Abstract:A fast discrimination method to olive oil adulteration based on Raman spectra using least squares support vector machine LSSVM was presented.Firstly,some known class olive oil samples were chosen randomly as training samples and their original Raman spectra were obtained,then a pretreatment and band selection were made for those spectra,and then,the LSSVM classifier was built.Secondly,for the Raman spectra of unknown test samples,the same pretreatment and band selection were used.Finally,the discrimination results were attained through the LSSVM classifier.The experiment was based on seven known Extra virgin olive oil and 112adulterated samples were acquired by mixing four other vegetable oils(soybean,rapeseed,corn and sunflower oil)into the basic oils.The whole samples were divided into training test and testing test randomly,the test result shows that this method was able to discriminate olive oil adulteration and the lowest detection limit of the doping amount was 5%.Compared with other classification methods,LSSVM classifier has the best classification performance.The above method provided a new solution for discriminate olive oil adulteration,which was fast and pretty easy.

Abstract:The adulteration of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) is a big problem in food safety. The present paper uses Raman spectra to characterize different kinds of vegetable oils in the region 800–1800 cm−1. Bayesian framework is applied to find the best parameters for the least squares support vector machines (LS-SVM), and an adulteration prediction model is established by using the optimal parameters and the Raman spectral data of EVOO for the training of LS-SVM without any classification process. The results show that the root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) and the coefficient of determination (R2) of the algorithm based on Bayesian framework LS-SVM (Bay-LS-SVM) are 0.0509 and 0.9976, respectively. Compared with the commonly used chemometric tool, partial least squares regression (PLS), the proposed algorithm shows higher accuracy and computational efficiency. The method based on Bay-LS-SVM and Raman spectroscopy is also easy to operate, non-destructive and ‘lipid sensitive’, and it is considered to be suitable for online detection of adulterated olive oil.
[Fast Discrimination of Edible Vegetable Oil Based on Raman Spectroscopy].

Abstract:A novel method to fast discriminate edible vegetable oils by Raman spectroscopy is presented. The training set is composed of different edible vegetable oils with known classes. Based on their original Raman spectra, baseline correction and normalization were applied to obtain standard spectra. Two characteristic peaks describing the unsaturated degree of vegetable oil were selected as feature vectors; then the centers of all classes were calculated. For an edible vegetable oil with unknown class, the same pretreatment and feature extraction methods were used. The Euclidian distances between the feature vector of the unknown sample and the center of each class were calculated, and the class of the unknown sample was finally determined by the minimum distance. For 43 edible vegetable oil samples from seven different classes, experimental results show that the clustering effect of each class was more obvious and the class distance was much larger with the new feature extraction method compared with PCA. The above classification model can be applied to discriminate unknown edible vegetable oils rapidly and accurately.

Abstract:Vegetable blend oils play a vital role in the daily human diet, but they have become the target of forgeries. This work proposes a method for the rapid on-site quantification of high-value pure vegetable oil (e.g., extra virgin olive oil (EVOO)) content in vegetable blend oils by combining Raman spectroscopy and metaheuristics-based variable selection models. First, the corn oil-EVOO and peanut oil-EVOO vegetable blend oil samples were prepared for Raman spectra measurement. Then, partial least squares regression and four metaheuristics-based variable selection models, including genetic algorithm combined moving window (GA-MW), particle swarm optimization combined moving window (PSO-MW), grey wolf optimizer combined moving window (GWO-MW), and whale optimization algorithm combined moving window (WOA-MW), were applied to the collected Raman spectra for a comparative study. The method developed in this work could accurately quantify the EVOO content in vegetable blend oil samples. In addition, the stability tests and limit of detection values verified the stability and sensitivity of the developed method. Finally, two-tailed paired t-tests identified that there was no significant difference between the gas chromatography–mass spectrometry method and the developed method. Therefore, the developed method provides a rapid and cost-effective strategy for quantitative authentication of vegetable blend oils.

Abstract:For the purpose of the authentication of sorts as well as the prediction of contents of the oils which were adulterated into olive oil, 117 olive oil samples adulterated with sunflower seed oil, soybean oil and corn oil were detected by Raman spectroscopy, and least squares support vector machine (LS-SVM) based on multiple iterative optimization was used to identify the type of the adulterant oil, and the composite recognition rate was 97%. In addition, methods such as LS-SVM, ANNs and PLSR were used to build the Raman spectra calibration model of the adulterant oil (sunflower seed oil, soybean oil and corn oil) contents respectively, the results indicated that LS-SVM had the best predictive performance, and the root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) ranged from 0. 007 4 to 0. 014 2. Research results showed the method based on Raman spectroscopy and LS-SVM was accurate, fast, simple and non-destructive for adulterated olive oil detection.

