Abstract:Polymer coatings for steel anticorrosion are usually susceptible to damage by invading water, oxygen and chloride ions, therefore, it is still a great challenge to reduce these corrosive species to penetrate into coatings/substrate interface. Herein, new binary nanoparticles (SiO 2 and Al 2 O 3 ) filled polydimethylsiloxanes (PDMS) composite coatings are developed for anticorrosion application of 304 stainless-steel (304s) by combining with advantages of PDMS, silica and nano-Al 2 O 3 . Surface wettability, chemical compositions, microstructure, corroded morphologies, mechanical properties and thermal stability of the new PDMS composite coatings on the treated 304s sheets are studied, respectively. Subsequently, corrosion resistances of the 304s sheets treated with the composite coatings are also evaluated in corrosive medium (3.5 wt% NaCl solution) through potentiodynamic polarization tests and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy techniques, respectively. Interestingly, the Al 2 O 3 /SiO 2 /PDMS composite coatings show superior mechanical properties, desirable stability and excellent corrosion resistance compared to the PDMS coating without adding Al 2 O 3 nanoparticles. Moreover, the PDMS composite coating with Al 2 O 3 content of 7.37% displays the best anticorrosion performance due to excellent barrier effect between the 304s sheets and corrosive species. This work not only presents a simple and cost-efficient approach to exploiting hydrophobic PDMS coatings by use of binary nanoparticles and PDMS matrix, but also paves the way to anticorrosive application for 304s.

Abstract:The structure and properties of coatings formed on the structural steel surface are studied. The coatings were applied by non-vacuum electron beam surfacing of Cr–Ni–Ti powder mixtures. The high-quality surface layers have been obtained, the corrosion resistance of which corresponds to the properties of the austenitic Ni–Cr stainless steel. For this purpose, the phase composition and elemental distribution of alloying components in the coatings are assessed, the structural features are analyzed, and the physical, mechanical, and adhesion characteristics are determined. It is shown that coatings up to 2400 μm thick, the structure of which is a γ-solid solution of Ni and Fe, are formed on the steel surface. The ultimate strength of the formed material reaches 856 MPa, which is by a factor of 1.3 higher than that of the austenitic Ni–Cr stainless steel 12–Cr18–Ni9–Ti. The adhesive strength of the coatings reaches 560 MPa. The corrosion resistance of layers of different compositions surfaced on low-carbon steel under the influence of a 65% nitric acid is studied. It has been established that the corrosion resistance of surface-alloyed layers in the 65% nitric acid solution exceeds the resistance of the base material by 30–70 times.

Abstract:The phase transition of austenitic stainless steel of commercial label CL20ES and zinc ferrite nanoparticles was studied in an oxidative atmosphere of dry air to develop a low-cost, effective technique for covering-layer fabrication. CL20ES powder and zinc ferrite powder were mechanically mixed. This mixture was studied in an atmosphere of dry air at different annealing temperatures from room temperature to 900∘C. The employed characterization techniques are X-ray powder diffraction, Mössbauer spectroscopy in the transmission geometry, and scanning electron microscopy with elemental mapping. The fabricated layers were also characterized by surface-specific techniques such as conversion electron Mössbauer spectroscopy and grazing incidence X-ray powder diffraction. The analyzed powder mixture shows resistance against oxidation in dry air and high temperatures. These results were employed to produce zinc ferrite covering layers on 3D-printed cylinders of CL20ES. The results show a predisposition of zinc ferrite to be recrystallized at temperatures above 350∘C without the production of corrosive substances on steel. The zinc ferrite layers were analyzed by an ultrasonic hardness tester as well, which proved the hardness enhancement.

