Abstract:The micellization characteristics of nonionic surfactant (Triton TX-100, p-octyl polyethylene glycol phenyl ether) and two anionic surface active ionic liquids (SAILs) were investigated by surface tension measurements, steady state fluorescence tests, dynamic light scattering (DLS), H-Nuclear magnetic resonance, and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The anionic SAILs were 1-ethoxycarbonyl-3-methylimidazolium dodecyl sulfate ([Etmim][C12H25SO4]) and 1-ethoxycarbonyl-3-butylimidazolium dodecyl sulfate ([Etbim][C12H25SO4]). CMCmix values of SAIL/TX-100 mixtures were between CMC values of individual surfactants, and decreased with the increase of the molar fraction of TX-100. The negative beta values (interaction parameter) of SAIL/TX-100 mixtures indicated good synergistic effect amid SAIL/TX100 mixtures. [Etbim][C12H25SO4] showed stronger attractive interactions than [Etmim][C12H25SO4] during SAIL/TX-100 micellization. The mixed micelles contained a larger molar fraction of TX-100 over the entire range of composition. At same molar fraction of TX-100, X-1 values of [Etbim][C12H25SO4]/TX-100 mixtures were lower than those of [Etmim][C12H25SO4]/TX-100 mixtures. With addition of SAIL, the particle sizes of SAIL/TX-100 micelles decreased. With the increase of SAIL concentrations, the particle sizes of SAIL/TX-100 micelles decreased. In presence of SAILs ([Etmim][C12H25SO4] or [Etbim][C12H25SO4]), all protons of TX-100 moved downfield. The chemical shifts of protons in [Etmim][C12H25SO4] or [Etbim][C12H25SO4] slightly moved upfield. DFT simulations demonstrated the presence of hydrogen bonds between the imidazolium cation of SAILs and EO chain of TX-100, and between sulfate anion group(-SO4-) of SAILs and hydrogen atoms in TX-100. Phase Diagrams and Formulation Mechanism of Microemulsions with Hydroxyl Group Functional Anionic Surface Active Ionic Liquids

Abstract:One functional hydroxyl group-containing anionic surface active ionic liquids (SAILs), 1-(3-hydroxypropyl)-3-methylimidazolium dodecyl sulfate ([MPmim][DS]) and 1-(3-hydroxypropyl)-3-butylimidazolium dodecyl sulfate ([MPbim][DS]) were synthesized and characterized with (HNMR)-H-1, (CNMR)-C-13, FT-IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and elemental analysis. The critical micellar concentration (CMC) values of [MPmim][DS] and [MPbim][DS] were obtained through measurements of surface tension and electrical conductivity. The capability of [MPmim][DS] and [MPbim][DS] to form microemulsions was assessed. The influence of the hydroxyl group of imidazolium cation on microemulsion formulation was elucidated using Density functional theory (DFT) simulations. Critical micellar concentration (CMC) values for [MPbim][DS] and [MPmim][DS] are 0.51 mmol/L and 0.99 mmol/L, respectively. The micellization processes of [MPbim][DS] and [MPmim][DS] are spontaneous, endothermic, and entropy-driven. [MPmim][DS] or [MPbim][DS] as surfactant, ethyl laurate microemulsions are formulated. The single-phase region area (S-ME) percent of ethyl laurate microemulsions are 60% and 66%. The single-phase region area percent of different microemulsions follows the trend: [MPbim][DS] > [MPmim][DS]. Introducing the functional hydroxyl group into the imidazolium cation significantly expands the S-ME area of microemulsions. DFT simulations are employed to analyze hydrogen bonding and electronic energy interactions among cations, DS anion, [MPmim][DS], [MPbim][DS], and ethyl laurate. Two types of hydrogen bonds are formed in [MPmim][DS] or [MPbim][DS], as C-H & mldr;O, and O-H & mldr;O. In [MPmim][DS], the hydroxyl group of imidazolium cation participates in the formation of a strong hydrogen bond with DS anion, exemplified by strong hydrogen bond O18-H19 & mldr;O64 (1.972 & Aring;). These advancements offer critical insights into the design of surface active ionic liquids, enhancing their functional properties and broadening the potential for innovative microemulsion applications in various industries.
Phase Behavior and Microstructures in a Mixture of Anionic Gemini and Cationic Surfactants.