Abstract:The fatty acid composition of vegetable oil plays a significant role in a nutrition-balanced diet, which makes this industry more quality conscious. A set of store-purchased vegetable oils and their binary mixtures were characterized by Raman spectra in a region of 800-2000cm(-1). The obtained Raman spectral data were pretreated, and intensities of eight characteristic peaks were extracted as the eigenvalues of an entire spectrum. A prediction model of fatty acid content based on least squares support vector machines (LS-SVM) were established for multivariate analysis between the Raman spectral eigenvalues and the fatty acid composition measured by gas chromatography (GC) method. The performance of the model was evaluated by comparing the predicted values to the reference values from GC analysis. The correlation coefficient for the prediction of oleic acid, linoleic acid and -linolenic acid was 0.9972, 0.9982 and 0.9854, respectively. Raman spectroscopy based on LS-SVM can be a promising technique for predicting the fatty acid composition of vegetable oil with the advantages of being simple and time-effective while not requiring any sample preprocessing. In particular, a portable Raman system is suitable for on-site detection in practical applications. Copyright (c) 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract:For the purpose of the rapid prediction of saturated fatty acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid content in edible vegetable oil, the Raman spectra of a batch of edible vegetable oils and their one-one mixtures with different ratios were measured in the range of 800-2 000 cm(-1), 91 samples were measured totally in this research, the obtained Raman spectra data were preprocessed by a new method proposed in this paper called auto-set fulcrums baseline fitting method based on peak-seeking algorithm, and 8 characteristic peak values (872 cm(-1) [v(C-C)], 972 cm(-1) [delta(C=C) trans], 1 082 cm(-1) [v(C-C)], 1 267 cm(-1) [delta(=C-H) cis], 1 303 cm(-1) [delta(CH2) twisting], 1 442 cm(-1) [delta(CH2) scissoring], 1 658 cm(-1) [v(C=C) cis], 1 748 cm(-1) [v(C=O)]) were extracted to be the eigenvalues for the whole spectra, among the 8 peaks there are three peaks (972, 1 267, 1 658 cm(-1)) that play an important role in the establishment of mathematical model, they are closely concerned with C=C band which distinguishes the three fatty acid types. By using these eigenvalues as inputs, and actual saturated fatty acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid contents of sample oils as outputs, a prediction mathematical model that predicts simultaneously the three fatty acid contents was established using multiple regression analysis: multi-output least squares support vector regression machine (MLS-SVR) and partial least squares (PLS). Results show that the MLS-SVR has better effects. The predicting results are compared with results of gas chromatography(GC), and the obtained root mean square error of prediction(RMSEP) for saturated fatty acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid are 0.496 7%, 0.840 0% and 1.019 9%, and the correlation coefficients (r) are 0.813 3, 0.999 2 and 0.998 1, respectively. When this model is applied in the detection of new unknown oil samples, the prediction error does not exceed 5%. Results show that the Raman spectra analysis technology based on MLS-SVR can be a convenient, fast, non-destructive, and precise new method for oil detection.

Abstract:Walnut oil (WNO) is a high-quality vegetable oil with high nutritional value, but it may be the target for adulteration and mislabeling. Therefore, this work proposes the use of excitation–emission matrix fluorescence (EEMF) spectroscopy coupled with chemometrics and ensemble learning to identify and semi-quantify the adulterated WNO. Herein, a total of 711 vegetable oil samples were analyzed. A five-component alternating trilinear decomposition (ATLD) completed the EEMF spectra characterization of 426 pure oil samples and provided chemically meaningful information. Five authenticity identification methods, including eXtreme gradient boosting (XGB), gradient boosting decision tree (GBDT), random forest (RF), multi-way partial least squares discriminant analysis (N-PLS-DA), and k-nearest neighbor (k-NN), were used for the discrimination of WNO and counterfeited WNO. Besides, PLS regression (PLSR) models were established to semi-quantify the adulterated levels of WNO concentration in edible blended oils. The results showed that ensemble methods obtained better performance, with the correct classification rate (CCR) of cross-validation being ranged 82.7–100 %, and the value of RMSEP is less than 12.8 %. These results suggest that EEMF combined with chemometrics and ensemble methods can be used as a promising tool for rapid authenticity identification in commercial edible vegetable oils.