Abstract:Journal of Thermoplastic Composite Materials, Ahead of Print. Polyurethanes (PU) are widely used in corrosion protection, anti-biofouling coatings, and self-cleaning glass, yet their low hydrophobicity poses durability challenges. This study addresses this by enhancing PU coatings' hydrophobicity by refining surface roughness and forming tailored porous structures. Using drop, spin, dip, and spray coating techniques, hydrophobic PU coatings were fabricated on 304 steel plates. To further enhance hydrophobicity, 0.5 w/v% graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) were introduced into the coatings. Additionally, stainless-steel 500 mesh was incorporated to create patterned surfaces, increasing surface roughness and tailoring the porous structure. The analysis included optical and scanning electron microscopy, water contact angle (WCA) measurements, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, electrochemical corrosion tests, and atomic force microscopy. Incorporating GNP notably increased WCA by 20–23° and reduced corrosion rates in a 3.5% NaCl solution. Likewise, applying stainless-steel mesh improved surface roughness, raising WCA by 3-8° and decreasing corrosion rates. The study observed changes in porous structure, with pore size reduction correlating with increased roughness and decreased corrosion rates upon mesh application and GNP addition. This comprehensive examination highlights the potential of PU coatings for various applications and underlines the importance of tailored porous structures in enhancing their performance and versatility. Spin coating emerged as the optimal technique, yielding uniform, defect-free coatings with the highest WCA.

Abstract:The authors have studied the effect of alloying on the structure, microhardness and abrasive wear resistance of electroslag surfacing layers on low-alloy structural steel 09G2S. For modification, mixtures of Si3 N4 + FeSi2 + Si powders obtained in the Department of Structural Macrokinetics of the Tomsk Scientific Centre SB RAS by the method of SHS synthesis, as well as powder compositions based on TiC, were used. A molten electrode was made of low-alloy steel St3, on which modifying compositions Si3 N4 + FeSi2 + Si were poured out, in the first case, and modifying compositions Si3 N4 + FeSi2 + Si, located below, in the second case. Metallography and X-ray microanalysis methods were used to determine the structure and to analyze the composition of the deposited layers, heat-affected zone (HAZ) and the base metal, on the basis of which assumptions were made about the nature of the formation of coating properties – hardness and wear resistance. It is shown that the main influence on the wear resistance is exerted by structure of the surfacing metal. There is a positive effect of modifying coatings by alloying materials with the alloys Si3 N4 + FeSi2 + Si + St3 and TiC + St3. In the molten layer, many new crystallization centers are released in the form of dispersed TiC particles. Dispersed TiC particles with a high melting point (3180 °C) are the first to fall out of the melt and not only serve as multiple crystallization centers, but also prevent the growth of austenitic grains, which ensures the formation of dispersed structure. The coatings contain TiC carbide particles, as well as inclusions of other phases. At the same time, an increase in hardness of the deposited layer containing titanium carbide inclusions is observed in direction of the boundary with the base. Wear resistance of the layer increases when a TiC-based coating is formed. The obtained data can be used to create deposited layers on the metal surface with high resistance against abrasive wear.

Abstract:Three subtypes of inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor (IP3R1, IP3R2, and IP3R3) Ca2+ release channel share basic properties but differ in terms of regulation. To what extent they contribute to complex Ca2+ signaling, such as Ca2+ oscillations, remains largely unknown. Here we show that HeLa cells express comparable amounts of IP3R1 and IP3R3, but knockdown by RNA interference of each subtype results in dramatically distinct Ca2+ signaling patterns. Knockdown of IP3R1 significantly decreases total Ca2+ signals and terminates Ca2+ oscillations. Conversely, knockdown of IP3R3 leads to more robust and long lasting Ca2+ oscillations than in controls. Effects of IP3R3 knockdown are surprisingly similar in COS-7 cells that predominantly (>90% of total IP3R) express IP3R3, suggesting that IP3R3 functions as an anti-Ca2+-oscillatory unit without contributing to peak amplitude of Ca2+ signals, irrespective of its relative expression level. Therefore, differential expression of the IP3R subtype is critical for various forms of Ca2+ signaling, and, particularly, IP3R1 and IP3R3 have opposite roles in generating Ca2+ oscillations.
Surface Alloying of Internal Surfaces of Low‐Carbon Steel Castings through Incorporation of Nickel, Nickel and Chromium, and 316L Stainless Steel Powders to Mold and Core Surfaces

