Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To identify the prevalence of female pattern hair loss (FPHL), hair characteristics, and associated factors in healthy postmenopausal women.METHODS: Two hundred postmenopausal women aged 50 to 65 years were recruited. Each participant was evaluated for FPHL according to Ludwig's classification using standardized global photography in all six views and trichoscopy for hair density and diameter. Three dermatologists re-evaluated all pictures for confirmation of FPHL. The time since menopause, levels of scalp sebum, serum testosterone, estradiol, thyroid stimulating hormone, and hemoglobin; family history of hair loss, as well as an evaluation of low self-esteem were evaluated. Women who underwent recent hair loss treatments were excluded. We used simple and multivariable logistic regression analysis to identify the factors affecting FPHL.RESULTS: In total, 178 postmenopausal women were evaluated for hair-loss patterns. The average age and time since menopause were 58.8±4.1 and 9.2 ± 5.6 years, respectively. The prevalence of FPHL was 52.2% (95% CI, 44.6-59.8). Severity of FPHL by Ludwig grades I, II, and III was 73.2% (95% CI, 62.9-81.8), 22.6% (95% CI, 14.6-32.4), and 4.3% (95% CI, 1.2-10.7), respectively. Logistic regression analysis revealed that age, time since menopause, and body mass index were all significantly associated with FPHL. After adjusting for age and family history of FPHL, only body mass index ≥25 kg/m2 was significantly associated with FPHL (adjusted OR = 2.65, 95% CI, 1.23-5.70). Conclusion: The prevalence of FPHL was high in postmenopausal women, raising the need for hair loss awareness in menopause clinics. Early detection and proper treatment of FPHL may increase the quality of life in postmenopausal women.

Abstract:Objective: To study the clinical features and associated factors of female pattern hair loss (FPHL) in premenopausal and menopausal women patients. Materials and Methods: This is a retrospective chart review of FPHL patients visited hair clinic, Siriraj Hospital from June 2012 to May 2015. Demographic data, family history and history of hair loss were evaluated. Factors associated with FPHL were analysed. Results: There were 267 patients (180 premenopausal women and 87 menopausal women) in this study. The mean age of onset of patients was 35.5±12 years (premenopausal FPHL) and 60.5±7 years (menopausal FPHL). Positive family history of androgenetic alopecia (AGA) was 48.3%, mainly in first-degree relatives. The data showed an increased incidence of FPHL with advancing age. The most common presentation is Ludwig grade I. The study showed that patients also have dyslipidemia (16.9%), hypertension (16.5%), diabetes mellitus (10.9%), hypothyroidism (4.9%), anemia (3.7%), and hyperthyroidism (2.9%). In multivariate analysis, significant associations were found between low ferritin level < 70 μg/L and premenopausal FPHL (OR 5.51, 95% CI 2.26-15.14, P = 0.01). Conclusion: Maternal family history of AGA seems to have a greater influence on premenopausal FPHL. Low serum ferritin levels < 70 μg/L were significantly associated with FPHL in premenopausal women.
Factors associated with female pattern hair loss and its prevalence in Taiwanese women: A community-based survey

Abstract:BACKGROUND: Although female pattern hair loss (FPHL) has been considered simply the female counterpart of male pattern hair loss in men, the risk factors may differ.OBJECTIVE: We sought to evaluate factors associated with FPHL and to estimate its prevalence in women.METHOD: In total, 26,226 subjects aged 30 years and older participated in a cross-sectional survey. Ludwig and Norwood classifications were used to assess the degree of hair loss. Information on possible risk factors for FPHL was collected using a questionnaire interview.RESULTS: The prevalence of FPHL (Ludwig grade >I) for all ages was 11.8% (95% CI 11.5%-12.2%), increasing with advancing age. After controlling for age and family history, statistically significant associations were noted between FPHL and high fasting glucose (odds ratio [OR] 1.15, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.04-1.28), fewer childbirths (OR 1.24, 95% CI 1.12-1.38), breast-feeding (OR 0.88, 95% CI 0.78-0.98), oral contraceptive use (OR 1.21, 95% CI 1.01-1.45), and ultraviolet exposure more than 16 hours per week (OR 1.12, 95% CI 1.02-1.22).LIMITATIONS: The validity and reliability of FPHL classification may be not perfect in this survey and may need to be verified. Information on family history may be still subject to recall bias.CONCLUSIONS: Risk factors for FPHL and male androgenic alopecia may differ.

