Abstract:Glioblastoma is one of the central nervous system most aggressive and lethal cancers with poor overall survival rate. Systemic treatment of glioblastoma remains the most challenging aspect due to the low permeability of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and blood-tumor barrier (BTB), limiting therapeutics extravasation mainly in the core tumor as well as in its surrounding invading areas. It is now possible to overcome these barriers by using low-intensity focused ultrasound (LIFU) together with intravenously administered oscillating microbubbles (MBs). LIFU is a non-invasive technique using converging ultrasound waves which can alter the permeability of BBB/BTB to drug delivery in a specific brain/tumor region. This emerging technique has proven to be both safe and repeatable without causing injury to the brain parenchyma including neurons and other structures. Furthermore, LIFU is also approved by the FDA to treat essential tremors and Parkinson's disease. It is currently under clinical trial in patients suffering from glioblastoma as a drug delivery strategy and liquid biopsy for glioblastoma biomarkers. The use of LIFU+MBs is a step-up in the world of drug delivery, where onco-therapeutics of different molecular sizes and weights can be delivered directly into the brain/tumor parenchyma. Initially, several potent drugs targeting glioblastoma were limited to cross the BBB/BTB; however, using LIFU+MBs, diverse therapeutics showed significantly higher uptake, improved tumor control, and overall survival among different species. Here, we highlight the therapeutic approach of LIFU+MBs mediated drug-delivery in the treatment of glioblastoma.

Abstract:Purpose: Brain tumors, particularly glioblastoma multiforme (GBM), present significant prognostic challenges despite multimodal therapies, including surgical resection, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. One major obstacle is the limited drug delivery across the blood-brain barrier (BBB). Focused ultrasound (FUS) combined with systemically administered microbubbles has emerged as a non-invasive, targeted, and reversible approach to transiently open the BBB, thus enhancing drug delivery. This review examines clinical trials employing BBB opening techniques to optimise pharmacotherapy for brain tumors, evaluates current challenges, and proposes directions for further research. Methods: A systematic literature search was conducted in PubMed and ClinicalTrials.gov up to November 2023, searching for "ultrasound" AND "brain tumor". The search yielded 1446 results. After screening by title and abstract, followed by full-text screening (n = 48), 35 studies were included in the analysis. Results: Our analysis includes data from 11 published studies and 24 ongoing trials. The predominant focus of these studies is on glioma, including GMB and astrocytoma. One paper investigated brain metastasis from breast cancer. Evidence indicates that FUS facilitates BBB opening and enhances drug uptake following sonication. Exploration of FUS in the pediatric population is limited, with no published studies and only three ongoing trials dedicated to this demographic. Conclusion: FUS is a promising strategy to safely disrupt the BBB, enabling precise and non-invasive lesion targeting, and enhance drug delivery. However, pharmacokinetic studies are required to quantitatively assess improvements in drug uptake. Most studies are phase I clinical trials, and long-term follow-up investigating patient outcomes is essential to evaluate the clinical benefit of this treatment approach. Further studies involving diverse populations and pathologies will be beneficial.

Abstract:Background: A key challenge in the medical treatment of brain tumors is the limited penetration of most chemotherapeutic agents across the blood-brain barrier (BBB) into the tumor and the infiltrative margin around the tumor. Magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) is a promising tool to enhance the delivery of chemotherapeutic agents into brain tumors. Objective: To review the mechanism of FUS, preclinical evidence, and clinical studies that used low-frequency FUS for a BBB opening in gliomas. Methods: Literature review. Results: The potential of externally delivered low-intensity ultrasound for a temporally and spatially precise and predictable disruption of the BBB has been investigated for over a decade, yielding extensive preclinical literature demonstrating that FUS can disrupt the BBB in a spatially targeted and temporally reversible manner. Studies in animal models documented that FUS enhanced the delivery of numerous chemotherapeutic and investigational agents across the BBB and into brain tumors, including temozolomide, bevacizumab, 1,3-bis (2-chloroethyl)-1-nitrosourea, doxorubicin, viral vectors, and cells. Chemotherapeutic interventions combined with FUS slowed tumor progression and improved animal survival. Recent advances of MRgFUS systems allow precise, temporally and spatially controllable, and safe transcranial delivery of ultrasound energy. Initial clinical evidence in glioma patients has shown the efficacy of MRgFUS in disrupting the BBB, as demonstrated by an enhanced gadolinium penetration. Conclusion: Thus far, a temporary disruption of the BBB followed by the administration of chemotherapy has been both feasible and safe. Further studies are needed to determine the actual drug delivery, including the drug distribution at a tissue-level scale, as well as effects on tumor growth and patient prognosis.

