Abstract:Sunlight contains UVA and UVB radiation. The latter is essential for vitamin D synthesis but is the main cause of sunburn and skin cancer. Sunscreen use is advocated to reduce the sun's adverse effects but may compromise vitamin D status.The impact of sunscreens on vitamin D status was studied during a one‐week sun‐holiday in Tenerife (28°N). Comparisons were made between two formulations, each with a sun protection factor of 15. The UVA protection factor (UVA‐PF) was low in one case and high in the other. Healthy Polish volunteers (n=20 per group) were given the sunscreens and advised on correct application. Comparisons were also made with discretionary sunscreen use (n=22) and non‐holiday groups (51o5N, n=17). Sunscreen use in the intervention groups was measured. Behaviour, UVR exposure, clothing cover and sunburn were monitored. Serum 25(OH)D, was assessed by HPLC MS/MS. Use of intervention sunscreens was the same (p=0.599) and both equally inhibited sunburn, that was present in the discretionary use group. There was an increase (p=9x10‐8) of 28.0±16.5(SD) nmol/L 25(OH)D3 in the discretionary use group. The high and low UVA‐PF sunscreen groups showed statistically significant increases (p≤6.7x10‐5) of 19.0±14.2 and 13.0±11.4 nmol/L 25(OH)D3 respectively. The non‐holiday group showed a fall (p=0.08) of 2.5±5.6 nmol/L 25(OH)D3. Sunscreens may be used to prevent sunburn yet allow vitamin D synthesis. A high UVA‐PF sunscreen enables significantly higher vitamin D synthesis than a low UVA‐PF sunscreen because the former, by default, transmits more UVB than the latter.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Background Reducing exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is the main effective measure for preventing skin cancer. Educational campaigns targeting sun protection have been focused either on behaviour on the beach during the summer holiday alone, or during everyday outdoor activities of the children. Little is known about the comparison between these different settings. Objectives To analyse whether parents apply similar protective measures to reduce UV exposure for their young children in different outdoor environments. Methods Families (n = 2619) with children aged 3-6 years (response: 64.7%) were enrolled in a population based survey in the German city of Erlangen and its surrounding rural county. Using a self-administered standardized questionnaire parents gave information about demographic and photosensitivity data of their children, their knowledge about risk factors for skin cancer and their typical instructions given to their children when these played outside on a summer day in different outdoor environments. Results Significant discrepancies regarding the four UV protective measures (clothes, shade, sunhat, sunscreen) for children between an everyday outdoor setting and a holiday setting on the beach were observed. A high level of parental risk factor knowledge was significantly associated with a better protection for children in all four measures only on the beach. Photosensitivity and demo graphic characteristics had some impact on protective behaviour, too. Measures of sun protection were reduced with children's increasing age. Conclusions Skin cancer prevention campaigns should target the encouragement of sun protection for children also in outdoor activities of daily living, not only during a summer holiday on the beach.
Monte Carlo simulations of light transport in sunscreen formulations

Abstract:Sunscreens are used for the protection of human skin against the harmful effects of solar UV radiation. Due to the low thickness of sunscreen films typically applied to the skin, it can be challenging to achieve the strong absorbance needed for good UV-protection, and most efficient sunscreen compositions are desirable. The presence of scattering particles can increase the efficacy of dissolved UV-absorbers in the oil or water phases of the formulation. As many sunscreens contain UV-absorbing particles, it is of interest how much the scattering effect of such materials contribute to the protection of the respective sunscreen. The currently available software programs for simulating sunscreen performance are based on a Beer-Lambert law approach and do not take into account such scattering effects of particles. However, Monte Carlo simulations of the UV-light transport through sunscreen films are capable to take scattering from particles into consideration. Using Monte Carlo simulations, this work shows that the efficacy of absorbance is indeed increased in the presence of scattering particles. However, this is of limited significance when the particles are UV-absorbers themselves.
Sun exposure and protection habits: Self-reported attitudes, knowledge and behaviours

