Abstract:Lakes dominated by cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CyanoHABs) are geographically widespread. These blooms are associated with fish kills and toxin production and have negative impacts on human health. There is compelling evidence that, in addition to nitrogen and phosphorus, iron (Fe) can also regulate CyanoHABs. Low Fe concentration (tens of ng L−1) has been documented to limit CyanoHABs in freshwaters, whereas high Fe concentration (hundreds of μg L−1) can promote CyanoHABs. However, the extent to which Fe influences CyanoHABs in lakes that lack an extensive anoxic zone and where the Fe concentration ranges from tens to <400 μg L−1 is unclear. The aim of this study was to assess Fe trends, measured as dissolved Fe (DFe), associated with cyanobacteria dynamics in lakes in northwestern Iowa. We utilised a multiwavelength fluorometer to monitor and classify phytoplankton based on their unique fluorescence spectra from chlorophyll a (Chl-a) and accessory pigments. Here we report a declining DFe trend (drawdown) potentially due to phytoplankton uptake in East Okoboji and its effect on CyanoHABs. Multiwavelength fluorescence data show cyanobacteria peaked (>50% cyanobacteria Chl-a) during a DFe minimum. The DFe is inversely correlated with phosphorus, suggesting decoupled Fe and phosphorus cycling. The strong positive correlation between phosphorus and cyanobacteria Chl-a supports a role for phosphorus in triggering CyanoHABs. This study suggests an underlying mechanistic role of Fe on CyanoHABs; the intermediate range of Fe concentrations investigated here may be sufficient to sustain CyanoHABs.

The Effect of Bioavailable Sedimentary Iron on the Growth of Cyanobacteria in Eutrophic Lakes

Abstract:The objectives of this study were to investigate whether sedimentary iron can promote the growth of cyanobacteria and determine the effects of different forms of iron on cyanobacterial growth. In this study, we simulated cyanobacterial growth in a eutrophic freshwater lake under Fe-deficient conditions using three systems containing artificial lake water and algae (the WA system); artificial lake water and sediment (WS system); and artificial lake water, sediment and algae (the WSA system). Results demonstrate that Fe from sediments did facilitate cyanobacterial growth. Sequential Fe extractions revealed that the majority of sedimentary iron was in the form of reactive iron (80.63%). Furthermore, cellular iron from cyanobacteria and water-soluble Fe in sediments had a strong and significant negative correlation (− 0.792, P < 0.01), indicating that water-soluble Fe in sediments is the most important form of iron for influencing cyanobacterial growth. Further studies on water-soluble Fe mobility showed that up to 47.5% of the released water-soluble Fe could be absorbed into cyanobacterial cells, thereby indicating that water-soluble Fe is significant for cyanobacterial growth and serves as a critical Fe source when lake water iron is limited. In addition, the study found that easily reducible Fe oxide minerals have the largest release potential. These findings provide new insights that could improve management of cyanobacterial blooms.

Abstract:The role of trace metal micronutrients in limiting cyanobacterial growth and structuring the phytoplankton community is becoming more evident. However, little is known regarding the extent of micronutrient limitation in freshwaters or which micronutrient conditions favour potentially-toxic cyanobacteria. To assess how freshwater phytoplankton respond to micronutrient and macronutrient additions, we conducted nutrient amendment bioassays at seven sites across South Eastern-Australia. Sites were variable in cyanobacterial cell densities and phytoplankton community compositions. At two sites, Mannus Lake and Burrendong Dam, micronutrient additions (iron, cobalt, copper, manganese, molybdenum and zinc) increased cyanobacterial growth, indicating micronutrient limitation. Both sites had cyanobacterial blooms present at the onset of the experiment, dominated by Chrysosporum ovalisporum at Mannus Lake and Microcystis aeruginosa at Burrendong Dam. This suggests that micronutrients may be an important regulator of the severity of cyanobacterial blooms and may become limiting when there is high competition for nutrient resources. The addition of the micronutrient mixture resulted in a higher proportion of cyanobacteria compared to the control and a lower diversity community compared to phosphorus additions, indicating that micronutrients can not only influence cyanobacterial biovolume but also their ability to dominate the phytoplankton community. This reinforces that micronutrient requirements of phytoplankton are often species specific. As micronutrient enrichment is often overlooked when assessing nutrient-constraints on cyanobacterial growth, this study provides valuable insight into the conditions that may influence cyanobacterial blooms and the potential contribution of micronutrients to eutrophication.

