Abstract:South Africa's decentralized approach to conservation entails that wildlife outside formally protected areas inhabit complex multi-use landscapes, where private wildlife business (ecotourism and/or hunting) co-exist in a human-dominated landscape matrix. Under decentralized conservation, wildlife is perceived to benefit from increased amount of available habitat, however it is crucial to understand how distinct management priorities and associated landscape modifications impact noncharismatic taxa, such as small mammals. We conducted extensive ink-tracking-tunnel surveys to estimate heterogeneity in rodent distribution and investigate the effect of different environmental factors on abundance patterns of two size-based rodent groups (small- and medium-sized species), across three adjacent management contexts in NE KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa: a private ecotourism game reserve, mixed farms and traditional communal areas (consisting of small clusters of houses interspersed with grazing areas and seminatural vegetation). Our hypotheses were formulated regarding the (1) area typology, (2) vegetation structure, (3) ungulate pressure and (4) human disturbance. Using a boosted-regression-tree approach, we found considerable differences between rodent groups' abundance and distribution, and the underlying environmental factors. The mean relative abundance of medium-sized species did not differ across the three management contexts, but small species mean relative abundance was higher in the game reserves, confirming an influence of the area typology on their abundance. Variation in rodent relative abundance was negatively correlated with human disturbance and ungulate presence. Rodent abundance seems to be influenced by environmental gradients that are directly linked to varying management priorities across land uses, meaning that these communities might not benefit uniformly by the increased amount of habitat promoted by the commercial wildlife industry.

Abstract:Understanding host population dynamics in connection to disease persistence is important for determining the epizootic risks present in plague foci. We used a capture-mark-recapture method to investigate the population dynamics of Mastomys natalensis and Lophuromys makundii in an active plague focus, in Mbulu District, Tanzania. We hypothesized higher abundance in plague-persistent locality and between habits and seasons. We found distinct patterns of abundance in M. natalensis between farm and forest habitats. The abundance was significantly higher in farms in plague persistent than non-plague persistent areas. The dry season showed a significant increase of abundance compared to the long rain season and the short rain season. A significant increase in breeding females was observed in farms in plague persistent than non-plague persistent localities while farms showed a significant decrease compared to forests. Dry season was associated with an increase in breeding females compared to the long rain season and the short rain season. Furthermore, the abundance of L. makundii showed a significant increase in forest in plague persistent than non-plague persistent localities. The abundance increased significantly during the dry season and long rain season compared to the short rain season. The proportion of breeding females was significantly higher in forests in plague persistent than non-plague persistent localities. The breeding females significantly increased during the dry and the short rain season than the long rain season. These findings contribute to our understanding of the ecological factors shaping the population dynamics of these species and their potential roles in plague persistence.

Abstract:Abstract Background Rodents are mammals of the order Rodentia, which are found in all continents except Antarctica. They are the most diverse groups of mammals representing 41% of all mammals and they are known with 33 families, 481 genera, and about 2277 species. The present study was conducted from December 2018 to August 2019 both during the dry and wet seasons using Sherman traps and live traps. Four trap sites namely forest, bushland, grassland, and sugarcane plantation were selected for data collection. Shannon-Wiener diversity index (H’) was used to compute rodent species diversity, Simpson’s index (D) to assess the number and abundance of rodents in the different habitats, and one-way ANOVA and independent samples t-test were used for data analysis. Results A total of 163 individual rodents were captured in 1776 trap nights of which 125 individuals were captured using live traps in 1176 trap nights and 38 individuals using snap traps in 600 trap nights. Among the total individual rodents captured in the Bahir Dar Blue Nile River Millennium Park, 63.8% ( n = 104) were males and 36.2% ( n = 59) were females. Males outnumbered females in all the grids and the difference was significant (t = 31.5, df = 10, p < 0.05). The relative abundance of rodent species indicated that 42.4% ( n = 53) were Arvicanthis niloticus , 26.4% ( n = 33) Rattus rattus , 17.6% (n = 22) Mus musculus , 8% ( n = 10) Mastomys natalensis , and 5.6% ( n = 7) Arvicanthis abyssinicus . There are more individual specimens of A. niloticus than other species identified in the area (F = 698.22, df = 4, p < 0.05). Distribution of rodents varied among the different habitats. As a result, the bushland habitat showed more diversity of rodents (H = 0.98) and comprised relatively the highest (51.2%, n = 64) number of individuals captured, while the forest habitat supported the lowest number of rodents (4%, n = 5), and the difference showed a significant difference (F = 873.37, df = 3, p < 0.05). Population density with 95% confident interval estimated as 166 individuals/ha (95% CI:164.43–167.57). Conclusion The present study provides basic information about population dynamics of rodents and contributes to design conservation strategies for rodents in particular and other biota of the area in general.

