Abstract:Objective: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, especially with high-risk HPV (HR-HPV) genotypes, is closely associated with cervical cancer. This study aimed to observe the epidemiological characteristics of HPV infection among healthy women in Beijing, China. Materials and Methods: Cervical specimens were collected from 29,436 healthy women, who underwent health check-ups in Peking Union Medical College Hospital between 2016 and 2019. A commercial kit was used for the detection of 15 HR-HPV and two low-risk HPV (LR-HPV) genotypes. Results: A total of 3586 (12.18%) participants tested positive for HPV, 3467 of which were infected with HR-HPVs. The most prevalent genotypes were HPV52, 58, 16, 51, and 56. Moreover, while infection with a single genotype (9.84%) was more prevalent, HPV16+52 was the most common combination in those infected with multiple HPVs. Furthermore, the highest infection rate among age groups was in women aged <25 years (20.92%). No significant difference in the prevalence was observed from 2016 to 2019. However, HPV incidence in Beijing was significantly different than that in all other areas in China, except for Zhengzhou (p < 0.05). Conclusion: Our findings could serve as potential reference for better understanding of the epidemiological characteristics of HPV infection in Beijing.

Abstract:Abstract Purpose To investigate the distribution of the incidence and genotypes of human papillomavirus (HPV) among women with cervical cancer (CC) and precancerous cervical lesions in Yueyang City, China, to develop prevention and control strategies for CC. Methods A total of 3674 patients with cervical lesions and cervical cancer who attended 7 hospitals in Yueyang City between September 2019 and September 2022 were included. They included 1910 cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) I, 718 CIN II, 576 CIN II and 470 CC, respectively. The HPV genotyping of the above patients was detected by Real time-PCR in the laboratory department of each hospital. Results The total HPV prevalence was 74.69% (95% CI 73.28–76.09%) in 3674 patients. The incidence of high- and low-risk HPV was 73.46% and 7.21%, respectively. The prevalence of HPV in CIN I, CIN II, CIN III, and invasive CC (ICC) groups was 66.65% (1273/1910, 95% CI 64.53–68.77%), 80.78% (580/718, 95% CI 77.89–83.67%), 83.88% (483/576, 95% CI 80.84–86.87%), and 86.81% (408/470, 95% CI 83.74–89.88%), respectively. The top three HPV subtypes in ICC are HPV16, HPV52, and HPV58. The prevalence of HPV 16 increased with increasing disease severity, with this genotype being present in 12.57%, 20.89%, 36.98%, and 50.85% of CIN I, CIN II, CIN III, and ICC cases, respectively ( p < 0.001). Single HPV infection was predominant in cervical lesions, with a prevalence of 48.50% (95% CI 46.89–50.12%). The HPV prevalence varied by age, being highest among women with ICC, CIN I, CIN II and CIN III aged ≥ 60 years, 50–59 years, 40–49 years, and 40–49 years, respectively. Conclusion The prevalence of HPV in patients with cervical lesions in Yueyang City was very high, with HPV 16, 52, 58, 53, and 51 being the five most common HPV genotypes in patients with cervical lesions.

Abstract:Background Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the main etiological factor for cervical cancer and premalignant lesions of the cervix. The purposes of the present study were to determine the prevalence of type-specific HPV infections and the association of different HPV types with cervical dysplasia among women in Zhejiang province, Southeast China. Methods A total of 15,267 women presenting to a gynaecological outpatient clinic were enrolled in this study. Women were screened for HPV in addition to routine cervical cytology testing. Microarray hybridization and liquid-based cytology tests were used to detect HPV genotypes and cervical cytology, respectively. Results Based on the population attending a gynaecological outpatient clinic, overall prevalence of any 23 HPV type was 22.8% and multiple HPV infection was found in 4.0% of all the outpatients. HPV prevalence showed bimodal age distribution, with a peak (55.7%) at the ≤20 age group and a second one (35.5%) at >60 age group. In total samples, the five most frequent types were HPV 16 (4.4%), 58 (2.9%), 52 (2.7%), 33 (2.2%) and 11 (1.9%). Overall HPV prevalence increased with the severity of the cytologic result. Analysis through crude odds ratios (ORs) revealed that the cervical lesion risk of HPV-infected women increased to about 26-fold of uninfected women (OR 26.1, 95% CI 22.4 to 30.3). The five most risky HPV types associated with abnormal cytology were HPV 73, 16, 82, 45 and 51. Conclusions This study provided baseline data on HPV prevalence in women attending a gynecological outpatient clinic in Zhejiang province. Our data will supply guidance for the primary screening and vaccination program for cervical cancer in this area.
Prevalence of High-Risk Human Papillomavirus and Cervical Lesion Risk Factors: A Population-Based Study in Zhejiang, China 2010-2019