Abstract:We report in this work the phase behavior and microstructures in a mixture of an anionic Gemini surfactant, sodium dilauramino cystine (SDLC), and a conventional cationic surfactant, dodecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DTAC). Observation of the appearance shows that the phase behavior of the SDLC-DTAC mixed cationic surfactant system transforms from an isotropic homogeneous phase to an aqueous surfactant two-phase system (ASTP) and then to an anisotropic homogeneous phase with the continuous addition of DTAC. The corresponding aggregate microstructures are investigated by rheology, dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy and polarization microscopy. It has been found that a wormlike micelle, in the isotropic homogeneous phase, occurs linear to the branch growth. The aggregate microstructures in the ASTP lower and upper phases are branched wormlike micelles and vesicles, respectively. The micelle transformed into a vesicle upon varying the phase volume percentage until a lamellar liquid crystal formed in the anisotropic homogeneous phase. The macroscopic phase behavior and microscopic aggregate structure are related to the understanding of the possible mechanisms for the above phenomena.

Abstract:yy Two anionic surface active ionic liquids (SAILs), 3-methyl-1-ethoxycarbonylimidazolium decanesulfonate ([Etmim][C10H21SO3]) and 3-methyl-1-ethoxycarbonylimidazolium dodecanesulfonate ([Etmim] [C12H25SO3]) were synthesized and studied. The surface properties, aggregation properties and thermodynamic parameters of [Etmim][C10H21SO3] and [Etmim][C12H25SO3] aqueous solutions were determined using surface tension and electrical conductivity. Micelle formation of [Etmim][C10H21SO3] and [Etmim][C12H25SO3] was spontaneous and entropy-driven. Density functional theory (DFT) calculation was used to optimize the configuration of the anions (C10H21SO3, and C12H25SO3), imidazolium cation ([Etmim](+)), and SAILs ([Etmim][C10H21SO3] or [Etmim] [C12H25SO3]) with different number of water molecules (1-3) using Gaussian 16 at B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) level. Typical hydrogen bonds, bond length changes, bond angle changes, and charge changes of typical atoms in hydrated complexes were analyzed. For imidazolium cation hydrates, H2O formed two types of hydrogen bonds with cation ([Etmim](+)). For sulfonate anion hydrates, H2O formed two types of hydrogen bonds with anions ([C10H21SO3]- or [C12H25SO3]-). Hydrogen atoms in H2O formed hydrogen bonds with oxygen atoms of polar sulfonate anions in three ways: 1:1, 2:1, and 2:1. The typical electron withdrawing atoms (N and O) in imidazolium cation was beneficial for the micelles formation. The electrostatic repulsion and electrostatic attractive interaction between polar groups of SAILs affected the CMC values of [Etmim][C10H21SO3] or [Etmim][C12H25SO3] aqueous solutions. Binding energy (D-0), difference of binding energy (Delta D-0) of sulfonate ion hydrates and SAIL hydrates confirmed the tendency of [Etmim][C12H25SO3] micelle formation was higher than that of [Etmim][C10H21SO3]. Influence of electrostatics on the oxidation rates of organic compounds in heterogeneous Fenton systems.