Abstract:Small mammals show prominent spatial and temporal fluctuations. A study was conducted to assess the spatiotemporal dynamics of small mammals in Wenchi highlands, central Ethiopia. Sherman and snap traps were used to capture small mammals from four forests (Qibate, Lakeshore, Erica and Albesa), Hagenia woodland and Erica scrub in two dry and wet seasons between August 2019 and January 2021. A total of 959 small mammals represented by 12 rodent species (Arvicanthis abyssinicus, Desmomys yaldeni, Mastomys natalensis, M. awashensis, Stenocephaylemys albipes, Lophuromys flavopunctatus, L. brevicaudus, L. chrysopus, Dendromus lovati, Lophiomys imhausi, Graphirius murinus and an unidentified murid rodent), and 3 shrew species (Crocidura bailey, C. fumosa and C. olivieri) were recorded. Small mammals showed spatiotemporal variations. More individuals were trapped during the dry (58.29%) than the wet (41.71%) season. Lakeshore Forest yielded the highest number of small mammals, whereas Erica Forest contributed the least during both seasons. More small mammal individuals were trapped in the second (52.24%) than the first (47.75%) trapping year. Small mammals also showed significant variations between the trapping periods (P 0.05). The density of small mammals varied between seasons and habitats. Small mammals had higher density during the dry (83.33 ha-1) than the wet (59.35 ha-1) season. In conclusion, Wenchi highlands supported a diverse small mammal community that displayed spatiotemporal changes. As a result, priority should be given to conserve the area.

Abstract:Abstract A survey on the diversity, abundance, and habitat association of small mammals in Wenchi Highland, central Ethiopia, was carried out from August 2019 to January 2021. Small mammals were trapped at six different habitats (Hagenia Woodland, Erica Scrub, Qibate, Lakeshore, Erica, and Albesa Forests) using Sherman and snap traps in standard trapping grids. A total of 937 rodents belonging to 12 species ( Arvicanthis abyssinicus, Desmomys yaldeni, Mastomys natalensis, M. awashensis, Stenocephaylemys albipes, Lophuromys flavopunctatus, L. brevicaudus, L. chrysopus, Dendromus lovati, Lophiomys imhausi, Graphirius murinus , and an unidentified murid rodent), and 22 insectivores belonging to 3 species ( Crocidura bailey, C. fumosa and C. olivieri ) were recorded. Hystrix cristata and Tachyoryctes splendens were also recorded through indirect evidence. About 52.9% of the identified small mammals were endemic to Ethiopia. A significant variation was observed in the captures of small mammals. The capture rate was higher in live traps (23.85%) than in snap traps (8.26%). The diversity and composition of small mammal species varied among habitats. The highest species diversity (H’=1.656) was recorded in Albesa Forest, while the lowest was in Erica Scrub (H’=1.409) and Qibate Forest (H’=1.407). However, after controlling for sampling effects, species diversity was the highest in the Erica Scrub (Fisher’s alpha=2.128) and the lowest in the Lakeshore Forests (Fisher’s alpha=1.318). The highest number of individuals was recorded in Lakeshore Forest (27.73%), whereas the lowest was in Erica Forest (3.96%). Mastomys natalensis (30.86%) and S. albipes (27.82%) were the two most abundant species, whereas L. imhausi (0.1%) was the least abundant one. Wenchi montane forests are essential homes for unique small mammals that need urgent conservation actions.

