Abstract:A growing body of literature recognizes that pairwise species interactions are not necessarily an appropriate metaphorical molecule of community ecology. Two examples are intransitive competition and nonlinear higher-order effects. While these two processes have been discussed extensively, the explicit analysis of how the two of them behave when simultaneously part of the same dynamic system has not yet been explored theoretically. A concrete situation exists on coffee farms in Puerto Rico in which three ant species form an intransitive competitive triplet, and that triplet is strongly influenced, nonlinearly, by a fly parasitoid that modifies the competitive ability of one of the species. Using this arrangement as a template, we explore the dynamical consequences with a simple ordinary differential equation (ODE) model. Results are complicated and include alternative periodic and chaotic attractors. The qualitative structures of those complications, however, may be approximately retrieved from the basic natural history of the system.

Abstract:Historically, musings about the structure of ecological communities has revolved around the structure of pairwise interactions, competition, predation, mutualism, etc. . . Recently a growing literature acknowledges that the baseline assumption that the pair of species is not necessarily the metaphorical molecule of community ecology, and that certain structures containing three or more species may not be usefully divisible into pairwise components. Two examples are intransitive competition (species A dominates species B dominates species C dominates species A), and nonlinear higher-order effects. An aggressive nonconsumptive effect mediates pest control and multipredator interactions in a coffee agroecosystem

Abstract:Natural pest control is an alternative to pesticide use in agriculture, and may help to curb insect declines and promote crop production. Nonconsumptive interactions in natural pest control that historically have received far less attention than consumptive interactions, may have distinct impacts on pest damage suppression and may also mediate positive multipredator interactions. Additionally, when nonconsumptive effects are driven by natural enemy aggression, variation in alternative resources for enemies may impact the strength of pest control. Here we study control of the coffee berry borer (CBB), Hypothenemus hampei, by a keystone arboreal ant species, Azteca sericeasur, which exhibits a nonconsumptive effect on CBB by throwing them off coffee plants. We conducted two experiments to investigate: (1) if the strength of this behavior is driven by spatial or temporal variability in scale insect density (an alternative resource that Azteca tends for honeydew), (2) if this behavior mediates positive interactions between Azteca and other ground-foraging ants, and (3) the effect this behavior has on the overall suppression of CBB damage in multipredator scenarios. Our behavioral experiment showed that nearly all interactions between Azteca and CBB are nonconsumptive and that this behavior occurs more frequently in the dry season and with higher densities of scale insects on coffee branches. Our multipredator experiment revealed that borers thrown off coffee plants by Azteca can survive and potentially damage other nearby plants but may be suppressed by ground-foraging ants. Although we found no non-additive effects between Azteca and ground-foraging ants on overall CBB damage, together, both species resulted in the lowest level of plant damage with the subsequent reduction in "spillover" damage caused by thrown CBB, indicating spatial complementarity between predators. These results present a unique case of natural pest control, in which damage suppression is driven almost exclusively by nonconsumptive natural enemy aggression, as opposed to consumption or prey behavioral changes. Furthermore, our results demonstrate the variability that may occur in nonconsumptive pest control interactions when natural enemy aggressive behavior is impacted by alternative resources, and also show how these nonconsumptive effects can mediate positive interactions between natural enemies to enhance overall crop damage reduction.

Abstract:Plant-pollinator associations are often seen as purely mutualistic, while in reality they can be more complex. Indeed they may also display a diverse array of antagonistic interactions, such as competition and victim--exploiter interactions. In some cases mutualistic and antagonistic interactions are carried-out by the same species but at different life-stages. As a consequence, population structure affects the balance of inter-specific associations, a topic that is receiving increased attention. In this paper, we developed a model that captures the basic features of the interaction between a flowering plant and an insect with a larval stage that feeds on the plant's vegetative tissues (e.g. leaves) and an adult pollinator stage. Our model is able to display a rich set of dynamics, the most remarkable of which involves victim--exploiter oscillations that allow plants to attain abundances above their carrying capacities, and the periodic alternation between states dominated by mutualism or antagonism. Our study indicates that changes in the insect's life cycle can modify the balance between mutualism and antagonism, causing important qualitative changes in the interaction dynamics. These changes in the life cycle could be caused by a variety of external drivers, such as temperature, plant nutrients, pesticides and changes in the diet of adult pollinators. Agro-ecological control of a pest-host system: optimizing the harvest