Abstract:This study investigates the epidemiological characteristics of high-risk human papillomavirus (hrHPV) and analyzes the risk of cervical lesions among women in Zhejiang province, China. HPV data were collected retrospectively from a cohort of 67 742 women who underwent routine cervical cancer screening from 2010 to 2019. Precancerous and cervical cancer cases (n = 980) were histologically diagnosed as a low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL; n = 341) or a high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL; n = 499) and invasive cervical cancer (ICC) (n = 140) groups. Disordered logistic regression analysis was used to test the relationship between different degrees of cervical lesions, HPV16/18 infection status, positive rate of p16(INK4a) (p16), Ki-67 expression, and patient's age in SIL and ICC (270/980 cases) patients. HPV52 (4.7%) was the most prevalent HPV type, followed by HPV16 (3.3%) and HPV58 (2.6%). HPV16 was the most common HPV in SIL, peaking at the age of 30-39. The HPV16 infection rate was significantly higher in HSIL than in LSIL patients; moreover, HPV16, HPV18, and HPV51 infection rates were significantly higher in ICC patients than in HSIL (Bonferroni-adjusted p < 0.0167). The presence of HPV16/18 was also associated with a higher risk of developing HSIL from LSIL (odds ratio [OR] = 9.198, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.76-127.49). The increased p16 expression and HPV16/18 were associated with the increased risk of cancer progression (OR = 1.092, 95% CI: 1.03-1.36; OR = 1.495, 95% CI: 1.23-2.19, respectively). The identified hrHPV genotypes in cervical lesions can serve as a baseline indicator for future vaccine assessment in Zhejiang, China.

Abstract:Most cervical cancers were closely associated with human papillomavirus (HPV) infections. Therefore, understanding the ecological diversity of HPV prevalence and genotype distribution among various populations in different geographical regions was essential for optimizing HPV vaccination and maximizing the vaccination effects. A total of 12,053 patient data from the three-level hospitals in Hengyang city were retrospectively analyzed. In this study, the HPV prevalence was 10.16% overall, and the multiple-type infection rate was 1.83%. The HR-HPV infection rate was 8.52%. The top six HPV genotypes were as follows in descending order: HPV16, HPV58, HPV52, HPV39, HPV51, and HPV53. The HPV prevalence in the group above 60 years old was the most, and their HR-HPV infection rate corresponded to the most too. The infection rates of HPV and HR-HPV among outpatients were both lower than those among the hospitalized-patients, respectively. Among the hospitalized-patients, the infection rates of HPV and HR-HPV among the 50–60 years group were the most in both. The HR-HPV ratio-in-positive among HPV-positive patients with the histopathologic examination was higher than that among those patients without. Among 52 HPV-positive patients with cervical squamous carcinoma, the ratio-in-positive of HPV16 was 61.54%. This study demonstrated that the HPV prevalence varied with age among women from Hengyang district of Hunan province in China and showed that HPV16, HPV58, HPV52, HPV39, HPV51, and HPV53 genotypes were more popularly distributed in this region, which could provide the experimental basis for Chinese public health measures on cervical cancer prevention.