Abstract:Ranging dynamics are physical and behavioral representations of how different socioecological factors affect an organism's spatial decisions and space use strategies. Western lowland gorillas (Gorilla gorilla gorilla) are a model species to investigate the drivers of spatial dynamics based on both the natural variation in socioecological factors within the species and compared with their mountain gorilla counterparts. In this study, we evaluate the influences of resource seasonality and social dynamics on variation in home range size, utilization, and intergroup overlap among multiple gorilla groups over an 8-year study period in the northern Republic of Congo. This study shows that western lowland gorillas can have small home ranges comparable to mountain gorillas, rather than universally larger home ranges as previously supposed, and that home ranges are stable through time. The largest source of variation in space use was the degree of intergroup home range overlap. The study groups did not demonstrate intraspecific variation in range size nor changes in intergroup overlap with respect to seasonality of fruit resources, but all groups demonstrated expansion of monthly range and core area with group size, matching predictions of intragroup feeding competition. These findings highlight the potential impact of intergroup relationships on space use and prompt further research on the role of social dynamics in ranging strategies. In this study, we reveal a greater degree of variability and flexibility in gorilla ranging behavior than previously realized which is relevant to improving comparative studies and informing conservation strategies on behalf of these endangered primates.
Unravelling the dynamics: Large mammal occupancy modelling in a West African tropical forest

Abstract:This study investigates the response of large mammal populations to human‐induced modifications in the Omo‐Shasha‐Oluwa Forest Reserves landscape. The impact of habitat alterations on species diversity and distribution remains poorly understood in this region. Over four seasons from May 2017 to April 2019, 52 sites were surveyed, revealing the presence of 12 large mammal species across six families. Maxwell's duiker exhibited the highest overall occupancy (0.897 ± 0.062), while the Forest elephant had the lowest (0.115 ± 0.043). Forest buffalo experienced the greatest increase in site occupancy (0.290 ± 0.076 to 0.358 ± 0.098), whereas the Mona monkey saw the most significant decrease (0.713 to 0.651). The study employed single‐species, multi‐season occupancy modelling, predicting colonisation and extinction events solely for the civet (Υ = 0.347 ± 0.154; ε = 0.041 ± 0.031) and Red river hog (Υ = 0.158 ± 0.098; ε = 0.098 ± 0.059). The likelihood of Civet cat and Red river hog colonisation increased with distance from the nearest settlement. These findings enhance our understanding of habitat characteristics influencing large mammal distribution, offering valuable insights for the conservation of these species in forest landscapes. Résumé Cette étude porte sur la réaction des populations de grands mammifères aux modifications induites par l'homme dans le paysage des réserves forestières d'Omo‐Shasha‐Oluwa. L'impact des modifications de l'habitat sur la diversité et la répartition des espèces reste mal compris dans cette région. Sur quatre saisons, de mai 2017 à avril 2019, 52 sites ont été étudiés, révélant la présence de 12 espèces de grands mammifères réparties en six familles. Le céphalophe de Maxwell présentait l'occupation globale la plus élevée (0.897 ± 0.062), tandis que l'éléphant de forêt présentait la plus faible (0.115 ± 0.043). Le buffle de forêt a connu la plus forte augmentation de l'occupation du site (0.290 ± 0.076 à 0.358 ± 0.098), tandis que le singe Mona a connu la plus forte régression (0.713 à 0.651). L'étude a utilisé un modèle d'occupation monospécifique et plurisaisonnier, prévoyant des événements de colonisation et d'extinction uniquement pour la civette (Υ = 0.347 ± 0.154; ε = 0.041 ± 0.031) et le potamochère roux (Υ = 0.158 ± 0.098; ε = 0.098 ± 0.059). La probabilité de colonisation de la civette et du potamochère roux augmente avec la distance par rapport à l'établissement le plus proche. Comparative Phylogeography of Two Specialist Rodents in Forest Fragments in Kenya

Abstract:The fragmented forests of the Kenya highlands, known for their exceptional species richness and endemism, are among the world's most important biodiversity hotspots. However, detailed studies on the fauna of these ecosystems—especially specialist species that depend on moist forests, which are particularly threatened by habitat fragmentation—are still limited. In this study, we used mitochondrial genes (cytochrome b and the displacement loop) and a nuclear marker (retinol-binding protein 3) to investigate genetic and morphological diversity, phylogenetic associations, historical divergence, population dynamics, and phylogeographic patterns in two rodent species—the soft-furred mouse (Praomys jacksoni) and the African wood mouse (Hylomyscus endorobae)—across Kenya's forest landscapes. We found a complex genetic structure, with P. jacksoni exhibiting greater genetic diversity than H. endorobae. The Mt. Kenya P. jacksoni populations are significantly genetically different from those in southwestern forests (Mau Forest, Kakamega Forest, and Loita Hills). In contrast, H. endorobae presented no observable biogeographic structuring across its range. The genetic diversity and geographic structuring patterns highlighted selectively strong effects of forest fragmentation and differing species' ecological and evolutionary responses to these landscape changes. Our findings further underscore the need for expanded sampling across Kenya's highland forests to better understand species' changing diversity and distribution patterns in response to the impacts of human-mediated habitat changes. These insights are critical for informing conservation strategies to preserve biodiversity better in this globally important region.