Abstract:We delve into the interactions between a prey-predator and a vector-borne epidemic system, driven by agro-ecological motivations. This system involves an ODE, two reaction--diffusion PDEs and one reaction--diffusion--advection PDE. It has no complete variational or monotonic structure and features spatially heterogeneous coefficients. Our initial focus is to examine the continuity of a quantity known as ''harvest'', which depends on the time-integral of infected vectors. We analyze its asymptotic behaviour as the domain becomes homogeneous. Then we tackle a non-standard optimal control problem related to the linearized harvest and conduct an analysis to establish the existence, uniqueness, and properties of optimizers. Finally, we refine the location of optimizers under specific initial conditions.

Abstract:When confronted with the imminent threat of predation, the prey instinctively employ strategies to avoid being consumed. These anti-predator tactics involve individuals acting collectively to intimidate predators and reduce potential harm during an attack. In the present work, we propose a state-dependent feedback control predator-prey model that incorporates a nonmonotonic functional response, taking into account the anti-predator behavior observed in pest-natural enemy ecosystems within the agricultural context. The qualitative analysis of this model is presented utilizing the principles of impulsive semi-dynamical systems. Firstly, the stability conditions of the equilibria are derived by employing pertinent properties of planar systems. The precise domain of the impulsive set and phase set is determined by considering the phase portrait of the system. Secondly, a Poincaré map is constructed by utilizing the sequence of impulsive points within the phase set. The stability of the order-1 periodic solution at the boundary is subsequently analyzed by an analog of the Poincaré criterion. Additionally, this article presents various threshold conditions that determine both the existence and stability of an order-1 periodic solution. Furthermore, it investigates the existence of order-k (k≥2) periodic solutions. Finally, the article explores the complex dynamics of the model, encompassing multiple bifurcation phenomena and chaos, through computational simulations.

Novel Dynamics in an Additional Food provided Predator-Prey System with mutual interference

Abstract:The provision of additional food (AF) sources to an introduced predator has been identified as a mechanism to improve pest control. However, AF models with prey dependent functional responses can cause unbounded growth of the predator \cite{S27}. To avoid such dynamics, an AF model with mutual interference effect has been proposed \cite{S02}. The analysis therein reveals that if the quantity of additional food $\xi > h(\epsilon)$, where $\epsilon$ is the mutual interference parameter, then pest eradication is possible, and this is facilitated via a transcritical bifurcation. We revisit this model and show novel dynamical behaviors. In particular, pest eradication is possible for a tighter range of AF $g(\epsilon) < \xi < f(\epsilon) < h(\epsilon)$, and can also occur via a saddle node bifurcation. We observe bi-stability, as well as local bifurcations of Hopf type. We also prove a global bifurcation, of homoclinic type. This bifurcation in turn is shown to create a non-standard dynamic wherein the pest extinction state becomes an ``almost" global attractor. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first proof of existence of such a dynamical structure in AF models. We discuss our analysis in the context of designing novel bio-control strategies.

Abstract:<p>In this work, we construct simple models in terms of differential equations for the dynamics of pest populations and their management using biological pest control. For the first model used, the effect of the biological control is modelled by a function of repeated infinite impulses. And, our second model uses a periodic function proportional to the population to model the effect of biological control. In both cases, we present analytical solutions and derive a discrete version of them. Moreover, convergence conditions are given for periodic solutions. Finally, an application of such models is described for diamondback moth in a plot of broccoli to be controlled by the application of biological pesticides and beneficial parasitoids.</p>

Abstract:Ecosystem services mediated by biodiversity are essential for the well-being of human beings. While there is ample research on individual ecosystem services (such as pollination, nutrient cycling), there is now growing recognition to examine the interactions between multiple ecosystem services and their contribution to productivity in order to manage agroecosystems sustainably. In this study, we examined the interactions between pollination and pest control in coffee agroecosystems in Chiapas, Mexico. We tested how management of shade trees, particularly of nitrogen-fixing shade trees, at the farm scale mediated the outcome of the interactions between two ES. We found that there was no trade-off between pest control and pollination services despite the deterrence of pollinators by the dominant and aggressive ant species, , which also controls the coffee berry borer, a major pest of . We found additive effects of pest-control and pollination on early fruit set and fruit weight of coffee plants. Proximity to nitrogen-fixing shade trees had indirect effects on pest-control via the reduction of activity on the coffee bushes. These findings highlight that ecosystem services are a result of complex interspecific interactions and that biodiversity-friendly management practices can promote favorable outcomes of these interactions on coffee yield.

