Abstract:Low completion rates of math courses pose a major challenge for community college students’ educational progress and outcomes. Contextualized instruction has been identified as a promising approach to removing some of the longstanding barriers within math teaching and learning. Still, the empirical base on this topic remains small, with particularly little evidence on how exposure to math contextualization relates to students’ longer-term educational outcomes, which bear important implications for institutions’ performance metrics and policymaking. We contribute new research on this front by examining how exposure to math contextualization relates to a range of interim and longer-term educational outcomes at a large community college in a Midwestern state. We applied the genetic matching approach to construct a study sample that was balanced in background characteristics between the student group receiving contextualized math instruction and their counterparts enrolled in traditional math courses. We adopted a set of regression analyses based on the matched sample, and found a significant positive relationship between exposure to math contextualization and students’ outcome measures, including course performance, term GPA, continuous postsecondary enrollment, credential completion, and upward transfer.
Mindsets, contexts, and college enrollment: Taking the long view on growth mindset beliefs at the transition to high school

Abstract:Socioeconomic disparities in academic progress have persisted throughout the history of the United States, and growth mindset interventions—which shift beliefs about the malleability of intelligence—have shown promise in reducing these disparities. Both the study of such disparities and how to remedy them can benefit from taking the "long view" on adolescent development, following the tradition of John Schulenberg. To do so, this study focuses on the role of growth mindsets in short‐term academic progress during the transition to high school as a contributor to longer‐term educational attainment. Guided by the Mindset × Context perspective, we analyzed new follow‐up data to a one‐year nationally representative study of ninth graders (National Study of Learning Mindsets, n = 10,013; 50% female; 53% white; 63% from lower‐SES backgrounds). A conservative Bayesian analysis revealed that adolescents' growth mindset beliefs at the beginning of ninth grade predicted their enrollment in college 4 years later. These patterns were stronger for adolescents from lower‐SES backgrounds, and there was some evidence that the ninth‐grade math teacher's support for the growth mindset moderated student mindset effects. Thus, a time‐specific combination of student and teacher might alter long‐term trajectories by enabling adolescents to develop and use beliefs at a critical transition point that supports a cumulative pathway of course‐taking and achievement into college. Notably, growth mindset became less predictive of college enrollment after the onset of the COVID‐19 pandemic, which occurred in the second year of college and introduced structural barriers to college persistence.

Predicting Academic Performance in Mathematics through Online Learning Constructs and Content Proficiencies

Abstract:This study explores the evaluation of online distance learning as a significant alternative to traditional education, specifically focusing on its application in Grade 11 mathematics education. The research, conducted in six public senior high schools in Quezon City District IV, employs a descriptive-correlational design and involves 873 Grade 11 students attending online classes. Constructs of online learning, including motivation, access and use of technology, perception, self-directed learning, and online teaching approaches, were examined to understand their impact on mathematics academic performance. The findings revealed that students strongly embraced self-directed learning in the online environment, demonstrating high motivation. Positive feedback was observed towards technology use, online teaching approaches, and the overall perception of online learning. Academic performance was generally satisfactory, with diverse achievements in content-based competencies like Functions and Their Graphs, Mathematics of Investment, and Math Logic. Significant low positive relationships were identified between mathematics academic performance and online learning constructs, as well as content-based competencies. Key predictors of mathematics academic performance included motivation, technology access and use, and online teaching approaches. However, the perception of online learning and self-directed learning did not significantly predict academic performance. These findings contribute to a multiple linear regression model explaining 24% of the variance, highlighting the need to optimize online learning for enhanced mathematics academic performance. Recommendations include students enhancing technology skills and self-directed learning, considering specialized mathematics classes, teachers intensifying instruction in crucial areas, and the Department of Education sustaining the Open High School program while simplifying essential learning competencies in General Mathematics. Future research should explore additional online learning factors for a comprehensive understanding of the subject.
Math mindsets in elementary school students: testing two conceptualizations of mindsets and their links with achievement and self-concept

Abstract:Math mindsets are mathematical abilities beliefs that can take two forms: growth (i.e., abilities can develop) and fixed (i.e., abilities are innate). Math mindsets during elementary school received little attention, especially among younger students. This study examined math mindsets and tested a mediation model in which math achievement predicted math mindsets via math self-concept. Elementary students ( N = 220) from grades 1–6 completed a questionnaire in class. Results showed that growth and fixed math mindsets can be measured and distinguished in younger students, younger students endorsed growth math mindset more strongly than older students, and girls endorsed it more strongly than boys. Structural equation modeling showed that math achievement positively and directly link on both dimensions of math self-concept (affect and competency), and that affect directly link to a stronger adoption of a growth math mindset while competency negatively and directly link on growth and fixed math mindsets. Findings have important implications for mindset theory and interventions.