Abstract:Electrostatic effects influence the oxidation rates of charged dissolved organic compounds in systems where the hydroxyl radical (*OH) is produced by the iron oxide-catalyzed decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Experiments were performed using goethite and the *OH probes 14C-labeled formic acid, 2-chlorophenol (2-CP), and nitrobenzene. At pH 4 and an ionic strength of 0.01 M, formic acid (pKa = 3.745) detected a steady-state concentration of *OH ([*OH]ss, calculated as a solution average) approximately 50 times higher than the two neutral probes did in the same systems, indicating significant enrichment of formate at the surface of the positively charged iron oxide where the *OH is being produced. Increasing the pH and ionic strength decreased formic acid oxidation rates by factors consistent with predicted decreases in electrostatic effects. In the presence of high 2-CP concentrations, the [*OH]ss measured by formic acid decreased with time, and goethite coagulation increased, due to loss of positive charge on the oxide surface as the oxidation products of 2-CP complexed surface Fe species. The [*OH]ss detected by 2-CP did not change significantly, indicating that neither goethite coagulation nor surface complexation of 2-CP oxidation products interfered with the rate of *OH generation; however, such an effect could have occurred in experiments using dissolved Fe instead of goethite. Model predictions of organic compound oxidation rates in mineral-catalyzed Fenton-like systems were improved by taking electrostatic effects into account.
Effect of Alkyl Chain Length of Imidazolium Cations on Foam Properties of Anionic Surface Active Ionic Liquids: Experimental and DFT Studies

Abstract:Two anionic surface active ionic liquids (SAILs), 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium dodecyl sulfate ([Hmim] [C12H25SO4]) and 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium dodecyl sulfate ([Omim][C12H25SO4]) were synthesized using imidazolium ionic liquids (ILs) and sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). Foaming performances (foaming ability, foam stability, and foam composite index) of three SAILs ([Bmim][C12H25SO4], [Hmim][C12H25SO4], and [Omim][C12H25SO4]) were determined using Ross-Miles methods. The foaming abilities of SAILs followed the order: [Hmim][C12H25SO4] > [Bmim][C12H25SO4] > [Omim][C12H25SO4]. While the foam stabilities and foam composite index (FCI) of SAILs followed the order: [Omim][C12H25SO4] > [Hmim][C12H25SO4] > [Bmim][C12H25SO4]. The structure effect of three SAILs ([Bmim][C12H25SO4], [Hmim][C12H25SO4], and [Omim][C12H25SO4]) on foam performances were analyzed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Abstract:The study of ionic liquid mixtures has garnered growing attention due to its importance. However, our current understanding of molecular interactions in ionic liquid mixtures remains incomplete, necessitating further research to expand the foundational knowledge in this field. In this work, a comprehensive approach incorporating theoretical calculations and diverse experimental techniques was utilized to research the structures, dynamics, and interactions of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethansulfonate (BMIMTfO) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)amide (BMIMTFSI) mixtures. The obtained conclusions are as follows: (1) The primary interaction sites for [BMIM](+), [TfO](-) and [TFSI](-) were identified as the C2H, O atoms of SO3 and O atoms of SO, respectively. (2) With the addition of BMIMTFSI, the hydrogen bonding interactions associated with imidazolium CH are weakened, while those associated with alkyl CH and SO are strengthened. Additionally, there is an increased propensity for aggregation between the two anions ([TfO](-), [TFSI](-)) and [BMIM](+). (3) The interactions between [BMIM](+) and [TfO](-) are stronger compared to those between [BMIM](+) and [TFSI](-), and the self-diffusion coefficient followed the order of [BMIM](+) > [TFSI](-) > [TfO](-). (4) The 2[BMIM](+)[TfO](-), 2[BMIM](+)[TFSI](-)-[TfO](-), 2[BMIM](+)[TFSI](-) and 2[BMIM](+)[TfO](-)-[TFSI](-) complexes were assigned using excess spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations.
In-depth Study of the Phase Separation Behaviour of a Thermoresponsive Ionic Liquid and a Poly(ionic Liquid) in Concentrated Aqueous Solution.