Abstract:Objectives: To investigate the trichoscopic features of female pattern hair loss (FPHL) in Chinese Han patients and analyze the difference between male and female patients with FPHL. Materials and Methods: Trichoscopic images were taken in four different scalp areas, including right frontal hairline, vertex, right parietal and occipital areas. Hair density, hair shaft diameter, vellus hair ratio and single hair follicle unit ratio were counted manually and analyzed. Results: Seventy-three subjects were enrolled in this study, including 38 patients with FPHL (28 females and 10 males) and 35 normal controls without hair loss. The hair density and hair shaft diameter of FPHL patients reduced in the whole scalp. Vellus hair ratio and single hair follicle unit ratio were both increased in FPHL compared to normal controls. The vertex was the most affected area and the hair shaft diameter showed the most significant difference. Parietal and occipital area were also affected in FPHL. The reduction or increase was correlated with the severity of Ludwig staging. Very few gender differences were detected in male and female FPHL patients. Conclusion: FPHL patients showed decreased hair density and hair shaft diameter, accompanied by increased vellus hair ratio and single hair follicle unit ratio. Parietal and occipital area can be also affected in FPHL, though not as severe as in vertex area. FPHL in male basically has the same characteristic as those in female patients. Limitation: The main limitation of the study is the small sample size which only enrolled 10 male FPHL patients, in comparison to the female cases. The findings could not be representative of the normal population with the limited sample size.

Abstract:Objectives: Several studies report reduced aerobic capacity in patients with fibromyalgia (FM). The purpose of our study was to investigate whether a reduction in aerobic capacity in these patients is accompanied by alterations in metabolic rate and heart rate (HR) response. Method: Twelve women with FM and 12 healthy controls (HCs) matched on sex and age, and with similar leisure time physical activity, participated in the study. All subjects performed an incremental submaximal cycle ergometer test to anaerobic threshold [AT; i.e. blood lactate concentration (bLa) ≥ 4 mmol/L], followed by a stepwise test to exhaustion to estimate maximal oxygen consumption (VO2max). Results: Oxygen consumption and workload were lower among patients than HCs both at AT and at termination of the VO2max test (p < 0.011 for all comparisons). Two patients (18%) and nine HCs (75%) reached VO2max criteria. The relationship between metabolic rate and workload did not differ between groups at exercise below AT. At exercise above AT, the metabolic rate increased disproportionally to workload in the patients. Although the patients had a higher anaerobic contribution to the total metabolic rate at the end of the submaximal test, the anaerobic contribution at the end of the maximal test did not differ between groups. HR responses were largely similar between groups. Conclusions: The current study indicates that patients with FM have similar metabolic and cardiovascular responses to submaximal exercise as HCs. However, these patients have reduced ability to reach VO2max and a possible deficit in the metabolic system when exercising above the AT.