Abstract:Motivation is a key factor in engagement, achievement, and career choices in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). While existing research has focused on student motivation toward math in formal school programs, new work is needed that focuses on motivation for those involved in informal STEM programs. Specifically, the role of math mindset and perceived inclusivity of informal STEM sites (to those of varying gender and ethnic backgrounds) on longitudinal trajectories of adolescents’ math motivation has not been explored. This study investigates longitudinal changes in math expectancy, interest, and utility values and the effects of math fixed mindset, math growth mindset, and perceptions of the inclusivity of informal STEM learning sites on these changes for adolescents participating in STEM programs at these informal sites in the United Kingdom and the United States (n = 249, MT1age = 15.2, SD = 1.59). Three latent growth curve models were tested. The data suggest that math expectancy, interest, and utility values declined over three years. Growth mindset positively predicted changes in utility, while fixed mindset negatively predicted changes in utility. Inclusivity positively influenced the initial levels of utility. Girls reported lower initial expectancy than boys. Age influenced both the initial levels and rate of change for expectancy. Older adolescents had lower levels of expectancy compared to their younger counterparts; however, they had a less steep decline in expectancy over three years. These findings suggest that designing inclusive learning environments and promoting growth mindset may encourage math motivation.

Abstract:Findings from recent studies suggest that students’ pathways into mathematics-related careers begin as early as middle school when students are forming lasting self-perceptions of their academic abilities. Middle school is also a time when students begin making choices about future coursework in math, science, and technology that will have long-term implications for their academic and career achievements. Because important self-efficacy beliefs are forming and young adolescents are making decisions that impact career choice, it is important to provide support for students early in their schooling to maximize student potential and consideration of mathematics education and mathematics-related careers. Supporting self-efficacy for math is important for most middle school students but may be crucial for girls who often experience significant declines in their feelings of competence in this domain. Middle school teachers have an opportunity to support student learning beyond the academic curriculum, and this article describes how a self-efficacy intervention can support important skills, attitudes, and dispositions necessary for mathematics achievement and consideration of mathematics-related careers.
Racial stereotype and Black adolescents' math achievement: Unpacking the socio-cognitive mechanisms

Abstract:Racial stereotypes are salient to Black adolescents and to the academic domain of mathematics; however, few studies have examined the socio-cognitive mechanisms through which racial stereotypes impact math achievement. This 2-year longitudinal study (N = 790 Grade 6, 8, and 10 students during Year 1; 50.7% girls and 49.3% boys) investigated (a) the extent to which the endorsement of positively and negatively biased racial stereotypes predicted Black adolescents' math performance through their cognitive engagement and ability mindset and (b) whether gender and ethnic-racial identity moderated these links. Results suggested that endorsement of negatively biased stereotypes was associated with diminished cognitive engagement and lower math scores across 2 years (p < .05). Additionally, adolescents' ethnic-racial identity commitment moderated the negative links between stereotype endorsement and math cognitive engagement in Year 2 (p < .05). When considering the mediating role of math ability mindsets, the endorsement of both positively and negatively biased racial stereotypes operated on math performance via its links to stronger fixed ability mindset beliefs in both years (p < .05). Gender also moderated the effects of racial stereotype endorsement on math mindset beliefs in Year 1 (p < .01). This study's findings advance the field's understanding of the psychosocial mechanisms through which racial stereotypes operate, thus enabling educators to develop tailored practices that facilitate equitable access to math learning opportunities.

Abstract:Despite longstanding efforts in the K-12 STEM education community to create meaningful mathematical experiences across disciplines, mathematics continues to be a siloed subject which is tracked based on ability. With an increasing number of high-achieving students enrolling in Algebra I in Grade 7 or earlier, there is a need for research on the readiness of accelerated STEM-intending students to persist in mathematics at the college level. A mathematical mindset framework was employed to explore the relationships between level of Algebra I acceleration, student (n = 2111) and instructor (n = 141) beliefs about sense-making and mistake-making, and attitudes in first-semester college calculus. Findings from a series of multilevel analyses indicate that interactions between student mathematical mindset and perceived progressive teaching practices influence attitudes toward mathematics. While student-centered instruction had a slightly negative effect on attitude, there was a differential effect in relation to student beliefs about sense-making as a metric of success in mathematics. These findings contribute to empirical understandings of mathematical mindset and the complex transition from high school calculus to college calculus. Implications for interdisciplinary STEM education and persistence in STEM undergraduate study are discussed.