Social-ecological cascade effects of land use on vertebrate pest dynamics in arid agricultural communities

Abstract:Extensive land conversion to agriculture in drylands and associated resource use have wide-ranging impacts on desert ecosystems globally. Incorporating the impacts of human-social aspects is thus imperative in examining ecological interactions. The provision of agricultural inputs in these resource-scarce regions supports invasive and pest species, negatively impacting both agricultural productivity and native desert ecosystems. Understanding the spatial dynamics of invasive and pest species requires analyzing both bottom-up resource availability factors underlying animal distributions and top-down biological controls. Here, we evaluate the social-ecological cascading effects of dryland agriculture on vertebrate pest communities in dryland agricultural communities of Israel. Our study region is characterized by 18 agricultural cooperatives with distinct crop regimes due to contrasting social decision-making and resource allocation schemes (i.e., communal kibbutzim vs. privatized moshavim). Crop choices further affect land management (e.g., enclosed vs. open farm systems) and resource intensity. This system is ideal for studying trophic mechanisms underlying animal assemblages between agricultural regimes. We examine the role of agricultural land-use practices on pest spatial distributions based on multiyear vertebrate pest observations with agricultural data sets. We use structural equation modeling (SEM) to quantify the relative importance of added agricultural resources underlying bottom-up and top-down trophic processes regulating vertebrate pest assemblages. Results reveal that crop choices determine pest distributions through bottom-up processes directly, while simultaneously driving pest competitive interactions through indirect top-down cascades impacting pest communities. For example, due to the indirect negative effect of wolves on mesopredators (foxes and jackals) mediated by livestock, the total positive effect of livestock on the abundance of mesopredators is reduced. Our study illustrates the social-ecological cascading effects of agricultural regimes on pest community assemblages mediated by contrasting agricultural land-use practices. Considering the expansion of dryland agroecological systems globally, understanding the intricate cascading pathways of predator- and prey-pest communities has important implications for agricultural management, biological invasions in drylands, and fragile desert environments.

Abstract:Agroforestry is a land-use system based on the simultaneous cultivation of crops and trees. The abundance and diversity of species living in agroforestry is usually higher than in monoculture. Hence, agroforestry may naturally control agricultural pests, by conserving their natural enemies. In monoculture, pest control requires the application of synthetic pesticides, which can cause harmful effects. In agroforestry, however, crops and trees compete for resources, which may reduce the crop production, as compared to monoculture. Here, a mathematical model is proposed to analyze this scenario. The model is written as a set of three nonlinear differential equations, in which the variables are the densities of crops, pests, and trees. It is analytically shown that transcritical and Hopf bifurcations can occur. Thus, by varying the parameter values, the pest can either be eradicated or endemically persist at constant level or endemically persist in oscillatory regime. For the Hopf bifurcation, the first Lyapunov exponent is computed. The analytical results are illustrated by computer simulations and discussed from an agroecological perspective.

Abstract:The insect predator–prey system mediates several feedback mechanisms which regulate species abundance and spatial distribution. However, the spatiotemporal dynamics of such discrete systems with the refuge effect remain elusive. In this study, we analyzed a discrete Holling type II model incorporating the refuge effect using theoretical calculations and numerical simulations, and selected moths with high and low growth rates as two exemplifications. The result indicates that only the flip bifurcation opens the routes to chaos, and the system undergoes four spatiotemporally behavioral patterns (from the frozen random pattern to the defect chaotic diffusion pattern, then the competition intermittency pattern, and finally to the fully developed turbulence pattern). Furthermore, as the refuge effect increases, moths with relatively slower growth rates tend to maintain stability at relatively low densities, whereas moths with relatively faster growth rates can induce chaos and unpredictability on the population. According to the theoretical guidance of this study, the refuge effect can be adjusted to control pest populations effectively, which provides a new theoretical perspective and is a feasible tool for protecting crops.

