Abstract:Copper-based nanoparticles (NPs) display a strong potential to replace copper salts (e.g., CuSO4) for application in agricultures as antimicrobial agents or nutritional amendments. Yet, their effects on crop quality are still not comprehensively understood. In this study, the Cu contents in soybeans grown in soils amended with Cu NPs and CuSO4 at 100-500 mg Cu/kg and the subsequent effects on the plant physiological markers were determined. The Cu NPs induced 29-89% at the flowering stage (on Day 40) and 100-165% at maturation stage (on Day 100) more Cu accumulation in soybeans than CuSO4. The presence of particle aggregates in the root cells with deformation upon the Cu NP exposure was observed by transmission electron microscopy. The Cu NPs at 100 and 200 mg/kg significantly improved the plant height and biomass, yet significantly inhibited at 500 mg/kg, compared to the control. In leaves chlorophyll-b was more sensitive than chlorophyll-a and carotenoids to the Cu NP effect. The Cu NPs significantly decreased the root nitrogen and phosphorus contents, while they significantly increased the leaf potassium content in comparison with control. Our results imply that cautious use of Cu NPs in agriculture is warranted due to relatively high uptake of Cu and altered nutrient quality in soybeans.

Abstract:The wide use of metal-based nanoparticles (MNPs) will inevitably lead to their release into soil, and consequently affect the quality and ecological functions of soil environments. In this study, two paddy soils with different properties were exposed to CuO NPs to evaluate the transformation of CuO NPs and their effects on soil properties and components. The results of single chemical extraction and X-ray absorption fine structure analysis showed that CuO NPs could release Cu ions once being applied into the flooding paddy soil and then progress toward the more stable forms (Cu2S and Cu(OH)(2) ). CuO NPs could change the soil properties by increasing the pH and Eh of the lower organic matter-soil rather than those of the higher organic matter-soil. Furthermore, we found that the 1000 mg/kg CuO NPs could accelerate the degradation or mineralization of the organic matter, as well as the Fe reduction process, by increasing the Fe(II) content by 293% after flooding for 60 days in the lower organic matter soil. The microbial biomass in both soils was severely inhibited by CuO NPs and the organic matter could partly mitigate the negative effects of CuO NPs.

Abstract:Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) are widely used as fungicides in agriculture. Arsenic (As) is a ubiquitous contaminant in paddy soil. The present study was focused on the adsorption behavior of CuO NPs with regard to As as well as the characteristics of the microbial community changes in As-contaminated soil-rice systems in response to CuO NPs. The study found that CuO NPs could be a temporary sink of As in soil; a high dose of CuO NPs promoted the release of As from crystalline iron oxide, which increased the As content in the liquid phase. The study also found that the As bioavailability changed significantly when the dose of CuO NPs was higher than 50 mg kg-1 in the soil-rice system. The addition of 100 mg kg-1 CuO NPs increased the microbial diversity and the abundance of genes involved in As cycling, decreased the abundance of Fe(III)-reducing bacteria and sulfate-reducing genes, and decreased As accumulation in grains. Treatment with 500 mg kg-1 CuO NPs increased the abundance of Fe(III)-reducing bacteria and sulfate-reducing genes, decreased Fe plaques, and increased As accumulation in rice. The adverse effects of CuO NPs on crops and associated risks need to be considered carefully.
Regulatory Mechanism of Copper Oxide Nanoparticles on Uptake of Different Species of Arsenic in Rice.