Abstract:This research investigates the use of excitation-emission matrix fluorescence (EEMF) in conjunction with chemometric models to rapidly identify and quantify adulteration in olive oil, a critical concern where sample availability is limited. Adulteration is simulated by blending soybean, peanut, and linseed oils into olive oil, creating diverse adulterated samples. Principal component analysis (PCA) was applied to the EEMF spectral data as an initial exploratory measure to cluster and differentiate adulterated samples. Spatial clustering enabled vivid visualization of the variations and trends in the spectra. The novel application of parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) for data decomposition in this paper focuses on unraveling correlations between the decomposed components and the actual adulterated components, which offers a novel perspective for accurately quantifying adulteration levels. Additionally, a comparative analysis was conducted between the PCA and PARAFAC methodologies. Our study not only unveils a new avenue for the quantitative analysis of adulterants in olive oil through spectral detection but also highlights the potential for applying these insights in practical, real-world scenarios, thereby enhancing detection capabilities for various edible oil samples. This promises to improve the detection of adulteration across a range of edible oil samples, offering significant contributions to food safety and quality assurance.

Abstract:Identification and quantification of sesame oil products are crucial due to the existing problems of adulteration with lower-priced oils and false labeling of sesame proportions. In this study, 1D CNN models were established to achieve discrimination of oil types and multiple quantification of adulteration using portable Raman spectrometer. An improved data augmentation method involving discarding transformations that alter peak positions was proposed, and synchronously injecting noise during geometric transformations. Furthermore, a novel neural network structure was introduced incorporating vector regression to accurately predict each component simultaneously. The proposed method has achieved higher accuracy in detecting multi-component adulteration compared with chemometrics (100 % accuracy in classifying different oils; R2 over 0.99 and RMSE within 2 % in predicting unknown adulterated samples). Finally, commercially available sesame oil products were tested and compared with gas chromatography and colorimetric methods, demonstrating the effectiveness of our proposed model in achieving higher detection accuracy at low-concentration adulteration.

Abstract:Due to the significant price differences among different types of edible oils, expensive oils like olive oil are often blended with cheaper edible oils. This practice of adulteration in edible oils, aimed at increasing profits for producers, poses a major concern for consumers. Furthermore, adulteration in edible oils can lead to various health issues impacting consumer well-being. In order to meet the requirements of fast, non-destructive, universal, accurate, and reliable quality testing for edible oil, the oblique-incidence reflectivity difference (OIRD) method combined with machine learning algorithms was introduced to detect a variety of edible oils. The prediction accuracy of Gradient Boosting, K-Nearest Neighbor, and Random Forest models all exceeded 95%. Moreover, the contribution rates of the OIRD signal, DC signal, and fundamental frequency signal to the classification results were 45.7%, 34.1%, and 20.2%, respectively. In a quality evaluation experiment on olive oil, the feature importance scores of three signals reached 63.4%, 18.9%, and 17.6%. The results suggested that the feature importance score of the OIRD signal was significantly higher than that of the DC and fundamental frequency signals. The experimental results indicate that the OIRD method can serve as a powerful tool for detecting edible oils.
Rapid quantification of single component oil in perilla oil blends by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy combined with chemometrics

Abstract:As a unconventional oil, perilla oil is much more expensive than conventional oils since it has the highest content of α-linolenic acid among vegetable oils. Thus the adulteration of perilla oil is serious, which needs to be solved. In this study, the single component oil in perilla oil blends were first quantitatively analyzed by ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy combined with chemometric methods. Soybean oil and palm oil were added into perilla oil to form binary and ternary perilla oil blends. Partial least squares (PLS), back propagation-artificial neural network (BP-ANN), support vector regression (SVR) and extreme learning machine (ELM) were compared and the best model was selected for calibration. In order to improve the prediction performance of the calibration model, ten preprocessing methods and five variable selection methods were investigated. Results show that PLS was the best calibration method for binary and ternary perilla oil blends. For binary perilla oil blends, the correlation coefficients of prediction (Rp) obtained by PLS were both above 0.99, which does not need preprocessing and variable selection. For ternary perilla oil blends, after the best continuous wavelet transform (CWT) preprocessing and discretized whale optimization algorithm (WOA) variable selection, the Rp values obtained by the best model CWT-WOA-PLS were all above 0.97. This research provides a common framework for calibration of perilla oil blends, which maybe a promising method for quality control of perilla oil in industry.
Identification and Quantification of Common Adulterants in Extra Virgin Olive Oil Using Microwave Dielectric Spectroscopy Aided by Feedforward Neural Networks