Abstract:Background: As exposure to UV radiation is the primary modifiable environmental risk factor associated with skin cancer, it remains the principal focus of most prevention strategies. Numerous sun protection campaigns have been implemented worldwide; however, their impact on the actual incidence and mortality rates of skin cancer seems to be limited. To create successful skin cancer prevention campaigns, it is important to have a comprehensive understanding of individuals' attitudes and behaviours regarding sun protection. The aim of the current study was to determine and report on the prevalence of self-reported attitudes, knowledge and behaviours regarding two of the major sun protection recommendations-avoidance of sun exposure and use of sunscreens-in an international representative sample across five continents. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in 20 countries using a web-based online survey. Findings: A total of 50,552 individuals, comprising 25,388 men (50.22%) and 25,164 women (49.78%), participated in the survey. Among them, 83.2% reported having been voluntarily exposed to the sun (for sun-basking reasons) at least once in the last 12 months, and 47.96% acknowledged being exposed to the sun between the hours of 10 AM and 4 PM. The primary reason for non-adherence was that these hours were the most convenient times (32.28%). Only 24.05% reported applying sunscreen every 2 h when outdoors. Forgetfulness was the primary reason as provided by 27.79% of participants. Males and older age groups were less likely to adopt sun-protective behaviours around the world. Forgetfulness and the challenges posed by time constraints seem to be the biggest barriers to proper adherence. Interpretation: These findings should prompt the collaboration with health authorities and the manufacturers to enhance adherence by setting reasonable sunscreen prices and creating formulations that make their application less burdensome.
The effect of sunscreen on vitamin D: a review

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Sunscreen use can prevent skin cancer, but there are concerns that it may increase the risk of vitamin D deficiency.OBJECTIVES: We aimed to review the literature to investigate associations between sunscreen use and vitamin D3 or 25 hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] concentration.METHODS: We systematically reviewed the literature following the Meta-analysis Of Observational Studies in Epidemiology (MOOSE) guidelines. We identified manuscripts published in English between 1970 and 21 November 2017. Eligible studies were experimental [using an artificial ultraviolet radiation (UVR) source], field trials or observational studies. The results of each of the experimental studies and field trials are described in detail. Two authors extracted information from observational studies, and applied quality scoring criteria that were developed specifically for this question. These have been synthesized qualitatively.RESULTS: We included four experimental studies, three field trials (two were randomized controlled trials) and 69 observational studies. In the experimental studies sunscreen use considerably abrogated the vitamin D3 or 25(OH)D production induced by exposure to artificially generated UVR. The randomized controlled field trials found no effect of daily sunscreen application, but the sunscreens used had moderate protection [sun protection factor SPF) ~16]. The observational studies mostly found no association or that self-reported sunscreen use was associated with higher 25(OH)D concentration.CONCLUSIONS: There is little evidence that sunscreen decreases 25(OH)D concentration when used in real-life settings, suggesting that concerns about vitamin D should not negate skin cancer prevention advice. However, there have been no trials of the high-SPF sunscreens that are now widely recommended. What's already known about this topic? Previous experimental studies suggest that sunscreen can block vitamin D production in the skin but use artificially generated ultraviolet radiation with a spectral output unlike that seen in terrestrial sunlight. Nonsystematic reviews of observational studies suggest that use in real life does not cause vitamin D deficiency. What does this study add? This study systematically reviewed all experimental studies, field trials and observational studies for the first time. While the experimental studies support the theoretical risk that sunscreen use may affect vitamin D, the weight of evidence from field trials and observational studies suggests that the risk is low. We highlight the lack of adequate evidence regarding use of the very high sun protection factor sunscreens that are now recommended and widely used.

Abstract:The application of a sunscreen with SPF100 protects the skin significantly better against skin damage by altering the inflammation marker IL‐18, cell vitality, cis‐UCA levels and DNA damage compared to SPF30 and SPF50+ by up to 40%. Excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) light leads to acute and chronic UV damage and is the main risk factor for the development of skin cancer. In most countries with western lifestyle, the topical application of sunscreens on UV‐exposed skin areas is by far the most frequently used preventive measure against sunburn. Further than preventing sunburns, increasing numbers of consumers are appreciating sunscreens with a medium‐ to high‐level sun protective factor (SPF) as basis for sustainable‐skin ageing or skin cancer prevention programs. However, recent investigations indicate that clinically significant DNA damages as well as a lasting impairment of cutaneous immunosurveillance already occur far below the standard of one minimal erythema dose (MED) sunburn level, which contributes to the current discussion of the clinical value of high‐protective SPF values. Ex vivo investigations on human skin showed that the application of SPF30 reduces DNA damage for a day long sun exposure (24 MED) drastically by about 53% but is significantly surpassed by SPF100 reducing DNA damage by approx. 73%. Further analysis on different SPF protection levels in UV‐exposed cell culture assays focusing on IL‐18, cell vitality and cis/trans‐urocanic acid support these findings. Whereas SPF30 and SPF50+ sunscreens already offer a solid UVB cover for most indications, our results indicate that SPF100 provides significant additional protection against mutagenic (non‐apoptotic‐) DNA damage and functional impairment of the cutaneous immunosurveillance and therefore qualifies as an optimized sunscreen for specifically vulnerable patient groups such as immunosuppressed patients, or skin cancer patients.