Abstract:Persistent high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is the pivotal cause of cervical carcinogenesis. HPV types distribution varies greatly by region, and its long-term changes of prevalence remain to be fully characterized in China. Here, the largest population of 198,111 consecutive women who underwent routine cervical screening were investigated from 2015 to 2021 in Guangzhou, south China. The results showed that the overall HPV prevalence was 21.66% (42,911/198,111), and the annual prevalence increased significantly from 2015 to 2021 ( p < 0.001). HPV52, 16, 58, CP8304, 51, 53, 39, and 68 were the most prevalent HPV types. The relative HPV-positive rate correlated positively with the progression of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia ( p < 0.001); HPV16 was the predominant carcinogenic type, followed by HPV52 and HPV18. HPV infections were significantly age-specific, and 26.51% (11,375/42,911) of cases were caused by multiple HPV types. In addition, HPV infections typically cleared over a median time of 16 (interquartile range 9–31) months, and the clearance of HPV16 was significantly faster than that of other types ( p < 0.001). These findings may serve as a guide for local governments to evaluate HPV vaccination and cervical cancer prevention strategies in south China.

Abstract:Objectives: Understanding the prevalence and genotype distribution of human papillomavirus (HPV) is critical for managing HPV vaccination programmes. Using a retrospective cross-sectional study, we examined long-term trends of HPV prevalence in Wenzhou, a coastal city in China. Setting and participants: Cervical exfoliated cells were collected from 127 938 women who underwent cervical cancer screening at the gynaecology outpatient clinic of Wenzhou People's Hospital from January 2011 to December 2020. HPV infections and genotypes were determined. The HPV genotypes were 16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 53, 56, 58, 59, 66, 68, 6, 11, 42, 43, 44 and 81. From 2011 to 2014, we used PCR and inflow hybridisation for typing assays. In 2015-2020, HPV genotyping was performed on the collected specimens using PCR and flow fluorescence hybridisation. Results: The overall prevalence of HPV infection was 17.8%. Across age groups, the prevalence fluctuated between 15.9% and 37.4%, with two peaks in the ≤20 and ≥51 year groups. The annual prevalence varied between 12.2% and 28.8%, with a significant decrease in 2011-2018 and a flat trend in 2018-2020. The five most common HPV genotypes were HPV52 (3.6%), 16 (3.0%), 58 (2.5%), 53 (1.9%) and 81 (1.3%). The prevalence of high-risk gene subtypes HPV56, 59 and the low-risk subtype HPV44 increased. Single HPV infection was the most common. Conclusion: The prevalence of HPV in Wenzhou is low to mid-range; however, the high-risk genetic subtypes HPV56 and 59 have increased in recent years. We need to promote HPV vaccination and increase education regarding safer sex.

A Survey in Liangshan, Sichuan Showed Higher Human Papillomavirus Infection Rate and Cervical Cancer Risk for Yi Chinese Compared to Han Chinese