Abstract:The temperature-induced phase transition behaviors of a thermoresponsive ionic liquid (tributylhexylphosphonium 3-sulfopropylmethacrylate, [P4,4,4,6][MC3S]) and its polymer (poly-tributylhexylphosphonium 3-sulfopropylmethacrylate, P[P4,4,4,6][MC3S]) have been investigated using DSC, optical microscopy, temperature-variable (1)H NMR, and FT-IR in combination with two-dimensional analysis methods, including perturbation correlation moving window (PCMW) and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2Dcos). We found that there exists a distribution gradient of water molecules in P[P4,4,4,6][MC3S] ranging from hydrophobic backbones to hydrophilic sulfonates. Linked together by covalent bonds, P[P4,4,4,6][MC3S] would form an "urchin-like" structure, which can improve its stability and strengthen the gradient distribution of water. Finally, 2Dcos was employed to elucidate the sequential order of chemical group motions during heating. It is concluded that both [P4,4,4,6][MC3S] and P[P4,4,4,6][MC3S] experience the anionic dominated phase transition process. Moreover, the driving force for the phase transitions is shown to be the dehydration of hydrophobic ester carbonyls.

Abstract:Ionic liquids (ILs) are potential green solvents with very broad application prospects. Their toxicity and other biological effects are largely related to their hydrophobic properties. In this work, the effects of two imidazolium-based ILs with either a butyl or a hexyl chain, [C(4)mim][OAc] or [C(6)mim][OAc], on the phase behaviours of a representative phospholipid, dipalmitoylphosphatidylcholine (DPPC), were examined using synchrotron small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering and differential scanning calorimetry techniques. A series of samples with a lipid : IL molar ratio ranging from 1 : 0 to 1 : 4/1 : 5 were prepared as aqueous dispersions in the form of multi-lamellar vesicles. The two ILs were found to have distinct effects on the phase behaviours of DPPC. For [C(4)mim][OAc], its effect is very limited. In contrast, for [C(6)mim][OAc], it could eliminate the pre-transition of DPPC, markedly affect the main phase transition of the lipid, and insert into the DPPC bilayer at gel state to form an interdigitated gel phase. The findings increased our understanding on the biological effects of imidazolium-based ILs and might shed light on the design of novel IL-based antimicrobials.
Effect of ion structure on the physicochemical properties and gas absorption of surface active ionic liquids

Abstract:Surface active ionic liquids (SAILs) combine useful characteristics of both ionic liquids (ILs) and surfactants, hence are promising candidates for a wide range of applications. However, the effect of SAIL ionic structures on their physicochemical properties remains unclear, which limits their uptake. To address this knowledge gap, in this work we investigated the density, viscosity, surface tension, and corresponding critical micelle concentration in water, as well as gas absorption of SAILs with a variety of cation and anion structures. SAILs containing anions with linear alkyl chains have smaller molar volumes than those with branched alkyl chains, because linear alkyl chains are interdigitated to a greater extent, leading to more compact packing. This interdigitation also results in SAILs being about two orders of magnitude more viscous than comparable conventional ILs. SAILs at the liquid-air interface orient alkyl chains towards the air, leading to low surface tensions closer to n-alkanes than conventional ILs. Critical temperatures of about 900 K could be estimated for all SAILs from their surface tensions. When dissolved in water, SAILs adsorb at the liquid-air interface and lower the surface tension, like conventional surfactants in water, after which micelles form. Molecular simulations show that the micelles are spherical and that lower critical micelle concentrations correspond to the formation of aggregates with a larger number of ion pairs. $\mathrm{CO_{2}}$ and $\mathrm{N_{2}}$ absorption capacities are examined and we conclude that ionic liquids with larger non-polar domains absorb larger quantities of both gases.