Abstract:Copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) are widely used as a fungicide in agriculture. The application of CuO NPs in agriculture affects the growth of rice and metal accumulation in rice. However, the mechanism of CuO NPs on arsenic (As) accumulation in rice remains unclear. In this study, a hydroponic culture was produced to investigate the mechanism of the effect of 50 and 100 mg L-1 CuO NPs on As accumulation in rice. Our results showed that CuO NPs decreased As(III/V) accumulation in the roots and shoots by adsorbing As(III/V), oxidizing of As(III) on the surface, and thickening the root cell wall. The addition of CuO NPs regulated the expression of the OsNIP1;1, OsHAC1;1, and OsHAC4 genes, which decreased As(III) transport and promoted As(V) reduction in the roots. Moreover, when CuO NPs were co-exposed to As, a negative correlation between the concentration of Cu and As in rice was also found in our study. However, CuO NPs significantly increased Cu accumulation in rice and constrained the rice growth. In conclusion, CuO NPs might be a promising way to decrease As accumulation in rice, but the negative effects such as growth inhibition should be further considered. Therefore, the application of CuO NPs in rice plants should take a more restrained approach.
Transport and Retention of Copper Oxide Nanoparticles under Unfavorable Deposition Conditions Caused by Repulsive Van Der Waals Force in Saturated Porous Media.

Abstract:Currently, copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) have been widely used in industry, manufacturing and agriculture. The transport and retention of CuO NPs are vital to understanding the fate as well as the life cycle of CuO NPs in the environment. This study systematically investigates the transport and retention of CuO NPs in saturated porous media, and the experimental results were explained by the CFT and DLVO theory. The van der Waals force between CuO NPs and collector was repulsive, resulting in the unfavorable deposition condition. Column experiments were conducted with saturated quartz sand under environmentally relevant pH (6, 8, 9), ionic strength (IS, 1, 10, 50 mM), and humic acid (HA, 0.1-10 mg-C/mL). Experimental results show that the breakthrough curves (BCTs) were affected by different pH and IS. Under pH 6 and 9, the mobility of CuO NPs was enhanced by high IS while the mobility was inhibited by high IS under pH 8. The mobility of CuO NPs was enhanced by humic acid and the effect was best at 0.5 mg-C/mL HA. The experimental results were successfully explained by CFT and DLVO theory, the main mechanisms were aggregation of CuO NPs, interaction energy and collision between CuO NPs and collector. In general, these findings can improve our understanding of the transport and retention of CuO NPs in subsurface environments, and suggest pH, IS, HA may be key factors governing mobility and stability of CuO NPs in natural environment. Influence of Sulfur Fertilization on CuO Nanoparticles Migration and Transformation in Soil Pore Water from the Rice (oryza Sativa L.) Rhizosphere.

Abstract:The biogeochemical cycling of sulfur in soil is closely associated with the mobility and bioavailability of heavy metals; however the influence of sulfur on the behavior of metal-based nanoparticles has not yet been studied. The influence of S fertilizer (S0 and Na2SO4) applied in paddy soils on CuO NPs behavior in soil pore water was explored in the present study. Synchrotron-based techniques were applied to investigate the migration and speciation transformation of CuO NPs in soil pore water colloids. The application of sulfur fertilizer increased the zeta potential of soil colloids from the rice rhizosphere region and reduced the size of the colloids. Sulfur fertilization decreased the concentration of Cu in soil pore water in the rice rhizosphere region. S0 fertilizer reduced the Cu concentration in soil colloids (by 55.8%-73.5%), while Na2SO4 increased the Cu concentration in soil colloids (by 173.8%-265.1%). Sulfur fertilization changed the spatial distribution of Fe3+ and Cu2+ in colloids, making these ions more likely to be aggregated on the edges of soil colloids. Speciation transformation of CuO NPs happened during the process of migration. The main Cu speciation in the soil colloids were CuO NPs, Cu-Cysteine, Cu2S and Cu-Citrate. Sulfur fertilization increased the proportion of Cu2S (by 40.5%) in soil pore water colloids from the rice rhizosphere region, while the proportion of CuO NPs was reduced (by 18.4%). Sulfur fertilization changed the morphology and elementary composition of colloids in soil pore water, thus influencing the migration of CuO NPs in the soil column through soil colloids.