Abstract:Introduction: Female Pattern Hair Loss (FPHL) is one of the main causes of hair loss in adult women and has a major impact on individual’s quality of life. It evolves from the progressive miniaturization of follicles that lead to a subsequent decrease of the hair density, leading to a non-scarring diffuse alopecia. In spite of the high frequency of the disease and the relevance of its psychological impact, its pathogenesis is not yet fully understood, being influenced by genetic, hormonal, and environmental factors. Objective: To evaluate etiological factors associated with female pattern hair loss. Materials & Methods: This was a hospital-based case control study, conducted in the Department of Dermatology & Venereology, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) from March, 2021 to August, 2022. In this study, total 100 females aged 18 to 45 years were enrolled. Among them, 30 females had history of hair loss >6 months, presented to outpatient department, BSMMU were included as case & 70 healthy females who had no history of hair loss included as control according to inclusion & exclusion criteria. Diagnosis of FPHL was made clinically & Ludwig classifications were used to assess the degree of hair loss. Information on possible risk factors for FPHL was collected using a questionnaire interview. Result: The mean age of the patients with FPHL was 41.0±7.77 years with majority belongs to >40 years of age group & their mean duration of hair loss was 26.3±12.0 months. Among the patients of FPHL, 36.7% had history of inadequate intake of iron containing food, 66.7% had family history of alopecia, 36.7% had history of increased bleeding during their menstruation, 20.0% had multiple (>3) childbirth & 23.3% had hypertension. About 86.7% patients with FPHL had low serum ferritin (<30ng/ml) with mean serum ferritin level was 20.25±16.07ng/ml and 66.7% patients of FPHL had low Hb (<12 μg/l) with mean Hb was 11.47±1.52 μg/l. In the multivariate logistic regression analysis significant association found with FPHL were age (OR 2.013, 95% CI 0.672-3.714), family history of alopecia (OR1.231, 95% CI 0.162-1.991) and lower serum ferritin level (OR1.090, 95% CI 1.043-1.139). Conclusion: Age, family history of alopecia, lower serum ferritin may be implicated as risk factors for female pattern hair loss. Medicine Today 2023 Vol.36 (1): 7-11

Abstract:OBJECTIVES: To investigate the characteristics of hairs in Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) patients and healthy females in Southern China.MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three fundamental hair parameters in different scalp areas of 90 Southern Chinese FPHL patients and 83 healthy controls were analyzed by phototrichogram.RESULTS: Female pattern hair loss patients showed reduced hair density, hair diameter, and terminal/vellus hair ratio. The reduction correlated with the severity of Ludwig staging. Midscalp was the most affected area in FPHL, but occipital and temporal sites were also involved. In normal women, the highest hair density was observed in midscalp, followed by occipital and temporal areas. Peak hair density at midscalp sites was reached at 20s group, then declined with age. Maximum hair diameter at midscalp and occipital sites occurred in 40s group. Terminal/vellus hair ratio tended to increase with age and peak on 50-60s group.CONCLUSION: Reduced hair density and hair diameter, and miniaturization of hair follicles are the characteristics of FPHL in Southern Chinese women. Occipital and temporal sites are also affected in FPHL. Age-associated changes might have an influence on the hair condition. The values of hair parameters obtained in this study will help to establish reference data for better evaluation of hair disorders.

Abstract:Pattern hair loss can occur in both men and women, and the underlying molecular mechanisms have been continuously studied in recent years. Male androgenetic alopecia (M-AGA), also termed male pattern hair loss, is the most common type of hair loss in men. M-AGA is considered an androgen-dependent trait with a background of genetic predisposition. The interplay between genetic and non-genetic factors leads to the phenotype of follicular miniaturization. Although this similar pattern of phenotypic miniaturization can also be found in female pattern hair loss (FPHL), the corresponding genetic factors in M-AGA do not account for the phenotype in FPHL, indicating that there are different genes contributing to FPHL. Therefore, the role of genetic factors in FPHL is still uncertain. Understanding the genetic mechanism that causes FPHL is crucial for the future development of personalized treatment strategies. This review aims to highlight the differences in the ethnic prevalence and genetic background of FPHL, as well as the current genetic research progress in nutrition, Wnt signaling, and sex hormones related to FPHL.

