Abstract:Sonication-induced scission was used to obtain carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with aspect ratios averaging 50 (short CNTs) and 500 (long CNTs). A series of carbon nanotube/epoxy nanocomposite samples with CNT content up to 1.0wt.% were prepared using these tubes. Electrical and thermal characterisation was conducted to identify changes in such properties and the extent of these changes as a function of aspect ratio and CNT content. Results show significantly enhanced electrical conductivities and a modest increase in the thermal conductivities in both sets of samples. Further analysis of electrical conductivity of the long CNT and short CNT-based epoxy nanocomposites was carried out in order to understand their viability for EMI shielding and electrostatic dissipation applications. The processing behaviour of the long and short CNT-based composites and the corresponding electrical properties is also discussed which will help the researchers to select the right type of carbon nanotube aspect ratio achieve specific electrical properties as well as good processing behaviour.
Single Carbon Fiber/Acid-Treated CNT-Epoxy Composites by Electro- Micromechanical Technique and Wettability Test for Dispersion and Self-Sensing

Abstract:Dispersion and self-sensing evaluation for single-carbon fiber reinforced in three different acid-treated CNT-epoxy nanocomposites were investigated by electro-micromechanical techniques and wettability tests. Self-sensing based on contact resistivity exhibited more noise for single carbon fi- ber/acid-treated CNT-epoxy composites than it did for untreated CNT. However, the apparent modulus was higher the acid treated case than the untreated case which is attributed to better stress transfer. The interfacial shear strength (IFSS) between carbon fibers and the CNT-epoxy was lower than that between carbon fiber and neat epoxy due to the increased viscosity associated with the addition of the CNT. The CNT-epoxy nanocomposite exhibited more hydrophobicity than did neat epoxy. Change in the thermody- namic work of adhesion was consistent with changes in the IFSS but disproportional to that of the appa- rent modulus. The optimum condition of acid treatment on the need can be obtained instead of the max- imum condition.
Poly(methyl Methacrylate)-Decorated Single Wall Carbon Nanotube/epoxy Nanocomposites with Re-Agglomeration Networks: Rheology and Viscoelastic Damping Performance

Abstract:This work describes the effects of tailoring the morphology of the re-agglomeration network and interfacial bonding by embedding poly(methyl methacrylate) decorated single wall nanotubes (SWNTs) into an epoxy resin. We report the time history of the re-agglomerations in the resin, and the rheological properties of the uncured suspensions to assess the effectiveness of the carbon nanotubes crosslinking on the curing process. A dispersion index was used to quantitatively evaluate the level of re-agglomeration. Both the pristine SWNTs and the polymer decorated SWNTs showed the effectiveness of re-agglomeration in improving rheological storage and loss modulus up to 770% and 50% respectively comparing with samples containing uniformly dispersed filler structure, suggested a novel filler arrangement for optimum composites damping performance. Dynamic mechanical analyser tests of the cured composites show that the re-agglomeration provides an increase of the energy dissipation capability when an appropriate interfacial bonding is in place. These results suggest that the morphology of re-agglomerates offers an effective interesting nano-reinforcement architecture for composites targeted at energy absorption and vibration damping.
Enhanced thermomechanical properties of epoxy-multiwalled CNT nano-composites

Abstract:Viscoelastic properties of thermo-set composites using an epoxy matrix reinforced with pristine CNT and silane-modified MWCNT at different concentrations (0%, 1%, 2% and 4%) were studied to observe the enhanced thermal and mechanical properties supplemented by the increased interfacial interaction due to CNT modification. The composite with pristine CNT was labeled as EPB-CNT, whereas that with silane-modified carbon nanotubes (CNTs) was referred to as ECB-CNT. The silanes used were glycidyloxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTS) and 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES). Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) was completely cured by Jeffamine D-400 to prepare EJ-0. The amine groups of the 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTS) partially cured the diglycidyl ether of bisphenol-A (DGEBA) in EAJ-0 by a sequential polymerization process, while the methoxy groups subsequently produced a silica network through the sol–gel method. Subsequently, Jeffamine D-400 was used as a curing agent at elevated temperatures for cross-linking and complete curing. EJ-0 and EAJ-0 were considered as neat films of EPB-CNT and ECB-CNT composites, respectively. Tensile and storage modulus tests, thermal property analysis using TGA, and microstructure characterization using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and TEM were all part of the study. Comparing composites with varying percentages and with neat films, the chemically bonded epoxy-silanized MWCNTs (ECB-CNTs) showed improved performance. ECB-CNT 4% had the highest tensile and storage modulus as well as improved thermal stability. Improved filler material distribution and fewer voids were found through microstructure analysis, strengthening the link between the reinforcement and matrix. The results underscore the potential applications of the CNT-enhanced nanocomposites in the engineering fields of automotive, aerospace, radar-absorbing materials and others. This marks a significant development in the field of composite technology to produce durable and effective materials.