Abstract:Relatively little work has been done on the role of micronutrients in influencing development and progression of harmful algal blooms. Yet micronutrients are ineluctably required for growth; relatively small changes in micronutrient status have wide-ranging consequences. Here, we report results from mesocosm experiments with Microcystis and Desmodesmus spp., in mono- and mixed-cultures, to probe questions of how copper, iron, and copper-iron amendments affect growth, short-term assemblage progression, and production of siderophore, chalkophore, and microcystin in lake water from a large, hypereutrophic lake (Taihu, China). Our approach is an entirely new perspective to understanding micronutrients dynamics in aqueous environments, as this is the first work to systematically screen for chalkophores and siderophores separately, as a function of copper/iron amendment, and using community trajectory analysis. Singular and novel findings are summarized as follows: 1) unlike lab-based studies, in our work we observe neither dramatic copper-modulation of iron demand, nor evidence of an iron-protective effect from copper toxicity. 2) The interplay between chalkophore/siderophore production supports a concept model wherein Microcystis spp. varies behavior to individually and uniquely manage copper/iron requirements in a phased manner. In being able to specifically screen for chalkophores, we observe a previously unreported link between chalkophore and microcystin production that may relate to iron-limitation. 3) The lake water itself influences mesocosm changes; differentiated effects for iron regarding growth indicators and/or reduction of Fe-limitation stress were found at an HAB-free field station (Xukou Bay), likely a consequence of low bioavailability of iron in this station as compared to HAB-impacted stations (half the initial dissolved iron concentration, persisting throughout experiments). The low dissolved iron accompanies more intense chalkophore/siderophore community trajectories.

Abstract:The global increase in occurrence of harmful algae blooms in lakes has gained widespread attention. Although N and P are the main factors for primary productivity in lake ecosystems, dissolved iron (Fe) plays a crucial role as an essential micronutrient for phytoplankton growth. The interaction between Fe and light in phytoplankton growth is reasonably well studied in marine ecosystems, but there is a lack of understanding of this interaction in lakes. We conducted both a field study and an incubation experiment to identify the role of Fe and light in modulating phytoplankton growth and species composition in a eutrophic lake, Lake Xingkai, Northeast China. We found that the interactions between Fe bioavailability and light intensity impact phytoplankton community structure and Fe uptake. Phytoplankton composition and abundance varied greatly in response to elevated light and Fe. Bacillariophyta are favored under light-Fe co-limitation, while the dominant taxa changed from Bacillariophyta to Cyanophyta and Chlorophyta under elevated Fe and light conditions. We unveil the competitive advantage of a common bloom-forming and N2-fixing algae Anabaena azotica relative to other species under high light and high Fe conditions. Our findings expand the knowledge of Fe-light interactions on phytoplankton growth and provide fresh insight into phytoplankton community responses to variation in light and Fe in eutrophic lakes. This information is important for efficient eutrophication control and lake management.