The Predictive Value of Midscalp Hair Density and Terminal Hair Percentage in the Severity Evaluation of FPHL Assessed by Trichoscan in a Sample of Chinese Population

Abstract:Background: Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) is the most common hair loss disorder in women, which may impair patient's self-identity. It presents as a diffuse reduction in hair density at the mid and frontal regions of the scalp with preservation of the frontal hairline. TrichoScan can be used as a diagnostic tool and for monitoring patients in male pattern hair loss, but little is known in FPHL with Chinese population. Objective: To explore the predictive value of various TrichoScan characteristics at different areas of the scalp in the diagnosis and evaluation of FPHL. Materials and methods: A total of 261 FPHL subjects were divided into three groups according to Ludwig classification. Together with 108 healthy controls, they were evaluated by computer-assisted TrichoScan. Various hair parameters were analyzed in the frontal, midscalp, vertex, parietal, and occipital areas of the scalp. Results: Declining hair densities, terminal hair percentage, hair follicular unit density, mean hair diameter, and average hair/unit combined with increased intermediate hair percentage, and vellus hair percentage were observed across all areas of the scalp for FPHL subjects. Hair density and terminal hair percentage in the midscalp area were the factors most affecting Ludwig classification. The two parameters combined achieved 85.12% correct classification rate and an area under the ROC curve of 0.88 in the diagnosis of FPHL. Additionally, we reported a unique type of FPHL which mostly affected the parietal area, occurring with or without traditional midline changes. Conclusion: FPHL in a Chinese population presented characteristics of reduced hair density and miniaturization of hair follicles in the midline scalp and to a lesser extent in the parietal area. Hair density and terminal hair percentage in the midscalp exhibited the greatest predictive value of Ludwig classification. Our results may further provide the basis for quantitative classification of FPHL.

Abstract:Abstract : Titan Corporation (Titan) and Science & Engineering Associates, Inc. (SEA) are jointly developing a Multiple Excitations Multi-Spectral Fluorescence (MEMSF) bio-detector for potential use in tailored applications. Titan and SEA have an ongoing strategic relationship to design, develop and deploy the MEMSF technology. MEMSF technology promises to be a cost effective solution that provides a high probability of success, while pushing the envelope of spectral sensing of bio-aerosols. The major scientific innovation of MEMSF is measuring the fluorescence of aerosol samples at a sufficient number of excitation and emission wavelengths to recognize the identifying fluorescence features of Aerosol Biological Weapons Agents (ABWA) and common interfering aerosols. The key is to not only find the "needle in the haystack", but "remove the hay". In other words, MEMSF is a sensitive ABWA detector that also recognizes and rejects potential false alarms from interfering agents. The MEMSF bio-detector concept, illustrated in Figure 1, uses a virtual impactor technology to concentrate particles in the 0.5 10 m size range and reject clutter outside that range. This size-selected aerosol sample is deposited onto non-fluorescing filter media for MEMSF analysis and is also automatically preserved for further confirmatory and forensic analyses. The MEMSF detection process is based upon the intensities of multiple wavelength excitation/emission pairs (EEP) selected to characterize and identify bioaerosols.
Assessment of Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Women Having Female Pattern Hair Loss

Abstract:Abstract Background: Many studies have associated male androgenetic alopecia with the risk of cardiovascular disorders but very few studies have addressed this association in women with FPHL. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional hospital-based study in which a total of 50 women (18-45 years) were recruited. The objective was to measure carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) by doppler ultrasound, Body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, lipid profile, fasting blood sugar (FBS), insulin, testosterone, Sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG), hs-CRP, ESR and fibrinogen, in pre-menopausal women having FPHL and to correlate these parameters with severity of FPHL. The prevalence of Metabolic syndrome (MetS) and Insulin resistance were evaluated. Results: Metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance were found in 12 (24%) and 17 (34%) cases respectively. Hypercholesterolemia, elevated LDL levels and hypertriglyceridemia, low HDL levels and hyperinsulinemia were found in 11 (22%), 31 (62%), 9 (18%), 17 (34%) and 7 (14%) cases respectively. 8 (16%) cases were diabetics. Elevated ESR, increased fibrinogen levels and elevated hs-CRP were found in 43 (86%), 10 (20%) and 21 (42%) cases respectively. CIMT was found to be within its normal range. Correlation of CIMT, anthropometric indices (BMI and WC), biochemical markers (serum cholesterol, triglycerides, FBS, and fibrinogen), and presence of metabolic syndrome with severity of FPHL in terms of Ludwig grade was found to be statistically significant. Conclusions: The determination of metabolic syndrome, insulin resistance and acute phase reactants such as hs-CRP and fibrinogen may be useful screening methods to detect increased cardiovascular risk in women with FPHL.