Abstract:The modification of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) with amine groups was investigated by FTIR, Raman spectroscopy and XPS after such steps as carboxylation, acylation and amidation. Nanotube-reinforced epoxy polymer composites were prepared by mixing amino-functionalized MWNTs with epoxy resin and curing agent. DSC, TGA, SEM and flexural test were used to investigate the thermal and mechanical properties of the composites. The results showed that amino-functionalized MWNTs could enhance the interfacial adhesion between the nanotubes and the matrix, thus greatly improve the thermal and mechanical properties of the resin epoxy bulk material.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have outstanding characteristics including high mechanical properties, namely tensile strength and elastic modulus,and still remarkable flexibility, excellent thermal and electric conductivities, low percolation thresholds (loading weight at which a sharp drop in resistivity occurs) and high aspect ratios (length to diameter ratio, L/D) while the latter provides the nanotubes with additional advantage over spherical fillers to obtain high property composites. Therefore I CNTs have the potential to act as a reinforcing filler of polymer matrices. The tetraglycidyl-4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane (TGDDM) cured with 4,4'-diaminodiphenylsulphone WDS) and filled with graphite or carbon fibers are commonly used as a polymeric matrix in high performance composites employed in the aircraft and spacecraft industries. In present paper, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) as a nano-filler were incorporated in the TGDDM/DDS epoxy. The thermal properties of the composites were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic thermal analysis (DMTA) and thermal gravitimetric analysis TGA). In addition, the dispersion of MWNTs in the epoxy was also investigated by scanning electron microscopy SEM). In DSC studies, Kissinger and Flynn-Wall-Ozawa (FWO) methods were used to study the nonisothermal cure kinetics of the MWNTs filled TGDDM/DDS composites at different heating rates. The activation energy (E.) of cure reactions of the MWNTs filled epoxy composites was obtained by Kissinger and FWO methods. For all composites, the E. obtained by Kissinger method was slightly less than that of FWO method. With the addition of MWNTs, the E. of the epoxy composites decreased first and then increased with the increase of the MWNTs contents. These results showed that the incorporation of carbon nanotubes accelerated the cure reaction of the TGDDM/DDS epoxy at lower MWNTs content due to the interaction between the hydroxyl groups on the surface of nanotubes and the epoxy. However, due to the high surface energy of carbon nanotubes, the viscosity of MWNTs/epoxy composites increased at higher MWNTs content. Hence, the mobility of hydroxyl groups was hindered, and the reaction energy of composites increased with increasing MWNTs contents. The influence of carbon nanotubes on the thermal stability of the epoxy was studied by TGA. It is shown that MWNTs had little influence on the thermal stability of the cured epoxy. The storage modulus and glass transition temperature of MWNTs filled TGDDM/DDS were investigated by DMTA. It is seen that the storage modulus of TGDDM/DDS system was enhanced with the increasing of MWNTs content, that is, the modulus increased 6.3% and 7.8% at 1 wt % and 5 % MWNTs content, respectively. The glass transition temperature of the epoxy slightly decreased. Furthermore, the DMTA results of MWNTs/TGDDM/DDS composites were compared with that of carbon narrofibers (CNFs)/TGDDM/DDS composites. It was shown that the interactions between CNFs and epoxy were better those between that MWNTs and epoxy. The dispersion of carbon nanotubes in the epoxy was studied by SEM. The SEM results suggest that of MWNTs had poor dispersion in the cured epoxy. However, the radii of carbon nanotubes in the epoxy were greater than those of pure nanotubes. These results show the existence of interaction between carbon nanotubes and epoxy.
Thermo-mechanical properties of epoxy nanocomposites incorporating amino acid and acid functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes

Abstract:In this study, multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were functionalized by both sulfuric/nitric acids and amino acids to form COOH and NH2/COOH/OH groups on their surface, respectively. The functionalized MWCNTs were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy, titration test, thermal gravimetric analysis, and solvent stability test. The results revealed that in each method, the functional groups were successfully attached to the surface of nanotubes. Acid treatment grafted more oxygen-containing groups compared to commercial carboxylated MWCNTs. The amino acid functionalized MWCNTs indicated improved stability in different solvents compared to raw and acid treated MWCNTs. These functionalized MWCNTs were incorporated into epoxy resin and the properties of the nanocomposites were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy, tensile test, dynamic mechanical thermal analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, and thermogravimetric analysis. The morphology of the nanocomposites revealed that acid and amino acid treated samples had better interaction with the epoxy resin. Compared to epoxy sample contained raw MWCNT (control) and commercial carboxylated MWCNTs, the addition of functionalized MWCNTs to the epoxy resin improved the tensile strength by 39% and 25% (for acid treated) and 46% and 33% (for amino acid treated), respectively. The best tensile properties for acid and amino acid treated samples were reached by MWCNTs acid treated at 110°C for 15 min and MWCNTs treated in a 50 g/L aqueous solution of amino acid, respectively. Storage modulus of the epoxy samples which contained acid and amino acid treated MWCNTs were 1560 and 1900 MPa, respectively. The glass rubber transition temperature ( T g ) of the epoxy samples containing acid and amino acid treated nanotubes were increased by 1.1°C and 5.9°C, respectively, compared to the control sample. Therefore, based on these mechanical properties, the epoxy samples containing nanotubes functionalized by amino acid exhibited the highest performance in the epoxy nanocomposite. Incorporating acid and amino acid treated MWCNTs accelerated the curing process of epoxy where the curing temperature decreased by 9.1°C and 13.3°C, respectively. Because of the reaction between amine groups grafted on MWCNTs in the amino acid treatment and epoxide groups of the epoxy resin, this acceleration was more significant in the case of amino acid sample. Note that addition of functionalized MWCNTs to epoxy resin did not lead to increased thermal stability.

Abstract:Targeting at the brittleness of cured epoxy (EP), functionalized CNTs were integrated into the thermoset to make high-performance CNTs/EP nano-composites.In this investigation, polymaleic acid modified CNTs with a high surface grafting ratio (PMA-CNTs)was prepared through the plasma induced grafting technique , then further functionalized with amino groups to yield A-PMA-CNTs, which were then incorporated into epoxy matrix. Characterization of mechanical properties and heat resistance of the A-PMA-CNTs/EP nanocomposites indicates that A-PMA-CNTs can significantly strengthen and toughen the epoxy resin, with an increased glass transition temperature.
Influence of Carbon Nanotube Coatings on Carbon Fiber by Ultrasonically Assisted Electrophoretic Deposition on Its Composite Interfacial Property.

Abstract:Carbon nanotube (CNT) coatings were utilized to enhance the interfacial properties of carbon fiber (CF)/epoxy(EP) composites by ultrasonically assisted electrophoretic deposition (EPD). A characterization of the CF surface properties was done before and after coating (surface chemistry, surface morphologies, and surface energy). The result shows that oxygenated groups concentrations of the CF surfaces experienced significant increases from 12.11% to 24.78%. Moreover, the uniform and homogeneous CNT films were tightly attached on the surface of CF, and the surface wettability of CF is significant improved by enhanced surface free energy when introduced ultrasonic during the EPD process. In addition, the interlaminar shear strength (ILSS) and water absorption of CF/EP composite were measured. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) revealed that the fracture mechanisms of the new interface layer formed by depositing CNTs on the CF surface contributed to the enhancement of the mechanical performance of the epoxy. This means that the efficient method to improve interfacial performance of composites has shown great commercial application potential.