Abstract:In this work, we combine microwave dielectric spectroscopy and machine learning techniques to assess the authenticity of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). We investigate four common adulterants of EVOO, namely, soybean oil, corn oil, sunflower oil, and canola oil. We use a low-cost spiral-shaped microwave resonator-based sensor operating at 546.8 MHz to detect changes in the complex permittivity of oil samples. A vector network analyzer (VNA) is used to extract complex scattering parameters and that serve as inputs for two different feedforward artificial neural network (ANN) classifiers. The first model, using only the real and imaginary parts of , achieves an overall accuracy of 91.4% in predicting the applied adulterant in test samples. In contrast, the second model, incorporating the real and imaginary parts of both and , attains a 99.2% accuracy for test samples. In addition, we investigate the relationship between the measured (in dB) and the adulteration level, expressed as the percentile value of the volume of adulterant per volume of the sample (mL/mL). For each adulterant, a calibration equation is developed using partial least-squares regression (PLSR) to predict adulteration levels up to 50%. The maximum root mean square error (RMSE) is 2.1% for canola oil adulteration prediction. PLSR yields RMSE values of 0.9% for soybean oil, 1.1% for corn oil, and 1.0% for sunflower oil adulteration. This methodology offers both qualitative and quantitative analyses of EVOO, capable of identifying adulterations as low as 5% with a simple, portable, and practical system.

Abstract:Abstract Previous studies have shown that each edible oil type has its own characteristic fatty acid profile; however, no method has yet been described allowing the identification of oil types simply based on this characteristic. Moreover, the fatty acid profile of a specific oil type can be mimicked by a mixture of 2 or more oil types. This has led to fraudulent oil adulteration and intentional mislabeling of edible oils threatening food safety and endangering public health. Here, we present a machine learning method to uncover fatty acid patterns discriminative for ten different plant oil types and their intra-variability. We also describe a supervised end-to-end learning method that can be generalized to oil composition of any given mixtures. Trained on a large number of simulated oil mixtures, independent test dataset validation demonstrates that the model has a 50 th percentile absolute error between 1.4–1.8% and a 90 th percentile error of 4–5.4% for any 3-way mixtures of the ten oil types. The deep learning model can also be further refined with on-line training. Because oil-producing plants have diverse geographical origins and hence slightly varying fatty acid profiles, an online-training method provides also a way to capture useful knowledge presently unavailable. Our method allows the ability to control product quality, determining the fair price of purchased oils and in-turn allowing health-conscious consumers the future of accurate labeling.

Abstract:Long-term consumption of mixed fraudulent edible oils increases the risk of developing of chronic diseases which has been a threat to the public health globally. The complicated global supply-chain is making the industry malpractices had often gone undetected. In order to restore the confidence of consumers, traceability (and accountability) of every level in the supply chain is vital. In this work, we shown that machine learning (ML) assisted windowed spectroscopy (e.g., visible-band, infra-red band) produces high-throughput, non-destructive, and label-free authentication of edible oils (e.g., olive oils, sunflower oils), offers the feasibility for rapid analysis of large-scale industrial screening. We report achieving high-level of discriminant (AUC > 0.96) in the large-scale (n ≈ 11,500) of adulteration in olive oils. Notably, high clustering fidelity of 'spectral fingerprints' achieved created opportunity for (hypothesis-free) self-sustaining large database compilation which was never possible without machine learning. Abstract:Limited information on monitoring adulteration in extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) by hyperspectral imaging (HSI) exists. This work presents a comparative study of chemometrics for the authentication and quantification of adulteration in EVOO with cheaper edible oils using GC-MS, HSI, FTIR, Raman and UV-Vis spectroscopies. The adulteration mixtures were prepared by separately blending safflower oil, corn oil, soybean oil, canola oil, sunflower oil, and sesame oil with authentic EVOO in different concentrations (0–20%, m/m). Partial least squares-discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) and PLS regression models were then built for the classification and quantification of adulteration in olive oil, respectively. HSI, FTIR, UV-Vis, Raman, and GC-MS combined with PLS-DA achieved correct classification accuracies of 100%, 99.8%, 99.6%, 96.6%, and 93.7%, respectively, in the discrimination of authentic and adulterated olive oil. The overall PLS regression model using HSI data was the best in predicting the concentration of adulterants in olive oil with a low root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) of 1.1%, high R2pred (0.97), and high residual predictive deviation (RPD) of 6.0. The findings suggest the potential of HSI technology as a fast and non-destructive technique to control fraud in the olive oil industry.

Abstract:To improve the accuracy of detecting adulteration of camellia oil, a real-time and rapid method using near-infrared Raman spectroscopy combined with BP-Adaboost neural network (BP-ANN) model was developed for the first time. Principal component analysis was used to reduce the dimension of the Raman spectral data of pure camellia oil, soybean oil, and camellia oil blended with soybean oil. Adaboost algorithm was used to optimize the back propagation neural network model for differentiating between authentic and adulterated camellia oil. A BP-ANN model was successfully established to detect the adulteration of camellia oil. This model obtained the value of prediction linearity greater than 0.999 and a mean square error less than 1%. Our results demonstrated that NIRS combined with BP-ANN model could be used as a rapid and precise approach for authentication and adulteration analysis of camellia oil.