Abstract:Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) is the most common form of alopecia in women. Affected women may experience psychological distress and impaired social functioning. Early diagnosis and initiation of treatment are desirable because treatments are more effective to avoid the progression of hair loss than stimulating regrowth. Typically, a diagnosis of FPHL can be confirmed by review of a patient's medical history and a physical examination alone. Testing a scalp biopsy is diagnostic but usually not required. In women with signs of hyperandrogenism, an investigation for ovarian or adrenal disorders should be performed. Treatment for FPHL is obscured by myths. The aim of FPHL treatment could be two-fold: Reverse or stabilize the process of hair follicle miniaturization. Mild-to-moderate FPHL in women can be treated with oral antiandrogen therapies (cyproterone acetate and spironolactone) and/or topical minoxidil with good results in many cases. If used correctly, available medical treatments arrest the progression of the disease and reverse miniaturization in most patients with mild-to-moderate FPHL. Hair systems and surgery may be considered for selected cases of severe FPHL.

Abstract:Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) is the most common hair loss disorder in women. Initial signs may develop during teenage years leading to a progressive hair loss with a characteristic pattern distribution. The condition is characterized by progressive replacement of terminal hair follicles over the frontal and vertex regions by miniaturized follicles, that leads progressively to a visible reduction in hair density. Women diagnosed with FPHL may undergo significant impairment of quality of life. FPHL diagnosis is mostly clinical. Depending on patient history and clinical evaluation, further diagnostic testing may be useful. The purpose of the paper is to review the current knowledge about epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, and diagnosis of FPHL.

The Association Between Clinical and Biochemical Hyperandrogenism in Women With Female Pattern Hair Loss

Abstract:Abstract Background: The exact association between clinical and biochemical hyperandrogenism (HA) is heterogeneous and cannot be ascertained, especially in normoandrogenic women. Aim: Evaluate any association between clinical HA phenotypes and biochemical parameters in premenopausal women with female pattern hair loss (FPHL). Methods: A cross-sectional observational study on 362 women with different degrees of FPHL, who were assessed for general characteristics, the degree of FPHL by Sinclair’s score, hirsutism by modified Ferriman-Gallwey (mFG) score. Evaluation for biochemical HA included total testosterone (TT), sex-hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), calculated free testosterone (FT), calculated bioavailable testosterone (BT), and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEA-S). The variables of clinical HA which were used in this study are FPHL, hirsutism, and acne. We used the Free and Bioavailable Testosterone Calculator to calculate the FT and BT. Results: The enrolled young premenopausal women’s age range was (14-47 years). Around 78% of them were overweight or obese. Eighty-percent of women had a mild FPHL, with a median duration of three years where 2/3 of women had a duration < 3 years, and had no significant relationship to FPHL degree. About 73% of women had either a mild to moderate hirsutism, and around 16% had acne. The biochemical HA was confirmed in around 52% of women (n=188), who show high levels of calculated FT. The calculated BT is high in 78.5% of the enrolled women (n=284). The means of biochemical indicators for HA were in their reference ranges or slightly above, with no specific change pattern with the corresponding FPHL severity. None of these parameters had a significant relationship to the severity of FPHL. The duration of FPHL was not affected by any presumed variable of clinical or biochemical HA. Conclusions: FPHL severity is associated with other clinical HA signs like hirsutism and acne, but not to HA’s biochemical parameter. Other parameters, like SHBG, HOMA-IR, and BMI, had no significant relation to the severity of FPHL. Clinical implications: FPHL severity does not correlate with the magnitude of hyperandrogenism. The assessment of women with FPHL is primarily clinical. The biochemical picture assists the diagnostic process.