Abstract:Habitat types are closely associated with altitude gradients in tropical rainforests and play an essential role in species assemblages where terrain heterogeneity is often used to understand effects of climate change on species distribution. The response of larger mammals to habitat variation along altitudes is largely unexplored in Borneo. This study has utilised camera traps to better understand the community structure of larger mammals in Gunung Pueh National Park. Gunung Pueh National Park (1550 m a.s.l.) contains two major habitat types, which include lowland forests ( 1100 m a.s.l.) forests. The spatio-temporal niches of mid-sized to large-bodied mammal species across these altitude gradients and habitats were assessed. Cameras located at 23 locations, along varying altitude gradients, resulted in 3109 trap nights. Using these cameras, the collected recordings have revealed a total of 22 mid-sized to large-bodied mammals, including 19 species recorded in lowland forest areas, and 18 species in the lower montane forest areas; 15 species were found in both habitats. Four species were exclusively detected in the lowland forest, namely Rusa unicolor, Viverra tangalunga, Presbytis chrysomelas, and Hystrix brachyura. Three species were detected only in the lower montane forest, namely Herpestes semitorquatus, Mustela nudipes, and Hemigalus hosei. In the lowland forest, Macaca nemestrina was recorded with the highest naïve occupancy (naïve ψ = 1.00), while Hemigalus derbyanus had the highest naïve occupancy (naïve ψ = 0.93) in the lower montane forest. The temporal diel activity patterns of selected species in the two habitats have shown relatively close similarities, with overlapping patterns ranging between 67–90%. The further conservation of a large area, which encompasses mountainous ranges, is recommended to facilitate the conservation efficacy of such Protected Areas and for supporting diverse, mid-sized to large-bodied mammals in Borneo.

Abstract:664 Background: Cumulative sensory neurotoxicity of l-OHP used in standard 1st-line FOLFOX / CapeOX +/- BV therapies in mCRC results in impairment of patient's quality of life (QoL) and discontinuation of the treatment. CONcePT trial revealed that intermittent l-OHP use in BV plus FOLFOX7 is safe, keeping efficacy comparing with BV plus FOLFOX7 in which l-OHP is administered until time to treatment failure. But it is unknown that intermittent l-OHP administration is also safe and effective in Japanese pts with mCRC Methods: This trial aims to enroll 65 of Japanese pts with mCRC. Either BV+FOLFOX or BV+CapeOX is selected by decision of physician in charge. In BV+FOLFOX arm, pts receive 6 cycles of BV plus mFOLFOX6 (5 mg/kg of BV, 85 mg/m2 of l-OHP, 200 mg/m2 of I-LV, 400 mg/m2 of 5-FU by rapid IV infusion on day1, and 2,400 mg/m2 of 5-FU 46 hr by continuous IV infusion as a 2 weeks course) and 6 cycles of BV plus sLV5FU2. In BV+CapeOX arm, pts recieve 4 cycles of BV plus CapeOX (7.5 mg/kg of BV, 120 mg/m2 of l-OHP and capecitabine 1,000mg/m2 twice daily, day1 to 14 as a 3weeks course) and 4 cycles of BV+capecitabine. The primary endpoint is progression free survival (PFS) and secondary endpoints are tumor response (RR), overall survival (OS), time to treatment failure (TTF) and frequency of neurotoxicity. RESULTS According the protocol, interim analysis about efficacy and safety was performed at the time the 13th pts was received the treatment for 7 months. Median progression free survival is 290+ days (95% CI 119 - 558 days) and PFS of 9 cases were more than 7 months, which is threshold value. No serious adverse effects were observed in 13 cases. The efficacy and safety evaluation committee recommended continuing the study and the current accrual is 47 cases. CONCLUSIONS This is the interim report of T-CORE0901 trial and the study remains open to accrual with projected enrollment completion in 2012.
Afromontane mosaic vegetation acts as a barrier between small mammals from two savannah biomes in northern Ethiopia