Abstract:The thermal properties of carbon nanofibers (CNF)/epoxy composites, composed of tetraglycidyl-4,4'-diaminodiphenylmethane (TGDDM) resin and 4,4'-diaminodiphenylsulfone (DDS) as a curing agent, were investigated with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis, and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. DSC results showed that the presence of CNF had no pronounced influence on the heat of the cure reaction. However, the incorporation of CNF slightly improved the thermal stability of the epoxy. Furthermore, the storage modulus of the TGDDM/DDS epoxy was significantly enhanced, whereas the glass-transition temperature was not significantly affected, upon the incorporation of CNFs. The storage modulus of 5 wt % CNF/epoxy composites at 25 degrees C was increased by 35% in comparison with that of the pure epoxy. (c) 2006 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:ABSTRACTAmino‐functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT‐NH2s) as nanofillers were incorporated into diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) toughened with amine‐terminated butadiene–acrylonitrile (ATBN). The curing kinetics, glass‐transition temperature (Tg), thermal stability, mechanical properties, and morphology of DGEBA/ATBN/MWCNT‐NH2 nanocomposites were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis, a universal test machine, and scanning electron microscopy. DSC dynamic kinetic studies showed that the addition of MWCNT‐NH2s accelerated the curing reaction of the ATBN‐toughened epoxy resin. DSC results revealed that the Tg of the rubber‐toughened epoxy nanocomposites decreased nearly 10°C with 2 wt % MWCNT‐NH2s. The thermogravimetric results show that the addition of MWCNT‐NH2s enhanced the thermal stability of the ATBN‐toughened epoxy resin. The tensile strength, flexural strength, and flexural modulus of the DGEBA/ATBN/MWCNT‐NH2 nanocomposites increased increasing MWCNT‐NH2 contents, whereas the addition of the MWCNT‐NH2s slightly decreased the elongation at break of the rubber‐toughened epoxy. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Insight into the mechanical properties and thermal expansion behavior of epoxy nanocomposites reinforced with multi‐walled carbon nanotube solvent‐free nanofluids

Abstract:Preparation and performance studies of MWCNTs NFs/EP composites. Epoxy resin (EP) is a promising material that exhibits great potential in the fields of packaging and adhesion. However, reducing its brittleness and coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) at low filler content is still a challenge. To address this problem, three types of MWCNTs nanofluids (MWCNTs NFs) with different shell structures were designed to modify epoxy resin. With the addition of 1 wt% MWCNTs‐M1, the compression, impact, and lap shear strength of the composites increased to 88.97 MPa, 81.39 kJ/m2, 12.69 MPa, respectively, which are 21.7%, 66.1%, and 58.0% higher than pure epoxy. Meanwhile, incorporating MWCNTs NFs also improved the CTE and thermal conductivity, with a 19.7% decrease in CTE and a 40% improvement in thermal conductivity at 2 wt% NFs content. Particularly, the effect of MWCNTs NFs structure on the composite properties was explored, which can be an available reference for designing specific NFs epoxy composites. Highlights Three types of MWCNTs nanofluids with different structures were designed. The MWCNTs NFs were used in packaging materials for the first time. The impact performance of composite has been improved by 66%. The CTE of composite is 19.7% lower than pure EP. The thermal conductivity of the composite increased by 40%.

Abstract:Carboxyl-modified multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT-COOHs) as nanofillers were incorporated into diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGEBA) toughened with carboxyl-terminated butadiene-acrylonitrile (CTBN). The car- boxyl functional carbon nanotubes were characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. Furthermore, cure kinetics, glass transition temperature (Tg), mechanical properties, thermal stability and mor- phology of DGEBA/CTBN/MWCNT-COOHs nanocomposites were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), universal test machine, thermogravimetric analysis and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). DSC kinetic studies showed that the addition of MWCNT-COOHs accelerated the curing reaction of the rubber-toughened epoxy resin. DMA results revealed that Tg of rubber-toughened epoxy nanocomposites lowered with MWCNT-COOH contents. The tensile strength, elongation at break, flexural strength and flexural modulus of DGEBA/ CTBN/MWCNT-COOHs nanocomposites were increased at lower MWCNT-COOH concentration. A homogenous disper- sion of nanocomposites at lower MWCNT-COOH concentration was observed by SEM.
Effect of hydrophilically functionalized carbon nanotubes on the reinforcement of water-borne epoxy resin.

Abstract:Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were modified covalently with hydrophilic polyacrylic acid (PAA) oligomer. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) were used to characterize the modified MWNTs. The solubility of the modified MWNTs in water was determined to be 55.6 mg/mL by UV/vis spectroscopy. They could be dispersed homogeneously in water-borne epoxy resin and improve the mechanical properties of the resin significantly. The reinforcing ability of the modified MWNTs should be contributed by the fine dispersion of the MWNTs in resin matrix and the robust covalent binding formed by the carbon nanotube-bound carboxylic acid and epoxy groups in the resin.