Water confined in self-assembled ionic surfactants nano-structures

Abstract:We present a coarse-grained model for ionic surfactants in explicit aqueous solutions, and study by computer simulation both the impact of water content on the morphology of the system, and the consequent effect of the formed interfaces on the structural features of the adsorbed fluid. On increasing the hydration level at ambient conditions, the model exhibits a series of three distinct phases: lamellar, cylindrical and micellar. We characterize the different structures in terms of diffraction patterns and neutron scattering static structure factors. We demonstrate that the rate of variation of the nano-metric sizes of the self-assembled water domains shows peculiar changes in the different phases. We also analyse in depth the structure of the water/confining matrix interfaces, the implications of their tunable degree of curvature, and the properties of water molecules in the different restricted environments. Finally, we discuss our results compared to experimental data and their impact on a wide range of important scientific and technological domains, where the behavior of water at the interface with soft materials is crucial.

Abstract:Three lauryl ether sulfate-based anionic surface active ionic liquids (SAILs), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium lauryl ether sulfate ([Bmim][C12H25O(C2H4O)(2)SO3]), 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium lauryl ether sulfate ([Hmim][C12H25O(C2H4O)(2)SO3]), and 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium lauryl ether sulfate ([Omim][C12H25O(C2H4O)(2)SO3]) were synthesized. Unusual phosphatidylcholine lipid phase behavior in the ionic liquid ethylammonium nitrate

Abstract:Hypothesis: The forces that govern lipid self-assembly ionic liquids are similar to water, but their different balance can result in unexpected behaviour. Experiments: The self-assembly behaviour and phase equilibria of two phospholipids, 1,2-distearoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DSPC) and 1-palmitoyl-2-oleoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (POPC), in the most common protic ionic liquid, ethylammonium nitrate (EAN) have been investigated as function of composition and temperature by small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS/WAXS) and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). Findings: Both lipids form unusual self-assembly structures and show complex and unexpected phase behaviour unlike that seen in water; DSPC undergoes a gel Lβ to crystalline Lc phase transition on warming, while POPC forms worm-like micelles L1 upon dilution. This surprising phase behaviour is attributed to the large size of the EAN ions that solvate the lipid headgroup compared to water changing amphiphile packing. Weaker H-bonding between EAN and lipid headgroups also contributes. These results provide new insight for the design of lipid based nanostructured materials in ionic liquids with atypical properties.
The Influence Of Ionic Liquid On Phase Separation Of Poly(N-Isopropylacrylamide) Aqueous Solution

Abstract:The role of ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([Bmim][BF4]), on the phase transition behavior of concentrated PNIPAM solutions was investigated by FTIR spectroscopy in combination with two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy (2Dcos) and the perturbation correlation moving window (PCMW) technique for the first time. At low IL concentrations, the T-p of the PNIPAM solution decreases with increases in the IL concentration, due to the destabilization of the hydrated macromolecule structure via preferential interactions between IL and water molecules. However, at higher IL concentrations, unexpectedly, the phase transition behavior disappears. This has been attributed to the formation of a stable interaction network via intra-and intermolecular hydrogen bonding. Furthermore, two changes can be observed in the v(C-H) region for the sample with 0.4 mol L-1 [Bmim][BF4]. The first change is related to the phase separation of the PNIPAM solution, while the second step is attributed to an IL-D2O association, which takes part in the globule construction, probably interacting with hydrophilic groups of PNIPAM. Thus, the role of ILs on the phase behavior of PNIPAM is embodied in two opposite aspects, the "destroyer'' and the "constructer''.

Abstract:The synergistic effect of ionic liquids (ILs) and anionic surfactants, ILs and cationic surfactants, and ILs and nonionic surfactants to form microemulsions has been studied by other researchers, while the synergistic effect of ionic liquids and zwitterionic surfactants to form microemulsions has not been reported. Here, we report the synergistic effect of imidazolium ionic liquid, 1-hexadecyl-3-methylimidazolium bromide [C 16 mim] [Br], and betaine-type zwitterionic surfactant, cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine (CAHS), as surfactants, to form microemulsions with n-butanol, n-hexane and water. Phase behavior of the systems with different mass ratios of two surfactants, varied mass ratios of surfactant to cosurfactant (Km), and different temperatures are investigated by pseudo-ternary phase diagrams. The single-phase region of the microemulsion is maximized when the ratio of CAHS to [C 16 mim] [Br] is 1:4 and Km is 1.5, with little temperature dependence. The size and the polarity of microemulsions are explored. The synergistic effect of [C 16 mim] [Br] and CAHS is confirmed by surface tension and interface tension. A universal preparation method to form microemulsions by combining ionic liquids with zwitterionic betaine-type surfactants is provided and it play a pivotal role in broadening the potential uses of ILs in microemulsions.