Abstract:Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is a sexually transmitted virus reported to be strongly correlated to the development of cervical cancers. An ethnic minority in Liangshan, Sichuan known as Yi Chinese were reported to be more susceptible to sexually transmitted virus, such as the human immunodeficiency virus. However, the prevalence of HPV and cervical cancers in Liangshan state remains unclear and corresponding prevention system had not been established. To provide suitable cervical cancer prevention protocols and facilities, a screen for cervical cancer to develop basic understanding of the current prevalence was urgently required in Liangshan, Sichuan. Methods: A 3-year survey in natural population was conducted in Liangshan, where female residents were recruited from 3 main resident sites and tested for infection of 15 HPV variants using polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-reverse dot hybridization and cytologic abnormality with ThinPrep cytologic tests (TCTs). Personal information on the resident identification cards and contacts were collected for identifying ethnicity and following up in this survey. Those with high-risk HPV infection and/or abnormal TCT results were further diagnosed with colposcopy guided cervical biopsies. Follow-up visits were conducted every 12 months for those with lesion not worse than cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) grade 1 (CIN1) until progressing to CIN grade 2 (CIN2) or the end of survey. HPV infection rates of Han and Yi Chinese were calculated with age strata and compared. Cancer risks were estimated and compared with data of first and final year and between Han and Yi Chinese. Results: There were 4,723 valid participants including 3,813 Han Chinese, 786 Yi Chinese and 124 of other ethnic minorities involved in this study. At the beginning of the survey, 515 participants (10.90%) were tested positive for HPV, 298 participants (6.31%) were found abnormal in TCTs and throughout the survey 63 cases with severe cervical lesions (CIN2 or worse) were reported. Of those with severe lesions, most patients were infected by HPV 52, 16 and 58. The HPV infection rates in the first screen were 10.46% for Han Chinese but 13.10% for Yi Chinese which was significantly higher with a P value of 0.03, resulting severe cervical lesion rates of 1.29% and 1.68% respectively. Conclusions: Significantly higher HPV infection rate and severe lesion rate were reported on Yi Chinese, suggesting more attention should be paid to Yi Chinese in developing cervical cancer prevention schemes. Compared to other HPV variants, HPV16 was mostly found associated with severe cervical lesions while HPV52 was the most prevalent. Fortunately, both variants are covered by HPV vaccines indicating vaccination should be considerably effective in Liangshan state.
Prevalence and genotype distribution of human papillomavirus infection in Huzhou City, eastern China, 2018-2019

Abstract:Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is involved in cervical cancer development, and hence understanding its prevalence and genotype distribution is important. However, there are few reports on the prevalence and genotype distribution of HPV in the city of Huzhou in China. Methods: In this retrospective cross-sectional study, 11,506 women who visited Huzhou Maternity & Child Health Care Hospital between January 2018 and October 2019 were enrolled. The results of HPV genotyping and cytology tests were analyzed. Results: The overall prevalence of HPV infection was 15.5%. The rate of high-risk (HR) HPV infection (13.5%) was higher than that of single low-risk (LR) HPV infection (2.0%) (p<0.05). The five most common HPV genotypes were HPV52 (3.3%), 16 (1.9%), 58 (1.7%), 53 (1.5%), and 81 (1.2%). The infection rate of HPV peaked in women aged 16-24 and women aged ≥55. The infection rate of HPV58 or HPV81 appeared as a single peak in women aged ≥55. The rates of HR-HPV and LR-HPV infection were higher in subjects with abnormal cytology (p<0.05). Conclusions: HPV infection is high in Huzhou, and HPV53 and HPV81 are the prevalent genotypes. HPV infection rate is associated with age and cytology. Regional HPV surveillance is essential to optimize current HPV prevention and vaccine development.
[Two brothers with very late onset of muscle weakness in X-linked recessive spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy].

Abstract:Spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy (SBMA) is a motor neuron disease characterized by slowly progressive spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy associated with signs of androgen insensitivity including gynecomastia. This disease becomes prominent clinically in the fourth and fifth decades of life. Mutations of the androgen receptor (AR) gene associated with an expansion of CAG repeats is the cause of this disease. Here we report a unique family case in two brothers with SBMA with very late onset of muscular weakness. Motor functional symptoms in the two brothers developed at the ages of 66 and 78 years. The number of CAG repeats in the AR gene in both patients was 42. According to previous reports, the number of CAG repeats is related to the age at onset of muscular weakness. Our patient's conditions were consistent with this concept as there was a short expansion of 42 CAG repeats linked to the clinical phenotype of very late onset of muscular weakness. However, the issue of whether the number of CAG repeats is related to the age at onset of androgen insensitivity is still controversial. In the younger brother, gynecomastia appeared in his 20's and preceded the development of muscular weakness by about 40 years, whereas the gynecomastia in the older brother was unremarkable throughout his life. Our brother cases, which had the same number of CAG repeats and should share many common genetic factors, exhibited the androgen insensitivity differed. We therefore consider that an expansion of CAG repeats in the AR gene is not necessarily related to the age at onset of androgen insensitivity. In conclusion, the etiologies of muscular weakness and androgen insensitivity in SBMA could be different.