Abstract:Many studies have shown the effect of solution chemistry on the environmental behavior of metal-based nanoparticles (NPs), except CuO NPs. Here, we investigated the agglomeration, sedimentation, dissolution, and speciation of CuO NPs by varying pH, ionic strength, ionic valence, and natural organic matter (NOM). The results showed that as the pH moved away from 6, the size of CuO agglomerates decreased, along with the enhanced NP suspension stabilization, due to the increase of electrostatic repulsive force. Increasing ionic strength and valence intensified the agglomeration and sedimentation of CuO NPs because of the compression of electrical double layers. The presence of humic acid and citric acid enhanced the dispersion and stabilization of CuO NP suspension, but l-cysteine showed a different impact. Decreasing pH, increasing ionic strength and all NOM improved the dissolution of CuO NPs, but the divalent electrolyte (CaCl2) inhibited the Cu2+ release from CuO NPs compared to the monovalent electrolyte (NaCl). In addition, X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) analysis demonstrated that the presence of l-cysteine transformed more than 30% of CuO NPs to Cu(I)-cysteine by coordinating with thiol group. This study can give us an in-depth understanding on the environmental behavior and fate of CuO NPs in the aquatic environment.

Abstract:Agricultural soil is gradually becoming a primary sink for metal -based nanoparticles (MNPs). The uptake and accumulation of MNPs by crops may contaminate food chain and pose unexpected risks for human health. Here, we investigated the fate and transformation of CuO nano particles (NPs) in the soil -rice system during the rice lifecycle. The results show that at the maturation stage, 1000 mg/kg CuO NPs significantly decreased redox potential by 202.75 triV but enhanced electrical conductivity by 497.07 mS/cm compared to controls. Moreover, the bioavailability of highest CuO NPs in the soil was reduced by 69.84% along with the plant growth but then was significantly increased' y 165% after drying -wetting cycles. Meanwhile, CuO and Cu coMbined with humic acid were transformed to Cu2S and Cu associated with goethite by X-ray absorption near edge structure analysis. AdditiOnally, CuO NPs had an acute negative effect on the plant growth than bulk particles, which dramatically reduced the fresh weight of grains to 6.51% of controls. Notably, CuO NPs were found to be translocated from soil to plant especially to the chaff and promoted the Cu accumulation in the aleurone layer of rice using micro X-ray fluorescence technique, but could not reach the polished rice.
Assessing the Impacts of Cu(OH)2 Nanopesticide and Ionic Copper on the Soil Enzyme Activity and Bacterial Community

Abstract:Nanopesticides are being introduced in agriculture, and the associated environmental risks and benefits must be carefully assessed before their widespread agricultural applications. We investigated the impacts of a commercial Cu(OH)2 nanopesticide formulation (NPF) at different agricultural application doses (e.g., 0.5, 5, and 50 mg of Cu kg-1) on enzyme activities and bacterial communities of loamy soil (organic matter content of 3.61%) over 21 days. Results were compared to its ionic analogue (i.e., CuSO4) and nano-Cu(OH)2, including both the commercial unformulated active ingredient of NPF (AI-NPF) and synthesized Cu(OH)2 nanorods (NR). There were negligible changes in the activity of acid phosphatase, regardless of exposure dose, whereas significant (p < 0.05) variations in activities of invertase, urease, and catalase were observed at a dose of 5 mg kg-1 or higher. Invertase activity decreased with an increasing bioavailable Cu concentration in soil under various treatments. In comparison to CuSO4, both Cu(OH)2 nanopesticide (i.e., NPF) and nano-Cu(OH)2 (i.e., AI-NPF and NR) caused a significant (p < 0.05) inhibition of urease activity, wherein a significant (p < 0.05) increase in the activity of catalase was observed, representing serious oxidative stress. Accordingly, NPF, AI-NPF, and NR differently affected soil bacterial abundance, diversity, and community compared to CuSO4, which could have resulted from the changes in the bioavailable Cu concentration as a result of the distinct nature of copper spiked (i.e., nano form versus salt). Moreover, minor differences in the soil enzyme activity and bacterial community were observed between NPF and AI-NPF, reflecting that the impact of the Cu(OH)2 nanopesticide was primarily attributed to the presence of nano-Cu(OH)2. In total, the impacts of nano-Cu(OH)2 on the soil bacterial community and enzyme activity tested in this study differed from CuSO4, shedding light on the environmental risks of the Cu(OH)2 nanopesticide in the long run.