Abstract:Ultraviolet(UV) radiation from the sun has significant adverse effects on the skin, including sunburns, premature aging (photoaging), tanning, and many skin cancers. Sunscreens protect from harmful UV radiation. This article delves into the fundamentals of solar radiation, focusing on the UV spectrum, its effect on the skin, various types of sunscreens, and their mechanism of action to offer protection from harmful rays. UV exposure depends on factors like geographic location, altitude, time of day, season, and surface reflectivity. Sunscreen efficacy is measured by the Sun Protection Factor (SPF), which indicates how well a sunscreen can protect against UVB-induced sunburn. SPF ratings of 15, 30, and 50+ correspond to 93%, 96%, and 98% UVB blockage, respectively. In contrast, UVA protection lacks a standardized measure, with various in vitro and in vivo indices used globally. Sunscreens are categorized as organic (chemical) or inorganic (physical), each with distinct mechanisms and properties. Proper application of sunscreen, involving adequate coverage and reapplication, maximizes its protective benefits, significantly reducing the risk of UV-induced skin damage and cancers. Despite minor side effects like potential allergies, the advantages of sunscreen use, including prevention of sunburn, tanning, premature aging, and skin cancers, far outweigh the drawbacks. UV radiation from the sun poses significant risks to skin health. Understanding the nature and effects of UV radiation is crucial in appreciating the importance of protective measures such as sunscreen. The role of sunscreens in providing comprehensive protection cannot be overstated.
Sun exposure and challenges of sun protection in adolescents and young adults: A prevalence observational study

Abstract:The present study aimed to explore the adherence to and efficiency of skin protection measures among teenagers and young adults. The present study investigated the reasons for sun exposure and the obstacles impeding sun protection. In the summer of 2023, a self-reported questionnaire was posted on the social media account of two high schools, a university, some industrial companies and among the teenage children of a dermatology clinic. Descriptive statistics and multivariate logistic regression analyses were performed to assess the reasons for sun exposure behavior, sun protection measures and the frequency of sunburn among individuals aged 15 to 25 year. A total of 517 young individuals completed the questionnaire. It was found that 43.5% use a hat as a means of sun protection, and only 10% try to limit their exposure to the sun. Nevertheless, 78.7% indicate the use of sun cream, 61.7% expose themselves frequently or very frequently to the sun, and 51.2% exposed themselves to the sun for tanning. Young females were statistically more prone to tan [odds ratio (OR), 2.95; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.95-4.46] P=0.03 than males. Males exposed themselves to a 3-fold greater extent during recreational activities (OR, 2.98; 95% CI, 1.56-5.69) P=0,025, compared to females. On the whole, the present study demonstrates that young individuals aged 15 to 25 years are exposing themselves too frequently to the sun. A large proportion of individuals still wishes to acquire a tan. Even if the large majority of individuals uses sunscreen, the majority of these do not protect themselves correctly since they report becoming sunburnt frequently.
Development of a Survey of Sunscreen Use and Attitudes among Adults in Two Coastal States, 2019