Abstract:The current study analysed spatial-temporal modifications of the phytoplankton community and water quality, during dry and wet seasons. The phytoplankton community was studied in three areas: Armando Ribeiro Gonçalves Reservoir (ARG), which is an important public use reservoir in RN, Pataxó Channel (PC-before water treatment), Itajá, RN, and after the water treatment (WTP). Water samples from the reservoir were collected during both dry (January, February and November, 2006) and wet seasons (March to June, 2006). Quali-quantitative analyses of phytoplankton were carried out. Results indicated a qualitative similarity of the phytoplankton community in the three areas. However, significant differences were registered in these areas in relation to species relative abundance, with dominance of potentially toxic cyanobacteria, such as Planktothrix agardhii Gomont (dry season) and Microcystis aeruginosa Kutz (wet season). Ecological indexes obtained higher values before water treatment. Nevertheless, densities of cyanobacteria (organisms/mL) gradually reduced in the waters of the reservoir and of the Pataxó Channel before and after water treatment. After the treatment, density values of cyanobacteria were adequate for human consumption, according to the values established by the Health Ministry.

Abstract:Abstract Background Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection can cause cervical and other cancers, including vulva, vagina, penis, anus, or oropharynx. However, in China's northern Henan Province, data on the prevalence and genotype distribution of HPV among women attending gynecology clinics is limited. This study aimed to investigate the current prevalence and genotype distribution of HPV among women attending gynecology clinics in northern Henan Province. Methods This study included 15,616 women aged 16–81 years old who visited the Xinxiang central hospital's gynecology department between January 2018 and December 2019. HPV DNA was detected by a conventional PCR method followed by HPV type-specific hybridization, which was designed to detect 17 high-risk HPV (HR-HPV) genotypes and 20 low-risk HPV (LR-HPV) genotypes. HPV prevalence and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were calculated using SPSS 18.0. Results The overall HPV prevalence was 19.7% among women in northern Henan Province. Single, double, and multiple HPV infections accounted for 13.7%, 4.3%, and 1.8% of the total cases. Most infections were caused by HR-HPV (71.8%), and single genotype HPV infection (13.7%) was the most common pattern. The most common HR-HPV genotype was HPV16 (4.3%), followed by HPV52 (3.5%) and HPV58 (2.0%). The most common LR-HPV genotype was HPV6 (1.4%), followed by HPV61 (1.1%) and HPV81 (1.1%). Conclusions HPV infection is high among women attending gynecology clinics in northern Henan Province. The highest prevalence was found in women less than 20 years old. In northern Henan Province, the 9-valent HPV vaccine is strongly recommended for regular immunization.