Abstract:A growth-mindset intervention teaches the belief that intellectual abilities can be developed. Where does the intervention work best? Prior research examined school-level moderators using data from the National Study of Learning Mindsets (NSLM), which delivered a short growth-mindset intervention during the first year of high school. In the present research, we used data from the NSLM to examine moderation by teachers’ mindsets and answer a new question: Can students independently implement their growth mindsets in virtually any classroom culture, or must students’ growth mindsets be supported by their teacher’s own growth mindsets (i.e., the mindset-plus-supportive-context hypothesis)? The present analysis (9,167 student records matched with 223 math teachers) supported the latter hypothesis. This result stood up to potentially confounding teacher factors and to a conservative Bayesian analysis. Thus, sustaining growth-mindset effects may require contextual supports that allow the proffered beliefs to take root and flourish.

Abstract:<p>This article used self‐regulated learning as a theoretical lens to examine the individual and interactive associations between a growth mindset and metacognition on math engagement for adolescent students from socioeconomically disadvantaged schools. Across three longitudinal studies with 207, 897, and 2,325 11‐ to 15‐year‐old adolescents, students' beliefs that intelligence is malleable and capable of growth over time only predicted higher math engagement among students possessing the metacognitive skills to reflect upon and be aware of their learning progress. The results suggest that metacognitive skills may be necessary for students to realize their growth mindset. Thus, growth mindsets and metacognitive skills should be promoted together to capitalize on the mutually reinforcing effects of each, especially among students in socioeconomically disadvantaged schools.</p>

Creating Mathematical Futures through an Equitable Teaching Approach: The Case of Railside School

Abstract:Background/Context School tracking practices have been documented repeatedly as having negative effects on students’ identity development and attainment, particularly for those students placed in lower tracks. Despite this documentation, tracking persists as a normative practice in American high schools, perhaps in part because we have few models of how departments and teachers can successfully organize instruction in heterogeneous, high school mathematics classes. This paper offers one such model through a qualitative and quantitative analysis. Focus of Study In an effort to better the field's understanding of equitable and successful teaching, we conducted a longitudinal study of three high schools. At one school, Railside, students demonstrated greater gains in achievement than students at the other two schools and higher overall achievement on a number of measures. Furthermore, achievement gaps among various ethnic groups at Railside that were present on incoming assessments disappeared in nearly all cases by the end of the second year. This paper provides an analysis of Railside's success and identifies factors that contributed to this success. Participants Participants included approximately 700 students as they progressed through three California high schools. Railside was an urban high school with an ethnically, linguistically, and economically diverse student body. Greendale was situated in a coastal community with a more homogeneous, primarily White student body. Hilltop was a rural high school with primarily White and Latino/a students. Research Design This longitudinal, multiple case study employed mixed methods. Three schools were chosen to offer a range of curricular programs and varied student populations. Student achievement and attitudinal data were evaluated using statistical techniques, whereas teacher and student practices were documented using qualitative analytic techniques such as coding. Findings/Results One of the findings of the study was the success of Railside school, where the mathematics department taught heterogeneous classes using a reform-oriented approach. Compared with the other two schools in the study, Railside students learned more, enjoyed mathematics more and progressed to higher mathematics levels. This paper presents large-scale evidence of these important achievements and provides detailed analyses of the ways that the Railside teachers brought them about, with a focus on the teaching and learning interactions within the classrooms.

Abstract:Educational outcomes remain highly unequal within and across nations. Students' mindsets-their beliefs about whether intellectual abilities can be developed-have been identified as a potential lever for making adolescents' academic outcomes more equitable. Recent research, however, suggests that intervention programs aimed at changing students' mindsets should be supplemented by programs aimed at the changing the mindset culture, which is defined as the shared set of beliefs about learning in a school or classroom. This paper reviews the theoretical and empirical origin of the mindset culture and examines its potential to reduce group-based inequalities in education. In particular, experiments have identified two broad ways the mindset culture is communicated by teachers: via informal messages about growth (e.g., that all students will be helped to learn and succeed), and formal opportunities to improve (e.g., learning-focused grading policies and opportunities to revise and earn credit). New field experiments, applying techniques from behavioral science, have also revealed effective ways to influence teachers' culture-creating behaviors. This paper describes recent breakthroughs in the U.S. educational context and discusses how lessons from these studies might be applied in future, global collaborations with researchers and practitioners.
[Effect of hypotensive anesthesia on tissue oxygen tension of the heart, kidney and liver].