Abstract:The presence of blood–brain barrier (BBB) and/or blood–brain–tumor barriers (BBTB) is one of the main obstacles to effectively deliver therapeutics to our central nervous system (CNS); hence, the outcomes following treatment of malignant brain tumors remain unsatisfactory. Although some approaches regarding BBB disruption or drug modifications have been explored, none of them reach the criteria of success. Convention-enhanced delivery (CED) directly infuses drugs to the brain tumor and surrounding tumor infiltrating area over a long period of time using special catheters. Focused ultrasound (FUS) now provides a non-invasive method to achieve this goal via combining with systemically circulating microbubbles to locally enhance the vascular permeability. In this review, different approaches of delivering therapeutic agents to the brain tumors will be discussed as well as the characterization of BBB and BBTB. We also highlight the mechanism of FUS-induced BBB modulation and the current progress of this technology in both pre-clinical and clinical studies.

Abstract:Background: This scoping review aims to comprehensively review the available literature on the safety and efficacy of focused ultrasound (FUS) for blood-brain barrier disruption (BBBD) in patients with high-grade gliomas, including glioblastoma (GBM). High-grade gliomas pose significant challenges in neuro-oncology due to their aggressiveness and intricate location, often limiting the efficacy of traditional treatments. FUS offers a promising approach by transiently disrupting the blood-brain barrier, thereby facilitating enhanced drug delivery to tumor cells while minimizing systemic side effects. Methods: A scoping review adhering to PRISMA guidelines was conducted to explore the literature on FUS-induced BBBD in glioma patients. PubMed and Embase databases were searched from inception to April 2024 using defined keywords. Original clinical studies focusing on FUS for BBBD in gliomas were included. Two reviewers independently screened records, with conflicts resolved by a third reviewer. Data extraction and quality assessment were performed accordingly. Results: A total of 1,310 studies were initially identified, resulting in nine eligible studies after screening and selection. These studies, published between 2016 and 2024, included 106 patients (39.6 % female) with ages ranging from 29 to 80 years. Recurrent GBM was the most common diagnosis (100 patients), with other diagnoses including anaplastic astrocytoma, diffuse infiltrating glioma, and oligodendroglioma. Various FUS devices and microbubble contrast agents were employed across the studies. Safety and efficacy were assessed in both experimental and clinical settings, with no significant adverse events reported during BBBD procedures. Notably, BBBD facilitated enhanced drug delivery to tumor tissue, demonstrating potential therapeutic benefits. Conclusion: Studies investigating BBBD using FUS demonstrate promising outcomes in experimental and clinical settings. BBBD procedures in patients with malignant gliomas and recurrent GBM show safety and successful enhancement of drug delivery potential. Overall, FUS-mediated BBBD emerges as a safe and feasible approach for improving therapeutic outcomes in brain tumor patients, warranting further clinical exploration and optimization.

Abstract:Infiltrating gliomas are challenging to treat, as the blood-brain barrier significantly impedes the success of therapeutic interventions. While some clinical trials for high-grade gliomas have shown promise, patient outcomes remain poor. Microbubble-enhanced focused ultrasound (MB-FUS) is a rapidly evolving technology with demonstrated safety and efficacy in opening the blood-brain barrier across various disease models, including infiltrating gliomas. Initially recognized for its role in augmenting drug delivery, the potential of MB-FUS to augment liquid biopsy and immunotherapy is gaining research momentum. In this review, we will highlight recent advancements in preclinical and clinical studies that utilize focused ultrasound to treat gliomas and discuss the potential future uses of image-guided precision therapy using focused ultrasound.

Abstract:Focused ultrasound (FUS) combined with intravascularly circulating microbubbles can transiently increase the permeability of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) to enable targeted therapeutic delivery to the brain, the clinical testing of which is currently underway in both adult and pediatric patients. Aside from traditional cancer drugs, this technique is being extended to promote the delivery of immunomodulating therapeutics to the brain, including antibodies, immune cells, and cytokines. In this manner, FUS approaches are being explored as a tool to improve and amplify the effectiveness of immunotherapy for both primary and metastatic brain cancer, a particularly challenging solid tumor to treat. Here, we present an overview of the latest groundbreaking research in FUS-assisted delivery of immunomodulating agents to the brain in pre-clinical models of brain cancer, and place it within the context of the current immunotherapy approaches. We follow this up with a discussion on new developments and emerging strategies for this rapidly evolving approach.