Clinical specimens were collected from 46365 patients at Beijing Friendship Hospital, Capital Medical University from January 2017 to December 2020. HPV DNA genotype testing was performed using Real‐time PCR. The infection rates based on disease group were compared using the chi‐square test. The linear‐by‐linear association test and gamma value were used to assess the changes in HPV prevalence over calendar year and age group. A total of 10514 women were infected with HR‐HPV, with an overall positive rate of 22.7%. The most prevalence HR‐HPV types were HPV 52, 58, 16, 51 and 66 and HPV 59 had a higher prevalence except for HPV16, 58 and 52 in cervical cancer group. Single infection of HR‐HPV was dominant among different diseases groups. The infection rate of HR‐HPV decreased first and then increased from below 20 years old to over 60 years old. There were significant differences in the HR‐HPV infection rates among the age and disease groups. Our findings demonstrate that the genotype distribution of HR‐HPV varied with age and diseases. The HR‐HPV genotypes prevalence were found to be directly useful for local governments to promote HPV targeted vaccination in the study region.</p><p>This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Background: Persistent infection with high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) plays a key role in the onset of cervical cancer. This study was designed to examine the epidemiological trends and genotype distribution of HPV from 2014 to 2023 in the plateau region of Southwest China. Methods: The findings could offer valuable insights for clinical screening of cervical cancer and the formulation of HPV vaccination policies. This retrospective study analyzed 66,000 women who received HPV-DNA testing at the First People's Hospital of Qujing, Yunnan, China, between 2014 and 2023. The cohort consisted of 33,512 outpatients, 3,816 inpatients, and 28,672 individuals undergoing health examinations. Cervical cells were collected for DNA extraction, and PCR amplification along with Luminex xMAP technology were used to detect 27 HPV genotypes. The data analysis was conducted using GraphPad Prism and IBM SPSS Statistics 27 software. Results: The overall HPV infection rate at the First People's Hospital of Qujing declined from 24.92% in 2014 to 16.29% in 2023, averaging 16.02%. Specific infection rates were 18.50% among outpatients, 12.97% among inpatients, and 13.53% for health examination attendees. The predominant high-risk HPV genotypes identified were HPV52 (2.61%), HPV16 (2.06%), HPV58 (1.81%), HPV53 (1.55%), and HPV39 (1.09%). Meanwhile, the most frequent low-risk HPV genotypes were HPV6 (1.30%), HPV61 (1.21%), and HPV11 (0.85%). In HPV-positive cases, the distribution of single, double, triple, and quadruple or more infections were 79.90%, 15.17%, 3.59%, and 1.33%, respectively. The proportions of pure LR-HPV, pure HR-HPV, and mixed infections were 22.16%, 67.82%, and 10.02%, respectively. Age-specific analysis revealed a bimodal distribution of HPV infection, with the infection rate rapidly decreasing from 44.02% in the ≤ 19 age group to 19.55% in the 20-29 age group and 13.84% in the 30-39 age group, followed by a gradual increase to 14.64% in the 40-49 age group, 16.65% in the 50-59 age group, and 22.98% in the ≥ 60 age group. The coverage rates of the three available vaccines are all below 50%. The results of this study indicated a declining trend in HPV prevalence in the plateau region of Southwest China over the period from 2014 to 2023, especially in the reduction of genotypes targeted by vaccines. Conclusion: There were significant variations in the genotypes prevalent among different age groups, years, and patient sources within the same region. The underwhelming vaccination rates emphasize the critical need for developing either a multivalent vaccine or a personalized vaccine that targets the HPV genotypes common in the Chinese population. Furthermore, vaccinating adolescents to curb HPV infection and ensuring regular cervical cancer screenings for postmenopausal women are crucial steps.

Abstract:Background Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is closely correlated with cervical lesions. However, the HPV prevalence varies among different districts. This retrospective study investigated the HPV genotype distribution and its relationship with cervical lesions in southern Hunan Province. Methods The database at our Pathology Department was searched for HPV and morphological results during 2018–2020 were reviewed. A total of 49,955 gynaecological inpatients and outpatients, each of whom underwent HPV testing based on the amplification of L1 sequence and reverse dot blot hybridization, were included in this study. Available cytology and relevant histological examination results were reviewed. Enrolled cases were categorized into seven groups based on their age. Household registry and educational level were evaluated. Results Seven thousand two hundred eighty-six females were positive for HPV and the overall HPV positivity rate was 14.59%. The top five most prevalent HPV genotypes were HPV52, 16, 58, 53 and 51 (22.98%, 17.54%, 14.29%, 7.47%, and 5.70%, respectively). The HPV prevalence curve specific to the seven age groups showed a bimodal distribution. High school education or blow and rural residence served as risk factors for HPV infection. Single infection was the main type of HPV infection, and multiple infections occurred in 21.92% of the infected women. Of 3,148 cases had cytological results, 1,149 (36.50%) had abnormal cytological abnormalities. Among 2,833 participants with histological examination, 2000 (70.60%) had cervical abnormalities. Cytological and pathological abnormalities were mainly associated with infection with HPV16, 52 and 58. Further analysis found that HPV16, 58, 52 and 33 were the main genotypes associated with high-grade squamous lesions (HSIL) and that HPV16, 31, 33 and 58 were independent risk factors for HSIL (odd ratio [OR] = 1.70, 1.99, 2.59, 2.29; 95% CI = 1.41–2.03, 1.17–3.41, 1.88–3.59, 1.85–2.82; all p < 0.05). HPV16, 58, 52, 18 and 33 were the most frequent genotypes detected in squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) patients, and HPV16 and 18 were independent risk factors for cervical carcinomas (OR = 6.72;95% CI = 5.48–8.25; p < 0.001; OR = 1.67, 95% CI = 1.22–2.30; p = 0.001). Conclusion This retrospective study demonstrated the prevalence and the distribution characteristics of HPV infection and its correlation with cervical lesions in southern Hunan Province. The comprehensive results of this survey can guide HPV vaccine research to protect against some common genotypes in China.