Abstract:The effects of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) on heavy metal fate and biotoxicity in farmland soil are mostly unknown. A flooding–drying simulation experiment was conducted to study the effects of three typical metal oxide nanoparticles (TiO2-NPs, ZnO-NPs and CuO-NPs) on the chemical speciation of heavy metals and micronutrient bioavailability in paddy soil. The results showed that the addition of ZnO-NPs and CuO-NPs caused significant increases in soil pH, Eh and EC after a 90-d flooding–drying process. ZnO-NPs and CuO-NPs addition caused clearly increase in the Zn and Cu concentrations in the acid-soluble fraction, Fe/Mn oxides-bound fraction and organic-bound fraction, leading to higher bioavailability in the soil. DTPA-extractable Zn and Cu increased to 184.6 mg kg−1 and 145.3 mg kg−1 in the maximum ZnO-NPs and CuO-NPs concentration treatments (500 mg kg−1). TiO2-NPs promoted the transformation of Mn from a Fe/Mn oxides-bound fraction to an acid-soluble fraction. Soil Cd bioavailability obviously decreased in the TiO2-NPs treatment but increased in the ZnO-NPs and CuO-NPs treatments.

Abstract:The rhizosphere is an essential pathway for the uptake of metal-based nanoparticles (MNPs) by plant roots. However, the interaction between root exudates and MNPs is still unclear. In this study, we initially identified the major low-molecular-weight organic acids (LMWOAs) in the rice root exudates using hydroponics. Then, the individual LMWOAs were added to CuO nanoparticle suspensions to investigate their effects on the environmental behavior of the MNPs. The results showed that both the variety and the concentration of LMWOAs impacted the aggregation, sedimentation, and dissolution of CuO nanoparticles (NPs). Almost all LMWOAs except succinic acid inhibited the aggregation of CuO NPs by enhancing the electrostatic repulsive force between NPs. The presence of citric and oxalic acids rather than lactic acid greatly improved the stability of CuO NP suspensions, but other acids showed a low promoting and high inhibiting effect on NP sedimentation. Moreover, all the LMWOAs from root exudates facilitated the dissolution of CuO NPs with a positive dose-dependent correlation, especially formic acid. Notably, citric acid, as the most abundant LMWOAs in rice root exudates, largely determined the aggregation, sedimentation, and dissolution of CuO NPs. This study provides a better understanding on NP–plant interactions in the rhizosphere.
Impact on Some Soil Physical and Chemical Properties Caused by Metal and Metallic Oxide Engineered Nanoparticles: A Review

Abstract:In recent years, the release of metal and metallic oxide engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) into the environment has generated an increase in their accumulation in agricultural soils, which is a serious risk to the ecosystem and soil health. Here, we show the impact of ENPs on the physical and chemical properties of soils. A literature search was performed in the Scopus database using the keywords ENPs, plus soil physical properties or soil chemical properties, and elements availability. In general, we found that the presence of metal and metallic oxide ENPs in soils can increase hydraulic conductivity and soil porosity and reduce the distance between soil particles, as well as causing a variation in pH, cation exchange capacity (CEC), electrical conductivity (EC), redox potential (Eh), and soil organic matter (SOM) content. Furthermore, ENPs or the metal cations released from them in soils can interact with nutrients like phosphorus (P) forming complexes or precipitates, decreasing their bioavailability in the soil solution. The results depend on the soil properties and the doses, exposure duration, concentrations, and type of ENPs. Therefore, we suggest that particular attention should be paid to every kind of metal and metallic oxide ENPs deposited into the soil.
Laboratory Assessment of the Mobility of Water-Dispersed Engineered Nanoparticles in A Red Soil (Ultisol)