Abstract:A surface alloying technique was developed to enrich the internal surfaces of low-carbon steel casting with nickel or nickel and chromium. This unique technique involves the incorporation of nickel (Ni), nickel and chromium (Ni+Cr), or stainless steel (S.S.) powders into a slurry, and then applying the slurry onto the surface of cores used in sand molds which comes in contact with molten metal during casting. Various properties, including coating thickness, composition, microstructural phases, surface hardness, and corrosion resistance of the surface-alloyed layer were studied. The internal surface of the substrate metal was enriched with nickel and chromium, up to 16.32 wt.% Ni or 7.79 wt.% Ni and 15.85 wt.% Cr. Optical microscopy showed that the surface-enriched layer was continuous over the entire surface of the casting and ranged in thickness from 229 to 1342 μm. When alloyed with Ni and S.S. powders, the surface-alloyed layers demonstrated a dendritic solidification microstructure, suggesting complete dissolution of powders in steel followed by solidification. While the substrate primarily displayed pearlitic and ferritic structures, simulation and X-ray diffraction confirmed the presence of austenite and ferrite in the surface-alloyed layer when Ni+Cr was used. Abstract:Metals corrode easily which leads to environmental hazards, structural cracks and economic loss. To mitigate metals from corrosion, the organic coating was preferred since it aids as a barrier to separate oxygen, corrosive ions and water. However, some organic inhibitors are toxic in some extent. The significance of the research is to deepen the corrosion studies using natural biopolymer materials especially rich in nitrogenous matter. Zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, papaya leaves and DGEBA (diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A) were used in this study. The presence of alkaloid material and nitrogenous matter in the papaya leaf provides a beneficiary effect by accelerating the corrosion resistance in carbon steel. Mechanical properties/electrochemical behavior of carbon steel was studied by impedance and polarization test in an acidic environment. The microhardness of nano-hybrid composite was found to be 800 HV200 with surface wettability of 109.5° (hydrophobic). In addition, corrosion rate of composite coating was reduced by 79% and 22.5% from virgin and DGEBA coating medium, respectively. An acoustic emission (AE) test was also taken to monitor the characterization of these materials. The acoustic emission parameters are within the error margin of around 60% of the operating load. Microstructural analysis shows the morphological behavior of the coated substrate. Biopolymer shows a prominent anti-corrosive performance for carbon steel at 0.5 mol/L. The results are justified in comparison with nano-hybrid composite biopolymer coating (ZnO–TiO2–PLE) to the organic polymer coating (DGEBA).

Abstract:In the present study, sintered austenitic stainless steel type 316L was laser surface alloyed with Inconel 625 powder by the fibre optic laser. The Inconel 625 spheroidal powder of grain size 60-150 μm was introduced by the coaxial feeding head directly to the liquid metal, during laser surface alloying. The process parameters were selected to melt and fully dissolve alloying powder into the alloyed surface. As a result of laser alloying, the porosity of sintered stainless steel was eliminated, a uniform distribution of nickel and molybdenum in the entire alloyed zone was obtained. The alloyed surface shows fully austenitic microstructure of 17%Cr, 18%Ni, 3%Mo. The superficial hardness, microhardness and surface wear resistance were significantly improved in respect to an untreated substrate material. The presented technique of laser surface alloying can be easily applied for sintered austenitic stainless steel components where selected component surfaces require an improved surface performance.