Abstract:Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States, and regular use of broad-spectrum sunscreens can prevent skin cancer. However, a new law in Hawaii that limits sunscreen choices due to the belief that some UV (ultraviolet) filters may damage coral reefs may reduce sunscreen use and increase skin-cancer risk. Because of this, there is a need for measurement tools to help understand consumer behavior and determinants of sunscreen purchase and use. The objectives of this study were (1) to test new questionnaire measures relevant to the Hawaii Sunscreen Ban; and (2) to assess adults' knowledge, attitudes, and habits related to sunscreen in two other coastal states. This survey of adult residents of California and Florida was conducted in the summer of 2019. Newly developed scales addressed beliefs about effects of sunscreens on aquatic/marine environments and awareness of the Hawaii sunscreen ban. Respondents completed the survey twice to evaluate the test-retest reliability. Respondents (n = 162) were mainly female, White, and college-educated. New scales had moderate-to-high internal consistency and high test-retest reliability. Sunscreen use was high, sunburn was common, and knowledge and attitudes about sunscreen were modest. Most respondents did not know the specifics of the Hawaii Sunscreen Ban. In multivariate models, significant predictors of sunscreen use were being older, female, and having higher sunscreen knowledge. Sunscreen beliefs were not significantly associated with sunscreen use or sunburn. The findings support the use of the newly developed survey and suggest that more education about sunscreen and sunscreen ingredients is needed.
Influence of sunscreen formulation on the transfer of mineral and organic ultraviolet filters from skin to seawater in simulated ocean bathing tests

Abstract:Objective Significant research and regulatory attention have been focused on the potential for some ultraviolet filters (UVFs) to rinse off from beachgoers' skin into seawater leading to exposure to sea life, especially coral reefs. The amount of UVFs potentially rinsed from skin during recreational beach activities has not been well‐studied, leading to uncertainty about the potential magnitude of aquatic UVF exposure due to changes in sunscreen use patterns. This study quantifies rinse‐off of UVFs in sunscreen from skin into synthetic seawater and identifies differences in rinse‐off quantity due to formulation type with a goal of informing future modeling efforts aimed at estimating UVF exposure to sea life associated with recreational activities at the beach. Methods UVF rinse‐off from skin during recreation in seawater was simulated by applying eight different sunscreen products to porcine skin samples followed by three periods of shaking in synthetic seawater totaling 40 minutes. The rinsed mass of six UVFs – zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, avobenzone, homosalate, octisalate, and octocrylene – was determined analytically in synthetic seawater and in extractant rinsate from glassware for organic UVFs and compared among formulas. Results Among the 22 UVF‐formulation combinations tested, 19 resulted in less than 10% of the applied UVF rinsed from skin. All formulation‐UVF combinations where the formula types were water‐in‐oil (reverse phase) emulsions or anhydrous resulted in 5% or less of the applied UVF rinsed to synthetic seawater. Sunscreens formulated as oil‐in‐water emulsions yielded higher rinse off percentages for all UVFs tested, with a maximum of 20% rinse‐off of avobenzone in one lotion. Conclusion The potential for sunscreen UVF rinse‐off is significantly influenced by formulation and is generally well below the prior assumed rinse‐off levels used to estimate risk. Formulation consideration is therefore essential for accurate exposure models used in environmental risk assessment. Anhydrous and reverse phase (water‐in‐oil) sunscreen formulations tested resulted in lower UVF transfer from skin to synthetic seawater in simulated ocean bathing tests and as a result, are expected to yield lower UVF exposures to sea life. This approach can be used in predictive environmental exposure models to support ecologically safe sunscreen formulation design.

Abstract:Objective Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is a known environmental key factor for premature skin aging. Only few scientific evidence is available to support the effects of UVR on the skin microbiome. This in vivo pilot study aimed to evaluate the impact on the skin microbiome upon erythemal UV exposure and the protection of UV‐exposed skin microbiome by UV filters. Methods Ten female volunteers were treated with an SPF 20 sunscreen and placebo formulation (without UV filters) on their upper middle backs and irradiated with an erythemal dose (2 MED) by a solar simulator. Skin swabbing samples from four zones (i.e., unexposed, exposed, sunscreen‐ and placebo‐treated on exposed skin) were collected for the microbiome analysis before and 2 hours after UV exposure, respectively, and processed via shallow 16S rRNA Amplicon and Shotgun Metagenomic sequencing. An in vitro UV method was developed to confirm the protection of isolated bacterial strains by single UV filters and combinations. Results Alpha diversity was impacted by significant inter‐individual differences and by treatment rather than by irradiation. Cutibacterium acnes was found to be most abundant and a confounding factor for diversity. On a species level Lactobacillus crispatus was negatively associated with UVR and placebo treatment, whereas there was a positive association with the sunscreen treatment. The sunscreen treatment also favored an interaction network with central Micrococcus genus. The in vitro results showed that both single UV filters and combinations had specific effects on the survival rates of L. crispatus, C. acnes, and S. epidermidis. Conclusion We identified potential microorganisms and bacterial interactions that were associated with an SPF 20 sunscreen treatment. The specific protection of L. crispatus as a key player in the UV‐exposed skin microbiome and reduction of C. acnes population by UV filters might lead to new cosmetic concepts for photoprotection.