Abstract:Soils are major sinks of engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) as results of land applications of sewage sludge, accidental spills, or deliberate applications of ENPs (e.g., nano-pesticides). In this study, the transport behaviors of four widely used ENPs (i.e., titanium dioxide [TiO2], buckminsterfullerene [C-60], single-walled carbon nanotube [SWNT], and elemental silver [Ag-0]) were investigated in water-saturated columns packed with either a quartz sand, a red soil (Ultisol), or sand/soil mixtures with soil mass fraction (lambda) from 0% to 100% at slightly acidic solution pH (4.0-5.0). The mobility of tested ENPs decreased significantly with increasing lambda, which was attributed to increased surface area and/or retention sites imparted by iron oxides, clay minerals, and organic matter in the red soil. Breakthrough curves of all ENPs exhibited blocking effects (decreasing deposition rate over time) and were well-described using an unfavorable and favorable, two-site kinetic attachment model accounting for random sequential adsorption on the favorable site. Modeled maximum retention capacity and first-order attachment rate coefficient on the favorable site both increased linearly with increasing lambda, suggesting that transport parameters of ENPs in natural soils may be accurately extrapolated from transport parameters in the sand/soil mixtures. In addition, the mobility of three negatively charged ENPs (C-60, SWNT, and Ag-0 NPs) was reversely correlated with their average hydrodynamic diameters, highlighting that the average hydrodynamic diameter of negatively charged ENPs is the dominant physicochemical characteristics controlling their mobility in the Ultisol. Genotype-phenotype correlations in spastic paraplegia type 7: a study in a large Dutch cohort.

Abstract:Spastic paraplegia type 7 is an autosomal recessive neurodegenerative disorder mainly characterized by progressive bilateral lower limb spasticity and referred to as a form of hereditary spastic paraplegia. Additional disease features may also be observed as part of a more complex phenotype. Many different mutations have already been identified, but no genotype-phenotype correlations have been found so far. From a total of almost 800 patients referred for testing, we identified 60 patients with mutations in the SPG7 gene. We identified 14 previously unreported mutations and detected a high recurrence rate of several earlier reported mutations. We were able to collect detailed clinical data for 49 patients, who were ranked based on a pure versus complex phenotype, ataxia versus no ataxia and missense versus null mutations. A generally complex phenotype occurred in 69% of all patients and was associated with a younger age at onset (trend with P = 0.07). Ataxia was observed in 57% of all patients. We found that null mutations were associated with the co-occurrence of cerebellar ataxia (trend with P = 0.06). The c.1409 G > A (p.Arg470Gln) mutation, which was found homozygously in two sibs, was associated with a specific complex phenotype that included predominant visual loss due to optical nerve atrophy. Neuropathology in one of these cases showed severe degeneration of the optic system, with less severe degeneration of the ascending tracts of the spinal cord and cerebellum. Other disease features encountered in this cohort included cervical dystonia, vertical gaze palsy, ptosis and severe intellectual disability. In this large Dutch cohort, we seem to have identified the first genotype-phenotype correlation in spastic paraplegia type 7 by observing an association between the cerebellar phenotype of spastic paraplegia type 7 and SPG7 null alleles. An overlapping phenotypic presentation with its biological counterpart AFG3L2, which when mutated causes spinocerebellar ataxia type 28, is apparent and possibly suggests that abnormal levels of the SPG7 protein impact the function of the mitochondrial ATPases associated with diverse cellular activities-protease complex (formed by SPG7 and AFG3L2) in the cerebellum. In addition, a missense mutation in exon 10 resulted in predominant optical nerve atrophy, which might suggest deleterious interactions of this SPG7 variant with its substrate OPA1, the mutated gene product in optic atrophy type 1. Functional studies are required to further investigate these interactions.