Abstract:We hypothesize that iron availability plays an important role in driving phytoplankton structure and dynamics in tropical reservoir. This role has often been neglected in routine monitoring of water quality since the main focus has been addressed on macronutrients such phosphorus and nitrogen. To elucidate the potential regulation exerted by iron availability on phytoplankton, a limnological investigation was carried out in two neighboring eutrophic reservoirs in tropical China. Traditional physical and chemical variables were measured along with total and dissolved iron concentrations to explore how they could influence phytoplankton structure. Statistical analyses showed that dissolved iron (DFe) as well as dissolved nitrogen (DIN) and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) significantly explained the variance of phytoplankton assemblages in both reservoirs. We could also find that diazotrophic cyanobacteria blooms generally developed when DFe concentrations were above 0.025 mg/L. Moreover, the DFe availability in the water columns was modulated by the effects exerted by the stratification/circulation patterns on redox conditions and pH values. Anaerobic conditions favored the release of iron and phosphorus from sediments, and likely favored an enhanced nitrogen assimilation and a decrease of DIN in the epilimnion. Our results highlighted that iron functions as an important factor promoting diazotrophic cyanobacteria and driving seasonal phytoplankton succession in tropical eutrophic reservoirs, not only with a direct effect on phytoplankton growth but also indirect effect by modifying the availability of nitrogen and phosphorus.

Abstract:In large lakes, metal availability sometimes limits the acquisition of nutrients (nitrogen, N and phosphorus, P) in offshore waters that are relatively isolated from tributaries and sediments. We hypothesize that metals may also be important within harmful algal blooms (HABs). HABs occur where nutrient loads are elevated, but bioassays often indicate that phytoplankton in HABs are N or P limited. Nutrient limitation may be exacerbated by corresponding limitations in several metals (i.e. nickel - Ni, molybdenum - Mo, zinc - Zn, and iron - Fe) that facilitate uptake and transformation of oxidized and organic forms of nutrients, such as urea, nitrate and organic phosphorus. The cyanotoxin microcystin has been hypothesized to have a role in metal management, so metal demand may also influence the toxicity of HABs. Here, we used nutrient diffusing substrates to measure how N, P, Ni, Mo, Zn and Fe amendments influenced the growth and toxicity of periphyton. Periphyton was grown suspended in 10 nearshore sites in Lake Michigan and Lake Erie (5 with and 5 without perennial HABs). Outside of blooms, we found no evidence for metal limitation or co-limitation. However, evidence for metal co-limitation was observed in two HABs sites (Zn in Green Bay and Zn, Mo, Ni and Fe in Sandusky Bay). N, P and Zn amendments all stimulated microcystin content in Maumee Bay. These data indicate that nutrient limitation occurs even within blooms, and the availability of metals may have an influence on growth, community composition and toxicity.

Abstract:Cyanobacterial blooms are becoming more common in freshwater systems, causing ecological degradation and human health risks through exposure to cyanotoxins. The role of phosphorus and nitrogen in cyanobacterial bloom formation is well documented and these are regularly the focus of management plans. There is also strong evidence that trace metals are required for a wide range of cellular processes, however their importance as a limiting factor of cyanobacterial growth in ecological systems is unclear. Furthermore, some studies have suggested a direct link between cyanotoxin production and some trace metals. This review synthesises current knowledge on the following: (1) the biochemical role of trace metals (particularly iron, cobalt, copper, manganese, molybdenum and zinc), (2) the growth limitation of cyanobacteria by trace metals, (3) the trace metal regulation of the phytoplankton community structure and (4) the role of trace metals in cyanotoxin production. Iron dominated the literature and regularly influenced bloom formation, with 15 of 18 studies indicating limitation or colimitation of cyanobacterial growth. A range of other trace metals were found to have a demonstrated capacity to limit cyanobacterial growth, and these metals require further study. The effect of trace metals on cyanotoxin production is equivocal and highly variable. Better understanding the role of trace metals in cyanobacterial growth and bloom formation is an essential component of freshwater management and a direction for future research.

Abstract:The ventricular activation process of normal pigs as estimated qualitatively from body surface potentials and epicardial electrograms is similar to that accurately described for the dog. Ventricular excitation may be divided sequentially into three components: interventricular septal from left to right, ventricular free-wall from endocardium to epicardium, and septal and ventricular basilar in an apico-basilar direction. The differences between the body surface potentials recorded from the dog and from the pig lies in the greater dorsal magnitude of the terminal basilar forces in the pig.