Abstract:The systems investigated by small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS), and polarized microscopy were water/sucrose laurate/ethoxylated mono-di-glyceride/oleic phase. The oleic phase was caprylic-capric triglyceride or caprylic-capric triglyceride + ethanol. The mixing ratios (w/w) of sucrose laurate/ethoxylated mono-di-glyceride and ethanol/caprylic-capric triglyceride equal unity. SAXS experiments demonstrate the presence of lamellar (Lα) liquid crystals. The size of the nonpolar compartment, the thickness of the hydrophilic mantle, and the available surface area per mixed surfactants headgroups of the lamellar (Lα) liquid crystals were estimated as a function of oleic phase content. The size of the nonpolar compartment decrease with the increase in the oleic phase content (decrease of water content). The alcohol free system has higher values of the size of the nonpolar compartment compared to the alcohol based system. The thickness of the hydrophilic mantle also decreases with the increase in the oleic phase content. The alcohol free system has lower values of the thickness of the hydrophilic mantle compared to the alcohol based system. The available surface area per mixed surfactants headgroups increases with increasing the oleic phase content. The available surface area per mixed surfactants headgroups in the system free of alcohol is considerably smaller than that in the alcohol based system. The difference in the behaviour between the alcohol free and alcohol based systems is interpreted by the disordering effect of the mesophase by the presence of alcohol in system.

Abstract:Anionic surface active ionic liquid (SAIL), 1-butyl-3-ethoxycarbonylimidazolium dodecanesulfate ([Etbim][C12H25SO4]) was synthesized. The dependence of micellization of dodecanesulfate-based anionic SAILs on cation substituents of anionic SAILs was analyzed using experimental and theoretical studies. Critical micelle concentration of [Etbim] [C12H25SO4] was 1.17 mmol/L at 298.15 K. [Etbim] [C12H25SO4] showed superior surface property than [Bmim][C12H25SO4] with same dodecanesulfate anion. Theoretical density functional theory (NT) calculation was used to determine the micellization tendency of anionic SAILS ([Bmim][C12H25SO4] and [Etbim][C12H25SO4]). CMC difference of [Etbim][C12H25SO4] and [Bmim][C12H25SO4] was ascribed to the electrostatic interaction (repulsion or attraction) and hydrophobic interaction of cations ( [Bmim](+) and [Etbim](+)). dodecanesulfate anion, anionic SAILs ([Bmim][C12H25SO4] or [Etbim][C12H25SO4]), and the interactions toward water molecules in aqueous solution. The hydrocarbon chain lengths of [Bmim](+) and [Etbim](+) reflected the different hydrophobic interaction of cations, which clarified that the important role of cation substituents on micellization of [Etbim][C12H25SO4] and [Bmim][C12H25SO4]. Atomic charge distribution of cations will play important role on the further hydration toward water molecules or electrostatic attraction toward [C12H25SO4](-) anion. Typical hydrogen bonds and charge changes of typical atoms were beneficial for electrostatic attraction and electrostatic repulsion between polar groups of SAILs. The electrostatic repulsion and electrostatic attraction between polar groups of SAILS affected the CMC values of [Bmim][C12H25SO4] and [Etbim][C12H25SO4]. Changes of binding energy (D-0) and difference of binding energy (Delta D-0) confirmed the tendency of [Etbim][C12H25SO4] micelle formation was higher than that of [Bmim][C12H25SO4]. From emulsion to gel: Self-assembly behavior of ionic liquid surfactants in the water–oil interface

