosis of PI animal is the critical point. To our knowledge, there have been no reports about the disease’s situation in New valley province, Egypt. The goal of this study was to serodiagnosis of BVD infection by Serum Neutralization Test (SNT) and early diagnosis of PI animals using BVDV Ag (POC)Test and Double antibody Sandwich ELISA (DS. ELISA) .In this study a total of 320 cattle of different ages, sexes, and breeds (not previously vaccinated with BVD vaccines) were screened clinically for symptoms of BVD infection, 92 cattle out of the totally screened 320 cattle showed clinical signs arousing suspicion of BVD( respiratory manifestation, diarrhea, growth retardation, oral lesion, and abortion) and undergo SNT and the result shows the percent of infection was 31.5% (29/ 92) .20 animal out of 92 clinically diseased undergo BVDV Ag Point-of-Care Test for detection of PI animal, 11 out of 20 examined cattle (55 %) were positive. PI animal was found to be high in cattle aged>2 months – 6 months than in other age groups. Also, male cattle had a greater infection rate than female ones, and infection was high in Frisian than in native bread. For more accurate confirmation five positive PI animal undergo (DS. ELISA). All Five positive PI animal were positive in ELISA (100% compatibility).
Characterization of the O/ME-SA/Ind-2001d foot-and-mouth disease virus epidemic recorded in the Maghreb during 2014-2015

Abstract:The O/ME-SA/Ind-2001d has been the main foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) lineage responsible for FMD epidemics outside the Indian subcontinent from 2013 to 2017. In 2014, outbreaks caused by this FMDV lineage were reported in Maghreb, where it was initially detected in Algeria and Tunisia and later in Morocco. This was the first incursion of an FMDV type O of exotic origin in the Maghreb region after 14 years of absence. In this study, we report analyses of both VP1 and whole-genome sequences (WGSs) generated from 22 isolates collected in Algeria and Tunisia between 2014 and 2015. All the WGSs analysed showed a minimum pairwise identity of 98.9% at the nucleotide level and 99% at the amino acid level (FMDV coding region). All Tunisian sequences shared a single putative common ancestor closely related to FMDV strains circulating in Libya during 2013. Whereas sequences from Algeria suggest the country experienced two virus introductions. The first introduction is represented by strains circulating in 2014 which are closely related to those from Tunisia, the second one, of which the origin is more uncertain, includes strains collected in Algeria in 2015 that gave origin to the 2015 outbreak reported in Morocco. Overall, our results demonstrated that a unique introduction of O/Ind-2001d FMDV occurred in Maghreb through Tunisia presumably in 2014, and from then the virus spread into Algeria and later into Morocco.
Serosurvey and associated risk factors for bovine viral diarrhea virus infection in cattle in Egypt

Abstract:Bovine viral diarrhea virus (BVDV), is widely spread, poses a considerable risk of infection in the majority of dairy farms, causing respiratory, gastrointestinal, and reproductive problems. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence and the risk variables associated with the seroprevalence of BVDV infection in cattle in four Egyptian governorates. A total of 680 blood samples were collected from cattle and examined for the presence of antibodies against BVDV using indirect ELISA (iELISA). Reproductive and management factors were considered, and epidemiological surveys were conducted. The total seroprevalence of BVDV in cattle was 18.24% (124/680) and it was significantly higher in females 19.66% (116/590), cattle older than 8 years 22.14% (62/280), dairy animals 22.65% (94/514), introduction of new animals to herd 21.39% (89/416), breeding with artificial insemination 28.46% (74/260), animals with history of abortion 28.76% (49/357), or during lactation stage 23% (89/387). The present findings suggest that BVD is prevalent in Egyptian dairy cattle and has an impact on farm productivity and production. Therefore, older, lactating, and aborted animals should also be identified for the disease, pose a risk of infection, and be handled appropriately.