Abstract:The article presents a review of modern ukrainian and foreign publications on the pathogenesis, clinical manifestations and diagnostics of female pattern hair loss (FPHL), which is a common type of hair loss and its frequency increases with age. The questions of terminology, disease prevalence, and risk factors of hair loss are considered. It is emphasized that FPHL is a clinical problem and that it is advisable to clarify the comorbid profile of female patients and to screen for metabolic disorders. There is still no complete understanding of the pathophysiology of FPHL. There is evidence that hormonal, genetic, and environmental factors are involved in the process of hair loss in women. Current data concerning systemic hormonal disturbances in ovarian and adrenal gland diseases in women as well as the importance of disorders of androgen-dependent mechanisms of regulation of the hair follicle growth cycle are presented.The attention is drawn to genetic abnormalities in the case of FPHL. The role of growth factors, cytokines, microinflammation, iron deficiency, perifollicular fibrosis, oxidative stress in regression of the hair follicle is considered. FPHL is characterized as non-scarring alopecia, which develops due to progressive miniaturization of hair follicles and further hair reduction, especially in the central (frontal and parietal) scalp, gradual replacement of long terminal hair by short pubic (vellus) hair. Three models of female hair loss, modern classification according to the stages of progression used in practice, possible causes of clinical differences in alopecia in men and women are presented. The main directions of diagnostics (history, clinical and laboratory examination, special dermatological tests) are outlined, the possibilities of modern noninvasive diagnostic method of dermoscopy are emphasized. Pharmacotherapy, recommended on the basis of evidence-based medicine, is limited to two drugs – topical minoxidil and systemic finasteride. The necessity of interdisciplinary approach to the management of patients with FPHL has been proved.
Is There Any Association Between Clinical and Biochemical Hyperandrogenism in Women With Female Pattern Hair Loss?

Abstract:Background The exact association between clinical and biochemical hyperandrogenism (HA) is heterogeneous and cannot be ascertained, especially in normoandrogenic women. Objectives Evaluate any association between clinical phenotypes and biochemical parameters of HA in premenopausal women with female pattern hair loss (FPHL). Materials and methods A cross-sectional observational study on 362 women, who were assessed for general characteristics, the different FPHL severities by Sinclair's score, hirsutism by modified Ferriman-Gallwey (mFG) score. Evaluation for biochemical HA included total, calculated free and bioavailable testosterone (TT), free testosterone (FT), and bioavailable testosterone (BT), respectively, and dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate. The variables of clinical HA were FPHL, hirsutism, and acne. Results The enrolled young premenopausal women's age range was (14-47 years). Around 78% were overweight or obese women. Eighty-percent of women had a mild FPHL, with a median of three years, where 2/3 of women had a duration <3 years with no significant relationship to FPHL severity. About 73% of women had either a mild to moderate hirsutism, and around 16% had acne. The biochemical HA was confirmed in around 52% of women (n=188), who show high levels of calculated FT. The calculated BT is high in 78.5% of women (n=284). The means of HA's biochemical indicators were in their reference ranges or slightly above, with no specific change pattern with the corresponding FPHL severity. None of these parameters had a significant relationship with the severity of FPHL. The FPHL duration was not affected by any presumed variable of clinical or biochemical HA. Conclusions FPHL severity was associated with other clinical HA signs like hirsutism and acne, but not to HA's biochemical parameter. Other parameters, like sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG), and BMI, had no significant relation to the FPHL severity.