Abstract:The studies assess the possibility of increasing the corrosion resistance, wear resistance of the surface of steel St3 using the method of plasma surface modification. The addition of OK 84.78 electrode coating powder in mixtures containing NiCrBSi leads to the increase of surface hardness. It is shown that the higher the content of OK 84.78 coating powder in the modifying mixture, the higher the probability of occurrence of defects in the fused surface layer (cracks, pores, heterogeneity). Studies of corrosion processes in a 3% NaCl solution show that coatings containing alloyed elements Cr, Ni have a higher passivation in a corrosive environment. NiCrBSi + 20% OK 84.78 coating is considered to be high corrosion-resistant.
Enhanced Tribological Properties of CrN Coatings on Densified Surfaces of Fe-Based Porous Materials Obtained Through Powder Metallurgy and Ultrasonic Shot Peening Treatment

Abstract:Powder metallurgy (PM) Fe (steel) products still suffer from abrasion and fatigue, thus reducing their life expectancy. The physical vapor deposition (PVD) technique can significantly enhance surface wear and fatigue resistance. On the other hand, ultrasonic shot peening (USSP) treatment is an emerging and effective technique that can enhance surface strength and improve surface density, particularly for PM products. Duplexed PM Fe (steel) samples are expected to have excellent mechanical properties and long service life. In this work, PM Fe (steel)-based samples (ρ = 6.9) were prepared as substrates for CrN coatings with and without USSP treatment. Holes sized about 35 μm can be observed on CrN coatings deposited on as-sintered substrates, while the CrN coatings on USSP-treated substrates were very compact. According to the results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-Ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), the crystal structures and chemical bonds of CrN coatings on different substrates are the same. Nevertheless, CrN coatings were found to be discontinued on sintered substrates because of holes in the surface. In friction tests, such specific structures created plenty of "steps" in the coating, increasing residual stress, which crushed the coatings into fragments and led to severe abrasive wear. Additionally, wear rates would increase with load. Nevertheless, USSP treatment can generate a compact layer, about 700 μm thick, to offer strong support to CrN coatings. Therefore, CrN coatings on the USSP-treated substrates exhibited lower and more stable coefficients of friction and wear rates. This generally describes a simple method to enhance the surface strength and densities of PM Fe (steel) products. Besides, it offers a new way of prolonging the service lives of PM Fe (steel) products by USSP and PVD duplex treatment.

Improved Process Efficiency in Laser-Based Powder Bed Fusion of Nanoparticle Coated Maraging Tool Steel Powder

Abstract:Research and development in the field of metal-based additive manufacturing are advancing steadily every year. In order to increase the efficiency of powder bed fusion of metals using a laser beam system (PBF LB/M), machine manufacturers have implemented extensive optimizations with regard to the laser systems and build volumes. However, the optimization of metallic powder materials using nanoparticle additives enables an additional improvement of the laser–material interaction. In this work, tool steel 1.2709 powder was coated with silicon carbide (SiC), few-layer graphene (FLG), and iron oxide black (IOB) on a nanometer scale. Subsequently, the feedstock material and the modified powder materials were analyzed concerning the reflectance of the laser radiation and processed by PBF-LB/M in a systematic and consistent procedure to evaluate the impact of the nano-additivation on the process efficiency and mechanical properties. As a result, an increased build rate is achieved, exhibiting a relative density of 99.9% for FLG/1.2709 due to a decreased reflectance of this modified powder material. Furthermore, FLG/1.2709 provides hardness values after precipitation hardening with only aging comparable to the original 1.2709 material and is higher than the SiC- and IOB-coated material. Additionally, the IOB coating tends to promote oxide-formation and lack-of-fusion defects.

Abstract:The possibility of using powder spraying to improve the strength properties of polymer concrete products has been studied. Different compositions of polymer concrete mixtures have been compared and analyzed in order to find out the adhesive and cohesive properties of coatings. An analysis of the stress-strain state under static loads has been carried out. To improve the tribological properties and wear resistance of critical parts of metal-cutting machine tools, such as beds, it is proposed to spray polymer concrete surfaces using the gas-thermal method. Two types of powder mixtures for spraying have been compared, and the adhesive properties of the analyzed coatings have been considered. The finite element method was used for the calculation of the abrasion resistance of polymer concrete models according to the proposed modification of Ni-7Cr-3Fe + 60% WC coating composition, which showed that the use of gas-thermal coating for polymer concrete is justified. Based on a simulation of adhesive peeling strength, it can be concluded that the wear coefficient of the coated sample is quite large. Under the impact of amplitude loads applied during 5 × 106 loading cycles with a high degree of wear equal to 1.5, the sample showed high safety margins equal to 0.67. The presence of a sprayed layer prevents the concentration of internal stresses in the area of polymer concrete, taking over the resulting stresses under an external force caused by the mechanical properties of the materials, thereby increasing the service life of a manufactured part.