Abstract:Aim: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common cause of high-grade lesions and carcinogenesis such as cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and cervical cancer (CC). The prevalence and genotype distribution of HPV infection varies greatly in different geographical areas. Patients & methods: This study enrolled 92,932 patients from January 2017 to December 2021 and analyzed the prevalence and distribution of HPV genotypes. Results: 18038 (19.41%) specimens were HPV-positive. No significant difference in infection rates between men and women (19.05 vs 19.41%). The most prevalent HPV subtypes are HPV52, HPV58, HPV16, HPV53, HPV51 and HPV81. Single infection of HPV has dominated in HPV-positive patients. Conclusion: Our results show that the prevalence and distribution of HPV subtypes have obvious region-specific and age-specific characteristics.

Abstract:Background Human papillomavirus (HPV) screening and vaccination exert efficacy in controlling the progression of cervical cancer. Thus, examinations into HPV prevalence, age‐stratified specificity, genotype distribution, and their correlation with pathological outcomes can furnish robust evidence for customizing high‐quality population screening and management. Methods A cohort of 17,923 women attending clinics in the Jintang area, Sichuan, from January 2019 through August 2023 were enrolled in the study. Genotyping of HPV was conducted using real‐time polymerase chain reaction (RT‐PCR). The epidemiology and the relationship between HPV infection and histologic/cytologic abnormalities were subjected to analysis. Results HPV infection was identified in 4387 women. The outpatient group exhibited a significantly higher HPV infection rate compared to the healthy examination group (26.5% vs. 17.5%, p 60 years of age. The 31–40 age group demonstrated the lowest prevalence of infection, but upon infection, its prevalence of the precancerous lesion CIN2‐3 reached a maximum of 29.0%, constituting a novel finding. The most prevalent genotype was HPV52, followed by HPV16, 58, 53, 68, and 18. In the cytologic and histologic abnormalities group, the most common types were HPV52, 16, and 58. HPV16 predominantly appeared in high‐grade intraepithelial neoplasia and carcinoma in situ, constituting over 60% of cases. While HPV type 52 was not individually detected in cervical cancer cases. And some other non‐vaccine‐covered HPV subtypes also showed high prevalence in Sichuan. The single infection rates of NH9‐HPV (high‐risk HPV subtypes covered by the non‐nine‐valent vaccine) in CIN2‐3 and cervical cancer patients were 6.5% and 2.6%, respectively. Among them, HPV51, HPV53, HPV59, and HPV35 exhibited a significant preponderance, which even higher than HPV45 and HPV31 covered by the nine‐valent vaccine types. And in NL9‐HPV (low‐risk HPV subtypes covered by the non‐nine‐valent vaccine), HPV42 accounted for the highest percentage in CIN2‐3. A similar decreasing trend was observed in annual infection rates in the healthy examination population and in the 31–40 and 51–60 age groups, while the ≤20 age group showed an increase. Regarding type‐specificity, HPV16 and HPV58 exhibited the most rapid declines. Conclusion This study furnishes the latest insights into the characteristics of HPV infection rate, age distribution, and genotype prevalence in Sichuan.