Abstract:The effects of hypotensive anesthesia by prostaglandin E1 (PGE1: 8 dogs) or trimetaphan (TMP: 8 dogs) on tissue oxygenation were studied in 16 mongrel dogs anesthetized with pentobarbital. Mean blood pressure (MBP), heart rate (HR), cardiac output (CO), blood gases (BG), the blood flow and tissue oxygen tension of the heart, the kidney and the liver were measured. The blood flow and oxygen tension were measured by electromagnetic flowmeters and by polarographic oxygen electrodes respectively. PGE1 or TMP was injected intravenously to decrease MBP by 30%. MBP, CO, HR and BG of PGE1 were not significantly different with those of TMP. Coronary blood flow decreased for 12% with PGE1 and for 33% with TMP. Though blood flows of the renal and the hepatic arteries were well maintained with PGE1, they decreased for 36% and 34% respectively with TMP. Oxygen tensions of the myocardium (both outer and inner layers) and the liver were well maintained with PGE1. But with TMP, oxygen tension decreased for 23% in outer layer, for 16% in inner layer and for 31% in the liver. Oxygen tension of the kidney remained unchanged with PGE1 and TMP. The results suggest that PGE1 is more useful for the maintenance of the tissue oxygenation than TMP during hypotensive anesthesia.
A latent growth moderated mediation model of math achievement and postsecondary attainment: Focusing on context-invariant predictors.

Abstract:Math proficiency is a strong predictor of postsecondary attainment, yet cross-national comparative assessments show that U.S. students consistently score below many of their peers, especially those in East Asia. Similar math achievement disparities exist across ethnic/racial groups within the U.S., where Asian American students routinely outperform their White and Hispanic counterparts. The stability of math achievement rankings within and across countries suggests that several predictors are transportable and context-invariant, as they forecast math achievement even following striking shifts in contextual characteristics, such as country of residence, language, or school system. We evaluated a multiple mediator model of math achievement and postsecondary attainment that incorporates several of these predictors, using cross-sectional international data (PISA-2012) and longitudinal U.S. data (NELS and ELS). In all samples and data sets, the model explained substantial portions of the variance in educational outcomes. Parents’ educational aspirations for their children were strongly associated with students’ own aspirations which, in turn, were powerful predictors of math achievement and postsecondary attainment—both directly, and through their influence on important mediators such as math self-perception. Longitudinal relations identified in an older national dataset (NELS) were generally cross-validated in ELS. Moreover, in both data sets, construct relations were found to be largely invariant across racial/ethnic groups. Although additional research is needed to clarify the mechanisms underlying group disparities, the outstanding fit of the model (across samples and data sets) provides the empirical foundation for educational interventions that are likely to help all students, regardless of their ethnicity or national origin.

Abstract:The current study is a conceptual replication of the influence of an advanced educational opportunity and several student propensities to learn on a college-readiness assessment for mathematics (ACT scores) among an important and under-studied group of students. We focused on a sample of predominantly Black students from economically-disadvantaged homes in the U.S. ( n = 329; 80% Black, 59% female, 66% whose parents had a high-school diploma or less). Accelerated course placement (high-school math course in 8th grade) was a unique predictor of math ACT scores above and beyond prior math achievement and other variables ( B = 1.5). In line with a fade-out model, executive function skill in 6th grade was not a unique predictor with other predictors in the model. In line with emerging findings with marginalized students, mathematics self-concept in 6th grade was also not a unique predictor. Finally, students' mathematics achievement at age 4 predicted their math ACT scores in 12th grade ( B = .69), as did their middle-school mathematics achievement in number, algebra, and geometry ( B = .43–.67), which mediated the relation between mathematics achievement at age 4 and math ACT scores. Findings highlight the importance of advanced academic opportunities, which national data indicates marginalized students are less likely to receive, the diminishing role of individual differences in executive function skill as children develop domain knowledge, the diminished role of math self-concept for predicting achievement among marginalized students, and the strong stability in math achievement.

Abstract:Past research has shown that growth mindset and motivational beliefs have an important role in math and science career interest in adolescence. Drawing on situated expectancy-value theory (SEVT), this study extends these findings by investigating the role of parental motivational beliefs (e.g., expectancy beliefs, utility values) and parent growth mindset in math on adolescent career interest in math-intensive fields (e.g., mathematics, computer science, statistics, and engineering; MCSE) through adolescent motivational beliefs in math. Structural equation modeling was used to test the hypothesized model using data from 290 adolescents (201 girls, 69.3%; M age = 15.20), who participate in informal STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) youth programs, and their parents (162 parents, 87.7% female) in the United Kingdom and the United States. As hypothesized, adolescent expectancy beliefs, utility values, and growth mindset in math had a significant direct effect on MCSE career interest. Further, there was a significant indirect effect of parental expectancy beliefs in math on MCSE career interest through adolescents’ expectancy beliefs. Similarly, there was a significant indirect effect from parental utility values in math to MCSE career interest through adolescents’ utility values. The findings suggest that parents’ math motivational beliefs play a critical role in adolescent math motivational beliefs and their career interest in math-intensive fields.