Accumulated p53 protein and UVA protection level of sunscreens

Abstract:Nuclear p53 expression is a sensitive parameter for the detection of ultraviolet (UV)-induced skin damage, and it has been used as an endpoint to evaluate the effectiveness of sunscreens. In this study, we compared the protection provided by two sunscreens having identical sun protection factors (SPF) but different UVA protection factors (UVA-PF) measured by the persistent pigment darkening method (PPD). The SPF of the sunscreens was 7 and the UVA-PF were respectively 7 and 3. Nuclear p53 protein was quantified in human skin biopsies treated with sunscreens and exposed 8 times to 5 MED of solar simulated radiation (SSR). The results showed that both sunscreens offered only partial protection against the increased expression of nuclear p53 protein induced by repetitive SSR exposures. However, a significantly lower level of p53-positive cells was found in areas protected with the sunscreen having the higher UVA-PF compared to the other sunscreen protected areas. In order to verify whether the difference in efficacy of these products was due to the difference in UVA absorption capacity, we quantified epidermal p53 protein accumulation after 8 exposures to either UVA (320-400 nm) or UVA1 (340-400 nm). We showed that as with SSR, repetitive exposures to 12.5 and 25 J/cm2 of UVA or UVA1 induced a significant increase in p53-positive cells in the human epidermis. These results confirmed that SPF determined on the basis of an acute erythemal reaction does not predict the level of protection against cumulative damage. They also showed that the protection provided by two sunscreens with different UVA protection factors is different (based on nuclear p53 protein accumulation), and that the PPD method can distinguish varying levels of sunscreen efficacy against UVA-induced cell damage.
Validation of a predictive method for sunscreen formula evaluation using gene expression analysis in a Chinese reconstructed full‐thickness skin model

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to establish a predictive in vitro method for assessing the photoprotective properties of sunscreens using a reconstructed full-thickness skin model.MATERIALS AND METHODS: A full-thickness skin model reconstructed with human fibroblasts and keratinocytes isolated from Chinese skin was exposed to daily UV radiation (DUVR). We examined the transcriptomic response, identifying genes for which expression was modulated by DUVR in a dose-dependent manner. We then validated the methodology for efficacy evaluation of different sunscreens formulas.RESULTS: The reconstructed skin model was histologically consistent with human skin, and upon DUVR exposure, the constituent fibroblasts and keratinocytes exhibited transcriptomic alterations in pathways associated with oxidative stress, inflammation and extracellular matrix remodelling. When used to evaluate sunscreen protection on the model, the observed level of protection from UV-induced gene expression was consistent with the corresponding protection factors determined clinically and allowed for statistical ranking of sunscreen efficacy.CONCLUSIONS: Within this study we show that quantification of gene modulation within the reconstructed skin model is a biologically relevant approach with sensitivity and predictability to evaluate photoprotection products.