Abstract:Background: Focused Ultrasound (FUS) is gaining a therapeutic role in neuro-oncology considering its novelty and non-invasiveness. Multiple pre-clinical studies show the efficacy of FUS mediated ablation and Blood-Brain Barrier (BBB) opening in high-grade glioma (HGG), but there is still poor evidence in humans, mainly aimed towards assessing FUS safety. Methods: With this systematic review our aim is, firstly, to summarize how FUS is proposed for human HGG treatment. Secondly, we focus on future perspectives and new therapeutic options. Using PRISMA 2020 guidelines, we reviewed case series and trials with description of patient characteristics, pre- and post-operative treatments and FUS outcomes. We considered nine case series (five about tumor ablation and four about BBB opening) with FUS-treated HGG patients between 1991 and 2021. Results: Sixty-eight patients were considered in total, mostly males (67.6%), with a mean age of 50.5 ± 15.3 years old. Major complication rates were found in the tumor ablation group (26.1%). FUS has been rarely applied for direct tumoral ablation in human HGG patients with controversial results, but at the best of current studies, FUS-mediated BBB opening is showing good results with very low complication rates, paving the way for a new reliable technique to improve local chemotherapy delivery and antitumoral immune response. Conclusions: FUS can become a complementary technique to surgical resection and standard radiochemotherapy in recurrent HGG. Ongoing trials could provide in the near future more data on FUS-mediated BBB opening impact on progression-free survival, overall survival and potential drug-delivery capacities.

Abstract:Abstract OBJECTIVES DIPG/DMG is a fatal brain tumor developing in delicate areas of the brain with a median overall survival of 1 year. The dismal outcome is partly due to the blood-brain barrier (BBB) which poses a major challenge to delivering effective therapeutic agents. Over the past 4 years we opened two Phase I clinical trials using Delsona focused ultrasound (FUS) device developed at Columbia University to treat pediatric and AYA patients with relapsed DMG. In the first study, we delivered FUS with concomitant panobinostat and during the second study we gave oral etoposide. Here we present our experience of delivering neuronavigation based FUS for pediatric patients with progressive DMG. METHODS Pediatric and AYA patients with biopsy proven DIPG/DMG at disease progression were enrolled (FUS with oral panobinostat: NCT04804709 and FUS with oral etoposide: NCT05762419). Patients were allowed to have prior therapies, including radiation and reirradiation. FUS was delivered over the course of six or four cycles respectively. MRI was performed to validate BBB-opening and closure. RESULTS During the FUS-panobinostat study, we treated 3 patients. The study was closed prematurely when panobinostat was taken off the US market. In the FUS-etoposide study, we have already treated 2 patients (the study is currently open). For the two trials combined, we delivered over twenty-five FUS treatments. Four of the five patients treated had achieved BBB-opening. Two patients in the FUS and panobinostat study showed improvement in their neurological symptoms. The average time for FUS-delivery was approximately 47 minutes. All treatments were performed in the outpatient settings in the Department of Radiation Oncology. Side effects from FUS was limited to one grade 1 dermatological toxicity. CONCLUSION FUS-mediated BBB-opening delivered as an outpatient procedure is feasible, to date, in children with relapsed DIPG/DMG. Further studies are needed to assess for efficacy.

Abstract:Abstract Blood-brain/blood-tumor barriers (BBB and BTB) and interstitial transport may constitute major obstacles to the transport of therapeutics in brain tumors. In this study, we examined the impact of focused ultrasound (FUS) in combination with microbubbles on the transport of two relevant chemotherapy-based anticancer agents in HER2-positive breast cancer brain metastases at cellular resolution: the non-targeted chemotherapeutic doxorubicin and the antibody-drug conjugate ado- trastuzumab emtansine (T-DM1). Using an orthotopic xenograft model of HER2-positive breast cancer brain metastasis and quantitative microscopy we demonstrate multifold increases in the extravasation of both agents (7-fold and 2-fold for doxorubicin and T-DM1, respectively) and we provide evidence of increased drug penetration (>100μm vs. < 20μm and 42±7μm vs. 12±4μm for doxorubicin and T-DM1, respectively) after application of FUS as compared to control (non-FUS). Integration of experimental data with physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) modeling of drug transport reveals that FUS in combination with microbubbles alleviates vascular barriers and enhances interstitial convective transport via increase in hydraulic conductivity. Combination of experimental data and PBPK modeling suggests that FUS in combination with microbubbles increases the endothelial cell transmembrane transport and uptake. PBPK modelling indicates selective increase in transvascular transport of the non- targeted small chemotherapeutic doxorubicin through small vessel-wall pores size with a narrow range (Diameter: 10-50nm). Our work provides a quantitative framework for the optimization of FUS-drug combinations to maximize intratumoral drug delivery and facilitate the development of novel therapeutic strategies against brain metastases.
Blood-Brain Barrier Opening in Primary Brain Tumors with Non-invasive MR-Guided Focused Ultrasound: A Clinical Safety and Feasibility Study