Abstract:Despite its biogeographical uniqueness, where two vast savanna regions are separated by the Afromontane mosaic vegetation, there is a significant lack of small mammal sampling in the Tigray region of Ethiopia. Leveraging all our available data on rodents and shrews in the region, we tested the hypothesis that the Afromontane mosaic vegetation in the highlands acts as a barrier to gene flow between taxa found in the Somali-Masai and Sudanian savanna in the southeast and western lowland parts of the region, respectively. Morphological and DNA sequence analysis confirmed the presence of 23 species of small rodents and shrews in the region. We recorded 18 of these species in the Afromontane mosaic vegetation, seven species in the Sudanian savanna, and four species in the Somali-Masai savanna. Notably, the fauna of the Sudanian savanna was strikingly different from that of the Somali-Masai savanna at both intraspecific and interspecific levels, suggesting the northern Ethiopian highlands as a very strong biogeographic barrier for taxa adapted to arid lowlands. However, the reported species diversity remains provisional, and additional sampling from unexplored areas is needed. Furthermore, some of the reported taxa, in this study, such as Mus cf. tenellus , Crocidura cf. fuscomurina , Dendromus sp. indet. 2, and Otomys cf. cheesmani , require detailed taxonomic investigation and may represent new species. A robust understanding of the taxonomic diversity and distribution of the small mammals in the region is crucial for effective conservation planning as well as for addressing practical questions related to rodents, such as in public health and pest management.

Abstract:This study documents the different management and control measures developed and implemented by farmers to mitigate vertebrate pest attacks on crops and livestock around Lake Mburo National Park in Uganda. A semi-structured interview administered to 40 randomly selected park neighbours was supplemented with key informant interviews, a review of secondary data, and direct observations of vertebrate pest problems and their management. All participant farmers had experienced some damage from vertebrate pests. Bushpigs ranked as the most destructive to crops, while leopards were most destructive to livestock. Most damage occurred during severe dry seasons. The most common methods for combating pests were guarding, fencing, and poisoning. Physical guarding was perceived as being the most effective method; however, there were reports of pest resurgence, which varied between pest species, seasons, and methods used. Bushpigs showed the greatest resistance against control measures. Control efforts were found to be tedious and time-consuming, and they created the possibility for the transfer of infectious diseases frompests to humans. We recommend conscious efforts to augment local control methods so as to enhance both biodiversity conservation and farm production.

Abstract:Abstract Assessment of medium- and large-sized mammals’ species diversity, abundance, distribution, and habitat association is necessary to promote their conservation measures. The study was conducted in the former Dhidhessa wildlife sanctuary (FDWS), to assess the medium- and large-sized mammals’ composition, distribution, and diversity. Transect lines were used to collect the data. A total of 1,146 ± 91 individuals belonging to 25 species, seven orders, and 14 families were recorded. Among these, 607 ± 186.5 (52.97%) were recorded during the wet season, whereas 539 ± 144.5 (47.03%) during the dry season. The order Carnivora was the most diverse one, followed by Artiodactyla and Primates, respectively, while Rodentia, Hyracoidea, Tubulidentata, and Lagomorpha were the least diverse orders. Olive baboon ( Papio anubis ) was the most abundant species (19.2%), followed by Hippopotamus ( Hippopotamus amphibious ) (17.63%) and Vervet monkey ( Chlorocebus aethiops ) (13.18%). Species diversity was higher in the savanna-wooded than in the riverine forest during both the wet (H’ = 2.72, Fisher’s alpha = 6.33) and dry (H’= 2.79, Fisher’s alpha = 6.26) seasons. Species evenness was higher in the savanna-wooded habitat than in the riverine forest habitat during both the wet (J’ = 0.87 and J’ = 0.77, respectively) and dry (J’ = 0.9 and J’ = 0.80, respectively) seasons. The highest similarity in species composition was between the wet and dry seasons in the riverine forest habitat (SI = 85.58%). The lowest similarity was recorded between the dry and wet seasons of the riverine forest and the wet season of the savanna wooded habitat (SI = 45.46% and SI = 46.49%, respectively). The study suggests that mammals are at risk of anthropogenic factors in the area. So, an urgent conservation measure that involves the participation of the local community has paramount significance for the sustainable conservation of mammals in the former Dhidhessa wildlife sanctuary.