Abstract:In this paper, an impulsive model is discussed for an integrated pest management approach comprising of chemical and mechanical controls. The pesticides and harvesting are used to control the stage-structured pest population. The mature pest give birth to immature pest in pulses at regular intervals. The pest is controlled by spraying chemical pesticides affecting immature as well as mature pest. The harvesting of both immature and mature pest further reduce the pest population. The discrete dynamical system obtained from stroboscopic map is analyzed. The threshold conditions for stability of pest-free state as well as non-trivial period-1 solution is obtained. The effect of pesticide spray timing and harvesting on immature as well as mature pest are shown. Finally, by numerical simulation with MATLAB, the dynamical behaviors of the model is found to be complex. Above the threshold level there is a characteristic sequence of bifurcations leading to chaotic dynamics. Route to chaos is found to be period-doubling. Period halving bifurcations are also observed.

Abstract:How do landscape fragmentation affects ecosystems diversity and stability is an important and complex question in ecology with no simple answer, as spatially separated habitats where species live are highly dynamic rather than just static. Taking into account the species dispersal among nearby connected habitats (or patches) through a common dynamic environment, we model the consumer-resource interactions with ring type coupled network. Characterizing the dynamics of consumer-resource interactions in a coupled ecological system with three fundamental mechanisms: such as the interaction within the patch, the interaction between the patch and the interaction through a common dynamic environment, we report the occurrence of various atypical collective behaviors. We show that, the interplay between dynamic environment and dispersal among connected patches exhibits the mechanism of generation of oscillations, i.e., rhythmogenesis, as well as suppression of oscillations, i.e., amplitude death and oscillation death. Also, the transition of homogeneous steady state to inhomogeneous steady state occurs through a co-dimension-2 bifurcation. Emphasizing a network of spatially extended system, the coupled model exposes the collective behavior of synchrony-stability relationship with various synchronization occurrences such as in-phase and out-of-phase.

Abstract:Abstract An expectation for optimal integrated pest management is that the instantaneous numbers of natural enemies released should depend on the densities of both pest and natural enemy in the field. For this, a generalised predator–prey model with nonlinear impulsive control tactics is proposed and its dynamics is investigated. The threshold conditions for the global stability of the pest-free periodic solution are obtained based on the Floquet theorem and analytic methods. Also, the sufficient conditions for permanence are given. Additionally, the problem of finding a nontrivial periodic solution is confirmed by showing the existence of a nontrivial fixed point of the model’s stroboscopic map determined by a time snapshot equal to the common impulsive period. In order to address the effects of nonlinear pulse control on the dynamics and success of pest control, a predator–prey model incorporating the Holling type II functional response function as an example is investigated. Finally, numerical simulations show that the proposed model has very complex dynamical behaviour, including period-doubling bifurcation, chaotic solutions, chaos crisis, period-halving bifurcations and periodic windows. Moreover, there exists an interesting phenomenon whereby period-doubling bifurcation and period-halving bifurcation always coexist when nonlinear impulsive controls are adopted, which makes the dynamical behaviour of the model more complicated, resulting in difficulties when designing successful pest control strategies.

Abstract:Biological control using natural enemies with additional food resources is one of the most adopted and ecofriendly pest control techniques. Moreover, additional food is also provided to natural enemies to divert them from cannibalism. In the present work, using the theory of dynamical system, we discuss the dynamics of a cannibalistic predator prey model in the presence of different harvesting schemes in prey (pest) population and provision of additional food to predators (natural enemies). A detailed mathematical analysis and numerical evaluations have been presented to discuss the pest free state, coexistence of species, stability, occurrence of different bifurcations (saddle-node, transcritical, Hopf, Bogdanov-Takens) and the impact of additional food and harvesting schemes on the dynamics of the system. It has been obtained that the multiple coexisting equilibria and their stability depend on the additional food (quality and quantity) and harvesting rates. Interestingly, we also observe that the pest population density decreases immediately even when small amount of harvesting is implemented. Also the eradication of pest population (stable pest free state) could be achieved via variation in the additional food and implemented harvesting schemes. The individual effects of harvesting parameters on the pest density suggest that the linear harvesting scheme is more effective to control the pest population rather than constant and nonlinear harvesting schemes. In the context of biological control programs, the present theoretical work suggests different threshold values of implemented harvesting and appropriate choices of additional food to be supplied for pest eradication.