This study investigated the dynamic influences of three iron-based NPs (Fe-0, Fe3O4, and Fe2O3) applied into a red soil (RS) and a Wushan soil (WS) with different application rates (2 to 6 g kg(-1)) on soil physicochemical properties such as pH, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), available ammonium nitrogen (NH4+-N), available phosphorus (AP), and enzymatic activities. The results showed that the addition of Fe-0 NPs increased DOC and available NH4+-N, but significantly decreased AP, while Fe3O4 and Fe2O3 NPs slightly reduced soil pH in both soils and significantly declined available NH4+-N in the WS and AP in the RS. No significant difference was observed between the effects of Fe3O4 and Fe2O3 NPs on soil properties except AP in the RS. All iron-based NPs decreased the activities of urease and acid phosphatase in both soils. The effects on soil physicochemical properties, especially available NH4+-N and AP induced by iron-based NPs, varied greatly with soil types. These results implied that cautions should be paid for the environmental application of iron-based NPs, especially iron oxide NPs in soils.

Abstract:Adsorption and desorption of Cu(II), Zn(II), Pb(II) and Cd(II) on a Red soil (RS, Udic Ferrosols) and a Wushan soil (WS, Anthrosol) amended with nanoscale hydroxyapatite (nano‐HAP) were studied by batch experiments. The adsorption isotherms show that different kinds of heavy metals had different affinity to the soils in the order of Cu(II) > Pb(II) > Cd(II) > Zn(II). The amount of each heavy metal adsorbed on the RS was lower than that on the WS, because the former had lower CEC and pH than the latter. The amendment of nano‐HAP in the soils significantly enhanced the adsorption of heavy metals, in comparison with the treatment receiving no nano‐HAP. The Kf, simulated from the adsorption isotherms, increased from 78 to 2180 for Cu(II), 16.6 to 59.5 for Zn(II), and 17.9 to174 for Cd(II) on the RS, and from 995 to 6410 for Cu(II), 52.5 to 92.4 for Zn(II), and 59.2 to 199 for Cd(II) on the WS, when 0.20 g nano‐HAP was added into 1.00 g soil. The nano‐HAP remarkably inhibited desorption of heavy metals from the soils, suggesting that the addition of nano‐HAP can significantly reduce the mobilization of heavy metals and increase their geochemical stability in metal contaminated soils. © 2009 American Institute of Chemical Engineers Environ Prog, 2010
Copper oxide nanoparticles inhibited denitrifying enzymes and electron transport system activities to influence soil denitrification and N2O emission

Abstract:Nanopesticides are widely applied in modern agricultural systems to replace traditional pesticides, which inevitably leads to their accumulation in soils. Nanopesticides based on copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) may affect the soil nitrogen cycle, such as the denitrification process; however, the mechanism remains unclear. Here, acute exposure experiments for 60 h were conducted to explore the effects of CuO NPs (10, 100, 500 mg kg-1) on denitrification. In this study, Cu speciation, activities of denitrifying enzymes, electron transport system activity (ETSA), expression of denitrifying functional genes, composition of bacterial communities and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were determined. In all treatments, Cu ions was the dominant form and responsible for the toxicity of CuO NPs. The results indicated that CuO NPs treatments at 500 mg kg-1 remarkably inhibited denitrification, led to an 11-fold increase in NO3- accumulation and N2O emission rates decrease by 10.2-24.1%. In the denitrification process, the activities of nitrate reductase and nitric oxide reductase reduced by 21.1-42.1% and 10.3-16.3%, respectively, which may be a reason for the negative effect of CuO NPs. In addition, ETSA was significantly inhibited with CuO NPs applications, which reflects the ability of denitrification to accept electrons. Denitrifying functional genes and bacterial communities composition were changed, thus further influencing the denitrification process. ROS analysis showed that there were no significant differences among NPs treatments. This research improves the understanding of CuO NPs impact on soil denitrification. Further attention should be paid to the nitrogen transformation in agricultural soils in the presence of nanopesticides.
Comparative Ecotoxicity of Nanometer-, Micrometer-Sized CuO and Ionic Copper to Soil Urease