Abstract:Introduction: It has been suggested that students with growth mindsets are more likely to achieve better mathematics learning results than their counterparts with fixed mindsets. However, inconsistent and some even contradictory results have been reported in recent studies which examined the associations between growth mindset and mathematics achievements, suggesting the complexity regarding the effects of growth mindset on academic achievements. Methods: This study aims to examine students' growth mindsets, failure attributions, intrinsic motivation, mathematics self-efficacy, mathematics anxiety and mathematics achievements in one model to capture the sophisticated functioning processes of growth mindset. A total number of 266 middle school students in China participated in this study. Students' mindset and related variables (i.e.,motivations to learn mathematics, attributions of failure in mathematics, mathematics anxiety, mathematics self-efficacy) were measured at year 7, the first year of junior middle school in China. These students' mathematics learning outcomes were tracked from year 7 to year 9, the end of junior middle school. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was used to investigate the relations among students' growth mindsets, failure attributions, intrinsic motivation, mathematics self-efficacy, mathematics anxiety and mathematics achievements. Results: The results show that: (1) growth mindset doesn't directly predict mathematics achievements; (2) growth mindset indirectly influences mathematics achievements through intrinsic motivation; (3) failure attributions and mathematics self-efficacy sequentially mediate the association between growth mindset mathematics achievements; (4) failure attributions and mathematics anxiety sequentially mediate the relationship between growth mindset mathematics achievements. Discussion: The results of this study contribute a better understanding about how growth mindsets make impacts on middle school students' mathematics achievements. These findings have important implications for mathematics education in that we could not simply cultivate students' growth mindset in schools with expectations of higher mathematics learning outcomes. Instead, along with the growth mindset intervention, it is fundamental to make interventions on students' intrinsic motivation, failure attribution, mathematics self-efficacy, and mathematics anxiety in mathematics teaching and learning.

Abstract:In this international, longitudinal study, we explored gender differences in, and gendered relationships among, math-related motivations emphasized in the Eccles (Parsons) et al. (1983) expectancy-value framework, high school math participation, educational aspirations, and career plans. Participants were from Australia, Canada, and the United States (Ns = 358, 471, 418, respectively) in Grades 9/10 at Time 1 and Grades 11/12 at Time 2. The 3 samples came from suburban middle to upper-middle socioeconomic backgrounds, primarily of Anglo-European descent. Multivariate analyses of variance revealed stereotypic gender differences in educational and occupational outcomes only among the Australian sample. Multigroup structural equation models identified latent mean differences where male adolescents held higher intrinsic value for math in the Australian sample and higher ability/success expectancy in both North American samples. Ability/success expectancy was a key predictor in the North American samples, in contrast to intrinsic value in the Australian sample. Attainment/utility ("importance") values were more important for female adolescents' career choices, except in the Australian sample. Findings are interpreted in relation to gender socialization practices, degree and type of early choice, and specialization across settings. Abstract:Parents' beliefs about the nature of ability are communicated to their children through parent–child interactions. Parental mindsets are one of the parental beliefs that have received increasing attention over recent years. However, their role in children's motivation and achievement outcomes remains relatively underexplored. Moreover, most existing studies have measured parental mindsets as either reported by parents themselves or perceived by children only, making it difficult to develop a comprehensive understanding of their role. Yet, parents' mindsets and children's perceptions of their parents' mindsets may not be identical, and one may be more important than the other in shaping children's motivation and achievement. Using the data from 507 third- and fourth-graders and their parents in Korea, we examined how parents' growth and fixed mindsets, both self-reported and child-perceived, predicted children's achievement goals, persistence, and achievement in mathematics. Whereas the growth and fixed mindsets of parents correlated negatively with each other, there was no significant relationship between self-reported and child-perceived parental mindsets. Parents' growth mindset positively predicted children's mastery goals. In contrast, parents' fixed mindset negatively predicted children's mastery goals and positively predicted children's ability-focused and normative performance goals. Children's mastery goals in turn positively predicted their persistence and achievement. The indirect paths from parental mindsets to children's persistence and achievement through children's mastery goals were also significant. In general, the child-perceived mindsets of parents demonstrated a stronger predictive power than the self-reported mindsets of parents. The underexplored role of parental mindsets is discussed concerning children's achievement goal adoption and learning.