Abstract:The blood-brain barrier (BBB) has long limited therapeutic access to brain tumor and peritumoral tissue. In animals, MR-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) with intravenously injected microbubbles can temporarily and repeatedly disrupt the BBB in a targeted fashion, without open surgery. Our objective is to demonstrate safety and feasibility of MRgFUS BBB opening with systemically administered chemotherapy in patients with glioma in a phase I, single-arm, open-label study. Five patients with previously confirmed or suspected high-grade glioma based on imaging underwent the MRgFUS in conjunction with administration of chemotherapy (n = 1 liposomal doxorubicin, n = 4 temozolomide) one day prior to their scheduled surgical resection. Samples of "sonicated" and "unsonicated" tissue were measured for the chemotherapy by liquid-chromatography-mass spectrometry. Complete follow-up was three months. The procedure was well-tolerated, with no adverse clinical or radiologic events related to the procedure. The BBB within the target volume showed radiographic evidence of opening with an immediate 15-50% increased contrast enhancement on T1-weighted MRI, and resolution approximately 20 hours after. Biochemical analysis of sonicated versus unsonicated tissue suggest chemotherapy delivery is feasible. In this study, we demonstrated transient BBB opening in tumor and peritumor tissue using non-invasive low-intensity MRgFUS with systemically administered chemotherapy was safe and feasible. The characterization of therapeutic delivery and clinical response to this treatment paradigm requires further investigation.

Abstract:OBJECTIVES To evaluate the effects of bolt torque, wire size, and component reuse on the ability to maintain wire tension in 3 external skeletal fixation systems. STUDY DESIGN Biomechanical study. METHODS Yield strength in tension of 1.0-, 1.2-, 1.5-, and 1.6-mm-diameter wires, and yield strength in torque of Hofmann Small Bone Fixation (SBF) cannulated and slotted bolts and IMEX regular and miniature bolts were determined on a testing machine. The minimum bolt tightening torque needed to prevent wire slippage at clinically recommended wire tensions was determined. Components were tested 10 times, and loads at slippage were recorded. RESULTS The IMEX system required a mean of 8 Nm of bolt tightening torque to maintain 900 N (1.6-mm wires). The SBF system required a mean of 3 Nm bolt torque to maintain 300 N (1.0-mm wires) and 5 Nm to maintain 600 N (1.2-mm wires). The SBF cannulated bolt required 9 Nm of torque to maintain 900 N (1.5-mm wires). The SBF slotted bolts could only maintain 800 N before yield. The IMEX miniature system required a mean bolt torque of 1.1 Nm to maintain 300 N. The cannulated and slotted bolts from both manufacturers failed to maintain 70% of initial wire tension after 7 and 4 uses, respectively. CONCLUSIONS The IMEX systems and the SBF system using 1.0- and 1.2-mm wires could maintain clinically recommended wire tension safely. Only the IMEX system could maintain clinically recommended wire tension safely using 1.5- or 1.6-mm wires. CLINICAL RELEVANCE The SBF system using 1.0- and 1.2-mm wires and the IMEX system using all wire sizes can maintain clinically relevant wire tension. The SBF system using 1.5-mm wires could not. Cannulated and slotted bolts should not be used more than 6 and 3 times, respectively. Nuts should not be reused.

Abstract:Ultrasound waves were initially used as a diagnostic tool that provided critical insights into several pathological conditions (e.g., gallstones, ascites, pneumothorax, etc.) at the bedside. Over the past decade, advancements in technology have led to the use of ultrasound waves in treating many neurological conditions, such as essential tremor and Parkinson's disease, with high specificity. The convergence of ultrasound waves at a specific region of interest/target while avoiding surrounding tissue has led to the coined term "focused ultrasound (FUS)." In tumor research, ultrasound technology was initially used as an intraoperative guidance tool for tumor resection. However, in recent years, there has been growing interest in utilizing FUS as a therapeutic tool in the management of brain tumors such as gliomas. This mini-review highlights the current knowledge surrounding using FUS as a treatment modality for gliomas. Furthermore, we discuss the utility of FUS in enhanced drug delivery to the central nervous system (CNS) and highlight promising clinical trials that utilize FUS as a treatment modality for gliomas.