Abstract:One of the most important agricultural activities worldwide, coffee cultivation, is severely affected by the Coffee Berry Borer (CBB), Hypothenemus hampei, considered the primary coffee pest. The CBB is a tiny beetle that diminishes the quantity and quality of coffee beans by penetrating them to feed on the endosperm and deposit its eggs, continuing its life cycle. One strategy to combat CBBs is using biological control agents, such as certain species of ants. Here, a mathematical model (consisting of a system of nonlinear ordinary differential equations) is formulated to describe the prey–predator interaction between CBBs and an unspecified species of ants. From this mathematical perspective, the model allows us to determine conditions for the existence and stability of extinction, persistence or co-existence equilibria. Transitions among those equilibrium states are investigated through the maximum per capita consumption rate of the predator as a bifurcation parameter, allowing us to determine the existence of transcritical and saddle-node bifurcations. Phase portraits of the system are presented for different values of bifurcation parameter, to illustrate stability outcomes and the occurrence of bifurcations. It is concluded that an increase in bifurcation parameters significantly reduces the CBB population, suggesting that ant predation is an effective control strategy, at least theoretically.

Abstract:Discrete-time models are the traditional approach for capturing population dynamics of a host-parasitoid system. Recent work has introduced a semi-discrete framework for obtaining model update functions that connect host-parasitoid population levels from year-to-year. In particular, this framework uses differential equations to describe the hosts-parasitoid interaction during the time of year where they come in contact, allowing specific behaviors to be mechanistically incorporated into the model. We use the semi-discrete approach to study the effects of host-feeding, which occurs when a parasitoid consumes a potential host larva without ovipositing. Our results show that host-feeding by itself cannot stabilize the system, and both the host and parasitoid populations exhibit diverging oscillations similar to the Nicholson-Bailey model. However, when combined with other stabilizing mechanisms such as density-dependent host mortality or density-dependent parasitoid attack rate, host-feeding expands the region of parameter space that allows for a stable host-parasitoid equilibrium. Finally, our results show that host-feeding causes inefficiency in the parasitoid population, which yields a higher population of hosts per generation. This suggests that host-feeding may have limited long-term impact in terms of suppressing host levels for biological control applications.

The Effects of Partial Crop Harvest on Biological Pest Control

Abstract:In this paper, the effects of periodic partial harvesting of a continuously grown crop on augmentative biological control are analyzed. Partial harvesting can remove a proportion of both pests and biological control agents, so its influence on the control efficiency cannot be a priori neglected. An impulsive model consisting of a general predator-prey model in ODE, augmented by a discrete component to depict releases of biological control agents and the periodic partial harvesting is used. The periods are taken as integer multiples of each other. A stability condition for pest eradication is expressed as the minimal value of the budget per unit time to spend on predators. We consider the partial harvesting period to be fixed by both the plant's physiology and market forces so that the only manipulated variable is the release period. Dynamical behaviors of autonomous and nonautonomous models of generalist predator–prey system with fear, mutual interference and nonlinear harvesting

Abstract:In this study, we explore a predator–prey model to evaluate the impacts of fear, mutual interference, and harvesting, as these factors play crucial roles in modifying population dynamics, trophic cascades, and species interactions. Additionally, we enhance the model to incorporate the seasonality of specific ecological factors across time. The autonomous and associated nonautonomous models have undergone thorough mathematical analysis and extensive numerical simulations in the course of the study. We conduct a fundamental differential sensitivity analysis to discern the key parameters influencing both prey and predator populations within the ecosystem. Through numerical investigations of the autonomous model, we notice that in the presence (absence) of harvesting, the mutual interference among predators destabilizes (stabilizes) the coexisting equilibrium. The fear effect significantly reduces the densities of prey and predator populations, and destabilizes the coexisting equilibrium by producing multiple stability switches. The survival of predators substantially depends on the focal prey if their growth from other food sources is relatively low. Notably, the harvesting of predators is beneficial and promotes the coexistence of species only when their growth from other food sources is too much. Moreover, the system shows bistability, tristability, and multiple limit cycles under identical ecological conditions. We also show various phenomena that manifest within the seasonally forced model, including the emergence of periodic solutions, higher periodic solutions, bursting patterns, and chaotic dynamics. Remarkably, the influence of seasonal forcing possesses the capability to govern the chaotic dynamics by giving rise to an exceedingly quasi-periodic arrangement in the prey and predator densities.