Abstract:Medium-to-large mammals within tropical forests represent a rich and functionally diversified component of this biome; however, they continue to be threatened by hunting and habitat loss. Assessing these communities implies studying species' richness and composition, and determining a state variable of species abundance in order to infer changes in species distribution and habitat associations. The Tropical Ecology, Assessment and Monitoring (TEAM) network fills a chronic gap in standardized data collection by implementing a systematic monitoring framework of biodiversity, including mammal communities, across several sites. In this study, we used TEAM camera trap data collected in the Udzungwa Mountains of Tanzania, an area of exceptional importance for mammal diversity, to propose an example of a baseline assessment of species' occupancy. We used 60 camera trap locations and cumulated 1,818 camera days in 2009. Sampling yielded 10,647 images of 26 species of mammals. We estimated that a minimum of 32 species are in fact present, matching available knowledge from other sources. Estimated species richness at camera sites did not vary with a suite of habitat covariates derived from remote sensing, however the detection probability varied with functional guilds, with herbivores being more detectable than other guilds. Species-specific occupancy modelling revealed novel ecological knowledge for the 11 most detected species, highlighting patterns such as 'montane forest dwellers', e.g. the endemic Sanje mangabey (Cercocebus sanjei), and 'lowland forest dwellers', e.g. suni antelope (Neotragus moschatus). Our results show that the analysis of camera trap data with account for imperfect detection can provide a solid ecological assessment of mammal communities that can be systematically replicated across sites.

Abstract:Small mammal species play an important role influencing vegetation primary productivity and plant species composition, seed dispersal, soil structure, and as predator and/or prey species. Species which experience population dynamics cycles can, at high population phases, heavily impact agricultural sectors and promote rodent-borne disease transmission. To better understand the drivers behind small mammal distributions and abundances, and how these differ for individual species, it is necessary to characterise landscape variables important for the life cycles of the species in question. In this study, a suite of Earth observation derived metrics quantifying landscape characteristics and dynamics, and in-situ small mammal trapline and transect survey data, are used to generate random forest species distribution models for nine small mammal species for study sites in Narati, China and Sary Mogul, Kyrgyzstan. These species distribution models identify the important landscape proxy variables driving species abundance and distributions, in turn identifying the optimal conditions for each species. The observed relationships differed between species, with the number of landscape proxy variables identified as important for each species ranging from 3 for Microtus gregalis at Sary Mogul, to 26 for Ellobius tancrei at Narati. Results indicate that grasslands were predicted to hold higher abundances of Microtus obscurus, E. tancrei and Marmota baibacina, forest areas hold higher abundances of Myodes centralis and Sorex asper, with mixed forest-grassland boundary areas and areas close to watercourses predicted to hold higher abundances of Apodemus uralensis and Sicista tianshanica. Localised variability in vegetation and wetness conditions, as well as presence of certain habitat types, are also shown to influence these small mammal species abundances. Predictive application of the Random Forest (RF) models identified spatial hot-spots of high abundance, with model validation producing R2 values between 0.670 for M. gregalis transect data at Sary Mogul to 0.939 for E. tancrei transect data at Narati. This enhances previous work whereby optimal habitat was defined simply as presence of a given land cover type, and instead defines optimal habitat via a combination of important landscape dynamic variables, moving from a human-defined to species-defined perspective of optimal habitat. The species distribution models demonstrate differing distributions and abundances of host species across the study areas, utilising the strengths of Earth observation data to improve our understanding of landscape and ecological linkages to small mammal distributions and abundances.
Effects of Habitat Disturbance and Protected Areas on Mammals of Peninsular Malaysia

Abstract:I studied a network of small forested areas (2-2744 ha) that are protected as forestry research control sites and nature reserves in Peninsular Malaysia. These areas are officially known in Malaysia as Virgin Jungle Reserves ( VJRs). They are unlogged and are usually part of a larger, generally logged forest. I examined the effects of habitat disturbance on the species richness and composition of the mammal communities in seven of these protected areas ( 70-304 ha) and in adjoining logged forest, exotic monoculture plantation, or "farm bush." Thirty-eight species of mammals were recorded through direct observation, identification of tracks, or other signs. The size of the remaining area of natural forest, including both logged and unlogged forest but not including exotic timber plantations, or farm bush, was the most important factor affecting the mammal communities in all seven areas. The presence of species followed a nested subset pattern. A loss of large herbivores and carnivores, in particular, was apparent between areas of natural forest of 6551 to ≥10,000 ha. When areas of natural forest of ≤459 ha were considered, size continued to be critical; a sharp loss in mammal species richness was apparent between 70 and 164 ha. The area of the natural forest in which a protected area was located largely determined the mammal species richness and composition in the protected area. Differences in habitat quality accounted for the differences in mammal communities between protected areas and their adjoining vegetation. The preservation of small undisturbed areas can effectively enhance certain mammal communities in a disturbed landscape. The survival of some mammal species, however, including the largest carnivores and herbivores, will be determined by the area of surviving forest as a whole. A positive management strategy would be to retain large, continuous areas of forest wherever possible, in preference to fragmenting forest, and to build on existing small protected-area networks, such as the VJR network in Peninsular Malaysia, so that logged forests contain a rich mix of undisturbed protected areas.