Abstract:Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) presents with diffuse thinning over the mid-frontal scalp, for which various treatment modalities have been tried. Although currently, oral 5 α-reductase inhibitors such as finasteride are being used, their clinical efficacy remains controversial. We retrospectively investigated 544 premenopausal or postmenopausal patients with FPHL who were prescribed finasteride at a dose of 2.5 mg/day. Our study excluded patients with a follow-up period of < 3 months and patients who were prescribed other FPHL treatment modalities including topical minoxidil. Finally, 112 patients were evaluated based on their medical records and clinical photographs. Based on assessment using the Ludwig scale at the time of their initial visit, among 112 patients studied, 59 patients were classified as belonging to grade I, 47 were grade II, and 6 were grade III. Using global photographs, we found that 33 (29.5%) of the 112 patients studied showed slight improvement, 73 (65.2%) showed significant improvement, whereas no change was recorded in 6 (5.4%). We could demonstrate efficacy of administration of finasteride at a dose of 2.5 mg/day for patients with FPHL and also found that finasteride has a better effect on hair growth when patients had a lower Ludwig score and an older age at onset.

Abstract:Background and Aim: Most women who experience diffuse hair loss suffer from female-pattern hair loss (FPHL). Several mechanisms other than androgen have been suggested as contributing to the process. Serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D [25-(OH) D] has been associated with other hair disorders. The present study aimed to assess the female-pattern hair loss possible association with variation in serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels. Patients and Methods: This case-control study was conducted on 72 FPHL diagnosed female patients attending dermatology department of Tertiary Care Hospitals in Jamshoro and Karachi from November 2021 to October 2022. Females aged 18-40 years with skin prototypes III and IV were enrolled. About 72 healthy females were considered as control group. Study protocol was approved by the institutional research and ethical committee. Careful history, socioeconomic status, FPHL family history, menstrual history, and drug intake were recorded from cases and control. Patients were classified as having stage I, II, or III FPHL based on a clinical evaluation of the pattern of hair loss using Ludwig's scale. 25-OHD levels over a period of 4 months were measured to minimize seasonal bias. Females with 25-OHD levels 30 ng/ml, and intoxication >150 ng/ml. SPSS version 26 was used for data analysis. Results: The overall mean age was 28.6±2.4 years. Age-wise distribution of patients were as follows: 9 (12.5%) in 18-25 years, 24 (33.3%) in 26-30 years, 21 (29.2%) in 31-35 years, and 18 (25%) 36-40 years. Serum 25-(OH) D levels in FPHL patients were significantly lower (15.4 ± 8.25 ng/ml) than in controls (46.42 ± 19.92 ng/ml). The mean vitamin D level did not differ significantly between patients with and without family history (14.46 ± 8.62 and 13.9 ± 8.24 ng/ml, respectively. The mean vitamin D level differed significantly between the three Ludwig's degrees (13.15 ± 8.49, 14.23 ± 6.74, and 24.9 ± 6.42 ng/ml, respectively): between degrees I and III, as well as between degrees II and III. Conclusion: The present study showed that hair loss varied significantly across all age groups. Premenopausal women with vitamin D deficiency have higher rates of hair loss, which is most profound in the age groups 26-30, followed by 25-30. Furthermore, changes in serum 25-(OH) D levels, whether deficient or sufficient, may play a role in the etiology of FPHL. Abstract:Female pattern hair loss (FPHL) is nonscarring progressive thinning of hair with gradual decrease in the number of hair, especially in the frontal, central, and parietal scalp, due to a process known as follicular miniaturization. The etiopathogenesis of FPHL is complex with multiple factors such as genetics, inflammation, hormones, and environment playing role in it. It usually manifests as slowly progressive hair thinning, mainly over the vertex and upper parietal scalp, the frontal hairline is often spared and the miniaturization is also not as severe as in men. A thorough history, clinical examination, hair loss evaluation tests, dermoscopy, and scalp biopsy can help in establishing the diagnosis. Various biochemical tests may be needed in patients with hyperandrogenism. The treatment includes medical and surgical modalities. Topical minoxidil is still considered the first line of treatment. Along with medical therapy, cosmetic camouflage may also be needed in some cases.