Abstract:Iron determines the abundance and diversity of life and controls primary production in numerous aqueous environments. Over the past decades, the availability of this metal in natural waters has decreased. Iron deficiency can apply a selective pressure on microbial aquatic communities. Each aquatic organism has their individual requirements for iron and pathways for metal acquisition, despite all having access to the common pool of iron. Cyanobacteria, a photosynthesizing bacterium that can accumulate and form so-called 'algal blooms', have evolved strategies to thrive in such iron-deficient aqueous environments where they can outcompete other organisms in iron acquisition in diverse microbial communities. Metabolic pathways for iron acquisition employed by cyanobacteria allow it to compete successfully for this essential nutrient. By competing more effectively for requisite iron, cyanobacteria can displace other species and grow to dominate the microbial population in a bloom. Aquatic resources are damaged by a diverse number of environmental pollutants that can further decrease metal availability and result in a functional deficiency of available iron. Pollutants can also increase iron demand. A pollutant-exposed microbe is compelled to acquire further metal critical to its survival. Even in pollutant-impacted waters, cyanobacteria enjoy a competitive advantage and cyanobacterial dominance can be the result. We propose that cyanobacteria have a distinct competitive advantage over many other aquatic microbes in polluted, iron-poor environments.
The role of iron in phytoplankton photosynthesis, and the potential for iron-limitation of primary productivity in the sea

Abstract:Iron supply has been suggested to influence phytoplankton biomass, growth rate and species composition, as well as primary productivity in both high and low NO3 (-) surface waters. Recent investigations in the equatorial Pacific suggest that no single factor regulates primary productivity. Rather, an interplay of bottom-up (i.e., ecophysiological) and top-down (i.e., ecological) factors appear to control species composition and growth rates. One goal of biological oceanography is to isolate the effects of single factors from this multiplicity of interactions, and to identify the factors with a disproportionate impact. Unfortunately, our tools, with several notable exceptions, have been largely inadequate to the task. In particular, the standard technique of nutrient addition bioassays cannot be undertaken without introducing artifacts. These so-called 'bottle effects' include reducing turbulence, isolating the enclosed sample from nutrient resupply and grazing, trapping the isolated sample at a fixed position within the water column and thus removing it from vertical movement through a light gradient, and exposing the sample to potentially stimulatory or inhibitory substances on the enclosure walls. The problem faced by all users of enrichment experiments is to separate the effects of controlled nutrient additions from uncontrolled changes in other environmental and ecological factors. To overcome these limitations, oceanographers have sought physiological or molecular indices to diagnose nutrient limitation in natural samples. These indices are often based on reductions in the abundance of photosynthetic and other catalysts, or on changes in the efficiency of these catalysts. Reductions in photosynthetic efficiency often accompany nutrient limitation either because of accumulation of damage, or impairment of the ability to synthesize fully functional macromolecular assemblages. Many catalysts involved in electron transfer and reductive biosyntheses contain iron, and the abundances of most of these catalysts decline under iron-limited conditions. Reductions of ferredoxin or cytochrome f content, nitrate assimilation rates, and dinitrogen fixation rates are amongst the diagnostics that have been used to infer iron limitation in some marine systems. An alternative approach to diagnosing iron-limitation uses molecules whose abundance increases in response to iron-limitation. These include cell surface iron-transport proteins, and the electron transfer protein flavodoxin which replaces the Fe-S protein ferredoxin in many Fe-deficient algae and cyanobacteria.