Abstract:Epoxy composite strength improved with CNT, CB, FCB, and CNT‐FCB co‐filler from plastic and tire waste. In this present investigation, epoxy nanocomposites were formulated with multiwalled carbon nanotubes derived from plastic (p‐MWCNTs), carbon black from tires (t‐CB), and a combination of p‐MWCNTs and functionalized carbon black (FCB). A comparative analysis was conducted between the properties of the original composites and epoxy nanocomposites containing a mixture of carbon nanotube (CNT) and FCB. Morphology, carbon content, and oxide content of CB and FCB were assessed using field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and energy‐dispersive x‐ray spectroscopy (EDS or EDX). The dispersion of CNT and the CNT/FCB blend in water was observed using ultraviolet–visible spectroscopy (UV–VIS). Furthermore, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and x‐ray diffraction analyses were performed on CNT, CB, and FCB to comprehend the presence of functional groups and structural changes with chemical treatment. The nanocomposites were created by employing diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A (DGBEA) epoxy resin through a simple sonication and casting method. The tensile strength of CNT/FCB epoxy composites showed a significant increase, rising from 66.26 MPa to 158.48 MPa, marking a 139.17% improvement over pure epoxy. This improvement is likely due to the bonding interaction between the epoxy, FCB, and CNTs which resulted a uniform dispersion of fillers onto epoxy matrix. Conversely, the impact strength initially increased from 112.84 J/m (pure epoxy) to 144.05 J/m (FCB), but then decreased to 115.7 J/m for CNT/FCB composites. FCB demonstrated a 27.65% increase in impact strength compared to pure epoxy. Moreover, the thermal stability of the samples exhibited improvement from neat epoxy to CNT/FCB‐based nanocomposites. Highlights Oxygen content of CB increased from 25.17% to 54.60%. CNT/FCB epoxy composites exhibited a 139.17% increase in tensile strength. FCB epoxy composites shows 27.65% increase in impact strength. Thermal stability of CNT/FCB composites increased by 1.89%. Crosslinking via covalent bonding occurred between FCB and epoxy.

Abstract:In order to enhance the mechanical properties of UV-curable epoxy acrylate (EA)-based coatings, 3-(trimethoxysilyl)propyl methacrylate modified aramid nanofibers (T-ANFs) were synthesized and used as nanofillers to prepare EA/T-ANF nanocomposite films. The morphology of T-ANFs was characterized by transmission electron microscopy. The chemical structure of T-ANFs was analyzed via infrared spectroscopy, confirming successful grafting of methyl methacryloyloxy groups onto the surface of aramid nanofibers (ANFs). Real-time infrared spectroscopy was employed to investigate the influence of ANFs and T-ANFs on the photopolymerization kinetics of the EA film. The results revealed that the addition of ANFs and T-ANFs led to a decrease in the photopolymerization rate during the initial stage but had little impact on the final double bond conversion, with all samples exhibiting a conversion rate of over 83%. The incorporation of ANFs improved the tensile strength of the films while significantly reducing their Young’s modulus. In contrast, the addition of T-ANFs led to a substantial increase in both tensile stress and Young’s modulus of the films. For instance, the tensile strength and Young’s modulus of the 0.1 wt% of T-ANF film increased by 52.7% and 41.6%, respectively, compared to the pure EA film. To further study the dispersion morphology and reinforcement mechanism, the cross-sectional morphology of the films was characterized by scanning electron microscopy.

Abstract:Journal of Reinforced Plastics and Composites, Ahead of Print. In this paper, ultra-low content single-walled carbon nanotube(SWCNT)/epoxy composites were prepared by non-covalent modification of SWCNTs, which improved the dispersion of SWCNTs in epoxy resin, and their properties were investigated. It was shown that the electrical conductivity of SWCNT/epoxy composites increased by 7 orders of magnitude over that of epoxy resin when the content of SWCNTs was 0.005 wt%. The impact strength, tensile strength, and elastic modulus of the materials were increased by 47.9%, 58.9%, and 19.0%, respectively, and the strengthening mechanism of SWCNTs on the matrix was analyzed by SEM. Then SWCNTs were introduced into carbon fiber (CF)/epoxy composites and carbon fiber pressure vessels. In comparison to CF/epoxy composites, the shear and tensile strengths of SWCNT/CF/epoxy composites exhibited an increase of 49.2% and 9.8%, respectively, and the bursting pressure of nano-modified pressure vessels was increased by 15.5%. This study provides a new application method for nano-modified epoxy resins and broadens the application fields of epoxy resins.