Abstract:Oleic acid (OA), behenic acid (BA) and N, N -dimethylcyclohexylamine (DMCHA) are used to synthesize two ionic liquid surfactants (ILSs, D-OA and D-BA) by acid-base reaction. ILSs greatly reduce the surface tension of water, and the critical micelle concentrations (CMC) are 5.86 × 10 -4 mol/L and 2.57 × 10 -6 mol/L, respectively. Different concentrations of D-OA can form a stable emulsion between water and oil, and the droplet size of emulsion with 3 wt% D-OA is mainly concentrated in 3 ∼ 6 μm, while D-BA is difficult to form a stable emulsion. ILSs with concentration greater than 4 wt% can form interfacial gels at the interface of water and oil, and the interfacial gel is analyzed by Polarizing Microscope (POM), Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS), and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), confirming it as a layered liquid crystal, and the interlayer spacing is 120.83 Å, indicating that the interlayer contains a large amount of water and oil. Rheological behavior verifies its layered structure with low stability. The interfacial gel can support water for 2,000 times of ILSs weight for about 20 days, verifying its static loading capacity can reach 3.98 × 10 4 Pa/m 2 . The interfacial gel also has a certain temperature response with losing the adhesion and stability at high temperature and recovering the illiquidity at low temperature. Salt makes the interfacial gel compressed and its stability reduced. The ILSs realize the transformation from emulsion to gel by self-assembly behavior, that is, the low-concentration ILSs in water are as a single ion or low-dispersed micelle and oil is dissolved into water to form an emulsion, while the high-concentration ILSs are formed wormlike micelles through self-assembly, with oil and water being dissolved to form an interfacial gel to be used as oil–water partitions or channels.

Abstract:Two novel aqueous two-phase systems (ATPSs) involving protic piperazinium-based ionic liquids (ILs) and anionic surfactants were found in the 1-ethylpiperazinium tetrafluoroborate ([C2pi][BF4]) + sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) + H2O system and the 1-phenylpiperazinium tetrafluoroborate ([Phpi][BF4]) + sodium dodecyl benzenesulfonate (SDBS) + H2O system. The ATPS regions in the ternary phase diagrams were determined, and the compositions and the microstructures of the conjugated phases were analyzed by UV-vis, (1)H NMR, DLS, and cryogenic TEM measurements. The results demonstrate size-enhanced micelles for both ATPSs. The strong electrostatic interactions between the cationic moiety of IL and the anionic surfactant play a very important role in the assembly of the large aggregates, and the cation-π interactions are involved in the [Phpi][BF4] + SDBS + H2O ATPS. In addition, the small cationic moiety of [C2pi][BF4] can be packed in the micelles, while the larger hydrophilic cationic moiety of [Phpi][BF4] makes it difficult to get into the micelles, leading to the different size enhancement effects. The driving force of phase separation is the formation and distribution of the large aggregates in the aqueous solutions. This work presents a novel nonaromatic ATPS formed by a piperazinium-based IL and an anionic surfactant, in which considerable size enhancement of aggregates takes place without the assistance of aromaticity in contrast to the other aromatic ATPSs.

Abstract:In this study, phase variations within a hydrophilic ionic liquid (IL)–D 2 O mixture were observed in using small- and wide-angle neutron scattering (SWANS). The specific IL used was 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium iodide ([C 12 mim][I]). Owing to the large neutron scattering length density of deuterium, D 2 O nanostructures appeared to be enhanced in the SWANS profile. Moreover, the complicated phase diagram of [C 12 mim][I]–D 2 O was determined using SWANS. Evidently, the water-rich region featured nanoconfined water (a water pocket), a smectic A phase, a columnar hexagonal phase as a lyotropic mesophase, a bicontinuous cubic phase as a double gyroid, and a layered crystal phase. Additionally, a double gyroid structure appeared in the narrow water-concentration region.