Abstract:Focused Ultrasound (FUS) in combination with gaseous microbubbles has emerged as a potential new means of effective drug delivery to the brain. Recent research has shown that, under burst-type energy exposure with the presence of microbubbles, this modality can transiently permeate the blood-brain barrier (BBB). The bioavailability of therapeutic agents is site-specifically augmented only in the zone where the FUS energy is targeted. The non-invasiveness of this approach makes FUS-induced BBB opening a novel and attractive means to perform localized CNS therapeutic agent delivery. Over the past decade, FUS-BBB opening has been preclinically confirmed to successfully enhance CNS penetration of therapeutic agents including chemotherapeutic agents, therapeutic peptides, monoclonal antibodies, and nanoparticles. Recently, a number of clinical human trials have begun to explore clinical utility. This review article, explores this technology through its physical mechanisms, summarizes the existing preclinical findings (including current medical device designs and technical approaches), and summarizes current ongoing clinical trials.

Abstract:Background: Focused ultrasound (FUS) shows promise for enhancing drug delivery to the brain by temporarily opening the blood-brain barrier (BBB), and it is increasingly used in the clinical setting to treat brain tumours. It remains however unclear whether FUS is being introduced in an ethically and methodologically sound manner. The IDEAL-D framework for the introduction of surgical innovations and the SYRCLE and ROBINS-I tools for assessing the risk of bias in animal studies and non-randomized trials, respectively, provide a comprehensive evaluation for this. Objectives and methods: A comprehensive literature review on FUS in neuro-oncology was conducted. Subsequently, the included studies were evaluated using the IDEAL-D framework, SYRCLE, and ROBINS-I tools. Results: In total, 19 published studies and 12 registered trials were identified. FUS demonstrated successful BBB disruption, increased drug delivery, and improved survival rates. However, the SYRCLE analysis revealed a high risk of bias in animal studies, while the ROBINS-I analysis found that most human studies had a high risk of bias due to a lack of blinding and heterogeneous samples. Of the 15 pre-clinical stage 0 studies, only six had formal ethical approval, and only five followed animal care policies. Both stage 1 studies and stage 1/2a studies failed to provide information on patient data confidentiality. Overall, no animal or human study reached the IDEAL-D stage endpoint. Conclusion: FUS holds promise for enhancing drug delivery to the brain, but its development and implementation must adhere to rigorous safety standards using the established ethical and methodological frameworks. The complementary use of IDEAL-D, SYRCLE, and ROBINS-I tools indicates a high risk of bias and ethical limitations in both animal and human studies, highlighting the need for further improvements in study design for a safe implementation of FUS in neuro-oncology.
Biomarkers and focused ultrasound: the future of liquid biopsy for brain tumor patients

Abstract:Introduction: Despite advances in modern medicine, brain tumor patients are still monitored purely by clinical evaluation and imaging. Traditionally, invasive strategies such as open or stereotactic biopsies have been used to confirm the etiology of clinical and imaging changes. Liquid biopsies can enable physicians to noninvasively analyze the evolution of a tumor and a patient's response to specific treatments. However, as a consequence of biology and the current limitations in detection methods, no blood or cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) brain tumor-derived biomarkers are used in routine clinical practice. Enhancing the presence of tumor biomarkers in blood and CSF via brain-blood barrier (BBB) disruption with MRI-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) is a very compelling strategy for future management of brain tumor patients. Methods: A literature review on MRgFUS-enabled brain tumor liquid biopsy was performed using Medline/Pubmed databases and clinical trial registries. Results: The therapeutic applications of MRgFUS to target brain tumors have been under intense investigation. At high-intensity, MRgFUS can ablate brain tumors and target tissues, which needs to be balanced with the increased risk for damage to surrounding normal structures. At lower-intensity and pulsed-frequency, MRgFUS may be able to disrupt the BBB transiently. Thus, while facilitating intratumoral or parenchymal access to standard or novel therapeutics, BBB disruption with MRgFUS has opened the possibility of enhanced detection of brain tumor-derived biomarkers. Conclusions: In this review, we describe the concept of MRgFUS-enabled brain tumor liquid biopsy and present the available preclinical evidence, ongoing clinical trials, limitations, and future directions of this application.
MR-guided focused ultrasound-induced blood-brain barrier opening for brain metastasis: a review