Abstract:We analyzed the spatial niche breadth and spatial niche overlap among rodents in Tangjiahe Nature Reserve during summer, 2003. We defined 4 habitats according to the elevations and vegetation types: A. Evergreen-broadleaf forests (below (1 600 m)); B. Evergreen and deciduous broadleaf forests ((1 600)-2 000 m); C. Conifers and broadleaf mixed forests ((2 100)-(2 400 m)); D. Subalpine coniferous forests + subalpine bushes and meadows (2 400-3 600 m). The Hongshi River, Wenxian River, Shiqiao River, Xiaowan River and Caijiaba were selected to be the main investigated routes. A total of 204 rodents belonging to 12 species were captured in 5 120 trap-days. Apodemus chevrieri, A. draco and A. peninsulae were the most widely distributed in the reserve. We discussed the relationships between distribution and niche breadth, as well between competition and niche overlap among species.

Abstract:The conservation of endangered species can benefit from a clear understanding of the quantity and distribution of their main foods. The population of mountain gorillas (<em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">Gorilla beringei beringei</em>) living in the Virunga Massif of Rwanda, Uganda, and Democratic Republic of Congo has doubled in size since the 1980s, due to success in conservation efforts in and around their habitat. However, this increase in population size along with pressures on gorilla habitat raises concerns about spatial-temporal changes in the gorillas' food plants. This study modelled the abundance and distribution of gorilla food species in the Virunga Massif. A total of 1050 vegetation recordings were collected on five plant species that are known to be frequently consumed by gorillas in one region of the Virungas, the Karisoke area. Two types of datasets collected along vegetation zones were combined: one with plant abundance expressed with Braun-Blanquet scores; and the other with abundance expressed as biomass. Moreover, ecological characteristics of locations where these species occur were extracted from satellite imagery. Analysis of variance and linear regression models were used to examine relationships between food species abundances and predictor variables. Subsequently, maps for the food species were created using boosted regression trees (BRTs). The abundance of species differed across vegetation zones, and the differences were statistically significant among vegetation zones with enough species observations. The accuracy of the BRTs indicated greater than random predictions (AUC > 0.65). This study shows the suitable areas for these gorilla food species and relevant ecological variables determining their distribution. The results provide insights into habitat occupancy by mountain gorillas, and help to design a baseline for monitoring changes in the abundance of gorilla food species under changing climate and anthropogenic pressure.

Abstract:Studying the factors determining the sizes of home ranges, based on body mass, feeding style, and sociality level, is a long-standing goal at the intersection of ecology and evolution. Yet, how species-specific life history traits interact with different components of the landscape to shape differences in individual home ranges at within-population level has received much less attention. Here, we review the empirical literature on ungulates to map our knowledge of the relative effects of the key environmental drivers (resource availability, landscape heterogeneity, lethal and non-lethal risks) on the sizes of individual home ranges within a population and assess whether species' characteristics (body mass, diet, and social structure), account for observed variation in the responses of the sizes of individual home ranges to local environmental drivers. Estimating the sizes of home ranges and measuring environmental variables raise a number of methodological issues, which complicate the comparison of empirical studies. Still, from an ecological point of view, we showed that (1) a majority of papers (75%) supported the habitat productivity hypothesis, (2) the support for the influence of landscape heterogeneity was less pervasive across studies, (3) the response of cattle-type to variation in food availability was stronger than the response of moose-type, and (4) species-specific body mass or sociality level had no detectable effect on the level of support to the biological hypotheses. To our surprise, our systematic review revealed a dearth of studies focusing on the ecological drivers of the variation in the sizes of individual home ranges (only about 1% of articles that dealt with home ranges), especially in the later decade where more focus has been devoted to movement. We encourage researchers to continue providing such results with sufficient sample sizes and robust methodologies, as we still need to fully understand the link between environmental drivers and individual space use while accounting for life-history constraints.