Abstract:Background Renal parenchymal volume (RPV) is considered an important index for clinical decisions. However, normal values have not been established, which hinders the clinical application of RPV. Purpose To test the accuracy and reproducibility of RPV and to investigate the normal values of RPV and kidney length as measured by non-enhanced multidetector computed tomography (CT). Material and Methods An animal model study was performed to test the accuracy and repeatability of RPV measured by CT. RPV of porcine kidneys was measured by water displacement (actual values) and non-enhanced multidetector CT. Individual RPV and kidney length were measured by non-enhanced CT in patients with no clinical history of renal disease (n = 722). Patient height, age, weight, body surface area (BSA), and body mass index (BMI) were assessed before each patient's CT examination was performed. Results RPV obtained by the CT method was within 2% of the RPV determined by the water displacement method. The normal values of RPV (M ± 1.96 standard deviation [SD]) were 145.72 ± 54.37 mL for men and 132.46 ± 41.94 mL for women. The normal values of kidney length (M ± 1.96 SD) were 10.27 ± 1.98 cm for men and 9.93 ± 1.58 cm for women. RPV did not significantly correlate with BSA or weight in women, but correlated significantly with height and age in both men and women. Of the assessed factors age, weight, height, BSA, and BMI, age, and height were the independent factors that best reflected RPV, in both men and women. Conclusion The present animal study results showed that non-enhanced multidetector CT findings accurately reflect the RPV. The subsequent study performed in humans showed that the RPV of the presently sampled Chinese population was lower than the commonly quoted reference values obtained from Western populations.
Trace Metal Distribution in Phytoplankton- and Macrophyte-Dominated Zones of A Large, Eutrophic Freshwater Lake, Taihu

Abstract:Phytoplankton and macrophytes are major primary producers and play important roles in driving the biogeochemical cycling of trace metals in aquatic ecosystems. In this study, we examined the distribution of trace metals in lake water and sediments of different lake zones (phytoplankton- and macrophyte-dominated) in a large, shallow, eutrophic freshwater lake in summer. The labile metal concentrations in lake water were determined with diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) technique. Metal concentrations in bloom assemblages and macrophyte materials were measured. The results demonstrated that dissolved metal concentrations exhibited dramatically different distribution patterns in different lake zones, whereas metal concentrations in sediments were less influenced. Cadmium (Cd) was highly accumulated by Microcystis (cyanobacteria) bloom assemblages, suggesting that the decay and deposition of Microcystis-bloom detritus may contribute to the enriched Cd in the phytoplankton-dominated lake zone. The dissolved and labile copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) concentrations were quite low in macrophyte-dominated zone, which may be attributed to the bioaccumulation of metals by aquatic macrophytes. Concentrations of labile chromium (Cr) and lead (Pb) in lake water were less influenced by environmental factors, which could be attributed to the higher affinity of these two metals with the sediment particles. Overall, the results of this study implied that different ecological types might have different influences on the transportation and fate of trace metals in aquatic environments, and different metals were characterized with dissimilar cycling behaviors.

Abstract:Iron, as one of the essential mineral elements for algae growth, plays an extremely important role in the physiological processes such as plant photosynthesis, respiration, nitrogen fixation, protein and nucleic acid synthesis. In view of the fact that iron in different forms could be absorbed and utilized by algae, the existing forms and circulation approaches in the aquatic environment, the absorption mechanism by algae, and the effects on algae growth and microcystin synthesis were reviewed in this paper. The relevant microcystin synthesis genes and their expression under iron restricted conditions were summarized, and the research directions for harmful algal blooms regulation and control by ferritin genes were suggested. It was hoped to provide the reference for eutrophication remediation technology.