Abstract:The use of sunscreens is an important and essential component of photoprotection. Since their introduction during the first half of the last century, sunscreens have benefited enormously from major technological advances such as the development of novel UV filters; as a result, their efficacy in preventing UV‐induced erythema is unequivocal. More recently, however, new challenges have appeared, which have prompted a robust discussion about the safety of sunscreens. These include topics directly related to photoprotection of human skin such as improved/alternative methods for standardization of assessment of the efficacy of sunscreens, but also many others such as photoprotection beyond UV, concerns about human toxicity and ecological safety, the potential of oral photoprotective measures, consequences of innovative galenic formulations. On a first glance, some of these might raise questions and doubts among dermatologists, physicians and the general public about the use sunscreens as a means of photoprotection. This situation has prompted us to critically review such challenges, but also opportunities, based on existing scientific evidence. We conclude by providing our vision about how such challenges can be met best in the future in an attempt to create the ideal sunscreen, which should provide adequate and balanced protection and be easy and safe to use.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Sunscreens absorb ultraviolet B (UVB) and it is a major concern that sunscreen use may lead to vitamin D deficiency.OBJECTIVES: To investigate the relation between the amount of sunscreen applied and the vitamin D serum level in humans after UVB exposure under controlled conditions.METHODS: Thirty-seven healthy volunteers with fair skin types were randomized to receive an inorganic sunscreen with sun protection factor (SPF) 8 of 0 mg cm(-2) , 0.5 mg cm(-2) , 1 mg cm(-2) , 1.5 mg cm(-2) , or 2 mg cm(-2) thickness on the upper body, approximately 25% of the body area. Participants were irradiated with a fixed UVB dose of 3 standard erythema doses 20 min after sunscreen application. This procedure was repeated four times with a 2- to 3-day interval. Blood samples were drawn before the first irradiation and 3 days after the last to determine the serum vitamin D level expressed as 25-hydroxyvitamin D(3) [25(OH)D].RESULTS: The vitamin D serum level increased in an exponential manner with decreasing thickness of sunscreen layer in response to UVB exposure. For all thicknesses of sunscreen, the level of 25(OH)D increased significantly after irradiation (P<0.05), except for the group treated with 2 mg cm(-2) , in which the increase in 25(OH)D was not statistically significant (P=0.16).CONCLUSIONS: Vitamin D production increases exponentially when thinner sunscreen layers than recommended are applied (<2 mg cm(-2) ). When the amount of sunscreen and SPF advised by the World Health Organization are used, vitamin D production may be abolished. Re-evaluation of sun-protection strategies could be warranted.

Abstract:The link between chronic sun exposure of human skin and harmful clinical consequences such as photo-aging and skin cancers is now indisputable. These effects are mostly due to ultraviolet (UV) rays (UVA, 320–400 nm and UVB, 280–320 nm). The UVA/UVB ratio can vary with latitude, season, hour, meteorology and ozone layer, leading to different exposure conditions. Zenithal sun exposure (for example on a beach around noon under a clear sky) can rapidly induce visible and well-characterized clinical consequences such as sunburn, predominantly induced by UVB. However, a limited part of the global population is exposed daily to such intense irradiance and until recently little attention has been paid to solar exposure that does not induce any short term clinical impact. This paper will review different studies on non-extreme daily UV exposures with: (1) the characterization and the definition of the standard UV daylight and its simulation in the laboratory; (2) description of the biological and clinical effects of such UV exposure in an in vitro reconstructed human skin model and in human skin in vivo, emphasizing the contribution of UVA rays and (3) analysis of photoprotection approaches dedicated to prevent the harmful impact of such UV exposure.

Abstract:Purpose of ReviewTo provide an up-to-date synopsis of the literature on the safety of sunscreen active ingredients in humans and the environment and highlight regulatory changes in the USA.Recent FindingsCurrently, as per the US Food and Drug Administration, the only ultraviolet filters generally recognized as safe and effective are inorganic zinc oxide (ZnO) and titanium dioxide (TiO2). In vivo human systemic absorption studies found that common organic filters attain sufficient plasma concentrations to require carcinogenicity and reproductive studies. In vivo human skin penetration studies showed ZnO nanoparticles (ZnO-NP) did not penetrate the stratum corneum. Limited quantities of TiO2-NP may be absorbed systemically. In laboratory settings, corals exposed to oxybenzone manifested concentration-dependent toxicity and bleaching. In response, bills passed in Hawaii and elsewhere ban sales of oxybenzone-containing sunscreens. ZnO-NP, but not TiO2-NP, caused coral bleaching under controlled conditions.SummaryThe collective knowledge on sunscreen safety is continually evolving, with many preliminary findings. Studies on the effects of systemic absorption of organic filters in humans are forthcoming; importantly, there has been no evidence of harm over decades of use. Organic (less so inorganic) filters caused coral bleaching in controlled environments, but filter concentrations may not have been realistic, and bleaching is predominantly driven by other factors. No present evidence suggests any marketed sunscreens should be avoided. For consumers with concerns, inorganic ZnO and TiO2 are supported by the most reassuring data at the time of writing.