Abstract:To explore the ecotoxicology of nanometer-and micrometer-sized CuO to soil urease activity,the release of Cu2+ from CuO and their effects on inhibiting urease activity have been investigated.The results show that the release of Cu2+ from CuO nanoparticles(CuO NPs) and CuO micrometer-sized particles(CuO MPs)increased with increasing particle concentrations,while the releasing ratio to CuO was decreased.Both of Cu2+ release and its ratio to CuO was higher in Red soil(RS,Udic Ferrosols) than that in Wushan soil(WS,Anthrosol).In the concentration range of 1~1000mg CuO NPs·L-1(calculated by Cu concentration),soil urease activity was significantly(p≤0.05 and p≤0.01) inhibited by CuO NPs.In addition,both of Cu2+ release and inhibition of urease activity induced by CuO NPs were greater than those by CuO MPs with the same concentration.When the concentration of CuO NPs was relatively low(1~10mg·kg-1 in RS and 1~100mg·kg-1 in WS),the nanoparticulate determined the ecotoxicity on urease activity.Whereas,the combined effects of released Cu2+ and nanoparticulate were dominated the inhibition of urease activity when the concentration of CuO NPs was relatively high(≥50mg·kg-1 in RS,≥500mg·kg-1 in WS).It was different from CuO NPs that the inhibition of urease activity caused by CuO MPs only through the release of Cu2+.It should be noted that 1mg·kg-1 CuO NPs significantly(p≤0.05)inhibited urease activity,while the effects of CuO MPs and Cu2+ showed nothing there.It indicates that there would be unique mechanism for the effects of nanoparticulate CuO on soil enzyme,and further work is required to be done to clarify details.
Transport and Retention of Silver Nanoparticles in Soil: Effects of Input Concentration, Particle Size and Surface Coating

Abstract:Soils are considered as a major sink for engineered nanoparticles (ENPs) because of their inevitable release to the subsurface environment during production, transportation, use and disposal processes. In this context, the transport and retention of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) with different input particle concentration, particle size, and surface coating were investigated in clay loam using water-saturated column experiments. Our results showed that the mobility of AgNPs in the soil was considerably low, and >73.9% of total injected AgNPs (except for no coating condition) was retained in columns. This is primarily due to the high specific surface area and favorable retention sites in soil. Increased transport of AgNPs occurred at higher input concentration and smaller particle size. The presence of surface coatings (i.e., polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and citrate) further promoted the transport and reduced the retention of AgNPs in soil, which is likely due to their effective blocking of the solid-phase sites that are originally available for AgNPs retention. Although the shape of retention profiles (RPs) of AgNPs was either hyperexponential or nonmonotonic that is different from the colloid filtration theory prediction, the 1-species (consider both time- and depth-dependent retention) and/or 2-species (account for the release of reversibly deposited AgNPs) model successfully described the transport behaviors of AgNPs in soil columns under all the investigated conditions. This study proves the applicability of mathematical model in predicting the fate and transport of ENPs in real soils, and our findings presented herein are significant to ultimately develop management strategies for reducing the potential risks of groundwater contamination due to ENPs entering the environment.

Abstract:Due to the potential for interactions between crop plants and engineered nanomaterials (ENMs), there is increasing interest in understanding the bioavailability and effects of ENMs released into soil systems. Here, we investigate the influence of root exudates on the fate of ENMs from a thermodynamic perspective. Nano isothermal titration calorimetry was applied to determine thermodynamic parameters for the interaction between nanocopper (nCu) and synthetic root exudate (SRE) and its components (including sugars, organic acids, amino acids, and phenolic acids), as well as Cu2+ and SRE. The measured binding constant (K-d = 5.645 x 10(3) M-1) indicated strong interactions between nCu particles and SRE, as well as with individual organic acids. The interaction between Cu2+ and SRE was stronger (K-d = 7.181 x 10(4) M-1) but varies for the individual SRE components. nCu dissolution in the presence of SRE was the predominant interaction. In addition, SRE resulted in a complex transformation of nCu, where Cu2+, Cu+, and Cu-0 were formed via oxidation and reduction. Plant-nCu exposure experiments indicate that the binding of SRE with nCu and dissolved Cu ions can significantly decrease Cu uptake and bioaccumulation in plants. nITC provides a fundamental thermodynamic understanding of interactions between nCu and plant root exudates, providing an important tool, for understanding plant NP-interactions.