Abstract:In a constantly changing environment brought about by the climate crisis and escalated anthropogenic perturbations driven by the growing population, harmful algal bloom dynamics and their impacts are expected to shift, necessitating adaptive management strategies and comprehensive research efforts. Similar to primary productivity, HABs have been thought to be driven primarily by major nutrients such as N, P, and Si. However, recent investigations on the role and importance of micronutrients as limiting factors in aquatic environments have been highlighted. This paper provides a review of metal and phytoplankton interactions, with a specific emphasis on pertinent information on the influence of trace nutrients on growth, toxin production, and other underlying mechanisms related to the dynamics of HABs. Low to near-depleted levels of essential nutrients, including Fe, Cu, Zn, Se, Mn, Co, and Mo, negatively impact cell growth and proliferation of various marine and freshwater HAB species. However, evidence shows that at elevated levels, these trace elements, along with other non-essential ones, could still cause toxic effects to certain HAB species manifested by decreased photosynthetic activities, oxidative stress, ultrastructure damage, and cyst formation. Interestingly, while elevated levels of these metals mostly result in increased toxin production, Co (i.e., yessotoxins, gymnodimine, and palytoxins) and Mn (i.e., isodomoic acid, okadaic and diol esters) enrichments revealed otherwise. In addition to toxin production, releasing dissolved organic matter (DOM), including dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and humic substances, was observed as an adaptation strategy, since these organic compounds have been proven to chelate metals in the water column, thereby reducing metal-induced toxicity. Whilst current research centers on free metal toxicity of specific essential elements such as Cu and Zn, a comprehensive account of how trace metals contribute to the growth, toxin production, and other metabolic processes under conditions reflective of in situ scenarios of HAB-prone areas would yield new perspectives on the roles of trace metals in HABs. Feedback Interactions between Trace Metal Nutrients and Phytoplankton in the Ocean

Abstract:In addition to control by major nutrient elements (nitrogen, phosphorus, and silicon) the productivity and species composition of marine phytoplankton communities are also regulated by a number of trace metal nutrients (iron, zinc, cobalt, manganese, copper, and cadmium). Of these, iron is most limiting to phytoplankton growth and has the greatest effect on algal species diversity. It also plays an important role in limiting di-nitrogen (N(2)) fixation rates, and thus is important in controlling ocean inventories of fixed nitrogen. Because of these effects, iron is thought to play a key role in regulating biological cycles of carbon and nitrogen in the ocean, including the biological transfer of carbon to the deep sea, the so-called biological CO(2) pump, which helps regulate atmospheric CO(2) and CO(2)-linked global warming. Other trace metal nutrients (zinc, cobalt, copper, and manganese) have lesser effects on productivity; but may exert an important influence on the species composition of algal communities because of large differences in metal requirements among species. The interactions between trace metals and ocean plankton are reciprocal: not only do the metals control the plankton, but the plankton regulate the distributions, chemical speciation, and cycling of these metals through cellular uptake and recycling processes, downward flux of biogenic particles, biological release of organic chelators, and mediation of redox reactions. This two way interaction has influenced not only the biology and chemistry of the modern ocean, but has had a profound influence on biogeochemistry of the ocean and earth system as a whole, and on the evolution of marine and terrestrial biology over geologic history.

Abstract:The submicrometric fraction of surface sediments that accumulate in the bottom of dam reservoirs represent important sources of nutrients and contaminants in freshwater systems. However, assessing their stability in the presence of sediment bacteria as well as their bioavailability in the sediment remains poorly understood. We hypothesized that sediment's bacteria are able to extract nutrients from sedimentary colloids (<1 μm fraction) and thus contribute to the release of other colloid-associated elements to water. Experiments were performed under laboratory conditions, using the submicrometric fractions of sediments recovered from two dam reservoirs (in calcareous and crystalline granitic contexts) and two heterotrophic bacteria (Gram-negative Pseudomonas sp. and Gram-positive Mycolicibacterium sp.). The results demonstrated that bacteria were able to maintain their metabolic activity (the acidification of the growth medium and the production of organic ligands) in the presence of colloids as the sole source of iron (Fe) and regardless of their chemical composition. This demonstrates that bioavailable Fe, aside from ionic forms, can also occur in colloidal forms. However, the bacteria also catalyzed the release of potentially toxic metallic elements (such as Pb) associated with colloids. These results help improve our understanding of the processes that influence contaminants' mobility in the ecosystems as well as provide an important insight into current research evaluating the bioavailability of different forms of nutrients.