Abstract:Although the therapeutic armamentarium for brain metastases (BMs) has been expanded from innovative surgical techniques and radiotherapy to include targeted therapies and immunotherapy, the prognosis of BMs remains poor. Despite the proven efficacy of numerous compounds in preclinical studies, the limited penetration of promising therapeutic agents across the blood-brain barrier (BBB) remains an unaddressed issue. Recently, low-intensity magnetic resonance-guided focused ultrasound (MRgFUS) in combination with microbubbles has been shown to overcome vascular and cellular transport barriers in the brain and tumor microenvironment, resulting in increased drug diffusion and preliminary effective results. Preclinical studies have investigated the increased penetration of many therapeutic agents including doxorubicin, trastuzumab, and ipilimumab into the CNS with promising results. Furthermore, anticancer drugs combined with MRgFUS-induced BBB opening have been demonstrated to improve animal survival and slow tumor progression. Accordingly, the first clinical trial has recently been launched and hopefully the results will provide evidence for the safety and efficacy of drug delivery enhanced by MRgFUS-induced BBB opening in BMs. This review aims to provide an overview of transcranial low-intensity MRgFUS application for BBB disruption and a comprehensive overview of the most relevant evidence in the treatment of BMs.
Enhancing drug delivery for boron neutron capture therapy of brain tumors with focused ultrasound

Abstract:Background: Glioblastoma is a notoriously difficult tumor to treat because of its relative sanctuary in the brain and infiltrative behavior. Therapies need to penetrate the CNS but avoid collateral tissue injury. Boron neutron capture therapy (BNCT) is a treatment whereby a (10)B-containing drug preferentially accumulates in malignant cells and causes highly localized damage when exposed to epithermal neutron irradiation. Studies have suggested that (10)B-enriched L-4-boronophenylalanine-fructose (BPA-f) complex uptake can be improved by enhancing the permeability of the cerebrovasculature with osmotic agents. We investigated the use of MRI-guided focused ultrasound, in combination with injectable microbubbles, to noninvasively and focally augment the uptake of BPA-f. Methods: With the use of a 9L gliosarcoma tumor model in Fisher 344 rats, the blood-brain and blood-tumor barriers were disrupted with pulsed ultrasound using a 558 kHz transducer and Definity microbubbles, and BPA-f (250 mg/kg) was delivered intravenously over 2 h. (10)B concentrations were estimated with imaging mass spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy. Results: The tumor to brain ratio of (10)B was 6.7 ± 0.5 with focused ultrasound and only 4.1 ± 0.4 in the control group (P < .01), corresponding to a mean tumor [(10)B] of 123 ± 25 ppm and 85 ± 29 ppm, respectively. (10)B uptake in infiltrating clusters treated with ultrasound was 0.86 ± 0.10 times the main tumor concentration, compared with only 0.29 ± 0.08 in controls. Conclusions: Ultrasound increases the accumulation of (10)B in the main tumor and infiltrating cells. These findings, in combination with the expanding clinical use of focused ultrasound, may offer improvements in BNCT and the treatment of glioblastoma.

Abstract:In this article, a concept of passive bistatic SAR (PB-SAR) imaging using a spaceborne SAR radar transmitter of opportunity is presented. This was proposed for the first time in the beginning of this century by Krieger et al and Griffiths et al. Because passive imaging is completely covert and relatively cheap, as it does not require its own transmitter, and the rapid growth of the computational power of processors has made it possible, the topic has attracted the attention of many research institutes. Recently, several bistatic radar experiments have been carried out using ground stationary receivers and spaceborne illuminators, and the results have shown new capabilities of SAR imaging. In most of these trials, cooperative illuminators were used and placed on satellite platforms developed by the country conducting the experiment, means that the receiver has exact a priori information about the transmitter's parameters (e.g., carrier frequency, signal parameters, chirp duration, pulse repetition frequency [PRF], etc.). To obtain a passive SAR image when the parameters are roughly known, additional techniques for signal analysis and parameter estimation have to be applied, which make the processing more sophisticated. In this article, the challenges and limitations of the PB-SAR imaging are discussed, and the differences in the signal processing chain in mono- and bistatic configurations are indicated. Finally, the recent results of real passive SAR images are presented. The results were obtained by the Warsaw University of Technology (WUT) in 2013, using their passive radar demonstrator mounted on the ground. As the transmitter of opportunity, the TerraSAR-X satellite was used.