Abstract:Carbon nanotubes (CNTs)/epoxy composites are composed of CNTs, epoxy resin, and the interphase between them. The micro-morphology of the interphase has a significant influence on the macro-properties of composites, which is mainly attributed to the difference in the interaction between CNTs and epoxy resin. However, a systematic research on the interaction between CNTs and epoxy resin on composite properties is still insufficient. In this paper, the surface properties of three types of functionalized CNTs, the adhesion forces between the typical functional groups and epoxy groups, as well as the curing characteristics and the thermal properties of the CNTs/epoxy composites were investigated by using experimental methods like surface energy analysis, atomic force microscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. This paper performed direct measurements on the interaction between CNTs with functional groups and epoxy resin. Moreover, it provided several experimental evidences for the mechanism of interfacial interaction affecting thermal properties of CNTs/epoxy composites. It indicated that it is conducive to form covalent bonds at the CNTs/epoxy composite interface when there is a strong interaction between CNTs and epoxy resin, and the thermal property could be improved finally.

Abstract:Human society’s need to build low-weight, high-strength and durable structures has increased the demand for composite materials. In this case, composites are used where high mechanical strength, low weight, sound and thermal insulation properties are required. One of the most important issues now is designing materials and coatings aimed at reducing heat loss and resisting high temperatures. One way to address this problem is to develop a technique for preparing and applying composite materials that slow down their heating applied to a surface. In this study, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) reinforced composites were fabricated using silicone molding to be applied to honeycomb sandwich structures. To determine the effect of CNTs on the thermal behavior of the sandwich panels, different weight percentages of this material (0.025, 0.05. 0.075 wt.%) were added to the epoxy resin. The results showed that the thermal stability of the epoxy composites was directly related to the increase in the percentage of CNTs as the CNT content increased to 0.075 wt.%, and the thermal degradation temperature of the epoxy composites increased by 14 °C. In addition, the energy absorption increased by 4.6% with an increase in CNTs up to 0.075 wt.%. Density measurements showed that the density of the nanocomposite samples increased by adding CNTs to pure epoxy resin. The actual densities of the samples reinforced with 0.025, 0.05, and 0.075 wt.% CNTs are 0.925, 0.926, and 0.927 of the theoretical density, respectively. Since the CNT dispersion uniformity in the epoxy matrix can significantly affect the properties of the composites, in this study, a new method of dispersing CNTs in the epoxy resin matrix resulted in higher thermal conductivity while using lower amounts of CNTs compared to other studies. The storage modulus of the epoxy matrix composites reinforced with 0.05 wt.% in this study was 25.9% and 6.9% higher than that from the previous study reinforced with 0.1 wt.% and 0.25 wt.% CNTs, respectively. Furthermore, the tanδ and loss modulus of the composite reinforced with 0.05 wt.% CNTs in this study were 52% and 54.5% higher than that from the previous study with 0.1 wt.% CNTs, respectively. This study provided an optimal approach for designers and engineers who want to effectively design their composite honeycomb sandwich structure with better thermal properties.

Multiscale interfacial enhancement of surface grown carbon nanotubes carbon fiber composites

Abstract:The interface properties between surface grown carbon nanotubes carbon fiber (CNTs‐CF) and epoxy resin were investigated by different modification methods. The X‐ray photoelectron spectrometer probations show that the pristine CNTs‐CF has very low contents of both oxygen element and active carbon element. Taking the naked carbon fiber (CF) without CNTs grown as a reference, the interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of CNTs‐CF/epoxy is only 5.6% higher. After heat treatment, chemical modification and sizing treatments, the surface chemical activity of CNTs‐CF is improved considerably. In contrast with the IFSS of standard CF/epoxy, the interfacial strength of chemical‐treated CNTs‐CF‐E1/epoxy is increased to 122.8 MPa by 29.7%. The increasing content of the epoxy active groups at the modified CNTs‐CF‐E1 surface is conducive to forming covalent bonds between the epoxy resin and the CNTs‐CF‐E1 surface particularly the activated nanotube surface. The enhancement of CNT/epoxy interface is beneficial to the over whole interface property of the composites. Hence, the compressive and torsion strength of sizing CNTs‐CF‐E1 bundle combined with epoxy resin are increased by 32.4% and 14.1%, respectively. The SEM images show the failure morphologies of different modification methods, and the enhancement mechanism of multiscale interface is further clarified. Compared with chemical treatment, heat treatment can remove the inert amorphous carbon on the CNTs‐CF fiber surface and improve the interface adhesion of CNT/epoxy and CF/epoxy, and surface sizing treatment improves the CF/epoxy interface. The enhancement mechanisms of these modified CNTs‐CFs/epoxy should be ascribed to the competition and synergetic effects of the multiscale interfaces, including CNT/CF, CNT/epoxy, and CF/epoxy.