Abstract:The trace metal iron (Fe) is an essential micronutrient that controls phytoplankton productivity, which subsequently affects organic matter cycling with feedback on the cycling of macronutrients. Along the continental margin of the US West Coast, high benthic Fe release has been documented, in particular from deep anoxic basins in the Southern California Borderland. However, the influence of this Fe release on surface primary production remains poorly understood. In the present study from the Santa Barbara Basin, in situ benthic Fe fluxes were determined along a transect from shallow to deep sites in the basin. Fluxes ranged between 0.23 and 4.9 mmol m −2 d −1 , representing some of the highest benthic Fe fluxes reported to date. To investigate the influence of benthic Fe release from the oxygen-deficient deep basin on surface phytoplankton production, we combined benthic flux measurements with numerical simulations using the Regional Ocean Modeling System coupled to the Biogeochemical Elemental Cycling (ROMS-BEC) model. For this purpose, we updated the model Fe flux parameterization to include the new benthic flux measurements from the Santa Barbara Basin. Our simulations suggest that benthic Fe fluxes enhance surface primary production, supporting a positive feedback on benthic Fe release by decreasing oxygen in bottom waters. However, a reduction in phytoplankton Fe limitation by enhanced benthic fluxes near the coast may be partially compensated for by increased nitrogen limitation further offshore, limiting the efficacy of this positive feedback.

Abstract:The eutrophication of aquatic systems is a problem related to the contribution of excess nutrients—phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N)—to water bodies, which produces an increase in cyanobacterial blooms. Under eutrophic conditions, P and N concentrations are sufficient for cyanobacteria growth, and some micronutrients are considered to become limiting for population growth. This work aimed to assess the effect of iron on cyanobacteria growth and the content of MCs in natural populations of Microcystis spp. Microcosm setting experiments were carried out with natural samples collected during two bloom events of Microcystis spp., kept under controlled light, temperature and pH conditions. The first bloom sample was exposed to different iron concentrations (400, 700 and 1100 μg Fe·L−1) to determine the optimum concentration for growth. The second was exposed to different iron addition modes (one: T1P, and two pulses: T2P) to imitate the iron increase produced by the downward migration of Microcystis spp. colonies. Our results show that iron is a growth-promoting factor and that its optimal range of concentrations for the growth of Microcystis spp. under the experimental setting conditions is between 700 and 1100 μg Fe·L−1. On the other hand, growth rates were not significantly different between T1P and T2P; thus, different addition modes did not have an effect on growth. Regarding microcystin content, the MC quota in natural populations of Microcystis spp. did not show a clear relationship with the iron supply. This work contributes to the understanding of the underlying factors affecting cyanobacteria bloom formation and the production of MCs, which in turn would impact the development of management strategies to control cyanobacteria blooms.

Abstract:Cyanobacteria-dominated harmful algal blooms are increasing in occurrence. Many of the taxa contributing to these blooms are capable of fixing atmospheric nitrogen and should be favored under conditions of low nitrogen availability. Yet, synthesizing nitrogenase, the enzyme responsible for nitrogen fixation, is energetically expensive and requires substantial concentrations of iron. Phosphorus addition to nitrogen poor streams should promote nitrogen fixation, but experimental results so far have been inconclusive, suggesting that other factors may be involved in controlling this process. With iron potentially limited in many streams, we examined the influence of phosphorus-iron colimitation on the community structure of nitrogen-fixing organisms. In stream microcosms, using microscopic and molecular sequence data, we observed: (i) the greatest abundance of heterocyst forming nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria in low nitrogen treatments with high phosphorus and iron and (ii) greater abundance of non-photosynthetic nitrogen-fixing bacteria in treatments with nitrogen compared to those without it. We also found that comparisons between molecular results and those obtained from microscopic identification provided complementary information about cyanobacterial communities. Our investigation indicates the potential for phosphorus-iron colimitation of stream nitrogen-fixing organisms.