Abstract:This research investigated the corrosion resistance of surface layers on low-carbon steel exposed to a chloride environment at room temperature. This study systematically evaluated the effects of varying pack compositions, coating temperatures, and application durations on the characteristics of the deposited coatings. The potentiodynamic polarization corrosion test was employed to assess the wet corrosion behavior of the specimens. Elemental compositions and microstructural features were analyzed using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) in conjunction with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), providing insights into phase distribution. The chromizing, titanizing, and chromotitanizing treatments were conducted at temperatures of 900 °C, 1000 °C, and 1100 °C, respectively, with varying coating times. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed a complex arrangement of elements and compounds within the coatings, including Cr, Ti, Cr1.9Ti, FeTi, Al2O3, Cr2O3, TiO2, Cr1.36Fe0.52, and (Ti0.86)3.58. The study found that as the deposition duration increased, the coating thickness increased, comprising a thin inner layer and a substantially thicker outer layer. This layered structure resulted from the outward diffusion of Fe atoms and the inward diffusion of Cr and Ti atoms. Electrochemical analysis in a 3.5% NaCl aqueous solution indicated a marked enhancement in the corrosion resistance of the coated specimens compared to their uncoated counterparts. The potentiodynamic polarization tests confirmed that the protective coatings significantly reduced the corrosion rate, with performance influenced by both the temperature and duration of the deposition process. These findings highlighted the potential of tailored coating techniques to improve the durability and performance of low-carbon steel in corrosive environments.

Abstract:The surfaces of 316L stainless steels, which are frequently used in the industry due to their mechanical properties, were coated with HVOF method in order to improve their properties. Two different powders for steel surfaces; Diamalloy 2002 (Tungsten Carbide, chromium based) and Metco 7202 (chromium based) powders were prepared in different concentrations. Group A specimens were coated with a mixture of 50% Diamalloy 2002 and 50% Sulzer Metco and Group B specimens were coated with a mixture of 100% Sulzer Metco 7202 by HVOF method. These powders produce coatings that provide wear resistance due to their content. The surface properties of the coated samples were analysed by some methods. Optical and SEM images of all samples were taken and XRD analyses were performed. The coating layer is clearly visible. Some porosity formation was observed. Microhardness values were measured. As a result of hardness measurements, it was determined that the surface hardness increased 4-7 times with the coating. Linear abrasion tests were performed with CSM abrasion tester. It was observed that the abrasion resistance increased. After the abrasion test, roughness measurements and SEM-EDS analyses of the abraded surfaces were performed. Abrasive and adhesive wear formations are present on the worn surfaces.
Corrosion Properties of S-Phase/Cr2N Composite Coatings Deposited on Austenitic Stainless Steel

Abstract:In order to study the suitability of the S-phase layers as the interlayer for Cr2N chromium nitride coatings, a number of composite coatings were deposited by the reactive magnetron sputtering (RMS) method on austenitic steel substrates with various initial surface conditions (as delivered and polished) and their corrosion resistance was assessed. Coatings with S-phase interlayer were deposited at three different nitrogen contents in the working atmosphere (15%, 30%, and 50%), which influenced the nitrogen concentration in the S-phase. Coatings with chromium, as a traditional interlayer to improve adhesion, and uncoated austenitic stainless steel were used as reference materials. Detailed microstructural and phase composition studies of the coatings were carried out by means of scanning electron microscopy (SEM), optical microscopy (LM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) and were discussed in the context of results of corrosion tests carried out with the use of the potentiodynamic polarization method conducted in a 3% aqueous solution of sodium chloride (NaCl). The performed tests showed that the electrochemical potential of the S-phase/Cr2N composite coatings is similar to that of Cr/Cr2N coatings. It was also observed that the increase in the nitrogen content in the S-phase interlayer causes an increase in the polarization resistance of the S-phase/Cr2N composite coating. Moreover, with a higher nitrogen content in the S-phase interlayer, the polarization resistance of the S-phase/Cr2N coating is higher than for the Cr/Cr2N reference coating. All the produced composite coatings showed better corrosion properties in relation to the uncoated austenitic stainless steel.

Abstract:This work reviews surface modification techniques for improving the wear and corrosion resistance of 42CrMo steel. The advantages and disadvantages of various methods, including thermal spraying, deposition, hardfacing, laser cladding, nitriding, and laser surface treatment, are discussed. The review elaborates on the materials commonly employed in laser cladding technology, including iron-based, cobalt-based, nickel-based, and high-entropy alloys and reinforced composite coatings. Furthermore, the mechanisms and methods of improving the wear and corrosion resistance of 42CrMo steel are summarized. Finally, this review presents research shortcomings and future opportunities of surface modification techniques. This review also provides a theoretical guide for the application of 42CrMo steel.

Abstract:The natural process of metal corrosion causes significant losses in a wide range of industries, requiring substantial efforts to contain its effects. An alternative approach to corrosion protection is the use of renewable organic coating materials. This research proposes the use of lignin-polyester blends as coating materials. Due to the abundance of functional groups in the lignin structure, it can act as corrosion inhibition centers in the coating. The coatings are deposited on stainless steel surfaces by a novel process route via atmospheric plasma powder spraying (APPS). To determine the effect of the lignin content on the corrosion performance, the specific amounts of lignin and polyester have been varied in 10 % increments from 0 % to 100 % with constant coating parameters. The as-produced coatings exhibited thicknesses that ranged from 11 μm to 30 μm, respectively for the pure lignin and polyester coatings. Additionally, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis demonstrated the meltability of the lignin and polyester powder through the plasma process. Coatings containing a greater proportion of polyester exhibited superior meltability and better coverage. Furthermore, it was observed that the APPS promoted cross-linking of the lignin particles, as determined by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). This, in conjunction with well-balanced lignin-polyester ratios, was instrumental in achieving advanced corrosion resistance as evidenced by Potentiodynamic polarization measurement (PDP). The lignin proportion between 40 % and 60 % produced the highest corrosion inhibition efficiency, with a maximum inhibition of 96 %. Furthermore, pull-off adhesion tests suggest that lignin contributes to the overall cohesive strength of the blend.

Abstract:The structure, microhardness, and tribological properties of coatings obtained in the process of surfacing of powder mixtures by an electron beam ejected into an air atmosphere are studied. For surfacing, we used a powder mixture containing amorphous boron and a wetting component, the role of which was played by Fe, Cr and Ni powder particles. The function of protecting the molten material from the air atmosphere was performed by MgF 2 flux. The thickness of the formed coatings reached 2.3–2.8 mm. The maximum level of microhardness of coatings reaches ~1500 HV. The main mechanism of hardening of such is due to the presence in the material of up to 90% (volume) particles of the hardening phase. It is shown that chromium borides Cr 2 B and (Fe,Cr) 2 B play the role of a hardening phase in the γ-phase (Ni, Fe solid solution). Chromium is contained in the alloying powder mixture and the base material. During the cladding process, chromium diffuses and forms borides. This process occurs due to the greater affinity of chromium for boron than nickel and iron. It has been established that chromium containing coatings have maximum wear resistance under various abrasive conditions. The wear resistance of coatings increased by 5 times compared to stainless steel 12Х18Н9T under friction with fixed abrasive particles. The wear resistance of hardened layers under conditions of gas and hydroabrasive action at low angles of attack (15°, 20°) increased by 6 and 2 times, respectively.
